Palin’s Lawyer is at it Again.

11 09 2008

Investigator, Stephen Branchflower

Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein

Palin’s lawyer is at it again… Remember him? Thomas Van Flein?  Last time I wrote about him, I talked about my irresistable urge to pronounce his name with an accent.  It’s such a good villain name.  Well now, not only am I typing his name with an accent, but in light of his new shenanigans, I’ll add a thin twirly moustache.  So what have you been up to now….Van Fleinnn??

After his last attempt to derail the ethics investigation into Palin’s firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan falied, he’s trying again.  This time, instead of Senator Hollis French, he’s going after retired prosecutor turned special investigator Stephen Branchflower.

“Steve Branchflower is a highly respected prosecutor and public servant,” said Sen. Hollis French, D-Anchorage. “If there were wrongs committed, he will find them. If there were not, he has the professional experience and good judgment to say so.”

Apparently Mr. Van Flein has another opinion.  He says that both Hollis French, and Stephen Branchflower are friends of Walt Monegan, but didn’t say upon what he was basing that statement.  He also requested copies of all emails having to do with the hiring of Branchflower, and emails among the legislative council to Branchflower and French.

In July, Palin said she did nothing wrong and that she welcomed an investigation.  Now, after becoming McCain’s running-mate, and with the outcome of the investigation set to come on October 31, just 5 days before election day, any roadblock will do.  No more welcome wagon.

So far, the Legislature has successfully dodged attempts to delay the investigation.  Will they be able to fend off Van Flein’s latest diabolical scheme?  Stay tuned.

Do you never sleep? How do you keep on top of this stuff? I can see you have a vitual swam of supports and now have us waiting breathlessly to get the next tidbit of news from up north. It’s taken me hours to scroll through these comments and follow the links to those that grab my attention. TMI…and so little time. Keep up the great work. The winner of the election on 11/4 left, right or independent will have much to thank you for as do we all.

I really hope the Palin investigation comes out before 11/4, though me thinks all those that need to be giving evidence might mysteriously get bogged down out there on the actual mudflats and not be found until weeks, months or years after the election, or need that they have duties with big severance checks or bonuses that take them off to higher places.

Keep those hip boots up and watch over both left and right shoulders, if I could I’d send you a Marine Regiment such to keep you out of harmsway, protecting freedom of speech is a biggy in my book.

Maybe Van Fleinn didn’t get McCain’s memo about the importance of transparency and accountability in his campaign. (Surely he’s holding his running mate to his same laudable standard.) As soon as he gets it, Van Fleinn will cease with these tactics. I know! It’ll be the same day Palin holds a press conference or appears on Meet The Press.

This sounds a lot like Nixon’s team on Watergate. They kept trying to dismiss it as a second rate burglary, and then tried to discredit the congressional investigation with claims of executive privilege and a variety of distracters. Maybe the situation is the same at a deeper level with a lot more in Palin’s own emails that they like to distract attention from. Has anybody sued under the Freedom of Information Act to get the ones that her husband was copied in on?

They are trying to keep Mike Wooten from the spotlight.

Wooten lived in PalinWorld for a long time, he knows a lot but has incentive to stay quiet now.

Somebody needs to get him to spill what he knows.

I know this much:

Sarah Palin was there when Wooten shot the moose. She handed him the gun.

She allowed her kids to ride in Wooten’s car when he was drunk.

She allowed her kids to be in the Wooten house when Wooten and Palin’s sister were physically fighting.

What a great Mom.

Note – It was actually Sarah’s Sister Molly (Wooten’s wife) who was with him when he shot the moose. It was she who held the permit. She had second thoughts and didn’t want to shoot it, so Wooten did. AKM

So why wasn’t Sarah Palin arrested for choild endangerment, or negelect?

Because she speaks in tongues? Because she replaced the Police Chief of Wasilla with someone who is more “supportive” (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil)?

Why is this criminal Palin walking free?

Astounding….! ? ! !

I have just been watching Larry King (delayed here in Oz)….I had to leave the room !

Someone asked why we in other parts of the world are so interested in this US election….It is because what happens in the US affects all of us, particularly in the western world.

My son is in the military.

America you have the opportunity to do what is right….get it right.

Go Obama/Biden

Great blogging! As a non-American I find it all the more fascinating because it affords a view of the nitty-gritty of the system.

As Zim points out, this election affects us all, not least those of us living in the Middle East. But I have also lived in the US and the Americans I have come to know and love deserve better.

Good luck to us all!

Looks like God is mad at Little Bush again. God is aiming Hurricane Ike straight at Crawford Texas.

God is getting mad at Alaska too. What happened to all the ice and tundra? All those dead trees that have drowned in tundra melt turned bog are evidence somehting is wrong.

When was our last really big earthquake? Seismic activity around the world has been increasing in correlation to global temperature rise. Remember 1964 ???

Another problem is that as the ice melts and oceans rise, so does the pressure they exert on the earth’s mantle. The sheer weight of the additional water volume is squeezing the earth’s mantle and things are starting to MOVE.

I don’t know where I’m a gonna go when the Vol-cane-o blows!

oh, and one last thing till I next rush on back here. a favourite quote, ever so in keeping with the Fierce Urgency of Now, and to me beautifully descriptive of all of you fighting the good fight:

There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part, you can’t even passively take part, and you’ve got to put your bodies on the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop! And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all! –Mario Savo

Weird isn’t it? People for “reform” and “transparancy” seem to not be so much for reform and transparency, when they are under investigation for wrong-doing.

I suspect that the independent investigator is going to continue to investigate, and issue his report when he said he would.

I suspect that the good people of Alaska, once again are throwing money down the drain by paying Mr. Van Fleinn, to try to protect the Governor against accountability, in abusing the power of her office.

Genie is out of the bottle.

This is getting creepier and creepier. I went to bed last evening full of thoughts about many comments made yesterday. The one that is pulling on me was from a poster who stated there are several far right groups out there who are now proclaiming Sarah and John as “potential Saints” and calling her “Sister” and “Mother” Sarah. Does anyone have links to these? I keep getting routed to a lot of these neo-con, extreme sites which, frankly, are so scary that I want to bury my head in the sand and just pretend that everyone believes in the sacredness of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Has America really gone that extreme right?

On This Day: An American tragedy made into a political commodity

Olbermann: Republicans have hijacked 9/11

In a Special Comment, Keith Olbermann talks about the politicization of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, especially by the Bush administration and the GOP who use the event to terrify Americans into thinking the only safe option is to vote Republican “or this will happen again and you will die.” Full story

VIDEO

Keith puts the Truth of what 9/11 has turned into, not only as a political tool but a reach for extreme power, throwing out All the Good Will being shown and offered from Around The World, including from the Innocent People of the Countries We Now Occupy! Where we could have joined forces with the World and used all that resources to go after the Criminal Elements of Criminal Terrorism we instead have Fanned the Fires of Hatred and Created more who are and will be bent on acts of Criminal Terrorism for years to come, Blowbacks a Bitch!!

@JimStaro –

Jim, thanks for the post. I lost one of my dear college roommates on this day. I watched as her husband wandered around, and then went back to CT to get a picture of her, and then started just wandering. It was one of the saddest things and has left an indelible imprint on my memory. I’m with Keith. His show last night was terrific – my favorite part was at the very end when he looked straight into the camera and challenged McCain to “..come forward with the information you have on how to catch bin Laden…” and that if he didn’t, he was “…aiding and abetting…” a War Criminal. Go Keith. (sigh)

On another note, do you have a link to any of the Veterans Groups who are trying to work for Obama in Tennessee? I think my dad my have a heart attack before this is all over he’s so mad by the blatant mis-use of the military and of Veterans. He’s hopping mad. “This is not what we fought for.” “This is not why my buddies died.” He’s beside himself, so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Energy to all on 9/11 day. A day out of time then and now, in some ways. A friend worked at the WSJ office, next door to the towers, and he was one of those people running around covered in ashes. He was a foreign national working here as a journalist and subsequently became depressed and went back to his native country. He’s alive, though, because he was late to work. THere are so many stories like this.

How much is all this costing? Sheesh, I can’t believe the deep pockets on the Republican side. Any taxpayer dollars or is it all party and donor money? It’s really ridiculous, and overkill.

That investigation should be moved up, I agree. Four days for people to digest the information (October 31st is a Friday) during a holiday and a weekend is not enough for it to sink it. We’ll take what we can get but…Plus, what is it with the Friday release of important but unflattering information? That is a Bush administration special.

Wondering what Bill Clinton and Obama will discuss during the NY trip these next few days.

Watch your back, AKMuckraker, with all those lipsticked pigs, pitbulls, moose and wolves around. If ya know what I mean.

