She’s Baa-aack! Palin in Alaska. What She Didn’t Say.

11 09 2008

Sarah Palin returned to Alaska yesterday, and was greeted in Fairbanks by a crowd of 3,000 cheering fans.

She said a lot of what you’d expect. She giddily told the crowd about everyone in the Lower 48 chanting “Drill Baby Drill!” everywhere she went. Remember that Alaska is a pro-drilling crowd of the highest order. One of the reasons John McCain came in dead last in the Republican primary, after Ron Paul, is his opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He also didn’t wow evangelical voters either. But he seems to be tip-toeing his way in the “pro-life”, pro-drilling direction lately. Go figure.

Palin also made reference to the $1200 energy rebate that’s about to land in the bank account of every Alaskan man, woman and child. This amount is in addition to the $2069 permanent fund dividend check from oil profits in the state that also goes in to the bank account of every man woman and child. As you can imagine, handing out wads of cash to people doesn’t hurt your approval ratings. The Permanent Fund Dividend (pfd) is something Alaskans have gotten every year since 1980, and has ranged from a few hundred dollars to this years biggest check ever. The energy rebate, though, is something new. Energy prices in Alaska are outrageously high. Despite our proximity to all this fossil fuel, we have the highest gas prices in the nation, and rural communities out in bush Alaska can be paying $6-$8 a gallon for gas. Winter is just around the corner here, and people are justifiably nervous about staying warm.

She talked about how this type of energy rebate is “unheard of in other states”. That one had to be for the national media, because, of course it’s unheard of in other states… the only reason we’re getting it is because the price of oil is so high, and as the oil companies make more money, so does our permanent fund, and so do we. We all know that. It got applause anyway – it’s cash. She went on to say:

“But we believed that you believed you could spend that money better than government could spend it for you.”

Also a bit strange, because Palin’s original idea was to give Alaskans an energy debit card that would have a certain amount each month and had to be used for energy expenses. Eventually, she was talked out of it, and just decided to stick with cold hard cash… which means many Alaskans are probably going to be getting big screen TVs and freezing their butts off this winter. But that’s another story.

So what didn’t she say? She didn’t use her famous, “commyuunity orrrganizer” line, and pulled back on the snarky comments about Obama. Obama won 75% of the caucus votes in Alaska, and turned the state (until recently) into an actual ‘swing state’ for the first time in memory. Don’t underestimate Obama’s support in Alaska.

She also didn’t say, “And I said ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ on that Bridge to Nowhere.” It’s tough to lie to the home town crowd. Besides, it wasn’t on the teleprompter.

Another thing that wasn’t seen was the crowd of Obama supporters that showed up at the rally. One Mudflats reader in Fairbanks estimated the Obama crowd at 70 or more. The Anchorage Daily News said it was more than two dozen. I guess 70 is more than two dozen. Either way it’s a good turnout considering only Palin supporters were encouraged to attend. One rally-goer, who made it into the hangar where Palin was about to speak, held up a sign that said “Palin: per diem fraud.”

Alaska State Troopers subdued him and escorted him outside at the request of the rally’s hosts, the state Republican Party.

“Subdued” him? I don’t have any details on that, but it doesn’t sound like, “politely asked him to leave.”

So, fellow Alaskan Republicans must have been really excited to see one of their own become such a rising star, and the darling of the Republican Party, right? Let’s hear from Fairbanks Republican Representative Jay Ramras who was at the event. What do you think about our Sarah, Jay?

“It’s dangerous up here to do any truth telling — we all want to have a future and she’s going to control the state for the next four years whether she’s vice president or governor or senator or turning the wheels from home in Wasilla. I mean she’s a powerful woman.”

Hmmmm.

A 30 second PSA I just did in iMovie. Pay it forward.

We simply cannot let this reckless risk to our country happen.

AKM: I’ve wondered about that with regard to the anchorage daily news. On the one hand, that have, perhaps courageously, printed some disparaging stories about her over time (just reporting the facts, ma’am). But they seem to have really been soft-pedaling the last couple of weeks. It seems to me they might be caught between a rock and a hard place because of what Jay Ramras said. If they tell the truth so forcefully that it contributes to Palin losing the election, she’s back in Alaska! Sounds like a lot of people in Alaska have some reason to want her as far away as possible. Your thoughts?

