First Post-Palin Poll Numbers in From Alaska.

6 09 2008

There’s been lots of talk, Sarah-mania, Sarah-despair, and gossip up here in Alaska.  But now the first poll numbers are in and we can see how Palin’s nomination has affected Alaskans’ opinions of our governor and wannabee Vice President.  Comparing the poll numbers taken August 9-12, and August 30-September 2, here’s how they compare.

What is your opinion of Sarah Palin?

Positive:  80.2% -> 81.6%

Negative:  13.2% -> 13.1%

Neutral: 6.4% -> 5.4%

The first poll finished up the day before the infamous taped phone call between Frank Bailey and Trooper Mike Dial, where Bailey pressured Dial to axe Palin’s ex-brother-in-law Trooper Mike Wooten.  So, if there had been any negative effect, it doesn’t show here.  Palin’s popularity had dipped to 67% at one point after Troopergate, but she’s back up into the 80s.   So, if you loved her before, you still do.  If you didn’t, you still don’t.  End of story.

But here’s an interesting twist.  When asked if McCain’s choice of Palin helped or hurt the Republican’s chances this fall:

Helps: 65.2%

Hurts: 20.2%

Not Sure: 14.6%

There’s clearly a segment of people who, although they like Palin in Alaska, aren’t as confident that she brings much to the national ticket.

Is there any breakdown of Alaska’s budget from last year anywhere? Perhaps a news article on How Palin slashed the budget up there. What pork programs she got. What has Alaska done with thier budget surplus, other than the 1,200 check. Thank you! I can’t believe how popular this lady is. She makes my skin crawl.

I just read this article:

Scary stuff. Definitely worth the read.

My friends…grrrrr…I’m in despair. the size of the group of people excited!! about this pick is just mindboggling. There is actually a host of folks out there who think she will be great as VP and fantastic as prez?

I just can not shake the feeling that I’m in that twilight zone….today Asif Zadari won the Pakistani election…..can you imagine the state of the world if Barbie and Ken follow suite? Bomb bomb POW fight eye-ran?

Even CNN’s trutho-meter agreed with the contention that Palin has more Exec. experience than Obama and Biden put together? Is everyone going crazy? Have we lost our minds???

Stay active people and congrats on the record money raised last week.

Need Some Cheering Up? Possible Debate Preview.

I just watched Obama’s and McCain’s webcast presentzations/Q&As to AARP this morning ( link on their homepage http://www.aarp.org). I thought Barack was fantastic: crystal clear on the issues, precise on actions, setting out and seting up McCain’s positions. The section on breaking gridlock was a grand slam. He received constant applause throughout, and a standing ovation at the end.

McCain’s presentation was actually disturbing: rambling, incoherent in parts, full of slogans with absolutely no substance, smarmy kissing up to AARP’s Pres (who is an open McCain advocate). He got a smattering of applause during, and at the end polite applause with no standing ovation, while some people were even getting up and walking out during the final applause. Oh yeah, he clunked in one ‘Sarah Palin’ which received a twitter of claps.

They said transcrips would be going out to their 40(?) million members.

If this is a preview of the debate on domestic policy, WOO HOO! You want a lift? Check it out!! (Can you tell I’m fired up?)

I am personally scared to death that the broad majority of the American electorate has lost its freakin mind.

Are there really and truly that many dumbass people out there who are
actually allowed to vote?

Do these people not understand what is at stake?
Do they really want 8 years more of what we have just lived through?

The thought terrifies me and actually writing it as I have just done

Irishgirl from what I understand on pork, you can get pet projects you want for your state like a museum. Or you can get projects like the Bridge to Nowhere. Now in Minnesota they did get some pork to expand Light Rail. From what I understand pork is in every bill.

If Sarah Palin has shown the very controlling personality that we have seen from a distance…

by refusing to answer questions…either her way or the highway…

She seen to be able to take being critized…she like to bark order…take it from a military person…

Their are different types of leader…and she give me the impression…she like to give orders…and have trouble excepting negative feedback…

I seen a report on cnn …that some person may be afraid to cross her path…now that she may be one step away from presidents … who knows

Plus Govt SP residents do not have to pay income taxes like most of the other 49 states…plus they get a rebate of $2200 or $3200 every year…

That can certainly make easy for a govt to have good rating…plus when your population is not very large … it is lot easy to please more…

Who really knows…one thing is certain she have introduce herself to us…and I don’t like what I see…she just not qualify and she a lier…

I think we should stop asking questions about qualifications and start asking questions about being prepared.

6 months ago she asked some to explain what the VP job actually was…

Presumably after one week, she is being prepared to deliver speeches # 2 and # 3 and who knows?! eventually sound like she can speak for herself on national issues.

I think her presumption, her audacity to think that she is both qualified to be, and will be prepared to be VEEP is – the hope of audacity…

6 09 2008

You know what? I also think the Palin choice is a net plus for McCain:

1. The choice got the campaign a ton of media attention.
2. Palin got the conservative wing of the party excited about McCain for the first time and helped unite the party behind him.
3. The attacks on Palin look like media bias, which will help keep Republicans for looking too closely at the truth about her.
4. Palin rose way over expectations at the convention. From a distance, she actually looks viable.
5. Palin re-energized McCain himself (I don’t want to go too far in that direction).
6. The choice was risky and gave McCain back a bit of his maverick image.

I can’t think of another VP pick McCain could have done all of these things. Romney, Ridge, or Lieberman would have turned off the Christian right and made the party splits worse. Pawlenty would have been the safe and predictable choice but would hardly have set off fireworks.

The downside, though, is that all of this is not going to help McCain all that much:

1. It has convinced a lot of right-leaning moderates that McCain is way too risky to be president.
2. It has turned off a lot of independents and conservative Democrats who believed in McCain’s promise to end partisan fights in DC.
3. It is not bringing in former Clinton supporters at all. If anything, it is driving them to Obama.
4. It has put McCain’s age smack in the middle of the table.
5. It has blunted a lot of the “experience” argument.
6. It has blown all the other personality issues out of the water. Have you heard the “Muslim plot” argument lately?
7. It has tended to suck all the air out of Republican side. Lately, it has been all Sarah, all the time.
8. It hasn’t given the campaign much of a convention bunch and hasn’t helped with the electoral vote at all.
9. It has energized the Democratic base as well.

Bottom line the choice probably helped McCain from sinking faster and deeper, but not changed the momentum of the campaign in his favor.

Maybe McCain will lose by a percentage or two less than he would have without Palin. But the bottom line is that only a win is a win.

Regarding the pork reference, today’s article from the Huffington Post pounds on this issue. McCain has criticized the earmarks system as characterizing wasteful use of federal funds, yet Palin is actually the queen of it–

“She’s Pork Barrel Palin. She’s always been an expert in draining earmark money off the hardworking taxpayer. She submitted $197 million in earmarks – more per person than any other state — in her current budget. And the citizens of her little town got fifty times as much federal pork as the average American!”

When you listen to any politician speak you already know that you’re going to have to stomach half-truths, spin, whatever you want to call it. But what I find completely disgusting is that Palin is outright lying. She said in a speech today that we had won the war in Iraq? Also, that we defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq?

Its news to me that the war has been won.

I did hear that the violence in the region had decreased since the surge (which I was in favor of) and I can just see al qaeda operatives using her taped stupidity to re-energize efforts in the region. “The shrill-one claims defeat!………”

And believe me, she is shrill. Her voice is annoying, I think I even saw Mccain wince once or twice.

Did anyone see this about meth in the Mat-Su Valley? Via Daily Kos.

http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/030805/sta_20050308002.shtml

Troopers dub Mat-Su area the meth capital of Alaska
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASILLA – The Matanuska-Susitna area is the methamphetamine capital of Alaska, according to Alaska State Troopers.

In 2003, authorities uncovered nine meth labs in the area. Last year, the number increased to 42, said Kyle Young, an investigator with the troopers who works with the Mat-Su narcotics team.

Officials with the Office of Children’s Services in Wasilla said the problem affects children. The office receives about 40 calls a month from people reporting abuse or neglect involving some aspect of the highly addictive drug.

In late February, the Mat-Su narcotics unit arrested a couple at their Willow home. Michelle Motta said for years she tried to warn authorities that her three young nieces lived in the midst of a methamphetamine operation run by their parents, Phillip Dean and Laura Jackson.

Alaska State Troopers reported finding a “large active meth lab” in a detached garage shop. The house was a frigid mess, with piles of dirty dishes, clothes everywhere and frozen pipes, investigators said.

Through a hatch in the shop floor, the team found an underground room with a meth lab in one corner, as well as old marijuana root balls and lights from a past pot-growing operation.

An investigator said the team didn’t find the children at home but saw signs of them there. Motta said the girls – ages 14, 8 and 6 – at times slept in the garage with the lab.

A year ago, the oldest girl detailed the household’s rampant drug problems and squalid living conditions in a handwritten letter to a judge.
“My parents grow marijuana and crystal the(y) did the drugs that they bought in front of (my sisters),” the letter begins. “They spent most money on them instead of food or doing laundry. I got left home with nobody there I got left home with drug(g)ies…”

Motta now has custody of her three nieces. The Jacksons are jailed at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility in Palmer.

Children sharing homes with meth labs face the risk of contamination, fire, explosion, neglect and hazardous living conditions. Caseworkers report little children complaining of breathing problems from toxic fumes rising off chemicals such as acetone, ammonia and hydrochloric acid.

When authorities surrounded a converted bus housing a meth operation in Big Lake in January, a 13-year-old boy who answered the door bragged that his mom cooked the best meth in the valley, according to the troopers.
During a 2003 bust at a house outside Wasilla, officers discovered five children living inside, all younger than 8 years old.

The calls about meth to children’s services in Wasilla accounts for as many as 40 percent of the agency’s total monthly child protection calls.
The troopers are aggressively going after meth labs, said Capt. Ed Harrington, the supervisor of the state’s drug and alcohol enforcement unit.
“It’s just not a simple process,” Harrington said. “Just because somebody calls in and says ‘So and so’s cooking meth’ doesn’t mean we’re going to kick the door in the next night.”

This was from a September 4th article. There are some pretty interesting comments, too, including from a Native American Alaskan, if I’ve got that right.

Gadzooks this stuff is horrible! I wish people would just stay away from it. Wrecks communities in a matter of months. I am sure Alaskans have strong opinions about it…we have major issues with in my community, too. I can’t think Gov. Palin didn’t know what was going on with this.