The WSJ has an article today about an ethics adviser warning Palin in July to apologize for mishandling troopergate.

MSM articles are now finally starting to show up. It feels like the tide is starting to turn.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An informal adviser who has counseled Gov. Sarah Palin on ethics issues urged her in July to apologize for her handling of the dismissal of the state’s public safety commissioner and warned that the matter could snowball into a bigger scandal.
[Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, right, sits with John Cyr, executive director for the Public Safety Employee Association, to answer questions about the ‘Troopergate’ investigation.]
Associated Press
Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten (right) answers questions about the ‘Troopergate’ investigation on Tuesday.

He also said, in a letter reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, that she should fire any aides who had raised concerns with the chief over a state trooper who was involved in a bitter divorce with the governor’s sister.

In the letter, written before Sen. John McCain picked the Alaska governor as his running mate, former U.S. Attorney Wevley Shea warned Gov. Palin that “the situation is now grave” and recommended that she and her husband, Todd Palin, apologize for “overreaching or perceived overreaching” for using her position to try to get Trooper Mike Wooten fired from the force.

good morning mudflaters,

A quick 7 years, with all the pain still there, with approximately 4100 more Americans killed in the name of 9/11 – thousands injured for life -USA reputation destroyed-thousands of Iraqis killed – other troops from other countries dead.

Meanwhile Bin Laden – in a cave sipping coffee – and John McCain says he knows how to get him, but isn’t telling anyone? Disgusting bs.

Today would be a good day to donate to any organization that helps people anywhere. Time to show our humanity in a form that reflects our feelings not our fear. War is not the answer. It wasn’t the answer then and it isn’t the answer still.

Hi all!

I was so hopeful and so sure that Obama will win based on his integrity and determination to set America on a different and honourable path.

Until yesterday. This palindrama has been a dangerous distraction. First it was Michigan (? or was it Missouri…a couple of articles back there’s a link and post) and now we hear that the same thing is happening in FLorida. Guys…this is where the DANGER is and I’m sure they are aware…but let’s not assume so if anyone knows how to communicate to the DNC and Obama campaign please alert them.

States trying to disenfranchise voters, in Michigan disqualifying voters who have recently lost their homes and in FLorida, new voters.

Guys, you can’t let all the hardwork that you’ve been doing canvassing and registering new voters go to waste….this is where the election could be lost. I am confident from the EV polls and the number of new voters registering that Obama is winning…let’s not have the Repugs take it on a technicality??

Methinks Jena has her pulse on the situation. How long before McCain gets tired of being 2nd seat in HIS run for the presidency? Does he really believe it will be any different if he actually gets into the Oval Office? He’ll probably have to crawl under that table just to get a seat at that table.

As to Van Flein’s requests for certain types of documents, I’m not sure he’s entitled to the entire bunch while the investigation is active. He might be able to wrestle free any documents which show his client’s innocence, but he’d need to be able to identify those specific documents. Problem is, it’s not clear whether this is just an investigation or a prosecution.

But I think in either case, most, if not all, of the documents he’s trying to get are covered by some type of attorney-client privilege, attorney work product, or trial prep privilege. The burden is upon him to show that he’s entitled to those documents – which he appears not to have defined except in very broad terms – but at this point, it does not appear he’s properly laid out his case. All he’s done to this point is attack the investigators and others who are trying to get to the bottom of this sordid mess instead of laying out any facts which are beneficial to his client. But then, perhaps those facts simply do not exist. And since Sarah Palin appears to have bit too many of the hands who helped her political career, there may not be any sympathetic ears to the legalistic bleatings of her lawyer.

Since I can safely say I won’t be the only one posting quotes for encouragement on this blog, here are a few from my favorite, Sir Winston Churchill (who was no doubt an elitist because he used words with too many syllables):

“Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.” (unfortunately too, too true.)”

To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.”

“Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.” (where the neocons went wrong – they thought they were in control)

“It’s not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”

“One ought never to turn one’s back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half.”

“All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.”

(All found via http://www.quotationspage.com – which is an awesome, awesome resource for quotes on a variety of subjects.) 🙂

Situation was grave then….and it’s even worse now for the rest of us! God Forbid this woman is elected!

P.S. I’ve been calling this the Plain/McCain ticket for days now. She has completely taken over, and he’s fine with that! John McCain was on TV last night and my teenage boy said, “He looks like a corpse. Is he dying?’

Hi Catherine –

I apologize up front that they are about tyranny, but with all these scary sites coming up about how the far right wants to start Armageddon (yikes), they just seem appropriate:

“If tyranny and opression come to this land it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. ” – James Madison

[[ I really hope the Palin investigation comes out before 11/4…]]

GJ, because of mail-in voting, it has to be at least a month before 11/4 if the investigation findings are to have any real impact. By 11/15 at the latest, it will be nearly impossible to significantly change the outcome of the vote.

It’s because of that @!**%$!!! mail-in voting. There are so many people now who can’t be bothered to schlep to the poll–to make it clear, I’m not talking about a state where you HAVE to vote by mail, or people who have physical disabilities, etc.– on voting day that they make their decision sometimes MONTH in advance and mail in their vote.

In the California Dem Primary, so many people voted by mail that it changed the outcome of the primary! In the beginning of the primary (for months before), if you remember, Hillary had annointed herself the “inevitable candidate.” The media lemmings immediately started repeating this ad nauseum. So when those early votes went in, the vast majority were for Hillary. California has always been a very Clinton-friendly state, so people voted based on WHAT THEY KNEW AT THE TIME THEY VOTED.

The problem, of course, is that they really didn’t know all that much about Hillary Clinton for real, and they knew even less about Barak Obama.

By the time our actual voting day came around, there were a huge number of people who were cursing and wished they could take back their mail-in votes. Polling after the CA primary indicated that nearly 50% of the people wished they would have not mailed in their vote because they would have voted differently, and most of them would have voted for Obama.

Californians loved Hillary because they really didn’t know her. We supported the Clintons during Bill’s Dick-Gates, and many of us felt sorry for Hillary and admired her for staying the course during that time–and were happy she was in the Senate, even though she had spent more time voting with the Republicans than standing up for Democrats.

Once people got a load of her on the campaign trail, especially the New Psycho-Bill, opinions changed. Obviously, people changed their minds in other states, too.

In California, we had moved up our primary so we could “play a bigger role” in the primary, since the outcome of the earlier states clearly impacts the outcome in other states, and sometimes, by the time other states’ primaries are scheduled to roll around, the primary is a done deal.

When Hollis French, bowing to the pressure from Palin and her fancy-pants lawyer, Van Flein, announced that the investigation results would be announced earlier than the previously scheduled week before the election (this time-table having been established before anyone, including Palin and McCain, knew she had a dog’s chance in hell of being picked as McCain’s VP), I was happy because I didn’t think that a week REALLY had a chance to get disseminated before the election.

But then I remembered the mail-in votes, and realized that the investigation results would have to come out at least 6 weeks in advance to have a major impact on the election. It will have some positive impact, although very little.

And it’s all because of those mothereffing mail-in votes!

I don’t vote by mail because I’m an old-school political activist. I cherish voting, including the rituals that surround it. It’s how I was raised. On election day you get there as early as possible to vote, you do your sacred job as an American citizen, receiving your tacky little sticker that says “I voted!” then you go do your election volunteer work for the day, then when the polls are closed, you go to one of our local watering holes, wearing your sticker, to get your free drink, then party/watch election returns.

Unfortunately, to many Americans the voting rituals of Election Day aren’t so important, so they do what’s easy–VOTE MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME!

Voting by mail so far ahead of election day may have been reasonable in the past, but no more. Because of the internet and a 24/7 news cycle, we find out PLENTY between when the votes are mailed in and election day. Sometimes–as in the California primary–there was significant early-mailin-voting remorse, and I believe those mail-in votes changed the outcome of the Democratic primary.

So if we are going to work for Obama (or anyone else) before the election, we have to start in earnest RIGHT NOW. We have to give our money RIGHT NOW. We have to sign up for phone banks RIGHT NOW. Our major effort has to be in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

Some New Jersey voters have been told that they are not registered to vote because the name on their driver’s license or state id does not match the name on the voter registration lists. Those who have inquired about this have been told this is in error and, if they are already registered, they will be able to vote.

We have the so-called “Patriot” Act to thank for this nonsense, folks.

@antsy “What is Palin gets dropped from the ticket?”

Palin won’t get dropped. People in the conservative states love her. I have never seen or heard so little regard for due process. People are convinced that this MUST be the “powerful Demo machine” at work to try and “discredit” sweet sister Sarah. There is very little fact gathering any more, and people don’t care. They want to be spoon-fed. They want cute sound bites.

