Mudflats Evolves!

16 09 2008

Just a quick note to let you all know that some changes are coming to Mudflats!

Little did I imagine when I started writing my little blog, all alone up here in Alaska, that things would unfold as they have. I remember on the morning that Sarah Palin became McCain’s VP pick, and I tapped out a post about it, wondering if I’d get higher traffic than usual that day. I did.

I’ve been overwhelmed with the response to the blog. The result of the last two and a half weeks has been two and a half million hits, more than 25,000 comments, so much email I can hardly read it, and best of all, a community of intelligent, committed, thoughtful individuals who knock my socks off every day.

It’s become obvious to me that my humble little WordPress blog needs some overhauling to keep pace with this flourishing community. With the help of my amazing tech guru from half a world away, Mudflats is about to become a lot more “user friendly” for all of you. There will be new features, among them discussion forums that will facilitate conversations, and keep it all a bit more organized and easy to follow. In the meantime, I’m going to post an open thread when I pack it up for the day (still gotta sleep!) to relieve some of the comment congestion.

So, thank you all for your incredible outpouring of support, and your commitment to becoming informed and engaged about the issues before us in this incredibly pivotal time in history.

Look for changes hopefully coming within a week!

Thank YOU for all your hard work! I am convinced you are the reason a lot of this information is coming to light for the main public.

Are you also going to add a donation button? =)

Yes, I will. Thanks to all of you who have been so amazingly generous with your offers of support! AKM

Rest up Mudflats…but not for too long. We all need our daily fix! Thanks for all your sleuthing, slugging, scraping through the muck. You have provided a great service and I hope it is not for naught.

Congratulations, Mudflats!!!!! WOO-HOO! I hope when you are rested, you can scoop us in on what is happening up there with Troopergate, and what Palin is hiding.

New from Andrew Sullivan on andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com

“Mown view is that Palin has all but killed the McCain candidacy. And her real advantage was novelty. Once people realize she has no record of even interest in foreign policy and is a serial liar, her unfavorables will continue to rise.”

Well, I certainly hope the changes include a DONATE button. Please make that a priority!

This blog has been a lifesaver, and you, AKM, deserve a Pulitzer for it.

At the very least, you should be on the ticket for VP.

Hell, might as well go for President while you’re at it!!

Well, I DO live pretty close to Russia…. AND I’m totally unqualified. Sign me up!

Good on ya, Mudflats! You’re an inspiration for all of us “little” bloggers who may only get a few hits a day, but who care deeply for what’s going on around us and in our country. I’m delighted for you — and I’m one of the many who’ve put a permanent link up on my blog so more people can find you and read the truth about Palin, and beautiful Alaska, from a good, balanced, and talented writer with both feet firmly on the ground.

May your fingers hold out forever.

I third the request for a donate button. I personally am between jobs and don’t have any extra money at the moment, but I hope I will sometime, and “the laborer is worthy of his hire.” You’re a lot of fun to read, very informative, and somebody ought to be benefiting from Sarah Palin’s nomination who’s one of the good guys.

Congrats…I’ll look forward to the upgrade, hope you save some of the great feature already here, like the great fast links, and the unclutterd look with just the right balance info. Oh, I’ve been saving my lipstick money for you, so keep that donation button right on top, or I’ll never wear lipstick again.

AKM You are truly amazing. What first impressed me about this blog when I stumbled upon it was your ability to voice your opinions and perspective based on facts; no muddying of the waters with things made of rumor and speculation. Sure, those things exist and some have since been proven true but it’s your commitment to the truth; the things we know — and clearly separating them from speculation that I find so admirable.

I hope wonderful things keep on happening for you — you deserve them! So many of us would feel lost if we hadn’t found you — you’re OUR Alaskan pipeline!

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with your blog since I heard about it several weeks ago. I’ve added you to my blog’s list of daily reads and I frequently see people leaving my site heading here for a dose of Alaskan ponderings and ramblings. You’ve done a great job giving us folks in the “lower 48” an inside view into the pitbull with lipstick.

This election has brought out the absolute worst in this country. To some McCain and Palin can do no wrong even though the evidence says otherwise. This country, founded over 200 years ago only afforded black Americans the right to vote when Obama was 4 years old (1965) That is paramount in understanding what this campaign is faced with.

Congratulations on your upcoming new site! But it is we, your readers, that need to THANK YOU, for your commitment to helping to vet this vice-presidential pick of McCain’s that the McCain group did not take the time to vet for themselves.

Especially with Alaska being a very large small town, it took real courage to post that original post. And to continue to post the truth. You are doing good works. Thank you for your timely information and reporting.

Blessings.

The donate button is a great idea, I’d gladly help pay for some of AKM’s expenses to get out there and see what’s happening and come back to us with more rolls of film developed so we can all see for ourselves that there are no lies told here (well, with the exception of the occasional troll that passes through the comments) and AKM finds out the things we all need to know.
Great work, and you deserve every minute of rest you feel you need.

AKMuckraker, I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic’ and ‘different.’

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you’re an American story.

If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, and you’re a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, then you’re well-grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, help register 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, 8 years as a State Senator of a district of 750,000 people, chair the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people, sponsor 131 bills, and serve on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works, and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.

If your resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council
and 6 years as the mayor of a town of 7,000 people, 2 years as governor of a state of 650,000 people, you’re qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, left your ill wife, and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age-appropriate sex education, including the use of birth control, you erode the fiber of American society.

If you staunchly advocate abstinence-only education, while your teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, you don’t represent America’s family values.

If your husband is called ‘First Dude’, has a DWI conviction, didn’t register to vote until 25, and was a member of a group that advocated secession of Alaska from the USA, yours is the quintessential American family.

And, finally, if you’re famous for your quick temper, you’re the one to have your finger on the red nuclear button.

OK, much clearer now.

