Alaskans for Truth will bring the petition demanding Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg’s resignation to the Department of Law.
When: TODAY, Wednesday, October 1 at 11:30am
Where: On the sidewalk outside the Atwood Building (550 W. 7th Avenue, downtown Anchorage)
Haven’t signed the petition? Click Below. We will be accepting signatures from in-state and out-of-state residents until further notice. The point is to make our presence known and our voices heard.
Before I move off-topic, I *have* signed the petition yesterday.
Now, I’m wondering about little baby Trig. Where is he? Did Sarah officially stop nursing him? Is Bristol still around to take care of him?
Is the Petition for Alaska residents or anyone? I would think that it is a state issue and not a national issue but I see many people from out of state signing??
Fries with a side order of mooseshit. Hey, does anyone outside of (mostly eastern) Canada put gravy on their fries? What about vinegar?
They put gravy on fries here in W PA and also fries on their salads!
I have high hopes for the petition.
I don’t know if Alaska has a provision for referendums, as we do here in Califonia, but if there is, it’s time for a referendum to have the Alaska AG voted into office, not appointed by the governor.
Grammy a/k/a Commando Coalfire Palin (10:26:43) :

———
I think that they (WE!) are going for impact. This is not a “legal” petition, so much as a knock their socks off and get some attention petition.
It’s a clear beautiful day. The Truth should be visible for miles!
And fries on salads seems strange. Strange, but strangely attractive. Fries on a pita with tzatziki and feta cheese + lettuce +tomato + onions is favorite of mine. I guess I could just leave out the pita.
New site officially down?
I’m looking forward to seeing how the petition turns out. Will they allow you inside? Will they take it seriously? To bad for them if they don’t. It just makes them look like they are hiding or denying the facts.

About 22 years ago we were served fried with horseradish on the side in Canada.
@plwalsh: The new site is down due to a blown server. We’re back to our original home for now.

Palin plays the flute, what a trainwreck.
Already signed—have a happy “delivery!”
Off topic—seems the McC camp forgot to look deeply at Gwen Ifill before agreeing to have her moderate the debate. Now, maybe they never watch PBS, or maybe they were just happy to have a woman, don’t know. But Gwen has a book coming out in January about the effect of the Obama campaign on and the emergence of people of color in politics. Book was announce weeks before she was offered up as a possible moderator.
Now McC & SWWNBN are (*sigh*) upset.
Who’s running that campaign? And are they getting paid for it?
Supersize my fries please!
Hey if nothing else, this will keep the spotlight on where it belongs! WOO HOO!
As a Canadian, I have never had fries with horseradish. I do like fries with mayo on the side…(think that is more french) we also have poutine which is fries, gravy, and cheese curds on top. It is delicious.
I personally like gravy on my fries, but hubby just likes ketchup..and vinegar.
I prefer ranch or bleu cheese dressing to dip my fries in.
I believe that more people would have signed the petition if access to the site had not been knocked out for a while or confusing.
Conspiracy theory: Did someone purposely screw up the site to prevent more signatures?
Who knows….but hopefully this petition makes a difference!
We have vinegar with our “fries” (better known as chips here).
Sorry to be off topic again, but without the forum…….
Eyebrow raising article about Mccain in the rolling stone; and I mean eyebrow getting caught on the hairline raising….

I love it that we have so many Canadian Mudpups!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
Your anthem is awesome – I’ve sung it at many Sabres games!
From England aka Spoon Archer Palin (10:49:33) :
Not off topic at all. We do occasionally talk about the issues…and this article is getting a lot of chatter on the bedtime thread.
A bit off topic too but I keep replaying Katie’s * taken off guard* moment when she arrived to greet Sarah at the hotel door, surprised to see Willow tagging along for the interview. I think Katie was not informed that it would be a 2 on 1 kinda day.
What, Sarah couldn’t find a suitable baby-sitter? The baby-sitters that were available wouldn’t accept Johnny Mac/Cindy’s credit card for payment? Sarah needed a shield? WIllow needed high school credits for Politics 101?
The petition is for anyone, not just Alaska..AKM has stated this several times, so sign if you haven’t so we will make a good show!
@Shove Maggot Palin:
“Fries on a pita with tzatziki and feta cheese + lettuce +tomato + onions is favorite of mine.”
Excuse me, but YUCK! Why would you do that to tzatziki?
ishtar, I was wondering the same thing this morning. I haven’t seen Sarah with Trig since a day or two after the convention. Has anyone else seen or heard what’s up with the little one. I’m not saying she should be dragging the baby out on stage at every campaign stop and am really hoping that doesn’t happen again like at the convention. I was just wondering if she’d posted any motherly love photo’s with the baby on her conservative women’s websites or blogs. Surely that would bring her ratings up in their eyes.
Well, I don’t want to tell her how to excite her base. She seems to have them all googoo over her amazing knowledge and vast experience as gov.
Well thank you suchanut! I like our anthem too. It isnt as stirring as the American anthem..its understated I guess…like most Canadians. I still cry when its sung at big gatherings though. My dad would have tears streaming down his face..he loved it so.
Or as it said on the menu in a Chinese lestaurant: A little fly outside, a little fly inside.
Petition signed.
I wonder if they will have any “film at 11:00” on the delivery of the petition?
Have to laugh at the sub-thread (is there such a thing?) on fries. Here in the South Carolin Midlands, fries with white vinegar and salt are a big State Fair treat. (Starting next week! Woo hoo!!) When I lived in Berlin, I loved “pomme frites” with curry mayo. Also, fries with the jaegerschnitzel (mushroom) gravy were lovely. In Belfast, I discovered the pleasures of brown sauce on fries. These days, fries are a rarer treat due to the whole “shifting of the center of gravity” thing….
*Sigh* “South Carolin-a”….. I can spell, just not on Wednesdays…..
Signed when it first appeared. My thrill to sign it. Don’t care if my signature is only a statement. Good for them to know that people across the nation are watching.
As for fries, lately I’m into baked sweet potato fries. Lower in calories, healthier and totally delicious.
DeMo, what a good idea! I’ll have to try those instead.
I’ve been unable to get through on themudflats.net now for more than a day. Did that site fall over? Or are they barring Canadians? I was expecting an explanation here on the “old” site.
Ishtar (Icepick Motor Palin) (10:24:47) :
Now, I’m wondering about little baby Trig. Where is he? Did Sarah officially stop nursing him? Is Bristol still around to take care of him?
I saw her carrying him down the stairs from her airplane a couple of days ago. She was holding him like he was a rag doll.
That Rolling Stone article is really telling.
All this time I’ve been wondering why McFluff would choose such a dolt, and now I know.
He’s a baby – not a man. He can’t hold his own with men as ‘partners’ because they might have a differing opinion and not defer. Anyway, he needed a woman to ‘shore up’ that female voters thing (I really believe he thinks women shouldn’t have the vote, now)
Now, who could he choose? What woman would put up with being the puppet and still have the credentials to pass nomination qualifiers?
I sat and thought through my head all of the women he could have picked. But, not one of them would be without an opinion of their own.
So, he picked Mrs. I – let- my- husband-tell-me-what-to -do Nutbar Clueless Palin, since he could lay down the law (I’m positive he’s shown his mysogenistic side to her by now), tell her a bunch of BS about himself (knowing she will never fact-check) and make sure she doesn’t put a step wrong.
Just like he stepped in to clear the press when Cindy’s Vicodin addiction came to light, he sits next to Palin and answers for her.
So, what’s wrong with women voters? This idiot should be in jail, not running for President! His daddy got him out of trouble his whole life. He’s an expert liar/whiner. He DISRESPECTS women.
I almost feel sorry for Palin, except that the Monegan thing shows (and her own continual lying) she’s just a female McCain, right down to disrespecting women (rape-kits, indeed!).
What part of her Christian ethic says it’s okay to kill other people/children (bomb Iran, attack Pakistan) but not protect a woman from an unwanted and violent conception?
Scary.
Greg: We’ve had server issues due to a huge influx (AKM said 6000) of people coming to the new site. Have been waiting for a few hours now for server guy to fix it.
Hey, Greg! The new Mudflats site apparently crashed due to lots of traffic. They’re working on it. And we’re all very glad to have Canadian Mudpuppies in the family.
Oooohh… Icy Russia.. All great minds…. LOL!
Sorry, missed the “server issues” post. I thought that the petition had been the last thing I read and hadn’t gone back further.
Well . . . it’s 3:30 EDT – 11:30 AKDT – the petition should be delivered any minute. . . .
“please type a comment”? I did. Is this server overloaded, too?
Anyhow, I saw the server post after all. Thanks.