Dems have to stop thinking everyone is as educated and as committed as they are to get the facts. Dems should have learned this by now. How many elections have been lost to people less qualified because Repubs ran a campaign of sound bites and fear?

2000 – Gore (well. this one was stolen)
2004 – Kerry
2008 – Obama

WAKE UP, DEMS! Get quick sound bites that reach the emotion. I know this goes out of character for all of the above three, but at this point, just running on the issues is not going to help much. WAKE UP. HELLO – ANYBODY OUT THERE?

If I was their media manager, I would be running short ad like this with that wonderful Ronald Reagan quote at the end: Are you better off now than you were four years ago?

Potential topics:

1) Want more of the same? McCain believes in a proactive strike on Iran. Span over the number killed
2) Want more of the same? McCain’s record for women’s issues is a zero OVER THE SPAN OF HIS 26 YEAR CAREER IN THE SENATE – don’t mind the talking head he’s brought along to distract you
3) Want more of the same? McCain has attacked your Constitution and Bill of Rights no less than 7 times over the past 8 years as he sided with Bush and in fact, was his “mouthpiece” to sponsor the bills. MORE THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT OVER THE PAST 200 YEARS.
4) Want more of the same? McCain’s first tenure in the Senate included the infamous Keating 5 which cost taxpayers $2B+ – Fannie and Freddie are just the start. Do you want someone like McCain (pan over the Keating 5 team and lost dollars) watching over the subprime crisis? (have McCain’s clip: “…don’t know much about the economy…”)

I don’t know who is accountable for the ads, but they are not reaching the average American. Get on the OFFENSIVE. NOW.

Also from Larry’s site, he posted this Sept 7 prior to the ruling on Branchflower:

“Rather than posting all of the facts in this article, I want to point you to a couple of different pages. One is a blogger who has performed very thorough research on the subject of Troopergate. Governor Palin And ‘That Trooper Investigation’: A Full Disclosure has the most extensive list of facts and sources that I have found anywhere. Hat tip to Ridgeliner for posting them for us to see. I urge you to take time to read the article I have linked to. It is full of information and facts on the investigation.

I also want you to watch the raw video feed of a press conference Governor Palin held on August 13, 2008. Her accusers would have us believe she has not been forthcoming with the information needed by the special investigator, Steve Branchflower, to conduct his probe. Nothing could be further from the truth and I believe the press conference proves it.

Governor Palin’s Press Conference

My main concern right now is that the investigation be conducted in a timely manner and not be used for political purposes. The investigation also needs to be impartial, which I also fear may be in jeopardy. ”

Good morning Mudpals,

You are my sanity in a storm of insanity! Of course the Florida BS goes through just when the polls show us as purple. I have sent this out to all my FL contingent.

As I sit here with tears during the 9/11 rememberance I recall how we as Americans came together and comforted each other. No one asked what your party affiliation was, what your religion was, what your nationality or sexuality was. We were Americans and that was good enough. In NYC, everyone was so caring to each other like nothing I have ever seen. We cared about each other as human beings. It was the crux of the conversation I had with a gentleman last night. He was an Israeli who is now a US citizen and he was going to vote for McCain. With the help of my Mudflat community, I was more equipped than ever to articulate point after point. I could answer his questions about positions on Israel, Ms. Palin’s stance (with lies debunked as well) and how a McCain pick would affect this country. I patiently listen to his story and noted that he actually was an Obama person but just didn’t know it. His only source of info was local news. I calmly but passionately shared Obama’s positions on various issues such as taxes for small business, health care etc. and was able to share the McCain counterpoint. I never said “you must vote for Obama” instead choosing to suggest he “do some homework” to make a grounded decision on what really would be best for this country and all Americans. He thanked me and said he would do just that because now he was an Undecided leaning Obama. I offered my email address and cell phone if he had any questions or just wanted to talk further. I realized that we really need to just talk calmly, intelligently and most importantly, stay issue-oriented. I did not say a word about the circus side show, staying solidly on issues that are directly affecting his life. And I think it worked. He thanked me and said he was grateful for my passion for my country. Because I was knowledgeable and had real information he listened and will hopefully see things in a new light. If each one of us just talked to a few people we could make a real difference. I have my work cut out for me here in Florida and I would welcome other Floridians to work with me. I guess that would make us all “community organizers”;)! I’m cool with that! Godspeed to all on this somber day. AKMud, you always have a refuge here in Miami Beach, just let me know.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was very fortunate, all of the people I knew in WTC that day made it out without physical harm. I remember the first images I saw after the 1st plane hit, I’d just gotten up and was channel surfing, I saw it as a fleeting image and thought “Wow, someone has done another disaster movie using WTC.” We were just coming off of movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact destroying NYC and Paris etc. When I finally settled on CNN I realized my mistake and spent the hours in total shock. I’d only been in both NYC and DC days before, working on my dissertation. About two weeks after the tragedy, I took a train from DC to NYC… I decided to sit in the same car with some fire fighters in full dress uniform who were taking the train up. See, there was absolutely no security getting on the train that day. None. I bought my ticket at a Kiosk and no one talked to me until the train was in motion… I figured if something horrible happened the fire fighters would be the safest people to be with. Coming in to NY, you could still see smoke rising from the end of the island. I didn’t go downtown that day — I was still researching at Columbia, so I headed uptown from the train station. I was amazed at how many people made eye contact on the subway and on the streets that day… something that rarely if ever happened before 9/11. We were a changed world that day, and none so changed as New Yorkers.

Blessed be.

Condolences to all us Americans in memory of the tragedy of 9/11. We as a nation all mourn the losses of that day. Still today we mourn the losses that are still mounting indirectly because of the attack at the hands of the young mostly Saudi, Jordanian and Egyptian radicals. Funny, no Iraqis nor Iranians were on those planes.

Lately the “noise” about lipstick and childrens predator protection programs has drowned out the Palin investigation, the deficit spending, no real healthcare for 1/3 of the nation, Ollie North lying and spying in Afghanistan as a Faux reporter, congressional subpoenas being ignored, McCain shamelessly lying about his not so stellar career, more leases given to big oil, corporate media propaganda….

Substitute ‘person’ for ‘man’, ‘them’ for ‘man’ and you will get a sense that the Founding Fathers were onto something:

“The process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of
President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent
degree endowed with the requisite qualifications. Talents for low
intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to
elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require
other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the
esteem and confidence of the whole Union…”

Obama issued a morning statement, recalling that on Sept. 11, 2001, “Americans across our great country came together to stand with the families of the victims, to donate blood, to give to charity, and to say a prayer for our country,” he said. “Let us renew that.”

He included what seemed a subtle dig — though at President Bush, not McCain — with a reference to the work Bush is leaving unfinished. “Let us remember that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 are still at large, and must be brought to justice,” Obama said

You’re Sane, Barack. They’re Desperate

11 Sep 2008 11:20 am

Just a word about the usual excrescence from Karl Rove this morning. Obama knows this lipstick thing is a cynical, knowingly dishonest attempt to push the news cycle one more day into triviality before Palin has to actually face real scrutiny, and we have our first chance to see whether she is who she says she is. It’s a desperate tactic to run out the clock or to find a way to navigate the now-tsunami of evidence that Sarah palin is unfit for the vice-presidency on account of her total lack of knowledge or expertise in foreign affairs, the thinnness and extremism and recklessness of her public record as mayor and governor, and the obvious and most important fact that she clearly cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

Obama mustn’t let these schoolyard tactics unbalance him. He hasn’t in the slightest, so far, mind you, a feat of astonishing mental and psychological calm. My advice for what it’s worth: Hang in. The facts are on your side and the issues are overwhelmingly in your favor. They’re trying to force you to blink. Don’t. Hysteria will end at some point.

Patience and steel. Patience and steel.

I agree. We who fought for ERA — where are we now? And what has happened to a generation of women? Now the good news is my step-daughter’s generation is stepping up again — well, ok my step-daughter is stepping up — she grew up in Idaho and went to a college just outside of NYC — a college that many of the Kennedy women went to … she was appalled when no one cared about the elections, no one tried to register to vote in a school known for its political science and international studies departments. She’s organized voter registrations and managed to pump up her friends and now finds herself in the position of not being in the US for the election (she’s going on a study abroad this year). She has been told that the state of Idaho doesn’t count absentee votes unless there is a recount. I can hardly believe this is true and I can’t verify it. If it is true it is as horrifying as the voter roll purges going on. It amounts to the dirtiest word in political science: dis-en-franchise-ment.

Here’s Joe Klein over at Swampland on Time. Joe’s done a 180 on McCain this year. He started out being sure he would run an honorable campaign because he’s honorable.

