Bedtime in Alaska – Open Thread. Brian!

3 10 2008

When I was a child, I used to love seagulls. My sister once introduced me to a very special seagull named Oscar.  Oscar was a very ordinary herring gull, but for some reason Oscar took a liking to me.  He would show up everywhere I went, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles just to see me.  He was my little squawking shadow. You might think that he would get lost in a crows of dozens of birds that looked virtually identical, but my sister always seemed to be able to spot him and would reassure me, “Of course that’s Oscar!”  She was older and wiser and I never questioned this.

In that spirit, I present today’s picture of Brian.  (It’s probably actually Brian’s younger brother, or cousin, but Brian is really more of a grand idea than any one particular animal, right?)   Anyway, the picture was shot out the window and isn’t very good, but Brian was in a hurry today, and didn’t stay to pose for pictures.

In other business:  Countdown to Truth! 6 Days Until the Release of the Branchflower Report!

We had a little surprise today with the Supreme Court deciding to hear the appeal on quashing the Legislature’s investigation into the Troopergate scandal.  I’m going to assume that our competent Supreme Court will come to the right decision on Wednesday when they hear arguments.  So we march on and urge the members of the Legislative Council to release the report.

***************************************************************************************

Top 10 Reasons to Release the Report (courtesy of Gryphen at The Immoral Minority)

Tonight #7: This investigation has cost Alaskans $100,000. The last time Alaskans spent that kind of money with nothing to show for it, was on exotic dancers and cocaine back in the oil drenched 1980s.

Beautiful words AKM. Wonderful picture.

Thank you so much for bringing his image back to us. He’s Alaska; he’s the state of our country and this election; he’s hope; he’s our future; Brian’s good, but no softy.

Re #7: Reminds me of Joe McGiness’ description of Juneau legislative sessions in *Going To Extremes* … whole weeks of evenings crammed with hookers, whiskey and cocaine, then go into the Capitol in the morning and make decisions involving millions of dollars and thousands of peoples’ livelihoods.

As Joe Perry from Aerosmith put it: “The expensive thing isn’t the drugs, even the phenomenal amounts we were doing. It’s the decisions you make – or don’t make – when you’re fucked up.”

Explains a lot, maybe!😉

Rule #7 sounds like a line straight out of Joe McGiness’ book *Going To Extremes* … as the Aerosmith guys would tell you, the expensive part isn’t the drugs, it’s the decisions you make (or don’t make) when you’re high.

A number for you to contemplate:

The chances of Sarah Palin having to take over the duties of the President in the event of John McCain dying in office or being incapacitated by illness for a period of time during his first term is 34%.

A scenario for you to contemplate:

Sarah and Todd Palin in charge of a Carrier Battle Group, A Marine Expeditionary Unit or a B-1 Lancer wing.

This is the most important, the most scary election I can think of.

If S.A.C ever did their Human reliability evaluation test on these two they’d be escorted off the premises.

Eyes firmly on the ball guys. For everybody’s sake.

Conservative America’s Spooky Li’l Love Affair with Governor Palin

{ one of the posters over at ePluribus Media popped the following up on the board }

Discussions I’ve happened across here and there have made mention of Sarah Palin’s well-rehearsed and polished “folksy” / “cutesy” remarks and body language; one person even said that the “wink wink” was enough to make her sick.

My response?

<blockquote”Wink, wink…” heh…reminds me of a song about a little eye that went a winkin’…

YouTube Video

Halloween is coming fast, and the McCain Campaign is working overtime to give us hauntingly familiar strains of the same tired old tune, while GOP’s steadfast wing of the radical punditry is striving hard to convince us that Conservative America’s “Spooky Little Love Affair with Palin” is right on track, scarin’ the rest of America out of our collective shorts.

Enjoy the Vid!!

Here is the most fearful prospect with Palin being a heartbeat away from the presidency. Our Constitution is very clear about the VP position.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/27015911#27015911

Palin is a complete nut job. She not only decided to not answer a single question in the debate, but the ones she did answer, she decided to spew out what her little fucking brain decided the people wanted to hear.

I can not even count the number of times that I wanted to get up there and slap that fake-Christian for lying.

The only way to defeat this insanity, is to have a 100% voter turnout of Democrats.

AKM……..how wonderful Brian has picked your yard to visit….congratulate your Mamma for teaching you to share! BTW…..I always suspect the seagulls are laughing at us all. You get pooped on pretty good here in Texas if you feed them!

A little story….we are honored to have a female squirrel building a nest in our willow tree and she owns the whole yard and the bird feedeers. She is always pregnant or nursing and has become very friendly. Hurricane Ike ruined her home and one of her two babies broke his back either when the nest was blown down with the limb or by other falling debris that nite. He looked like a drowned rat that morning we spotted him but momma squirrel looked after him and he dragged himself to an area of ground debris cover.
Sadly I saw her take him away one morning….she was encouraging him to follow her, he swinging himself forward on his two front legs. Fortunately there is plenty of habitat for critters…..and female squirrel who we call “mommy” will be pregnant again. Mother Nature is a marvel and we are so honored when we can contribute, appreciate and conserve her code.

Just found this on MSNBC. We had a grand time playing debate bingo at my house–even my 8year old watched almost all of the debate.

Sylvie Ofstie, right, high five’s Sarah Studer after Studer scored a “Palin Bingo” at a debate watch party at a tavern in Seattle Thursday, Oct. 2. I turns out that Rich Lowry of the National Review was masturbating while Palin was (so-called) debating Sen. Joe Bidan Thursday night. Rich was Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Person” Friday night.

