Witch Hunter that Prayed Palin into Office is Coming Back to Wasilla!

19 09 2008

Pastor Thomas Muthee

Yes, you read that right. It really has gotten that absurd. I just had coffee with fellow blogger and Anchorage talk radio phenom Shannyn Moore. While we were fuming over the McCain hijacking of the Troopergate investigation, she got a call from MSNBC. They asked if she’d come on Keith Olbermann’s show tonight to talk about ‘the witch hunter’. The witch hunter, aka Pastor Muthee, was the guest pastor from Kenya that appeared at Palin’s church, The Wasilla Assembly of God, and “prayed over” Sarah to help her become governor.

Muthee began his life in ministry in Africa by hunting down a local woman named Mama Jane after proclaiming her a witch.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, six months of fervent prayer and research identified the source of the witchcraft as a local woman called Mama Jane, who ran a “divination” centre called the Emmanuel Clinic.

Her alleged involvement in fortune-telling and the fact that she lived near the site of a number of fatal car accidents led Pastor Muthee to publicly declare her a witch responsible for the town’s ills, and order her to offer up her soul for salvation or leave Kiambu.

After Pastor Muthee declared Mama Jane a witch, the townspeople became suspicious and began to turn on her, demanding that she be stoned. Public outrage eventually led the police to raid her home, where they fired gunshots, killing a pet python which they believed to be a demon.

After the witch hunting incident, Muthee founded the World Faith Church, also known as the “Prayer Cave.” The Prayer cave has birthed more than 400 churches across Africa – in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan and Rwanda.

While Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Muthee came to speak at her church. Here’s what Sarah Palin has to say about the experience, captured on video taken in the church. Keep in mind, this quote didn’t come from her long ago past. This happened IN JUNE, 2008…three months ago.

“As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold. And he was praying “Lord make a way, Lord make a way.”

“And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it. He said “Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.”

“So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church.”

Muthee has spoken at the Wasilla Assembly of God church no less than 10 times, including the time he prayed over then Mayor Sarah Palin, giving her the divine shortcut to governorship. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t blink. Now, he’s coming back. He is scheduled for multiple speaking engagements in Wasilla this week.

The official vision statement of Muthee’s church (taken directly from the website) is…are you ready?…

Touching lives for total community transformation, thereby taking cities and nations.

Taking cities and nations? Most of us would like our cities and nation to stay just where they are, thankyouverymuch.

When Shannyn was talking in a serious, businesslike way about coordinating with a major media outlet to discuss the ‘witch hunter’, it struck me how absurd this is. We both started to laugh so hard, we couldn’t stop. Our governor believes in the power of a guy who believes that demons live in pythons, and witches cause traffic accidents. She believes that a Kenyan witch-hunter prayed her into office. Ladies and Gentlemen, behold the Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States of America, and tell me what that says about the Presidential candidate who nominated her.

When you decide whether to laugh or cry, let me know.

Meanwhile, grab a beer, or some popcorn, and tune in to Keith Olbermann’s show tonight, hear the conversation with Shannyn, and marvel at the frightening absurdity that we’ve come to know as Sarah Palin.

Unfortunately, there are many people who will believe such hocus pocus…all too many of them are republicans!!!
I am sorry to see the forum start up because I did enjoy all the comments and now, it looks as though all the responses must be on the forum.

There have been 25 comments in just the last 15 or 20 minutes, so I wouldn’t worry just yet. The forum is designed for other types of conversations. I think we’ll still get plenty of response here. AKM

This needs to get out to all the media – tv and papers! Someone posted a link to all of the television stations – now out there in the kazillion comments – could you please post it again.

Also, I need the name of one person who donated to mc cain/ palin only to find out that they are full of lies so I can sue palin on Judge Judy for fraud and shucksterism ( I can’t think of the legal term for that but I know there is one.)

My use of lower case for their names is intentional not laziness – I cannot bring myself to honor them with any type of formality.

Got this in at the end of the previous post, so I’ll re-post here:

It’s been stated several times in this blog that witnesses who ignore subpoenas can’t be disciplined unless a vote is taken by the whole legislature, and they aren’t scheduled to meet until sometime after November.

Surely there are provisions for requiring an emergency session of the legislature! I mean, can you seriously imagine the following scenario: “We just had a 12.0 earthquake and Anchorage has been flattened! The full legislature has to vote on how to rebuild. Oh, wait, they won’t be meeting until January. No problem…”

I don’t believe there is the political will in Alaska for an emergency session. However, it’s looking like the investigation will continue with what information they have. More on this later. AKM

I am a scientist, with over 35 years experience, so please be assured that I am rational when I say this. People’s religous views and practices really do no t bear on their qualifications for a job, unless it leads them to be dangerous. There is no profit in this approach. It smells a bit of bigotry, and it will diminish this blog to go down this road.

Her incompetence and meglomania in her public life should by all means be discussed, but this topic is a distraction.

Engine Nighthawk (that’s my name too!) – I appreciate what you are saying. I thought about this, and did not post on the witch hunter when it first came to my attention. I do so now because, a: it is being picked up by the MSM and is going to become part of the national conversation. b: because I do believe, as you say, that it may lead her “to be dangerous”. These views are so far out of the mainstream, and smack of “divine will” and “sense of mission”, not to mention her non-opposition to teaching creationism in public schools, her belief in new earth theology….I could go on and on. This isn’t just an issue of her personal faith, this is an alarm bell for how her personal faith informs her world view, her mindset and her decision making ability. Just my 2 cents. AKM

This is great timing. Someone call Sarah, quick! Have her tell Pastor Muthee to pray away the financial crisis! That way, McCain won’t have to remember what SEC stands for, and Sarah will have a solid accomplishment under her belt for her next grilling from Sean ‘Hardball’ Hannity.
While he is at it, maybe Muthee could also pray away the subpoenas.

@Engine. I have always felt that way about religion. However…do the republicans feel the same way? What happened to Obama re: Rev. Wright? Sarah has been shaped by her fundamentalist views. There is no doubt in my mind that those views will go into the white house with her. She is against abortion in ANY instance. John McCain wants Roe Vs Wade overturned.

I do believe that the public has a right to know when a republican nominee believes in a minister who chases demons out of snakes and little old ladies. I do believe we have the right to be worried when she believes that war in Iraq is a task from God. Personally, I never could understand that. So..God thinks its ok to have almost a million Iraquis die?

Anyhow…I for one am just venting because I am so sick of the hypocrisy of the Repubs.

Alaska Natives dis Palin

This was on Alaska Newsreader today at http://www.adn.com

UPDATED: How Native is Todd Palin? What a touchy question, right? Alaska Real, written by “a 20-something Tlingit/Athabascan woman” known as Writing Raven, tackles this one head-on today. Her personal blog post refers to Todd Palin and his heritage, but over at Salon.com, where it is an editor’s pick in the Open Salon, it’s called “Todd Palin’s bloodlines.”

After background on variations of what ¼, 1/16 or 1/8 Native blood can mean, the writer gets to her point.

To be very clear – I absolutely do not believe that blood quantum defines how “Native” you are. The frequent mention of it as a disqualifying factor is wrong. For that matter, there are countless ways to be a proud member of the Native community, and none of it has to do with that extra 1/16 more Native blood you have than the next guy over. What defines you as a Native leader, and a ‘Native example’ is much easier to nail down, and in this case, Todd would not be the definition of either.

He has also never been part of the Southcentral Alaska Native culture, nor have his children, despite being raised here. To me, this says he is either disinterested, or because he is limited in a few of the organizations (namely tribal) he is rejecting the whole. In any case, both the Palins have a dismal record on Native issues, so please, do not look to Todd’s heritage to help with them. That he hasn’t done anything because of it so far is a good indicator that he won’t be encouraging his wife on anything in the future.
Alaska Real’s original post includes half a dozen links to news sources examining the Palin record with Alaska Natives in her home state. She also provides a link to the widely circulated Internet document called, “Sarah Palin’s Record on Alaska Native and Tribal Issues,” created by Lloyd Miller, an Anchorage Native rights attorney. She says she plans to clarify this discussion and her view further on her blog.

On the Alaska Native political front, the Bristol Bay Times reports that “Heartbeat Alaska” creator Jeanie Greene says she will use her show and Web site to collect commentary from Alaska Natives on Palin’s record. Greene says she plans to invite Palin onto her show the second Sunday in October; if the VP candidate refuses the invite, Greene will host a panel of Native experts discussing her record on these issues.

ignorance is not bliss

I re-read Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale last year when it was a book of the year at the University of Alaska Anchorage. It was paired with The Swallows of Kabul and intended to encourage the campus to explore religious fundamentalism in its various forms. I have actually been thinking about that novel as well and Atwood’s artistic exploration of the backlash against feminism.

Last week I was reading some Charlotte Perkins Gilman from the 19th century–her essay on sex distinctions. She was one of the first feminists to articulate the difference between biological sex differences and the social construction of gender. It helped me understand why I cannot identify with Palin, even though I demographically have a lot in common with her. Her image of a woman is inverted. In the public sphere where her womanness should not matter, she parades it and makes a big deal about how motherhood makes her a multi-tasker. In that realm, I simply want to think about competence, whether male or female. I don’t see how biology matters there.