This is way off topic here, but is anyone else having problems with the forum? Every time I try to go there I get this error message:
“Not Extended
A mandatory extension policy in the request is not accepted by the server for this resource.”
Anyone have any idea what that means?
Okay, “problem child”…. You aren’t helping with the “center of gravity” thing….
(smile!!)
I have no idea what the message means, but I have gotten it, too. I’m guessing the same server as themudflats.net?
ok, now that I finally got that comment to post, I see other’s are having trouble with it too. Imagine that, there’s too many mudpuppies 😀
Melangell aka Missile Blunt Palin
I can’t believe you beat me to it–invoking the specter of the South Carolina State FAir and vinegar fries. I am just too slow at the keyboard.
But for the rest of you fry-curious, come to Columbia SC and get the Confederate Fried Steak at Yesterday’s. It comes smothered in a white gravy that you must put on your side of “fat ole fries.” OMG!! Can’t eat it more than once a year, as it is heart-attack-on-a-plate. Need I say how good it is, though?
Also in W PA, there is the Original Hot Dog House in Pittsburgh. Fries with Cheez Whiz! Yum, better than it sounds, for sure!
OK, time to quit talking about food-but I’m only slightly off topic.
Hmmm…McCain: I have confidence Ifill will do a professional job.
Don’t any of his handlers tell him about their nefarious plans?
I miss the forum. I think the evil Republicans are behind the crash.
I haven’t been able to get to the new site for awhile.

Who was holding him like a rag doll? SP or Bristol?
HAD to put in one quote from the ADN story:
Two aides say they struggled to get their candidate to focus for the gubernatorial debates:
Palin, the former aides said, had a sharply limited attention span for absorbing the facts and policy angles required for all-topics debate preparation. Staffers were rarely able to get her to sit for more than half an hour of background work at a time before her concentration waned, hindered by cell phone calls and family affairs. “We were always fighting for her attention,” said one of the aides.
Strike Chipper: Aww…you didn’t mention the deep fried Twinkies!
Sigh….I’m a sucker for all foods deep flied….tried to deep fry an orange when I was a kid. Won’t share that recipe with y’alls.

Is this new? or did I miss something in the Crash?
Shoot,..I meant to post this, too,…
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=14&entry_id=30967
Hey, Strike Chipper! Never ventured into Yesterday’s. Up until a couple of years ago, my daughter would show her horse with the YMCA Equestrian team, so we spent entire weekends at the Fair. We should have a Mudpuppy reunion down in Five Points.
Huffington Post has a video of excerpts from debates and interviews from Palin’s 2006 governor’s race. She is terrific! She seems very self-assured, articulate, well informed, assertive, tough, fair minded, reponsible. You can see why she won the election. What happened to her after McCain’s choice? Has the campaign done some sort of head job on her? Or are have they just been lowering expectations for a knock-out performance on Thursday? (That seems hardly possible given how dismally the Couric interviews came across.)
Anyone see the Mat Su Valley Frontiersman “interview” with Palin yesterday? They sent her a list of softball questions, then printed her emailed replies. Duhhh.
The interview is nothing, but the comments are great….like this one…
“Dostoevsky wrote on Sep 30, 2008 3:03 PM:
” Dear Friend, I comes to you as favor my royal famly is from great nations Georgia. I haves millions of rubles. Bekaus my famly is pro USA, Putin perscute us. Pleas send 20000 US dollars to me by Western Union and my prince uncle Vladmir will reward you 1 million dollars.
Come on Frontiersman, don’t believe everything that’s delivered to your inbox; that’s what the spam folder is for. ”
I commented too….mentioning Mudflats….but they seem to have lost it….
This from the Father Jonathon at FoxForum online about Sarah Palin…
“….America is starving for some sincerity. We know instinctively we are in trouble today on Wall Street — and on every street — because we have lost our way. Our troubles are not technical; they are human, they are moral. And who would doubt the perfect form of sincerity is an honest mother who listens to us, a courageous woman who speaks the truth to us, a strong lady who works for us?…..”
Full story at http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/09/29/frj_0929/
And most of the blog comments that follow it are equally nauseating! Just a little reality check for us that our work is not done!
Go Mudpuppies!
Oh, what happened to the Fun Things? The site on the side that had the Palin baby name site? I hope it didn’t get lost.
Also, sounds like Bill Clinton really came out swining for Obama.
Grammy- just as I suspected- A.D.D.!! And so much for loyal aides! 😉
Odd that Palin before McCain seems like a totally different person, much less strident among other things. Is it just because she knows Alaska and feels comfortable there? My sense is that Alaska is a fairly homogeneous state in terms of political viewpoints and cultural norms. Maybe the idea of the wider world she is in now just has her spooked?