I wouldn’t disagree with anything you said. I believe this is why the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal articles have been so surprising to Alaskans. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Alaska is a small town. We all have to live here, and it can be difficult to walk that line. There are plenty of people who call the Anchorage Daily News a socialist rag. Others are furious because they haven’t been hard-hitting enough with Palin. I don’t envy them. Additionally, McClatchy just laid off a bunch of people at ADN, which doesn’t help.

Mudflats – may I just ask that we go on the record that EVERYONE is ProLife. The difference is that many of us are PRO-CHOICE meaning the Government, no matter how well serving, stays the hell out of my bedroom, away from my body, and let’s me make tough decisions with those who matter most to me. THAT GROUP IS ANTI-ABORTION, and we need to start calling them on it.

Sorry for the rant, but it drives me nuts. We’re all freaking Pro-Life.

Lies, Damned Lies And Sarah Palin

She – along with the Iraq war – is the embodiment of McCain’s claim to presidential judgment and experience. If she is a fraud, and has been proven a demonstrable liar in ways that a competent campaign would have vetted six months ago, McCain’s campaign is over, and deserves to be over. As is the election.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080911/ap_on_el_pr/mccain_vietnam_video;_ylt=AmKj0hj7CQOkuou1QulGqxbZn414

“SENATOR John McCain’s “Faith of My Fathers,” written with his chief of staff, Mark Salter, sketches his family background and boyhood, gives greater attention to his time at Annapolis and as a Navy flier and dwells longest on his five and a half years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. It ends with his regained freedom and vow of continued public service. By now the image of John McCain just after his release in 1973 is a familiar one: hobbling on crutches but still able to salute, every beaten, tortured inch of him an American hero.”

Amen! Yes, who has ever been “pro-abortion?” That would imply people deliberately getting pregnant – so they could have an abortion.

No woman really “wants” an abortion, not even a woman who has one.

To my mind, if the “right to lifers” were really serious, they would step up to the plate and guarantee every pregnant woman that they would help support and care for her child – through college.

It’s wrong to saddle someone with raising a child if you don’t provide the means to do it!

With one of the most passionate elections in recent times _ along with comic material galore _ “Saturday Night Live” is beginning early this year. Three prime-time shows are also planned on NBC, as well as a special the night before the election.

Excellent OpEd:

Sarah Palin: The American Idol candidate
September 11, 2008

I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin’s appeal. She’s the “American Idol” candidate. Consider. What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing. There’s a reason “American Idol” gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show!

My problem is, I don’t want to be up there. I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq. Someone who doesn’t repeat bald- faced lies about earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere. Someone who doesn’t appoint Alaskan politicians to “study” global warming, because, hello! It has been studied. The returns are convincing enough that John McCain and Barack Obama are darned near in agreement.

I would also want someone who didn’t make a teeny little sneer when referring to “people who go to the Ivy League.” When I was a teen I dreamed of going to Harvard, but my dad, an electrician, told me, “Boy, we don’t have the money. Thank your lucky stars you were born in Urbana and can go to the University of Illinois right here in town.” So I did, very happily. Although Palin gets laughs when she mentions the “elite” Ivy League, she sure did attend the heck out of college.

Five different schools in six years. What was that about?

And how can a politician her age have never have gone to Europe? My dad had died, my mom was working as a book-keeper and I had a job at the local newspaper when, at 19, I scraped together $240 for a charter flight to Europe. I had Arthur Frommer’s $5 a Day under my arm, started in London, even rented a Vespa and drove in the traffic of Rome. A few years later, I was able to send my mom, along with the $15 a Day book.

You don’t need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world. What kind of a person (who has the money) arrives at the age of 44 and has only been out of the country once, on an official tour to Iraq? Sarah Palin’s travel record is that of a provincial, not someone who is equipped to deal with global issues.

But some people like that. She’s never traveled to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America or Down Under? That makes her like them. She didn’t go to Harvard? Good for her! There a lot of hockey moms who haven’t seen London, but most of them would probably love to, if they had the dough. And they’d be proud if one of their kids won a scholarship to Harvard.

I trust the American people will see through Palin, and save the Republic in November. The most damning indictment against her is that she considered herself a good choice to be a heartbeat away. That shows bad judgment.