AKM,

That’s fantastic! I’ve often wondered if you ever sleep or for that matter are you independently wealthy, cause I wondered how do you have time to work and keep us updated at the same time.

Here is some good information about the reality of Alaska’s contribution to the energy needs of the U.S. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/09/palin_on_energy.html

3.5% not 20%. Ninth state in the nation in terms of total contribution.

Palin is just plain wrong–each time she has repeated the assertion. So is it a lie or an exaggeration.

As for a logo for the new blog I agree with Femalady (12:29:45).

Maybe something along the lines of a huge surge of Norman Rockwell style little St. Bernard puppies (Mud Puppies) coming out of the big yellow boots and piling on a knocked down LIP STICKED Pit Bull now on it’s side, tongue hanging out in bewilderment. Not a violent image. Just bewilderment. A kind of Gulliver’s Travels Lilliputians image. You know what I mean. Any Computer Graphic Artists out there want to try this?

I can’t thank you enough for allowing us to form such a community. It’s by far the best discussion I’ve had in months, family and very close kindred souls aside. This site has renewed my faith in my country — that there are still people out there, in big cities and small towns alike, who are paying attention and who think about what they read and watch. I’ve told many people about you and will continue to do so. One thing I ALWAYS stress is the level of intelligent comment and the commitment to truth.

I tried posting this on the previous thread, but it seems I have a tendency to hit “submit” just as AKM is updating…

Read clear to the end, it’s not what it first appears. It’s typical Bush tactics of controlling the audience so you can control the message. Next thing you know, people attending McCain-Palin rallies will have to sign loyalty oaths and pledge not to talk to the media.

Big bow to our lady AK!! I just can’t tell you how much this community has kept my sanity in check for the past 2 weeks. You are doing a great service to our country and to Alaska. These past 2 weeks have been a true gut check time for me. I know now that I will do what I need to do to take our country back. The saying is no longer Yes We Can. The saying is Yes We Must! So, to you AK I give you much thanks for awaking my political side and opening my eyes to what is at stake here. And to ALL my fellow mudpuppies, you to have been an inspiration. You have held me adrift when I was sinking into the stupor of this nightmare. As many before me have said, never have I donated, volunteered, etc. This time I will do what it takes to help Obama win. God Bless All Of You Wonderful Wonderful AK and all you mudpuppies out there.

This is a Must Read….This is one of John McCain Senior Advisor
Pass it on:
On “Fox and Friends” yesterday, Nancy Mitchell Pfotenhauer — a top policy adviser for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — derided those who say that lifting the offshore drilling moratorium won’t affect gas prices, saying it “reveals ignorance on the futures markets.”

That position puts her at odds with the federal Energy Information Administration, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA), McCain economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin, and even McCain himself. Why would Pfotenhauer go so far off message?

Perhaps it’s because the only ones who would benefit from lifting the moratorium are energy companies like Koch Industries (pronounced “coke”), the largest private company in the United States, the secretive backer of the right-wing message machine, and Pfotenhauer’s longtime boss.

Koch Industries Is The Secret Dirty Energy King. With $90 billion in annual sales, Koch Industries is the largest privately owned company in the United States. Begun in 1940 as an oil refining business by Fred Koch, his company — now controlled by sons David and Charles Koch — has diversified into “refining and chemicals; process and pollution control equipment and technologies; minerals and fertilizer; fibers and polymers; commodity and financial trading and services; and forest and consumer products” — a global warming pollution factory. [Forbes, 2007]

Koch Industries Is At The Center Of The Right-Wing Message Machine. Koch’s founder, Fred Koch, also helped found the John Birch Society, an ultraconservative organization that believed the U.S. government was controlled by a traitorous cabal of Communist sympathizers. Koch Industries’ charitable arm, the Koch Family Foundations, has provided over $120 million in the past 20 years to the Cato Institute (founded by Charles Koch), Citizens for a Sound Economy (founded by David Koch, now Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks), the Heritage Foundation, George Mason University, the Federalist Society, the Mercatus Center, and dozens more right-wing, anti-regulatory, and global-warming denial organizations. [Media Transparency]

Nancy Pfotenhauer Is A Pure Right-Wing/Koch Industries Product. Pfotenhauer’s resumé includes George Mason University (funded by Koch), Citizens for a Sound Economy (founded by Koch), Americans for Prosperity (founded by Koch), and the Independent Women’s Forum (funded by Koch). She also worked directly for Koch Industries as their top Washington lobbyist. When not on the Koch payroll, Pfotenhauer worked for the Republican National Committee, Sen. William Armstrong (R-CO), and Dan Quayle’s Council on Competitiveness. [Media Transparency, Dunamis International Ministries]

After graduating with a master’s in economics from George Mason University (funded by Koch) in the late 1980s, Pfotenhauer became the “chief economist” at the Republican National Committee before the age of 24. She then worked for George H.W. Bush’s transition team and Sen. William Armstrong (R-CO), and was then appointed to be “chief economist of the President’s Council on Competitiveness,” Dan Quayle’s secretive anti-environmental project.

During the Clinton years, she rejoined the Koch Industries machine as “executive vice president for policy” of the Koch front group Citizens for a Sound Economy. With her then-husband Daniel Mitchell, a Heritage Foundation economist, she co-hosted the call-in show “Mitchells in the Morning” on National Empowerment Television, run by Heritage Foundation founder Paul Weyrich. From 1996 to 2001, she was the top lobbyist for Koch Industries.

While working for Koch, she divorced Mitchell and married Gordon Smith’s (R-OR)’s chief of staff Kurt Pfotenhauer, now a top mortgage-industry lobbyist. In 2001 she was named president of another Koch front group, the anti-feminist Independent Women’s Forum (IWF). In 2003 she also became president of Americans for Prosperity (originally CSE), until joining the McCain campaign in 2007.