In the domestic sphere, where a woman gives birth and lactates, I consider the sex differences genuinely significant. We don’t ask about men going to work three days after an infant is born because they don’t give birth and their wombs don’t go on bleeding. We don’t ask men about breastfeeding and nurturing a new born and establishing the kind of attachment that comes from that close physiological bond–because they are not equipped to do so.

Because Atwood implicated some feminists in the backlash against women, I think we should all remain self-critical about our tendency to criticize other women. I am still asking myself how we honor our biology without letting it determine all our choices. There are a number of ways to do that, and I respect the tough choices women make every day and wish we had more supportive policies that would make those choices a little easier. But I have finally realized for myself that Palin flaunts femininity in ways that don’t matter to me and downplays it in ways that do matter to me.

In the end, I am more concerned about health care, military imperialism, and unregulated markets–and in that arena I just want a competent leader willing to learn what s/he doesn’t already know. On that level the fact that she’s a woman just doesn’t matter.

To ridicule does smack of bigotry. To each his own. I guess I am just super concerned because it’s not really a private matter for her. She thinks god wants us to win in Iraq, and a minister’s prayers helped her win an election, and her religion tells her that rape victims, if pregnant, must carry the baby to term. For her to hold a high public office would mean that her views would directly affect others who do not necessarily hold them. She has demonstrated that she holds no clear distinction between her religion and her politics. I think we should express concern, and avoid ridicule, otherwise we are also intolerant of diversity.

By the way, does anyone know if it’s true that Reagan consulted astrologers?
I bear no ill will to people who visit astrologers and palm readers, unless they

I didnt like what Wright had to say….and I take Obama at his word that he didnt like it either. He distanced himself publicly…and I know it hurt him because this was a man that on many levels he truly liked.

To date…Palin has lied…or has ignored every situation that has come up. She has not addressed one subject without a lie attached to it.

PRIOR POST:
Engine Nighthawk Palin (15:58:32) :

@MinNj

You are welcome to your views. I understand your concerns. I still protest this entry.

RESPONSE: I pretty much agree with you. Frankly, it’s pretty fantastic to believe that a man was born of a virgin, preached wisdom at age 13, died and rose from the dead in three days and still lives today. Before he died he drove demons out of people’s bodies, turned water to win, and fed thousands with a few fish. Catholics believe that communion bread is actually the body of Christ. They (well, some of them) believe in exocism of demons from the body. I’m not making fun of Christians and Catholics. The nature of religion is that it exceeds physical reality. These things may have happened. If there is a God, and anti-God, it’s certanly possible. I’m not trying to argue they didn’t happen. But they aren’t much different from believing a person is causing car accidents (maybe she had a demon, or Satan in her.)

The point where I disagree with you is, if Obama is denigrated for listening to a pastor preach hate against America – for reasons which are understandable even if misguided, SWNWNBM can be criticized for preaching to the youth of the church, on church property, that the war is Iraq is God’s will and having a world view that her ascendancy is divinely inspired. The latter, in conjunction with the former, is sort of scary.

We’re all going to look back on this and wonder why we spent so much time palinpatating/fussing/worrying/ignoring our responsibilities(walking the dog, putting out the trash, washing the dishes, flossing, checking the latest absurdities on the internet, listening to the talking heads).Clearly, the general public (whom, I have realized, are too busy to keep track of all the machinations of the campaigns) and the MSM are gradually realizing how ridiculous and insulting to our intelligence the McCain campaign is.At the rate things are going……it’s going to be an Obama landslide.I don’t think I’d ever feel this way if I hadn’t found “home base” at Mudfllats. All I can say about Sarah Palin’s belief that a witch-doctor praying over her is why she is governor is this:

It reminds me of the movie “Stand By Me,” when the junk-yard owner taunts Ted because his father had mental problems after the war, by saying “Loony, loony, loony.”

That’s what Palin is–LOONY.

EngineNighthawk, I have to agree somewhat and say I read this article with great trepidation, a dreaded feeling, hoping that I would not be disappointed by some untoward prejudice. Then I looked at the video and oh boy!

I was raised Roman Catholic, then went into the real world and learned a lot of what was left out of Catholic History as taught by the nuns in grammar school. I am an agnostic now, maybe even an atheist but too afraid to admit it out loud. (Carlin notwithstanding in his views about that ‘invisible angry man in the sky who loves me!’) I believe that religion is a tool to keep control on the masses. I would be a little concerned and somewhat dismayed if the person at the trigger was a raving fanatic. But it takes all kinds, I guess.

It is a topic not as worthy, but I will be very interested in the follow-up as AKM suggests.

They don’t have to be elected to bring about their own personal end times. They’ve already got enough power to hold a picnic and pass the purple Kool-Aid around, or to go watch a sunset from the comfort of the church bus, with the engine idling and a hose stuck onto the exhaust pipe and into the back window, listening to gospel music on the eight-track tape player.

No, I think that’s all about ego and megalomania. They want company and the recognition which they’ll get from all of us who are being turned into crispy critters as they ascend slowly into heaven in golden chariots to sit on God’s right hand.

GOod job for getting tech savvy…

On the blog, AKM writes the articles and we have discussion around them…sometimes going off topic etc. The forum is more OUR place, where we can start discussions on whatever topics we choose; and this can be done in a more orderly manner. So it’s easy to search topics and find all the posts related to that topic in one place.

The forum is also a fantastic place to start a poll…or to organise events/rallies and communicate one on one directly with each other.

If you have an interesting issue you’d like to discuss with us, go on there and start a new thread and folks who are interested in said issue will join in.

The blog I think wil change for the better as I expect comments will be related to AKM’s posts and organising will be on the forum

[[[I can see it now. VP Palin will invite Pastor Muthee to the White House for the official Prayer Breakfast.]]]

If she’s really like Bush Jr, she’ll make him keynote speaker at a prayer luncheon, after he has agreed to pay for the event, will hand out his religious-cult propaganda to Christian preachers there, and will even give him a presidential award of some kind.

That’s what Bush Jr did in 2001 when he honored Rev. Moon by having him give the keynote address to 1400 other pastors and other religious leaders, the vast majority being Christian. As the Christian right had expended a lot of effort to get Bush Jr into office, you might not be surprised that they were a tad insulted about this, especially since they were not informed of it before their arrival at the luncheon. At each place setting was Moonie propaganda tracts, and after the luncheon there was MORE Moonie propaganda handed out. Bush Jr gave him a big-ass award, further pissing off the other ministers.

This article is from the Southern Baptist Convention.

(BEGIN QUOTE)

http://www.baptiststandard.com/2001/1_29/print/moon.html

SBC leaders saw a new Moon rising at luncheon

January 29, 2001

___WASHINGTON–Three Texas Baptists were among a group of Southern Baptist Convention leaders attending an Inaugural Prayer Luncheon for Unity and Renewal Jan. 19 that turned out to be sponsored by Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church.
___Baptist Press issued a story Jan. 23 explaining that the SBC leaders–including SBC President James Merritt, SBC Executive Committee President Morris Chapman and SBC Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission President Richard Land–did not know Moon was behind the interfaith event and were shocked when he rose to speak.
___Technically, the event was sponsored by the Washington Times Foundation. The Washington Times is a conservative-oriented newspaper favored by many conservative evangelical Christians. The paper was founded by and is owned by Moon.
___About 1,400 religious leaders attended the luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Capitol Hill the day after President George W. Bush’s inauguration.
___Texans among those attending were Paul Pressler and Ed Young of Houston and Jack Graham of Plano. They joined the likes of Jerry Falwell, Franklin Graham, Tony Evans and John Ashcroft.
___”I was shocked to see that Sun Myung Moon was on the program and in essence the host,” Chapman said. “I was even more surprised on the way out of the banquet hall to be given a propaganda book on the Unification Church.”
___”We knew that it was going to be an interdenominational event, but we had no idea that the luncheon was hosted by the Moonies,” said Merritt, who delivered a tribute to evangelist Billy Graham.
___”This was completely unanticipated,” Pressler added. “I was not pleasantly surprised by the focus of the luncheon.”
___Pressler praised Merritt, however, for using his time on the program to honor Graham and speak about the Christian gospel. “Dr. Merritt was superb,” he said.
___Chapman said the experience “will serve to remind evangelical Christians that the world increasingly is filled with wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
___Pressler and his wife, Nancy, who live near President Bush’s parents in Houston, received invitations to two inaugural balls as well as a private prayer service with the first family at St. John Church.

You know, the whole religion thing is a very American phenomenon. I would not be able to tell you what religion any of the politicians here are. In fact I would not be able to tell you if they practice any religion at all.

I agree with the person above who said there seems to be no way to draw a line between Palin’s religion and politics. That is why this is a legitimate topic.

“because I do believe, as you say, that it may lead her “to be dangerous”. AKM”

Thank you for this.

As a person who is one of those whom both Pastor Muthee and Sarah Palin would deem a “witch”, and therefore susceptible to the kind of “driving out” that I have no doubt would become part of public policy should Gov. Palin come into any sort of national power, I find her associations with this sort of activity extremely relevant.