I mean she’s a powerful woman,” Jay Ramras, a Republican state representative from Fairbanks, said in an interview earlier this week” as quoted in this Alaska Daily News story

as the one trying to quell the troopergate investigation, via Daily Kos above?:

““We have to prevent this because it is going to diminish the reputation of Alaska,” [Republican state Rep. and House Judiciary Committee chair Jay] Ramras said. ”

Rasmussen, 9/9/08 (from registration-restricted crosstabs, likely voters):

Among all voters:

39% very favorable
17% somewhat favorable
14% somewhat unfavorable
26% very unfavorable

Gee, approval ratings are just a few points off of 60% for the “wildly popular governor.” But, let’s look a little closer at those numbers. Conservatives love her, but what about moderates? Those numbers paint a different picture:

20% very favorable
15% somewhat favorable
26% somewhat unfavorable
35% very unfavorable
3% not sure

Only 35% of moderates view her favorably. In other words, among this key block of voters, Pinocchio Palin is doing about as well as President Bush. For comparison purposes, Joe Biden is viewed favorably by 70% of moderates.

The difference between the two sides of the abortion debate is only the number of options you can choose from. Samantha Bee did a segment on the Daily Show where she was trying to trick Republican delegates into saying that Bristol had a choice that her mother would deny other pregnant teens. While somewhat funny, I thought it missed the point. Sarah wants us to choose between 2 options only: keeping the baby or putting it up for adoption. So it seems more honest to me to say that while I am pro-choice and pro-life, I am NOT anti-abortion. (I certainly am not pro-abortion!)

PS: I live in Juneau, where a Planned Parenthood clinic is soon to open. That should be interesting!

TheraP —

Somewhat offtopic, but there is a third solution for an unwanted pregnancy: adoption. That is how my wife & I have a 7 month-old daughter as I type this. Catholic Charities assisted us in connecting to a woman who gave us this great gift, so at least some of the groups are “walking the walk”. And this is an open adoption — the birth mother will always have a connection to her, unlike the old days. Unlike what happened to me due to my stepmother.

That said, neither or my wife are opposed to abortion being included as one of the possible choices. There are, sad to say, some cases where it is the best choice. CC approached us about many possible birth mothers, whose child would come with severe problems. (More specifically, I heard of one instance about a baby who was damaged at birth, & would require thousands of dollars in medical care — yet die before it could attend school.) At the same time, there were many cases where the problem was simply that the mother could not take care or raise the child.

It’s a complex problem. People like Sarah Palin would oversimplify it, & force people to settle for a worse solution.

Doesn’t it seem a little late for their argument about reputations – particularly as the priority?

as george (11:56:34) quoted (and accurately questions):

““We have to prevent this because it is going to diminish the reputation of Alaska,” [Republican state Rep. and House Judiciary Committee chair Jay] Ramras said. ”

Which, for some reason, reminds me of the taped conversation between Bailey and Rodney Dial (excerpted below):

“The Palins can’t figure out why nothing is going on. … ”

“…and there is a custody situation, there is a strong possibility that the governor herself may get subpoenaed to talk about all this stuff on the stand…

“…It would be ugly. I don’t think anybody wants that…”

One would think that if Palin was that concerned about the welfare of her sister, testifying before the court on her behalf would have been the *best* (and appropriate) thing she and her husband could have done…

Oh. Wait. Right.

you are spot on – and what a gift you have with your baby! Congratulations! I don’t think any of us would want to take that away.

Living in the South as I do, my son has a friend, from the Youth Group at his church, who got pregnant as a sophomore in HS from her College Frosh BF. Her parents were mortified – shut off all communication between the daughter and her friends, shipped her off to VA (and lied to everyone that she had decided to go to school near her Aunt….) and basically just wrote the young lady off. They changed churches so they wouldn’t have to face us – is that NOT SAD? I mean, we were to help, love and support whatever the decision had been with that family. But their “public persona” was so much more important than anything else. I know every family faces this in some different way – it’s just not for ME to place judgment. I think what most of us are saying is this is NOT A GOVERNMENT DECISION. This is a private affair between the family and the family doctor. To insert a government into this is barbaric and base. This is a private decision that should be treated with love, delicacy and care. Hope that is not offensive. We all have to face our own sins, and far be it for me to place one sin above another.

The problem with the whole “Pro-life” wording, is that many of these same people also believe in the death penalty, and are against social programs that make lives better. They *protect* life as long as it is a being inside of a womb.

“It’s dangerous up here to do any truth telling — we all want to have a future and she’s going to control the state for the next four years.”