On the IWF/AFP agenda:

* Privatizing social security
* Global warming denial
* Cutting corporate taxes
* Opposing affirmative action
* Opposing Title IX
* Opposing domestic violence laws and equal pay
* Opposing any government regulations of industry
* Opposing global warming regulation

PART 1
I am one of a growing group of people across the nation preparing to hold
national rallies for Obama on Saturday, Oct. 4th at 1pm EST and adjusted accordingly
across the time zones. We’d like the rallies to continue from that point on to every Saturday until
the election. A focus on issues affecting women and families. Home made signs that reflect the
individual’s concerns.

We need someone who can create a web page that would note dates and times and where
people can meet in each town or city. The page would also allow us to coordinate with people
across the country regarding permits and press releases.

If you are interested in getting involved please reply to: berta@brthsearcher.com

PART 2
It’s time for the middle class to stand up and be heard. National rallies will garner
national press coverage. Here’s a link for a rally against Palin in Anchorage that came together within a few short days by simply sending press releases to their local media:

Sophie is right about Nancy Mitchell Pfotenhauer, This Corporate Robot has been all over the Media distorting the Facts against Obama. She is on TV with her phoney smile and flat out lying to the American Public. Why is it that McCain’s advisors are Lobbyist for large Corporations? Americans will sell their soul so their taxes won’t be raised.

The world is eternally in your debt. You have sparked the press to start doing some real coverage important to this election and have proven once again how a few people with a voice can turn into a movement.
I would donate on your ‘button to come” but I just got fired from my job because I have an Obama bumper sticker on my car and an impeach cheney ball cap under my back seat window. And, yes, they can do that!!
So, there you go.
And just a thought – next time someone tells you they are voting republican ask them how the economy is working for them and whether or not they have taken their money out of their bank as some financial experts are suggesting that people do.
PS check out the site crooks and liars – they have all sorts of good things to say about you and keeps track of the republicans lies and tricks.

I am writing from Baltimore, Maryland, to thank you for Mudflats. After Palin was dumped on the national scene, I felt as though the world had lost its mind. Luckily, that first day of searching around the Internet, I found Mudflats. Now not a day passes that I don’t “check in.” I’m happy to hear that others like me turn to your blog for insight, information, and a hearty laugh. You’ve been ahead of the curve on every issue regarding the Palin tragedy. The photos and story about the anti-Palin rally took two days to make the papers in my parts. Keep up the great work. This site has truly renewed my faith in the people of America. I’ve been so frustrated by the degradation in our political discourse, and both parties have a share in the responsibility. Mudflats is a beacon of hope that there are still people who care passionately about the future of this country, who want desperately for it to live up to its ideals, who pay attention, and who demand that the truth be ferreted out and told.

Thank you to AKM and to all who read and post on this site.

The first time I read Mudflats was the Saturday before Labor Day. AKM was on her way out of town for the holiday weekend, and said she would be passing through Wasilla. Upon her return, a gallery of pictures of Wasilla was posted, with that day’s blog. In the text, AKM thanked her husband for his patience in pulling the car over frequently so AKM could take pictures. A few days later, it seems, husband was replaced by spouse. There’s a small chance that I’m incorrect on this, but when people started asking in comments whether AKM was female or male, I remembered what I’d read that day. In my mind, AKM let the cat out of the bag herself, inadvertently.

In the end, it matters not — AKM is just one more woman who cares enough about Alaska and our country to express her views. We are all very fortunate to have found this voice of sanity in this insane time.

Keep up the great work, AKM.

By STEVE QUINN, Associated Press Writer

JUNEAU, Alaska – Five Republican state lawmakers filed suit Tuesday to end the bipartisan investigation into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s firing of the public safety commissioner even though the vice presidential candidate once said she welcomed the probe into allegations of abuse of power.

The lawsuit called the investigation “unlawful, biased, partial and partisan.” None of the lawmakers who filed the suit in Anchorage Superior Court serves on the bipartisan Legislative Council that unanimously approved the investigation.

The scandal known as “Troopergate” gained national attention after Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose Palin as his running mate. Since then, Palin and the McCain campaign have sought to distance Palin from the controversy and have taken actions that could slow its resolution until after the November election.

Palin fired public safety commissioner Walt Monegan in July. Weeks later, it emerged that Palin, her husband, Todd, and several high-level staffers had contacted Monegan about state trooper Mike Wooten, who had gone through a nasty divorce from Palin’s sister before Palin became governor. While Monegan says no one from the administration ever told him directly to fire Wooten, he says their repeated contacts made it clear they wanted Wooten gone.

Palin maintains that she fired Monegan over budget disagreements, not because he wouldn’t dismiss her ex-brother-in-law. Still, she said in July that she’d welcome and cooperate with the investigation ordered by the Legislative Council. “Hold me accountable,” said had said.

McCain campaign spokesman Ed O’Callaghan now calls the investigation “tainted.”

Alaska’s House Speaker, a Republican who voted to authorize the review two months ago, on Tuesday questioning its impartiality.

Rep. John Harris wrote that what “started as a bipartisan and impartial effort is becoming overshadowed by public comments from individuals at both ends of the political spectrum.” His comments were in a letter to the Democratic state Sen. Kim Elton, the committee chairman.

On Tuesday, three state representatives and two state senators sued Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who is overseeing the investigation; Juneau Democratic Sen. Kim Elton, who heads the Legislative Council; independent investigator Steve Branchflower; and the Legislative Council itself.

The lawsuit seeks to either delay the investigation until after the Nov. 4 general election or remove French and Elton.

“There is no nonpartisan reason to complete this investigation until after the election,” said Anchorage attorney Kevin G. Clarkson. “We just want to take the politics out of it and bring fairness back into it.”

Clarkson said he and a nonprofit legal firm in Texas, Liberty Legal Institute, were donating their work on the suit. A phone message for French was not immediately returned.