The Pagan community in the United States has fought long and hard to attain a place of acceptance and inclusion among the mainstream religions, and has suffered a good deal over the last eight years under the Bush administration (when GWB declared my religion “not a religion”). These stories only appear to promise not only more of the same, but a threat of downright persecution, and the possibility of being driven underground yet again.

It’s a question of the Constitutional right to freedom of religion, and the willingness of an individual who, God forbid, would be asked to swear to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States”, while intending to only do so for part of it–the part she agrees with. For the rest of the protections afforded by the Constitution–the parts that she doesn’tagree with, and which don’t serve her agenda–she’s prepared to make a false oath.

I don’t care, personally, which church Sarah Palin attends, or what her particular religious beliefs happen to be. MY only concern is how she intends to impose upon MINE, and what she is prepared to DO to me and mine in the name of her god.

If this isn’t a serious aspect of her candidacy, and one worth examining and questioning and discussing, then I imagine that anyone pointing out that lack of seriousness is someone who is not under threat. But please–do not be dismissive of those of is who are.

Rev. Wright might have said things but they where deffinately taking out of content. This is what he meant.

The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

He was mad at america he was not being unpatriotic, just as a mother gets mad at her child and will say (under her breath) G-D damn Lisa don’t you know any better.
Rev. wright’s chicken comes home to roost was a quote from Ambassador Ed Peck.

Sarah Palin loves this church, she acts like a preacher herself up there. This is one scary loon. It’s just to bad this doesn’t get as much attention like Rev. wright.
If this women is elected into office I only have one thing to say, I won’t be BITTER, I’ll just say G-D DAMN AMERICA.

Sufferin’ Jesus, I forgot all about that Sambo quote!

So THAT’s why Pat Buchanan is becoming destabilized over Sarah Palin. It happened with Pat and Hillary Clinton…as soon as Hillary and Bill started pandering to bigots, Pat became Hillary’s bitch. Any criticism of her on a news show that he was on, and he would become so agitated, I thought he was going to destabilize.

Pat’s been pretty normal since Hillary withdrew from the primary…until now.

Check out this video of Chris Matthew nailing Buchanan for his hypocrisy. Watch Pat Buchanan become highly agitated:

The sad thing about this is that I’ve never known Buchanan to be a hypocrite. I don’t agree with any of his opinions, and he is a bona fide racist and antisemitist..but a hypocrite? No. He’s old-school Republican, and these guys are known for their own integrity and honor. You may not agree with their views, but they aren’t hypocritcal about them, and apply the same standards to all people, even their own kind.

Well, he’s certainly Sarah Palin’s bitch now. She can do anything she wants and it’s fabulous to Pat. She could take a dump on a stage, serve it up on crackers as caviar, and he would gobble it right down without question.

Wonderful website! I figure if you Alaskans can mobilize the rest of the Alaskans to vote for Obama and the polls show this in the next CNN “Electoral Collage Map” ( does Alaska even show up on that map?) the rest of the USA may begin to question their love affair with the fair Sarah. I have always thought Bill O Reilly at Fox news was a reasonably balanced reporter but his sympathetic support of of Sarah shows he either 1:does not believe her history as depicted on this site or 2:he does not think it important in determining characteristics of a VP. or 3:he just supports the republican party at all cost.
I have a friend in Texas who thinks Sarah is just what the USA needs & is the genuine article because Bill O Reilly vouches for her.

Anyone check the date of the gathering in the video and the per diem list? That would make this very relevant indeed.

For what it’s worth, belief in witchcraft is widespread in Africa (E. E. Evans-Pritchard’s 1937 Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande is the classic anthropological study). It’s not necessarily any nuttier than, say, believing in a supernatural entity whose divine will plays into significant events in our lives.

Deb — I hate to say it – but Palin is in good shape and doesn’t need the slimming of black as most of us do! She runs those hills, ya know (as she bragged in her interview when she was supposed to be 7 months preggers but not showing).

I guess I’d chock it up to her suddenly having to check out of Alaska at a moment’s notice and had to rely on basic black.

To add another point to this — from comments I’ve read elsewhere – there are plenty of men out there who support her for one reason – they think she is “hot”. Another reason we should all be scared.

19 09 2008

@rubby. I dont normally belittle anyones belief. If I dont like it…I stay away from it. Perhaps the issue here is the hypocrisy and the fact that if Palin believes in the rapture and that it is soon…there is no need to protect the environment..polar bears or wolves.

I dont think its what she believes really. I dont care, except when it might affect me, and my neighbours

19 09 2008

Rubby, belief in witchcraft is widespread in the US, too…and no, there’s nothing “nutty” about it.

Not as nutty, in fact, as going to people’s houses, killing their pets, accusing them of causing auto accidents and then driving them out of their homes, feeling justified all the while.

Point taken, ruddy!

I would have to say one comforting thing about this blog – a lot of people have come together representing varying beliefs – religious or not. I grew up in the church and as an adult have struggled with seeing right-wing fundamentalism creep into the mainstream and alter things. But this is finally a place where I see people’s faith structure not getting in the way of great discussion and honest dialog. And not getting in the way of supporting Obama. Here I feel a raising of the level of thinking. It is refreshing and very encouraging.

Shannyn was great and I think carried the message well without denegrating Palin. Both the questions and answers brought the story forward in a reasoned manner. Well done!!!

I understand why Engine is concerned about the entry concerning the pastor but I think this is completely relevant information just as I also believe that the Rev. Wright story was also relevant. When you run for public office the public has a right to know and come to their own conclusions as to how these matters might affect the decisions our leaders make on our behalf.

Until Sarah denounces Pastor Muthee, I have to believe that she fully embraces this theology.

UGH! I’ve seen that whole video of her at that church…

You know, after BUSH came into office, and by the time around 2005 hit, I had it.. People like Bush and other world leaders have disgusted me so bad in how THEY use God or Allah for their reasons for this or that – ALL for all the wrong reasons. They twist religion and God up so bad and cause others like me to realize I want NO association with what their meaning of God is. Nutzo’s have given God a bad name and I want no part of it.

However, if Obama / Biden win this election.. I just might start believing there is a God again. I might even have more faith in our Government too!

Until then, I think George Carlin says it about right when he says:
Religion is BS!

19 09 2008
Engine Nighthawk Palin

@MJC well, the church has always taught that to be able to receive communion, one must be in communion with the teachings of the church. And we all know the restricve teachings of the church re reproductive rights.

But, there is an escape clause.

If one has taken time to form a conscience, then one must obey that conscience even when in conflict with the commands of the church. So, if one could argue that Pelosi and Biden should be permitted to receive communion. This follows the Doctrine of Internal Forum. But since they publicly oppose the teachings of the church, the church can say, “sorry, you know the rules.”

In general, if one is in private oppositon then it is not an issue. But the church teaches that public lack of agreement can lead to scandal (original meaning of the word: to lead astray by example). Thus they withhold the sacrament or else they too would be scandalizing.

I understand why the church feels it must enforce the rules, but I have conflicted feelings about it myslef.

Sarah’s speech tells me she knew she was going to be picked for McCain’s v.p. three months ago and believe me, said knowledge didn’t come from a vision that came to her when she was on her knees praying in her closet. Isn’t that how Jesus told his followers to pray so they wouldn’t sound like empty, self-righteous, blowhards? I digress. It would account for her anti-climatic response to Charles Gibson when she said she didn’t blink when he asked her just before the RNC.

Talking about figureheads — it wasn’t that long ago that McCain was washed up, MSM were going to stop covering him. He had no money. He was down and out. Then BAM – and everyone else just bows out. For the most part the Repugs hated McCain. He really became purely a figurehead and they all threw their support behind him. I couldn’t believe it. But then, they did put up figurehead Bush 8 years ago. Now they select Palin and with about 20 seconds notice – they all had to start playing the support game. I’m still waiting for the footage of one of them throwing up after they had to give another McPalin support talk on camera.

They must all have microchips implanted with the talking points – like they have done to Palin. Just wait until the debates. I’m waiting for the moment when Palin’s message will start skipping or she will talk in slow mo as her battery runs down.

National Enquirer, Sept 29 Issue: Bristol and the Drug Video « Vote Palin Weblog

[…] And it still astounds me that given what was happening at home that Sarah Palin accepted the position of being John McCain’s running mate. She did not appear to be making a smart, deliberate choice. I realize that it must be extremely flattering to be asked to run, but it is also important to ask if it is a prudent decision for yourself and your family. My conclusion is that Sarah was in serious denial about her children’s behavior and she is blindly ambitious. Or, perhaps more frighteningly, she feels that she has been tapped for this job by God and is carrying out a religious mission. Unfortunately, given her extremely rigid and literal religious beliefs this is not a far-fetched a conclusion. And there is indeed evidence that she will act according to her religious beliefs. And that she believes that a prayer by a witch hunting priest (No, this is not a typo. I really meant to type witch hunting priest) got her elected governor. […]

@MJC

yes, well there is where we come against the separation of church and state. The church even has rulkes of how to declare a war to be “just” or “not just.” Which works ok on paper, but then we fins such gems as the treay it made with Hitler in 1933. There aremany other places to find inconsistency, which any thinking catholic has to find a way to make peace with in order to reamin in the church.

