Well, our new server is down again.  So, until the ship rights itself, we can hang out here.  Sorry to all for the inconvenience.

HI All,

Thanks AKM – I’m sure it is frustrating. Still think my theory of a Todd Palin sabotage could be viable. He has all that time on his hands in those hotel rooms with nothing else to do. — Unless he has been homeschooling all the kids.

The new Kouric walking interview with Sayrah is delicious!

I had no idea I was so well read. Better than a candidate for VP of the US!

Unbelievable.

I hope she is ruined for her presumption.

I’m watching KO — discussing McCain. He really has gone off the deep end. The poor guy just doesn’t seem to realize that everything he says is on tape – and on YouTube instantly. Now he is denying that he ever criticized Obama about the bailout? Gee — I’ve seen that tape already 5 times – AND I watched live at his Ohio rally (had to mute when Palin was talking. Catch take it)

I just saw the video🙂 she couldn’t name one magazine or news paper she reads.. she just loved the word microcosm there btw ..be prepared to hear it in debate because she must be learning these new words to throw in debate.

Who wanna bet that microcosm comes up in debate atleast once if not more?

No, she reads ALL the magazines and newspapers! Everything that comes her way.

LOL Gravel — I think she wanted so badly to tell Katie that she read everything in People Magazine – but she knew she couldn’t say that. She actually sounded a little more intelligent – for part of it – until they got to that part.

Someone else already figured out that Biden wasn’t in the senate when she was in 2nd grade. And Katie got her on the irony of the age joke.

Tell me more about Todd. Short of the few things mentioned in the media, there’s little said about him. I wonder how he can be absent from home for long stretches (working on the slope?) and train for and run races and raise the kids when he’s not absent from home and support/protect/work for his wife (to include sitting in on political meetings)… I’m sure he attends those hockey games too, and hunts and fishes and flies his plane and whatnot. I’m not assuming that it’s impossible, but what of all these things gets the back seat? What are his priorities?

And I’m also wondering how the family would juggle “home in Alaska” and a vice presidency ‘not’ in Alaska. Some reports mentioned Palin’s spotty attendance in Juneau along with that tidbit about her claiming per diem for living at home instead of that nice governor’s mansion the state provides for her and her family. If she were to become vice president, would she still insist on spending most of her time in Wasilla? What would happen to Mr. Vice President’s ideas of how he wants to spend his time? Questions, questions.

My stomach did one of those anxious/paranoid flips too when I couldn’t get to the site. In the last month, I’ve come to really count on this blog to help me get reasonable and steady information. Keep up the great work. There are so many people out here that sleep better at night knowing that you’re helping us stay at least a little on top of things.

30 09 2008
Mollys Mum

Oh, thank God I found you! I too was getting paranoid about Palin sabotage, or the evil McCain camp loading down those lovely yellow boots with concrete, forever to disappear in the swamps of ANWR…

(Obviously I have lived way too close to the NJ Meadowlands and the final resting place of Jimmy Hoffa for way too long. Blush.)

At least I can sleep tonight now. After I have foraged my way through the vast array of news media–or is it mediums?– I keep by my bedside in preparation for my appointment to the Supreme Court.

30 09 2008

Undoubtedly, if Palin actually became VP, McCain would revert to the old model of VP duties, i.e., appearing mostly at the funerals of third world dictators. The rest of the time, no one would really care where she was.

A Suggestion: Sophisticated tech people can help you with this: You can create “mirror” sites of Mudlfats on other servers and set the primary server to automatically handoff the incoming traffic if the traffic exceeds the primary server’s capacity. I know we had an arrangement like this for mission-critical internet communications at the last place I worked.

Did you noticed how pissed off Katie seemed to be at they way Sarah defended herself by saying the people in the lower 48 think Alaska is the backwoods. When I tried to get into the new site, I got a message about a denial of service excessive traffic situation- is this not a deliberate attack on the website then?

If it is a denial of service attack, I guess we know what group is doing it, and the Huff Post or Daily Kos might be interested. Has this been happening to other non-right wing blogs, I wonder.

I haven’t seen the interview, but Palin has brought the point (of Alaska being the backwoods, if not downright backwards) across pretty distinctly before. I’m not an Alaskan, but I’ve lived in the backwoods elsewhere for years and thought, well, how dumb can you be to aim for second place in the nation and do your best to make your origin sound so backwards? Being from Alaska is no drawback in a qualified person’s stepping up, but being backwards sure should.

Since we are a little group here tonight – I have to share the nice thing that happened yesterday. A woman in my area who I’ve involved in environmental work with gave me a call about an upcoming event. I haven’t talked to her in a couple of years. She must be in her late sixties and she said she is now working like crazy on local Dem races.

