Last week - prescient black cloud appears over Republican booth at the State Fair

I’ll be heading back home to Anchorage today, and passing through Wasilla…Alaska’s new most famous (or infamous) small town and home of Governor Sarah Palin.  I’ve got camera in hand and will post a “Valley Gallery” tonight.  I’ve already got some great shots, and I think you’ll enjoy the virtual tour.

Just talked to a Valley resident who works for the state and is a registered Independent.  I asked, “So, what do you think of our new Veep candidate?”  The answer (after chuckling and shaking his head) “What a way to commit suicide.”  He’d just gotten back from the Alaska State Fair.  That’s where Palin was when she got “the call” from John McCain asking her to be his running mate.  The first run of McCain/Palin T-shirts were already sold out.  But there were a few bumper stickers left….right next to the ones that say “Liberalism is a Curable Disease”.  Nothing like a little brotherly love in the Alaska Republican booth.

This is just up on the BBC website:

“The BBC’s Justin Webb in St Paul, Minnesota, where the Republicans’ national convention is taking place this week, says the news [of Bristol Palen’s pregnancy] will certainly be a talking point but may not damage Mrs Palin’s standing.

She was brought on board to appeal to social conservatives, our correspondent says, and they may respect the decision by her daughter to keep the baby and to marry the father.

However, some people in the party who already had concerns about the lack of knowledge about Mrs Palin’s record may fear what other revelations lie in wait, our correspondent adds. “

And this is just in from the Washington Post (good call, BBC):

Palin Was a Director of Embattled Sen. Stevens’s 527 Group

By Matthew Mosk

ST. PAUL — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Palin’s relationship with Alaska’s senior senator may be one of the more complicated aspects of her new position as Sen. John McCain’s running mate; Stevens was indicted in July 2008 on seven counts of corruption.

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

Stevens had been helpful to Palin during her run for governor, swooping in with a last moment endorsement. And the two filmed a campaign commercial together to highlight Stevens’s endorsement of Palin during the 2006 race.

Shortly after Palin was announced as McCain’s vice presidential pick, the ad was removed from her gubernatorial campaign web site. It remains available on YouTube.

A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., has accused Stevens of concealing on financial disclosure statements lucrative gifts from the now-defunct oil company Veco and its top executives. At one point, Veco employees and contractors jacked up the senator’s mountainside house on stilts and added a new first floor, with two bedrooms and a bathroom, the indictment says.

Stevens became the first sitting U.S. senator to face criminal charges in 15 years. He has adamantly denied the allegations.

At the time Stevens revealed the existence of the 527 group — a type of independent political corporation named for its the section of the tax code — ethics experts questioned whether it was appropriate.

The Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call reported that several experts called the group an example of the fine legal line between a legal effort to conduct political activity and then-new prohibitions against raising unlimited soft-money.

Board members of Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service were legally allowed to raise as much money as they wanted from corporations or unions or unlimited donations from individuals — all of which would have been illegal for Stevens to do himself.

At the time of the 2004 Roll Call report, Stevens’s involvement was limited to some conversations with the group’s board.

“He has just agreed that we can use his name,” Gloria Shriver, the founder of the group and wife of Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich, told the newspaper. “He did say that we could use [his name] and wished us the very best.”

During her interview, Shriver left open the option that Stevens might help with some fundraising, the newspaper reported.

There is no record in IRS filings as to how much the group eventually raised.

A Palin spokeswoman did not provide a response to questions about the 527 this morning.

Gotta love Google. Its saves everything. Of course if McCain knew how to use a computer he might know this already.

You have to give credit to Sue Williams from the prior thread.

She knew Bristol was pregnant.

That doesn’t necessarily prove that Trig wasn’t also her baby (back to back births happen all the time, and we know for sure she was/is sexually active), but it does appear that Sue WIlliams on these comment threads was the first to put the truth out, before the campaign, before the press, and before any bloggers.

Maybe Palin was in fact a setup, a red herring with which to sandbag the Dobson et al fundie nitwit meddlers who’d thought they’d anointed her and “forced her” on McSame. She blows up on the launch pad, and Mork Romney rides in to save the day.

This site is becoming as dear to me as CNN …. breaking news. Keep up the news.

So what on earth is this with the baby? How does anyone explain this? I am getting lost ! If it is indeed Sarah’s baby she was a rather older first time mother and as an RN …. I really question all of this as do others. I would like some answers and I think she needs to have a press conference soon. We experienced 8 years of lies and cover ups and though this is not national security today it might be in January if this lady lies and expects us to belive it. One of Hannity’s biggest talking points was about how she kept Trig.. knowing… so if this is a talking point we need to know as well. Is no one else in Alaska ready to say that this is indeed her child? And who is the father of the next baby in the Palin family? What a year!

