AK Senator Bill Weilechowski on Ed Schultz Show!

18 09 2008

Tune in now for the Ed Schultz show and his upcoming guest Alaska Senator Bill Weilechowski about the latest in Troopergate.

UPDATE:  He did a good job reviewing where we are.  Ed Schultz picked up on the critical issue to debunk the reasons they give for the stall.  This ethics investigation is bipartisan.  The Legislative Council that voted to proceed with the investigation is made up of 8 Republicans and 4 Democrats.  Palin stated eight times that she would be happy to cooperate with the investigation.  She stated that the discovery that dozens of calls from her administration were placed regarding the trooper, Mike Wooten, was “disturbing.”

Then the nomination, the lawyers, and the full-scale attempt to squelch the investigation while throwing everyone who speaks out under the bus in daily press conferences.

There will be a Judiciary Hearing tomorrow.  More then.

They published 2 photos, the email index, 4 screen shots of emails, 1 screen shot of an email revealing the hack and the new password.

Biden kind of blew it saying paying taxes is patriotic, and SP didn’t waste any time calling him on it a few minutes ago. Why should she talk issues when she can talk spin.

Oh, that’s right, she can’t talk issues.

When did Biden say that paying taxes is patriotic? What was the exact quote and its context?

He is right, actually. But, the Republicans will spin it.

The funny thing is that Republicans don’t seem to understand that taxes are actually necessary for a functioning government and society. A lot of the things they take for granted like police, roads, schools, etc. are paid with, guess what, taxes.

If no one paid taxes, we would have no country.

While watching Oprah she shown how much internet porn on babies and children is running rampant. There is a bill being vote this month called “Protect Our Children Act 2008” Senate Bill 1738 on Sept. 26th! We need to pressure our Senators to pass this bill! Please…if you feel as strongly as I do and want to send a message to your State Senator here’s an easy way to do so….

Go to http://www.oprah.com

Click on the link: Pass The Protect Our Children Act on her page. It will bring you to a page where you can look up your State Senator’s name, email address, and phone number. Oprah even offers a sample letter you can use just fill in the blanks, add your own words but Please call them, email them or write them and be sure to put Bill # 1738 in the subject line!

Again we only have until Sept. 26th! Please pass this to everyone you know!

My point was that Joe could have chosen a better word than patriotic. Better yet, just hit home the point that Obama will cut taxes on 95% of us, and only those in the top 5% will see an increase back to what they paid in the Clinton years.

I thought Biden was speaking about why those making over $250,000 would not get a tax break but shoulder a burden of increased taxes – which under the circumstances of our national debt – was a patriotic thing for them ( those making a lot of money and could ell afford) to do.

18 09 2008

I’ve always used the phrase “civic duty” for paying taxes rather than patriotic. Don’t think that this will gain much in the way of traction for M/P

This is what you get when you draw a national audience – people drawing attention to your typos. Weilechowski looks like a Polish name except for the “ei”. An “ie” ould work well – which is the correct spelling. At least on his website –
http://www.billwielechowski.com/

“Wiele” means many.
The verb “chowac” (that is the infinitive – there is an accent over the second c) means to hide or put away.

So maybe he is Bill “who puts many away”.

Mil,

Like I said in another thread…

Good to see the positive polling, but that in no way means Obama supporters can let their guard down.

My gut told me that McCain would pick Sarah Palin. I was right.

My gut now tells me that this election may be as close as the 2000 election — where it may get decided in the courts.

So continue to donate, continue to canvass, continue to spread the word all the way to Nov 5.

I guarantee you that the Republicans and RNC are going to get real dirty and nasty soon — the swift boat ads haven’t even started yet.

Also, I agree with Ed that there is no way this is some simple “ethics” violation. What I don’t understand is why, when the GOP knew all this about Palin, why didn’t they replace her?

So she is fundraising for the base? So what? She could have still done that. All they had to do was give her a prime speech at the convention.

This Palin pick is such a disaster for the GOP, and all the polls show it.

Gee, paying taxes IS patriotic! If you couldn’t get most people to pay their taxes out of a sense of patriotism, you would never be able to track down all the cheaters.

I’d add that screwing up as badly as Wall Street has been doing is not only unpatriotic, it is highly immoral.

One of the delusions of patriotism these days is that it is not supposed to cost you anything or take any of your time or send your kids into wars unless they volunteer to go. McCain keeps pumping the idea that the most important thing government can do is cut taxes yet he isn’t really asking for anything in return except for people to vote for him.