How many times did McCain mention he was a POW (in speech to AARP)?

Ooh, ooh, ooh! I forgot! Right near the end, sort of dangling off his non-explanation on gridlock (a question both were given), he went off on this truly odd but not surprising ramble about our wonderful troops. Sooooo close, but not quite. The audience was absolutely…puzzled.

6 09 2008

I don ‘t think the public cares if he is a great debater, remember that didn’t stop Bush from winning. Here’s 3 things we already know about McCain:
1. He can’t deliver, nor does he write, speeches.
2. He can’t debate.
3. He was a POW
Obama will crush him just like Gore crushed Bush, but that alone isn’t going to be the difference in this election. I think focusing on the fact that Reps are calling this a personality contest (!?!?!?!?!) DOES help.

MY VIEW OF GOP INCOMPETENCE
Hello to “From England,” and “Harley,” and anyone else out there who is getting worried! I share your concerns, but honestly, the GOP can have Alaska’s 3 electoral votes (no offense to Alaskans intended) and Obama will still win…It is a sign of how poorly run the GOP is that she’s on the ticket at all; they couldn’t do the math to see what she could deliver (one state with 3 electoral votes? That’s all they wanted from a VP?) They could have had someone deliver a few more electoral college votes than that (Romney or Pawlenty, possibly). They haven’t spent enough time with the electoral map. And if you want comfort, think about the incompetence of a party that doesn’t care about “vetting” a VP at all, and can’t distinguish a visual of Walter Reed Middle School from Walter Reed Hospital in their biggest presentation of the year. They are really really incompetent. Their campaign is already in shambles, dispatching people to Alaska and having to attach “policy babysitters” to Palin on the road, saying she won’t give interviews, shuttering “Troopergate” witnesses and the National Enquirer. They are already overwhelmed, and no one is really “minding the store.” My 2 cents, anyway…

RE: Contacting the Obama campaign, I wouldn’t know how to contact them.

I would like them to address her lack of -Preparedness- to even speak on her own much less ascend to the presidency.

My other idea regarding the campaign is to dismiss the apples and oranges comparison of her -Qualifications- as Mayor and him as community activist.

For each level of elected office each of his has more stature and authority over more people than hers.

And by the way she needed to hire an administrator to help her as mayor of 5000!

Anyone know how to contact Obama headquarters?

How about some research on how Sarah’s mayorship of Wasilla paved the way for big box stores to dominate the area and drove out small businesses. Couple this with how these stores actually take money out of the community and lead to a greater disparity of wealth. A lot of these big box stores and fast offod chains only provide low paying service jobs and most without healthcare.

I remember reading an article about Wasilla sometime a year or so back that talked about the demographic income gap between those earning just above poverty level wages and those in living above the 150,000 dollar range. The article noted that there were very few middle 45,000 to 99,000 thousand wage earners in the valley, or something like that… Anyone else read this and can point to the source?

I think it would be interesting to bring these in all together and correlate how meth problems may thrive in this type of environment.

Sarah ran on a sort of populists platform. It would be great if we could make a strong case that her development policies actually hurt small communities.

Each day I see Sarah is more and more like Bush and I have had to reconsider what I felt about her previously. I think a lot of Alaskans got duped with her media image as a reformer and populists. We should drive home the point that not only is McCain another four years of Bush, Palin is too.

Lulu…you’re right in many ways. The GOP is in total disarray…especially when compared to the superb organisation and leadership that Obama has brought to the Dems. I am so thrilled to see the way you guys are pulling together and driving the campaign forward with new voter registrations, donations and etc….what an example of grass roots organisation!!

The GOP/Mcpalin are doing absolutely nothing to earn any votes that may get – but I just completely fail to understand how so many thinking human beings can vote first and foremost on the basis of religion….gun ownership…..gender…gango ho attitude…rather than issues that are really going to affect their lives like the economy, healthcare, education, leadership/integrity.

It really shakes one’s faith in Democracy…..American style.

But as others have pointed out….and I agree…the polls don’t account for the difference in voter registration between parties. I actually think that Obama will win by a good margin. And in some ways Miss SP has been a good wake up call for us!!

You miss the point when you describe them as thinking human beings. They don’t think. They do what their leaders tell them to do. Remember the headline in the UK right after the 2004 election, “How can 58million people be so dumb?” That truly sums it up.

Also you might want to read John Dean’s “Conservatives Without Conscience.” Don’t know if you’re familiar with Stanley Milgrom’s research shortly after WWII trying to figure out why the Germans so willingly follow Hitler into the abyss (ref. “Obedience and Authority”). Well, more research has been done on that question. And Dean ties the new research up nicely with the conservative/authoritarian mind-set.

Referencing the querry about Pork: Essentially it is an attachmnet to a bill that is probably going to pass. A way to slip in needed money for a specific project. Sometimes, it can be for somehing as dumb as the “Bridge to Nowhere” but, equally, it can frequently be for absolutely necessary projects to a city or community. Not all pork is a bad thing, despite McShame’s ranting against it! And it truthfully comprises very little of the budget…again, despite McShame’s rants. Wired Differently

Thanks to Marti for the heads up on the AARP presentations. I honestly haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to Obama (or McCain, for that matter) until now. Didn’t even listen to Obama’s acceptance speech. The selection of Palin has galvanized me, as it seems to have others, so I forced myself to watch the RNC. I just watched the AARP speeches, and it was the first time, believe it or not, that I have listened to Obama speak, except for little sound bites on the news.

The main difference between the two speeches was, as Marti pointed out, a specific plan from Obama and rambling generalities from McCain. I heard lines repeated verbatim from McCain’s acceptance speech, and he even went off topic, talking about education and school choice. You can’t even say that it was a case of Obama substance over McCain style, because McCain’s delivery was wooden and rote (at least we were spared the POW reference).

I don’t have a whole lot of faith in the electoral system, not after the stolen election of 2000. Vested economic and political interests will do their best to shove their McCain and the newly-anointed darling of the right Palin down our throats. Neither do I have any illusions that Obama won’t owe huge political debts to corporate and other interests if he is elected. But McCain is a pandering, blowhard creep, living off his war hero reputation, completely owned by the Republican Party even as he tries to distance himself from the past 8 years of Republican mis-rule, and Palin? She’s just an affront to everything I believe in. I think Obama actually does care about people. So there it is. I will vote, and I’ll vote for the man who has both a brain and a heart. I hope my vote is counted.

It’s not surprising to me that more people in Alaska are FOR her than against her. After all, considering how many perks and pork she brought in as Governor, she will probably deliver a lot more as VP. It’s all about money.

Oy vey. Now the word is that Palin won’t be available to the press for two weeks:

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09/in-hiding-for-t.html

As for the MSM, they know all this stuff, but they can only publish so much at a time. There is other news going on the world, too. I think it’s good for it to come out slowly, bit by bit, because then each story makes a bigger impact. If it were to all come out at once, people would just get overwhelmed and the message lost. Or Republicans will accuse the MSM of piling on.

No, this is good. The MSM releases a story, the buzz builds, Obama and Biden pick up the themes and hit back. You have to keep things simple for people to absorb, and this is not a simple story. We need to have patience that this will all see the light of day.

Two thoughts before I really do sign off. So far, still, over 90% of all the Obama contributions have come from individual doners, each averaging less than $100. No PACs or lobbyist (sp?) money allowed. I know this may sound like hype but it’s in the public record. So, maybe for real “not this time”.

Second, you may enjoy watching Obama’s acceptance speech, if only for the first portion, before he gets more into policy. It’s more down-to-earth than his early big rally speeches. More on Pork

The term pork barrel spending is American, dating back to slave times when barrels of salted pork were given to slaves.
It became a slang for a big gift, and was applied to spending- ” pork barrel spending.”
now its just ‘pork’ or ‘earmarks’ to denote spending designated for a particular purpose.

Mudflatians, have any of you every seen this guy’s stuff?

“TheMiniTrueReport”.

I just loved his Geroge Orwell “1984” theme in the early Primary Campaign to make his point. He is apparently a Ron Paul guy or was just using the footage to make his point.

Here is his YouTube Main Page link

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMinitrueReport

I just wrote him an e-mail from my YouTube account and told him about the amazing Mudflats Blog.

I said “Could you use your wonderful Orwellian video editing techniques to do some videos on the Sarah Palin VP nomination? It would be WONDERFUL! Just take footage on her and morph it into you stock footage “1984” techniques and commentary with HER as BIG BROTHER…

…The first one would be great about her trying to remove books from the library in Wasilla and that everyone must support her effort in support of The Party…and…oh yeah…sign the Loyality Oath too.

I am going to post a link up there now to your stuff.”

We essentially have an abusive “Permanent Corporate War Socialism State” under the NeoCon theorist hell. Took our nation’s money and funneled it to their cronies in “The Party”. Haliburton. KBR. Blackwater. Etc. Now you add in Alaska Oil Money, Inc. with the New GOP Princess Leia Governator of Alaska, Inc. – the pork barrel Leona Helmsley – BIG SISTER OF WASILLA ALASKA – so why not go with this Orwellian video template? Eh?

I think it would be boffo now in the age of Internet 2 grass roots interactive techniques. Let it all go viral from the grass roots.

If any of you think like wise and have a YouTube Login account, perhaps send him an e-mail too if you like his work.

At least someone this talented may start posting here and get some ideas because I sent him the link.

Best to all!

With Election Day just two months away, both presidential candidates sit for interviews on the Sunday talk shows, eager to capture some post-convention momentum.

Republican John McCain gets the full half hour on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” his first Sunday show interview since formally accepting the GOP presidential nomination in St. Paul, Minn.

How will the Arizona senator pivot off of his Thursday night acceptance speech and into the fall campaign?

Not to be outdone, Democrat Barack Obama takes his Sunday show turn on ABC’s “This Week.”

What will the Illinois senator have to say about McCain’s surprise pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate?

After Obama, host George Stephanopoulos breaks down the interview and the just-finished GOP convention with New York Times columnist David Brooks, The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart and ABC’s Martha Raddatz and George Will.

Palin, who’s been campaigning with McCain, has no announced plans for any major media interviews. But the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden, takes his turn in the hot seat Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Irishgirl — I may be repeating other comments, but in American, “pork” refers grants of money from the Federal budget to benefit specific political subunits (states or Congressional districts). To be TRUE pork, the grant should be due entirely to the political power of specific Senators and/or Congressmen, and not to any real benefit to the United States. A good example is the Bridge to Nowhere, which you can google for details.