Gotta’ give that a try. I like Grey Poupon on my baked potatoes. Does that bring me closer to elitist?
@plwalsh:
“Is it just because she knows Alaska and feels comfortable there?”
You’re right. She’s fine with Alaska, but with the rest of the world she is in over her head.
See, I knew she had something keeping her from getting by at one school for more than a couple semesters! ADHD! She probably never got the help she needed to figure out a good way to study and would just move on when her grades got bad, looking for a place to fit in better. I would LOVE to see her transcripts. Not that there’s anything wrong with having ADD, ADHD, dsylexia, etc. It’s common and doesn’t mean anything other than someone has to work a little harder than someone without it.
I’m just saying she doesn’t have a very rigorous educational background, which I find important in the Oval Office. I want someone better and smarter than me in there.
After reading all the comments about fries I just have to add my favorite way to eat them. Fries dipped in a chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. YUMMMY!
I sure hope the Obama camp takes that sound bite from McCain about being a dictator and slams it all over TV. There was no smirk, no smile, I believe he was for once being as truthful as he knows how to be. Just spent the last 20 minutes or so reading the Rolling Stone article. What a story. It was nice to see all the pieces of a puzzle put into order. I had read most everything in there..from different sources..but reading it all together is just plain eewwww! From the first paragraph to the end I was Ill. God help us all if these two get into office.
However, with Ohio & Florida turning bluer each and every day. Right now the McCalin’s have little chance of winning.
And of course this was sent via a Blackberry that John McCain invented.
I have no doubt that Gwen Ifill will do a good job with the debate. She knows who is on stage and what the role of moderator should be–she’s smart and she is a professional!
The fact that she’s written a book about race and politics should not necessarily disqualify her for this job. What the hell does that have to do with Joe vs. Sarah? She put Obama’s name in the title, so what? Seems appropriate, can anyone name a more prominent black politician? Good grief!
I’m just happy that she didn’t drink the KoolAid, so we have a chance at having a well-moderated “debate.”
But I fully expect her to be slammed all over the place by the McInsane followers, anyway, regardless of how it goes.( Because they were too stupid to do the research and find a “reason” to object to Ifill)
And now I’m going to go look for french fries…
Is AK time 1 hour earlier than Pacific time?
Bill Clinton has finally jumped on the bandwagon for Barack… Guess he watched Saturday Night Live last weekend.
“Clinton Says Obama Has `Better’ Answers for Economy, Country”
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=ao0JNQcTCkHk&refer=us
Maybe Joe Biden needs to watch the Karate Kid before the debates and brush up on the ‘wounded pelican’ maneuver just in case.
All this flubdubbering w/ Couric etc. could be a total act to throw everyone off.
As they say…if the bar is lowered to the lowest level and she goes one degree above that they can claim she won the debate. Ya never know.
Don’t assume anything with this shebeast.
Yes. AK = (-05:00) CA = (-06:00)

I posted this on the thread below but I want to repost it here to make sure all your wonderful Mudflatters see it:
Thanks to everyone who gave me help with posting that link to the Rolling Stone Article.
I agree that it should be required reading for every voter.
As some of you might have read before, every week I go to some nursing homes around here and hold political discussions. This week, along with my usual material (I am unabashedly what the kid next door calls an Obama girl), I printed off a few copies and shared them with some older voters this afternoon at the nursing home who aren’t on the computer and would never look at Rolling Stone.
One of the men who read it, a WWII soldier, said I finally ‘made my case’ for why he should vote for Obama instead of a fellow veteran. To which I replied, “on election day, it would be an honor to drive you to the polls, Mr Baxter”.
Thanks again everyone!
What’s the content of this Rolling Stone article?
If you go to http://www.fivethirtyeight.com and look at their electoral vote graph you get a good idea of McCain/Palin’s current chances. The blue lines on the right of the chart show how many times the simulations said Obama was going to win and with how many electoral votes. The red lines on the left of the chart show how many times McCain came out on top.
OMG galwhohashadenough! Wendy’s fries coated with Frosty was one of my favorite things to eat when I was pregnant!! I couldn’t get enough! LOL!
plwalsh, it’s a detailed history of John McCain. It has the ring of well researched truth to it (up to and including quotes from McCain himself).
@soCalGal: “All this flubdubbering w/ Couric etc. could be a total act to throw everyone off.”
You could be right. But, although many people might need a minute to name other Supreme Court decisions, beside Roe vs. Wade, very few people would not be able to name ANY publications they read in order to keep informed on what is going on in the rest of the nation and the world.
The light may be on, but it just seems that nobody is home.
Thanks Woods, I got the email from Sephyroth about the trial run for the chatroom tonight, and just wanted to make sure.

May the Spirit of the Cosmic Wolf Mother defending her pups be upon Palin tomorrow night. It is not a full moon on Earth. But it is a full moon somewhere in the Universe.
Redwood Man:
Daily Kos has come up for a reason why Palin couldn’t say what publications she reads. They found a photo of Palin, apparently as a Wasilla city counselor. On her desk is a copy of the journal of the John Birch Society. If that is her typical reading material, then at least she was smart enough not to say so on national TV.
Oh God the CNN profile of McCain was scary enough! What else could Rolling Stone have come up with?
I think this a link to that pick
http://www.jbs.org/index.php/jbs-news-feed/2995
@Cassie — I just read the cr*p about Gwen Ifill. We all had been wondering what kind of shenanigans McShame and his lot would try to pull in order to protect dear Sarah and have her not debate — isn’t this just oh-so-convenient now, all of a sudden, to notice there are qualities about Gwen Ifill, the debate moderator, that they don’t like !!
As far as Sarah’s list of publications, I think she needs to start with “My Weekly Reader” then progress to “Jack & Jill” because her basic overall knowledge is deeply flawed, as evidenced by the continuous streams of empty and incorrect answers she spews !
@plwalsh:
LOL, too bad SP didn’t screw up and mention the JBS journal.
You’ve got to read the Rolling Stone article. It’s 10 pages, but so worthwhile. As has been said, you can’t make this stuff up:

Rolling Stone really fleshed out the profile. It’s a really long article but well worth the read.
Everyone in AZ ought to read it too just to ensure he never gets elected or appointed to any position ever again when this election is over and his term as senator is over.
I still have it linked if you mouse over my name.

My eyebrows still stuck to my hairline. If this doesn’t do it then I don’t know what else will. If people won’t vote for Obama, then let’s hope this will make them not vote for Mccain —–how to get it out though????
Obama addressing Senate on C-Span right now.
Hard to tell w/ that McCain’s face video. Could be he’s just tired….
C-Span 2. Sorry.
Palin, explaining why she’s the Joe six-pack candidate:
“The relatively low number of investments that we have, looking at the hit that we’re taking, probably $20,000 last week in his 401(k) plan that was hit. I’m thinking, geez, the rest of America, they’re facing the exact same thing that we are,” she said.
Palin was asked to clarify why things are tight for her family.
“It’s just the great financial crisis that America is in, as our savings accounts also, and a 401(k), they’re being hit,” she said.
She didn’t explain how her savings account was being affected.”
Fly me to the moon. Now.