Biden on taxes-

Anyone making over $250,000…” the host began to question, “Is going to pay more,” Biden interjected. “You got it. It’s time to be patriotic, Kate. It’s time to jump in, it’s time to be part of the deal, it’s time to help get America out of the rut.”

Every gaffe is going to get picked up by the other side and reported by the media. Each candidate does it; it’s part of the game.

Speaking of the media, I just read this article about the ads the candidates are airing. It turns out that the most controversial ones don’t actually get much airtime:

http://www.kentucky.com/518/story/526863.html

So most people only hear these ads when the media reports on them. The campaigns make them just to raise our ire. I think this strategy has backfired on McCain. Now everybody thinks he’s a big liar.

52% say she’s not qualified.

46% say she is.

Wonder what makes people think she’s qualified? Other than she’s old enough. Don’t give me the executive experience crap. She’s been governor for less than 2 years (not “all these years” as she claimed with Charlie Gibson) and most of that time was spent at home claiming her taxpayer funded per diems.

I wish the MSM would spend more time on the rape kit story. Your fellow Alaskan at http://suzieqq.wordpress.com has a few posts on this story and it’s a real pisser. Sarah Palin apparently wanted the raped women to pay for their own rape kits because they included an emergency contraceptive. Gimme a fikken break… what did she expect those women to do, carry the reminder of the rape inside them for 9 months and then have to go thru the agony of L&D? I would hazard a guess that most were thinking…WTF Palin…you and McBush want to tax the middle class…maybe taxing the wealthy a little bit more sounds better to them?

For heavens sake…McCain has said time and time again. His economic policy is top down. Give breaks to the rich and HOPE that the middle class and poor get a little something. Its not rocket science to figure out how that should go over with most Americans. What percentage of americans make over $250,000.00 per year?

Paying taxes is not really a patriotic duty. A better phrase is civic duty. The two are not necessarily mutually inclusive. The two camps need to stop this misuse of various forms of patriotism. There is a lot more involved than such a squiggly word.

I understand the polls are showing that white women over the age of 50, non-college educated, are swinging to McCain by a large margin. No doubt these women (aka “Maxed-out Moms”) will be hurt hardest by a recession. Protesters interrupt Palin and McCain speeches

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CNN) — Sarah Palin’s introduction of John McCain in Cedar Rapids Thursday was noisily interrupted by a small group of anti-war protesters from the University of Iowa, who sparked a back-and-forth of shouting that drowned out at least four minutes of her remarks.

Palin kept speaking throughout the disruption, but her remarks were nearly unintelligible to much of the audience inside the airplane hangar where the rally was held.

About five minutes into Palin’s speech, four female students from the University of Iowa Feminist Majority and Anti-War Alliance held up a cloth banner, and began a loud anti-war chant in the middle of the crowd. An advance staffer tore the banner form their hands and other members of the audience shouted them down with chants of “USA! USA!” and “SARAH! SARAH!”

It was several minutes before the women were escorted from the venue.

I’m going to be bald by the time this thing is over….the Repugs have me pulling hair out on a daily basis. I had enough time when I went home to grab lunch to sit and watch MSNBC for about half an hour and watch the constant dodging of questions. I’m amazed that the media refuses to back these surrogates of McSame’s into corners when they refuse to even acknowledge the questions they are asked. Every single time one of them gets asked about Palin’s experience and foreign policy they simply start on an “Obama has no experience” tangent. They never even acknowledge the question about her. They’d be better off just saying “She has none, we are fine with that, she will learn on the job”. It would stop the incessant questioning.

Then they start hammering on the economy and the McCain surrogate doesn’t once mention one thing that McSame is proposing to do with the economy….he turns it into an experience arguement and reform arguement. They ask again…..he repeats the “Obama wants to raise taxes” line about 3 times and actually has convinced himself he has given an appropriate answer. Geez…..will somebody out there force these morons to answer the damn questions they are asked. Even the Obama supporter they had on today didn’t do a very honest job when poked about the comments by Biden on those making over $250k getting their tax breaks taken away and that paying taxes would be “patriotic”. They guy side stepped that one and there was no need to go to the “well McCain said” route. I wouldn’t have stepped away from Biden’s statement one bit….we asked the middle and lower income families to stimulate the economy by spending after 911….I think they’d appreciate the higher income folks doing some more of the legwork this time around by paying sufficient taxes.

Can we just have the MSM do their job and get these representatives to answer the actual questions they are asked for a change? If the debates start in this direction I may move to Costa Rica before the election even gets here. I’m losing sleep at night over this and the people of this country deserve answers from these candidates and the people that speak for them….not endless rhetoric about the other candidate at every single turn. Just once I’d like to see a Repug senator or rep answer the economy questions without one single reference to Obama raising taxes, 911, terrorists or abortion. Is that possible?