Often, pork is deployed via “earmarks”, which are specific allocations of Federal funds that are embedded in a piece of legislation. Sometimes the host legislation is a budget bill; sometimes it has nothing at all to do with the subject of the earmark. It doesn’t matter; the earmark is generally a small fraction of the total cost of the legislation, and ends up being approved just to get the bill passed.

I am 100% certain that the same kind of patronage occurs in European governments. Perhaps you could let us know what the Irish equivalents of “pork” and “earmarks” are.

I have just send this e mail out to all of my friends on my mailing list and please feel free to copy this letter, if you find it useful, and sent it to your friends on your list. The more who knows, the better we are.

Dear Friends:

So like had nothing else to do (I do) I took part of my Saturday off to do a little research of my own, based on John McCain´s acceptance speech Thursday night, September 4, 2008.

I am known among friends to be a bit rebellious and also question authorities, especially when they blow air up my…you know what…and I am sure my lovely girlfriend would say now, as she reads this “don’t you have something better to do” and I do babe. I will get on that “honey-do-list” when I am done here.

This year is a very important election year, after 8 years under the Bush administration, its time for a change and educating our self, with a library as big as the internet offers today, versus 8 years ago. It’s clear that we can make our own opinion today on rights and wrongs, and not take the political speeches raw, but do a little home-cooking our self.

So I have tried to keep this brief and listed my sources of information, all reliable and non partisan groups, so you can look up and do a little after reading and make a wise choice on November 4th.

OH and PLEASE do forward to friends that need some deeper education in this difficult process😀

John McCain: I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them.

Fact: According to the non patrician and non profit organization, Tax Policy Center Obama will decrease the tax burden on families with an income of $250,000 or less:

“The Obama plan would reduce taxes for low- and moderate-income families, but raise them significantly for high-bracket taxpayers (see Figure 2). By 2012, middle-income taxpayers would see their after-tax income rise by about 5 percent, or nearly $2,200 annually. Those in the top 1 percent would face a $19,000 average tax increase—a 1.5 percent reduction in after-tax income.”

“McCain would lift after-tax incomes an average of about 3 percent, or $1,400 annually, for middle-income taxpayers by 2012. But, in sharp contrast to Obama, he would cut taxes for those in the top 1% by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent.”

Source: http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/UploadedPDF/411750_updated_candidates_summary.pdf

John McCain: My health care plan will make it easier for more Americans to find and keep good health care insurance. His plan will force small businesses to cut jobs, reduce wages, and force families into a government-run health care system where a bureaucrat…

Fact: Obama’s plan would require businesses to contribute to the cost of insurance for employees or pay some unspecified amount into a new public plan. But his proposal specifically says, “Small businesses will be exempt from this requirement.” And it offers additional help to small businesses that want to provide health care in the form of a refundable tax credit of up to half the cost of premiums. We’ll note that neither man has defined what exactly a “small business” is.

Source: http://www.factcheck.org

“We now face an opportunity — and an obligation — to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday’s health care debates… My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness.”
— Barack Obama, Speech in Iowa City, IA, May 29, 2007

Source:
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/

John McCain: We all know that keeping taxes low helps small businesses grow and create new jobs. Cutting the second-highest business tax rate in the world will help American companies compete and keep jobs from going overseas.

Fact: Though John McCain has not defined small business, his tax plan does call for a cut in corporate tax from 35% to 25%. According to Center for American Progress Action Fund, such tax cut would generate alone $3.8 billion tax cuts for the five largest American oil companies.

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/issues/2008/pdf/oil_tax.pdf

John McCain: We’ll — we’ll — my friends, we’ll build more nuclear power plants. We’ll develop clean-coal technology. We’ll increase the use of wind, tide, solar, and natural gas. We’ll encourage the development and use of flex-fuel, hybrid and electric automobiles.

Fact: Though John McCain does have plans for alternative energy, wind, tide and solar energy is not one of them. In a town hall meeting on July 18, 2008 in Warren, MI he told supporters that he doesn’t think that renewable energy is likely to be “as much of the solution as some people think” And “we can not reply on it.”

Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OJnZ1iDEfo

John McCain: I have fought the big spenders in both parties, who waste your money on things you neither need nor want, and the first big-spending pork-barrel earmark bill that comes across my desk, I will veto it. I will make them famous, and you will know their names. You will know their names.

Fact: Though John McCain has fought wasteful spending in Washington D.C. it is kind of ironic statement that he gave during his acceptance speech. While Sarah Palin was mayor of the town of Wasilla, AK she hired a group of Washington D.C. lobbyist to lobby for money for her town and received a total of $26.9 million in Federal funds.

Since becoming the Governor of Alaska, she has this year alone submitted a budget for Federal money in the amount of $197 million dollars, including $25 million for studying the Alaskan salmon and $2 million to studying the Bering Sea Crab.

Oh, and lets us not forget the famous “Bridge to no where” that she first supported, then declined, but still took the money for other projects in Alaska.

Yup, McCain sure made her famous.

Friends, I hope you see my point in this “small” email, but without education, we can not make an educated choice

May I finish up here with a famous quotation by a man who will be known in US history forever, not for the best, but for where we are today:

“Our answer?”

“Not this time.”

“Not this year.”

“This is not a time for third chances it is a time for new beginnings.”

I would like to encourage anyone who would like to make a donation of books to the Wasilla Public Library to join me in doing so. Their address is Wasilla Public Library, 391 N Main St, Wasilla, AK 99654. I suppose if they are inundated with books, they can pass them on to other libraries in Alaska as well. When I was a teenager, the only way I was exposed to other ideas then what I had around my peers and family, was at the local library, and the public high school I attended. I hung out at the library a lot, as there wasn’t much else to do. I like to think that was what started me on the path of being a more critcal thinker. I visited AK this past summer and the natural beauty of the state is magnificent. I passed through Wasilla twice going to Denali Natl. Sarah Palin…as much as I dislike and mistrust her…is in NO way in the drivers seat here. Her little head is so blown up right about now…she THINKS she is the best thing since sliced bread.

Its the McCain camp keeping her out of the hands of the press…not Sarah. I am not at all sure she understands how difficult that is going to be, and make no mistake….she will have to “meet the press”.

No…McCains handlers dont want her talking. They know she doesnt have a clue, and she hasnt yet understood enough about her own party line to discuss the issues. She doesnt have a freaking clue about the economy…education…health and most importantly, world affairs. Her world view, I have seen it written over and over..is very very small. It centres only around herself, her family, friends…and little bits and pieces of Alaska.

This is so damn frustrating. I got bitched out today, because as was said to me…”you are woman ….you need to support her.” WHY do I need to support her???? Cause she has the same genitalia as I do? I am so sick of this. In the final analysis, this fool could set women back even further.

If she had a shred of decency and 2 braincells, she would have turned John McCain down. Good God she isnt even smart enough to know she is being used. Or worse…she knows and she doesnt care as long as she gets some benefit.

Marti,

You were absolutely right about the AARP webstream of the McCain and Obama appearances at the AARP meeting. It was SHOCKING how poorly McCain answered questions – several times he simply went back to parts of his acceptance speech even if the topics he was talking about had zero relation to the topic/question that was being discussed/asked. He actually was talking to AARP about physical education for kids in schools, nuclear power plants – it really was just a regurgitation of what had been written for him for last Thursday night.

I continue to be stunned.

Thanks for the tip.

There will be no way McCain will be able to avoid Bush.

Hey, everyone. One last observation I wanted to share about McCain this weekend. His Palin VP pick won’t be the last “quick draw” decision he makes in the next 57 days. He will make more mistakes; you can count on it!

<>

If anything, the more hasty decisions he has to make–and the final 3 months of a presidential campaign requires a lot of those–the more mistakes he will make. Palin is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more!

Sorry, I didn’t format my quote correctly. This is what I was quoting from above. From McCain’s own 2002 autobiography, “Worth the Fighting For”:

Also, for those who are getting nervous about the polls creeping back toward even, don’t despair. During the past few weeks, the polls in specific swing states–PA, OH, VA, etc…are moving toward Obama. A website http://www.fivethirtyeight.com has a great deal of statistical rigor to back this trend.

BTW: 538 is the number of electoral votes to be won in the election.

I am an addict, found this site and now can’t stay away…

Why throw your knocked up daughter to the wolves?, just produce the Trig’s Birth Cert and prove he’s yours.

Why have an amniocentesis as an older mother-to-be, since it has a risk of miscarriage and you would never chose to terminate the pregnancy anyway?

I understand (having been a midwife) that the likelihood of the daughter being Trig’s Mum is less likely, but I do believe a large % of Down’s babies are born to under 35’s as they are not routinely given an Amnio test or genetic testing like they do for older or high risk mothers so there are a greater number of them delivered to younger women as the older mothers are tested and then THEY MAKE A CHOICE! So it is indeed a possibility that the baby is a ‘grandbaby’. Of course when I tell people this they explain that it’s not possible as daughter is 5 mths pregnant….how do we know this?….because THEY told us! Even if the Trig is the grandchild……it is possible to get pregnant very soon after delivering another baby…..10 and a half months between babies, not impossible especially if you have had no sex education and no contraception and wonky science……..

I too lived in Alaska for a whole 9 months and left as soon as I could……now my friends are beginning to understand why I hated it! As a UK citizen transplanted to the US and only experiencing Alaska and Texas I have had the joy to live in two very conservative states!

I am now asking everyone I know ‘Are you registered to vote?” This is making me very nervous, people!
It is a joy to be part of the Mudflats, thank you

This blog, and the community it created, have become my reason for surfing the web for the past week!

I have a shameless plug. I created a group on Facebook:

Vote early for Barack Obama and Joe Biden

My personal goal is to get 1,000 members and want to ask you to check it out-and hopefully join! I am a little behind in my rent, but want to do what I can to help the country at this juncture. I think voter registration, confirming eligibility, and early voting are critical to our democracy in 2008.

On a mechanical note, if anyone has any legal expertise, is okay that I publicizing the League of Women Voters url? Also, if anyone is technically inclined, I could use some co-administrators (such as hiring a questionable character to replace Monehan).

Keep up the good work, but keep the focus on the facts, McCain and Palin’s “judgment”. The last thing anyone wants is falling into the trap of our own hubris such as when Paul Wellstone died in Minnesota.