You can comment to Rich Lowry at: comments.lowry@nationalreview.com and ask him why he must masturbate while Palin is regurgitating Republican lies. What made him to it? Was it the lipstick on a pig? Or perhaps lying gets Republican neo-cons rubbery in the groan.

My email to Rich said: “Rich, Masturbating is a private and lonely affair, but do you have go public with your fantasies about Palin? Eeeeeeewwww…For God sakes, keep it in your pants.

Observation: I was beginning to wonder if it were just me thinking that yes, Palin is cutesy, but in a seductive way. To me, it really came across during the debate. Listening to our local radio WAMC, they had on several women who felt the same way I did. I found that reassuring, in a weird sort of way.

I wonder if that accounts for the feedback from the undecided voters where Palin did much worse among women?

Sarah Palin to “Charlee” Gibson, “You can’t blink. you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on – reform of this country and victory in the war you can’t blink.”
Blinking = Bad
Winking = Good ?

From the way she was blinking during the debate, it looks like a wire must have come loose. On the other hand her wink looks like a cheap come on. Maybe that tells us about the the type of woman Lowry likes. Instead of “a book of verse, a jug of wine and thou” – “let’s grab a six pack and go to my place.”

Palin’s interview on Fox about how she and Todd would love to get into Michigan and talk to all those factory workers- it hints of trying to make sure she is not blamed for McCain losing the election. Palin throwing McCain under the bus?
And WOW, all the power she’d love the VP to have, just like Cheney, only more. But maybe VP isn’t enough, goodness, is she going to run for Pres. in 2012?
Or is she just hoping to hang on to Alaska? Lots of ways to add to your family’s income as Alaska head of state, you betcha.

Sigh, what’s an ambitious ex-beauty contestant to do? Maybe head of the World Bank? Ambassador to France? CEO of Alaska Wild Foods? Commander in Chief of the Wasilla End Days Army? Next governor of Michigan?

Palin said nothing a person with average IQ and 5 weeks and a cadre of professional study assistance could not muster. She is perfectly comfortable parading around in front of crowds in a swimsuit, so bashful she ain’t.

The drill is to memorize (again, over a 5 week period) a few set pieces and add a couple of tricks and snarky jokes. Plan for expected questions, ignore the rest. Learn to GWB your speechifying with some doggone-golly-by-goshes and channel your inner cocktail waitress.

Voila! You don’t need an earpiece for that.

She is no smarter or more prepared for one of the most critical leadership roles in the world than when we saw her with Couric. With a few more months of work, and her new set of celebrity buddies, she could possibly be ready for a sitcom appearance.

She is still a far cry from the type of leader that is needed in serious and troubled times.

Your pictures of Brian are really nice. I visited Alaska for the first time this summer, and saw several of these majestic creatures while there. I’m not a hunter, I’ve done some trout fishing here in Colorado where I live, and I used to go fishing with my Grandparents in Kansas when I was a kid back in the sixties. So I’ve never understood the attraction of shooting Moose, and other large game for sport. I can understand it if you shoot game for food. But most of the hunters I know, spend thousands of dollars in equipment, and licenses, and then may or may not come back with an animal. If they do come back with one, I figured they spent enough money to buy caviar for dinner every night for a year. While I was in Alaska I ‘shot’ moose with my digital camera, and I have the images downloaded on my computer. I like that arrangement.

I guess my feelings about Sarah Palin are the following. I really dislike her views on Global warming, shooting animals from aircraft, the environment in general. I agree with her that we should not allow another Halocaust in the Middle East. But I would extend that to mean for both the Jews and Arabs that live in what is regarded as the Holy Land. She scares me in her statements of going to war with Russia, Iran, and other countries. We already have two wars being fought, and my heart breaks for the soldiers, who have gone off to serve their country for patriotism, and come back either in a body bag, or wounded. And then not receiving the help from our government that they and their families need. We really don’t need to continue this insanity. Let’s give peace a chance. Let’s give diplomacy a chance. This country is facing some serious problems, and we need a pragmatic, level headed, bi-partisan approach to get a handle on them. I don’t see John McCain or Sarah Palin capable of pulling this off. I’m not sure Obama and Biden can pull it off either, but I see them as being the lesser of two evils in this election. Senator Biden struck me as a man in the debate, as one who can agree to disagree, and yet forge relationships with people who disagree with him. I was impressed with his story of being a single parent. I went on wikipedia to read more about his history, and how that came to be with him. When he spoke of genocide in Darfur, and the despair of that side of the world, I wittnessed his humanity. I didn’t see that in Sarah Palin though. She responded right after that with her talking points, and glibness.

Good morning muflattians. I awoke this morning and performed my usual routine. Got my cup of tea…and turned on the tv to MSNBC..and I will undoubtedly change to CNN throughout the day.

As soon as the tv came on….I heard the announcer say, that a McCain spokesman…unidentified of course…says that they dont want to talk about the economy so the next 4 weeks will be a ramped up personal attack on Obama.

I dont mean to sound stupid….and I am not…really. I just dont understand how they can say something like this and it is just accepted.

Why do people from both parties, not get insulted by this behaviour? I could hardly believe what I was hearing. They dont even try to play it down…they just out and out tell us that they are now going to change up the strategy to dirty tricks. Shameful….John McCain is no hero….he needs to go back to Arizona and live out whatever life he has left. Creep.