The back to back, out of wedlock births actually happened to the teen-aged daughter of a former co-worker of mine. It is a bad thing to mix a sex-obsessed culture with poor sex education.

Just read that Sarah’s Wiki entry was spruced up overnight Thursday by a McCain campaign volunteer, now retired as a Wiki editor. Anyone know how to retrieve the previous one? The NYT is reporting that the changes were, understandably, to make it more politically focused, but it’d be interesting to see what it said before.

LOL, from Salon.com:

Abstinence-only educators

Both Sarah Palin and John McCain back abstinence-only education. No surprises there.

What’s galling is this: When the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, minority teenage mother growing up in some (presumably Democratic) urban area, that pregnancy becomes fodder for lectures from conservatives about bad parenting, the perils of welfare spending and so on. But when the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, white teenager from some small town in a Republican state, that pregnancy is…a celebration of the wonders of God’s magnificence–and choosing life!

There must be some way to see the birth certificate. But the hospital where Trig was born shows no babies born that day. Hmmmmm

Bristol’s just following her mom’s lead. Can’t anyone do simple date math? The Palin’s oldest son was born 20 April 1989 – not quite 8 months after Sarah eloped [29 August 1988]. That whole “no sex until marriage” credo that the GOP trumpets only affects Other People, obviously.

Like mother, like daughter, thinks Bristol!

John McCain’s Dan Quayle

Let’s put things in perspective: The United States faces many problems that threaten our way of life, our standing in the world, and the planet itself: two wars, a recession, an energy quagmire, an overheated planet, a health care crisis, unlawful immigration, and a loss of respect around the world.

Thoughtful Americans agree that this election is one of the most important in American history—the problems are massive, the threats to us are real, the differences between the candidates are great, and our future as a nation may depend on the choice we make for our next president. We need our best and brightest people to lead us into an uncertain future.

In these critical times and with John McCain’s age and past health problems, he called on Sarah Palin to be his vice-president–a first-term governor of Alaska who he met once before he offered her the job— a cynical display of gender politics—a political gimmick and a “laugh our loud” moment that insulted the seriousness of the times in which we live.

Have you ever experienced something and felt confused: suddenly up was down, right was wrong, sane was insane, and you felt the rug was pulled out from under your experience of life? Cognitive Dissonance is the discomfort we feel whenever what we know, value, or believe differs from what we experience.

I felt disoriented when I read that John McCain called Sarah Palin his soul mate. I felt like up was down when Cindy McCain said that Palin has national security experience because Alaska is close to Russia. I felt disoriented with I listened to Republican leaders assert with straight faces that Palin has “good judgment” and is qualified to be president on day one—a requirement McCain said was his first priority in selecting a vice president. Suddenly the Republican attacks on Barack Obama’s lack of foreign policy experience became disingenuous.

I think David Gergen, advisor to many presidents, felt crazy too: “But what surprises me so much is that John McCain again and again and again has said the transcendent issue of our times is the fight against terrorism and that we live in a dark, dangerous world. And the most important thing is to have a commander in chief that’s ready on day one. So, here to reach out—and he’s criticized Barack Obama as not being ready—to reach out to Sarah Palin who has no national security experience, no national security exposure, and say you’re my standby and I’m 72 years old and I’ve had some bouts with melanoma….”

I began to feel more aligned with reality when Palin’s mother-in-law—in a moment of candor–said, “I’m not sure what she brings to the ticket other than she’s a woman and a conservative. Well, she’s a better speaker than McCain,” Faye Palin said with a laugh.

I felt a little saner when I read a commentary in the Anchorage Daily News: “We’re not sure she’s a competent governor of Alaska. And yet McCain, who is no spring chicken, has decided she’s the best choice to replace him as president if he should win and then fall afoul of the Grim Reaper. Sarah Palin?

Americans are not as dumb as politicians think: A Gallup poll shows that Palin is seen as less qualified to be president than any vice presidential selection since Dan Quayle in 1988.

Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin was kind when she described McCain’s first presidential decision as “a strange choice.” I think it is an irresponsible act of by a man incredibly immature for his 72 years. McCain put his country last at a moment in history that calls for Americans to put excellence first. I hope for the good of the country that this folly fails.

In Wa State and most others, selected birth certificate information is public. While there’s a confidential portion of the birth record that will not be disclosed, the fact of the birth, the hospital, the parents names and addresses, and other information is a matter of public record. It should be relatively easy to obtain such information by going to the Vital Records office in the State Department of Health. The same information is generally published in local newspapers.