Question-
My local radio keeps harping on how Sarah was the head of the Alaska National guard- and now he is sending out emails that say in part

“The Alaska National Guard, so close to Russia, is a Military Force unto itself.
As our first line of defense, they are authorized to act independently,
and short of Nuclear Weapons, with only the approval of the Governor and not the President. She gets regular security briefings- more than Joe Biden.”

Other conservative blogs are echoing this- can any Alaskan please point out the legitimacy of this statement?

Listen to Obama and then McCain address the AARP 59th Anniversay Forum

It was broadcast live on the internet and will be going out in the AARP mailers next month.

Obama http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/TopicAreas/Events/life-at-50/webstream/obama.html
Lists details on how he wants to work towards shoring up SS and providing helath care.

McCain http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/TopicAreas/Events/life-at-50/webstream/mccainod.html
Notice the glaring lack of details but the promises, promises…..talks about having a government

Wired Differently

Thanks, Marti, for reminding me about the small donations Obama receives (many from people who read this blog!).

I have to say it’s a good thing the kids have gone back to college and the kitty passed on a couple weeks ago. Otherwise I’d be in big trouble! The soup’s boiled over twice already, and it’s taken me a whole day to get one load of laundry done. No telling when the clean sheets will actually make it onto the bed.

FYI, about the library book donation, before you pack up your old John Grisham novels to send to Wasilla, be aware that most public libraries have collection development policies that guide the additions to the collection. Donations often don’t make the cut. You should also know that a recent (within the past 10 years) president of the American Library Association was a school librarian from Alaska who was no slouch at defending intellectual freedom. They train ’em well up there. I’m proud to be in the same profession as the woman who stood up to Sarah Palin in her home town.

I’m a transplanted Canadian and I took out American citizenship last year after 28 years in this country (not to worry, I am dual, at least in the eyes of the Canadian government–LOL). At any rate, after almost three decades of being disenfranchised, this is my first year to vote in an election–and what a doozy!

Frankly, I am having the time of my life. I alternate between being quakingly terrified of the possible consequences and hugely entertained. I truly think that many of the issues are non-issues–the question of Trig’s parentage, the so-called affair, even Troopergate–SP has far greater inadequacies that are sure to do her in, not to mention McCain’s own obvious lack of fitness for the job. But I don’t want to get too cocky–I was here in 2000 and 2004 and I know that elections can be stolen in the most vile and unforeseen ways.

So here’s a completely trivial question, given what I’ve just spouted. How can we be SURE little Trig has Down syndrome? He actually looks quite normal to me. Is it possible that he is not only Bristol and Levi’s baby, but a quite normal child, to boot? I only throw this out as further fluff for speculation (remember, I am the one who recently fell for the Vanilla/Chocolate satire). Is it at all POSSIBLE that this poor little tyke is being used not only as a platform for SP’s anti-abortion stance, but her sudden transformation into a Special Needs Advocate as well? (After all, given her age, it’s a convenient cross to bear).

AKMuckraker, forgive me if I’m getting a little flippant. But I am still waiting for that email from you with your paypal information. 😉

Please don’t send books to Wasilla!
A small town without many library employees will not be able to handle the workload of processing and making the decisions about keeping books they have not ordered. Sometimes donations are more work than they’re worth. Not every book is one you want in your collection — that’s not censorship but rather building a quality collection that meets the needs of your patrons and fits on your shelves!

Take it from a librarian who knows!

Mollys Mom that is what I have been thinking. And releasing her medical records would prove that too. But they were self diagnosing them. The DSM-IV used to be online. I think they have taken it offline now. Since I have nicknamed the McCain-Palin ticket as the “feel sorry for me” ticket, and since she has told lies already, how do we know the baby is truly a downs syndrome baby?

I for one am tired about all this talk of executive experience. Has everyone forgotten that George W. Bush came to us with 8 yrs. of “executive experience” as the governor of Texas ( a little hamlet with a population that is at least 15 times that of Alaska’s)? He also had quite a bit of experience running various companies (into the ground) before he decided to grace us with his public service. Executive experience is not the trump card everyone seems to think it is.

About library donations – our library has a monetary donation system so you can stipulate what type of book you want them to buy with it. For instance you could say you wanted them to buy books about government, wildflowers, cooking, or children’s books.

Currently, on my Yahoo page there is a story titled:

Lawmaker accused of politicizing Palin probe

http://www.akip.org/history.html

Okay, I need the help of some who understand Alaska’s politics better than I. It seems JOHN COGHILL wants Sen. French removed from the Palin “Troopergate” investigation. The article states:

“Democratic state Sen. Hollis French “appears to be steering the direction of the investigation, its conclusion and its timing in a manner that will have maximum partisan political impact on the national and state elections,” state Rep. John Coghill said in a letter dated Friday.”

John Cargill IS the son of Jack Cargill, who was well known for his strong affiliation with the Alaska Independence Party, correct? Does Coghill have the power to get French (and I assume that would include Branchflower) removed from this investigation?

I hope no one minds too much, but I just wanted to say I don’t think it’s wise to talk to people about the Trig baby-mama angle. There’s just too much speculation, and not enough facts. It undermines the case for Obama, and makes Palin out to be more maligned than is fair, if the “haters” spread stories that are not verified. Here in a bit of an echo chamber, it doesn’t matter as much. But we run the risk of appearing unhinged, which takes power from stronger arguments. Don’t get me wrong, I think it doesn’t affect much if we talk amongst ourselves (I’m ashamed to say I get some pleasure from it) so I don’t mean to stop you. It’s just that it reminds me of that Obama-is-a-secret-Muslim-extremist story, and it has the potential to be just as politically damaging, if it hasn’t been so already. I wouldn’t advertise it, is all.

O.K. Here’s my latest thought.

During the primaries, Obama ran a campaign where he just squeezed, and squeezed, and squeezed until it was mathematically impossible for Clinton to win. I think he is doing the same thing with McCain. At this point, Obama can lose FL AND OH AND CO AND NH and still win the election. If McCain loses FL OR OR OH OR PA OR VA he loses.

It is just becoming mathematically impossible for McCain to pull this off.

Kathy – re your question about what Palin does with the nat guard. while it is try that she is the statutory head of the AK nat guard, it is not true that she gets full nat security briefings in that roll, and certainly not at the high level that Biden (or any other Senator) gets theirs. she can, as governor, activitate the AK nat guard for state emergency situations, but she has no say as to their deployment for national matters. once activated, they come under the perview of the federal dept of defense, not her.

since her fluffing of her resume and responsibilities is not a new thing, it is important to double check anything and everything she and the mccain campaign claims. unfortunately, most people are too lazy to check for themselves and won’t look at anymore than her lipstick.

Quit honestly, there are so many issues with Sarah Palin it is difficult to know what is or isn’t true. I can’t remember ever a time in our history when the public would have to do all the digging to find out the truth….I say McCain brought all this on himself with his poor judgment of announcing a Surprise VP at the last minute.

I don’t live in another country (although I did at one time) but my daughter is married to a Frenchman and has lived in France for many years. She has never faced any anti- American sentiment but she has watched the US became both a laughing stock and a source of grave concern. Throughout the Bush years, complete strangers started asking what is wrong with the American people. How could they elect someone like him? Bush reinforces every negative stereotype of Americans. Recently people have begun asking her about the election – again, what’s wrong with your country and please don’t let this happen again. Not too long ago, a complete stranger (French) heard her speak English, came over and asked to discuss politics -in English.
The woman said she was terrified the US would elect another Republican. She said “the American elections effect all of us but we don’t get a vote.” Before leaving she begged my daughter to think about the rest of the world and be sure to cast her vote for Obama.
She’s dreading the questions and comments she’s going to be hearing now that Palin has appeared. The really sad part is that to a lot of Americans that’s enough to make them vote Republican. You sure wouldn’t want ot be respected and looked up to by the rest of the world – hell no, we’re red necks and proud of it!
Speaking of red necks, did anyone read that Sarah had at one time incorporated a business that she named Rouge Cou? She said it was a fall back in case she didn’t make it in politics. It translates literally to Red Neck – she thought it was a classy way to say it. Of course, with even the most basic knowledge of French you’d know that the correct form is Cou Rouge – so classy. I’ll hope for my daughter sake that the French don’t find out.

Irish Girl:
I am an OB doc, and have supervised a lot of deliveries. The story behind S Palin’s pregnancy is suspicious:
1. If they loved this baby so much, which I do not doubt, where are the pictures of her pregnant? No picture of her with hand on belly, with belly showing, with hubby’s hands on belly? The McCain camp could have released them all to quell the controversy.
2. The whole flight from Texas thing reflects at best poor judgment. Why would an OB advise her to go To AK with leaking fluid with a Down’s baby? If the OB suspected AF leak, she should have been sent to a hospital in Texas. Otherwise would be medical malpractice.
3. Why would her doctor induce her in Wasilla at 36 weeks? if membrane rupture is confirmed, you induce labor at that gestational age. But babies at that age are still at risk for respiratory distress and will need higher level of care.
4. 6# 2 oz is a little big for 36 weeks with DS, but very possible. Maybe she was further along.
5. Most importantly, no edema. Look at her in the pictures before and after. Her face is the same. Her belly does not show. Her breasts look small. There was a picture in Adn with husband Todd and her in profile holding the baby. look at the hands. No edema (swelling). Bristol at 5 months has bigger breasts than her breastfeeding mom. IIRC, she excused herself in the people mag interview to breastfeed.

Some things do not add up. But again, hiding something like this is no easy task and I am no Sherlock Holmes. I am pretty sure a lot in the media have looked at it. it is still possible all the above is true and she is the mom. Maybe as possible as me winning the lottery tonight.

And, I really am pessimistic about this “investigation” in Alaska ever seeing the light of day. Rove and company will derail that one (as they do everything that pertains to the law). As far as I am concerned, he is a sociopath and a felon. And as far as Bush/Cheney go-for the love of God I don’t understand why these two clowns aren’t behind bars? Other than they’ve given the finger to Congress and the American people over and over with their “we’re above the law” beliefs. For those of us old enough to remember, they make Nixon look like an angel. Any other administration, Republican or Democrat, in the history of of our nation, that broke as many laws as they have would’ve had the book thrown at them!

Some people will vote for Palin but the electors elect the president. That is McCain’s problem.

They will be Voting for Palin, he’s getting Votes for bringing her aboard, if they can somehow muster enough to get the fix, as they did with bush, that state goes to McCain, one doesn’t do a Separate VP Vote, you Vote the Ticket, so i have no idea what your trying to say!!!