This power that the church has over the centuries exerted on its members is the source of much distrust, and it is for that reason JFK was suspect in many Americans’ minds. A discussion of how to reconcile one’s faith and tolerance in a cosmopolitan society such as the USA is beyond the scope of this blog. But public holders of foffice have the duty, the sworn duty, to uphold the constitution. One can only hope that those who aspire to office will also be faithful to that duty. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, I still maintain that hope.

I think it is possible to be a voice of dissent yet accepting the rule of law. When it becomes a critical issue of human rights, I also accept the validity of civil disobedience.

On a personal note, I do not define the church as the heirarchy. To me the church is the entirety of the beleiveers, and I see it as a broken body. As a student of history as well as an observer of my own times, I am fully aware of the potential for institutional evil as wella s institutiuonal good. I also know that the catholic church has a mixed record on that.

I remain cathoilc becasue it is my spiritual idiom; it is both cultural and intellectual. By the way, I heard Tony Blair on John Stuart last night declare that he recently converted to catholicism.

19 09 2008
pamela

The questions about Biden and Pelosi and their religion reminded me of Biden’s appearance on Meet the Press. Brokaw was pushing him to compare the Catholic Church’s position on abortion w/ his record. Biden basically said that he personally accepted church teachings – but he didn’t feel he had the right (through his votes in the senate) to impose those teachings on others, or the country on the whole – especially in a pluralistic society where other persons of strong faith and beliefs held different views.

The difference, IMHO, is that Biden respects others views and won’t seek to impose his. Palin does not seem to respect differing points of view (religious or otherwise) and acts like imposing her beliefs is a mission. That, to me, is more scary than a witch hunter.

Oh pllllllllease let this whacked minister dude love the camera.
Please let him open his witch huntin’ mouth and focus his eyes on the camera lens and tell the world what he thinks of Palin, his prayers to glide her into office and his agenda for citizens on this earth.

Please let him bristle at the notion of the Rs shutting him up.
I hope he swivels around on one shiney preacher shoe, turns his back on all of the white lawyers from D.C. and starts talking….to everybody. Anybody with a live camera or pen and pad. Let him preach to all of us. I, for one, can’t wait to hear it.

I hope he tells us exactly what he wants Palin to do for our country. Cuz Palin is already scribbling her agenda on long plane flights between stumps.

1. Supreme Court—check
2. Prayer in public school?—check (only Christian prayers, Muslims not allowed into the building)
3. That abortion thing—double check
4. Call Bristol to remind her to get married—check
5. …….

I’m tellin’ ya, as I’ve said since this Palin disease started to make us sick, the librarian is the key to bringing Palin DOWN.

That Wasilla City Librarian is THE person who knows , first hand, direct, woman-o to woman-o EXACTLY how Palin’s religious agenda and personal mission will affect every single American.

mark my words…rove’s new strategy is to come out “looking” and I mean LOOKING non-partisan….cheney and rove are no dummies…..if rove comes out saying palin is “not qualified”….he distances himself i.e. he becomes a distraction by HIMSELF…from the idea that we may have all had that he is detached….but his MENTEE….is driving what Palin says now…how convenient!

Back in the ’90s, Tom Robbins wrote a novel, Skinny Legs and All, in which one of the subplots was a fundamentalist wingnut preacher who intentionally tried to set up Armageddon so as to assist God with His plan.

So you can make this stuff up, but it’s a whole lot more enjoyable when you read it in a novel.

Just a word on the delicate nature of this entry, lead here by Engine Nighthawk. I think it is the knee-jerk attitude toward this guy’s beliefs – not the talking about them – that bothers me. Beliefs, unless they are just for show, (and who’s to say that about another’s beliefs- our own are not really always our own, examined, open to inquiry) are serious, and discussion of our own or each others requires a sense of respect even in the face of worry, shock, surprise, disbelief or whatever emotions different ways of thinking strike us. It seems to me that the information is of importance, but the attitude needs to be one of inquiry rather than ridicule, because as far as we know, these are seriously-held beliefs. As such, we don’t need to embrace them, or believe them, or accept them, but we need to meet them, initially, with questions rather than with answers. At the end of learning, we make up our own minds.

In HER case, I think I know enough about her to know, or believe, that she will use whatever and whomever she can for her own gratification and power-hunger, so I can see what use she would make of this, and it turns my stomach. I have no respect for her! But in his case, I don’t know him or where these beliefs came from or are going. So I worry about any sarcasm or condescension I may be tempted to call up about him and his belief system. I’m just saying…

Hope….the difficulty with Sarah Palin…and the group she has chosen to represent her beliefs…and THAT is key……..is that it is hard to separate the group belief (i.e. it is GOD”S will) from HER belief (power and fame) who knows? those who might belong to her “group” would say it is god’s will……..but only SHE knows for sure….that is the difficulty with fundamentalist beliefs I dare say those extremists who flew into the twin towers BELIEVED they were following god’s will….not a nice thing to verbalize, i know….but if you know ANYTHING about religious beliefs..it can take us to the extreme!

This is such an important election. I see this, I hear this and I wonder at times… why the fight. There is room for discussion on all issues and beliefs – in a free society. It is the closed mindedness of it all. It kills, injures and limits our collective hope for the future. Deb – I know. I understand that down to my core. I’m just saying that responding to things we don’t like or don’t understand with put-downs or jokes doesn’t help us mitigate the damage or pull people together. It’s difficult in this case, because we KNOW how P will use this, and we even know, in small part, how this guy has used it, if the story of the lady is true, but where is the fine line where we understand the tragic consequences of someone bringing this way of thinking into the White House without acting like ANYONE, from ANY culture who understands the world this way is an idiot? Or a buffoon? Or evil? Or a joke? SHE is all of these things, and her embracing this way of seeing the world and her place in it is beyond sickening – and so transparently egocentric it’s laughable. But actually seeing the world that way is serious business – both for the true believer and for its victims. Deadly serious. I’d like to see us talk about it with that in mind rather than thinking it’s kind of a joke. Not embracing it, but taking it with seriousness. I don’t know. I’m probably wrong. That’s just what struck me.

Oh my goodness! I still can’t believe that people in this country are still so superstitious and distort the Bible as they do. These radical fundamentalists use what they want to justify their racism, hatred, and intolerance of anyone who does not believe like them. They conveniently do not mention that Jesus also did not like “hypocrits.” But, more importantly, he talked about “love they neighbor” and “don’t judge.” As a teacher of second languages in the multicultural education area, I guess I can honor the unique cultural beliefs of world cultures such as those in Africa. However, when these religious practices spread hatred and fear, it is no longer about God…. but probably the opposite.

A leader in the United States is expected to embrace humanism and common fundamental decencies inherent in all major religions. If one chooses not to believe, that is also honored. The founders of the constutition created the separation of church and state to protect the fundamental rights of people to beleive what they wanted to. But, keeping it out of the government also protects others from being VICTIMIZED as a result of any one religion. They where really smart to do this. It is people like the radical fundamentalists that are in fact not honoring the spirit and intent of the constitution and the beliefs of the founders. Many of our founders were not Christians, by the way but Deists. Their ideas were founded in the new liberalism of the enlightenment of the 18th century. It is really fascinating if anyone wants to learn more about the philosophies of the founders of our constitution.

Palin’s popularity is starting to wear off. Obama/Biden are leading in the polls. On Larry King tonight, it was evident that women are starting to smarten up, as we all hoped. It is not about her being “a mom.” How she chooses to do this is her business. It is about the “kooky” and uninformed comments she makes during interviews. She is just not qualified for this position.

I personally find Palin’s religious belief’s extremely interesting, but not determinant in whether I support her (and trust me, I don’t).

America is so polarized regarding religion. Mainstream candidates hardly have a chance at all unless they profess to be Judeo-Christian. Do we have many (any?) Buddhist, Wiccan, Unitarian Universalist, Atheist politicians in the US Senate?

Deb – I’m with you about the pointy finger. Have you ever been to Disney? All of the employees (the “cast”) are instructed to use a two finger point if they need to, for example, indicate a direction. Even the signs use two fingers instead of one. The idea is that most people find a one finger point to be insulting and unpleasantly forceful.

That’s a very interesting story on ABC News (dot com) about Monegan’s trip being approved at the gubernatorial level. It would seem that the wheels continue flying off Palin’s wheels. I don’t know how good the Right Reverend Muthee is at catching real witches given the number of them in Africa who are parading as the heads of state, but he sure is proficient at hunting and finding a couple of real Rethuglican witches here in the darkest continent – North America – who wouldn’t lift a finger to stop the genocidal carnage in the Reverend’s home continent even if they could see it from their hometowns. Seriously folks, having grown up in central Texas as the grandson of a blind Assembly of God minister and having been “bathed in the blood of the lamb” by Billy Graham and Oral Roberts every time they swung through on their annual summer tent revivals, it is my considered opinion that fundamentalist ministry is the chosen profession of intentionally ignorant (not stupid), self-delusional people who crave power and influence much more than they crave peace and love. Their perfect alter-egos are the politicians they court. Beware the Ides of November. In the argot of Sarah and her ilk, false prophets (not profits) always wrap themselves in the robes of the righteous. People who are good don’t need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to attack the evil of others or to promote their own virtue. Scratch and sniff Palin is nothing more than a witch from the depths of her own personal hell and the Right Reverend Muthee is the serpent offering her the apple.