Some of the comments after, were from men who were so angry with Palin. They likened her to the kind of woman you may be able to pick up in a bar. Palin uses her winking and cutsiness to get her way. She knows exactly what she is doing. This will NOT win her womens votes. Women know her for exactly what she is….and educated men do as well. HOUSE/SENATE WATCH LIST

Assignment

To vet all candidates applying for work, remember, (ideology & agenda=American policies we, the people, have to live by). We hand-pick those, we, feel suitable for office, regardless of political party affiliation. Remember they work for us. We, the people, should decide on all candidates before letting them represent us, in government.

Main Job Requirement

How to interview perspective applicants… If, they have done nothing to improve your quality of life and community as a whole, vote someone new into office and have your community make sure he or she stays on track, and, are of good character. Give them only one term to, misrepresent the people.

FORMULA to remember

Ideology & Agenda=American policies we have to live by.

Applicants INTERVIEWING for Government Work…

Christine Jennings (FL) Democratic 13th District Catherine Harris’s (instrumental in the 2004 election decision) seat, someone look at her closely to see what’s up. There are some interesting things floating around about her.

Applicants who are OK FOR NOW the watch list…Continue the vetting, these government workers voted No on the Bailout Oct.3, 2008

House List

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), a leading critic of the bailout plan. “The fact is, we have taken two weeks, and we can take another week.” “Defeating this bill today is not the last step. It is the first step to passing a good bill.”

Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) was more direct, saying, “The market may go up for the next few days, but Democracy is going down here.”

Ohio Rep. Steven C. LaTourette, who was thought to be reconsidering his vote against the bailout package on Monday, tore into the revised package Friday morning because of a series of tax extensions added by the Senate.

The Ohio Republican offered an amendment Thursday night that would have reduced the cost of the rescue package to $250 billion, but members of the Rules Committee blocked it to ease passage.

“This was a bad bill we voted on Monday,” LaTourette said on the House floor. “It got a lot worse.”

Rep. Hilda L. Solis (D-Calif.), acknowledged Friday in the chamber that she was reconsidering her “no” vote.

Congress members are in INSUBORDINATION for not listening to the will of, we, the people…Heavily vet anybody running for re-election and, if, necessary, upset, them from being re-elected, if their record does not redeem the bad bailout vote. In communities across America, choose candidates in co ordinance with your community’s needs, and our nations.

For those of you who are skeptical and don’t think we, the people, can have power over our living conditions and quality of life; the current polls say, you are wrong. Some of us understand; to make great gain you have to, first, make great sacrifice.

Whoever we, the people, vote in, as President will still have to work in conjunction, effectively, with both houses of congress; a little work from us now, will prevent hold-ups and hold-outs, from grid locking government, and, from preventing our new President from making improvements to our quality of life. Based on what we see now, can we really afford to leave the House and Senate congressmen and women, the one’s we currently have, to realistically, work to get things done alongside our new President? We must get rid of “old guard” to get rid of gridlock in Congress. Anybody, over 10 years, unless, they have an outstanding record, must go. Just by default we should vote out anybody over 10 years because Congress gets into bitter power struggles vying for power ranking in congress against other members, and, the people’s work does not get done. Allowing congress members to gain seniority is the problem.

It has been a brutal last 8 years for us, the people. Government was suppose to be working for us, but, for quite sometime, have been ignoring us and moving forward with their own agendas. It is about time we speak, stand up for ourselves and let them know we are not going to take it. How…by voting them out on Election Day, we can, therefore, say for your insubordination—you are fired.

Keep this circulating, saturate the map.

Re: Palin running in 2012. I do not think that will come to pass. She has too much to defend and deaI with regarding her behaviour in Alaska. By the time Alaska is done with her…she will be shaking in her boots. Oh I have no doubt she will be elevated somehow within the Republican party….but I honestly believe she is so ridiculous that she will go the way of that silly smiling woman who is always on the talking heads. Good posts here. Thanks ‘buybooks’ for a very thoughtful and intelligent post about your views.

I agree with you about everything but I guess I have a little bit more faith in Barack Obama. I could be wrong of course, but I do think this man will make a difference in this country if elected – a good difference. Of course I know he will inherit a class-one mess with a wrecked ecnomy and a costly useless war we need to extricate ourselves from. But I really believe his two biggests strengths are his ability to motivate and his ability to manage. I’m excited about the potential of having a President with those qualities.

The Republicans are completely delusional. I just read that McCain’s ‘new’ strategy in the next few weeks will be to stop talking about the issues completely (aka the economy) and instead concentrate on Obama attacks.

So put on your body armour folks because the bird poop is going to flying.

But seriously… Regarding Sarah Palin and her winking and her calculated ‘come-hither’ tactic, I’m just bewildered. Those winks may solidify an already delusional, desperate and most likely delusioned base.

Those attack ads may give one or two more racist voters the out they need to vote for someone based on the color of his skin. But I really believe that any serious voter who hasn’t made up his or her mind yet is going to be looking for substance and answers and concrete solutions over sleeze, slime and lies and the cheap thrill one may get from being flirted with by a middle-agd mother of five.

(And personally for me I think Joe Biden is a whole lot cuter than Sarah Palin.)

Honestly, I don’t think there is much to worry about even if McCain turns his campaign dirty; voters will see that and turn away, especially if Obama does NOT rise to the bait and keeps the focus on the issues.

As for Palin, more and more I think she is nothing but a tramp who is selling her body to the RNC. She has to sell her body as there is no brain to sell.

The Republicans are falling all over themselves declaring SP the hands-down winner of her debate, and how she trounced Joe Biden, and even McCain himself on stage somewhere yesterday saying ‘How about that Barracuda” !!!

All this hype, and you would think they would follow up on all this success – right ?

Use the VP debate as a stepping stone for SP to get her message out, and prove she is capable of becoming the next VP of the United States – right ?