Take a look at this quote…

Um, I think the Republicans are a little bit (1) ignorant (2) full of themselves.

Let’s see I can name 2 right of the top of my head — Rosa Parks, Geraldine Ferraro.

It would be so laughable if it wasn’t so sad….

———————————————————
FROM THE ARTICLE:

Many of her remarks yesterday echoed her well-received convention speech, including its most successful zingers. Both candidates continued their zesty self-introduction as a reform ticket ready for a confrontation with “pork-barrelers, lobbyists, and special interests,” as McCain put it.

“John McCain doesn’t run with the Washington herd, and that’s just one more reason to take the maverick of the Senate and put him in the White House,” Palin said. Palin’s presence and high praise – she called McCain “the only great man in this race” – seemed to invigorate his stump speech, which was forceful and crisp and filled with adoration for his new political companion.

“Isn’t this the most marvelous running mate in the history of this nation?” McCain asked the crowd, before commenting on some Palin family quirks, such as her husband’s snow machine racing. “Could I mention her husband Todd? That guy is crazy.”

The Pacific Ocean is traditionally more active than the Atlantic with hurricanes. It’s just that if they don’t hit southern Mexico or Central America, they typically skirt the lower Baja coast and head westward and northward and die out in the cooler waters. Here in So. Cal. we have had “remnants” of tropical storms (former hurricanes) that produce rain in the summer. Our beaches sometimes experience 12-18 ft. waves as they pass just off the coast of Baja.

Just because we make non-definitive observations does not mean we need to “lay off”. Too many lay off this and that got us the Iraq war and its aftermath. The observations are valid. I am not drawing conclusions. The democrats, not wanting to appear weak on national security, chickened out and voted for the Iraq war. You didn’t believe Saddam was such an imminent threat. Clairton, PA is just seven minutes down the river from where I am typing at my keyboard. You may remember it being depicted in the motion picture “The Deer Hunter” which was shot in many places around here and in Mingo Junction, PA.

It says: “Clairton, PA – City of Prayer.”

DrChill, I absolutely agree! From my years back on bbs’s in the late 80’s-to genie, compuserve aol in the early 90’s-to my wifi connection with Sprint today, I’ve never seen a message board so focused and in unison. It gives me a small glimmer of hope.

someone asked me why why I would vote for Obama if he doesn’t support gay marriage (I know he does support civil unions). As a gay male, he thought I would want to have someone in office who supported that. My answer was twofold:

First: Look at the alternative. Neither McCain/Palin support any type of gay union; and while I haven’t seen this, it wouldn’t surprise me that Palin supports amending the constitution to define what marriage is.

Second: for me there are more important issues than gay marriage. Ending the war, fixing this economy, preserving roe v wade, abolishing the patriot act. These are far more important to me than anything else. Republicans govern for what’s best for themselves and want to impose that on others. Democrats govern for what’s best for others. Occasionally those lines get crossed but very rarely.

Obama is not only the best hope for this country right now, he’s our only hope.

Regarding Palin Poll numbers and RandyH (12:53:11) Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”

Question: how are these polls conducted? Via phone? This may sound silly, but is there any chance that people are responding so positively because they’re afraid not to? As I type this, I realize it sounds pretty far out, but several sources have said that “fear of retribution” is one reason people won’t talk. Why not fib to a pollster then? Let’sGetReal,

Everyone that I’ve talked to so far is against McCain/Palin. you have the log cabin republicans (the gay conservative group) but they’re a minority within a minority. I’ve seen the gay community get fired up in a way that they haven’t for a long time. Most were Hillary supporters up to the nomination, with a lot supporting Obama after the DNC. Still, for some reason, Obama isn’t a rallying candidate for the gay community (at least here in Phoenix, I can’t speak for other places).

I can say that lesbians I know are sick to their stomachs over Palin, and she more than anything is motivating them to vote for Obama. I don’t see any saying they like Palin.

They gay community is a fickle bunch-and one reason I avoid getting too involved in gay politics, as they can be too extreme for my tastes.

Having said all that, I don’t see the republicans getting much if any support this election from us.

Not sure if anyone else has already posted about this, but according to an Alaska-based commenter on this CNN story, Sarah’s brother(s) is in jail? Does anyone know if this is true, and, if so, for what crimes and how this might square with her decisions/attitudes/actions toward criminal justice?

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/05/exclusive-the-trooper-behind-trooper-gate

I’m thinking our Sarah is a to-hell-with-’em-and-hang-’em kind of gal! Save the fetuses but fry the bad folk!

Aside from her mention of her sister Heather and the Troopergate sister, I actually haven’t read much about her family, but maybe I’ve missed something that talked about other siblings.

And I agree that her medical records should be released. Andrew Sullivan over at his blog, which is overall great and seems to be a Mudflats fan, is on Biden’s butt about releasing his and will ask every day until he does. I think he should throw Sarah in there, too, while he’s at it. Why should she get different treatment because she’s a woman? Isn’t that … sexist?

Can anyone verify this:

SARAH PALIN SUPPORTS SHOOTING WOLVES AND BEARS
FROM AIRPLANES
Governor is Strong Proponent of Controversial Alaska Program
excerpt:
“Washington, DC – Alaska Governor and GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a strong promoter of the aerial hunting of wolves and bears, a practice that has been condemned by conservationists, scientists and many hunters alike. It involves shooting wolves and bears from the air or chasing them to exhaustion and then landing and shooting them point blank. The animals, shot with a shotgun, usually die a painful death. The hunters involved in the program keep and sell the animals’ pelts.”

Is Sarah the ‘other’ woman ?

There is something more than Sarah Palin being ‘on the ticket’ that disturbs me and I have a feeling that it will backfire on the Republicans.

I know many women (Hillary’s age) that fought for equality, the right to choose, equal pay etc etc. They married, had kids, went back to work and juggled their lives whilst helping to pay the bills so that their husbands could finish their law/medical/whatever degree or build a business. When the ‘successful’ husband got to a ‘certain age’ and had plenty of money the faithful wife was dumped for a younger (newer model) …is this being done politically?

Is Sarah ‘that’ other woman ? How do you women feel ?

Sitting here in Chicago, I am thrilled about the discussions about being an ENGAGED voter this year. The site I’m pushing to anyone who will listen is the League of Women Voters at: http://www.vote411.org/

I’ve been a fan of the League ever since I moved from one state (Michigan) to another (Colorado) and didn’t know where to aim (circa 1993).

Also, to encourage voter rights, I set up a Facebook Group: Vote Early for Barack Obama and Joe Biden!

My personal goal is to get 1,000 members, so please “share” it even if you don’t join.

Please encourage everyone you know to REGISTER, CONFIRM & UPDATE their registration, status police the electoral officials-now-and to VOTE EARLY (subject to local laws).

Well, obvioiusly (some) the Alaskans believe only superficial cow dung. But, this isn’t any different than some of the rest of America.

Did anyone see the FOX NEWS special on Sarah? Unbelievable. You know, I got tired of paying high satellite fees, so I cut down my service…. now I only get FOX NEWS. NOT WORTH IT! I’m going back to my regular channels with more variety of news. The ENTIRE special on Plain was a one-sided view on the “wonder woman” herself. Many, many distortions and just plain lies about controversial aspects of her life.

Then, there were the comments from supporters. The best one was from Geraldine Ferrar (spelling?), former presidential candidate. She said “Some people asked why she doesn’t stay home and take care of her children. What on earth would she do at home? She is a talented woman.” (something close to this). Oh my goodness….WHAT WOULD SHE DO AT HOME? I don’t think it is necessarily sexist for people to wonder about how she manages the kids. I guess she has a lot of family. Good for her, but this is not the case with many women who have very little supports. These issues are at the forefront with many women.

But, the other bigger problem is FOX NEWS complicity in covering up corruption and “spinning” it to their right wing conservative agendas. They are fascists.

Your post made me start to wonder. Was she using one of those empathy bellies at the conference…and did it have metal parts to it?? Metal parts + airport metal detectors = “ma’am, step over here so we can see WHAT is making our machine go off”. Ruh-roh. So the empathy belly gets taken off on the way to the airport??

Sometimes I think the reason people across the board vote for Republicans because I think of the status. We view Republicans as the “Rich”, “Elitist”….and I think most people would like to be a part of that! Others vote for them for various reason…Religious, or the “Whites Only” club.

This is just how I see it.

It was the first thing I thought about too. I posted it on my blog after the announcement. She just sashayed in on McCain’s coattails. No vote, no primaries, a complete stranger to 49 states. But we’re supposed to just say well, if HIllary was OK, Palen’s OK? Um no. And to those of afraid of what “they” might say about us, I couldnl’t give a flying fig. I am a conspiracy theorist. As A Governor of Alaska,

How to buy love:

Not my business, and I’m not complaining. But I’m trying to do the math.
Y’all get one check from the state for the oil revenues – is that right? What was that one $2000 – $3000 bucks. Is that right?
Eligible taxpayers also got rebate checks from the feds, for maybe $300, $600, 1200 – is that right?
Didn’t Palin – Give people in your state an additional $1200 rebate check.
Is that right?

If it is, they don’t care how corrupt or abusive she may be.

She’s helping to pay the bills. What’s not to like???

That’s my analysis of your polling data. I may be all wrong. I don’t think so.

For some people, things are as tough in Alaska as they are anywhere else. Foreclosures, unemployment, credit card debt, lack of health insurance.
Course they approve of her. She gives away money. She buys votes. She’s buying love.

That is pretty far north and I live in the deep dark north of Canada. Of course I dont live by the Atlantic, but I do believe weather patterns for Alaska are similar to here. I would imagine they have some doozy storms of course…any place near an ocean does, but I dont recall hearing about hurricanes there. However, I am no expert.

I have heard two very serious questions asked on various talk shows both by ex military people both were very interesting. This pipeline she has worked so hard to build, I assume it will run through mainly wilderness, How ong is it, and how will they protect it? The guy who brought this up said it wouldn’t take a sophisticated plot to bring the US to it’s knees if this is how we were getting most of our gas, and or natural gas. Just one guy and a stick of dynamite would do the trick.
Second is it really wise to inform the whole world over and over that the son of a vice presidential candidate is leaving for Iraq and the date he is leaving? Isn’t that like painting a target on him for the enemy? What do you all think?