While the preponderence of evidence at the moment suggests that Trig is Sarah’s child, we need to get to the bottom of this quickly so we’re not distracted from other serious questions about this woman’s character and judgment.

The Anchorage Daily News’ article on the Bristol Palin pregnancy:

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/512560.html

According to the article, “Palin was refusing to speak to the press about it today.”

And:

Reporters at the Republican national convention hammered McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt about the Palin pregnancy during a press conference. All Schmidt would say is Palin and McCain had discussed the pregnancy and considered it to be a private matter.

He wouldn’t say if they talked about it before McCain picked Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

“I answered that question nine times,” he said.

This blog rocks! Am I your first fan from New Jersey?

Now, I would never, ever stoop so low as to judge a human being by the circumstances of his/her birth or conception, and I’ve lived my entire adult life refusing to believe that an individual’s personal life has anything to do with his/her ability to serve in public office. But the Conservatives wouldn’t let up. They never stopped making an election issue out of people’s religious lives, sex lives, marital relationships, sexual orientation, and now it’s common practice to choose a candidate (or a running mate) based on how pure and holy s/he seems. THEY created this culture, so here I go – after a couple of decades I’m jumping on the band wagon:

I am going on record to say that I do not trust, and would not vote for, anybody who would encourage a 17-year-old girl to get married. This is not an individual whom I would want to be a heartbeat away from appointing the Supreme Court Justices who will be deciding issues of reprductive rights for decades to come.

AKM — I doubt you have time to read all comments, but I just wanted to add my congrats on a really entertaining and informative blog. Unsurprisingly, I found it via googling for Palin, but I’ve read a number of your earlier posts and enjoyed them greatly.

As it happens, I spent a year at Clear a LONG time ago (71-72, really bad winter) when I was in the AF. That was before the North Slope, so I’m sure things are much different now, but what seems unchanged is the general political-values ambiance. The government always struck me as being sort of like Boys and Girls State, but with real money and real power. Now with even more money.

It must be a continuing challenge to be a progressive in a sea of red, but I remember enough about the environment to know why people fall in love with it. Best of luck. I look forward to following your story.

The AP is now covering the Bridge Flap:

Critics: Palin used ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ for gain

By MARY PEMBERTON, Associated Press Writer Sun Aug 31, 7:03 PM ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin was for the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere” before she was against it, a change of position the GOP vice presidential running mate ignored Saturday when she bragged about telling Congress “thanks but no thanks” to the pork barrel project.

Federal funds for the $398 million bridge were tacked into an appropriations bill as an earmark, the practice by which members of Congress get special funding for pet projects. Sen. John McCain opposes earmarks as an avenue for pork barrel and special interest spending.

After McCain introduced her as his choice for vice president on the Republican ticket, Palin talked about her reform credentials, and said she stopped the bridge project as part of an effort to end of earmarking in appropriations bills.

The Alaska bridge pushed by Sen. Ted Stevens became a symbol of congressional misuse of tax dollars. It would have connected the town of Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport on it. Ferries and water taxis serve the island now.

“I have championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress,” Palin said in her vice presidential campaign debut in Dayton, Ohio. “In fact, I told Congress, I told Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ on that Bridge to Nowhere.”

“If our state wanted a bridge, I said we’d build it ourselves,” she said.

She didn’t talk that way when she was running for governor. The Anchorage Daily News quoted her on Oct. 22, 2006, as saying yes, she would continue state funding for the bridge because she wanted swift action on infrastructure projects. “The window is now while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist,” she said.

McCain has used the Alaska bridge as a case study in what’s wrong with the way Congress spends money. After the Ketchikan bridge became an issue and an object of ridicule, Congress dropped the earmark.

Andrew Halcro ran against Palin in the 2006 governor’s race, receiving the third most voters, and remains a critic. In his blog and Web site, Halcro raised the bridge issue, saying Palin changed her position for political purposes.

Political flip-flops are a mainstay of presidential politics. One of the most famous examples is John Kerry’s explanation for opposing and then favoring an $87 billion Iraq funding bill during the 2004 presidential campaign. “I actually did vote for the $87 billion,” he said, “before I voted against it.”

According to the Ketchikan Daily News, the bridge issue came up on Sept. 20, 2006, during an appearance the gubernatorial candidates made in Ketchikan.

“The money that’s been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done,” the newspaper quoted Palin as saying. “This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.”

The newspaper also reported that she said “I think we’re going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project.”

