I Forgive the New Yorker.

30 09 2008

OK…I was really peeved at the New Yorker after that horrible cover of Barack and Michelle Obama doing the “terrorist fist bump” by the warmth of a burning flag, and a portrait of Osama bin Laden. This was supposed to be how “uneducated people” felt about Obama…you know…satire…hahaha.

When you have to tell people it’s supposed to be funny, it isn’t.

I’ve been harboring a grudge since July.

Then, a few weeks ago, they linked to Mudflats. That softened me up a little, I admit.

Now, I’m calling it even. It feels good to forgive.

I wonder if the New Yorker is in that “pile of stuff in front of her” that she reads everyday (Katie…)😀

God, this woman is a disaster! I just told my wife that if (and when, God willing) she and Mac lose the election, she might as well move to Nebraska…cause you guys ain’t throwin’ a nice welcome home party, are ya? LOL!

The only thing that will save my sanity in the (increasingly) unlikely event that Palin achieves high office is that the richness of art and written and video parody will be UNPARALLELED IN HUMAN HISTORY.

The sad thing is that The New Yorker cover exaggerates the closeness of Alaska to Russia, let alone from her “Window to the World in Wasilla”
Thursday should be interesting! I can only imagine the leash being collared on Biden, he must be itching to thump her but must let her self destruct!

Isn’t The New Yorker one of those magazines Sarah Palin read when she was developing her worldview ? Oh, yeah, she couldn’t name a single book, newspaper or magazine that helped feed her zeitgeist ? Wouldn’t be half as sad/funny if her degree ( 6 schools in 5 yrs or was it 5 schools in 6 yrs ?) wasn’t in Journalism !!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgggh.

So, not to change the subject, but did anyone see the news from Uncle Ted’s trial today?

“A longtime friend of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens crossed the powerful lawmaker Tuesday and testified that he gave the Republican senator thousands of dollars in gifts.

The fiercely loyal Stevens gave no indication he even saw former fishing and drinking buddy Bill Allen enter the courtroom, and the two men barely looked at each other as Allen testified about the expensive gifts he gave Stevens during their 26-year friendship.”

from an AP story I found on Google News

Senator Stevens is getting his very own Denial of Service message…

So glad you can still be reached through the old site. I hadn’t deleted my favorite, or I would still be going around in circles, wondering what happened, and how I’d ever get to sleep without my mudflat nightcap.

Todays SP and McNut new clips have all just once again confirmed why I’m so much a supporter of Obama/Biden.

I really had to laugh as I was thinking about helping my grand kid with her first (freshman year of college) speech and wondering if we should go down by the creek to get into the mood? Mmmm, maybe not. she has to give her speech in front of people not critters.

Speculation that the problem with the new site was intentional. Coincidentally, apparently mclame’s got a new palintruthfiles or some such crap on his site to counter all of the evil things being written about her in blogs & msm. I don’t think my stomach could handle reading that. Anyway, here’s a link that someone on the disaster relief thread posted regarding the error received when attempting to access the new mudflats:

Heh. Looking back, this “narrow maritime border” business looks like the first of what’s become a pattern — the apparently inability to just fob off basic questions with plausible sounding responses. Like the newspaper one today. All she had to do was chuck out the names of a couple of fishing treaties or health programmes they collaborate on with Canada or whatever. Maybe its not high level diplomacy but it’s something and … question over and done with. Nothing groundbreaking but nothing actually mockable really either. Instead? I can see Russia from some random bit of Alaska. People keep talking about her great political instincts if only she was allowed to show them. What political instincts???

If she starts up with at the debate I hope Biden says “I can see New Jersey from Delaware, but I ain’t no Frank Sinatra.”

Ok, so what SP reads to stay current on world affairs seems like a pretty simple question, right? Couldn’t she even have said one news paper, mag, or book. I mean “Parents Mag” “The AK Herald” or “SnowmobleRag”, would have at least made us go look them up to see what she is reading.

Her answer, “whatever they put in front of me,” kind of sounded like “give me a break, I’ll check with my people and get back to ya.”

Ooops, that was yesterdays, pushback.

Well, one thing we know for sure it wasn’t the New Yorker, but now she can see the Whitehouse from the back of McGramps back yard.

A couple of McCain interviews from today with the DesMoines Register. He is very surly. He says that Palin is qualified to be VP because she was among other things a PTA member. He gets really nasty when the editorial boards asks him about detouring from the truth on the Straight Talk Express.

It’s just so stupid. At that one town hall, she invited them to play “Stump the Candidate” – but it’s just TOO EASY. All she had to do was pretend to have read an ‘elite liberal’ rag like the Wall Street Journal, NY Times, or ANYTHING. Just make one up and it’s question over. But not being able to come up with a single name just continues to reinforce the doubts and encourage the journalists to keep digging.

Politics aside, you gotta wonder how these people manage to deny what’s there in videos and transcripts and meeting minutes and emails and – everywhere! – and keep a straight face doing so, and demand that we believe what they’re telling us now and honestly expect us to accept their claim that their own words are smeary opposition propaganda. How in the world do they sleep at night? How can they look anybody in the face at all anymore? It boggles the mind… well, mine anyway. Jeez.