Obama is on CNN again, giving another great speech. Can you just imagine Sarah delivering a speech like this.
Gwen’s book isn’t out & no one really knows how she feels about Obama. Right wingers are getting desperate.
Is the forum down?
Just finished the Rolling Stone article. OMG. I knew the worst of this stuff already but having it laid out like this certain makes the case that McCain should never, ever be president. I hope this gets wide circulation, especially the part about the flip-flops.
I think the scariest thing of all his McCain’s flat denials of the truth of his record. He must believe his own lies. As he said himself, he and Palin are true soul mates. Yuck!
I would think that the petition would have been presented by now. Does anyone know how many Muddies were delivering?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/oct/01/sarahpalin.climatechange
Interesting article in today’s Guardian. Why don’t our MSMs cover these things?
ENP: It’s been down for most of the day…will post when it comes back up again…
I was amazed over 1,100+ signatures when I signed the petition. If nothing else, this will show the powers that be in Alaska that they aren’t in Kansas anymore!
I have a question…why does McCain keep saying that Sarah Palin is the most popular governor? Was there a vote that I missed? Please give me a link!

Good! I am glad that her book is causing them anxiety. I have always thought something was alittle “off” about McCain, and much of what you read indicates that it certainly is so – but a few things I had heard were so inappropriate, so outrageous, that surely they could not be true……Unfortunately, today I have read a few things that make me think that they are true – and if so, no one who knows this person who really loves our country, should stand for his being the Republican nominee. We need to question the patriotism of THEIR party for putting forth this ticket.
The first thing I doubted was that I had heard that he had
called his wife a really filthy, crude name in front of other people, I thought was so over the top as not to be true (not that he would call her that – I believed that – but that he lacked the self control and called her that in FRONT of many witnesses). The Rolling Stone article repeated this story and lent credibility to it, and I now believe it must be true. Another thing I doubted was an email a friend sent to me which was supposedly written by a couple who had the misfortune to be at a private resort in Turtle Island with McCain, his wife and his family. When I read it, I thought, oh, all of this is over the top. But then I read the Rolling Stone article……..Apparently he was an unbelievably boorish lout (believable) who constantly chidded every female guest and especially his wife, Cindy, about their weight at meals, and openly talked about the beauty of Asian women and how “our” women on a corn fed diet cannot have as desirable a figure – and was all over another guests Thai wife to the point they moved dining seats. And there was more….. Really disgusting. So, it is not just the ordinary ravages of time (not just senility) but a really disturbing nature that make him so offensive to look at and to listen to…… a deep seated nuttiness and ugliness that has always been there and is more apparent the spotlight is on him and we watch him interact with the media and others. It begs the quetsion – what are we as a nation to do if he is elected? This guy and Ms. Palin will have us longing for the good old Bush and Cheney days…….It is almost unthinkable to have that out of control temper and personality in the white house. I mean, we all know Johnson was more than alittle odd and eccentric. But this looks really dangerous. Why are more stories not coming out about this temper? ? We need to push the MSM to let us know more about this and his suitability temperment wise. I keep hoping he will explode in one of the debates. That would be PERFECT – i think that is why he talks in that slow creepy condescending manner – it is how he keeps his temper.
Oh dear me! the flute section of the beauty pageant – Bloody Hell! is is the funniest thing I have seen in, O Forever!

Hey, does anyone outside of (mostly eastern) Canada put gravy on their fries? What about vinegar?
————————————————
Absolutely !!
In Western new york here (Buffalo area) and gravy on french fries is a staple !
Also vinegar !
Another biggie are taco fries – a batch of fries just out of the fryer, and top them with a healthy scoop of cooked ground beef (crumbled), sliced jalapenos, hot sauce and a dollop of sour cream on top !
Forum’s up…
@ UK Lady
Oh… oh… bloody hell with sugar on top… thanks for that. If that’s what she can do after playing the flute for a decade, then tomorrow’s debates will be a breeze after a month of cramming.
I had to edit this before posting to remove the snide comments, but oh, I wish I were just slightly meaner – it would be so satisfying.
PS. I played the flute too, can I be VP?
There is nothing more beautiful than the Canadian National Anthem when it is sing in French !
Who was the gentleman that always sang it so remarkably at the old Montreal Forum ?
Also have been to many a Sabre game at HSBC arena in Buffalo, and at the Old Aud (May She Rest in Peace), and both anthems are always sung – gives you chills to hear them back to back before a hockey game !
UK Lady- ROFLMAO 10 years of study and that’s all she’s got? Basic BASIC melody! And half of the performance was drowned out by the band!
Thanks for the laugh! 😉
Darn them for coming out with Bingo cards AFTER I made some on my own! Thanks for the great words for mine Mudflatters! I think the words you all came up with are the best!
I was listening to an interview of McCain on NPR this morning. He said that he has turned to Palin for advice on foreign policy many times. Heaven help the world!
When questioned about the tenor of the campaign, he restated that he is proud of his campaign and gave his standard “if Obama had only agreed to those 10 town hall debates the tenor of this campaign would have been different.” As he was so self-righteously making that same tired old ‘justification,’ I thought to myself that he made me think of a man who had just beaten his wife and then said to her, “This would not have happened if you had not talked back to me.”
@NY Dem
Changing the subject a little…..have lots of relatives in the Buffalo area & love buffalo wings….the hot sauce & vinegar on the chicken….blue cheese…..fries etc.
Just a note for fun talk. Katie asked Sarah about what printed media she reads. Why? Because in an earlier segment Sarah said that was how she learned about foreign affairs instead of traveling abroad. So when she refused to answer the printed media question, she actually dodged two questions.
@Jan Arnold (13:27:15)
you’re right. As every day goes by, and more info comes out…it dawns on me that a third term of Bush/Cheney even, would be better than Mcpalin. And that’s a scary thought
Oh, Exactly, ColoradoGal! That is him through and through. And HE gives the talk about accountability the other day. Someone needs to hold HIM accountable.
Oh, before I crawl into bed (getting late in this bit of Europe and I think tomorrow will be an all-nighter), I want to leave you with the comments of a good friend of mine about Palin’s alleged “sexy librarian” look. He is a man whose ideal fantasy is the sexy librarian, so I asked him what he thought of Palin – his response: “She’s no librarian, librarians have to look and behave as if they can read books.”
I know, it’s completely OT, but it cheered me up ever so slightly – and it should cheer up all the real librarians out there too!
G’night all – glad the forum is back up to keep you busy!

I too just spent the last 1/2 hour reading the Rolling Stone article on McCain. All I can say is “Wow!” I knew bits and pieces but seeing it all put together this is one scary a-hole.
I’ve emailed the link to the article to everyone I know.
I tell them, “I know this is long but just read the first few paragraphs because after you do you won’t stop until you’ve read it all.”
Just what we need. A guy with a short man complex who’s still looking for his daddys approval.
And why the hell was this guy flying airplanes at all?????????
Darn, got caught reading a little ahead there. For a second I thought it said he had resigned. Well there’s no honor among thieves so I’m sure he won’t leave unless he’s hauled out kicking and screaming.
Sad what McCain’s thugs have done to the state of Alaska and it’s people. I don’t know much about Colberg but I doubt he would have thought of this or done this without the McCain campaigns lawyers and hacks thinking it up and setting him loose to do it. Having said that, he didn’t have the scruples or nerve to say no so let the chips fall as they may.
This site being down so close to the debates had me thinking that the Cheney/Rove shadow goons were attempting to censure you. Thankkfully it was just typical ‘puter glitches….glad to see you back!
Gallup has Obama ahead, but McCain closing in. I’m afraid the sheeple will fall in love with her again tomorrow night. The Palin supporters don’t seem to have any interest in going beyond her smile and gestures. She’s a mother, and a Christian, and she’s not one of the “Washington elite”. That’s all they want. I can’t take much more.