The Legislative Council, made up of four Democrats and eight Republican, voted unanimously to investigate the circumstances of Monegan’s dismissal. Although Monegan was an at-will employee who could be fired for almost any reason, lawmakers wanted to see whether Palin tried to use her office to settle a personal score with Wooten.

Last week the state Senate Judiciary Committee voted to issue subpoenas for Todd Palin as well as nearly a dozen others and to gain phone records of a top aide to the governor. The subpoenas seek to compel their cooperation in the investigation.

O’Callaghan said Monday that Sarah Palin, who was not subpoenaed, was unlikely to speak to Branchflower and that he didn’t know if Todd Palin would challenge his subpoena. At the same time, the campaign released e-mails it claimed supported Sarah Palin’s assertion that disagreements over budget were behind Monegan’s firing.

Among the e-mails released was a farewell note by Monegan. In it, he suggested the governor had reason to believe she had lost his support, and he urged his former colleagues to communicate better with her.

“For anyone to lead effectively they must have the support of their team, and I had waited too long outside her door for her to believe that I supported her,” he wrote. “Please, choose a different path.”

Palin’s lawyer has sought to have the three-member state Personnel Board take over to investigation, alleging that public statements made by French indicated the probe was politically motivated. French had said the results of the investigation could constitute an “October surprise” for the McCain campaign, and he later apologized.

This is truly a great site. Andrea, congratulations you deserve this success.

About nine years ago I became a Democrat after observing the GOP display it’s disrespect of the American people by doing one thing and saying another. It is the party of the ends justify the means, and secrecy.

McCain is not a war hero, and Sarah is not like any true Christian I have ever known. As a woman she makes me disgusted. The very fact of charging a rape victim for a rape kit.

The GOP candidates are both unqualified on the grounds of ethics, and honor.

I was happy to hear Ed Shultz mention today that you were the best of the Alaskan bloggers AKM and he is so right. Thank you for all your up-to-date factual reports and insight. Your truthful reporting of both rallys in Alaska is just another example how the MSM is being feed lies by McNutJob about Palin.
Like Ed said today, Palin really does have the Alaskan press in her back pocket out of their fear of vendettas and without you, the truth might not have gotten out about Palin. Keep up the good work!!!

AKM – This Mud-puppy’s tail is wagging for you! CONGRATULATIONS!

Like so many others have said before me, THANK YOU for your hard work and honest reporting. You have not only provide us with the facts we need to vet McCain’s VP pick, but also a forum for civil, political discourse. Through this site we have helped us educate each other, sort “fact from fiction”, mobilize, re-energize and take action. This Washington woman is fired up and ready to go!

“I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.” –Thomas Jefferson to William C. Jarvis, 1820.

Speaking of rally’s, wouldn’t it be great to rally the troops at all the Mccain stops asking Mccain why Palin is being kept in a cone of silence? A show of signs and inundating the MSM with one simple question, McCain what are you hiding? Bring Sarah out of the closet and let her answer the questions like all other canidates have done. I have never seen a ploy like this in my whole life and the American people need to stand up before it’s to late. If she has the expeirience then let her show us by being open and answering questions.

ok…I need a shot of reality here about the polls. Real Clear Politics is showing McCain leading in electoral college votes now, but when I look at several of the pollsters map, it makes no sense. They are showing WA as toss up now (I thought WA, would definitely go DEM), also they have changed IO to toss up as well. Even though it shows Colorado as toss up, I really think it will go blue because of our rural communities (water and immigration issues). Oh, has Minnesota also gone to toss up? That is also somewhat surprising. Do they make this stuff up??

Your truth telling blog has kept me so thoroughly informed about the campaign issues that when I talk to other people about this mess, I can actually speak about every issue with confidence…something I have never attempted to do before. Politics was always off limits in conversation…but not any more.
The namby-pamby national news is so boring to me. They take forever to get as far as we have all come here, with you, on this blog.

I, too, have been reading Mudflats since Aug 29…constantly refreshing the site in hopes of reading the newest posts and every comment. I spent so much time in my office reading this that my husband actually complained! Why would McCain appoint some one who is under investigation for ethics violation? Then lie, lie, lie about everything under the sun. Hey guys, I just found this on the Progressive Alaska blog. just as soon as you think there can’t be possibly any more skandels, another one pops up. Ifeel like I am palying that wack-a-mole game.
Monegan seems like a really decent man….

Source: Sex Assault Program Cited in Monegan Firing Targeted Child Abusers
By Zachary Roth – September 16, 2008, 4:58PM

So Sarah Palin’s latest explanation for why she fired Walt Monegan is that he had gone over her head in seeking federal money for an initiative to combat sexual assault crimes, before she had approved the program.

But it now appears that the program in question is one that most elected officials would be wary of admitting they hadn’t strongly backed. According to Peggy Brown, who heads the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Monegan wanted to use the federal money to hire retired troopers and law enforcement officials, and assign them to investigate the most egregious cases of sexual assault — including those against children.

In other words, if Palin’s new story is true, she fired Monegan for being too aggressive in going after child molesters.

ABC News reported yesterday that, although Alaska leads the nation in reported rapes per capita, Palin hasn’t made the issue a priority as governor.

Monegan, however, appeared eager to change that. “He seemed to get the issue and really took it seriously,” Brown told TPMmuckraker.

According to the Palin camp, too seriously.