I had to share about Mudflats and tell her of this lovely place where she could really enjoy the camaraderie. I did not realize that her daughter and family live near Anchorage! So I was all the more excited to tell her about Mudflats. She did confirm that one has to be careful about moose coming up close to the house and they always have a flashlight handy to check, when they open the door at night. Anyway — perhaps her Dem daughter will visit Mudflats and find some long lasting relationships in her area. Perhaps she might participate in a future rally!

I kept rewinding- but finally saw the segment on Keith with Nate from 538. It was great to hear a complete explanation of what his WIN PERCENTAGE post means. Very encouraging.

My favorite recent Palin moment was during the Chris Matthews show on Sunday, when he asked his panel if she would cost Mccain the election. David Brooks said, “No, I don’t think so. I hope not. She’ll rise to the level of mediocrity.” Brilliant!

KO declared Congresswoman Michelle Bachman the worst person in the world because she IS the worst person in the world. Everyone in Minnesota (except those staunch Republicans in her district who voted her in) is deeply embarrassed by her, and even some of them are. She is full of hate and idiocy. Almost as clueless as SP…which doesn’t keep her from opening her mouth. Far from it. Also, she’s the one who gave Bush the nearly full frontal kiss at the state of the Union last year. Gawd! Wesson Scalper Palin

I was worried when I saw The Mudflats was down, especially since Monday night I tried to access the Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator and it was down. But tonight the SPBNG is up and running and I could not be more pleased with my new name (formerly Canuck for Choice).

I forget (sorry!) who wrote last night that they had seen a flock of Canada geese flying overhead and proposed that they might be qualified for the Prime Minister of Canada position. Hilarious! I mentioned this post to friends and people at work and we are all in agreement: Yes, in fact, that would make you qualified enough to run for PM. Our prime minister is a tool of Shrub, anti-choice, pro deregulation, wants to make our awesome health care system privatized. We need someone like you to run our country. Come up here to Niagara Falls and we’ll talk.

So stoked that The Mudflats is sorta up and running. I was worried (have gone to so many links about Palinocchio and Walnuts taken down by the NWO and their minions).

Grad student questions Palin

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/09/30/todd.gop.palin.backlash.cnn

This is a very good video. It has an interview with the fellow who asked her about Pakistan in Philly.
There is a really funny part when Sarah is ordering her cheese steak sandwich, and the girl asks her for what her name is. You can also see some of the people in the crowd do not like Palin.

The interview with the student is very good and something we don’t often get to see.

Watching Larry King. What is Michelle Bachmann ingesting, imbibing, smoking that gives her that perpetual smile. It’s really bothersome because it’s so insincere and inappropriate.

When asked why she didn’t consult Palin re: bailout, Bachmann said she consulted with people in banking. Fair enough. Makes sense. Then why are she and other Republicans demanding answers from Obama? He’s not on any finance or banking committees.

I think Olbermann lost it a little bit tonight. While I’m no Bachmann-defender, I don’t think she was blaming minorities for the economic crisis. I think what she read into the record reflected poorly on Fannie and Freddie. They gave loans to those who couldn’t meet the financial demands of their mortgages.

Let me just add my voice to those lamenting the temporary loss of our new home. Talk about the DTs! It’s a good thing we’ve still got this place! Thank you AKM for not closing this. Don’t know what I’d do without your site and all the fantastic comments.

If some group is attempting to silence us, they’re going to have to come up with something better. The Internet is too big. I think it’s bigger than the space between Palin’s ears.

Bet that Palin is going to suggest that she has as much, or more, experience than Obama. Biden should counter that Obama has been in public office for 16 years, that he has been vetted by the American people, that he has dealt with issues of national security, and been grilled on foreign and domestic policy for 20 months now, and was chosen by more than 18 million people to be the nominee. Biden should add: “Governor Palin was chosen by one person, impulsively, and has not had a single press conference where she could be asked followup questions.”

I’m just catching up on Daily Kos and the issue of Tom Brokaw and his bias for moderating the Oct. 7 presidential debate. I was not up on this, but did see some discussion of him over on New Mudflats in the last 24. I like Tom, and he was brought in out of retirement to take over when Tim Russert died. But his famous book was all abut vets and if he is going to show this bias – as voiced as a concern in this article – then I am concerned. He undoubtedly had a hand in Chris Matthews and Keith O being taken off the election night coverage. KO is clearly biased against McCain. And Matthews – you can’t quite tell. So maybe they don’t belong on that coverage. But a debate is vital for evenhandedness!