So I guess we can expect to see SP on ALL the news shows now – right ?

Shows like Meet The Press, and other Sunday morning talk shows – right ?

Seeing she did so well against Biden, the Republicans should have her everywhere, a complete media saturation – right ?

Come back to the real world, people !

The Republicans have announced that SP is back in the Republican Witness Protection Program.

She WILL NOT be doing any of the Sunday morning political shows.

She WILL NOT appear on Larry King, or Countdown, or Rachel Maddow, or Hardball or even on any Fox programs.

She WILL NOT be doing any more interviews.

She WILL ONLY be seen in public at the side of John McCain at campaign stops and WILL NOT take ANY questions from media, or voters, or anyone.

Way to play up her “success” at the VP debate Karl !

Every time I talk to a person leaning Republican they stall, run away, avoid a conversation, or are just silent. Or like Bill Riley — they rant irrationally. Like Bill Clinton says… voting is a complex thing. People vote for all sorts of reasons. It’s not the people that agree with us that we need to reach; it is the ones who don’t agree with us. But, they won’t talk. Are they so afraid of us, that they have to sneak around and conspire behind our backs? Why not have a rational upfront conversation? It is almost like they know we are right, but have no intention of changing, so by clamming up, they retain some kind of power. Perhaps your sister plans on not voting at all, or perhaps she plans to vote independent – or maybe she’s just still feeling hurt and angry (because let’s face it, Bill and Hillary are still the Dream Team for millions of people). 1. Ask ‘are you doing better now economically than before? Are you concerned

3. Ask if they were drowning and the only one available to help was a black man, would they accept the help?

Well, I think how you handle it has a lot to do with how it is expressed. Overt racism I always confront. But what we are experiencing in this election is covert racism, the racism that does not call names or identify itself. So, I see people looking for other reasons and sound bites not to vote for Obama ( like, he’s elitist).

But how I forgive this quieter racism is that I recognize it as ignorant and find it sad. We all have flaws, and this sadly may be your sister’s. I have a dear elderly friend who has voted democratic since Roosevelt. During the primary she was a Hillary supporter. When Obama took the nomination she told me “I know it sounds just awful, but I don’t think I can vote for a black man.”

I spoke gently to her about race in America and about what I had learned from reading Obama’s first book about his life experience and view. I reminded her that I am also mixed race as are many people who appear white culturally and are also light in color. I listened respectfully to everything she had to say and never told her she was wrong, just replied with my experience and belief.

The last time I saw her she was still struggling, but Obama was back on her possibilities list. We spoke of basic Democratic party values. And she told me she was afraid that McCain was slipping into early dementia.

Off on another somewhat unrelated rant:

As I’m sitting in my 54-degree house, waiting for Monday when I can finally go and buy the stovepipe parts needed to put my wood furnace into working shape, hoping that there won’t be a cold snap beyond the 27 degrees we had previously here before I can start heating, reading about winky Sarahrahrah and her “I’m just like you” Joe Sixpack blather should be enough to heat me up with anger. It doesn’t work that way though.

With Palin’s definition-by-financial-status of “Joe Sixpack” these days in this country, as what does she qualify all those middle-class people who are currently losing their homes? Trailer trash? How about all those “dear, dear old people” she so heart-warmingly mentioned when asked about the retirees in the country, the middle-class ones who’ve been losing their retirement funds and homes and whatever else they worked hard for all their lives? Obviously, “Joe Sixpack” according to Palin is a good bit above what’s commonly defined as “middle class”, financially speaking.

This woman crows that she’s “just like us”? Man, that’s about as offensive as it gets. Even if you ignore the financial discrepancy, there’s that wealth of dishonesty in every facet of her being – right up to outright, proven, documented lies -, her insane megalomania, her substandard level of knowledge, her atrocious self-representation, lack of human compassion, sickening flirtiness… it offends me (personally, as well as for my fellow people) that she has the nerve to insist that she’s the same as the normal, decent folk out there.

Chicago Sun Times has a transcript of Fox interview in which SP came up with 3 papers she reads and cites Supreme Court cases with which she disagrees. Read full text here:
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/10/sarah_palin_reads_the_new_york.html

NY Times, WSJ and The Economist. Let’s see…one considered liberal so she can keep up on the nasty liberal reporting, one traditionally considered conservative, and one dealing with economy. What a perfect balance. Wonder which strategist came up with those?

Kennedy v. Louisiana. “..where the Supreme Court will tell a state that they can’t impose the death penalty, even on heinous (ph) crime of repeat child rapists. That a state, it’s (sic) rights are taken away by the Supreme Court and we would not be able to decide for ourselves whether the death penalty in a case like that should be implemented or not.”

The Exxon case and one dealing with eminent domain.

My sense from the article is that she thought Katie was insulting her by asking what papers she reads. ” So, my response to her. I guess it was kind of filtered. But, I was sort of taken aback, like, the suggestion was, you’re way up there in a far away place in Alaska. You know, that there are publications in the rest of the world that are read by many. And I was taken aback by that because I don’t know, the suggestion that this was a little bit of perhaps we’re not in tune with the rest of the world.”

No, Paranoid Patty, that’s how you heard it. However, your answer was a self-fulfilling prophecy. By not naming any papers, it appeared uninformed. If you read those papers regularly, it’s an easy answer.

“I have a journalism degree, so I know how you guys work, also.” Then that’s to your advantage, isn’t it? If you know how they work, you can work them. But you didn’t and you looked like a fool. More accurately, you looked like you…a fool.