Like any political bully, she’s going to need a good metaphorical punch in the nose before she stops sneering and intimidating her way through life. It seems the State Legislature wasn’t afraid to give her a good bipartisan smack down, at least until about a week ago. I hope there’s enough spine left in Alaska’s legislative and judicial systems for someone to do the right thing.

Concerning Charlie Gibson and his questions, we should keep in mind his personal financial stake in the final outcome of the election and how that will influence his questioning of Palin, or lack thereof…..Gibson is a multi-multi-millionaire and thus he will be in that small 5% of the richest american who won’t be getting a tax cut under Obama……and, not to mention his pitiful performance in the primary debates, we can’t forget how he broke down in tears – on the air – whining about how unfair he thought it was that Obama was raising more money than McCain and would forgo public funds….

No doubt Mr. Gibson is in a Lose/Lose situation, but he accepted the assignment and should be accountable to do it to the best of his ability. What is it nowadays that we don’t expect people to 150% in their jobs? He has to make a decision whether he is a journalist and therefore follows the edicts of a journalist, or if he is a celebrity reporter. Once that decision is made, he needs to be treated as such.

His financial standing should be of no consequence to his job requirements. Otherwise, we would have never had the Roosevelts or Kennedy, all liberals who did great things for this Country.

I personally will be surprised if he has any kahoona’s to do a good job, but…we shall see…

Hey, Americans: thanks for the $500-million gift to the TransCanada Corp.

Though why you’re doing it is a real mystery to us in Canada. Is it a mystery to you, too?

The Financial Post reports in a Dow Jones dispatch Saturday that BP PLC said Friday that it would consider making shipping commitments on a $26-billion natural gas pipeline from Alaska, despite the U.K. oil major’s support for a rival project. The unbylined item quotes BP Alaska spokesman Steve Rinehart as saying, “We will entertain fairly any opportunities to move gas off [Alaska’s] North Slope.”
BP has joined with U.S. firm ConocoPhillips Ltd. to build a pipeline, dubbed Denali, that would move four billion cubic feet of natural gas from Alaska to Alberta, and then on to the lower 48 states. The two companies jointly own about 56 per cent of Alaska’s 35 trillion cubic feet of known gas reserves, Mr. Rinehart said.
However, Alaska’s government is championing TransCanada’s proposal. With no gas production of its own, TransCanada will need its rivals’ support to go ahead, along with ExxonMobil Corp., which controls the biggest share of North Slope gas with a 36-per-cent share.
Both TransCanada and the Denali proponents are planning to conduct an open season to win firm shipping commitments in 2010. Several industry observers reckon the competing projects will eventually merge.

TransCanada Corp. doesn’t yet have the state natural gas pipeline license legislators approved, but an executive with the Calgary-based energy firm says it has already started working on the huge project…

…The company is proceeding with the work in anticipation of receiving an exclusive state license from the administration of Gov. Sarah Palin, who on Wednesday signed the bill the Legislature passed this month authorizing state officials to award to the license to TransCanada…

…The license is a pact spelling out commitments between the state and TransCanada, which the Palin administration chose in January from among a handful of bidders.

In exchange for the state reimbursing up to $500 million of the company’s planning expenses, TransCanada has pledged to try to assemble the customers, financing and regulatory clearances for a megaproject that could cost more than $30 billion. If all goes according to plan, TransCanada has said it could have the first gas flowing by 2018.

The law authorizing the license for TransCanada doesn’t take effect for 90 days. The company will get the license after that period, said Marty Rutherford, head of Palin’s gas team…

…TransCanada isn’t the only company planning a gas line, for decades a top state economic development goal

Two companies TransCanada will try to recruit as customers for its pipeline — North Slope oil and gas producers BP and Conoco Phillips — have formed an alliance called Denali to pursue a gas line of their own…

It’s similar to TransCanada’s project — a long, large-diameter pipe that would follow the Alaska Highway to an existing pipeline network in Alberta, Canada.

Denali didn’t apply for the state license and doesn’t need it to carry out its project. Denali has been running print and broadcast ads touting its own field work in Alaska as well as its hiring efforts…

I think I’ve figured out why men on the religious far right love Palin so much: She’s their wet dream.

No, really…think about it. She thinks like a man (not distracted by all those typically fussy feminine things), loves guns (the bigger, badder, the better), likes to kill stuff (animals, ideas, freedom, truth, people who get in her way…so far the latter isn’t physically), creates her own reality (ya gotta love those Domionists), pops out babies on cue, and oh, by the way, she’s gorgeous and probably looks great in bed with that hair spread out over the pillow.

