Alaska Lt. Governor Sean Parnell Concedes!

18 09 2008

Alaska Democratic Congressional Candidate Ethan Berkowitz

Lt. Governor Sean Parnell will not seek a recount in the Republican primary for Alaska’s lone seat in the House of Representatives. He conceded to 18-term incumbent Don Young, who is currently under investigation and has spent more than $1 million in legal fees, before he has even been indicted. Young squeaked out a narrow victory with a final vote tally of only 304 more votes than Parnell.

Parnell, who had indicated he would seek a recount, has apparently had a change of heart. He may be banking on a McCain-Palin victory, which would put him snugly in the governor’s chair with a direct line to the White House. At this point, it’s not a bet I would take, but I’m not him.

The concession still strikes me as odd, since the margin of victory was slim enough that the state of Alaska would have picked up the costs of a recount. Maybe he worried that a recount and second loss would sully his image. Palin and Parnell are all about image.

Democrats will sleep a little easier tonight knowing that Democratic challenger Ethan Berkowitz will be the one to face Don Young in November. Parnell would have been a tougher competitor. I can practically hear the champagne corks popping at Berkowitz headquarters.

Despite the much larger Republican turnout at the primaries, many of Parnell’s votes were “anyone but Don Young” votes from Republicans, Independents, and Non-Partisans. Many will either not vote at all, or vote for Berkowitz, simply because the 18-term corrupt, bombastic, blowhard that is Don Young is no longer tolerable.

There were also many Republican ballots selected by Independents, and Non-Partisans who lean Democratic, but voted for Young in a strategic move to keep him in the race so Berkowitz can bring him down like a bag of dirt. In Alaska, Independents and Non-Partisans can choose either the Republican or Democratic ballot. That’s why there are so many of them. Ahhhh…strategery.

Frankly, it’s also going to be a lot more fun to cover a Young-Berkowitz matchup for local media and bloggers.

So join me in a toast (or a donation) to Ethan Berkowitz! >tink< It’s not going to be a cake walk, but he stands a chance of ending an era of corruption in Alaska’s congressional delegation. I’ll bet there are plenty in Washington D.C. popping their own corks right about now.

Palin has been talking about energy today. If McCain is right and she knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the country, we are in big, big trouble.

Sorry this is off message but:

posted today on msn.money.com:

“Dow jumps 410 on hopes for bank rescue plan.

The rally explodes on reports that the government may create a vehicle to take over banks’ bad debt….”

Is this meant to be a joke? The government create a ‘vehicle’? To me this translates to paying taxes to rescue banks, mortage brokers, and homeowners who never should have been given a mortage loan!!

Why is the middle class being punished in order to allow others to skate away from their responsiblities and yet others who can retire with a titanium parachute? As a working RN for 37 years, I don’t have anything even close to a decent pension.

This is past obcene, specially during an election year.

Shocker: Palin Cancels Big California Swing

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was to star at two major California fundraisers and an Orange County rally for 15,000 next week, has canceled her two-day swing through the Golden State, campaign sources said.

HOORAY FOR ETHAN! Frankly, he was the only reason I voted for the last Knowles/Berkowitz gov. ticket against Sarah. I respect Ethan’s good heart and dedication. We are blessed!

Now, we must get both he and Begich to DC. The backlash is going to be UGLIER than can be, either way. Our only hope is Obama in the WH, and a new beginning in our new DEM delegation. Lisa is moderate, and has worked with both of these Dems, and we can maybe keep out head up after this mess created by our Corrupt Bastards Club.

For me a big change in politics would be the newly elected not treating their new positions as an opportunity to cash in. It seems that our tolerance for lying and cheating by those in public office is far too accepting. We are given to believe this is the norm and it seems the ordinary tax paying citizen is not interested unless it effects them directly.

Oh, what fun. Wouldn’t it be fabtabulous if AK sends another Dem to congress. If Sarah keeps going like she has the last couple of days, I can actually see it happening. I knew there were plenty of smart folks up north. She just doesn’t happen to be one of them.

Don Young didn’t campaign hard, being the arrogant wing-nut he is, but I bet he is pleased as punch to have won. How else could he fleece his retrograde, deep-pocket friends for campaign contributions? He needs every penny he can raise for his corruption defense, and his campaign is the perfect cash vacuum. Sweet deal for Don.

Working here on Wall Street (and not a fat cat, mind you, I’ll never have to worry about paying taxes due to high income), hearing the same rumor of a “vehicle” — translated into plain English: Privatize the Profits, Socialize the Losses. You and I, and every other US taxpayer will fund yet more bailouts and corporate welfare. Now I really am Chokin’

I think the Republicans are setting things up for something big to happen – like maybe a withdrawal by Palin or her ouster by the Party.

That October 2 debate date is getting closer, and we seem to be seeing less and less of her highness lately.

I think they are slowly weeding her out, and a replacement is waiting in the wings to step right in.

