There are lots of women who have flirted with the McCain-Palin ticket following the addition of the first female Vice Presidential candidate since Geraldine Ferraro shared the ticket with Walter Mondale in 1984. Recent polls even indicate that white women are, on the whole, leaning toward the McCain-Palin ticket. Obama supporters have a visceral reaction to this news which usually involves cringing, and feelings of nausea.
But, it’s OK. Take a deep breath, and think about it. This is historic. This is the first time the Republican party has put a woman on the presidential ticket. Yes, the Democrats were there a quarter century ago, but it’s still historic. Palin hit the McCain campaign like a jolt from those little electric paddles that revive heart attack victims. (CLEAR! ….DZZZTT!….. It’s aliiiive!)
People in most of the country knew nothing about Sarah Palin, but what they were able to garner from first impression sounded pretty good – spunky, attractive, strong personality, reformer, down-to-earth hockey mom, youth, energy, special needs kid, great camera presence, confidence, and, of course, the surprise factor. We all love a surprise! So, why wouldn’t women be excited? The prospect of having someone in a position of power who comes at things from a completely different perspective than typical white male Washington insiders was….well….downright refreshing. And we love being refreshed, almost as much as we love being surprised.
However, to assume that this is the end of the story underestimates women. Granted, some will vote gender, just like some men will vote gender, and some of both genders will vote race. My team right or wrong. That’s just human nature.
But others will take the excitement over Palin’s presence on the ticket only as a starting point. They will like her until they have a reason not to. And those women are now being presented with some pretty good reasons not to. There has been so much information presented to the American people about Palin in the last few weeks, the facts are only now starting to settle out, and order themselves in our mental file cabinet. We’ve got a religion file, an environment file, a foreign policy file, a women’s issues file, an ethics file, and most of us have a few ‘gate’ files too – babygate, busgate, dairygate, bookgate, troopergate,….it’s mind boggling. But after our crash course in Palin 101, we are starting to make sense of things, and patterns begin to emerge.
The most important issue for women is Palin’s unwavering stance against reproductive rights for women and girls. The vast majority of women, even those who would categorize themselves as “pro-life” or “anti-abortion”, believe that exceptions should be made in the case of rape, or incest. Women who remember the dark days of back alley abortions, and the deaths of so many beautiful young women, know that abortion will never be eradicated. They want abortion to be safe, legal and rare, and they cannot relate to Palin’s position. Neither can women who really stop to think what life would be like in Palin’s America if their 12-year old daughter became pregnant after being raped by her father. Coupled with her position advocating ‘abstinence only’ sex education, this issue simply comes down on the wrong side for the vast majority of American women. The icing on the cake is the fact that as mayor of Wasilla, Palin fought lawmakers who wanted to stop Wasilla, from charging rape victims for their own forensic testing and ‘rape kits’ to the tune of up to $1200 per victim. Eventually formal legislation was passed to force Wasilla to abolish this practice since the mayor would not comply voluntarily. Most women, particularly victims of sexual assault, find this to be almost too outrageous to be believed.
Her policies on women’s issues, radical religious views, her anti-environmental and wildlife policies, lack of foreign policy experience, position on health care, unsettling ethics questions, along with her position on the war in Iraq, her sabre-rattling, and a host of other controversial issues cannot stay hidden. There is simply too much information out there, and it covers too wide a range of topics to be effectively suppressed. It may seem that there’s not enough time between now and the election to get this information ‘out there’, but think about what has happened since August 29th when McCain made the announcement he had selected Palin. There is time.
Palin’s nomination has not only energized the evangelical Republican “base”, it has energized women. It hasn’t energized all women yet. But, it has energized the ones who have done the research. And those women will talk to their friends. And more of the ones who haven’t had time to do the research, will start doing it. And the vice presidential debate will happen. And women will mobilize, just like the women did in Anchorage last Saturday at the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally. And those women brought men, and their teenage sons and daughters. I was there, at the largest rally in Alaskan history, and it was powerful. The presence of the women at that rally, waving signs that held Palin accountable for her radical views, gave permission to women everywhere to question, and learn, and think about where they cast their vote. Communication will happen. It can’t be stopped.