Mind you, they probably don’t even admit this to themselves. After all, doesn’t the Bible and God tell you that would be a really bad thing? The further right you go, the more repressed you are. No one cares if there’s a rational thought in her pretty little head; this is their chance to publicly get off on a delectable dish in a socially acceptable way. And they can all get together and congratulate and support each other in the process. It’s not surprising that they rabidly defend her so illogically; they’re not thinking with their upper brain.

Yup, I think that’s it.

I totally agree with you that MSM is not doing their job on two fronts.

First, if it were ANY OTHER PERSON up for the VP spot refusing to give interviews, they would be up in arms! Especially Fox News! So why are they not saying more about it?

Secondly, if it were ANY OTHER PERSON who was up for the VP spot currently under investigation, and doing all they can to stop the investigation, the MSM would be all over the story. So why are they not saying more about it?

Someone has very deep pockets. The American public are not stupid, we know people are being bought off or intimidated as we speak.

I am totally confused. The entire world now knows, that there are taped phone calls…and hidden and not so hidden emails proving that Palin, her husband and her staff did intervene in trying to get trooper Wooten fired.

How is it then, that her lawyer can, with any pride..or even with a straight face, demand that the legislature back off? What the hell is going on? If this was about you or me, all hell would break loose.

These people are supposed to hold themselves to a higher standard. These are the people who write the laws for the citizens they govern…yet they are immune? They get to toss the investigation and what? We are supposed to forget and say…oh well.

How very very sad. I dont really have any hope for Charlie Gibson tonight. He will sell his soul if he hasnt already. Palin will be folksy and cute…she might be asked a question or two that she had already been told would be asked…thereby having a ready answer. Anyone who watches tonight who wants to see something true will be disappointed…those who want only what they believe to be a perfect princess will get that. Small things amuse small minds I suppose.

Truly…I dont think my blood pressure could take the stress of watching. I will be listening to CC.

TheraP

I graduated from the University of Idaho – As for who knew her in college – absolutely no-one!!!!! Not even the professor who signed her approval to graduate. In college the true leaders raise to the top – people know them and like them – and everyone claims to have been their friend – even when they weren’t. And yet – total silence – not a single person admits to remembering her at the U of I or at North Idaho College. The local Paper has put out an all points bullitin for anyone that knew her – and they have come up empty. That says a lot – it tells me that she is a fraud – a con – that she is contrived. If I didn’t see the photo with the Idaho Diploma in her hand, I say it was an outright lie (photo shopped?). Maybe she was honing her skills in those days – figuring out how to sell herself as more than she really was – and her classmates weren’t fooled, didn’t buy it and just avoided her. Who knows. If you question people from the colleges that Barack went to, that Joe Biden went to, that Hillary went to, That any great leader went to, you will find lots of people who knew them , knew that they were different, special, and destined for something big. When do you hear someone say – they just kept to themselves and didn’t make waves — That’s what they say about serial killers!!!!

I knew people at the U of I who were special – everyone knew these people – we would not have been surprised (Well maybe surprised – but not shocked) that one of these people was selected as a VP candidate – But Sarah Palin. Shock isn’t a strong enough sentiment. Even the U of I who has honored her as an Alum in their recruiting info – admits that she “Walked Softly and Left no Tracks”. I for one want my country run by someone special – Someone who left tracks – someone who I know has more brain power, more wisdom, more reasoning power than the rest of us – than the rest of the people in the world they may have to deal with. Maybe I’m eletist, but being the leader of the free world is not bringing the most popular dish to the community picnic – or being the best at chugging a beer.

I can’t even fathom the idea of putting someone out there to lead with the Brain power of John McCain. But his lack of intelligence (5th from the bottom of his class) isn’t his worst trait. John McCain was a fighter pilot – a loner. He thinks his job as president would be to resurrect that role – to be the Maverick – to be the hero. Have you ever worked in a corporation lead by a loner… Well I have. I tried for 3 years to help this leader understand that his job was to make the people beneath him better – to inspire them to do things greater than they ever would without his leadership, because no matter good he was, how hard he worked, he could not do it alone. He thought I was crazy – he told me directly to stop trying to coach him – I was wrong – I left as did anyone else who had the wherewithal to pick up their family and go elsewhere. This is John McCain – the loner – Yes he’s a maverick – but we don’t need a maverick – we need a leader – someone to inspire us – just as the as the best leaders of our generation have. Listen to his convention speech and see how many times he says “I”. You did not hear that from Barack. It is so clear that John McCain believes it is John McCain first – and yet he runs this campaign with the message of “Country First”. What a great place to hide who he really is!!!!!