No Phoebe, what happens is the issue goes back to the states. But wealtlhy women will just go their private OB’s for abortions. Surgical or medicinal. Poor woman will be forced to cross state lines or settle for back alley abortionists. Abortion will become a thriving black market, unregulared business. This is what the prolife team wants. The ones whose sons and daughters have not come home from Iraq…or who have been stop lossed 3 or 4 times. They have lived in hell as have the rest of us.

Why would you question the right of citizens to openly search out information on a new candidate….and their right to have a public discourse about it. I think this is wonderful, and I hope it continues long after the election. Its amazing what ordinary people can do when they feel empowered.

Just read the article from LA with the “sambo beat the bitch” comment. The author claims he is having difficulties getting people to speak on the record, and is taking some heat for inability to cite sources.

I think the fear of retribution factor is entirely plausible and should be taken very seriously. People may need to be subpoenaed to feel able to speak up. Anybody who has had first-hand experience with a narcissist in power, or worse yet your boss, will understand how scary and unbelieveable these people can be.

Of course we feel flabbergasted by this, because we’re trying to be rational thinkers, and narcissists are by definition not rational beings, nor are the people around them. They know only what they want, they are so sure about anything, they NEVER say “hmm, you may be right.” They are incapable of understanding or considering another person’s point of view.

Please review the definition of narcissism. Just Google it, for the psychiatric definition. Palin fits this model. They can be very appealing people, they often garner accolades for being a “straight shooter”- “no-nonsense” and they can be very, very convincing. However, when things start to unravel, she’ll go down, and she’ll be the type to say “if I go down then you’re all going down!”

Certainly the rank and file line staff in her office would be scared into silence, but so too would other powerful people around her. It’s not just little people who fear her.

Rabbler, yes, I believe that the Bush administration brought a good many young Republican women into high levels of the government who drove out good people. Unable to engage with these characters without extreme feelings of rage and frustration, they left out of desperation and despair.

The MO was for such young Repub women was to come into the agency, “clean house” (fire the most experienced civil servants) and replace them with young people they could mold to their particular vision of public service. Think Department of Justice-type tactics. Anyone who was not a “team player, or anyone “resistent to change” got cold-shouldered, ignored, belittled, and bullied. Veteran public servants, good people left government in droves. Sarah Palin appears to be the one who “broke the mold” in this regard. I’ve personally known and sadly worked for a Sarah Palin clone for two years before I left a job I loved.

These people are very, very appealing and extremely adept at pulling the wool over people’s eyes, and can sustain this for long periods of time. IN the long run they attract lawsuits, squander money, lie, lie, lie, lie, and lie some more.
I’ve seen otherwise intelligent people completely hoodwinked by these types. Others, like most of us on this blog, see through this immediately and it is very, very frustrating to realize that other people actually like them, think she’s “great” or “inspriational.” That’s part of the psychiatric dynamic of the narcissist. There’s no arguing with them, they will always win, they are always right, they are charming, etc. They provoke near-homicidal rage in otherwise sane and rational people. Ring a bell anyone? Any mental health specialists out there care to comment?

Let me tell ya’all about Wasilla. It was founded in the 1970s by refugees from Anchorage who found that oil-booming city becoming too confining for their “freedoms”. When Anchorage enacted zoning and land use regs, the worst of the whackos fled for the Valley, especially Wasilla. There is very little land use regulation in Wasilla, take a look at Muckraker’s photo tour. Is there any home that doesn’t have at least one junk car or snowmachine in front? Heck, Wasilla recently won the title of “Duct tape capital of the World”, not sure what they use it all for. http://www.ducttapeguys.com/wasilla/index.html
The mantra in Wasilla is “the only good govmint is no govmint”. Many residents have nothing but contempt for anything “imposed” by the state, or worse, federal government, and take pride in flaunting that contempt by ignoring or deliberately violating the law. Drift net fishing without a license (poaching), killing a moose on someone else’s permit (also, poaching), operating unregistered vehicles, etc. … all connected to the Palin family. Heck, Wasillians don’t even want the govmint to tell them what time it is, and a few years back declared their own time zone, 1/2 hour later then the rest of Alaska.

Well as usual I have spent my day reading unknown amount of blogs…however I just ran across this comment from someone at the Newsweek site which has an article written by Patti Davis. If this doesn’t make sense I don’t know what will make sense to these folks who are firmly planted in the McCalin’s world.

“The hush hush surrounding Sara Palin’s pick as VP, without being vetted is a calculated act of the greatest deception to American people to ignore the failure of eight years of Republican Administration. McCain should be ashamed of himself by saying that he put this country first, when he does not care how many Americans have died in war that should not have been authorized. He is urging American people again to stand up and fight wars, stand up and fight wars, stand up and fight war, he chants in his war chant. Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, again and again expecting a different result. When I see McCain I see an insane, McInsane.”

All credit to Drdike. Thank you for summing up what I couldn’t put into words.

Big Hugs to all you Mudflaters…word is out. Even on the gossip blogs. The tide of commenters who were in favor of Palin have dropped off. Mostly, un-scientific quote here, 3-1 in favor of Obama. Take it from a shrink, Sarah Palin has a serious personality disorder. She is too f’ing stupid and blind to see how she is being used and manipulated. How her entire family is being used. She deserves what she is going to get.

McCain exhibits the initial onset of dementia. He is nearly as old as my dad. I love my dad but there is noo way in hell I would want him running anything, let alone the US of A.

Their large flock is a group of ignorant, selfish, shortsighted, and frightened sheep. In fact that whole RNC was downright disturbing. They truly think that they can say whatever, whenever, make up facts, change history, remake events, point blame at everyone else and then sit down to a steak dinner, red wine, and chuckle.

Wicked good articles on the NYT web site. One of Frank Rich’s best ever, with the cautionary conclusion I have been feeling, as have other Mudpups. William Safire, I think, lives in a universe parallel to mine.

Miemaw from Texas – re yours above about the 3000 and 600 and 1200… in some places that would be called bribery or vote buying. I’m surprised no one from the oil industry has commented about how it looks like, walks like and quacks like extortion.

avahome – if you look at a prior mudflats blog entry you will find some good stuff on how Palin views aerial shooting. Also, http://www.green-blog.org has a couple of entries on Palin’s “awful environmental record.”

DAR – there’s probably not much worse than some cranky wank complaining about people having opinions. not much for the bill of rights or the basic concepts within the constitution, are ya? Got anything positive to contribute or were you just looking to keep your handtowel dry?

Alaskan independence from the U.S.

What is a secessionist doing at the center of American politics?”

There’s a new campaign program at the Obama/Biden website: Neighbor to Neighbor.

You can sign up online to volunteer to do phone banking and/or door-to-door (depends on the state which choices there are).

http://mybarackobama.com/n2n

I’ve decided to channel my shock at this VP pick into action like several of the other posters here. Gonna start phone calling tomorrow. If I do 10 phone calls a day, for 50 days, that’s 500 people!

Cynthia, TX (17:59:37) :

Dar, please describe in great detail what hell is and I mean very graphic details!

Ah didn’t think you could because I don’t know anyone who has gone there come back and written a complete thesis on the experience.
———————————-

Oh, here’s an even handier link:

http://swedenborg.newearth.org/hh/hh00toc.html

I guess Sarah’s Wal-Mart Check Out Line End Of Days School of Theology Pastor is just not into Swedenborg or he would have clued her in that the worst spiritual state in Downtown Cosmic Hell is being a LIAR!

Lia, liar pants on…well…fire.

I had a very interesting talk with a very close female friend of mine tonight via Skype (she’s on another Continent) who is a kick ass very, very good esoteric Astrologer. She has an old 1980’s DOS computer program that she has completely mastered over the years that she is a genius with. (She does not like the fancier Windows ones of today that she says say too much fluff. She like to interpret the raw naked data.) Even if you don’t accept any of this system as valid, she is absolutely astounding in her readings.

When we first met she nailed my whole life perfectly. When we did the overlay thing specialty of hers and she decoded our combined energies we named ourselves a nice combination of our first names that mimicked “Caligula” as our combined entity Cosmic “Brangelina Entity”. This has pretty much held true as we have discovered over time in our various undertakings the potential for evil between us in inflicting damage on the world! Anyway we had some fun punching the dates in tonight and her telling me what she sees in the overlay of the two of them in her system of overlay interpretation of two people’s horoscopes she has developed over the years.

HIM: 29 August 1936
HER: February 11, 1964

(I did not write down the other place/time birth info she researched that is needed to do a reading but it is available on the Web because the Astrologers across the world are going ape s**t over this BIG TIME in their analysis. The best discussions she said are on the Astrology links on belief.net)

Her read on Caribou Barbie is that she is a hyper Aquarius narcissistic personality with a huge conjunction of FIVE things (I can’t remember what they were as I don’t know much about this) in ONE HOUSE. My friend says she is, therefore, by this Cosmic pattern, totally psycho. She says Saracuda has no aspect where someone learns from opposition in life. She has been this way from birth. My friend says this aspect of her chart is STRIKING and she has rarely seen it in anyone she has done a chart for. She says it means Palin cannot cope AT ALL with opposition of ANY KIND in her cosmic energies. She is obstinate to the point of absolute blindness. This might actually start to show up as actual conflict with John McCain HIMSELF at some point! (Uh oh. Remember the rabbitt in “Fatal Attraction”…) Right now she is absolutely on top of the world. She thinks she has attained this from, well, being Sarah. Right now it is all about HER and HER SUCCESS. But she has ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE of what she is getting into. She is being used by very powerful forces and is not even aware of it. Right now she is just a contestant on some internal “American Idol” show in her mind. And she has won!

My friend says the “soul mate” vibe from Mac Daddy is some kind of Mercury thing going on between both of them. They both have this aspect. I wish I could explain more. My friend can explain it in stunning detail. She is really, really good. She has personally done readings for some name people that you all would recognize. With this joint Mercury thing going on somewhere in their two lonely souls they are reaching out to each other in their now new special little world as Prez and Foxy VP. I heard they now have changed the name of the bus from the “Straight Talk Express” to something else but I missed hearing what it is. Does anyone know what the new name of the bus is? That just MIGHT be psychologically very telling? Pretty neat ! How many rock stars have ever changed the name of their tour bus for a new groupie they just met! That is pretty heady! But back to that mercury thing of two people now being in their own special little world… Uh. That Mercury thing has happened to me – and maybe all of us – at least once in life back in Junior High. Sometimes it doesn’t work out…

She says the energies between them are actually quite good. But she is definitely a psycho. And they could quite easily go off a cliff together.