Concerning fries and what people put on them. Worse thing I ever saw was in Belgium where they put mayonaisse on them. Didn’t have the nerve to try them but it may not be too bad. Me, I’ll stick with ketchup thank you. 🙂
Re fries—I put mustard on them (or vinegar or ranch dressing); can’t stand that “vegetable” ketchup on anything!
nate of fivethirtyeight.com is saying that the Obama camp should be agreeing to Ifil’s withdrawal because:
“Both campaigns probably have a pretty good idea of what types of questions she is likely to ask, how he is likely to ask them. Palin and Biden have undoubtedly watched videotapes of Ifill moderating the 2004 debate between John Edwards and Dick Cheney.”
And
“By changing the moderator, you’re throwing everyone a curveball, and catering to the candidate who is better able to adapt on the fly. Which, most likely, is not going to be Sarah Palin.”
re: fries
Salt and vinegar!
I apologize for my ignorance but, what does SWWNBN stand for? The chat at the camera site has certainly taken a different slant with all the Dutch folks there.
She who will not be named
@ColoradoGal:
I heard that little interview on NPR too! Disgusting! Talking about his goal being to run a “moral campaign” or some such utter crap! Then the interviewer asked him why he had that advert about Obama wanting elementary school kids to have sex ed, and he trotted out him pathetic lame lie about it “being true” and the documents support it and other such bullshit. It totally disgusted me! I actually check a while ago to see if the transcript was available on their site so that I could link it here, but it says 7pm tonight it will be available. Of course it’s preaching to the choir with this crowd, we are all well aware that he & his running mate are pathological liars & that “moral” is not exactly the tenor of their campaign…
I am so tired of the “Joe Six Pack” and the “I’m just like every other American” and the people that like her because she “Is just like me!” “She didn’t go to an ivy league school, I like that.”
You don’t vote for someone who is “just like you” to be vice president of the United States. You vote for someone who is “just like you” to be president of the PTA!
What is wrong with people?!
I stumped for WWW (Wicked Witch of Wassila) but…
SWWNBN=She Who Will Not Be Named. That’s from the Harry Potter books, if you’ve not read them. The villain of the series is Voldemort, and they are too scared to say his name out loud so call him “He who will not be named.”
I bought the first Harry Potter book for my daughter when she was 8 solely because I read somewhere that it had been banned at libraries in Alabama or some other bible belt state. Because it’s evil witchcraft stuff, of course. My daughter, like zillions of other kids (and parents) in the world, was so into those books and it totally fired up her interest in reading. She has been a non-stop reader ever since.
Take that book-banner SWWNBN & other like-minded paranoid evangelicals!
@knikgoose (11:43:31) :
I had to stop listening to that broadcast halfway through. NAUSEATING. She is complaining their “meagre” stocks got hit? That she doesn’t know how she will put her kids through college???? WHICH kids are going to college?? How much did she spend on that designer jacket she wore at the RNC? She is Joe Six-Pack?? Give me a break–she may be slugging the six-packs back, but that’s about the limit of that connection.
Sorry if this has been addressed earlier–I just got as far as knickgoose’s post and now I need another drink.
I can’t help it..I’m a poll watcher and now there is more to crow about
According to Real Clear Politics, Obama/Biden now have 259 electoral votes in states that are leaning with at least a +5 in the latest average polls. There are still 9 states which are considered tossups. Obama/Biden have the edge currently in 7 of them.
Nevada just came in +1 and +4 for Obama..stealing it away from the McCain camp and Missouri has edged closer coming in +1 for Obama for the first time in months. I think it will do some good to campaign there…perhaps just after the primaries in St. Louis tomorrow.
I always thought it meant ‘she who will never blink, nohow!
I agree with the person above who said to switch moderators.
Joe can handle anyone. He’s seen them all.
She’ll have more trouble preparing for someone new than for Ifill
Ifill won’t have to watch her back to see if she is seeming too favorable to Obama
They can’t spin it that Ifill was biased if Ifill isn’t there
Maybe Lesley Stahl?
I imagine there are plenty of top notch political journalists willing to put in the time to be prepared for the debate. Heck, I’d put in the time and be ready to ask them questions (okay, I’m a little arrogant and probably overestimating my skills.)
Off topic guys…but do any of you notice that David Gregory NEVER challenges his repub guests?? He just allowed that creep Tom Delay go on and on, with a bunch of horse shit….and never once said anything. What a waste of space he is…him and stupid little smile. What on earth is wrong with the network heads?

Well, the first female that ever caught my fancy with the “sexy librarian” look was Lana Lada at the Methodist Summer Bible School Day Camp a lifetime ago. I lived up the street and she invited me and my sisters to attend the Summer Bible School Day Camp where she taught all the arts and crafts. Sometimes I would try to get extra attention by asking for special help with my coloring. She was just 16 and I was a mere boy and I now fully know and understand having fully lived life that the “sexy librarian” look is generally reserved for older women. But I tell you from my boyish memory bank of long ago, “I knew Lana Lada, Lana Lada was a friend of mine, and Sarah Palin is no Lana Lada”!
Anyone have an update on how the delivery went?

Obama has a 6 point lead averaged across all the polls and his numbers are going nearly straight up. At this rate he’ll be going into Election Day with an 8 to 10 point lead and that spells landslide in anyone’s numbers.
But keep the pressure on. Just unstress (is that a real word) a little
WHOA! I just checked ADN to see if there was *anything* about our Muddies and saw that there was a (small) plane crash at 8th and Orca at 11:30AM!!
I’m going take an educated guess that our Muddies didn’t get a chance to see anyone today.
McCain really is starting to emerge as a thoroughly nasty piece of work, isn’t he?
I just saw the flute solo. EGADS! So terrible that even the orchestra was trying to play over her. I think the piece had 10 notes, all played badly. So, why, if you sucked so badly on an instrument claim to have been playing for 10 years? Seems that SWWNBN has been padding her resume for quite some time. More amazing, she obviously didn’t know she was terrible. This demonstrates her complete lack of insight into her abilities. Grandiosity, narcissism and socio-pathology are traits that we don’t need in the number 2 seat. By the way, is she cross-eyed? Really, I want to know.
[[[“… very few people would not be able to name ANY publications they read in order to keep informed on what is going on in the rest of the nation and the world….”]]]
Pardon, but I disagree. People who actually read newspapers and magazines to keep informed on what is going on in the rest of the nation and world will easily be able to tell you what they read.
Every day I read the Los Angeles Times, cover to cover, except for the sports section (exception: if it’s college football season, then I read about USC) and classifieds. I don’t live near LA so don’t want to get all excited about something to buy there.
Then, depending on what is going on in the world that I am inerested in, I will read the UK Guardian, LeMonde, Sydney Morning Herald, and Al Jazeera. Understand, I just review one or two of these. Then, for special issues (like the earthquake in China or the current debacle on the tainted Chinese baby formula, I’ll read another country’s newspaper (i.e., for the earthquake, I reviewed a Chinese newspaper).
I read “The Nation” second-hand from a friend when she is done with them.
If I see a Time or Newsweek on the newsstand that looks good, I’ll buy that and read it, too.
Of course, there are special issues blogs like Mudflats [[SMOOCH]] in the mix.
But basically my regular baseline reading is the LATimes daily, Mudlats daily, and The Nation once a month.
For Sarah Palin to not even be able to give the name of ONE periodical, IMO, means she has so little interest she doesn’t even look at the headlines as she walks by the newstand or while standing in line at checkout.
She couldn’t remember Alaska Daily News? Time? Newsweek? The first is her state’s major newspaper, the other two are ubiquitous; very hard to miss.