I used to believe the people of the were smarter – but I watch the tactics of the Republicans and how many people bite, and I realize how wrong I am. I must admit that until this year I always voted Republican. I was always leaned toward the democrats ideology, but I thought I was voting my pocketbook. But I have finally realized I wasn’t voting my pocketbook, I was voting the pocketbook of my Kids and their kids – and I am now so ashamed. I have now realized I was one of those stupid people – I can only hope to somehow redeem myself.

I put my faith this year in the youth of this country – people my age have shown again and again that we don’t deserve the reigns any more. We have left them so many burdens to work through – I only hope we have not delt them a hand so bad that thek can never play it out. Some of us are starting to see, but so many of us are still so very blind!!!!

Re: Alaska dividend

As AKMuckraker mentioned, the checking account of every man, woman, or child who has lived in Alaska for over a year will swell by about $3200 tomorrow. If you are a family of 4, you get $12,800. Everyone in the whole state gets a huge bonus, all on one day!

$1200 of the per person total is supposed to be an “energy rebate” to help people pay for fuel. (The rest is an unusually high permanent fund annual dividend from oil profits.) When Palin first proposed this plan, I remember getting nauseous. Before that, I really hoped our governor was as cool as we wanted her to be. Slaying the Murkowski dragon was huge and we wanted to love her, even though she is Republican! I’m ashamed to say that I was not paying as close attention as AKMuckraker. But I am now…

This rebate is the craziest thing! There is no requirement to spend it on energy. No incentives for cutting consumption. No investment in alternative fuel technology. Nothing. The whole thing is just a big bonanza for retailers who sell big-screen TVs. Come winter, people are still going to go broke trying to pay their insane energy bills. Except for the wealthy people who got the rebate, too–exact same amount as everyone else. Also, no regional distinctions. People where I live (Juneau) can always burn wood and take the bus. People in the Bush pay relatively much much more for energy.

Meanwhile, the state that is handing out this largesse is simultaneously crying poor. The state won’t tap into the oil riches to do its business. Other states really ARE broke! But we truly are awash in oil money.

I volunteer for an organization that serves very poor people and I resent doing the State’s job for free because they refuse to pay people like social workers and foster families a decent living! So we volunteers have to help fill in the huge gaps in service.

And this rebate won’t make my volunteer job any easier. Try telling people who have $0 today and will have $12,800 tomorrow not to drink it, gamble it, or stick it up their noses. Thanks, Sarah.

Please pardon the rant. I think I’ll take my rebate and get drunk tomorrow night.

How long will it be before everyone in the Lower 48 discovers they are supporting that $3000 per Alaska resident payment everytime they
fill the fuel tank of their vehicle and in the federal taxes deducted from their
paycheck every other week? Pork is Alaska’s middle name and it and its residents wouldn’t survive a winter if oil taxes ultimately paid by Lower 48 consumers and their federal taxes dollars didn’t prop up the state government. There isn’t a hell of lot of difference between Alaska and a number of of oil rich nations except the residents of most of the other
oil rich nations have higher high school graduations rates than Alaska.

Driving through suburbs outside Atlanta today, I spotted a church sign advertising its Sunday sermon topic, “Experience isn’t everything.”

Hey neighbor! Which suburb? Don’t tell me…um….Lawrenceville or Alpharetta….gotta be one of those. Although I’m rarely out there….I do remember noticing all the seething mothers who almost ram your car while racing little Brittney to soccer practice.

What’s worse about this refund, the so-called reform is getting this money from the lower 48:

“As if it couldn’t support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950). Its ratio of federal spending received to federal taxes paid ranks third among the 50 states, and in the absolute amount it receives from Washington over and above the amount it sends to Washington, Alaska ranks No. 1.” – Michael Kinsley

wow, just got off the phone with a business associate in RedZoneSoCa and I needed to come back here for a Mudhug. He is one of those who are for Mc only because he doesn’t have time to research and only reads emails sent from his very right friend. Yes, he actually asked if Obama is muslim! I will spare you the gory details but after 45 min he actually said that he probably won’t vote because while he still can’t get it for Obama, he now fears John McCain more. I gave him http://www.votesmart.org and http://www.fivefortyeight.com for a some light reading.