The bridge issue dates back several years. Former Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski, who had been an Alaska senator, wanted it built. Stevens and Rep. Don Young, pushed the project through Congress, securing $452 million in a federal transportation bill for two bridges — the one in Ketchikan and another in Anchorage.

With criticism over earmarks increasing, Congress stripped the provision from the bill, requiring instead that some of the money be used for an airport. Alaska eventually received about half the money. Murkowski and the Legislature redirected all of the money but $60 million in 2006, and Palin has left the remainder untouched to eventually be used to improve access to the island, Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Sunday.

Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, who campaigned for Palin’s Democratic opponent, said he was there at the candidate forum when “she was asked about the bridge and she supported it.”

Bill McAllister, Palin’s press secretary, questioned how she could have used the scuttled bridge project to promote herself in national politics when she got there a week ago as McCain’s unexpected choice for the ticket. “How could she have foreseen that she would be at this point now? Everybody is surprised by this development,” McAllister said.

McAllister, who covered the 2006 campaign as a TV reporter, said Palin was lukewarm about the bridge as a candidate and cooled on it as governor.

“Of course when you become governor things come into much sharper focus than when you are a candidate,” he said. “Then she is forced to pay very close attention to the fiscal realities of it.”

From Andrew Sullivan’s blog:

“Ross is waiting:

‘…if it turns out that the next two months transform Palin into a national laughingstock with no future outside Alaska, I won’t be terribly happy with John McCain’s decision-making process. I intend to wait slightly longer than 48 hours, though, before I pass judgment on that question.’

It seems to me this is excessively generous to McCain. The bottom line is that he obviously hadn’t vetted this person in any halfway competent fashion. McCain’s first major presidential decision was rash, impulsive, ill-researched and foisted on the world with no warning. With this decision, McCain clearly wanted to indicate that he was breaking with Bush. But the manner in which he made it proves he truly is Bush’s third term – just more reckless.”

Governor Palin is a member of a very conservative evangelical or holiness church. Its members consider pregnancy outside marriage to be sinful. It is also a poor reflection of the parents that their child could get pregnant. Abstinence education is “supposed” to work for these people. In looking over the pictures of the daughter Bristol at McCain’s announcement of Palin as his running mate, her pregnancy probably would have shown had she not held a large blanket and the baby Trig in front of her. She was the official handmaiden, which I found rather strange. It seemed at the time that the baby should have been kept at home, in Ohio but away from the cameras because it is hard on an infant to be in that kind of environment. Bristol held the baby warmly, which I also found intriguing for the typical teenager. It made her apear older than her years.

Palin’s relationship with Alaska’s senior senator may be one of the more complicated aspects of her new position as Sen. John McCain’s running mate; Stevens was indicted in July 2008 on seven counts of corruption.

On another note, Last night, and you can watch the vid if you visit their site, Barack and Joe were interviewed on CBS 60min. At the end CBS said they offered same to McCain and Palin. This interview took place the Sunday after the Convention, so McCain and Palin should be on this coming Sunday, especially with their convention short lived and with another, and one after that, hurricane possibly hitting by the end of the week, you’d think they’d want a National Broadcast free.

So we should be starting to Suggest, strongly, that they do appear and lets see how they work together and have Palin answer some National Questions.

I’ve already sent my request to the McCain camp, how about you all!!!

Jim S,

I expected to see Palin on at least ONE of the Sunday morning shows yesterday. McCain was on FOX with Chris Wallace. You’d have thought she would have been there with him. With only 60-some days till the election, they’d want her front and center and QUICK if she was chosen based on qualifications. No one would have turned down the opportunity to get this hot-newbie on the air.

This whole Palin thing smells.

I’m waiting with baited breath for the first good hardhitting interviews that Palin will have to do on her own. She should be trying to stand on her own at this point. Any other veep nom would already have been on a major show for it.

Does this mean that Palin (or a benefactor) will be paying the shot personally? Or does it mean that the State of Alaska will be paying the bills for Palin to defend herself and her staff against the results of an investigation which is also paid for by the State of Alaska?

Sooo… we now are fairly certain that Bristol is preggers, but not married (just like mommy dearest was with her some 17 years ago), that Palin is good buddies with the indicted Ted Stevens and was a director of his barely-legal 527, that she was for the Ketchikan bridge before she was against it (what happened to those millions in funding? Did she receive it without returning it once the bridge project imploded??), that she believes she knows national security policy because Russia could invade Alaska… good lordie. There’s so much wrong with this woman as the choice for VP. I’m with BobbieG on why McCain picked this lightweight. It must be to get Romney onto the ticket thru the backdoor while the GOP power brokers who oppose him are busy hiding and ducking.