Gulp.

More to come as I learn more.

Word up about the book banning attempt: there are only two sources who know what was involved – Lipstick Sarah (and she sure as hades ain’t gonna talk about that) and the librarian who she tried to fire. I tried emailing Anne Kilkenny but the email addy provided bounced as “unknown.” Which now makes me wonder about the veracity of that entire letter.

Anyone know the librarian, if she’s alive, or if she’s willing to discuss that particular issue?

I really dislike phone banking. Don’t like making the calls and I don’t like receiving them. But one thing about being a county committee member who also volunteers for the Obama campaign is that I can take my name off the call list. …

I much prefer canvassing door to door and will be out and about just as soon as it dries up from all of Hanna’s rain we got today.

Well, astrology is sort of BS but it is interesting that even the astrologers understand the obvious narcissistic core. The key part is that they can’t handle criticism. But remember, they’re very, very good at what they do and very, very disarming.

Bush himself displays these characteristics. It’s generally translated as “firm resolve.”

Just my last input for this night…I’m from Colorado. Colorado Springs is mostly Republican. Focus of the Family has their home there. So from what I see in 2 days of campaigning they have just hit places that are safe and sure to gather the crowd which would already vote for them anyway. Watched her speech..same ol’ Sarah. So, when my hometown newspaper says they drew a big crowd they only drew a big crowd because of Focus on the Family.

Night to all you wonderful people. Keep on sharing. Keep on protecting what Democracy truly stands for. See y’all tomorrow. Too addicted to stay away for more than a nights sleep. LOL!

Way upstream Marti recommended watching the address and Q&A from both Obama and McCain on http://www.aarp.org/. It’s really a stark difference. Some of what he says is very confusing. Here’s my question:

If McCain has been such a superb US Representative and Senator, then why are things such a mess? He’s had plenty of opportunity to introduce legislation on health care, energy, the environment and more. For 6 of the past 8 years while the Republicans have had the White House, they also controlled Congress. What, that wasn’t enough? Why would McCain being in the White House be any different?

More importantly, why in the world would anyone believe him? Why believe Sarah? It’s just nuts.

6 09 2008

Meleana,
Well, I am a licensed psychologist (though currently not practicing because I am home with three young children. I have worked primarily with children and families but have also worked with adults (including Vietnam Vets- don’t get me started on the mental health issues of our vets from Iraq, Afghanistan, etc…and how a POW named McCain- I know most of you are not aware of his POW status- has not supported their needs). You summed up the narcissistic personality well…the scary part is how good they can be at fooling some (many?) people and how long it can take for the charm to unravel. Their charm, if one is under their spell, is very seductive. It would be unprofessional to diagnose someone from afar, so that is all I will say about that.
Putting on a different hat- the hat of a fellow citizen, a mother and an advocate for children, I felt “itchy” from the very first day McCain introduced his VP choice and I watched her speech. I kept waiting for info that would help it make sense. I guess I have a penchant for making sense of things. In fact I think it was the next day or the day after that I found Mudflats…just trying to make sense of things…you all have helped with that. And the sense of community is comforting. I saw Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Hannity snickering together on Fox too (another blogger mentioned this). It reminded me of snobs sharing their bigoted views at a country club. I make myself watch Fox sometimes to see what their viewers (love the sheeople comment earlier) are being fed. Critical thinking, the ability to reflect about self and others, understanding another’s point of view- these qualities are so vital.

Now for some interesting reading… I was looking up the papers in Arizona to add (and email) and me thinks McCain might be in some serious trouble there too….

They printed a AP article about Obama comments about Palin and earmarks and the comment section below sure is interesting… a sample:

SnudgeSep-06 @ 2:47 PM
Only one candidate in this race has never requested or accepted an earmark……John McCain…….Fact

__________________________________________________

to snudge:
McCain’s claim is false. In 2006, the senator teamed up with fellow Arizona senator Jon Kyl (R) to funnel $10 million toward the University of Arizona for an academic center named after the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. Even Arizona lawmaker, Rep. Jeff Flake (R), said he was planning to “lean against the measure.” The National Taxpayers Union, another traditional McCain ally, questioned why the senator was making federal taxpayers foot the bill for the center.

In 2003, McCain also slipped $14.3 million into a defense appropriations bill to
create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. As Roll Call reported in 2003, this project violated McCain’s own anti-pork rhetoric:

The only problem is the project to acquire more land near the base was not requested by President Bush or fully authorized by the Senate Armed Services Committee – two of McCain’s criteria for identifying so-called ‘pork.

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), a notorious porker, was overjoyed that McCain had joined his side. “One man’s pork is another man’s alternate white meat,” said Stevens. “If he asked for it, we put it in.””
______________

Snudge – Central Arizona Project is one of the biggest pork projects of all time. Without it, you wouldn’t be typing from your computer in PHOENIX OR TUCSON.

A senator that does nothing for his home state is nothing more than a carpet bagger. Isn’t that something you all criticized hillary for when she first ran for Senate?

yes…lies and speeches with no substance do get very old..the lines that are repeated over and over, “Yes WE Can”, strike a cord and inspire.
I am sooo surprised that this ticket, McCain/Palin, is competitive. SHOCKED is more like it. AND i dont understand this coddling (sorry spelling is bad) of SP. She brought it on…she should be interviewed and be on the news circuit….thats how we, the nation, get to know if we want a person “a heartbeat away fromt he presidency” (sp?). Its unbelievable to see even some of the media whom I have grown to admire be taken in…..these are seasoned people……i really just dont get it…..Its unimaginable to me that someone selects a VP who has to get comfortable with answering questions from the press. Its crazy to see some very respectable newspeople go along with it, some are not, but some are. sorry Obama, at this time, I am the one that doesnt get it.
When I hear either McSame or SP do their repetitive speeches the words “they just dont get it” keeps entering my mind.
What I found interesting is that after the news broke today about Freddie Mac and Fannie May (I hope those were the write names, am still new to this) Obama came out for a press conference. He spoke at length of how he would look at it…hmmmm presidential?????? And what i hear is a few lines about it in the McCain/SP stump speech consisting of just a couple of sentences.
Wow….The media really wants Obamas opinions, i do too!! Where was the president. Sorry bout the rambling…..
This coddling is really getting old….this taking this ticken seriously is insane! And yet, we are facing a close race in this election….I just dont get it. I know the world is looking at us and saying….its a no brainer…here at these blogs…we know its a no brainer…but yet its a close race?
I do know….Obama/Biden supporters really need to fight this, like the other ticket is formidable…because I remember our former “President Elect Al Gore” and the crap from that….and i remember myself, shamefully, thinking…”Bush wont get reelected”…boy was i wrong….i wasnt involved….but now i am.
Thanks for this blog, its refreshing to see accuracy (sp?) and how everyone here avoids rumor and tries to stick with the issues and checks out the facts.

In reference to the link earlier to the many issues facing rural alaska that have not been dealt with by the Palin administration http://www.palinsalaska.com/

It is so true!! Those of you not from Alaska have no idea the extent to which much of Alaska more closely resembles a third world country than part of a developed nation. Much fun has been made of Alaska and alaskans and our quaint values and odd ways–shooting moose, snowmachines dog teams, etc. etc. but the state, its people, and its politics are much more complex than that. We have incredibly serious issues in this state–of poverty, many communities without water, sewage facilities, no money to buy fuel oil to run generators to provide power for electricity, covert and overt racism, failing educational systems. I could go on…and on and on. The current administration reflects the personality of the governor–a lot of show and no go. Attractive, nice legs, charismatic, but no substance and no real accomplishments that have improved the lot of the citizens of Alaska. I have lived in Alaska for over 30 years and there have been times when the situation looked as grim (Murkowski administration, for example) but I have never felt more worried about the future.

We need change in Washington DC and we also need change in Alaska. I am not sure how we are going to get the change we need (let alone deserve) but I can say for sure that I am going to do everything I can manage to get Obama elected in November and to impeach Palin as soon as possible.

Also, as a PS, those of us Alaskans that don’t live in the greater Anchorage area (which includes Wasilla) have a saying “Anchorage–only 40 miles from Alaska”.

Hi HamletsMill I’m across the river and south of you in Petrolia.

About Oprah .. The Guardian has a good article/explanation at http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/07/uselections2008.sarahpalin1

The Right was trying to bully her into having Palin for exposure and a soft interview.

Quick lesson on polls:
Polls are based on statistical samples of the population being examined. Roughly the samples should reflect age, race, sex, political party, likely to vote, voted in past, or whatever else is of interest. These samples are supposed to reflect the best models that can predict voter preferences. The better the sampling, the better the results. Theoretically. Then there is the issue of the questions asked. The way the questions are asked can slant the results to a degree. There are lots of statistical things that can be done with the results to try and clean them up. These polls have been collected by phone for some time. Now with cell phones, call screening, answering machines it is difficult to get a GOOD sample. Some polls such as Rasmussen use robocalls. ‘Nuf said.

What you look for are state by state polls in the next months. The election is won state by state through the electoral college. Many states have special models for their polling. Models, however, are built on history. If the election is significantly different, the models aren’t so good.

Sweetie muckracker: I ( and we ALL) who appreciate you beyond the pale, hope that you soon put up a PayPal site (at the very least, if you reject all adverts) as you have already gone above and beyond your patriotic duty to inform — and remind us that the Constitution of the United States is alive and well. We NEED you . The MSM — the most MOST important 4th Estate — has abandondoned the populace in support of the Corporations. We have such a short time — we just alll hope you get a nap.