Waxman. I totally agree. At U of I (and the rest of the schools she attended) Palin was unknown. At the Naval Academy McCain was known for his terrible temper. Not only is Obama remembered for his academic career as a college student, he is remembered for his academic career as a college prof. Biden’s college career is nothing to sneeze at either (3 undergrad degrees and a JD). Here’s the catch. Education is an issue in this election. Alaska’s graduation rate is deplorable. The Chance of a kid in Alaska graduating from college is slim. Since when is being smart a bad thing? Since when is trying to improve yourself with a formal education a bad thing?

[[ looked at the Truth-o-meter site – it’s interesting. They (correctly) gave the book list a ‘Liar liar pants on fire’ reading, but I still think it was a McCain person who started that email going.]]

MissKae, I think that is an incorrect statement by truth-o-meter because it attempts to take a real-life situation and limit it to one point.

It s true tosay that he librarian wasn’t given a book list.

There is no proof that Palin didn’t have one. She just didn’t give one to the librarian.

If the librarian had indicated she was open to censoring books, a book list may have been forthcoming. There would be no reason for Palin to give a book list to someone who said she would not censor books.

Even if a book list wan’t given, the fact that Palin, the librarian’s superior, having far more power in the relationship (Palin could fire the librarian, but the librarian could not fire the mayor), used both the question about removing books from the library and the subsequent firing of the librarian when the librarian refused as intimidation. The fact that she rehired the librarian does not negate the fact that she intimidated her.

Uganik homesteader: I will overlook your rather judgmental comment about high school graduation rates. But you should keep in mind that our normal dividend, usually around $1000, doesn’t begin to offset the crazy cost of living up here. Every single thing we eat, buy at a store, or pump into a gas tank (no refineries here), has to be barged up. And salaries are WAY lower than where I moved here from (Seattle). Our minimum wage is ridiculous. So Alaskans are definitely hurting. Which was my point, actually.

John Henry: You make a good point but just to keep things clear and fact-based; the dividend comes directly out of our permanent fund, which is completely separate from any pork dollars that come from Washington.

Lincoln’s thoughts on God’s will: “Men are not flattered by being shown that there has been a difference of purpose between the Almighty and them.”
– Abraham Lincoln, Letters to Thurlow Weed, March 14, 1865

I found this while searching on ‘Lincoln + gods wil’: Both sides in debates over war, abortion, gay rights, taxes, and more cite the authority of scripture, religious tradition, and communication from God as part of the basis for their positions. They can’t all be right and it is arguably unlikely that any of them are.

Thanks for the insight – I knew there was something fishy (haha!) about the way they put that up, and it is because it’s too simplistic. Your post is the first I’ve read that points out that SP probably did have a list of some type in mind. (I haven’t read all the posts here, even though I’m trying!) Sandy Beach, things are expensive everywhere, however this looks very bad to people living in the Lower 48. They are supporting Alaskan lifestyles by their purchases at the gas pump and federal tax payments.. That’s wrong and don’t be surprised if all this increased scrutiny that dear Sarah has brought upon the state doesn’t have many folks in CONUS start taking a very dim view of that lifestyle. Now it only a matter of time.

If Alaska can afford to give everyone $3269 which is then used to buy big ticket items, why do they need nearly $200 million in funds from the federal trough? How can Alaskans be independent when us Lower 48’ers are paying so much for your infrastructure, ice arena’s, etc?

Right, the point is why not spend the permanent fund on your infrastructure projects rather than taking money from American taxpayers. If she did that, you’d be receiving less of a check. Right?

Bingo. It is the “Myth” of Alaska. We’re all Independent and people living off the land. The last Pioneers!! Nothing could be further from the truth for most of us.
Alaska, as a state, is completely dependent on the public trough. The state is completely dysfunctional and irresponsible from a financial standpoint. It is absolutely embarassing to see the faces of Outsiders when then learn what
goes on around here for fiscal policy.

I don’t think Sarah Palin will be comfortable in Alaska. She is obviously unethical, and as the current ethics investigation unfolds, there will be other charges that arise. There is going to be one–perhaps IRS charges–that will take her down.

Let’s see what a “Babe” she is without make-up, hairstylist, and sporting an orange jumpsuit across her double-wide ass.