Sooo… what’s next? Well, here’s the newest thing floating around:

I’ve seen pictures of Palin, semi-nude, being passed around. The face looks kinda-sorta like her and was obviously from an earlier day. Guess the real question is “are the pix real?” Perhaps you all can ask around. …

I would love to hear other local tales rather than more rumor mongering by a few disgruntled teenagers who are obviously no fan of Bristol’s

For instance..how the heck did Mayor Palin get the city of Wasilla $20 mill in dept? That seems like a large amount…what was it for? Is the city managing without her? That would be good info to hear. Let’s listen to Obama and leave the girl alone. It’s not her fault her Mom dragged her into this.

I don’t know if you have ever had to deal with a pathological liar. If you catch them in a fib, they just make up a bigger lie to cover themselves. If you catch them in THAT, they construct a double-bonded, neo-Rocco, gold plated whopper to mask the lie. And so it goes…

No disrespect to your Governor. But, damn, this election is too important for John McCain and Sarah Palin to treat the American people with the contempt, that they have displayed over the past three days.

Three days on the ticket — and she has lawyered up.

Obama was right. This election is too big, it is too important, to be decided by “little” things.

Does anybody know what happened to your Alaska Attorney General, and his role in the state trooper fiasco?

Wouldn’t he be the appropriated person to protect the legal interests of the State of Alaska?

Unless the legal interests of the state are not in jeopardy, but the legal interests of your Governor — are.

From Huffington Post:

News continues to break regarding vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin that could, in the long term, pose serious problems to one of the main thrusts of the McCain campaign: the message of conservative reform.

The presentation of Palin as an anti-earmark, fiscally conscious pol is challenged by a review of recent political records. As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, she hired the firm of Hoffman Silver Gilman & Blasco to help secure spending projects for her town. The expenditure apparently paid off. From 2000 through 2002, Wasilla received more than $5.5 million in federal cash for transportation and social service projects.

According to the group Citizens Against Government Waste, the city received $1 million for a bus facility in 2000. In 2001, the Wasilla Health Center was granted a half million dollars for a community mental health center. That same year the city’s emergency shelter also was granted $500,000 for a transitional living program for homeless youth. A year later, the Wasilla regional dispatch center received $1 million in pork, the city was granted $1.5 million for water and sewer improvements, and received an additional $600,000 for a bus facility.

The use of the earmark system that — as a vice presidential candidate — Palin now criticizes continued into her tenure as governor. As the Los Angeles Times reported, the state of Alaska requested 31 earmarks worth $197.8 million for next year’s federal budget. And according to Citizens Against Government Waste, Alaska received $379,669,715 in pork during fiscal year 2008, nearly $100 million more than any other state.

Sara Palin and John McCain are both firmly against a woman’s right to choose whether to carry a pregnancy to term, or to terminate the pregnancy with an abortion– even in cases of incest and rape. Both are against sex education, birth control, and access to family planning.

I suppose it’s so we can find enough people for ‘100 years or more of war’ (to quote McCain, who said famously that he’d fine if we are at war in Iraq for a 100 years or more.

I am reposting my post here from yesterday on another Mudflats thread with some new comments because people here are asking WHY did McCain do such a dumb thing? This woman DEFINITELY WAS NOT vetted properly no matter how much spin the Repubs spin it on the MSM with their talking points on DAY 4. This guy MONGOBOO on HuffPo totally nailed it.

You are watching a man disintegrate in his greatest moment in life due to lifelong untreated PTSD because all of the people around him are enablers including the RNC and and the MSM and maybe the voters who support him.

It is a simple as that.

I predict he is going to collapse at some point. I only hope it is BEFORE this insane ticket just might be elected to the Presidency and Vice-Presidency of the United States by the Rovian wedge issue herd out there. (God help us!) I don’t think the RNC has either the intelligence or the guts to do do an intervention and pull both of them out of the fire by pulling both of them off the ticket.

But in two or three weeks watch for health issues to appear. The man is having a breakdown due to life long unsuccessfully treated PTSD. Politics was his treatment of choice and it ain’t gonna work no more. The jig is up. Sarah was the last Red Pill and Blue Pill combined. Having her as the drug is just not going to work. Once he starts to see HER as the NVA in the psyche it will not be pretty. Right now it is all deep in his psyche. I wonder what his blood pressure is? Look for hospitalization within the next three weeks unless Palin is pulled out of it immediately and someone with bonifides takes over ASAP. If she gets up to that podium to give a speech, it is curtains. If she debates Biden in front of millions and lays an egg, it’s curtains. I don’t see where anyone with any sense will let it go that far. But if it does goes on full tilt it is going to be a personal catastrophe for McCain.