A new rule here: Rather than do the McCain campaign’s bidding by wasting space on Senator Honor’s daily lies and bilge–his constant attempts to divert attention from substantive issues–I’m going to assume that others will spend more than enough time on the sewage that Steve Schmidt is shoveling and, from now on, try to stick to the issues.

Tell the Palin “Truth Squad” to have the Governor tell the truth. Like Wev Shea stated in his letter, if she had apologized back in July, this would not have turned into this full blown scandal. Time for the media to really stand up and tell her that it is time to come clean and stop fighting. The real victims in all of this Wooten mess are the Wooten/McCann children.

I’m guessing:

I expect the implicit suggestion is that it might be grounds for impeachment. But unless there were a specific crime imbedded within Troopergate, I don’t expect abuse of power is a felony. After all, it’s those with power they can abuse that write the laws that determine what’s a felony.

Lola,

My understanding is that the result would not be that bad, probably a formal rebuke or something like that. If she had just come out and said she made a mistake, was trying to help my family, please forgive me this would have gone away in a flash. By fighting she is giving critics the chance to dig up anything they want.

As Repubs know this is a battle for time. Hold off until the election. Might work if she does not piss off the judge and legislature with the tactics

Most convictions of govt officials (see Watergate for ex) are for obstruction of justice and perjury. And those are real, you can do time in prison for them. (this is why the Scooter Libby trial was not trivial). It is also why subpoenas are so important: you have to testify under oath. This is why those involved in Troopergate are now really scared and lawyering up. Van Fleinn is playing a risky game—if he ticks off the Legislature (and they are not yet fully owned by McCain), they might just subpoena Palin. That results in delays and so on, but really raises the profile and stench of the whole case. She is going to wish she had settled up months ago.

Weird isn’t it? People for “reform” and “transparancy” seem to not be so much for reform and transparency, when they are under investigation for wrong-doing.

Miemaaw/b> makes and EXCELLENT point! The Democrats, media and all people who care should be using this. Anything else, in the absence of hard evidence or a conclusion, has been and will continue to be used to make the Democrats look like they’re slandering but this a very valid argument.

If they represent transparency and reform, then why are they blocking the investigation? And by the same token re: transparency, why isn’t she speaking to the press? (Okay, that one’s easy to spin — she’s not ready — but it’s still an argument that can be used to apply pressure.)

I think that there are a lot of people who are just incapable of admitting that they are not absolutely right in every instance. I think Bush is plagued by it (which is why he has insisted on continuing with failed policies and actions long after they should have been abandoned and why he is incapable of compromise). I also think that it’s why Palin didn’t take Shea’s advice in July and early August. Never admit that your wrong, that your not completely perfect and wonderful in every respect. It’s arrogance, plain and simple (or palin and simple, as the case may be).

11 09 2008

It’s a war against information. The McCain team knows that if the media do their job and give Palin the same scrutiny that any candidate for high office must endure, she will collapse. Whether that will happen, or whether the press will be cowed by the GOP into doubting its own raison d’être, remains to be seen. Palin will emerge from her televisual purdah at the end of this week, when she’ll face Charles Gibson, the ABC anchor who has not won much praise lately for hard-hitting journalism. The Clinton-Obama debate that he moderated (along with George Stephanopoulos) set new standards for vacuity, with nearly an hour devoted to such non-topics as the iconology of flag lapel pins. Rick Hertzberg, the indispensable analyst at the New Yorker, called it “something akin to a federal crime”.

Ok, I’m putting together a 54 day count down calendar, anyone care to join me with a list of what needs doing today to Stand up for the change we can believe in?

I started my day putting out voter registration info, as well as gathering more info on absentee voting, here in ID ballots have to be mailed in 25 days before 11/4. So get those votes in by 10/10 a good day to change the direction of the world.

I’ll be off in a few for the Wold Day of Prayer (Peace) rally, where I will doing “Wellness Calls.” I just checked my email and got a notice from the Presidents Prayer Team View the entire update on our website at http://www.presidentialprayerteam.org

Check out the picture of Mother Saha in the corner box…there goes the seperation of church and state.

Tomorrow I’ll be working with the local Assistance Living Centers back on the adsentee ballots, and trying to put togather a Women’s Center reunion, yes I started the first Women’s Center in ID. “After which I will be working with local Dem’s office to see why it is never staff and the doors are locked up tight. Then I’m going to see if I can get some folks there for a Press Conference on our plans to turn Idaho Purple. Goal to get our local TV station interns to do a piece that hits the MSM, they could use that on there resumes.

Got any other ideas?

Maybe she’s still just small town naive not yet assimilated to big time national Repub-shenanigans. Maybe the Republican machine doing her very fast makeover don’t get it. An elected official’s attorney is the voice of that elected official. It may be one step removed, but it is still the voice of that official, following that official’s directives.

It looks like Van Flein is extending the Palin arm of abuse of office to the folks conducting the investigation. She just cannot stop. If she is truly, honestly welcoming an investigation she will back the truck (or would that be helicopter?) up, take her claws out of it and cooperate with whatever they ask, whenever they ask for it. Anything less than that speaks volumes on her ethics.

Senator Cleland served in the U.S. Senate from 1997 until 2003. An Army Captain, he was severely wounded fighting in Viet Nam. After recovering from his injuries he was elected to the Georgia State Senate, where he served for four years. President Jimmy Carter appointed him administrator of the United States Veteran’s Administration in 1977 where he served with distinction until 1981. As administrator, and a veteran himself, Senator Cleland instituted the Readjustment Counseling Vet Center program, which, for the first time, offered combat veterans psychological counseling in addition to physical care. Senator Cleland also served as Georgia’s Secretary of State.

On Friday in Raleigh, Kay will host her 6th Veterans’ Town Hall, and she will host her 7th Veterans’ Town Hall in Winston-Salem on Saturday. Kay comes from a strong military family and knows firsthand the importance of keeping our promises to our veterans. Kay’s father, brother, and husband, Chip, served in the Navy, and Chip is a Viet Nam veteran who attended law school with help from the GI Bill. Her father-in-law is a retired two-star general in the Marine Corps, and she has two nephews on active duty.

I hope you will be able to join us this weekend as we discuss how Kay will keep our promises to our nation’s veterans.

Sincerely,

Fact Check

Upon her arrival yesterday in Fairbanks, Governor Sarah Palin greeted a crowd of 2,000 people with a short speech. We’ve gone through the remarks and offer up some checks on facts and reality.

Comment:

Palin said she took on politics as usual in Alaska, and made the claim that the “old oil monopoly, undue influence there that had control of our state, it’s broken.”

Facts:

The only thing Palin did was raise oil taxes to one of the highest marginal tax rates in the world. She didn’t break any monopoly as the only way you could possibly do that is by revoking their leases and gutting the ownership terms of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Both of those actions would be illegal. She did nothing more than raise taxes.

Comment:

“And the ethical standards that had led to closed doors and closed door dealings, self-interest, it’s gone.”

Fact:

The ethics bill she passed had actually been proposed by Democrats in the legislature before she was even elected but didn’t pass until the FBI raided several lawmakers office. Then and only then, did lawmakers who refused to take action under former governor Murkowski, agree to move the bill forward when Palin got elected and ethics had become too big of an issue to ignore.

In addition, her administration has hid behind a questionable claim of executive privilege and refused to release 78 pages of emails, totalling 1,100 communications even though many of these were copied to her husband who is not a member of the executive branch. And today, her administration has gone from telling Alaskans that they’d participate openly in the Monegan investigation to stalling and suddenly calling the investigation unconstitutional.

Comment:

Palin said people around the nation are saying “thank you, thank you Alaska,” when they hear about the natural gas pipeline from the North Slope.

Fact:

The governor has completely over sold the pipeline plan she passed through the legislature. What the governor’s gas pipeline plan does is grant $500 million to a Canadian firm to file paperwork without having the means to actually build the pipeline. Not only is there no guarantee it will be constructed by the Canadian firm, but their CEO has said repeatedly that they cannot order one piece of steel pipe until the major oil companies agree to pay the cost of the project.

—————————-

This is excellent advice. We all must remain calm. We all must take our game up and go to a new level of steady resolve. I know it is hard because we are all like that lady on the Titanic that had the premonition and the uneasy feeling of dread and slept with her clothes on during the entire Atlantic crossing because she had that very bad feeling. This is what drove us to start searching for information on Fateful Friday and many ending up here in the Mudflats. I think that lady did survive.

But remember we have been here before. It is not so strange. We all understand the game conditions of personal voter destabilizing and disorienting Rovian tactics as they try to blatantly bully the news cycle and program the hapless lizard brains of low information voters. It is tough, but we have to maintain OUR brains and out hustle, out think, and hopefully soon OUT HIT them in every news cycle and with every ad. We must use the Internet tools of 2008 that are now in play like Youtube and the Blogosphere that were not so massively available in 2004.