WASHINGTON – Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans.

Ok, now it is in context. And Biden is right. There is nothing patriotic about the uber rich hiding their income in off shore accounts so they don’t have to pay taxes. Truly patriotic wealthy people like Warren Buffet and many of the Hollywood stars who were at the Obama fundraiser realize that they need to contribute to help this country heal it’s wounds. So, they will only take home 9 million next year rather than 10 million. Boy…that’s gotta hurt.

I never understood people that don’t want to pay taxes but brag about how proud they are to be Americans. They want sound infrastructures, wars, bailouts for their pensions, corporations, federal funding for pet programs in their schools and communities, bowling alleys in their tax exempt churches, welfare benefits for their teen daughters and grandchildren, but heaven help them if they pay taxes. Gimmee, gimme, gimme.

I don’t see the Biden comment as a gaffe at all, it just draws attention to the fact that only those making over $250K will see a tax increase. Everyone else will have a tax cut….and the repubs are trying to say everyone will get a tax increase.

The main reason for government officials to use a private email address is to sidestep public disclosure laws. Though the dodge is probably illegal, you have a better chance of just erasing emails off a private account which is not backed up on government servers.

You don’t think that Yahoo has those accounts backed up on their servers. Of course they do. And if they are presented with a court order, they will release them. That’s why she would have been better going with gmail. They fight subpoenas.

But any way you look at it, she was up to something other wise she would not have to hide her e-mails from the government.

It is true that the emails of private accounts are backed up in most cases. However, it takes a court order to get them out of there (as just was happening in the Palin case). Any of you sports fan out there ever watch “Around the Horn”? For those that don’t, it’s a sports talk show in which the host gives out points for good opinions, stats and well thought out arguements on sports topics and subtracts points and even “mutes” the guest when their comments are moronic and unproven stats are given as fact. I think we need such a political show. I can see Matthews having a “mute” button yesterday when the idiot Repug would not answer the question and kept flip flopping all over the place. How enjoyable would it be to watch a Senator or Congressman get muted in mid sentance because they were delivering typical BS spin? Can someone propose this as a show please. They won’t shut up long enough for you to interrupt them so you need a button that actually silences them till the hosts can re-ask the question and try to keep the on message. I’m also in favor of one of these at debates. Take it even a step further and lets put electric dog collars on the candidates for the debates. If asked a question directly about your policy or record and you start to talk about the opponents policy and record….you get a painful zap. I’m pretty sure the Dems are smart enough to avoid getting buzzed and wait for the time they are actually asked about the opponent, but I’m almost positive both McSame and Palin wouldn’t be able to stop themselves from getting a few volts put through them on more than one question.

Actually, he was only copied in about 300 of them. But, that was the magic bullet for the attorneys trying to get their hands on them. JohnW (10:03:26) :The question that I keep waiting to see asked (and I’m not holding my breath) is why would a governor be using Yahoo!’s email for state business?

Because the idiots believe that no one can subpoena the emails and they can keep them hidden. Trouble is, even if they completely destroy the computers the emails were sent from and shred them into itty bitty tiny pieces, copies of the emails are kept on the internet servers of the companies who hosted their email accounts; i.e, AOL has their own servers, Yahoo has their own servers, etc. And these companies will release the emails to a legal request in a criminal investigation. Whenever you sign up for an account, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) will state this in their Privacy Notice.

BTW, I don’t understand all the time wasted on the “Patriotic” vs “Civic Duty” semantics. “Patriotic” implies a choice, while “Civic Duty” implies a requirement, like Jury duty. When Obama was interviewed on O’Reilly, he spelled out the planned extra taxes on $250,000+. It came to a small percentage extra that they (and he included O’Reilly and himself as examples) would be paying. He was able to show that, for someone that wealthy, the extra percentage would barely be noticed but would still equate to an enormous influx of extra revenue.

An excerpt:
“We see that millions of Americans are using the Internet to help each other out, and to improve the way government works. The Obama technology plan encourages civic engagement and openness. Unfortunately, the McCain plan adopts the Bush/Cheney approach, which promotes privileges for big companies at the expense of democracy.” — Craig Newmark

Apparently, the market is the only god to which we should all answer, and corporations are the ‘customers’ of the government. The average person just gets caught in the crosshairs when his neighborhood is polluted, his school funding is gutted, his house is repossessed, etc.