What was McCain thinking?

Read below.

Here was my post:

“Like many here I also am very glad I found this astounding blog on Saturday after I heard the incomprehensible McCain VP choice announcement on Friday and started searching for information. I was completely dumbfounded when I heard the news.

A poster named “MONGOBOO” posted this outstanding post on HuffingtonPost tonight. I think this is the best analysis of what is really going on that anyone has yet written. I am sending it to every person I can and crosslinking it everywhere I can. Please do the same.

MONGOOBO wrote:

“Actually Palin is a predictable choice based on John McCain’s residual PTSD behaviors. Which makes him totally unfit to serve as President. Here are the behaviors that I see that are consistent with long untreated PTSD.

From Wikipedia/PTSD search:

1) Inappropriate rage (well documented).

2) Memory Loss. Many video examples. (Do you remember his Iraq trip and corrections by Lieberman?)

3) Social impairment. Unable to communicate and read communication of others. Verified by his strange sense of humor an oblique statements like “Soulmate” for Palin.

4) Emotional isolation and poor social judgment- presented as a positive “Maverick” image by the “old” media making us all defacto co-dependents.

5) Addictive behaviors.- In McCain’s case, sexual addiction. Validated by his broken sexual boundaries after his return from captivity. His destructive behaviors and denial with his wrecking of his first marriage. And extensive reliance on sexualized women as rescuers. i.e. Cindy and now Ms. Palin.

6) Risk taking behaviors- Palin’s choice is very risky on many levels and we are expected to approve of his risk taking and accept it as normal by the media again making us co-dependents. In essence a political shock doctrine depriving the electorate of “rational footings” to judge from. Thank you Naomi!

This is a sad day for the media. It has sold out America.

McCain is an obviously unstable personality that exhibits many of the traits of impairment from PTSD.”

This is what I wrote as a followup comment:

“Excellent post mongoboo!

You have done us all here on HuffPo a very gracious favor by doing this analysis. I am going to send the permalink of your post to everyone I know. This man is impaired. Neither the top leadership of the now completely dysfunctional Republican Party nor the MSM will intervene. They made us all enablers of the psychopath GWB once already. I will NOT go through this again. I refuse it. We must ALL now as a nation of sane and rational human beings do a national intervention at the ballot box on November 4th, 2008 to COMPLETELY END THIS NOW for the future of our children and grandchildren. Every voter is now a psychiatrist. We must do a national intervention as citizens.”

CNN has a panel tiptoeing around this story right now. A McCain spokesman (that Tucker Bounds idiot) is squirming away trying to put over the same old talking points.

They are all giving the storm the focus right now because of the levee breaks. They will definitely focus on all of this mess when it is appropriate. If they do it now, it will all spin back on Obama no matter how it is phrased. Don’t attack the story until the storm loses focus and McCain gets into his convention. When Olberman is side-stepping the issue, it’s quite clear they are doing it for a deliberate reason.

1 09 2008

Apparently, the McCain campaign isn’t telling the turth about the vetting process, either. This from Atlantic Monthly:

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation did not participate in the vetting of Gov. Sarah Palin and did not conduct a background check as part of the process, an FBI spokesman said today.

The Washington Post reported Sunday, citing an interview with campaign manager Rick Davis, that the vetting process ‘included reviews of financial and other personal data, an FBI background check and considerable discussion among the handful of McCain advisers nvolved in the deliberations.

‘In general, we do not do vetting for political campaigns except as it might regard investigations needed for security clearances,’ said John Miller, the chief FBI spokesperson.

The FBI did not participate in a vet, nor did it run a background check of Gov. Palin as part of the process.

Palin might already have a clearance that relates to her duties as governor. But the FBI can’t speak to that, and in any event, those investigations wouldn’t be accessible to the McCain campaign anyway.”

This is from ABC via the Daily Kos. (So has Palin missed a single rock falling down the cliff?):

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which since the 1970s has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain’s motto — as seen in a new TV ad — is “Country First,” the AIP’s motto is the exact opposite — “Alaska First — Alaska Always.”

Bart – whoever she is, she’s provided very good info for the rest of us. Too bad for you.

1 09 2008

Poor Bristol. Even if she is pregnant, she does not deserve to be thrown to the wolves by her own mother in order to disprove a rumor. If Sarah Palin had any sense (or any good advice from the McCain campaign staff), she would have kept the focus on her and released Trig’s birth certificate or her own medical records, which is done for presidential candidates anyway. It just proves that she is not ready for the big leagues.