@Political Amazon.
I agree with you regarding newspapers and periodicals. Like you, I have the ones I read all the time…The National Post…Toronto Star…and I will grab any American newspaper anytime I can get it. I live very far north, so I usually have to wait until I travel to the city for that.
I read Time and McLeans religiously, and anything else that is remotely interesting. Like you, I have an interest in the world around me.
My sister god love her is an extremely intelligen person…she is a CA. However…her world view is very small. It doesnt often extend outside her immediate shere. I find Palin to be like that. I mean my god…the woman cant say one sentence that has any structure to it at all. Listening to her is painful.
Sarah Palin just doesnt care….unless its all about her…all the time. lol…I bet she isnt doing much reading these days either. She would hang her head in shame if she did.

COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions [than Roe v. Wade] do you disagree with?
PALIN: Well, let’s see. There’s –of course –in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are–those issues, again, like Roe v Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know–going through the history of America, there would be others but–
COURIC: Can you think of any?
PALIN: Well, I could think of–of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a Vice President, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.
whatever, backing away from the computer.
Wow, that Rolling Stone article is something. I wonder if it was rushed out though– there are some mistakes in it that should have been spotted by any proofreader. “McCain prevailed upon the undersecretary of the Navy that he was ready for Vietnam…” The correct usage is to prevail upon someone to do something– as it is, that phrase in this sentence should be changed to something like “persuaded.” “Flying back from Philadelphia, where he had joined in the reverie of the Army-Navy football game….” I’m assuming the writer meant “revelry;” “reverie” means a daydream.

Mon Dieu! French fries came from France, and are/were generally eaten straight (maybe a touch of salt), comme Dieu voudrait.
______________
For also in the 1840s, pomme frites (“fried potatoes”) first appeared in Paris. Sadly, we don’t know the name of the ingenious chef who first sliced the potato into long slender pieces and fried them. But they were immediately popular, and were sold on the streets of Paris by push-cart vendors.
Frites spread to America where they were called French fried potatoes. You asked how they got their name–pretty obvious, I’d say: they came from France, and they were fried potatoes, so they were called “French fried potatoes.” The name was shortened to “french fries” in the 1930s.
By the way, the verb “to french” in cooking has come to mean to cut in long, slender strips, and some people insist that “french fries” come from that term. However, the French fried potato was known since the middle 1800s, while the OED cites the first use of the verb “to french” around 1895, so it appears pretty convincing that “french fried potatoes” came before the verb “frenching.” The origin of the name is thus the country of origin French and not the cooking term french.
In the U.K., fried fish had been on sale by street vendors since the 1600s. In 1864, a brilliant (but, alas, unknown) Brit teamed French fried potatoes (called “chips” in English) with fried fish, to create the famous and popular fish and chips.
Today, of course, the worldwide popularity of McDonalds and Burger King and Wendy’s and their ilk have brought French fries to the world. Amusingly, they are now often called “American fries” in many countries.
French fries are commonly eaten with ketchup in the U.S., but with malt vinegar (delicious) in the U.K., and with mayonnaise (appalling) in the Netherlands. The French mostly take them straight, but the Belgians have the best idea (as is so often the case with food): they eat frites with buckets full of mussels.

Springsteen, Joel team up for Obama
Tue Sep 30, 5:10 PM ET
WASHINGTON – Rock stars Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are teaming up for their first joint concert to benefit Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.
Obama plans to attend the concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Oct. 16, the day after Obama’s final debate with Republican John McCain at Hofstra University, located several miles outside the city in Hempstead, N.Y.
Seeing the two superstars together won’t come cheap. Tickets start at $500 and range up to $10,000.
The event was first reported by the Huffington Post Web site and confirmed by an Obama aide.
Springsteen also planned to perform Saturday at a Philadelphia rally to boost the Obama campaign’s voter registration drive. Polls show a close race between Obama and McCain in Pennsylvania, a state John Kerry won in 2004.
Sorry if this is a repeat – I haven’t had time to read all the wonderful comments~ wish I did, you are all so bright, committed, and witty.
Have you seen this? McCain, just like Bush, claims he’d really like to be a dictator!

Can she ever just answer a question?
If Gwen Ifill doesn’t do anything tomorrow at all, let her please just once say,
“Governor, could you please rephrase your answer and this time could you say it in a way that just one person in this room could have a clue what your are trying to say? Because, seriously, Governor, we saw your lips moving but all anyone heard was blah-blah-blah-blah-blah.”

1. The reason that Sarah did not name any of the magazines or papers that she reads, is not because she doesn’t know. It is because she is afraid the media will make fun of her and/or tear her apart. She is absolutely terrified of any misstep.
2. The reason she brought Willow on the Couric interview(Remember Katie meeting Sarah at the hotel, and upon seeing Willow say”I didn’t know you’d being joining us” Is because Sarah was trusting Katies’ motherly ways, and hoping Katie would not put her on the spot in front of Willow.