It finally dawned on me, even though she comes from one of the most mountainous states in the union, SP is a flatlander. She still sees the world as flat. With that view in her head, she tried to get Katie to see the world like she sees it, with Russia just over there.

She is also very good at the interview shuffle, never mind the question you are asked, say what you want people to hear. And even you they don’t hear you say what you thought you said right, be sure to make it clear that it’s the interviewers fault that she pressured you and step on your toes first, so you naturally stumbled.

I’m not sure I’ll ever totally forgive the New Yorker for that Obama cover – in fact, I think I can promise that I never will.

But it’s ironic that her picture is on the front of a magazine that she will never read. She certainly didn’t think of the name when Katie Couric asked her what publications she liked to read.

I had a subscription to Newsweek when I was 16 years old. Palin could have just tossed off the names of some magazines and newspapers, or said that she scanned Google News when she wasn’t busy raising all her kids. People would have liked that answer, but what she gave was a truly stupid answer that is baffling.

Check out this CNN story regarding Little Diomede, AK. As many people are aware by now, the island is the closest point of AK to Russia & Gary Tuchman of CNN did an interesting story from there.
For those of you who are not AK residents or who are but have never been to a village, please be forewarned, there is a garbage dumping scene in the Bering Sea that is disturbing.
As an AK resident it is also dismaying. We are a wealthy state & yet many villages still do not even have the most basic services. It is no wonder that TB & hepititus rates are so high in the villages.
Since the newest Palin spin is touting her position as CEO of AK (responding no doubt to Fiorina’s comment), the MSM should be asking her about the very serious problems AK faces & at the same time, ask her why it makes sense to give everyone an “energy resource rebate” when there are more pressing needs in our state.

OK, my “elitism” is about to rear it’s head, but don’t most households subscribe to Time and/or Newsweek? (We get Newsweek) We also get the local paper and several other monthly magazines. That was an easy BS question…even if she didn’t actually READ the magazines, she could say she tries to…

I doubt this daughter of a teacher was never exposed to books or magazines, and her degree is in journalism, right? I am stunned that she doesn’t get at least one weekly news magazine…and I suspect she doesn’t, since she couldn’t name one.

Does she have handlers in Alaska who spoon feed her everything?

Pat-
I think SP can afford a subscription to a weekly news magazine. She just doesn’t care to, which baffles me. Yes, news is available on TV and the internet, but there are features available in magazines that aren’t available online.
I also understand that people can’t afford subscriptions, but as you said, people who are curious about the world don’t let the lack of money stop them from learning more about it. SP seems to just…lack…that curiosity. That scares me, because she NEEDS to be curious and have the knowledge of the world (as well as other world views) in order to run our country. She really needed it to run AK as well, I would think, but I think the US is sick of dumb, ethnocentric leaders.

1 10 2008

only dumb people got excited over the obama new yorker cover. the amazing thing, however, is that the interest was concentrated on the extremes of the “dumb spectrum.”
on one extreme you had people who are so dumb that they fail to grasp even the most basic forms of pattern recognition, let alone satire, and were wowed that an elitist gotham rag extolled their views.
on the other extreme, you had a long-suffering group of offendonauts who are so blinded by their spectacular sensitivity to all non-issues, great and small, that all humor has leaked from the gaskets where steam blows out every time they hear a bad word. humor, as we all know, is a basic and instantly recognizable trait of intelligence. lack thereof, is a certain sign of dumb.

The fact that she reads what they put in front of her seems like she’s getting articles fed to her, not sourced, and she doesn’t care to check the source! I think she would be better off as a kindergarten teacher than as a politician..she kinda has this personality and does these antics with her hands and fingers that would amuse young children.

I think I’m beginning to forgive Katie Couric for earlier transgresssions (censorship, vapidity, etc.). She’s certainly trying for redemption with the Palin interviews!

As a longtime New Yorker subscriber, I’ll submit that they often get too “inside” for their own good. That smugness is what led them to allow the cover that they, on the inside, “got”, but that the vast majority didn’t. And it got altogether too much ink, and in bad places. I wrote a steaming letter, threatened to cancel, etc., etc. Realized the damage was done and they wouldn’t care, and waited to see what happened. Palin cover is indeterminate. Could be stronger. Tiptoeing.

I’ve been a reader but thought I’d make a comment…
How has she been able to listen to Biden since she was in the 2nd grade when everything I read says they didn’t watch TV. I’m much older than she is and we watched TV and I don’t remember listening to Biden.

I also have a couple of questions. Is your WalMart different than the ones we have in Indiana? I heard about the amount of money some of her clothes cost and we don’t have anything like that at our WalMart and she says she’s a WalMart shopper.

Is it really expensive to heat a home in Alaska. I read that in some parts of rural Alaska it can cost $2000 a month to heat a home. I guess I’m naive but I thought it would be cheaper there.

Actually, I am still angry about that New Yorker cover. I just spoke to a neighbor, an elderly woman, who said “The New Yorker was right”, and who believes the Obamas have links to Islam and terrorism. I am not sure I managed to convince her otherwise, though I’ll try again.

Joking about someone’s ignorance can be cruel; playing with anti-Black, anti-Islam and anti-Arab stereotypes is actually harmful. There is still a lot of prejudice in this country, and that cover tapped right into it.