When you feel upset, think of this: the stakes are mind boggling high indeed. But if O and Joe can win, we have 4 and 8 and then maybe 12 and 16 years to get this country back from the edge MAYBE FOREVER. Put a wooden stake FOREVER into the vampires that have stolen our political process. The spiritually illiterate dumbed down Christan Right (these people don’t know JFD about their religion – Christianity has no original ideas at all. It is all re-fried Zoroastrianism. World Ages, World Messiah’s, Heaven, Hell, Angels, Demons, Satan, End Times, Armageddon, etc. are NOT Jewish ideas AT ALL. They are ALL PERSIAN ideas the Jews got from the Babylonian captivity… don’t get me started… there IS concealed esoteric truth in Christianity, but not in the impaired “Churchianity” of today ). Send James Dobson with his little fat face and fat pudgy fingers to the innermost ring of hell FOREVER with his buddy Falwell. They can drink their Ultra Slim Fast with their personal Devil forever.

We HAVE to get the Culture Wars out of our national politics once and for all and get more reason and rational thinking in. Now. Why? Because of the invention of nuclear weapons people.

We must stay calmer than them and take it one day at a time. OUT THINK these dim wit dunces who do not even know their own religion. They are making potentially massive mistakes. I now see the whole RNC as a huge endless gaffe explosion. They are idiots and it will eventually be very clear to the nation. McCain looks physically worse each day. His family should do an intervention and get him out of this! I fully expect to turn on TV and see footage of him collapsing. The main IS DYING. It is absolutely horrible and shocking to behold. I have actually liked him as a person at times eight years ago. But this whole episode is pathetic.

Take it one day at a time. Stay calm dear, beloved Mudrats!

But, yes, sleep in your clothes if you feel you must.

Now, back to work for me to get a paycheck so I can send money.

cynthia: Even more disturbing in Andrew Sullvan’s blog today is his little blurb about what the McCainnites are doing to program the Sarahbot before she is allowed to open her mouth in public.

Tucker Eskew, a veteran of Mr. Bush’s primary season campaign against Mr. McCain, has been advising Ms. Palin this week, as she has hopped between S.U.V.s and planes, all the while reading briefing materials or receiving tutorials from policy advisers who have dipped on and off the campaign trail to visit with her.

On Wednesday night, three of them were on the plane to Alaska with Ms. Palin: Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mr. McCain’s economic adviser; Steve Biegun, a former staff member of Mr. Bush’s National Security Council who has taken leave from his Ford Motors job to advise Ms. Palin; and Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s senior foreign policy adviser.

Also accompanying Ms. Palin to Alaska as she prepared for her interview was Nicolle Wallace, a communications director for Mr. Bush’s 2004 campaign and, later, his White House. Ms. Wallace’s husband, Mark Wallace, Mr. Bush’s deputy campaign manager in 2004, is helping prepare Ms. Palin for the debates.

Link to full NY Times article is here Squad of G.O.P. Aides Prepares Palin for Interviews

This really is The Manchurian Candidate right before our eyes except the repugs are so arrogant they aren’t even trying to pretend or hide the fact their candidate is just a new model robot. We are all watching Palin be programmed right before our eyes and no one exept for a fewer bloggers who are ignored by all but a few of us, are just letting it happen and no one is crying “BULLSHIT! THIS IS CRAP!”

And after the Sarahbot is programmed and ready to transmit over the airway, because let’s face it she is the ‘shiny cute’ robot and McCain is starting to rust out is anyone going to call her on this crap and say, “Hey how come you don’t already have opnions on this stuff? How come you had to programmed how to think?”

My bet is no…. no one will even ask…. They will attribute her words to her and they will transmit the message to the Midwest housewife who thinks the Sarahbot is ‘just like her’. And I guess if you mean empty headed, easily manipulated and a tool of the right-wing thugs who have hijacked our country, she would be correct.

I worry for Obama sometimes. There are truly evil forces out there who don’t want him elected.

Sad times people, sad times…. This is what we’ve come to and this is what we allow.

There is a new very helpful synopsis of Troopergate just up on Talking Points Memo site. The TPM writer’s conclusion is that the entire investigation will be squelched and that the process of suppressing it is well underway. If the Alaska AG quashes the subpoenas as expected, the investigation will obviously be kaput. The larger question is what political effect that kind of power grab will have. How would the Alaska press and public respond? How would the national press respond? Clearly, papers like the Wall Street Journal are covering this- I wonder if suppressing an investigation will lead to an Archibald Cox moment, when the cover-up set all hell loose.

I’ve been hanging out with ya’ll since stumbling in on Aug 29. What a remarkable community of intelligence, wit and information. You have even inspired me to post my first ever comment anywhere. (I’m a bit of a dinosaur and rather new to all this technology.)
Two points:
The McCain campaign claims to be so ‘outraged’ by the lipstick on a pig comment, and yet they’re okay with the image of this demonic pitbull?
Also have to wonder how McCain will react to the size and placement of names on the button, especially after his pitiful first appearance without her.
My money’s on an inevitable blow-up between Sarah and Cindy. Ka-boom!

Who is the pig again?

The bush/mcbush/gop policies and last 8years plus the 6 they had Total Controll, and the 6 of control and Obstruction, with the last going on two of further Obstruction!!

Clear it up for ya?????

I watched Letterman last night too. Obama was very good and funny. The lipstick exchange was hilarious.

Dave: “Yeah, they got together and they said, ‘You know what? He called our vice presidential candidate a pig.'” (audience laughs) “Well, that seems pretty unlikely, doesn’t it?”

Obama: “It does. But keep in mind that, technically, had I meant it that way, she would have been the lipstick, you see?” (audience, Dave laugh) “But now we’re…”

Dave: “I don’t know, you’re way ahead of me.” (audience laughs)

Obama: “Yeah, the failed policies of John McCain would be the pig.”

But I was also very moved by what he said about the aftermath of 9/11 and what he would have done differently.

And I think in terms of the United States, there was just this outpouring – you remember, people wanted to do something, and, you know, George Bush asked them to shop, and if we had instead said, ‘You know what, we are going to reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil,’ or, you know, ‘We are going to create the kinds of energy-efficient economy that will allow us to weaken the forces of terror,’ that could have made an incredible difference and I think you could have mobilized the American people around bold plans on energy that would make sure that we weren’t continuing to be in the situation we’re in today.”

Full transcript of Letterman here: Really worth the read if you didn’t see it.

Hey Folks, GM to everyone
I have not even turned on my TV yet this morning.
I did head on over to RealClearPolitics and had a peek.
I have no idea what the MSM Polls are saying this morning,
and I am by no means a actuary or statistician, but if I am reading things
correctly, I am seeing hope.
From what it says there, I calculated first the battle ground states.
One was slightly ” iffy” but leaning Obama so I gave it to him.
here was my breakdown of Battlegrounds if won with Electoral votes.
Obama:
Ohio 20 EV ( surprised? I was )
Pennsylvania 21 EV
Michigan 17 EV
Wisconsin 10 EV
New Hampshire 4 EV
Colorado 9 EV
New Mexico 5 EV
Nevada 5 EV
Total Battleground EV for Obama = 91

McCain
Virginia 13 EV
Florida 27 EV
Missouri 11 EV
Total Battleground EV for McCain = 61

I then looked at the RCP Electoral Map in Total
Obama 217 with 60 leaning and McCain 216 with 59 leaning.

Add the battleground totals to each candidate:
Obama = 308 EV
McCain = 277 EV

Lets hope this holds until Nov or gets even better !!

ocliberal — It was a clever exchange, wasn’t it? I was really proud to call him my candidate. Though I am privately sometimes frustrated by his long answers, I find myself tuned in to every word, He captures my attention even when he’s describing policy. He’ll never be the candidate with the glib one-liner. That’s Biden.

Hats off to Letterman for giving Obama a half-hour of free advertising.

Ok I demand all mudflat followers please listen to this interview with John Mccain getting grilled on Sarah Palin. If this does not scare you into working your buts off then I don’t know what will. I mean Mccain can’t even defend the fact this woman has no national security experience. Somebody just please tell me this is all a joke and that the punch line has been delivered and we just somehow didn’t get it. Mccain says her national security experience is on Energy!

But my guess they were remembering Mac’s use against Hillary and now it’s ingrained as meaning All or Any Women whenever mentioned.

……you might be Sarah Palin.

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy.

If you believe in Abstinence Only Sex Education even though both yourself and your daughter became pregnant before marriage…you might be Sarah Palin.

If you say you were against the Bridge from Nowhere when in fact, you were for it and eagerly used the funds for Alaskan pork barrel projects….you might be Sarah Palin.