I really don’t think Itil should be the moderator in the debate. This could very well play to the advantage of the McCain campaign. They are raising a hissy fit that she wrote this book, and plus she is an African American woman.
Just think of what white america, who are undecided is going to think, when the McCain camp start to rant after the debate, saying this was unfair and partism with one of Obama’s supporter’s moderating this debate? No, we don’t know who she supports….
No it is not fair, but they are going to start playing the race card again. Chris Matthews said on his show, that the McCain campaign need to start throwing the dirt to get back in this race, as it is their only chance of getting back in to the race.

a sampling of “questions for the VP debate”
Mayor Palin, Barack Obama is a handsome, charismatic demigod. How many boxes of Kleenex will you need after your crushing loss?
Senator Biden, what is your favorite color? And if you have time for a follow-up question: Why?
Mayor, you talk funny and you own a tanning bed. Why haven’t you released Trig’s birth certificate?
Mayor, which is your preferred method of stifling dissent, banning books or burning them? Since it’s both, please explain how you can deny the accusation that you’re a fascist, which I am making now.
Bpoint you are very insightful! Yes she could have named a few newspapers and mags…and she of course was afraid there would be followup. Like: well who is your favorite commentator at Rolling Stone? (just kidding)
And yes, you can bet she was hoping to avoid any tough questions when she asked Willow to accompany her for awhile. Katie sure sounded irked at that, didn’t she?
But your last point is the big one. We all deserve to have ALL the candidates have to answer the really tough questions. Obama faced O’Reilly, right? Biden and McCain have a long history of open access (though they have each choked that down a little lately, to my disappointment).
As a voter, my position is simple. Sarah, you don’t have to be available. But if you aren’t, neither you nor John gets even a chance at my vote.
Clear enough?
LetsGetReal: I understand you concern. But rememeber, this debate means absolutely nothing, unless Biden makes a big mistake. Nothing.
Everyone will vote for the top of the ticket. If Palin screws up, it will be due to sexism, gotcha questions, racism, or moosism. If she does well, the Dems will spin it that she has a history of doing well and the Repubs must have finally let Palin be Palin. But she will still have to run scared from true media questioning with followups. She really can’t win. She can hardly lose. Biden, as I said, only loses if says something really stupid…and even then it’s just good ole Joe.
This is truly about Obama and McCain. Palin is only the proof of McCains judgement, staring him in the face in the media every single damn day.
That’s gotta hurt.
French fries don’t come from France! The French don’t eat anything like that. “Pomme frittes” are sliced in the round or in wedges, not in strips.
French fries are really Belgian fries. In Europe, the Belgians are famous for them (the Dutch make lots of jokes about Belgians and their fries, like, what is a Belgian TV antenna? a couple of fries on the roof).
During World War I, American soldiers encountered Belgian fries but were unclear about their geographic location. The people who served them spoke French, so when the Americans brought them back to the U.S., they called them French fries.
Peggno,
thanks for posting the link. I do NOT think he was kidding. I see no glint of humor.
Molly’s Mom – Sorry. I know it was nauseating. Joe Six-pack?
If the woman had any clue what most americans are/have been facing – she claims they lost $20K from their 401(k). Big whoop. Yet, people all over America have lost homes, entire savings, jobs, families,…everything!
Owning a plane in Ak is fairly common, but I think it said they have 4 boats, (2 big ones and 2 little ones). The house is worth $500K and she owns land worth another $300K.
Then, they have stocks, bonds, and the 401(k)s.
Yup, just like me! Imagine that.
I say, don’t even HAVE a moderator. Put the questions on the teleprompter.
She CAN’T READ!
(Think about it – she can’t name a newspaper, needs them to write “new-clear” on the teleprompter for pronunciation of ‘nuclear’, hasn’t a clue about geography, and has been using the word ‘mock’ ad nauseum since Couric added it to her vocabulary….)
So while we’re all killing ourselves watching her try to not read out loud , tattoo’d lips-a’quivering, she’ll get confused between the words in her noggin and the answers their pouring through her wire (transmitter lodged in her beehive somewhere).
Then the Pugs can’t complain about the moderator at all.
Does anyone know how many people have signed the petition so far?

_________
Don’t know where you ate, but I lived there for two years and steak and ‘frites; (one ‘t’ only) have skinny little, delicious ‘french fries’ – very much like the Mcdonalds fries we have here. And yes, they did come from France in the mid 1800’s
Mudpuppies,
SO HOW DID IT GO?
I was with you in spirit even if though my body wasn’t able to attend. How did lunch go today? Inquiring minds want to know!
Raingods,
1:00 in AK
2:00 on west coast
5:00 on east coast

“Governor, could you please rephrase your answer and this time could you say it in a way that just one person in this room could have a clue what your are trying to say? Because, seriously, Governor, we saw your lips moving but all anyone heard was blah-blah-blah-blah-blah.”
OMG that made me laugh SO hard….
@Let’s Get real
“No it is not fair, but they are going to start playing the race card again. Chris Matthews said on his show, that the McCain campaign need to start throwing the dirt to get back in this race, as it is their only chance of getting back in to the race.”
Two thoughts: IF the republicans did this- wouldn’t it show them up for being out and out RACISTS??
Doesn’t this disrespect Ifil who IS a true moderate…?
Having said that- I **LIKE** the idea of a last minute change in moderator as I am sure SP has practiced on the kinds of questions Ifil has asked in the past… it might throw her off…
And WW I was about 70 years after they first appeared on the streets of Paris, so I would think they ‘traveled’ all the way to Belgium in that lengthy space of time. Whether some soldiers bought some from some Belgians 70 years later doesn not change where they were first introduced. I first had spaghetti in Seattle, but now know that it came originally from Italy.
Shove Maggot – they put vinegar on fries here in central pennsyltucky. did you know that vinegar is very good for the skin? I hear the amish sometimes serve up a nice helping of road apple pie to accompany those fries that are served with vinegar. Perhaps I ought to order some for Sarah the next time she comes west of yinzers?

Methodist Summer Bible School Day Camp
—-
Just catching up after a day trying to do work. LOL Hamlets. What state did you go to Methodist Camp in? I actually went to week-long overnight Methodist camps in Ohio and southern Illinois! Enjoyed your Lana Lada memories! I had a crush on a cook.
—————————————
The “Day Camp” was right down the neighborhood street here in very ethnically mixed W.PA, Bec! Lots of local neighborhood Methodist Churches still here today too! That post this afternoon really brought back memories. That is probably the only thing I agree with Freud about: that little boys start to notice things far earlier than anyone thinks. Far, far earlier. All i can remember now is that Lana Lada had blond hair and she wore stunning white shorts. She wore these most marvelous white shorts that turned up on the edge across her thighs with a little cuff like how guys rolled up the short sleeves on their shirts in that decade. Even with Ike and Mamie in the White House, my boyish eyes still followed that white cuff around the perfect tan of her thighs. Most impressive! I also remember that the Methodists had that very “Aryan Jesus” look in their posters at Bible School Day Camp. It was the same kind of “Aryan G.I.” look I saw well into the next decade when I went through basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky in the Armed Forces of the United States. In this poster it was the same “Aryan Jesus” face on the G.I. in a kind of “Government Issue” Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post detail. The Aryan G.I. held the American Flag out flat in his hands. A shaft of light shone down on it like Washington at Valley Forge. The Poster said “I will trust in my God and the United States of America.” I have never forgotten it. Things did not work out too well for the United States of American in that decade either. So I guess God was tending to other, more pressing, issues. Plus there were no Lana Lada’s at Ft. Knox to provide solace for my eyes. Only guys everywhere learning how to be soldiers. I wonder whatever happened to Lana Lada? I wonder how it turned out for her? An eight year age difference wouldn’t be so much of an age barrier now would it? It could all be quite legal. I always think of her whenever I see the swimming pool scene in the wonderful film “Sandlot”!
@Let’sGetReal– “Chris Matthews says the McCain campaign needs to start throwing dirt to get back into the race…” Staggers the mind to imagine what that might look like as opposed to what they’ve been doing so far.
Re. the petition and the plane crash at 8th and Orca. Did this terrible accident affect the delivery of the petition?
Wow. Wish I had time to follow every link, but I am TIRED . I think I will go to bed and most likely dream of French fries, in every possible shape and flavor…
Just want to apologize to everyone, especially AKM, who probably had a very long day, what with the Anchorage plane crash, for having hijacked the thread into “fries territory”. Although I must say that most of the suggestions have made it onto my 6-12 month “what the heck, let’s try that with our fries” menu.
sauerkraut aka Burnt Toast Paline: I knew that vinegar was good for hair, will have to test it on middle-age acne. I will NOT be trying fries & gravy with road apple pie, however. Not even moose road apples.
Must go beddy-byes.
Thanks for your fun tonight!
Oh dear. Didn’t mean to set off the fries bomb… But isn’t that better than dreaming of SWWNBN?