My disdain for this woman is boundless. I find her to be an insult to anyone who is intelligent and ambitious, both of which I admire. She is cunning and manipulative in a terribly overt way. That her manipulation includes the folksy foolishness is a huge blow to people, especially women, who don’t need to play a part. We can be intelligent and ambitious without reverting to antiquated, anachronistic female stereotypes (wink) to assure people who fear women with power that we haven’t lost what makes us women.

TheraP…who posts here quite often….wrote a post somewhere..(TP’M Muckraker I think) where she calls Palin a vamp. The post was excellent.

She plays to the lowest common denominator…..and I am not so sure they go out in droves to vote.
———————————————

I agree. I honestly don’t see this attraction to Palin thing. As a male I am not attracted to her at all. Zero. Nada. Zippo. I don’t find her physical looks anything that great. But far beyond that, what is attractive to me in a woman is vehicle intelligence. She does NOT have it. The most interesting people in life are people whether male or female who know how to use their vehicle to communicate. All great professional actors and actresses have this. Palin does not have this. She cannot act at any level of intelligence. She really cannot use her vehicle to take anyone on a journey to Shangra La. People who can do this use their sexuality and animal magnetism at a level of something like subtle comedy where they recognize that if you are intelligent you are in on the joke too. We are all just souls in bodies! Some in male bodies! Some in female bodies! People that have “vehicle intelligence” are much more fun to be around in the flow of life! Life is an adventure of exploring maleness and femaleness beyond ever greater and greater frontiers of intelligence. Palin is just a beginner. She is at the level of a sophomore year high school play. She has no chops. She has no vehicle intelligence.

I’ve known women in my life that could have cleverly set the ENTIRE United States of America up with three weeks of skillfully crafted comedy sty lings of horrific “Couric moments”, and then showed up at the national debate in front of a 100 million people as a completely different person and nailed every question with breathtaking knowledge and intelligence! What a hoot that would have been! Pure cleverness! Now THAT is being a vamp! Anything short of that is complete chart dropping amateur hour.

Come to think of it, a good example of what I am talking about is our beloved AKM here! I have never met this woman in person. I have no idea what she looks like. But she has charmed me senseless! She is using her vehicle. She oozes pure, raw, intelligence. I am sure she is a hoot in person. And choosing to remain anonymous in all this so far is absolutely brilliant! By her playing the masked Zorroess card I find myself even more charmed. As I have said in several posts here, I met Kurt Vonnegut face to face back in 1983 in NYC. He had exactly what I am talking about. He had “vehicle intelligence”. They wonderful man was having fun in his “Kurt Vonnegut” vehicle. He was having a very subtle laugh riot in this amazing veil of tears on this hapless planet of morons. A very warm and loving person he was. Meeting him and his wife was absolutely wonderful. I draw strength from it every day of my life.

Palin has no understanding of any of this. She is an amateur of her soul vehicle. If Republican men down at the Country Club are charmed by her, then I think these men have some serious issues about women. I guess she is the ultimate Stepford Talking Point Bot and that pushes their buttons. For these guys political ideology and libido are apparently now somehow strangely intertwined. Sam Kennison always said that one of the great engineering problems of life is for everyone to have to keep coming up with ever new and better reasons to keep f****** each other. This is for some people a major strategic engineering effort in marriage indeed! So maybe these Republican guys have come up with a new solution for their tormented psyches? Maybe this works better than what Eliot Spitzer came up with for himself in his own head? And I guess it is a whole lot cheaper. Scara is the new NeoCon libido solution. Rush Limbaugh, Shaun Hannity, and William Kristol are all completely gaga over her. I guess it is whatever floats your boat. I guess it works for The Todd too since they have four, uh, five kids.

But it doesn’t work for me.

Thank you Mudflats for being here for us. I’m a lonely blue dot in a VERY red state (Alabama) and Mudflats has been my lifeline since Palin was nominated. I check in with Mudflats several times a day. Just to paint a picture of how red my area is. When voting in the primary, we ask for a democratic or republican ballot and then sign on a numbered list (one for dems the other for rep) My husband got there right as the polls opened and was the first democrat to vote. My son voted at 9:00 am and was the 13th person to ask for a democratic ballot. I voted at 10:30 am and was the 17th person to vote in the democratic primary. When I voted at 10:30 there were over 400 republicans who had voted in the republican primary-so we’re a bit outnumbered around here. This is an area where people still ride around in cars proudly displaying W stickers. Interetstingly, there is only one McCain/Palin sign in my neighborhood (just across the street from a foreclosed house). My next door neighbor who has voted republican all his life is voting for Obama-He was appalled when McCain picked Palin and lost all respect for McCain at that point. Here in Alabama he sees his vote as a protest vote but I can only hope that in the battleground states there are other republicans who feel the same way and will vote for Obama. Again, thanks for all your work on the blog-we love Mudflats.

Good Morning all!

I have been reading your posts with great interest this morning.

Racist or not Rascist?

I too have run into older family members who will say they can’t stand John McCain but will not vote Obama. Hmmmm I try to pin them down as to why and many times I get the lies that have been debunked from here to xmas. Education seems to have no play in this vote issue. Some are very educated some just high school.

I have broke them into two groups in my family.

We have the women who were ardent Hilary supporters and are still mad. Yes as a woman I do call them the vagina voters. They will vote against their best interests to see a woman in office just because she is woman and they want to see that in their lifetime. When pressed that she is against everything they stand for they just shut up. If pressed some more they can barely say Obama’s name. Reverse sexism and Racism?

Then I have family members who state they just won’t vote period. They don’t like the McCain campaign and look disgusted by the Palin VP pick but they just can’t vote Obama even with Joe Biden as a running mate. Racisim?