If you fire a librarian for refusing to allow you to ban books….you might be Sarah Palin.

If you campaign on the virtues of being in the PTA and being a Hockey Mom even as your two oldest children are, in real time, acting out in very self-destructive ways….you might be Sarah Palin.

If you invite your husband to official state meeting and cc: him on official emails about a political enemy, refusing to divulge their contents to a FOI request…..you might be Sarah Palin.

If you think that praying can change one’s predisposition to be gay…you might be Sarah Palin.

If you refuse to grant interviews until the media is properly deferential…you might be Sarah Palin.

If one of your notable qualifications to be Vice President is that you can field dress a moose or shoot wolves from helicopters…you might be Sarah Palin.

If you try to ride the political coattails of previous female candidates such as Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro even though your ideology is diametrically opposed to theirs….you might be Sarah Palin.

When you campaign on the basis of cutting out earmarks and yet you lobbied for and received earmarks to improving recreational halibut fishing, studying the mating habits of crabs, and the DNA of harbor seals….you might be Sarah Palin.

Whether your favorite metaphor is “Putting Lipstick on a Pig”, “You can wrap a Stinky fish in newspaper, but it still stinks”, or “You can’t polish a turd”, the McCain/Palin campaign is doing exactly that. They are repackaging eight failed years of Bush/Cheney, a disingenuous claim of being change agents, and trying to Okie Doke the American Public.

More cynical and nuanced is their pushing cultural wedge issues back into the forefront…getting you to vote for a personality and not about issues – the McCain campaign chair admitted as much.

Lies, Distortions, and Swiftboating are just McCain’s and Palin’s way of distracting you from the real issues. On real, substantive issues, they are eerily silent…..

I say Enough!

Arkangel, thank you for sharing your story. I had to stop sobbing before posting. I am at a total loss to what to say, but know that I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts!
I was watching CNN earlier, and they interviewed a man who lived 4 blocks away from the towers. He has suffered from a lot of illnesses over the past 7 years. CNN gave the statistic that one in eight people in lower Manhattan suffer from Post Traumatic Syndrome. That boggles my mind! Why aren’t we hearing more about this? Have I been watching the wrong news programs, or what?

I’ve been to New York once in my life. My 21 daughter and I flew into Newark NJ on 9/8/2001 and were supposed to fly out of Newark on 9/11/2001. We visited a friend who lived in Soho and I have a picture of my friend, my daughter and myself taken on her Soho rooftop on 9/10/2001 with the towers in the background. We were evacuated out of the Newark airport on 9/11 as our flight home to California was cancelled. We watched the second tower fall from across the bay as we scrambled out of the airport. We were able to secure the last rental card out of New jersey and drove home to Southern Californa in 3 days, driving non-stop, only to stop for 4 hours sleep per night.

I have such a strange perspective on 9/11 as we were so insolated for the three day immediately following just driving in a car, listening to whatever news we could find, buying any newspaper we could get our hands trying to read shell-shocked looks on the faces of every person we saw as we weaved our way out of NJ, through Pennsylvania, hitting Route 66 outside of St. Louis and the whole time just wanted to get home.

Been to New York once in my life and never have gone back since… My story isn’t anything at all like those who lost family, friends and a life, but 9/11 always puts me in a very, very strange place.

I wish Obama had been our President then and I think if he had been we wouldn’t be where we are now.

I know Palin’s lawyer is not working alone. He may be paid by the State of Alaska, but he is surely just a front man, a mouthpiece for McCain and the Repub Party. You can bet he has frequent briefings regarding what to say and do on Palin’s case.

McCain knows where Bin Laden is hiding, but he won’t tell us unless we elect him President. If he’s not elected, as Keith Olbermann asked, will he withhold the information or share it with us in January?

The pitbull/pig/fish flap is only a distraction.

Palin is no more than an actress learning her lines. She has no opinions on most national or international issues. She is being spoon-fed the Repub Party line, then trotted out like a prize filly (yes another animal reference).

I don’t hate McCain or Palin. Yet. But I am thoroughly disgusted with the joke they are trying to pull on all of us.

Also, I just got off the phone with the office of our Representative who decided to join the “truth squad” in Alaska. I was very calm when I asked about this trip and inquired who paid for this trip. I explained that we were a bi-partisan house who pays a boatload in federal and property taxes and we wanted to know if she took unpaid leave for this trip. I also suggested that it was not very wise to be in Alaska when we were (at the time) facing a Cat 4 hurricane instead of here for her constituency. The young lady was very nice and said she would convey our concerns. It might not change anything but I did mention that this will be something we consider when her seat is up for re-election.

How bizarre is it that people in MI are being disenfranchised because their homes are foreclosed? Isn’t that a new low in the history of the Republic? And of course we know who is disproportionally affected by foreclosures. Yes, some people took out bigger loans than they should have but there was a lot of monkey business going on and to devastating effect in our communities and financial system. Defies belief.

In business, when we interviewed candidates for our open professional positions, we used behavioral questioning and scoring to find the best qualified candidates. We used a process called Targeted Selection to help cut through the interviewees who had a tendency to shovel more B.S. than substance.

For each position you hire for, you find traits which are representative of the best perfomers within that position and create questions that ask for “detailed” responses that afterwards get scored based on accuracy and the candiadates actual impact on the situation/action. E.g. what doesn’t count is when people say “we” did this…

As John McCain would like me to interview him for the job, my question is as follows:

So often the GOP party references the foundational thought process of our Nation’s democracy. James Madison (a real “First Dude”) penned the following:

“The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.”

Mr McCain, given a state is investigating your choice of a VP for overstepping her use of governmental resources for potential personal purposes, can you describe a situation where you personally helped the government “oblige to control itself” and do you agree with SP’s early promise of transpanrency in the investigation? Character IS important.

Real Politics.com has an interesting article entitled Palin Doesn’t Matter, Numbers Do

It is a good read. And a hopeful one for Dems.. I am not sure how to post a link here- sorry, whenever I try the posts do not show up.. but you can find it if you search.

I think they got it right. The polls tell us nothing.. the # of young voters (overwhelmingly for Obama) do…

AND BTW did you see Obamam on David Letterman? Very cool, calm, collected and on point. He may not be the politician Bill Clinton was… but he is very good and exudes his hope, sincerity and resolve. I thought it a very good appearance.

And if the Repubs will only appear together or McCain alone, advantage to Dems.. they can hit ALL the media- separately- and be seen by a whole lot more ppl, talking about THE ISSUES! so, keep her from the Media… we can turn this to our advantage!!

Dear Barack,

When the McCain campaign tries to manufacture outrage over your “pig in lipstick” comment, the correct response isn’t a coy dismissal. You need to say, in a tone of rising disgust:

Is John McCain seriously going to lecture me about my respect for women? John McCain, who used the exact same phrase about Hillary Clinton’s health care plan? John McCain who listened to one of his supporters call Hillary “a bitch” right in front of him and said nothing? John McCain who once joked that Chelsea Clinton is so ugly “because her dad is Janet Reno?” John McCain whose idea of a good joke is a story about an ape raping a women? If John McCain has so much respect for women, why has he said such cruel and despicable things about them over the course of his entire career? As the husband of a strong woman, and the father of two girls, I find it disgusting that John McCain, of all people, would go crying to the press about sexism. This is man who doesn’t even believe that women deserve equal pay for equal work. He doesn’t believe women should have the reproductive rights over their own bodies. And he doesn’t give a hoot whether they have health insurance. The only women John McCain does respect are those who might help him get elected.

Mr. Van Flein’s biography at http://www.akcplaw.com states that he was hired by the Anchorage Police Department to defend two officers and was successful in getting the lawsuit dismissed without any payment of money by the city. Was this when Walt Monegan was the Police Commisioner? If so, wouldn’t that make Van Flein a friend of Walt Monegan, and therefore end his argument about Branchflower and French being friends with Monegan? This city is very small. If you work downtown, you probably know 3 out of 5 of the persons involved in this investigation. This is absurd. Good Morning Mudflats,

As I sat quietly this morning, in my own way, offering a personal remembrance to and prayer for the victims of 9-11 and all who were touched by the loss of their lives, for all who worked and died to rescue them, for our brave soldiers and their families (including my son and his family), I reminded myself that I must ALWAYS also remember to say THANK YOU – that’s it, simply “THANK YOU”. For me, those two words are my perfect prayer…they remind me to be grateful and inspire me to get back to work.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest
appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Will they be able to fend off Van Flein’s latest diabolical scheme? Stay tuned.

They should tell Palin’s lawyer that when they get the e-mails from Palin they have requested, then and only then will they consider his request for e-mails.