This whole thing is a public relations fiasco. McCain not only failed to vet Palin to see if she was a suitable candidate, but also to prepare his campaign against the inevitable scrutiny she and her whole family would be put under. Who is running the McCain campaign? They have completely lost control of the message and are going to be playing catch-up with the mainstream media and the blogosphere from now until November.

If anything, today’s announcement of Bristol’s pregnancy is driving a whole new crop of folks (who weren’t surfing the political blogs all weekend) to seek out information about the Trig-is-Sarah’s-grandson rumor. So until we see some hard proof — not cryptic photo captions on MySpace — this rumor is not going away.

1 09 2008
LTBL

1 – sarah palin is trigs mother
2 – Bristol (sarah’s daughter) is engaged to Levi Fox (20 year old former Wasilla high wrestler)
3 – Sadie Fox “had” myspace pictures up of her new baby brother (aka her new baby brother-in-law Levi)
4 – Sadie Fox refered to Sarah Palin as “mommy in law” (aka her brother Levi’s soon to be mother-in-law)

Alrighty so that’s the 4 simple facts on the MySpace pics.

Obviously the McCain camp didn’t know (the Palins don’t seem to announce pregnancies before the 7th month) because surely letting the internet community find one smoking gun is going to make them stop searching. Because where there is smoke just means the fire has been put out. 😉

That is some BS you are putting down there Bart. I have assumed all along that she is a friend of the family, or she is someone who has a kid who is a friend of Bristols, or one of the other Palin children.

There has been no sign that any “obama operatives” have been involved in this, and I think that the Mccain campaign making that claims show that not only is John McCain too much of a doddering fool to be trusted with any kind of important decision, but he’s not man enough to then take responsibility for his foolishness.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain’s motto — as seen in a new TV ad — is “Country First,” the AIP’s motto is the exact opposite — “Alaska First — Alaska Always.”

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

“We are a state’s rights party,” says Clark, a self-employed goldminer. The AIP has “a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law.”

Earlier this year, Palin sent a video message to the AIP for its annual convention, where AIP vice chair George Clark told the small crowd that Palin “was an AIP member before she got the job as a mayor of a small town –- that was a non-partisan job. But you get along to go along -– she eventually joined the Republican Party, where she had all kinds of problems with their ethics, and well, I won’t go into that. She also had about an 80 percent approval rating, and is pretty well sympathetic to her former membership.”

Obama to Media, Politicos on Palin Pregnancy Story: ‘Back Off!’

At a brief press availability in Monroe, Mich., ABC News asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., if he had any response to Gov. Sarah Palin’s statement that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant.

“Let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits,” Obama said, “and people’s children are especially off limits.

“This shouldn’t be part of our politics,” he continued, “It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.

Well, I have to disagree with Obama on this one.

Once politicians start touting their “family values” as qualifications for high office, and drag their kids on to the stage at political rallies, to be gawked at by tens of millions, then the kids are part of the political process. How they are used or misused by the politicians, how theit behavior reflects on their parents, is fair game for the media and everyone else.

If you don’t want your family dragged into the nasty business of presidential politics, please leave them all at home. And don’t tout your “good parenting” to the nation unless you want to have it questioned in public.

John McCain introduced Palin as a “loving wife and proud mother of five” and Palin introduced each and every member of her nuclear family, including the pregnant Bristol, to the world. It is WAY too late now to say they are off limits.

I do think first spouses are different from the kids. The spouses chose to get married. The kids had no choice to get born to them.

There must have been a time in American politics when the families stayed home and only appeared for ceremonial moments. But since the Kennedy Administration, the kids have been right there with everything else.

I think the Clintons balanced things well. Chelsea wasn’t exactly hidden but she wasn’t paraded around for every photo op either. And she seems to turned out just fine, despite people like John McCain.

A good summary from THE NATION:

McCain’s Palin Problem

Ari Berman

Republicans endured a category 3 storm today. No, not Hurricane Gustav. The vetting–or rather, lack thereof–of Sarah Palin.

Oh Sarah, we hardly knew ye. Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo has a great roundup of what we’ve learned about Palin today alone.

* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.

* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.

* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain’s Veep candidate.

* The news broke that Palin’s 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain’s candidacy.

* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin’s own spokesperson hadn’t known about it only two days ago.

* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy “last week” — without saying what day last week he knew about it.

* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin — now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she’d been picked.

* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska — a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.

Not a good start to Day One of the Republican Convention. If it wasn’t for Gustav, Palin’s problems would be an even bigger story. Can she even survive as McCain’s vice presidential hopeful? See Eagleton, Thomas. She may energize the Republican base (so much for McCain’s supposed independence from the wingnuts in his party) but flop with everybody else.