My understanding is that this is far out behavior, even for the religious right. That is, I suspect many evangelicals would be uncomfortable with this. I hear what “Hope” is saying, but . . .

As far as I’m concerned you cross the line when you start inciting people to stone an individual because you have convinced them that this individual is a witch.

This is not a joke. This is the kind of sick thinking of the Inquisition, of the Salem, MA of four centuries ago, and yes, of Hitler. Cultural differences can not be used as a blanket excuse to protect an obvious violation of human rights. If Palin and the people of her church know this man’s background – if they know how he built his reputation – and if they embraced him as a leader them, then they are just plain dangerous.

Freedom of religion does not mean you have the right to violate the rights of another individual, let alone harm them, based on your spiritual beliefs. This is the danger of the sort of religious extremism behind 9/11 and the Taliban. If Palin wants to dance with snakes, that doesn’t bother me. It certainly would make me reject her as a serious candidate for any public office, but she’s welcome to her personal faith. She can believe in the “rapture” or whatever she wants. As a voter, the knowledge of her beliefs impacts my vote because it says something about her character and her ability to reason. We have politicians who are telling us their beliefs every day because they assume this will make us want to vote for them. So yes, what I see as ridiculous beliefs will influence my vote – but I would not shun her as a neighbor for these beliefs as long as she showed me and my beliefs the same respect.

But I am sure as hell not ready to trust the future of my country to this woman.

Maybe there is still time for those of you in other time zones to get a donation in that will get a matching donntion too.

https://donate.barackobama.com/match

When you donate with the match on, they let you send a message to the person making the match. This is what I wrote in my message:

“My father spent 18 months in the Pacific in WWII. He was involved in the Battle of Tarawa. I served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971. My brother-in-law and oldest sister and others ran the ENTIRE medical relief effort ON THE GROUND in Afghanistan from 2002-2007. They have some stories to tell about the hapless Bush Administration.

This country is in very big trouble.

The best thing about Sarah Palin is that she put Alaska first. All of us in the lower 48 are dying to learn about real Alaskans. I hope Alaskans will continue to stand up and let their voices be heard. Surely Sarah Palin does not represent the best of Alaska. Prove us wrong. Call her out.

As for the witch thing, what can anyone say? When I was growing up my aunt held regular voodoo sessions in a spare room. When I went for my junior year abroad to France my other aunt held a family prayer revival service to protect me from the evil Europeans. If had political aspirations, would that disqualify me?

As for Rev. Wright, his sermons were fiery but they weren’t wacky nor were they necessarily unpatriotic. He was basically calling the government to task for terrible actions. They call this prophesy. (You have to admit, he’s entertaining). We all know both Democratic and Republican administrations have had their share of shameless behavior. That’s what governments do.

All this to say if Obama is smart he won’t even go near this witch hunt thing. I’m sure the press will pounce on this because they’re cyphers. They do not have the interest of the American people at heart. They barely report “news” anyway, and their so-called analysis is laughable. (KO should have left this one alone). I agree with other comments that said, Sarah Palin has plenty of other scary baggage without mentioning the witch thing.

But God help us if McCain-Palin prevail. Alaskans please make your voices heard.

Actually the Muthee witch business is a distraction from what’s really scary about Palin. When I heard it tonight on Olbermann’s show I was incredulous and amused. You just can’t make stuff like this up.

The trouble is that this is so extreme, so far beyond the pale most people will believe it is just made up. No one living in this country with a college education could possibly believe in this crap. And certainly no one that actually does believe in this stuff would be selected to be Vice President and possibly become President. No sane candidate would select someone like that. Would they?

What concerns me more is that too many people may find her more ‘moderate’ evangelical views acceptable. Personally I do not want a the potential leader of this country that finds it acceptable to disregard facts and conclude the earth is only 7000 years old based on 1700 year old book. That is a person who has no regard for facts, scientific method, or reasoned discourse. All that matters to them is their faith and what they choose to believe.

I also think it is extremely dangerous to have a leader that believes ‘Jesus’ with return in her life time and she will be one of the chosen. If your expecting the rapture in the next few years who cares about a little nuclear exchange. Sarah Palin is a dangerous extremist and John McCain has committed what should be considered an act of treason to put her in a position to potentially lead this country.

With some luck and lot of effort (AKM has helped the cause) McCain will lose and Palin will go back to a much less friendly Alaska. It may be too much to expect a recall, but hopefully she becomes a one-term governor and goes back to only be dangerous to moose.

Thanks Mudflats for your great blog. I’ve never followed one before, but I can’t wait to read yours in the morning and when I get home from work. You’re doing great work and I keep telling everyone to log into your website and read your brilliance.
I agree that religion is a private matter, but if a leader’s beliefs form their methods of ruling great danger can be right around the corner. I don’t want any part of bringing Armagedden or the rapture into a reality.
I’m glad to see a couple of posts mentioning “The Handmaid’s Tale”. The introduction of Sarah into the political race brought the title into my mind almost immediately. I’ll admit I’ve never read the book, but I saw the movie years ago. I watched it after I had been date-raped and had an abortion. The movie greatly upset me. Now I recommend it highly to everyone that is wondering what a overtly right winged religious government could become.
Sarah’s nomination has me enraged. She greatly jeopardizes women’s rights in this country. At the time I was raped, I was divorced with 2 young daughters, making about $3.50 an hour and trying to collect child support though the D.A.’s office. I was in California and my ex had gone to Texas.
I was even a practicing Catholic. The abortion was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but I am so thankful I had the choice, and to this day, 20 years later I know I made the right one. As a Catholic at the time I never thought abortion was the right thing to do, but it’s amazing how being put in the situation can open your mind. Going through with it gave me back the power in my life and opened my heart with compassion for others that I may of unfairly judged. While I am no longer a practicing Catholic I have to give the church a lot of credit for supporting me when I needed them. I was lucky enough to have an understanding priest hear my confession and another great priest help me get an annulment from my ex-husband. Religion and spirituality can add much to our lives, but our country was based on the separation of church and state. Let’s keep it that way!
Thank you again Mudflats for all you do and thanks to everyone that contributes. You’re keeping my hopes up that America does still exist and will continue to do so.

Something for the Christian Right to chew on regarding race in the Presidential election: Obama’s father was black. Obama’s mother was white. He only ended up black because GOD made dark colors the DOMINANT gene.

I read “The Handmaid’s Tale” and found it rather disturbing. More closely related to the whole Republican political arena would be Steven King’s “The Stand”.

Some people believe the strangest and scariest crap going and really want to push it on the rest of the world. If people want to believe crazy stuff that is their business, I don’t want to be forced to adhere to it. I have my own beliefs, thank you very much. :)

Well, I haven’t put on my wadders all day, since I’ve been to busy catching up with my own website. I see things have been moving pretty fast here in Madflats, and it’s become one of those blogs I just can’t stay away from these days. I joined the new forum and finally received the confirmation link, when I didn’t happen to be looking early, but found it awhile ago, so if I have a burst of energy tonight I plan to explore and see how I can contribute the discussions over there.

As to our current topic, I’m still just shaking my head. I’m usually not one to apply guilt by association and am tryiing to stay objective here so as to allow each to take their own religious path, however long they believe it to be -several million or several billion year. Heck, my own spiritual evolution began with me studing the Bible and listening to one of those preachers that would have me stoned to, if he knew some of the things I later studied and read about and thus came to believe. Thankful I didn’t live in Africa or the Middle East, so my libral education came, while not exactly free, much easier than for others in other countries, cultures and belief systems.

I’m not sure if we would even be discussing the guy at the top of the page, if the question of Rev. Right hadn’t been such and issue during Obama’s public veting, but obviously that veting has set the stage to have various issues on the table. And I can’t see where we need to censor public discussion. If the media wants to open this topic and see what bubbles up out of the P/M campaign, let’s just see if she has to denounce her life long spiritual home because the numbers go down in the polls or go up. Then we will know how many stonings to expect if she happens to have the straight line to God and get elected.

Time to take the dogs for a walk, later after I check out the forums.

POWERFUL story….and one that needs to be told an retold. Women come from different stories, and ALL need to be honored. Sarah Palin seeks to quiet those stories……those personal battles that we fight WITH ourselves and come out triumphant. We ARE women…and whatever battles we fight….it is our OWN individual battle, and Sarah nor anyone else can legislate that battle. It is between us, as a woman, and our god.

As a matter of perspective on Republican religi-wacky, Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindal, known for participation in exorcisms, was also on McCain’s list of VP prospects. I was hoping he would exorcise McCain from serious contention, but now it appears Palin (with McCain’s full cooperation and assistance) may pull that one off in Jindal’s absence. Thank you for Mudflats …

What can I say? More correctly, what needs to be asked. Is this 2008?

If she believes in spells and supernatural beings that live in snakes, this is her right as a citizen. As a person holding office and running for the ultimate office this is very very scary. Really scary!

If she doesn’t believe in possessed snakes, etc., and is using a group who sincerely does to further her voter base, then it’s really disgusting. Really!

I’m sure we all honor our precious foundation as a nation, that people have freedom of religion, and the right to think / worship anything they want. That’s their affair. But when a person offers themselves as a government servant, they need to be committed to the principals of impartially and fairly attending to and caring for the best interests of all the people who they serve. And to do it to to the best of their ability. Clearly this woman is unable to do that, she is handicapped, professionally, intellectually and ethically.