These people are truly evil. I just heard on Air America that the McCain campaign is sending registered Democrats in Wisconsin and Florida absentee ballots with a return address to a different voting district. If the person uses that ballot and sends it to the wrong district, it will be rejected because the person’s address is not in that district. They seem to be targeting voters in states where the polls are very close. I guess they figure if they can cage 100,000 or so Democratic voters out of the system, they might be able to steal that state.

If you receive an absentee ballot from John McCain, report it to the local authorities, and do not use it! Be smart. Call your registrar of voters before the last day you can register to make sure everything is OK. Then, if you live in a place that uses electronic voting machines, request an absentee ballot from your local registrar and vote absentee. If a majority of Democrats vote absentee, they won’t be able to flip the machines and steal the election.

Today I volunteered to go door to door this weekend for the Obama campaign. Please don’t just sit here in the comfort of this blog. Contact your local Obama campaign office. Get out and work for what you know is right. Don’t let the Republicans steal another election with lies. If you really want to save this election, and our country’s future, DO SOMETHING! DO IT NOW!

Thank you, HamletsMill. I’m just hoping to keep up with ya’ll and maybe contribute to the conversation.
Just heard that Ed Schultz will be broadcasting the Anchorage townhall show on Monday. His is a syndicated show, not regular Air America, so I’m not sure if all AAR stations carry it. I listen on XM which has returned to its original name, America Left.
Thanks again for the welcome. I feel like I’ve already gotten to know many of you.

Keep up the good posting, I’m off to my next appointment. I’ve got to get my laptop on cricket or something…

Hamlet’s Mill: the link now says “this video is no longer available” hmmmm

bwilder: what would Ann Richards have said? We Texans elected Ann instead of a nasty mouth Awl Man Claytie Williams who made a joke about “just laying back and enjoying it” if rape were inevitable. He never apologized and his political career ended. McCain needs to get on his knees to all women, Chelsea Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno … just for starters … and beg forgiveness. The rest of us aren’t tranked up like Cindy was for a number of years and we do remember what was said. Sadly Claytie is a big McCain supporter and just recently raised $300,000 for McCain. They had to move the fundraiser from Claytie’s home because of the old rape comment Claytie had made…. odd don’t you think? http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/06/15/mccain_texas_fundraiser_back_o.html?hpid=topnews

Not Bin Laden?

I had decided to take an official day of remembrance today to mourn the 9/11 attacks, the victims that day, all the subsequent victims of all nationalities who have died since and to be truly grateful for the continued lives of those who but for the grace of God, survived…including a family member.

I’m one of those silly patriots who cried when seeing the original star spangled banner that is housed at the Smithsonian.

Today, it is very cloudy on much of the east coast—unlike that brilliant day seven years ago.

The day gets cloudier and cloudier as this important campaign melts into the sticky, slimey goo the Republican party is so good at stirring up.

…and now, Bin Laden wasn’t even the mastermind (Whitehouse view as of today).

I wonder about the regular army and special forces men and women whose job it has been to search for him all these years. How many of them have died? How many of them have put their lives “on hold” for this important mission?

How many of them can come home now because Bin Laden wasn’t the mastermind?

How ’bout we bring them all home, folks!

Get on your phones, fill those email boxes, make a donation, call a college student, take dinner to someone too busy doing those things to make dinner.

Throw the bums out.

Here’s another on McCain avoiding Claytie because of the rape comment — from the WaPo — even has one of Annie’s old campaign spots.

WWARS (What Would Ann Richards Say?) How about “Come on Johnny, if you don’t agree with Claytie, maybe you’d better apologize for your ape.”

Okay, so just out of curiosity I went to myspace and checked out the candidates various myspace pages. Obama has two pages and between them 700,000+ friends. Mcain’s 1-page has, count them, 54 friends. This race is “close” when you poll the traditional voters. They usually write off the under 25 crowd (I’m 26, but y’all get the point) because we haven’t voted as much in the past. But, that phenomena, is just that, in the PAST. We care about this race and we have liked Obama for a very long time now. I think this race is going to be determined by this nation’s youth and I don’t think anyone but the Obama camp will see it coming. After all, I just saw a stat the other day that there are 50 million millnears (18-30). Think how that could change the electoral map if even half of us come out to vote. Generally, we are a savy and cynical lot. We can look at Palin and not get caught in the hype. We are creatures of the internet so we follow links to here and there. We get the full stories and not the soundbytes. Soundbytes won’t work with us because when we hear something ridiculous, WE LOOK IT UP. When we see a commercial about teaching freakin’ sex to kinders, we pull out our iphones or google the story and get the full truth. I honestly think that we are about to make history, not only because we will have the first black president, but because the “apathetic” youth r going to rise up. Thank you, Republicans, by your very incompetence, you gave us a reason to care. Thank you, Obama, you gave use something to care about.

Thank you for this excellent link on “experience”. Watching it made me realize I cannot delay stepping in myself as a candidate (COUNTRY FIRST after all). I have extensive experience both on the front of energy and international issues:

-yesterday I used my charcoal barbecue (saved precious natural gas)
-this morning I recharged two high capacity batteries (Japanese models!)
-cooked my breakfast on gas (the bacon was Danish, without lipstick)
-I had pizza for lunch (it said “Italian” on the box)
-paid my electricity bill online (saving transportation costs of a check)
-I know more about drilling than anyone else after visiting my dentist last week (Her ancestors are from Poland and she is hot. To avoid confusion, she was drilling.)
-the other day my father told me about his memories of the Russian sputnik (which will enable me to put right the missile defense program)
-I noticed my daugther’s shoes are from Germany (will surely come handy one day…)
-I used a spray (Canadian) as a weapon to eradicate two bee nests on my porch (posing serious security threat to my family and its values)
-we have multiple ELECTRICAL applicances clearly labeled “Made in China” (and I do turn them off to save energy)
-my friends dog is an Irish terrier (everyone knows how successful Ireland has been fighting terrorism)
-last year we watched Disney’s Aladdin (I can translate the Irish experience into Iraq as I now am familiar with all those middle eastern types)

Clearly, this is way more than those naive, inexperienced folks reprting of Greek neighbors (what a joke). You can also see on my resume how much energy and international/national security issues interlinked.

Anyone with more credentials?

okay –

I’m just going through the transcript of McCain’s Acceptance Speech – here are some interesting nuggets that we may be able to use with Gov. Mooselini or McShame:

1. “I fight to restore the pride and principles of our party.”

WOW, makes you kind of wonder what it’s really been like for the past 30 years if he’s the master of principle and propriety, eh?

2. “we lost the trust of the American people when some Republicans gave in to the temptations of corruption….” Huh – how many lobbyists did he have working on his campaign at one time?

Oh yes. Over a hundred. And…who’s his Campaign Manager now? Oh yes!! Yes, the chief lobbyist for Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. (I KID YOU NOT GANG – CAN’T MAKE THAT UP!!)

3. “Iran remains the chief state sponsor of terrorism and is on the path to acquiring nuclear weapons.”

May I just state for the record that I’m going to either have to up my drinking or my BP pills before this is all over? Is this his overture to support the Far Right’s “Let’s Start Armageddon” vision? Did y’all know there is already a resolution on the Hill re this? He and Lieberman are freaking me out.

4. “We face many dangerous threats in this dangerous world, but I’m not
afraid of them. I’m prepared for them.”

Yeah, well. WE’re scared of them, because we think the dangerous threat is YOU, Senator McCain.

5. “I hate war. It’s terrible beyond imagination.”

Yeah, well, does Caribou Barbie know about this because she has wants Google Earth to poof all of the lower 48 and build that pipeline in Alaska to support the survivors of the Armageddon.

6. “We need to change the way government does almost everything: from the
way we protect our security to the way we compete in the world economy; from the way we respond to disasters to the way we fuel our transportation network; from the way we train our workers to the way we educate our children.”

Okay, let me get this straight. Senator McCain has been in the Senate HOW long? 26 years. And he voted with W how much of the time? At least 90%, and some accounts say 95%. . . .wt* has he been doing that, all of a sudden he wakes up with an ephipany and wants to change everything….” HUH?

7. “…And my administration will set a new standard for transparency and accountability…”

AND THAT STARTS ….WHEN???

8. “I’m going to fight for my cause (GET THAT, MUDFLAT’ERS? SOUNDS LIKE HE ONLY HAS ONE CAUSE…) every day as your president. I’m going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God, as I thank him, that I’m an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on Earth. And with hard work — with hard word, strong faith, and a little courage, great things are always within our reach. Fight with me. Fight with me…. (a lot of fight, fight, fight stuff…) We never hide from history. We make history.”

I DON’T WANNA MAKE HISTORY. I WANT A SAFE HAVEN FOR MY SON. I WANT PEACE, PROSPERITY.