This election in my estimation has brought out underlying racisim and sexism. They will not come out and admit it even to themselves.

At first I would just go crazy when they would give me their nonsense answers. I soon realized that this just made them mad and more stubborn.

Then one day it dawned on me I have a secret weapon. You may think I am stupid but truly it is because I have learned not to see skin color, as I have two grandsons who are black. Their father is black. When this finally dawned on me I made a promise to myself to stop the madness and politely step up when I thought race was the real issue.

I let the family members rant and rave and repeat their non answers and then casually say “I am sorry but I disagree with you”, and let them know that it is this very attitude that will determine how and what my grandsons will be able to achieve in the future and will they be the ones to help hold them back because of their skin color? I then walk away.

What I have found is that shuts people up very quickly and you see the light bulb go on.

Sometimes you have to fight back and finding an inarguable issue works the best.

Will they change their minds? Doubtful, but at least I stood up and pointed out that my grandsons are not abstract entities and are also their flesh and blood relatives too. I feel better and sometimes that is the only thing that counts.

Sorry for the long post.

Diva,

Thanks for those excellent reminders. The 3 people I would love to convince come from 3 general categories:

1. My friend and neighbor who goes to a mainstream but very right-leaning megachurch. Would never admit it but I suspect deep down she could never vote for a black man. Her daughter and mine (I’m so proud of her) have had a few discussions. Basically, you can’t have a discussion b/c all discussion boils down to “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.” I haven’t tried to engage the mom. Her tendency is to put the great wall of china around her so she doesn’t have to engage in any thoughtful discussion.

2. My husband’s cousin, who is kind of an old school, single codger. He thinks Palin is “kinda cute” and that’s enough for him. He really doesn’t want to think too deeply. He’s retired, but was a bartender at a swank, uppercrust country club and his whole life is about the money people he knows in town. He loves rubbing elbows w/the money crowd even tho he’s doing it while being their servant. The rest of the world could go up in a mushroom cloud and he’d be fine as long as he’s in the right bunker (he won’t be, he doesn’t get that even tho they treat him graciously and respectfully to his face, he is still just the hired help). Again, can’t engage him b/c he doesn’t want to think that deeply.

3. My cousin who is a died in the wool repub–I posted about her in another thread. We have been in a sometimes heated email exchange. She is also well-educated. She teaches remedial English so I don’t know how she can ignore the way Palin butchers the English language. Her deal is she buys into the fearmongering tactics of the right–gets the nasty viral emails, subscribes to conservative newsletters, and truly fears that Obama will lead us to some sort of socialist disaster. I think she equates socialism w/fascism, deep down. To her credit, she backed off a little when I sent her the snopes.com reply to one of her nasty viral emails. I finally had to stop emailing her for the sake of family ties.

Sorry for the rant. It’s a good reminder to keep it on the issues and try to keep emotion out of it. The most frustrating part for me is that for the first two types, you can’t even engage them in any discussion b/c they don’t want to admit to themselves or to you how fricking shallow they are.

I’m done. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam! I love this place. You are all amazing!

Excellent interview w/Michael Dukakis last night (Countdown, maybe?). Basically, he said it would be a huge mistake not to respond–says that’s what did him in and what did in Gore and Kerry. He said Clinton was on it like white on rice and that’s why he succeeded where others did not. So, whatever Bill is or isn’t doing on Obama’s behalf, I pray that he’s there for that kind of strategy. He said Bill had a group of people dedicated to that mission only. With the amazing ground team Obama has, I imagine he will follow suit.

Before being fired, perhaps he should upgrade his English-grammar skills? Shouldn’t it be, “come and help a n***?

I find it surprising that Mr. Howard dared to write out his interpretation of the CHANGE acronym. The 2006 census records for Jackson County, FL, show that the percentage of blacks is quite high (26.9%, compared to Florida’s statewide 15.8% http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/12/12063.html ), and I’m sure that he’d have had at least a few Afro-Americans in his class.

Children in the seventh grade are entering young adulthood (12, 13 and 14 years old), and you’d imagine that some large someone whose ox had been gored would have reminded Mr. Howard quite forcefully that this is America in 2008, not 1958.

I feel quite confident that some pupil enrolled within the Jackson County Adult Education Program, where he’s now teaching, will show him the error of his ways (perhaps by tattooing his sorry ass with “BOIAMMBMTI…Barack Obama is a much, much better man than I).

Don’t know if anyone saw the video of McBush here in KC(Independence) at the Truman Library where he had 2 tics of his left eye and then could not find his way of the stage. The two tics were close together time-wise, but fairly pronounced. I am not a doctor, but do have emergency medical training and they looked VERY neurological to me. Especially when you couple them with the fact that he could not get off the stage. Now you might say that lots of people get lost on stages, but this stage only has one entrance/ exit and is maybe 10 feet long and he continues to go through a WALL at the back of the stage. I am not kidding about there only being a wall at the back. I have been in that auditorium and it is tiny. The video was taken by someone who had tickets to be at that event by the way because that was the only way to get to go to that event.

HOLD IT! McCain is running an ad calling the bailout Obama’s plan. McCain voted for it. Is the man a total idiot? Is this another case of being for it before he was against it?

What strategist told him this would be a good ad. He *just* voted for it. It’s on the record. But he’s running an ad against it???

AND, since when is it Obama’s plan?

Now a Republican strategist is faulting Obama for consulting with colleagues on the plan. You gotta’ hate a candidate/leader who consults with others. No, much better to go with a candidate whose ego is so big that he doesn’t need to consult with anyone on the largest economic issue facing our nation in generations.