As far as figuring out her record, the capricious firings, the rape kits, the homophobia, the attempt to obstruct legal approved medically assisted abortion, the attempt to ban books, ignoring the reports / scientific findings regarding polar bears, the wolves from a planes of all things, that famous yes-no bridge, the pipeline, the nepotism and the e-mails …

I’d like to offer a paraphrase of an old Tibetan saying which goes something like this:

If a stupid person does dumb things
it is understandable because it is only to be expected,
If a smart person does dumb things
Then look for other reasons ….

Which ever way you cut it, Sarah Palin is an unacceptable candidate to be a public servant. And if she were being nominated as “Queen of America” or “the most written about celebrity” because the majority of Americans decided to install a monarchy or a movie set in Washington, she still wouldn’t be qualified …

I wouldn’t consider allowing her to occupy a position of power, any kind of “power” or “decision making” in our fellow citizens’ behalf, period.

What if the next door neighbor’s kid said said something like, “the devil made me do it” just joking around … or an angry person called some woman a “witch”… or a happy parent bragging “my daughter works like a demon on her homework!” … or an innocent herpetologist says something endearing about their prize specimen thereby affectionately personifying their pet python???? What are we dealing with here?

We already know what happens when someone challanges her. That’s bad enough. But now this!

The whole situation around the little governor is the stuff of a grade B Si Fi movie or horror flick. That’s okay in the cinema because it’s harmless, someone would be entertained and the popcorn seller would make some change.

But this is not okay in the White House. This is not okay as a representation of the American people. And I’m sure it’s not okay in Anchorage either. Looks like the good people of Alaska have been charmed, lied to and tricked. I would think that she owes them an apology and her resignation.

I won’t even get into examining the character of the candidate for our highest office who would inflict a person like Sarah Palin upon our nation. As a voter I’m insulted, as a woman I am appaulled.

As a member of a religious minority whose parents came to the US (I’m 1st gen American) to escape persecution, I’m angry and afraid of Palin’s world-turning agenda, which includes imposing extremist religion on the US in complete contravention of our Constitution.

CONSTITUTIONAL separation of Church and State — if, as Americans, we really believed in it and respected it, discussion of ANY candidate’s religion or religious views would be forbidden. JFK’s election was the beginning of the end of keeping religion out of the public forum. IT DOESN’T BELONG THERE — let’s remember it was Richard Nixon Republicans who made a huge issue of JFK’s religion, and have since hijacked the “moral high ground” in response to (mostly) backlash against the civil rights movement, voting rights movement, women’s rights movement, gay & liberation movement —

you know, all those humans who want a level playing field? Injection of religion into politics is just another cynical right-wing divisive ploy — and as long as we feed it, it works!~

I lost my wine when KO said he didn’t want Palin “…turning [him] into a newt!” LMAO.

I’m okay if Sarah Palin want her Pastor to pray over her.

What I’m NOT okay with is inserting her religious beliefs into the political arena.

What I’m NOT okay with is the conjecture that CUFI and their pretend friends, Lieberman and McCain, along with Palin’s pastor, Mufee, believe that man starts Armageddon and it starts by bombing Iran.

What I’m NOT okay with is typically rational citizens not looking at the issues, platforms and voting records of both candidates and voting based on that criteria versus religion assumptions and beliefs.

Alaska Citizens: Does this Church do anything useful for the Community, like feed and clothe the homeless, give the homeless shelter, help unemployed families with groceries, etc. Or does it just pray a lot about divisiveness?

History shows how the GOP lit the flame of the bigotry during the Kennedy election, with a host of anti-Catholic rhetoric.

Without the mechanisms of Old Man Daley… that bigotry may have changed history as we know it.

And then we have GOP candidates visiting Bob Jones University. Any other religious affiliated school would be fine: SMU, Vanderbilt…. whatever. But BJU is symbolic.

[…] In April 2000, Sarah Palin described & certified her city (Wasilla) as a “City of Character.” In fact, the seemingly innocuous descriptor – which links the city with the “International Association of Character Cities” – identifies Palin & her philosophy of governance with a particularly abusive & virulent theocratic Christian cult. At my age–I don’t worry about myself–but I do worry about my children and grandchildren. What kind of future will they have if this Mccain (chipmonk) and Palin (Caribou Barbie) get in office. Will it be God’s plan to have the draft?
Will it be God’s plan that we go to War–wherever? Will the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Will America become a 3rd world country?
I get sick and tired of hearing about chipmonk’s war record. As for being a hero, I didn’t see his name on the “Wall” inDC. Nor did I see a “D” or “R” after the thousands of names. I could go on and on about my thoughts on this election, but what I will do right NOW is WORK to get the Vote OUT. I am still able to make telephone calls and will work at the Dem.Hdg. Thomas Muthee’s churches are widely spread throughout Kenya, and the circumcision of females (FGM) is still very common within the country.

There is an alternative to FGM, but I believe that it’s safe to presume that a high percentage of young Kenyan females still go through FGM today.

“KENYA. Current status: According to a 1998 survey, 38% of women aged between 15 and 19 years old were estimated to have undergone female genital mutilation: …The Tasaru Girls Rescue Center offers girls an alternative rite of passage to the deep-rooted cultural practice, also known as FGM.By Scott Baldauf | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor from the March 13, 2008 edition”.

There is no record of Thomas Muthee or his church speaking out against FGM; therefore, because there is no known opposition by Muthee to FGM, and because it is an accepted practice within Kenya, then we can presume that Thomas Muthee, the other pastors of his church, and the tenets of his Word of Faith Church do not oppose FGM.

AKM …

Yes, there is. The Governor can call one or a vote by 2/3 majority of the legislature can. Folks need to call/write their reps and request one. I also noted that the Alaska State Constitution has no provisions for ethics violations. Time to call a Congressional Convention?

I would highly recommend everyone in Alaska become more familiar with the state Constitution …. it’s about 1/10th the size of ours and is easy to do.

When I was driving the Parks Highway this past summer, we went through that valley where Wasilla is. Somewhere around in there, there was a fire works stand with an inflated Gorilla wearing a bikini. We also passed a tent revival, and I said, “we shoulda gone to church there this morning, snakes optional”. (It was Sunday morning when we drove through there.) Having lived in Kenya, I can say that Pastor Muthee is the equivalent of a tv-evangelist over here. He’s a bit weird but by no means is he considered a complete nut. However, it is very odd that Governor Palin would listen to him and take his witch-hunting seriously.

I enjoy your site. We are fighting the fight over at http://tunc.biz/Race%20For%20President.htm. Sarah Palin scares the heck out of us.

Do not pay too much attention to polls. It does feel better that Obama is ahead, by 7-9 points in some polls. But what will matter:

1) GOTV–Get out the vote. Obama has a huge field operation. Huge. You couldn’t walk at the Pittsburgh Labor Day parade without tripping over an Obama field organizer, or a Veteran’s for Obama person or a union organizer giving out Obama stuff. Democrats have a huge registration edge, and even factoring for voters who will not vote for an African-American, getting that vote out will make the difference.
2) Keeping it honest–40+ days from the election, and Obama is fighting vote caging in Michigan. Watching this sort of thing is important.

If you have a son or daughter in college who is registered to vote, ask them to check their county election office to make sure they are actually registered. If you have moved, check your registration.

The Witch Hunter story got me to wondering: Who pushed this woman into the national spotlight? I’ve been hearing about her from a crackpot so-called libertarian talkshow nutjob in Pittsburgh for months. He was on the Palin for VP bandwagon a long time ago. I have watched Keith Olbermann’s broadcast for quite some time and I appreciate most of his views. I became aware of this blog since Gov. Palin was chosen as Sen. McCain’s VP running mate. I’ve found the blogs to be thoughtful, gutsy and down to earth as well as factual and opinionated and I’ve enjoyed reading most of the post.

I’m a progressive, a college grad with post graduate preparation and I am most of all a Christian and an advocate for social justice and the elimination of bigotry and biases of all types.

Christians believe there are forces, energies, powers and influences that exist beyond our material world. We believe there are paradoxes in the physical world that help to explain Scriptural teachings of extradimensialities to our existence.

Conventional revelations from the sciences of atronomy & physics has come quite a distance in providing verification of many Christian beliefs concerning the supernatural (beyond the natural or material) realm of existence.

Like many other religious belief systems, Christianity teaches us that there is a constant intercourse between visible (material) and invisible (immaterial) forces influencing our universe.

Just as Buddists believe that their monks are especially capacitated to both interact with and influence invisible forces, Christians also believe that members of our faith communities are especially capacitated to engage some supernatural forces and influence change in our natural environment.

Most Americans, including many American Christians are greatly influenced by Western philosophical beliefs including, but not limited to, materialism,(the theory that physical matter is the only reality and that everything, including thought, feeling, mind, and will, can be explained in terms of matter and physical phenomena), humanism (which entails a commitment to the search for truth and morality through human means in support of human interests; focuses on the capacity for self-determination, and rejects the validity of transcendental justifications, such as a dependence on belief without reason, the supernatural, or texts of allegedly divine origin), and secularism (Skepticism about the validity of religion, skepticism ordisbelief about the reality of religious [or spiritual] experiences and the view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education).