(sigh….where’s the bottle?)

GO, KRYSTAL, GO!!! WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP YOU?

11 09 2008
A Brit abroad

hi everyone,

…view from abroad again; two BBC reports on the candidates
(McCain) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7470453.stm
(Obama) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7436997.stm

What I’m not getting to see much of in my cosy corner of Scandinavia is these two in action, so I was fascinated to watch Obama on Letterman and McCain on a local interview… I think it was – I found the link here somewhere… anyway. On the one hand there’s an articulate, humorous, polite man who can talk policy without denegrating his opponent, and on the other you have a hesitant, doddering and uncertain old man who evades questions. Really, to an outsider there’s just no comparison in terms of potential international statesmanship (regardless of policy, who would you rather sit at a negotiating table with?).

A good friend who grew up on a British army base was shocked to hear of Palin’s announcement of her son’s deployment – knew instantly what it would mean to those around him… and drew the instant comparison with Prince William (apparently his follow soldiers donned ginger wigs after the news leaked about where he was, to try to confuse targeted attackers… whether that is true or not it’s a nice story – hope the Palin boy inspires similar loyalty). How can someone so irresponsible with the life of her son and the soldiers around him be in the position she is.

My friend is also doubtful about the chances of Obama’s winning – she is on the British right, but has no illusions about Republican voting scandals in the US. Florida and what happened there has made a deep mark internationally. Get the disenfranchisement of voters into the international press – try to get international attention, to get international observers at the polls to make sure things are run properly. Deep down the rest of the world knows that there are serious problems with the registration of voters from those who aren’t white and middle class, we just don’t really really want to believe it (nor did we want to belive that Bush “won” in 2004). I really don’t know if international pressure will make any difference, but at least it will make those of us who can’t vote feel better!

One last talking point and it’s a bit of a what if… but what if Palin has to step down before the elections due to the scandals and is replaced by someone more credible/experienced. What then? My cyncial view is that the Democrats are better off with her there than with someone else who might do a better job. If they don’t get in running against McCain/Palin, they were never going to get in against a more reasonable ticket (seen with European eyes).

I hope I haven’t offended anyone on a day that should be spent in peaceful reflection and remembrance, but you have welcomed voices from outside the US – and I think that we appreciate it. The rest of the world is watching and praying/hoping that the vast majority of American voters are as wonderful as the Mudpuppies!

About the Wasilla Police Chief Irl Stambaugh from the Seattle Times regarding bar closings:

In the summer of 1996, Stambaugh encouraged Wasilla and the Mat-Su Borough, the regional governing body, to pass ordinances requiring bars and liquor stores to close earlier than 5 a.m., the latest hour allowed by state law. Because bars in Anchorage closed earlier, some people drove to Wasilla to keep drinking, endangering themselves and others, Stambaugh argued. He wanted Wasilla’s bars to close at 2:30 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.

The idea’s supporters talked of reducing roadway fatalities. Opponents talked of an encroachment on their individual freedom. The borough’s leadership rejected the proposal, and afterward so did the Wasilla City Council, by a 3-2 vote. Palin was in the majority.

This just in from State Dem Office:

“You are correct that we do not have an office in Lewiston. We have been working though the local democrats there. We do have an office in Moscow, however. That is run by Jimmy Fox, jfox@laroccoforsenate.com. I am sure he or Pete will get into contact with you. I know the Nez Perce County Democrats are meeting soon to do a large mailing for the local and federal candidates and there is a lot of phone calling to be done. Nez Perce is a very important county to us and all Idaho Democrats. Thank you again.”

Now this is just fine, but I don’t have enough gas to get to Moscow, the one with the UofI 30 miles away. Sound familiar?

krystal: I so agree with you. Most of the older generation don’t get how the ‘kids’ are doing it these days. They don’t even ‘talk’ on phones anymore – everything is text, myspace, facebook and IM. They are in touch with each other contanstly – 24-7.

There is a new generation out there that is smart, environmentally concerned, and technically saavy. It reminds me of the 60s but now there is technology to spread the word. You aren’t seeing “sit-ins”, “war demonstrations” and morentoriums as much because all the rhetoric and outrage is flying over the internet.

The under 30’s are Barack Obama’s secret weapon in my opinion and he understands how to tap the technology. He also understands how to manage the ‘ground’ forces. Under 30’s are notorious for not voting. That is why GOTV is so very important and of all the candidates in this election I think Barack Obama is doing it the best.

I can’t remember where I heard it (Air America?) but I heard someone say the other day the Barack Obama has one of the most well-organized and efficient ground forces as any political campaign in history. This is how he beat Hillary who is no slouch herself with running ground campaigns.

The repugs rely on dirty tricks, lies, fear tactics, the ‘good-old-boy’ network and corporate financing.

If there has ever been a ‘revolution’ in this country Barack Obama is spearheading it and I really believe that come election day the repugs won’t know what hit them.

I think it’s very telling when the only weapon your opponent has against you is deception. McCain can’t run on the facts, his records, his integrity or any of the issues.

My commitment (living in a red county within a blue state) is to talk to one republication a day and ask them a very simple question. Are you happy with the way things are now? This economy? This war that has bled our country for 80 billions dollars so far and we are still counting? I’ve yet to run into one yet who answered “Yes” to all those questions.

This “troopergate” case has got to go forward. She is running on a national ticket and America needs to know. This is not just an Alaskan issue anymore. We, the voters, deserve to gave this investigation go forward in a timely manner and stop all these petty delays. Everyone knows the GOP will do anything they can to stop it and then we will never know how it turns out. If she truly wanted to be held accountable like she said, then let’s get this thing investigated and put an end to it. Thank God for your blog so we can see what really goes on up there. Keep up the good work!!!!

BTW, isn’t her “15 minutes” up yet?????? I keep hoping each day she will just go away and take McCain with her.

We need your help. I appologize if this has already been linked. It’s today’s ABC News 3-minute report/slam of Palin’s hypocracy (sp?) on women’s issues and the uprising of women’s groups in AK on this issue. Can any of you help spread this not just to those of us who are already convinced, but to bloggers and sites that may attract those odd (to me) white suburban and rural moms who seem to be rallying back to repubs because of Palin? A snippet of Gibson’s interview with Palin. Kudos to him. He asked a question we all want answered. “Are you ready?” What’s unbelievable is that she says she didn’t blink and said yes. That’s good. Didn’t think about if you were up to the challenge. Didn’t think about how it would affect your family – your infant with special needs, your pregnant teen daughter (knowing she would be shoved into the limelight and possibly criticized). My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ‘neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

Glad about your son.

As I posted when I first came on Mudflats way back in the “Vetting Sarah Palin” thread on DAY 2 or 3, I explained that Dylan played at then Falconi Field (now called Console Energy Park) in Washington, PA on August 20, 2006 at the SAME PLACE (no you won’t find this nugget of information in the MSM!) where Palin was unleashed upon us on Fateful Friday August 29, 2008. Maybe some of those vibes were still there? Hummmm. As I wrote, I was there that night in 2006. It was a beautiful night concert under the stars. Robert Zimmerman, the Man from Minnesota, was in good form. The last thing he played was “All Along the Watch Tower”… with his “Eye of Thoth” banner flying on that stage in the night breeze. Pure metaphysical statement…

I don’t think Mooselini “gets” Dylan? “First Dude” neither. I don’t think “Pastor Brad” or whatever his name is at the Wasilla Bible Church “gets” Dylan either. Even though he did go through his “born again” period.

My band back in the 70’s used to play this song.

Thanks DeMo.

I just read it. Wow! Not a nuanced answer on Georgia and NATO. My first impression is that this woman has apparently never read Barbara Tuchman! Holy S**t! She had better read up on JFK having read “The Guns of August” right before the Cuban Missile Crisis.

http://www.abbottsys.com/reviews.html

If he hadn’t, neither Sarah Heath nor First Dude nor any of the little Palins nor any of us would probably be here now.

Nor, it appears, has she ever read the “March of Folly”.

http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/3086/rev_tuchmanb.html

Looks like they never covered Rehoboam and the “brash young men” in the Bible down at Wasilla Bible Church either regarding the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel! Tuchman has a famous riff on that bit of Biblical history in her book.

Things aren’t looking off to a good start folks… things aren’t looking off to a good start at all…

But someone here in the Mud did call it earlier this week. She DID skillfully work in her son’s public deployment to Iraq on 9/11 to choke everyone up. Good call. Got to work in the depth psychology of the “story of the binding and sacrifice of Isaac” in her first interview. Has worked great for the last 3,000 years. Wars and rumors of wars.

This thoughtless woman has no idea what she is getting into.