Wired Differently

So, the Charles Gibson interview was really just a pissing contest between the Republican handlers who briefed SP and MSM. The handlers did their best to give her language (even if it was just a few basic phrases, ‘ou est la toilette, s’il vous plait?’)to cover the bases. But Charlie, his reputation at stake, had to come up with a trick essay question. (I’ve got it! I’ll ask her about the Bush Doctrine. heh heh heh)

Okay, grist for the mill. Kind of fun, gratifying to see her exposed for the dumb hick she is. But the real story tonight is the astonishing interview of McCain on the Maine news program. This is the guy who’s actually running for president! And for a minute I thought someone had switched Johnny Mac’s and Sarah’s brains! She’s a joke (albeit a really scary joke), but he’s losing it FAST.

But even scarier, did anyone listen to NPR this evening and the piece on the good folks of York, PA? For them, it’s all about race. Which does not bode well for Senator Obama.

So, the only hope lies with that big ol’ group of as-yet unaccounted for demographic, the one my three kids are in. My daughter, a college senior, signed on for a position in the campus Democrats group today. The band Death Cab for Cutie is encouraging voter registration with the promise of a free concert on the campus that signs up the most voters

At least, Palin is a true American, a doer than a talker like Obama. How could American vote for Obama if he does not respect our national song. Check out this website: http://www.newswithviews.com/Ryter/jon212.htm. Hillary Clinton and others placed their hands on their chests when national anthem was played but Obama did not and just looked cold. He hates our song and flag and he should be our president. Americans are falling into a talker traps which Hitler used to do to attract the crowds. I don’t want a president who does not respect the country national anthem or has a tight relationship with extreemist muslims.

Smith, you are an ignorant fool! Everyone knows that Obama is no Muslim and that he does put his hand over his heart for the pledge of Allegiance (NO ONE puts their hand ion their heart during the National Anthem, you fool!) Stop making stuff up or should I say listening to lies and spreading them. You aren’t fooling anyone except for a few people just a few brain cells short of brain dead ( and you can include yourself in that!) I will take a chance on a Harvard educated open minded senator with a good record in the Senate, than I would on uneducaded liars like McCain and Sarah Palin. the ignorance of people like smith who misuse the term “American” scares me. if palin/mccain are elected, these “true Americans” will allow our loved ones to continue to die in iraq, women could lose the right to make decisions about our own bodies which would lead to numerous injuries and deaths, our environment would suffer irreconcilable damage, the minimum wage will remain at an UNLIVABLE rate which mccain condones, the economy will continue to suffer as will working class Americans and smith cares about a SONG? are you kidding with this? it’s utterly amazing that you have such disregard and lack of compassion for your fellow Americans. Your position is the antithesis of what American means in my book.

SMITH: Maybe Obama didn’t place his hand over his heart because, like many others in the USA he was taught to STAND AT ATTENTION WITH ARMS AT HIS SIDES during the National Anthem. (And to look serious — which is a lot different than “cold.”)

Has anyone noticed that the Republicans very carefully only allow a controlled died in the wool Republican crowd? You generally have to have tickets to get into a Republican rally here in the lower 48. Did anyone also notice that the size of a Republican rally can increase exponentially when reported on the Bush controlled news media? I would like to know the real number of that Pro-Palin crowd. Did anyone report that before the McCain Republican Party Convention, they were arresting “suspected” anti-McCain organizers and arrested reporters that were on sight because they were taking pictures? Bush has had such a tight rein on the media that we probably will never know the truth about what’s been happening in Washington until he gets booted out in November. (Is this something he learned from the history of Germany?) McCain and Palin will definitely follow in his footsteps if they win and we will never hear the truth from the media then. Shades of “Big Brother” policies! OBAMA FOR CHANGE AND HONESTY!

With real issues being monumental in this election, I prefer to stick with the smaller issues.

No. 1. Sarah’s wardrobe sucks because she does not have the elan to wear it in the first place. The choices were/are tacky. She would not look classy in anything. Just because.

No. 2. Snowmobiles are snowmobiles. Who the hell ever heard of a snow machine? Even in Thief River Falls, MN….. there has never been a reference to a snow machine. BTW, that is the home of the Polaris people who manufacture them. It would be great to NOT be from any place that refers to snowmobiles as snow machines and wears weird freakin earrings and awful glasses.

We MN,SD,ND people have a corner on the snowmobile market. We make them. Other than that, what a great state sans Palin. And great people, also.