These philosophical viewpoints DO NOT negate either Christian beliefs or the existence of forces, energies, powers and influences that have their being beyond our physical realities.

This article therefore is, in my view, an afront to all who believe in the existence of supernatural forces that are outside our control and even beyond our imagination. It reflects a kind of religious bigotry that should not either be justified or tolerated in contemporary society.

I do not support Sarah Palin’s candidacy for VP of our great nation. I do not subscribe to her views on aerial hunting or her policies on the treatment of rape victims in Alaska. I do not believe that she is either intellectually or experientially qualified for the position she is seeking.

However, this approach – to demean her for her faith in a reality that is beyond our control is neither justified nor helpful. I sincerely hope that the conversation on this and other blogs and programs, including KO’s will return to an examination of Sarah Palin’s policy issues. In that way, the current political discourse in our country will be enhanced. On the other hand, this way only diminishes our public discourse and lessens the significance of this blog.

20 09 2008
LJP aka Revolver Trooper

jezreel,

Religion becomes a policy issue when (for example) religious groups advocate military action in order to bring about Armageddon. Or when zealots take over the Park Service and creationism is featured in education materials. Or when churches revel in tax exempt status but refuse communion to political figures who support policies opposed by the church or tell parishioners who to vote for from the pulpit. Or when religious groups attempt to ban books or control textbooks and curriculum, thus infringing on rights of free speech and thought.

I do not in any way demean Sarah Palin’s faith. It seems clear to me from public statements that she has made that she believes that God has a mission for her, her states, the US. military and the country. I am one person who has pretty much had enough of presidents who think they know the will of God. And I very much think voters should know that for Palin, there seems to be no line between her church and the State.

Well, obviously I’m radically outnumbered here. I think all of you are overreacting and blowing this out of proportion. I think maybe your only seeing one side of this story. Why does prayer scare you and why do you mock it? Perhaps the situation in Africa from what I read had to do with the woman “Mama Jane” being involved in witch craft and demonic rituals including voodoo. Folks, like it or not, Satan is real. If you invite him into your life and summons his powers, it will be devastating. However, true born-again believers in Jesus Christ, have the power thru the Holy Spirit to bine these demons and cast them out. That’s biblical. I know you don’t see it, but as the pastor said, we are in a spirital warfare and it will get worst. You don’t need to fear Sarah Palin, she is a good person and has the right heart and attitude. McCain pulled out an ace and ya’ll are just running scared and falling for anything negative you hear about her. Instead of taking time to do your own investigating and homework, you are too quick to believe anything you hear. You seem to let fear blindly lead you in any direction as long as it’s negative. For example, I did research on Pastor Muthee before I responded to this blog.

As far a Keith Olberman, his show has always been slanted toward his own personal views. There is nothing fair and balanced about it. That’s exactly why he was removed and lost his timeslot. He just couldn’t keep his mouth shut. As a journalist, you won’t make it very long if that’s the way you report the news. He is entitled to his opinions, but a better place for him, would be in a commentary situation. That way he can slant it all he wants.

Regan, this country is already split. That’s what’s wrong with it because we are no longer united as one nation under God. Half the nation has turned the other way and gone in the opposite direction away from God. The other half has been too passive and complacent for far too long.

As far as either candidate having all the right answers, neither of them do. They cannont save this country. God is the only one who can. The problem is we spend all our time looking to people to fix our problems and they can’t. The only hope for America, is if we as a united nation get on our knees and ask God to take this country back and to forgive us for turning our backs on Him. The problem with this is, there are too many unbelievers and skeptics for us to come together on our own accord. It will truly take a Divine intervention in order for this to take place.

Therefore, I call on the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts and lives of the Church of Jesus Christ to stand up together as one and be bold and repetitive in asking God to take this country back and make His presence known to it in Jesus’ name. To get out in the public arena and vote the Bible.

You see folks, there is power in prayer when you pray in Jesus’ name. The only reason you would have to fear that is, if you, yourself, are not holding yourself accountable for your own actions and choices you make in your own life.

Well, jlyndsignz05, would you mind calling in Jesus to bind the hands of those of Pastor Muthee’s flock who might be performing the female genital mutilations upon the unwilling young girls in Kenya?

And, when He’s through binding those hands, could you ask Jesus why He’s allowing the casual slaughter of so many innocent civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc?

I think the Jesus has been working hand in hand with Satan over the many centuries since His death, as He certainly hasn’t seem to have made any attempt to stop the waves of genocide and cleansings which regularly sweep His planet clean.

rubby

I’m trying to understand the reasoning in jlyndsignz05’s post, above, and here’s the synopsis I’ve come up with. I’ve filled out an implicit assumption or two in the argument so that it would make sense to me. Here goes:

1. America’s problems can’t be solved by people; only God can solve them.

2. However, God won’t do it unless we ask him.

3. Also, God won’t do it unless we all ask him together, united.

4. The country is currently too spiritually divided for us to all ask him together, united.

5. The only way for us to become spiritually united is through an extraordinary act of God (Divine intervention).

6. God might carry out this extraordinary act if some people ask him boldly and repetitively.

7. An effective way to ask him boldly and effectively is to “vote the Bible” (i.e., the Palin-McCain ticket).

If this isn’t a fair summary of what jlyndsignz05 is arguing, then I’d appreciate it if someone would please correct my misunderstandings.

First let me say that I don’t like McCain/Sarah and will not be voting for them.

One thing I notice is that all of you folks are Obama supporters. I think there are some things that need to be identified. Obama is supposed to be the big “change”. I have a few problems with the “change” he claims.

And let’s talk about important things that are far more important than whether or not abortions should be legal. In my opinion ALL POLITICIANS should NOT try to force their moral views down the citizens throats regardless of what they are. The Constitution does not give them (Federal Government) the power to dictate moral issues to this country but both side do it anyway.

What are the important issues you say?

The pending economic crash that is going to take our country by storm. Reagan, Clinton, and Bush are all part of that problem but the Federal Reserve is certainly at the top with then in regards to responsibility. We have a huge problem that is caused by credit expansion and making money out of thin air which the Federal Reserve does. This is all because our Government wants to SPEND way too much. McCain will just continue what Bush has done.

Obama is going to continue what Bush has done in this respect as well. He is going to SPEND even more. More military, more social programs, and more credit expansion. There is no difference to McCain in the respect of spending except possibly what they will spend it on.

Civil Liberties: We know Bush and the gang have destroyed them. You think that Obama will “restore” them, at least that is what I hear from Obama supporters. You are delusional if you believe that. Obama said he was going to vote AGAINST the expanded wiretapping, eavesdropping, and retroactive immunity. He said he would filibuster it is necessary. Instead Obama voted for it outright in a compromise with the Republicans. The Republicans got everything they wanted, the Democrats compromise was for $billions of social program funding in exchange for DESTROYING the 4th amendment of The Constitution. He completely turned the other way and voted for it. This is not the kind of change we were all hoping for after Bush.

To recap:
The fiscal/economic policy are basically the same, spend a lot more. The only difference is he will spend some of the money at home.

The Foreign policy is almost the same, more troops (Afghanistan), conflict with Iran. We cannot afford to have more conflict, we are already feeling it with what they have already done.

He has shown that he is willing to compromise The Constitution and our civil liberties when it suits him.

So in memory of the great South Park episode this election we are left with a choice. A choice between a turd sandwich or a giant douche for President. That episode fits perfectly for the choice we have today, no choice.

I encourage you to consider voting third party because if you vote for either one of these two you vote literally won’t count. Either one is going to deliver you and your grandchildren to the poor house and a decline into socialism, fascism, or whatever kind of Ism it is when they get done with us. This economic crash could possibly be just as bad as it was in the 30’s. Several economists have already warned that we are at risk (25% currently) of having a depression similar to the one in the 30’s.

Please for the sake of your country and The Constitution that orginally made this country great please consider other choices.

Best to you all, God help us.

– Dan

For rubby above. What she was saying is why do you call evil good and good evil. You all sound like you would prefer jeffry dommer on the ticket. It used to be that a person had to be a good person to hold office. Turn on the lights. Jesus is light and has no fellowship with darkness. Those in the darkness(ever seen the inside of a honkytonk) prefer the darkness over light. Look around you and notice who’s on your side. It’s all darkness. come in to the light. But you say you see just fine. The bible says if you would only admit that you are blind you could be made to see.

I’m starting to find it a little irritating how the media is putting such a negative spin on Christians & taking Palin’s speaches out of context because it is evident that she is strong in her faith. I would rather have a candidate who is open & honest with what they believe in, yet when they come out the media drags it down as a conspiracy theory. All these radical stories blown out of proportion to be contorted & warped to make some crazy conspiracy…I honestly hope people do not believe all this hog wash, but I’m sure that unfortunately many people are willing to be the puppets to the media now-a-days.

That’s just super, dave. But why does Jesus allow the flocks of His pastor, Thomas Muthee, to use Jesus’s light to see well enough to mutilate the genitals of those unwilling female children in Kenya? Why has Jesus not told His pastor, Thomas Muthee, to speak out against this evil practice (and surely Jesus does agree that this FGM is evil)?