This latest market scandal is the apotheosis of this philosophy and the Grover Norquists of the world are, perhaps secretly, rejoicing in it. Why? Because to the casual eye it demonstrates that the government that has been defunded and the liberal politicians that have been denigrated at least since Reagan (with a brief lull for Clinton) are bad at running things and that government doesn’t deserve to exist. This is why all the wingers hated Bill Clinton so much, he prevented the total takeover of this philosophy. If it weren’t for his administration we’d be in an even worse hole than we are now.

Problem is, it is beginning to affect the pockets of some of the big boys, although money is so internationalized now that those in the know saw this coming to some degree and covered themselves. Meanwhile all of the average investors hope their money market and other rainy day/retirement funds come through all of this. And the sums of money being tossed around? Where is all this coming from? From our children and grandchildren. I am stupefied when I really think about it.

Biden is right…’civic duty,’ ‘patriotic duty,’ whatever the hell you want to call it, that’s the sound of someone who knows that we DO have to have SOME government, otherwise we have no civilization. Good, right-sized, COMPETENT government. Otherwise, we have no way to address climate change. Good government protects our natural resources, protects our schools, protects our communities so we can create the value that creates the darn market in the first place.

The neo-con philosophy is market friendly, not people-friendly, have you noticed? If the people weren’t needed for the market, the GOP (as it presently is) would have found a way to outsource or offshore them, no joke.

McCain and Obama have completely different philosophies on this…John McCain for example wants to privatize health care, he doesn’t want to offer a real solution to the many suffering souls out there. He just wants them to flail around trying to get some health care until they die or until the market takes care of it or until someone makes some money off them. And that is the truth. Have you looked at his ‘plan?’ It is a giveaway to corporations, would be tremendously expensive, it would tax the money employers give to their employees for health care, and then social security is next. They’ll come after that too, and invest that money is derivatives or whatever until the next market bursts on that, too.

What Obama and Biden are saying to me is that what Bill Clinton did worked…he didn’t try to gut and defund the government at every level, he did reasonable things with the budget, and he supported innovation and the business community while still making sure some regulation was in place. Even he gave in to the special interests, but he did a lot of good. I would gladly pay taxes to a reasonable government, not the one that we have in place now. It is an international disgrace, and has been for a long time. The financial mess just brings it home in a way that all levels of society can understand.

I want my kids to live on a planet that is habitable. I want my government to fund good schools, healthy communities, and to have safe, appropriate processes for conducting business. I don’t want them telling me about my medical choices. I don’t want to go into stupid wars. I want to move forward. I want to innovate. I want to cut down my carbon footprint for the good of the planet. If my tax dollars will do that, I will gladly pay them. Government is not the problem, bad government, like we’ve seen since Reagan, is the problem. People need to come before money and ideology, because, at the end of the day, we are all we’ve got to move forward. So we are all a little less consumer-oriented, a little less wealthy. Is that Marxism? Communism? Why do we need all this crap anyway? And why is it so expensive? I am not the sum of my things, I am the sum of what I know and who I know. And if we don’t go this path the planet will do it for us.

John McCain doesn’t convince me, over the past 2 weeks, especially, that he would do much differently then the Bush administration. I also think there is a very good chance that McCain is not going to make it all the way. He is 72 and his health is not good. So then we are left with Palin and the svengalis of the right. Thanks but no thanks.

For me, there is no other choice but Obama/Biden. What I can’t figure out is why can’t aren’t they blowing ’em away in the polls now? Is it slavish GOP brand loyalty or are we just gluttons for punishment, or is our country no longer (if it ever was, as Howard Zinn argues) ‘for the people?’ Palin is part of it but is it Obama’s relative youth and the fact that he is black and there is a lot of underground racism in our country? I just don’t get it.

So I think Biden is right on…we do need to pay taxes, just not to ‘The Wrecking Crew.’

Back to the phones, talking, getting the word out there. I’m not saying Obama/Biden will do everything, there is a lot of work to do to bring this country back. The thing I can tell them is that whatever the outcome of this election, they, we, are not alone. We are not crazy to think of people over profits. We need a new direction, as Obama says, and we will get there.

@plwalsh (11:12:58) :

The problem with the per diems is that if they were ruled improper, Palin would owe taxes on them as additional compensation. There are questions about whether Alaska should have paid Palin to stay in her own house.

I believe it was determined that what she did was legal. Legal, just reprehensible.