Regarding Wasilla Library books censorship, and e-mail response from Wasilla mayor…
The following is copied from a commenter on the Daily Show site (“Sarah Palin Gender Card” video”:

“Jon — It’s YOU!!!! Of the books that someone has tried to ban from the Wasilla library, America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Steward Remained on shelf, 2007 Dude! It’s so ON! *** From Daily Kos: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/6/131034/6917?detail=f *** I sent this very question to the only contact listed for the Wasilla Library, and received this reply. This reply inadvertently and indirectly supports the story that Sarah Palin did NOT go through proper protocols. ==================reply Systems Administrator to undisclosed-re. show details Sep 4 (2 days ago) Reply from Systems Administrator to undisclosed-recipients date Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 7:34 PM subject Re: Request for Information hide details Sep 4 (2 days ago) Reply We at the city of Wasilla have received many emails and requests for information about “banned or censured” books at the Wasilla Library while former Mayor Palin was in office. We have no records of any books being “banned or censured” ever. Below is the policy to request reconsideration of library materials: Reconsideration Requests of Library Materials In accordance with the Wasilla Public Library Collection Development Policy, the library, “…strives to achieve a balanced collection of materials in the major information categories, as well as a fiction collection calculated to satisfy the widest possible variety of tastes. All viewpoints and opinions on controversial subjects will be represented whenever possible… Wasilla Public Library recognizes the right of every citizen to read and gather information, and his or her right to freedom from censorship by other persons. Many books are controversial and any given item may offend some persons. However, selections for this library will not be made on the basis of anticipated approval or disapproval, but solely on the merits of the material in relation to the building of the collection and to serving the interests of all readers. This library holds censorship to be a purely individual matter and declares that – while anyone is free to reject for himself books and other materials of which he does not approve – he cannot exercise this right of censorship to restrict the freedom of others.” Should a Matanuska-Susitna Library Network card holder request the reconsideration of an item in the library’s collection, there is a step-by-step process which is followed. The first step in the process is the patron speaking with the library director, who listens to the patron concerns and explains how materials are selected for the library’s collection. It is the policy of Wasilla Public Library that all challenged materials remain in circulation until a final decision is reached and a challenged item may go through the reconsideration process only once within a twelve month period. Our records indicate the following actions requested by library patrons; Year of Challenge Item Challenged Result Pre-1986 (exact date unknown but the letter references the ‘card catalog’) Angel Dust Blues by Todd Strasser Creation of “Young Adult” section in library and placement of item in section 1986 Bumps in the Night by Harvey Allard Remained on shelf (has since been discarded for lack of use) 2005 America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Steward Remained on shelf 2007 The Abduction by Mette Newth Remained on shelf Thank you for your interest in Wasilla we hope that this has helped to satisfy your curiosity. Here I go again, being a scold. There is no possibly way Palin asked to ban those specific books, especially John Stewart’s. It was published in 2005, when Palin held no office. This misinformation HURTS our cause. Don’t spread it around. We don’t know exactly what she wanted to do, and if we attribute things to her that are not verified, and are indeed false, it hurts us, not her, and especially not McCain. Please guys, I know things look bad, but we have to be cautious, and careful. Unlike John McCain.

Where’s the bounce?

Sarah Palin has been greated by McCain and the GOP as America’s new messiah, and have preached ad nauseum about the “Palinomania” sweeping the nation.

Yet the only really remarkable bounce isn’t so much a “bounce” as a “tanking,” as the Dow Jones plummetted starting the day after Palin’s speech. Any traditional “bounce” which one would expect following a political convention–certainly one in which a new Republican Messiah was annointed–is, at the most generous, called “smallish.”

I believe this vividly demonstrates how completely out of touch John McCain and the GOP are with Americans, their values, and their concerns, and I believe that this disconnect from the rest of America can be laid at the feet of Ronald Reagan, who was the architect of the unholy alliance between the GOP and America’s politicochristian right.

When Ronald Reagan bent knee to the politicochristian right in order to get elected president he created a monster of leviathan proportions.

As the GOP has become more dependent on the politicochristian right bloc of voters, nutballs like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson, by controlling the votes of their religious followers, have been turned into demagogues who, by their control of the GOP, are now controlling a large part of our national agenda.

Perhaps the most damage by Reagan’s avaristic sale of the constitutional separation of church and state is to the GOP itself. As the demagogues’ control in the GOP increased, the dog lost control of the tail and, indeed, its own entire being, as the tail took over control of the dog. The ironic part is that the GOP aided the politicochristian right every step of the way to its control of the GOP.

McCain’s panciked pick of Palin, who the GOP obviously had not really vetted at all prior to McCain’s announcement, is a good example of how the politicochristian right now is damaging the GOP, the very vehicle to American theocracy they have worked so hard to bring under their control, by it’s narrow-focused view of what is needed to win an election and, by result, control America.

According to many reports, McCain’s choice of Joe Lieberman as a VP candidate was virtually a done deal, all over but the phone call to Lieberman announcing he was the one. But McCain was FORCED by the politicoreligious-right power mongers (who, like demented marionettes, pull the strings of the GOP in such a way that they are ensuring the crippling of the Party) to name someone who was not his first choice, nor even his second, third or fourth choice. If McCain named any of his own picks (who, in one way or another, did not pass the politicochristian right’s litmus test for candidate suitability) these powerful religious political brokers would turn the convention floor into a war zone with an outright battle in an attempt to force McCain to choose a candidate that would suit the politicochristian-right demagogues that the GOP so stupidly empowered.

(And it should be noticed by everyone that the politicochristian right expects the GOP and all of its voters to march in lock-step unison under the PCR’s direction on religious-social issues, but if a GOP candidate–ironically, one who calls himself a “maverick”–believes another option is best for the party and our country, the PCR is ready to destroy the party to get its way.)

What we are now witnessing is not only a case of the tail wagging the dog, but the tail–in its bid to control the dog–consuming and being willing to destroy the dog if it doesn’t get its way.

The fact that this was leviathan, consuming everything it touches, was created by the GOP, the creature that the leviathan is now willing to destroy, is of small comfort to the rest of us who must watch America become even more destabilized by the mutual avarice and greed of the GOP and the politicochristian right leviathan to which it gave birth.

Because, when the politicochristian right controls the GOP, as long as the GOP can continue to win elections, it controls a large part of America’s government and public policies.

Clearly, it’s time for America to take a stand against the PCR, a truly subversive group which is willing to destroy America to get its way.

About polls…the way polling and interpretations of the results are currently used in politics, it is very difficult (actually, mostly impossible) to assess the polls for validity.

This website is a good stepping off point for the very basics you should demand from polling groups before you believe their polls. The information is geared towards journalists, but is suitable for everyone.

“20 Questions A Journalist Should Ask About Poll Results” http://www.ncpp.org/?q=node/4

But that’s just the beginning. Anyone who has taken a college statistics courses can tell you that there are many, many places along the way in constructiong, executing, interpreting, and applying to a specific question where the outcome can be jeopardized–either on purpose or by ignorance. Polls are extremely easy to manipulate to produce whatever results you want and, since there are no laws requiring transparency in polling, most polling groups give little–if any–information on how the poll was conducted or constructed.

Polls have a tremendous amount of power in politics and elections. Like it or not, humans are to some extent herd animals, and are very influenced by what the majority of others are doing or what the majority of others believe, especially if the particular human in question is unsure on their own opinions or beliefs. Political groups and others use this herd mentality to shamelessly impact the outcomes of elections.

In 2004 I spent a few weeks analyzing polls and was shocked at what I found. I have written an analysis of it and updated it today. I don’t want to post it here wtihout permission because it is a long article. If I can, I’ll upload it to my website tomorrow and at least post the link.

Let me just say in closing that I believe major polling groups should be suspected because, at least in 2004, when I called and wrote them asking for basic information about the way they conducted their polls, all refused to give any information. Zogby was downright pissy about it.

If their polls are on the up-and-up, they should not be afraid to describe how the poll was constructed, conducted and analyzed. That they refuse to do so is very worrisome, IMO.

This election cycle, there are some polling groups which are posting some information. The LATimes has always been pretty forthright about how their polls are conducted, even giving the polling questions, and they continue to be open in their polling information. IN addition, their director of polling is very accessible and has answered every question I have posed to her.

Perhaps the most important issue regarding whether polling reflects what the people who pay for the polls say they do is this: the majority of polling groups are not making the expensive effort to incorporate people with their only phone contact by cell phone in their respondents. Since, by far, young voters are registering Democrat and supporting Obama, this one fact alone should cast great suspicion on polling results.

For a discussion of this particular issue, visit the Q&A at http://www.factcheck.org (http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/are_polls_skewed_because_many_people_only.html).

About the banning books vs. no banning books issue…

IMO, it doesn’t matter if Sarah Palin asked the librarian to ban specific books.

As mayor, Sarah Palin had a huge amount of power, and the power differential between Palin (as mayor) and the librarian was large. Simply by asking such a question, Palin can be seen as attempting to intimidate the librarian.

From what I have read, there was an outcry from the locals, supporting the librarian. So it could be possible that, if specific books were not asked to be banned, it was only because Palin was herself intimidated by the voters and so dropped the issue.

You are so right…I agree that when people hear information on polls results they can send mix message…

I have the good fortune of taking a statistics course for my Accounting Degree…

I think the message can cause people to feel their candidate do not have a chance or it can motivate people to either positive or negative …

I wish they would leave the polls out of the equation…until the day of the election…

Thank you for your personal insight…

McCain and SP have no shame…

They steal Obama theme for “Change”

They people songs to use…even when ask to please not use our “Song”

How can any voter think they will listen or care about your needs or suffer …

is beyond common sense…

But people seen to not use their common sense…but the I remember what my mother has told me all my life…

Her father told her that some people are born with book knowledge and some with common sense…and some are born with a little of both…

I feel very blessed…I grew up in a house with a mother that skip a grade and sisters and brothers that was straght “A” students …

and then their was me…a “C’s” and “D’s”…I was good in math and made straight “A’s” in only one class…but that was the turning point…

But the simple fact is that the people that are falling for the flat out lies have to be book knowledge or just not have the ability or the desire to know the truth…

Well all we can do is keep pointing out the lies and people will start pay attention…

yes…lies and speeches with no substance do get very old..the lines that are repeated over and over, “Yes WE Can”, strike a cord and inspire.

I share your pain and confusion…

I have stop in my tracks from writing my tax guide for the up coming tax years and doing a part time job search…I blessed to be retired and have some money coming in and the ability to work for myself…

But nothing is more important then my daughter future who is 24-years old…and the future of people I don’t know and never met…but I know and here about the suffering…

We have to keep fighting…
We have to get people to vote early and to request a asentee ballot…so republican can not stop you from voting on election days

By closing polls early…
Changing polling location…
Remove names from voter register…they will try every trick in book to steal votes..

They are lying to our face…
Stealing Obama theme for “change” and stealing people songs…

I’m reading you instead of the ADN now, are you my neighbor? I love your blog, sending it to everyone I know. I’m getting exhausted responding to blogs all day, I get seriously annoyed at how little they’re covering the real nasties, but then the less they say about her the better. Has she actually spoken in her own language (palinease) since being nominated?