THIS IS IMPORTANT I would request that evey one here sign up for this event, by my calculation it will cost you less than $10.00
http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/444zy

Buy at least 10 postcards from your state, put $0.27 postage on each

Write a sentence telling why you support Obama and another sentence asking for their support. Example: Dear Fellow Voter, I voted for (or I am voting for) Barack Obama for President because I believe that integrity and character has a place in American politics. He has the type of leadership we need right now. I hope that you will vote for him too. Sincerely, (Sign Your Name) phone, address, and e-mail are optional

Do not date postcards, put them all in an envelope and mail to WFO Post Card Campaign 193 E. Rich Street Columbus, OH 43215

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT WRITE THE DATE ON YOUR POSTCARD. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT MCCAIN/PALIN. The postcards must be appropriate pictures not babies butts, nudity, thongs, or any picture that would offend the voter. Remember, you are representing Barack and his campaign

I am not hosting this even, don’t know the woman doing it

I think it is important to get out the vote in the swing states

McCain on the economy this morning….

“I know how to fix this economy. I have had great experience on these issues as chairman of the Commerce Committee,” he said on Fox’s “Morning Joe.”

On CNBC’s “Squak Box,” he added: “I understand the economy. I was chairman of the Commerce Committee that oversights every part of our economy.”

(snip)

According to its Web site, the Commerce Committee oversees 13 areas, beginning with the Coast Guard, and continuing through “regulation of consumer products and services … except for credit, financial services, and housing” — the very areas now in crisis.”

PART 1
I am one of a growing group of people across the nation preparing to hold
national rallies for Obama on Saturday, Oct. 4th at 1pm EST and adjusted accordingly across the time zones. We’d like the rallies to continue from that point on to every Saturday until the election. A focus on issues affecting women and families. Home made signs that reflect the individual’s concerns.

We need someone who can create a web page that would note dates and times and where people can meet in each town or city. The page would also allow us to coordinate with people across the country regarding permits and press releases.

If you are interested in getting involved please reply to: berta@birthsearcher.com

It’s time for the middle class to stand up and be heard. National rallies will garner national press coverage. People in Anchorage came together within a few short days by simply sending press releases to their local media:

Is this the article?:

Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes

From the above ref. article:

And four months ago, a Wasilla blogger, Sherry Whitstine, who chronicles the governor’s career with an astringent eye, answered her phone to hear an assistant to the governor on the line, she said.

“You should be ashamed!” Ivy Frye, the assistant, told her. “Stop blogging. Stop blogging right now!”

Dunno if anyone linked to this, but funniest article I’ve read for a while about Palin. From George Saunders of the New Yorker…..tried to snip a paragraph for show and tell, but it’s all good….”My Gal”…

Round of applause AKM! Can’t wait to see the makeover, but sure love this site as it is! Where do I get the “I heart AKMuckraker” T-shirt? 2.5 million cracks in the Republican facade and counting. A fellow reader posted two of your Anti-Palin rally pics on the Sarasota Herald Tribune comments page after I posted the link to your wonderful blog. You have a huge fan in Florida, and I am trying hard to educate these Floridian Republicans, but you know the saying, you can lead a horse to water……It is heartening to know there are folks like all of you on here who are fighting the good fight and working hard to get to the truth.

On a more serious topic! I was listening to Michael Baisden earlier, he was addressing a serious issue in regards to the non-registered African Americans in our Nation.

Philadelphia – 35% non-registered African Americans
Tampa – same, give or take a few percentages
Ft. Lauderdale – same, give or take a few percentages
Miami – same, give or take a few percentages

I couldn’t remember the number of other Florida cities, or other major cities in other states.

What can we do to get these folks registered, and casting their votes?

AKM- Little did I know that when I clicked on a link in a story on the first day of Palin’s candidacy that I would not only be brought to such a thoughtful Blog, but that there were several million others who also came along for the ride. The community here has been terrific, and it’s just amazing to see how much we all care about this country.

It’s great to see your site taking off, and I look forward to the revamp and re-polish. I hope that no matter what the outcome of the election, this community continues to thrive not only as a source for Alaskan Politics, but politics in general.

One personal note of thanks to AKM: although I’ve been writing on and off over the past few years, I hadn’t been kicked into gear like I am now by this site and the good folks on it. My sincerest thanks to you for being the catalyst of my reawakening.

I have to tell somebody…
I just got back from Petco with my dogs where I met a man with a six-month old 100% black wolf puppy. He was a beautiful animal with yellow eyes. His wolf puppy and my dogs touched noses and then I, who never speaks to strangers about politics, said, I bet you’re not voting for that wolf-killer Palin. You know she shoots wolves from airplanes after chasing them mercilessly and then she chops off their left front foreleg for the $150. bounty that she offered for the death of the wolves. He said he WAS going to vote for her and I said, PuuuLLease…how can you? He said that one issue wouldn’t make him change his vote. I said, that is unbelieveable to me. She likes to kill things. That would do it for me…. at least I spoke up and the other people in the store heard me, too. Got to get the word out!!!!

The woman who cuts my hair told me this afternoon that one of the reasons she does not like Obama is because he is running as an African-American and never mentions that his mother was white. To give the devil her due, she apparently finds it to be disingenuous with any celebrity who has a white parent and yet portrays him or herself as black.

I didn’t argue as she does a great haircut and I really like her, but my brain was saying “of all the stupid reasons, you have to pick this?”

He does mention his white heritage. really, could you see him telling someone he’s white through email or phone then showing up? He didn’t decide he had to choose, society decided he had to choose. It’s easy for Tiger, he was a young phenom, probably never applied for a job.

Way to go, AKM. Looking forward to the new format. Since I found you several weeks ago (maybe a link from Talking Points Memo?) this is my first “stop” in the morning and my last in the evening – not to mention lurking throughout the day. It’s impossible to keep up with the comments and links – plus the networking, from postcard campaigns to rallies. This is grassroots democracy at its best. And, I hate to admit this, b/c it’s such a serious election, but I’ve never enjoyed an election as much as this.

Definitely need t-shits – I don’t have an original suggestion, but maybe a combination of Femalady’s and Lauren’s – the yellow wellies with the phrase “I went to Mudflats and all I got was…The Truth.”