If you read no other post today, the above link is a MUST READ. It is very long, but imperative that everyone read it and pass it around.
i’d have given anything for any kind of fries to erase the memory of the palin dream i had this afternoon.
all i wanted was a bit of a nap before attaching myself to my computer for the mudflats blogfest tonight.
yikes
WOW Palin is a Million Dollar Mom!!! Just like me………….NOT!
I wish SP were blonde so I could dedicate the Julie Brown song “Cause I’m a Blonde Yeah Yeah Yeah!” to her.
Too bad she also couldn’t think of any other Supreme Court Ruling she disagreed with BESIDES Roe vs. Wade:( Really Katie, couldn’t you just slip her the questions under the door so she won’t have that moose in the headlights stare…followed by a jumble and mix-match of buzz words that say absolutely nothing? To be absolutely fair though I don’t have much interest in any other rulings besides that one. At the moment.
I’m looking forward to the debate however I don’t think it will drive voters one way or the other. They’ve pretty much made of their minds (I know I have) so it’s more or less to reach the undecideds. As well as (please please please) have SP show up for a game of checkers only to find out it’s a chess match. All Biden can do is kill her with kindness and give her a couple of back at ya’s!!! That is if he’s even allowed to have interactive dialog with her.
Sorry we killed the new site ~ love you to pieces!
If there is anything that gets me pumped up to go out and register people to vote and donate to the Obama/Biden Campaign, is seeing Sarah Plain’s face on TV. Everytime I look at this woman, and hear her talk….I GET MAD!!!
I know I’m late to the French Fry party but … does anyone else dip fries in their chocolate shake? Before you laugh … try it. The combo has 2 of the 4 basic food groups — chocolate and fat with a side of salt.
Thanks for the update on the petition. For all of you who may have gotten the email from Linda Kellen with links to email the AK legislators…please take a moment to tell them to release the Branchflower report. I did and actually got a response… from AK Representative David Guttenberg who said he will vote to release it on schedule.
It just goes to show you … there is at least one Alaskan who listens !
Thank you, England for the link to the Rolling Stone article about McCain.
They did a very good job. That is the McCain I have watched my whole adult life. Not a very nice man.
VP:
I’ve been to France many times, traveled to all corners of the country, and have never come across McDonald’s style “frites” except at McDonalds! (I do tend to eat at strictly traditional restaurants there.) So far as I know, the traditional frites are much chunkier— closer to our “steak fries” (and are often served with steak).
My guess is that the narrow style is a fairly recent import from the U.S. thanks to American tourists and the influence of American fast food joints.
In is certainly true that the Belgians, not the French, are known for fries in Europe– usually a slight to their cuisine when mentioned. McDonald’s-style fries are pretty much a horror elsewhere, so far as I know. They even laugh at them in the Netherlands, where the traditional cuisine is worse than the British.
Fried potatoes have been around since potatoes of course, and they come from South America originally.
This is Wikipedia on the origin of French fries. My guess is that the name is a confusion between Belgian and French cuisines on the part of Americans, whether or not this happened during World War I or earlier. Probably they were imported more than once in different forms. The French definitely do NOT take credit for them, as this entry indicates! (Sorry for the obsessive argument, but the French are HORRIFIED at the idea that they have anything to do with American fast food…)
Belgium
Belgians claim that “French” fries are in fact Belgian, but definitive evidence for the origin is difficult to present. Belgian historian Jo Gerard recounts that potatoes were already fried in 1680 in the Spanish Netherlands, in the area of “the Meuse valley between Dinant and Liège, Belgium. The poor inhabitants of this region allegedly had the custom of accompanying their meals with small fried fish, but when the river was frozen and they were unable to fish, they cut potatoes lengthwise and fried them in oil to accompany their meals.”[11][12][13]
The Dutch concur with a Southern Netherlandish or Belgian origin when referring to Vlaamse frieten (’Flemish fries’). In 1857, the newspaper Courrier de Verviers devotes an article to Fritz (assumed pun with ‘frites’), a Belgian entrepreneur selling French fries at fairs, calling them “le roi des pommes de terre frites” (The king of fried potatoes). In 1862, a stall selling French fried potatoes (see frietkot) called “Max en Fritz” was established near Het Steen in Antwerp.[14][12]
A Belgian legend claims that the term “French” was introduced when British or American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them “French”, as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.[12] But the term “French fried potatoes” had been in use in America long before the Great War.[citation needed]
Whether or not Belgians invented them, “frites” became the national snack and a substantial part of both national dishes — making the Belgians their largest per capita consumers[citation needed] in Europe, and their “symbolic” creators.
[edit] France
Many Americans attribute the dish to France — although in France they are almost exclusively thought of as Belgian — and offer as evidence a notation by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. “Pommes de terre frites à cru, en petites tranches” (”Potatoes deep-fried while raw, in small cuttings”) are noted in a manuscript in Thomas Jefferson’s hand (circa 1801-1809) and the recipe almost certainly comes from his French chef, Honoré Julien.[4]Hess, Karen (2005), “The Origin of French Fries”, PPC (Petits Propos Culinaires), journal of food studies and food history (3×/year by Prospect Books, Devon) (68): p. 39, It is worth noting, though, that France had recently annexed what is now Belgium, and would retain control over it until the Congress of Vienna of 1815 brought it under Dutch control.[15] In addition, from 1813[16] on, recipes for what can be described as French fries, occur in popular American cookbooks. By the late 1850s, one of these mentions the term “French fried potatoes”.[17]
Recipes for fried potatoes (not clearly specified how) in French cookbooks date back at least to Menon’s Les soupers de la cour (1755). It is true that eating potatoes was promoted in France by Parmentier, but he did not mention fried potatoes in particular. And the name of the dish in languages other than English does not refer to France; in French, they are simply called “pommes de terres frites” or, more commonly, simply “pommes frites” or ‘frites’.