The Joe Biden Show

CHARLES M. BLOW

…”Biden’s job in many ways was to reintroduce himself to Americans. Palin had stolen the spotlight, and he was campaigning in the shadows. The media was ignoring him. Voters didn’t know him. In a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 32 percent of Democrats, 38 percent of independents and 41 percent of Republicans said they didn’t know or had no answer when asked to say what they most liked about Biden.

That night he reintroduced himself with panache and probably further strengthened an already strengthening Democratic ticket.

Good Morning (well, here anyway — since Mudflats now extends around the world, it’s hard to pick the right greeting):

I imagine that many of us have relatives or friends who are “having trouble voting for Obama”. I’ve been happy to see a great deal of progress in racialist attitudes during my lifetime, but there is still a long way to go. One reason I know this is that, at sixty, there are still times when I have to engage my reasoning facilities to overcome internal racism that still pops up from the lower levels of my mind. I know very well that I cannot claim to be free of racism — the best I can say is that I don’t behave like a racist.

Parenthetically, this is why I supported Senator Clinton in the primary. It’s not that I thought she would necessarily become a better President than Senator Obama, but that I knew she would be immune to the suppressed racism that I believe still exists in many voters. I voted for Tom Bradley for Governor of California, and I have never forgotten the sad lesson of that election. I hope old-school Obama supporters can forgive me for having made a strategic voting decision.

My own immediate problem is my in-laws. To start with, they are traditionally Republicans, and — while not seriously rich — are well-enough off that they haven’t been affected adversely by the Bush years. They’re not stupid, however, and understand things like “Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11” and “the national debt has doubled under Bush” and “the US health care system is a mess” and even “John McCain isn’t very smart and has a terrible temper”.

Ultimately, however, I’m pretty sure that they (at least my generation) will vote against Obama. The good news is, we’re all in California, so it probably won’t matter. But my sympathies go out to all other mudpuppies who have to contend with “stealth racism” in their own relationships.

GOP is floundering. They are in meltdown. They have no cohesive message. Sorry, but fear is not a message. Truly, it’s not.

Negative ads are based on fear. Even McCain’s internal polling shows that people want change: look how the GOP tried to co-opt it from Obama as a campaign slogan! Look how McPalin tries to sell “the team of mavericks” as agents of change.

But everyone knows that McCain is an old dog at the Senate, not an agent of change, and Palin–who answered like she was at a spelling bee on Thursday night (Thanks, Chris Matthews!) can’t even spell change.

Yes — and more specifically it is almost its own petrostate like Saudi Arabia, Iraq under Saddam, and Venezuela. The ability to control the oil in those countries gave rise to distinctive forms of authoritarianism. Good afternoon Mudflats Nation!

Shout out to everyone who makes this the best blog I have ever read. All those (yellow) boots on the ground give me perspectives on the good fight we are engaged in in every state. Even that tiny blue spot in WVa. – Good for You.

My take on the Bradley Effect is this: I too voted for Tom Bradley when he ran for Governor. There were two things that buried his campaign: he came out strong for gun control (or was it the death penalty?) just days before the election (I don’t remember the occasion, but he took that position. Maybe Speck Backfire Palin remembers). And secondly, and the subject of much of this thread, folks just could not bring themselves to vote for an African American. The first had as much to do with his losing. And it fueled justification for anyone who harbored racist fears to vote for Duekmejian.

While the racist stuff still operates, it will not un-elect Obama. He said — when asked about this issue — that sure there were folks who would not vote for him because he is Black – half-Black – but there were also folks who were voting for him for that very reason. Obama saw it as a wash.

I think he is right this time around.

Thinking of AKM, SMR, Suchanut and our partners in Alaska. You rock!

My little red state (Kansas) seems to have more Obama signs that McCain signs. My culdesac has two Obama and one McCain. Of course, that is only because I put an Obama one out after the neighbor put a McCain one out and dirtied up the neighborhood.🙂 It doesn’t help that the McCain campaign delivers them to the yards for free. Hmmm. (But maybe that’s why he is out of money…)

I have always been a voter, but only this election and the last election was I actually reasonably involved. Is withdrawing from states fairly common? I have never heard of that before.

Also, if McCain dropped out of the race for any reason (health), does Scarah automatically take the top of the ticket or would the RNC find someone else?

And where has Joe Biden been hiding? My, he’s quite a diamond in the rough. I never knew much about him, but DO remember him warning Bush/cronies to pay attention to the Geneva convention, as his son was in the military. I honestly didn’t know much about him until Obama picked him. What a guy.

Oh, and…I don’t think race is going to play into this as much as we fear. I think many mildly bigoted people will “hold their nose and pull the lever”, so to speak. But that could be because I was raised in the 70s and am, honestly, color blind. I understand it is a bigger hurdle for some of the older folks, but I don’t think it is for the younger generation. And I think the people who are mildly bigoted will be pleasantly surprised by President Obama. 🙂

hamlet: An excellent commentary.
My impression of Sarah Palin is not only does she lack what you so accurately describe as ‘vehicle intelligence’, I believe she lacks vehicle humanity. I commented it on back when she was first thrust upon the national scene as I watched her interaction with her brand-new baby. I contrasted her interactions with little Trig to my own interactions with my own babies and how every single time I held them or took them into my arms I gave them a quick kiss them on the forehead so they always had the reassurance that Mom was there and she loved them. I just never see that with Sarah Palin. I always see Sarah Palin as being first and foremost about Sarah Palin and everyone else, including her small children, are just have an important but supporting role in “The Sarah Palin Show.”
I think what the Republican strategists who are in charge of writing this Palin show script (and who certainly must all be men) are unable to do is to instill any sense of humanity and humility in Sarah Palin. The whole idea that this woman should be portrayed as a ‘pitbull with lipstick’ instead of an intelligent woman made of flesh and blood who has feelings and fears and opinions and self-doubts is a huge mistake. Most women, especially the ones who the Republicans wanted her to connect with, are instead repulsed by her. Her looks have absolutely nothing to do with how most of us perceive her.
Sarah Palin is so scripted and so calculated right down to her phony ‘winks’ that she is truly a cartoon caricature of a real flesh and blood woman.