Oh, my. Being a child of children of the Great Depression, I watched my parents wash and reuse tinfoil. I got some BBQ Ribs from Artz Rib House to go last night wrapped in really heavy duty foil, and I washed and dried this really big sheet of foil and dried it. As I folded it and put it away, I thought to myself, “Why are you saving this?” And the answer is always, “Because you might need it.”

I just watched a show on The History Channel called History’s Mysteries, and it was about “Alaska’s Bermuda Triangle”. As this story develops, part of it is about the disappearance of a Cessna 310 flying from Anchorage to Juneau on October, 16, 1972. The plane was carrying Congressman Hale Boggs of Louisiana and Congressman Nick Begich of Alaska, along with Begich’s aide Russell Brown, and the pilot, Don Jonz. Nick Begich, father of Mark Begich, current Anchorage mayor and candidate for US Senate had defeated Frank Murkowski for the at-large house seat, and was running for re-election against Don Young. Begich won (56-44) even while missing. In a special election called after Begich was declared dead, Don Young was elected.

The tinfoil is calling me and I am fighting it by drinking El Tesoro with a shot glass.

Oooooh, good comment by a conservative (didn’t catch his name) on Larry King. Liked the idea of Palin. Young. Anti-establishment. When did he grow disillusioned? When she opened her mouth! Love it.

Palin’s speech today. She seemed so pleased with herself mocking Biden’s years of experience. That’s when she’s at her strongest. (Note: Not at her best, but strongest.) Sarcastic. Making fun of others. Is that part of family values? It’s surely not a Christian way to behave.