ATTENTION all Mudpups!

I am eternally grateful to AKM for all she’s done and look forward eagerly to the evolved Mudflats. BUT–I think we need to tread carefully about when it comes to “outing” her–tracking down videos, finding pictures, etc. Reading between the lines, it has seemed to me that AKM wants, for very good reasons, to keep her identity private (refer to her posting about wanting a bag over her head during the interview at the dinner she was invited to, and the agreed-upon voice distortion). And we know from the comment Memphis references above she’s not hiding her looks! 🙂

AKM probably needs the protection that anonymity gives her and her family. Let’s respect that. She’s done so incredibly much for us; we have to do what we can to keep her safe.

Hi Mudpals! I actually had to work today or my husband, Ammo Canal Palin, said he would unplug my computer. My morning ritual has changed from opening Hotmail to opening Mudflats ever since “P” day (Aug 29). I have also decided to redo my Palin name to include my middle name because someone else got Mustache Warthog and mvngfwd becomes Rope “Hoover” Palin (ick, herbert reference). So I’d like to introduce myself as mvngfwd aka WMD Cessna Palin! I swear that is what came up and Ammo loved it since I was such a “there are no WMD!” screamer before the invasion of Iraq.

AKM, I have praised you before and I will praise you forever. You are our light at the end of what started as a very dark tunnel. Just keep shining and we will follow you into the light.

On a Florida note, I had to drive from Miami to Delray today and only saw one McCain bumper sticker. But I saw 15 Obama ones and we all honked, smiled and thumbed up each other as we drove past. I do not believe we are a lost cause down here, at all. When Ammo and I saw Obama here during the primaries, 35,000 people came out in a downpour to see him. We shared umbrellas, joy, laughter and passion. These were people from all walks of life who came out during a work day to see the Man. I think that is what did it for my Republican, he became an Obamacan that day. Thus my plea for a Florida rally push. Any Floridians want to take me up on this? We owe America this much for the debacle of 2000. Most people here are cell phone based and I really do not think the polls represent the reality of Florida 2008. And I am calling that Marketing company in NYC (PLO calls) tomorrow and giving them a piece of my mind. I was in advertising/publishing for 10 years in NYC so I will give them a NewYawk ass kicking. I’m looking into the owners now.

Keep shining the light my fellow Mudpals and yes, we can change the world for better. Peace!

Irs not illegal to give money to a friend in the US. And People in the US are free to donate to political causes.

You’ll run into trouble if you try to make a political donation by using an intermediary to hide the donation.

For example if you sent me $10,000 for McCain the government would have a hard time proving anything, since I would donate $9,000 to Obama and go and have a fabulous evening celebrating.

Unfortunately, our society has not yet become sufficiently color-blind to accept “other” or “both” as an identity. I think it’s more than race. It’s also cultural. I have a mixed race DIL. She describes herself as a “mutt” because she contains a marvelous variety of racial, ethnic and cultural strains. I love her, no matter how she or her family members choose to self-identify. And more importantly, she and my son are crazy about each other. What more could I ask?

Her experience in being accepted is far different than my own. My ex FIL took one look at my pierced ears some 40+ years ago and decided that I was a Mexican. No matter that I was fair-skinned, freckle-faced and blue-eyed! It was such an outrageous claim that for years I didn’t realize he was serious — that it was his negative assessment of me as a person on the basis of something so trivial. Thank God that much of America has moved beyond that. Would that the rest could do so — and soon.

This has been such an educational and fun read. No matter what happens after the McCain team moves on, the scandals die down and the election on Nov 4 is still in litigation….KEEP GOING!

I am in California and enjoy learning about Alaska, it’s people, and how they are working to change government with online action. How many cliches can I throw in here? From The Untouchables….”Never stop fighting till the fight is done”……from Jim Valvano, the North Carolina State coach who died of cancer: “Never give up, don’t ever give up”. Heck, why not drop a little Terminator on them: “And he absolutely will not stop, until you are dead!”

Okay, so I don’t know Mudflats gender and I am pretty sure Mudflats is not going to out there with a shotgun and dropping corrupt officials like wolves and bears being shot from a plane (bastards!), but dammit, Mudflats will be dropping them with words of their misdeeds that we can read here….just about everyday!

@ Palmdale, CA (16:24:24)…

I relate to your post there.. I am an American Mutt ie: part Norwegion, British, Cherokee Indian, and German, born and raised in Portland, Oregon.
My cousin, Melia (like a sister to me) is part African and part my mix
My other cousin is part Filipino and part my mix…
The list goes on and on in our family dating back to when our grandfather immigrated here from Norway in 1928.
I grew up in the 60’s here in Oregon – I looked like just a white girl, but was actually a tomboy and threw boys off their bikes when they called my cousin the N word. And I’d get in trouble, but my 6’2″ mother would tell their mothers, “Why does my daughter have to teach your boys to be civil and behave?”

Oregon has come a long way from even prior to the 60’s … just look at the May 18 2008 Obama Rally we had here in the heart of Portland, Oregon – this was the LARGEST DEMOCRATIC Primary Rally in HISTORY:

Barack Obama – Portland, Oregon: City of Blinding Lights

My grandfather taught his kids well, my mother taught me well, I teach my children as well: to love and respect one another and this will not fail.

I hope you saw my earlier post about this POWERFUL video that young and old can relate to called:

OMG. I’m starting more posts with that these days….anyway, I have been appalled anew.

A group called Bornalivetruth.org (and you can just imagine what’s coming, can’t you) has a new ad which just ran in front of my very own eyes during the commercial break on the Rachel Maddow show. I would give you the website, but, honestly, I don’t want the site to get more traffic than it should. So, I give you the text of the ad (imagine it being read by a young woman):

Can you imagine not giving babies their basic human rights, no matter how they entered our world? My name is Gianna Jessen, born 31 years ago after a failed abortion. I’m a survivor, as are many others…but if Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn’t be here.