Bears repeating:

Make a donation to Planned Parenthood. In Sarah Palin’s name. And here’s the good part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they’ll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. Here’s the

You’ll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send the “in

Amused:

Not sure there has been an actual legal ruling on the per diems, just private opinions expressed. Palin is claiming that they are legal under Alaska law. Not sure that that would necessarily carry over into federal tax law which has quite a lot of detail about what to count as a work expense. It sure seems weird that she would get a big house and an office in Juneau and also per diems for living in Wasilla and working out of Anchorage. You’d think one of those would be compensation.

@plwalsh — I read that under the law they are legal because they were still nights away. As in all things legal, it’s going to be a case of how permissions are written and interpreted. From CNN SP is trying to sell Obama’s ideas…

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CNN) – Sarah Palin likes to tell voters around the country about how she “put the government checkbook online” in Alaska. On Thursday, Palin suggested she would take that same proposal to Washington.

“We’re going to do a few new things also,” she said at a rally in Cedar Rapids. “For instance, as Alaska’s governor, I put the government’s checkbook online so that people can see where their money’s going. We’ll bring that kind of transparency, that responsibility, and accountability back. We’re going to bring that back to D.C.”

There’s just one problem with proposing to put the federal checkbook online – somebody’s already done it. His name is Barack Obama.

a little late to the party but …

redwood man, you apparently have forgotten the rule that a democrat “blows it” when they say ANYTHING.

what planet is this that every word that anyone says must pass the ever changing stink test of the republicans/rightwing/conservatives/msm?

you should be laughing and throwing tomatoes at those who suggest he was saying anything incorrect or “bad” not chastising a democrat because the republicans/rightwing/conservatives/msm found fault.

when was the last time you heard one of them apologize for being a putz? never. there are republicans in congress right now having a hissy fit because a hearing is being held on the subject of “restoring the rule of law.” apparently, like the bad economy, the lawlessness of the bush administration is simply a figment of our imaginations.

biden’s only mistake (and obama’s) is continuing to adhere to the “delicate sensibilities” approach to this campaign. biden and obama need to point out in unequivocal language the fact that the republican party, which includes, front and center, john mccain and george bush, is responsible for the financial mess (etc.) this country is in.

@plwalsh: CNN is describing the financial system as a patient in critical care getting experimental emergency medical treatment that no one has used before. Not very encouraging, really.”

Yes, and everyone (Democrat and Republican) have to be acutely aware that all the programs that are being promoted may not happen because of this train wreck. As any good fiscal manager would do, the first step is to start working oneself out of debt – that means sacrifice. We need a President who has at least a basic understanding of globalization and international currency markets, and can work with world leaders to stabilize the markets.

We need a President who understands how to use diplomacy and has surrounded himself (Sorry, Sarah, even though you like your name at the top of the ticket, it just ain’t so) with strong intellectural and experienced foreign policy advisors. We cannot AFFORD more war. It’s as simple as that. We’re tapped out thanks to Bush and his ill-gotten policies and false fear-mongering.

We need a President who can get the ear of Congress because he is respected and has the voice of the people on his side. We have to be ready to sacrifice because, if we have not already, we are going to be asked.

Just a caution. I’m for Obama but I certainly will not expect miracles. He’s walking into a nightmare of mess thanks to Phil Gramm and others.

[[[Yay, even though I know that the polls mean nothing because of new voters and cell phone users, I’m still chuffed to see that Obama is in the lead again.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_election_mccain_vs_obama-225.html%5D%5D%5D

Can you imagine how far ahead Obama was when the polls showed him 12 points ahead?

A study on the impact on polling results when not including cell phone users showed that, for issues that impacted younger people, it was significant. For instance, when asked if social security changes were important or unimportant, when the polling sampling included younger voters with cell-phone-only phone service the results were 14% more responses for “unimportant.”

It would just be a guess, but I would think that 14% would be a ballpark figure for how far Obama’s polling numbers have been below his actual support numbers since shortly after he started organizing on the internet, which is when his outreach to young voters started sky-rocketing.

FYI The federal income tax on wages is illegal. The constitution clearly says that no one can be taxed on the earnings from their labor. The tax on earnings is legal. In 1916 a bill was brought before congress to enact the federal income tax on wages and it passed but was never ratified which is necessary for a bill to become law. State taxes are legal. If we had a tax system that didn’t have a million loop holes for taxes on capital gains we wouldn’t need a tax on anyones labor. There have been several law suits against the IRS that have been won over this issue. Unfortunately, peoples lives have been ruined while the irs has literally taken their lives apart.
Google “show me the law” and you will find all the information you will ever need.
I will consider it my civic duty to support this federal government when the pentagon no longer looses 18 billion dollars and has no explanation for where that money could have gone. Anyway – the American public has been tricked for all these years into believing that we owe federal income tax. We do not!