They know that the worst thing that can possibly happen is for her to debate Biden, and I think they are going to avoid that at all costs.

Question: Is Mark Begich, D running for the Senate, related to the genius Dr. Nick Begich of Alaska who has written extensively about HAARP and what the government really intends to use it for (also son of a Begich who was in U.S. Congress, passenger in Hale Boggs’ plane that went missing)?

Just watched the Greta van Susteren interview of The First Dood. Obviously he still plans to train for and race in the Iron Man even if McCain-Palin win. He CAN’T do that in Washington, D.C. Will U.S. taxpayers wind up footing the bill for these trips back and forth from Wasilla to Washington (just like Alaskans have been paying for the Pailins’ trips and also staying in their own house)?

Do you guys realize that Sarah Palin has told THREE different versions of how she told her kids about the Veep nod, and with Todd’s version that makes FOUR?!! Talk about a pathological liar….

I’d like to see more interviews with and coverage of Sen. Lyda Green and her remarks on Palin — because she is on the mark and is a REPUBLICAN.

Yes, Mark Begich and Dr. Nick Begich are brothers. AKM

I actually think that they pulled out of California because it will be a waste of money and time. I don’t think the coffers are filling up so quickly over in Palin/McCain (yes, I meant to type that) territory. I also think they got wind that California protesters were going to show up in full force if they did show up.

Seriously though, what can we do to get Her to release tax returns and health records? Isn’t there a law on this or something?

The elections sure do create interesting shenanigans.

We really do need voting reform.

Electronic voting with 2 paper receipts, like in a grocery store.
One for the government one for the voter.
Anonymous, unique, electronically readable and readable by sight, and
Electronic readers available to check that the receipt is legit.

And

I’d like to see candidate ranking, (1st choice & 2nd choice …)
which would :
1: avoid run-off elections, and
2: increase confidence that voting for a 3rd party candidate is not’ throwing your vote away’

Okay my $.02

Good luck with your elections in AK !

Sorry this response is so late. This type of ‘vehicle’ is exactly what the gov’t had to do after the Keating Five scandal (remember them?) to bail out the S&Ls that McCain and his senate cronies and lobbyists helped break. His lobbying helped delay gov’t action for two years, which resulted in an implosion. Sound @#$%! familiar???

Sub-Par-nell doesn’t have a chance to be elected Governor as most Alaskans find him to be smarmy and untrustworthy. His decent showing in the primary were more of a reflection against Don Young, NOT votes in favor of Parnell, per se.

A question: will AK want Palin back as Governor when the Dems win, after all the dirt that has been revealed in the VP race? So much for Palin’s pledge for honesty, transparency and ethics….

I’m feeling oh so gossipy today:

RE Lady Rothschild, my high-placed Clinton campaign sources said the only reason she, and another big Hillraiser, were in it was because they wanted an ambassadorship in exchange.

At a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa today, Sarah spoke first (mistaking the name of the town for one in another state). Then as Johnny Mac got up to speak, people started drifting out of the tent. Sorry don’t have a link for that; was a local radio station reporter.

all you folks in favor of open and verifiable elections:

go volunteer as a pollworker in your community. it’s a tough job, the election departments are typically organizational disasters and rarely have enough competent pollworkers. but do it anyway.

by working the front lines, you get to see how voting actually works in your community and have some impact on keeping the system honest.

Wait. Is it possible Parnell has a connection to Troopergate that hasn’t been exposed yet? Do you think he’s hedging his bet that he may be entangled in some investigations this fall that wouldn’t go well with, say campaigning? What would he say? It was either me or that other crook?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Woohoo!
I voted for Don Young – my first republican ballot ever, because I wanted him to face Berkowitz in November. I can’t wait to cast my vote for Ethan. He’s one of the brightest politicians in the state and we need him in Washington.
As for Parnell…what a tool. It looks like he and Talis Colberg (the Attorney General) are angling for the governorship. With the RNC crawling all over Juneau, I really think there is a chance that enough people in this state will become fed-up with Outside interference and turn against McCain.
Quick ! Sarah! Whats the capital of Pakistan?
All I want is for Palin to come home a loser and be held accountable for the shitstorm she has brought down on this state.

Sean Parnell gets caught doing something illegal for the Gov, he gets canned.
Talis Colberg gets convicted of witness tampering and inciting state employees to commit crimes (refusal to testify). He gets the boot/goes to jail.

This is great news about Berkowitz – and it appears people are paying attention! There are new poll results just posted on Talking Points Memo:

AK-At Large Sep 18 Res. 2000 Berkowitz (D) 53%, Young (R) 39%

On another note – ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS in the greater DC area should consider canvassing in Northern Virginia this weekend. Maryland and DC have long been solidly Dem, but Virginia is truly a swing state for the first time in over 40 years and a win here is considered a win overall for Obama!!!