SouthernBelle (09:15:15) :

Yes, indeed, but if what they believe in consigns 99.9 per cent of the world to a Hell which only exists in the deluded mindset of that candidate, what then? Hitler was open and honest in his beliefs (even wrote a book detailing those beliefs: Mein Kampf), but that didn’t make them right.

Some things I may lack, but I have one thing that you apparently don’t. Peace. That peace is the peace that passes understanding. Why don’t ya’ll sell some of your stuff and send the money to those poor mangled girls, or what if we could send them some ddt to kill the moquitos that infect them with malaria. (Thier life expectance is far less than ours. The objection to the use of chemicals to combat to moquitos was they didn’t know about the long term effects of pesticide on to people. It was told those raiseing the objections that they are dieing long before the pesticide would have any effect on thier health.) Oh, but we can’t because it was banned because if the buzzards eat a dead animal that ate some grass that has some ddt on it . then the buzzards eggs might crack when the buzzards try to set them. So it’s worth more to have more buzzards than to protect humans from disease. Your pretence about carring for people is talk with out subtance.

SouthernBelle–
Good to hear your feedback. Seems like maybe we think alike as far as the media blowing things out of context and the people who fall for it.

Halcrow–

Pastor Muthee’s flock is not responsible for the female genital mutilations upon the unwilling young girls in Kenya. Just because it’s not national headlines, how do you know he is not ministering to those people? You are quick to attack.

The “casual slaughter” of so many innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, are the direct result of the radical Islam Extremists. They are evil, because their only mission in life is to kill and destroy anything and everybody associated with freedom. Perhaps you could seek out some good news as a result of our presence there over the past few years. We have made a great sacrifice in the name of freedom. The national media won’t provide it for you. Unfortunately, you will have to dig to find it. But it’s there for those who really want to know and see the “other side”.

Jesus does not work hand in hand with Satan, He works through His body of believers, His “Church”. Agreed, which has not done all that it’s been called to do. God does intervene in horrible situations and one day all of evil will be destroyed forever. Until then, we all need to work together to do what we can to stop such atrocities. I don’t have all the answers only God does, that’s why it’s so important to seek Him in all we do. His ways or not our ways. It’s hard to understand why such horrible things happen in our world and why God allows them to take place. He wants us to come to Him for the answers and admit that we need Him. When you come to the realization that you “need” Him, then you will begin to understand.

rubby–

you are trying to understand the reasoning in my post, above. Let me answer your feedback observations:
1. America’s problems can’t be solved by people; only God can solve them.
TRUE. BECAUSE WE NEED HIM.
2. However, God won’t do it unless we ask him. TRUE, BECAUSE HE WORKS THROUGH PEOPLE, ALWAYS HAS.
4. The country is currently too spiritually divided for us to all ask him together, united. TRUE. BUT MORE THAN THAT, ALSO POLITICALLY, MORALLY AND ETHICALLY.
5. The only way for us to become spiritually united is through an extraordinary act of God (Divine intervention). TRUE. THIS COUNTRY USED TO ACKNOWLEDGE GOD AS THE REASON FOR THE USA BEING THE GREATEST NATION IN THE WORLD. NOT SO ANY LONGER. WE HAVE TAKEN THAT GLORY AWAY FROM HIM. HOWEVER, IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO TURN BACK. I KNOW YOU CAN’T SEE IT, BUT LOOK AT WHERE OUR NATION IS TODAY SINCE WE TURNED AWAY DECADES AGO.
6. God might carry out this extraordinary act if some people ask him boldly and repetitively. NOT TRUE. HE “WILL” IF WE REPENT AND TURN BACK TO HIM.
7. An effective way to ask him boldly and effectively is to “vote the Bible” (i.e., the Palin-McCain ticket). VOTING THE BIBLE IS NOT ASKING HIM ANYTHING, IT’S A STATEMENT THAT SAYS WE WANT LEADERS THAT WILL LEAD US ACCORDING TO HIS PLAN NOT OUR OWN. IS THE REASON YOU MENTIONED PALIN-MCCAIN IN THIS CONTEXT BECAUSE YOU THINK OBAMA-BIDEN IS “OUT OF TOUCH”? IF SO, I AGREE, I BELIEVE THEY WILL LEAD US FURTHER DOWN THE WRONG PATH WE ARE ALREADY ON.

jlyndsignz05, thanks for the clarification on my attempt to rephrase what you’d written earlier.

So as I understand it, “voting the Bible” isn’t a way of asking God for anything per se; it’s instead an act of religious devotion. And upon seeing such devotion, assuming that it comes from a sufficiently large number of people (?), God will carry out an act of Divine intervention that will unite the country spiritually. And when that happens, we can then collectively ask God to work though us to solve the country’s problems.

I hope I’m getting this right. This kind of reasoning is, to be honest, very alien to me, but I’m trying…

Having faith is fine.

But as a Roman Catholic I am sick of hearing that I won’t be “saved” because I don’t believe as Evangelicals do. You may deny it, but my daughter was told that when she sang at a Evangelical Christmas Choir a few years ago.

We need to respect each other’s faith, and not be constantly told one religion is superior than any other. And if a politician aligns themselves with one of those “superior” religions – they will never get my vote.

Thanks Mudflats, I knew you’d get to this story.

I want to add to Pastor/Witch Hunter/Witch Doctor Muthee’s church mission statement.

Yes, they want to “transform or take cites and nations” but they have another clearly stated mission statement which is: “TO RID THE WORLD OF FALSE RELIGIONS”.

Consider the ramifications of that statement. Consider the President of the United States (one heartbeat away) declaring “Holy War” on every non-Christian society.

Consider that Palin has stated that she firmly believes the rapture will come during her lifetime. Consider that she believes Alaska will be a state of last refuge.

Then ask yourself if there is much difference between her “holy” views and those of Islamic radical extremists who also believe in Holy war. She believes that the war with Iraq is mission for God. Assumably, that will be her view on war with Iran, Pakistan, North Korea and Russia. She believes that she too, is assured of her place in heaven.

Frankly, I would not be surprised to find that she believes that her heaven will be stocked with Virgin Caribou, AK-47’s and a meat grinder.

Be very afraid.

Please people. Our government is in a terrible shabe, our country is financially headed toward depression, and we are bombarded with psychological double-talk about our candidates. I, as a female, was offended that McCain would think I could not understand world affairs and would vote only for a woman. Well, wake up McBush! Hundreds of thousands of smart women will vote with our brains, not our gender. We will vote for someone with education, experience, who can answer questions and not just read from a script, has family values, works for the community, and has practical, achieveable, correct goals.

rubby, I’m not on here everyday, so I have to catch up on reading everything.
I like talking to you, you seem logical. At least you are willing to understand another view point. I appreciate that.

“voting the Bible” isn’t a way of asking God for anything per se; it’s instead an act of religious devotion (CORRECTION-COMMITTED SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIP VS DEVOTION TO A RELIGION). And upon seeing such devotion, assuming that it comes from a sufficiently large number of people (?), God will carry out an act of Divine intervention that will unite the country spiritually. And when that happens, we can then collectively ask God to work though us to solve the country’s problems (SOMEWHAT TRUE HERE-EXCEPT PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE DOING THIS OWN THEIR OWN, BUT THRU THE HOLY SPIRIT’S GUIDANCE AND CONVICTION-SO IN ESSENCE, GOD WOULD NOT “THEN” START WORKING, HE WOULD BE AT WORK THRU THE WHOLE PROCESS).

I hope I’m getting this right. This kind of reasoning is, to be honest, very alien to me, but I’m trying…(I HOPE SOME OF THIS MAKES SENSE, ALTHOUGH I’M PROBABLY CONFUSING YOU, I GUESS THE BOTTOM LINE OF MY POINT IS, GOD CAN BRING THIS NATION OUT OF IT’S DOWNWARD SPIRAL, HE IS THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEMS, NOT PEOPLE).

I’m still astonished by the witch thing and freaked out by the assertions of all other religious views being “false”

Today another Palin/Muthee scary video surfaced. This one from 2005. The witch thing is scary enough but in the 2005 video Muthee talks quite openly about preventing our children from learning about other religions and he talks about the importance of putting “believers” (of witches? of speaking in tongues? of aerial hunting?) into high government positions. The church elders, Muthee and Sarah pray for this together.

I think I ate a bad mushroom, can someone wake me from this bad trip…

I bet that we will NEVER see a full expose on that evil Joe Biden and HIS religious beliefs and practices. OH MY GOODNESS… he is a practicing CATHOLIC.
I mean, gracious, we ALL know what THEY do!

They pray to dead people (Saints)
They must be cannibals (believe in transubstantiation)
They have direct ties to those in other countries (the Pope)
In the past they have persecuted Jews and Arabs (the pogroms and Crusades)
They tortured and burned witches (Inquisition)
They made war on protestants (the hundred year war)
And I won’t even bring up those poor choir boys!

Seriously folks……and I hope you ALL realize this is the worst possible satire…the real perversion comes at the hands of the media! Personally, I am offended that we (America) have even tolerated this level of filth. Anyone’s faith can be smeared, but is THAT kind of witch hunt by the press the kind we really want?