Unfortunately, Barack Obama voted four times against affording these babies their most basic human right. I have serious concerns about Senator Obama’s record and views on this issue, given he voted against these protections four times as a state Senator. Just as abuse victims share their stories to educate the public, fight for the common good and hope that as a result politicians do what’s right, I felt it was important to come forward and give these new born babies a voice.

I am living proof these babies have a right to live, and I invite you to learn more about Senator Obama’s record on this important issue.

I honestly don’t know whether I’ll end being 500 pounds or an alcoholic if this stuff keeps up.

You do a great service to all of us who read, unfortunately I believe many people in this country never read a damn thing and receive their info from TV or gossip. Sorry state of affairs, but then again look at what was elected the last 8 years. Plus with your writing one needs a decent education to understand and that is also lacking in many. Take care, be careful in all that you do and continued success in search of the truth. The truth is all most of are asking.

You are doing an awesome job…THANKS.

Interestingly, in my mail box this evening was an envelope from “the Governor of the State of Alaska”. Turned out to be a tourism pitch, but I think I may just have to write her back🙂

I love your blog. Your voice of reason keeps me hopeful that there are intelligent voters out there who don’t buy into the trainwreck that is the McCain/Palin ticket. Keep up the great work!

CalGal, Obama did have a press conference today, in Golden, CO, and he was superb. Joe Biden was also terrific in PA.

Here are a couple of excerpts.

Great idea! I can’t wait to see it and congratulations on how popular your blog has become. But then again, how could it not? You write so well, you are right in tune with what is going on currently, and you are a wealth of information. By the way, I found you when I was looking at a Wasilla City Hall entry on Wikipedia that used your picture. I saw that they had permission to use it if they linked back to you at http://www.mudflats.wordpress.com, so I clicked the provided link, and have been here ever since.

Interesting palinforvp link, bPoint. I don’t troll the conservative sites – don’t need high blood pressure problems – but it was fun to peek inside their heads for a few. So these folks were rallying to get her the VP nod! Are they all high school classmates who are expecting a job in DC or something? It would happen!

Well it sounds like they are whining about the investigation – that apparently was bipartisan until the Repug attorneys appeared. Maybe they will squash it. But the rest of the country will add this to the negatives that are piling up about Palin anyway.

I have a governor under investigation and a few past ones who have been or are in prison. It puts a damper on State pride, for sure.

I tried to list to that tape they are excited about on the palinforvp site. It sounds like something from the movie White Noise. Can’t make anything out, but they seem to think it needs to go to Rush and Greta fast.

AKM,
Your site deserves its meteoric rise. It is one of the most informative and straight-ahead blogs on the ‘net. A number of my old favorites have linked to you now. Best of luck in your evolution. But, please, don’t change too much. Your blog is wonderful as it is, and, at 71 years old, I can’t stand much more change (unless it’s the kind Obama speaks of).

After 335 messages of tribute and thanks, there is literally nothing original or unique to say. But, as I live in Washington, the old quote that everything has been said, but not everyone has said it yet has new meaning. I just feel a deep sense of pride and patriotism – the real kind, not the Karl Rove use as sledgehammer on his opponents kind. Your blog, and all of the contributors here have been the finest example of democracy and citizenship we have seen in a generation. If there is one thing I would suggest for your new blog is that you retain and archive the first two weeks of this blog as it actually appeared and leave it up so that historians and civics teachers will be able to access it and use it as a tool for future generations. It truly is an American story – one that actually deserves that title and the reverence it so rightly deserves. Keep up the good work – but let’s hang on to this piece of Americana. Thank you so much for allowing me to share in this experience.

Please, in addition to the “Donate” button to your blog, is it possible to add a “SEARCH: button? You are expanding as quickly as the proverbial “cat who had nine kittens who had nine kittens who had nine kittens…”. I would love to be able to track certain posters whose thoughts I find compelling, but it gets difficult at this rate of growth.

Does anyone else think it is time for Bristol to file for emancipation? Since her mother decided to sacrifice her daughter’s privacy on the alter of her own ego, perhaps we should start a fund, not only to pay for Bristol’s legal fees, but also her mental health care. If the fund grew large enough, she could even refuse to marry Levi, who ignored her the entire time he sat on camera glorying in the fact his sperm are mobile and the advantage he perceives that to be!

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

* If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic, different.’

* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow , Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senaterepresenting a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you
don’t have any real leadership e xperience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking
executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughte r ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America ‘s.

* If you’re husband is nicknamed ‘First Dude’, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now

A warm salute from Sacramento, AKM. I can’t tell you how much this blog has meant to me, in so many ways. It is fantastic…intelligent, informative, and accurate, and a great group. Thank you for this and for bringing all Mudpuppies, Alaskan and otherwise, together. I think we’re all part Alaskan now.

As a bonus, I come away with more than knowledge, a new palin baby name: Flex Gunship. How, um, nice…you rock AKMudraker! Thank you so much.

So excited about your new site. Good idea someone had up above here somewhere–the ability for us to speak to others on here (didn’t someone say that or am I just hallucinating after all these hours of trying to catch up?). One of your wonderful people on here made a sign for me for the rally (don’t know who) and another wonderful Mudflatian took a picture of it–can’t find either now. And, since, I am asking for stuff, I also like the idea above (again, was it there or just in my muddy mind?) of the ability for more indepth search (user names, key words) in the comments sections. There have been so many great articles posted in the comments that oftentimes I make a mental note to return to it but, alas, a muddy mind. . .

So I guess I just want things and stuff that might cost upwards to about a kazillion dollars; however, I think you get the point now that all of us want to give you donations. (And, besides, if you can’t get the amount needed to cover all these perks, I believe you have people from every state in the union and we can just lobby our legislators for earmarks to go to you to maintain this site.)