May she fall on her face on Thursday. Hard. May she smear her lipstick. (That, of course, would be the pit bull with lipstick’s ultimate horror.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question that I hope someone with greater knowledge can answer. As part of the new bailout, there is a proposal that the FDIC will insure accounts up to $250,000. How does that help anyone? Does it solve any part of the crisis? How does that get money flowing? Are you in crisis if you have a quarter of a million in the bank? I must be missing something because I don’t understand those who are touting this addition to the plan.
@mhrt:
Don’t you think it’s kind of nuts NOT to worry in times like these? Tell your husband he is the crazy one!
These are worrying times, the economy & war, and this is shaping up to be a very ugly election. Add in the crazy stuff that COULD happen if mccain/failin get elected and it’s definately something to worry about. For the first time ever I am actually having dreams with political themes. That’s creepy.
I said it on another thread, but I will repeat it here for you (& other parents/grandparents): At our Alaskans for Truth rally the other day I talked to Mrs. Monegan, mother of the “rogue” commissioner. She said that she was there because someone had attacked (verbally) her son, and she was coming out like a lioness protecting her cub. I told her that all of us mothers were there at the rally because we care about our children and the legacy that we are leaving them. I do not want to leave my daughters a state that has had its legislative rights trampled over, with citizens rendered helpless in the face of some old man’s political aspirations & some crazy lady’s feeling that she has been chosen by God to lead this state/country/world/whatever. I do not want to leave my daughters a world that is full of people who loathe everything that America stands for and all that it has become. We have got to take back our country & reclaim our dignity, in big ways and in small.
So, mhrt, welcome to this blog and know that we are a pretty darn supportive group and we have all had our fears and been able to verbalize them here with no fear of scorn. I hope that it will be better for you now that you’re speaking up, do so more often, we love new voices!
There were many smiling faces today after I announced that barring any unforseen problems there will be no more layoffs for the next few months in fact I will be bringing back a dozen people. I liked the comment calling the recent McCain antics McPattie meltdown, that decribes pretty well what seems to be happening. My 88 year old mother washes and folds all of her freezer bags, I just recieved apple sauce dilligently frozen in cottoge cheese cartons some of which have been around since my childhood. I am starting to tighten up on everything I do looking for ways to avoid spending money, I think it’s burn out on this whole economic crisis. Funny though it’s starting to be like gas. I was so angry at the fact there was obvious speculation and the govenment just sat around and played dumb I cut my driving to the bone, planning every trip like I was General Patton going to battle. Thanks for your answer. Yep, definitely a help to small businesses to cover payroll, etc. Additionally, ” Allowing the FDIC to raise the limits would provide more money to banks that they could lend…” (From Forbes article cited below.)
This piece attempts to explain the raise in FDIC limits. Seems to me it’s more about confidence than an actual part of the solution, though confidence is a component.
Keith-o’s clip of the Palin mock-debate-by-the-creek was hilarious. I think I’d better head to bed – even while this party is really starting tonight! But a few final thoughts for the night…
Regarding the debate — I sure hope we don’t have technical difficulties on Thursday because I am soooo looking forward to live blogging that. (And thank you White Sox – your game is in the afternoon!)
I really don’t think Palin is a “stupid” person. She does have some wits about her. She is just pretty darn ignorant of issues that are vital to America. And her cocky, narcissistic attitude and delivery (for such a novice in national politics) is cringe-worthy for those of us who really give a damn about our country and especially others around us.
I do think Palin will manage a few good moves in the debate that will cause her “BASE” to declare she won – no matter how “ill prepared to be a heart-beat away from being the leader of the free world” she will appear to the rest of us.
So what if all she reads in People Magazine (I’m sure of it. She might even read the NE – though that would be tough for her this past week).
The good news is that the “base” seems to be dwindling. fivethirtyeight sets Obama’s win percentage at 82.8%. Given all the factors, he is 5 times more likely to win this election than McCain.
If Obama can just gain a couple more percentage points by election day, and if all of his supporters are allowed to vote, then we will have the satisfaction of not only having Obama as our president, but we’ll know that finally, the nut-case factor in our country is no longer the majority. Yeah!
If this is the case, why have you hired private counsel in the Monegan inquiry? Are attorneys from the McCain/Palin campaign advising the Department of Law as well as Thomas Van Flein?
The subpoenas were responded to. The Attorney General has determined that there are valid challenges to the subpoenas, so he filed a motion to quash the subpoenas in court. Until motions are decided, the employees are not obligated to testify. We hired private counsel to assist us with the legal questions that have arisen in the course of the inquiry and to ensure that Alaskans would not have to foot the bill. McCain-Palin lawyers are not advising the Department of Law, and of course Thomas Van Flein consults with attorneys as he determines is necessary.
My wonderful husband has become a mudflats crusader! Talked to him on the phone tonight about not being able to get my mudflats fix (he is in Canada right now)! He’d tried to get in as well and when he got the DoS message he sent off an email to the Seattle Times (his preferred online news, don’t ask me why, maybe because it has all things related to Seahawks?) telling them about this site and that he thinks it has been attacked by some wacky neo-con group out to stop truth! Told them that they should follow up. Wonder if they’ll take him up on it…
All that from a registered Republican. Mind you, he dropped the idea of voting mclame as soon as scarah was added to the ticket. Thinking people in the oil industry in Alaska know that she is BAD NEWS! Anyway, he says he’s going to stay registered as a Repub so that he can make a statement every time that he votes Democrat instead of for the party candidate…
g’nite everyone!
Did anyone else have problems with MSNBC tonite? Both online and TV. We’re on AT&T u_Verse. The online version is back up, but it was down for a couple hours. TV’s in the other room so don’t know about that. Online was completely down (DNS error message) for a couple hours. Then it redirected to NBC Sports for a while. With The Mudflats down, too, I was really getting paranoid! Seems weird that the Forum was ok but the blog was down…
I’m concerned that your site is getting hit with Denial of Service. Check it out on Wikipedia for a good description of what can cause it.
Well actually this is a relief… I was like an addict that couldn’t get a hit last night.
Previously unconcerned husband just sits shaking his head in disgust.
Father-in-law back from 1 month in Europe[more foreign policy experience/ exposure than SP] and already can’t stand to listen to her.
Off topic—seems the McC camp forgot to look deeply at Gwen Ifill before agreeing to have her moderate the debate. Now, maybe they never watch PBS, or maybe they were just happy to have a woman, don’t know. But Gwen has a book coming out in January about the effect of the Obama campaign on and the emergence of people of color in politics. Book was announce weeks before she was offered up as a possible moderator.
Now McC & SWWNBN are (*sigh*) upset.
Who’s running that campaign? And are they getting paid for it?
They will do anything to sidestep this debate. If Ifill does it, they will just claim bias. Any excuse serves a lying, eratic candidate behind in the polls.
Icy Russia Palin
Not as if Ifill’s book was a secret. Think this is more shenanigans to drive down expectations for Palin? Or to derail the debate entirely?
Somebody said they got in through a Google search link. Didn’t work for me.
Howdy all
well first on a serious note…I just read on democracynow.org…and then looked it up on army times…the the 3rd infantry division ist brigade combact team is being depolyed to the USA…sounds like it is to help with any crisis that we may have, hurricanes, etc…but they also mention crowd control…does anyone else know anything about this…sounds pretty strange to me
now for the fun….Just printed out my bingo card for tomarrow’s debate from mother jones…you have to take a sip (or shot ha ha) everytime a word is said…like bridge to nowhere, shore up…etc. even non drinkers can play, although alcohol would make it more fun, although the hangover would be mighty painful as those are the only key words she knows
during last debate my husband wanted to get the bottle of mescal we have and have us do shots every time mccain said something outrageous…thank God I didnt go along with it…I would still be in bed recovering!
I have to admit, I am still laughing that Palin could not name even one newspaper…..oh mercy mercy…and that she has now called herself Joe Six Pack