I don’t recall Bradley making a big position statement just before the election, but there are all kinds of reasons why my long-term memory might not be perfect. If he did, it was probably on gun control, because one of the big deals on that ballot was a handgun registration initiative. I do remember some post-election analysis that the initiative might have led to a higher Republican turnout.

The thing is, though, Bradley was still 5-6% ahead in polls taken the day before the election. Hell, he was ahead in the exit polls. I remember that. It was kind of a wrench when the actual results were announced.

I think (hope) Obama will win. Certainly, we couldn’t have asked for a better competitive situation. And, while the tanking of the economy is not simply background for the election, it does favor the Democrats (as it did Bill Clinton). Regarding Obama’s remarks that he thinks race will be a wash, though — it depends on WHERE the pro and con votes happen. If he gains 5% in Texas and loses 5% in Ohio for being Black, he may lose Ohio, and he’ll still lose Texas.

Also, the Bradley Effect does not refer to the absolute value of racially-influenced voting; it refers to the fact that people lie to pollsters about it. We don’t want to be counting our chickens (or moose?) in any state until he has a 6-8% lead in the polls.

BTW, I am 100% certain that the Obama campaign is all over this. Bradley got blindsided by being the first, and in “deep-blue” California, at that. In retrospect, it seems clear that he could have won with a more vigorous GOTV effort.

Riverside

It’s snowing in the high Sierras to the West of me. It must be. This morning, just as I woke up, I saw a Black Phoebe repeatedly flying off her perch on a garden stake to snatch insects from the surrounding mint. A morning dove sentinal (the doves clain possession of my kitchen garden) finally flew down and drove her off. We in California’s Central valley are having our first light rain of the fall. Months of dust are dripping from leaves. (Pray for more rain, folks, our area is drought ridden.)

Looking out my study window now, there are two pairs of Lesser Goldfinches preening themselves just four feet away. They are here to extract the tiny seeds from the multi-branched valley sunflowers blooming in patches all around my house. What a thrill to see a moose wandering through your surroundings. I am just happy to watch Western Fense Lizards and baby Nothern Mocking Birds out my window. I would just about die of excitement if I saw a moose wander across my yard. (This valley used to have pronghorn and grizzleys and Roosevelt elk before the ranchers and then farmers claimed every inch of it. Used to have salmon runs too. Now we have billions in crops and billions in “stressed” properties. And the water is running out. And the air is up there with the country’s most polluted. And unemployment hit the roof. Best joke right now is to hear the Repubs blaming it all on the illegal immigants. Builders and farmers blame the problems on the people they counted on for cheap labor to drive up their profits. ROTFL.)

The birds and lizards want it back. They have been patiently hanging on, hoping for a break. Maybe they will get word to the pronghorn if opportunities open up.

People used to shoot big game here, now there isn’t any to be found. Used to call this valley “the California Serengetti”.

Just a thought, Alaskans.

Palin has also been advised to bring Rev. Wright back into focus. How much sense does that make…considering her lovely witch doctor friend. Good god..how low will those people go.

Her lovely witch doctor friend from Kenya…where a very high percentage of young females are coerced/forced into undergoing female genital mutilation. There is no record of Pastor Thomas Muthee, his 400-odd fellow pastors, or the 400-odd churches which he helped found and which are affiliated with the Word of Faith Church having ever uttered one word against the FGM practice.

My repub sister yesterday said, “Didn’t Palin do a great job last night? She won the debate, everyone said so.” I just didn’t bother to respond and told her I could not talk about politics with her. There is no reason, I’m not going to say anything to change her mind.

I work with people that I don’t see very often but when I do they all go on and on about how great Palin is and how it wouldn’t be a bad thing for McCain to die so that Palin could be pres. They are most of the time nice people but are crazy about this. Course I am here in Tn they are from KY and IN only get together once or twice a month.

I hate living in Red country.

Hmm. I didn’t know about Oscar and Brian. I’ll have to remember them.

My Mother says all squirrels are named “Petey”.

I think they do very well, considering they all seem to have very bad arthritis. (Have you ever looked really closely at a squirrel’s hands and feet? Well, now, there you go.)

Racism. Last night I was watching the history of the Ku Klux Klan on the History channel. I hardly could stomach it. They showed the cross burnings, and the talk of the fire being the light of Christ etc. They didn’t stop to consider that Jesus was a Jew, and by burning a cross, they were actually antichristian. The most chilling of the segment was hearing the interviews with David Duke. Educated people in suits talking racist trash. Reminded me of what someone said, that many of the Nazis in Germany had advanced college degrees. I am so surprised that intelligent people cannot look beyond the packaging of their fellow human beings, and look at what they are inside. I don’t have an advanced college degree. I have a two year degree from a community college, and I’m not even working in that field of study anymore, however, I cannot understand how intelligent people can look at the ‘packaging’ of other humans, and not see what is inside them. It reminds me of a song John Prine sings, about some people not being even human….