Said it before, will say it again–Mudflats AKM, I love you, man, woman, extra terrestrial, or one of those elephants that paints–You have sparked a revolt! Thank you for being a great citizen!

A bit too much information?

ACTIVE LINKS TO WEBSITES AND BLOGS GIVEN WHEN POSTING?

Since the changes in the blog, clicking on some of the names and/or headings will take you directly to various websites/blogs/information. I am not sure that everyone wants to share all that information…

When you fill out this “Leave a comment” it says that Mail (will not be published). However, it doesn’t say that websites WILL be published, as are personal blogs.

I use Google, perhaps that has some connection, but that shouldn’t matter, should it?

Perhaps you should tell people that websites and blog links are active?

From England aka Spoon Archer Palin

Completely off topic on both counts:
I’m begining to love Bill O’Reilly….he just read out a letter from a viewer who accused him of “endorsing” Barack Obama with his series of programs about him and Michelle.

I’m getting a little worried about Bill, he’s been acting very strange since that interview with Obama;~

@ Andrea 14:08 re. posting on the England for Obama website.
I’m honoured that you asked but sorry that I can’t commit myself to that. With the world being so flat re. info flow, I’m quite sure that I won’t have any news for your readers plus I work FT and family as well to look after. For now I’ll weave my elect Obama efforts into my day to day activities, talking to friends in US, anyone here who sounds American and sending out e-ms . Off topic (again) you have a great personal website! You are so talented..listened to some of your music, very nice.

Dear AKM,

I’m backtracking to catch up on some comments I’ve missed, and since this is yesterday’s blognews now, you may not come back here, but nevertheless, I wanted to add my congratulations to this thread of well-wishes. There is NO other blog where I’ve felt so compelled to read the community’s comments and join in (as time allows!). It’s a real testament to the energy and spirit you bring to this blog that allowed such a response to grow and flourish. Looking forward to the grand new redesign! (though I’ve loved this one.)

Ok, as to the gender thing? No, it really doesn’t matter; kickass reporting & writing transcends all of that. And I duly note you’ve neither confirmed nor denied the M or F question. But I laughed at the early poster (forgot the name now; it was hundreds of comments ago) who said she had a bet going. I thought you were female early on, then thought I was wrong after all the male references. Just a whole lot of erroneous assumption amongst posters, perhaps. At any rate, as a woman who went with a nongendered handle to start blog writing, even here in the 21st century I find a degree of relief in not being so identified (of course, I call myself a feminist in enough entries that one might assume…). Curious thing, gender assumptions, ain’t they, as the Cirque du Palin has more than demonstrated. Previously sexist right-wing commentators suddenly calling sexism on people! Hilarious, when it’s not outright vile & disgusting.

Anyhooo…. middle of the night here. Off I go to catch up on the most recent entries, though reading comments will sadly have to wait another day.

Kudos! Mazel Tov! Great Congratulations!

This Obama supporter (financially and emotionally) here in Chicago discovered your blog because of womenagainstsarahpalin.blogspot.com. YOU GO!! Your first-hand information is worth far more than the brain dead MSM that’s been denied any access to this ‘candidate’. It’s clear and obvious that Palin was installed so she could instantly become the Bible Totin’ candidate the far Right has prayed for for decades.

Boy are they going to be surprised when Jesus fails to come and rescue them after they’ve destroyed what’s left of the nation after Bush is out.

My Aunt Lives down the Street from the Obama’s. She is a Christian White in her 60’s. She said Barack,Michelle and the girls are really down to earth good Christians. My Aunt has said the Obama’s are genuine and honest good natured. It has to be hard for them in a political race that is full of lies and slander. Obama abortion ad’s are false. My Aunt said if he isn’t elected we will loose a chance in lifetime to have a real leader for working americans in this country. The Obama’s are conservative in values. The media and repulicans will call him a liberal because they want to help the poor and middle class. Obama is a leader who wants to protect women’s rights equal pay. I guess that’s liberal in the mind of the republicans. Anyway this is a great blog I am trying to get my Aunt to read it, she does not own a computer.
Is there anyone here in Florida who can tell me what that state is thinking regarding McCain and Obama?

You’ve grown so fast Muddy, (a new nickname I’ve been using for you)!
You are “The little blog that could.” You’ve not lost any steam from the first day I tuned in (even before SP’s nomination, I think).
You’ve kept me informed and been the source of many conversations on and off my computer. Thank you for that and congrats on the new updated look that will be coming our way.
You certainly deserve the best.
I must say though, that part of the attraction, for me anyway, was that your novel little blog was just that … a novel little blog. I’m hoping that some of that homey quality will remain.
Keep chugging.

When Sarah was announced as the VP candidate, I searched for her through
Windows Live Search, and found her picture as Jock of the Rock in her thong
bikini. Somehow I also stumbled on your site and have been an avid reader
since. I’m 56 years old and this is the first national election I have ever voted
in. (didn’t care until I became disabled and am facing death) This is the most
important election in many years and thanks to your amazing blog and the
intelligent readers who post here, it truly makes me thankful to be an American.
I do not post often. I always get in at the end of the postings. Having an addictive personality I have a new addiction and that is MUDFLATS. Thank you
so much for being there for us. Best of luck with your new site and may GOD
bless you and yours for spreading the truth. AXE DIESEL PALIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to say a warm congratulations from one “snowy” state to another. I was forwarded one of your blogs by a co-worker and just wanted you to know that your truth is being spread far and wide. I consider myself to be up on things and find it interesting to be learning more about Gov Palin. I’m savvy enough to know that the McCain team will put a spin on all types of things, so it’s quite impressive to be able to find a direct source to the local Alaskan truth. Keep up the good work and I’ll be passing your site along to my political minded counterparts! Have a blessed day!!