Apparently the people in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, population 8471, even thought of recalling her as mayor after she fired the city police chief and library director (!) for not endorsing her mayoral campaign.

In the six months McCain had to make a vice presidential pick, couldn’t he of sent a few more lawyers to Alaska? They seem to be vetting their candidate ex post facto. McCain wanted to select Joe Lieberman but was told such a move would destroy the Republican Party. So he went in the other direction, picking a completely unknown hardcore conservative with virtually no relevant political qualifications. And we wonder why controversy ensued.

This woman may very well bring in some voters of questionable intelligence BUT it will also drive away any sane/intelligent people who were seriously considering voting for McCain. The Republican party is ending up just another fundamentalist evangelical church, and their VP nominee is just a vacuous representative of the “Flat Earth Society”. They have devolved into Banana Republicans.

Thanks for the clarity and good info on this blog.

You know, it really comes down to this. The baby is someone’s, but I would venture to say not Gov. Palin’s. That one photo might be shopped, but in earlier photos she didn’t look pregnant one day, the next she did. And then the 22-hour flight saga. Bizarre! The truth will out at some point, but sooner rather than later I would say would be better for all concerned.

You know, for me, it boils down to the truth. After these past eight years, I would just like our elected officials to tell the truth. Especially those who live in moral glass houses. So, your teenager gets pregnant. Don’t cover it up, tell the truth. If something strange happens in your family, tell the truth. If it doesn’t go with your supposedly perfect life, then, well, guess what, maybe you’ve learned what we all learn, and that is that no one is perfect, things go wrong, and you deal with it rather than going to unbelievable lengths to cover it up. That never works…I grew up in a small town where things like this happened with some regularity. Everyone always knew what the real story was.

What I don’t want to happen is for folks to move on as if the present announcement about Bristol’s ‘five-month’ pregnancy solves the issue. The Palins have brought their family to the world stage and have made it part of their platform, if you will. We need to see what the real state of their family truly is. For pete’s sake, does anyone have any integrity anymore?

Unfortunately this is all about drilling in Alaska of the variety that was going on in the Palin home. Thanks to pressure from the Limbaugh types, McCain has made a fatal decision. File this under “You Really Can’t Make this Shit Up”

Apparently, Sarah Palin’s claim (as noted on her Wikipedia page and repeated across blogs everywhere) that she won the Miss Congenialty award in that beauty pagent is NOT TRUE! The woman who (apparently) won it disputes Sarah here:

“Amy Gwin, 43, of University City, grew up in Alaska and competed in the Miss Wasilla, Alaska, competition in 1984 against GOP vice presidential choice Sarah Palin. Gwin said Friday that she won the Miss Congeniality award in the competition, although Palin’s Wikipedia entry says she won the contest — and the Miss Congeniality award.”

Memo to self. If ever picking someone for the VP spot, make sure they’ve already been vetted by the media.

The real killer for Sarah: All of these discoveries are defining her and she has YET to sit down for a real interview to start creating her own image. McCain has to either (1) take off the training wheels and let her start giving interviews or (2) claim a do-over. We have 2 months to the election, so they simply can’t afford to wait a week to roll her out to the public.

I can’t believe all the conflicting rumors on this site! Maybe McCain should have picked John Edwards as his VP instead! No, wait, Edwards, his friend Young, and his girlfriend Ms. Hunter probably had the approved Planned Parenthood birth control education, plus they are all a lot older than 17, and probably all pro-choice, and they still got “punished” with a baby! And Ms. Hunter can’t even marry the father(s) because they’re both married, right? But Edwards was the Democrat pick for VP 4 years ago, and might have made it again this year if the National Enquirer hadn’t outed him.

Why is there such a double standard, and why should a 17-year-old Republican, who is not running for office, be held to a higher standard than three old Democrats?

At this point, the only question I have left about the baby situation is; why would a woman, in order to dispel rumors about who gave birth to her child, not release her own medical records, which would be perfectly normal for a vp candidate to do anyway? Why would she choose to throw her daughter to the wolves by saying, “she couldn’t be the unmarried mother of one baby, because she’s about to be the unmarried mother of a different baby?” You know what, the whole thing stinks.

But at this point, I’m just sickened by children being under the microscope over this. Sarah Palin, if you have any decency lady – withdraw. Today. You put your children in this position. Nobody else lady. You did.

As for Bristol chosing to have her baby, it’s likely that was the only choice that didn’t include her being disowned. ProLifer’s can be like that if they don’t accept any other ideals. And Sarah Palin doesn’t sound like she’d accept anything else.