Add this to the mix. N.O.W. (the National Organization for Women) has come out with an official endorsement, not for McCain-Palin, but for Obama-Biden. NOW has not endorsed a presidential candidate since Mondale-Ferraro in 1984. In addition to the endorsement from N.O.W., the Obama-Biden ticket received endorsements from Business and Professional Women/USA, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Congress of Black Women and the Women’s Information Network.
“It’s extremely disappointing that an organization [NOW} that purports to be an advocate for all women not only opposes but feels compelled to go out of its way to criticize and make negative comments about the only ticket in the presidential race with a woman on the ticket,” Palin’s spokeswoman Maria Comella said in an e-mail.
What this powerful endorsement says is that regardless of the chromosomal makeup of the Republican ticket, they are simply wrong on the issues that matter most to women. McCain’s record is dismal, and so is Palin’s. Their records would be dismal regardless of their gender.
And one thing about women’s issues…they are not just women’s issues. They are people issues. Everyone has a mother, or a sister, or a wife, or coworker, or girlfriend or daughter who will have to live under the supreme court appointments of the next administration. So, have faith. Informed people make better decisions than uninformed people, and the natural law of information is that it gets dispersed. The more people learn, the less they support Palin, and the McCain-Palin ticket. There is still time.

Sweetness. Are you going to do anything on the e-mail hack, Mudflats?
Oh yeah … FIRST!
Great!!
And MadSkillz, I haven’t seen you in a while. Everything OK with Ike?
Today is a good day!
Sweet.
That is one great sign. Needs to be a Mudflats T shirt!
…need a list of all the ______-gates and cards played thus far in this election.
Very well said – these are “people issues,” not “women’s issues.” I’m thrilled with the NOW endorsement. I’ve been afraid that the powerful women’s groups have been so upset that Hilary wasn’t the nominee that they would sit this one out rather than do the right thing for all of us. I’m very proud of NOW for what may have been a hard decision (but which, truthfully, was probably easier than it would have been had Lieberman been McCain’s pick). We can thank NOW for this, and we can also thank Palin, who has energized the liberal base like nothing we could have imagined…
AKM: So glad you wrote a post about this. NOW’s endorsement is sweet irony, when McCain thought he could so easily sway women by picking Palin.
AKMuckraker, you consistently post the most cogent, thoughtful essays on the issues that are important in this election. This blog is an inspiration.
a.ka. hose hotrod palin
I’ve been visiting here since the vp pick, but this is my first comment.
Thanks so much for your integrity and your courage!
Things are definitely swinging our way now! (oops, no N.O.W. pun intended) and I’m sure your diligence, AKM, and the efforts of these mudflatters to draw MSM attention to your posts has been a huge factor in that swing.
I assure you all that MN will go for Obama, despite the polls showing it close or even leaning Red at present. We’ve little tolerance here for the low road and a long history of saying “thanks but no thanks” to b.s. —and meaning it. Hopefully, that will also mean Senator Norm Coleman is on his way out. Last polls showed a dead heat between him and Al Franken.
Courage my friends.
And let’s get out the vote!
Well, this is great news!
(but more local news please? what are people in Alaska saying? you are our earpiece!)
did i say THANK YOU???
THANK YOU!!
Breaking: Palin’s Yahoo email account hacked.
http://gawker.com/5051193/sarah-palins-personal-emails
War plan = “God’s plan.” (Palin)
Energy plan = Drill more oil domestically, especially in Alaska, because that would make us energy independent. (McCain/Palin) Let me get this straight this straight. Even though global oil prices may be at $100 dollars a barrel, we will retain and use any oil found domestically as if it were only valued at $50. Is that what energy independence means? And Exxon and Shell would agree to this charity rate because …?
The economic “mess” plan = “stopping the abuses and that violation of the pubic trust.” (Palin on Hannity today) We do that by … ?? “I’m always for less regulation…I am fundamentally a deregulator.” (McCain). ‘We need a commission to study the problem’ (McCain)
McCain/Palin = ‘Maverick reformers’ … ???
Maybe the public is starting to pay attention and, unlike McCain campaign manager Rick Davis, they believe this election is about issues.
$1200??? Holy crap! It would be outrageous at $5, but this is, well, um… I’m speechless.
Your post brought tears to my eyes. I’d heard the news hours ago, but I don’t think it was until I read this that I started to feel hopeful again. It’s been a long couple of weeks… maybe NOW, with N.O.W.’s announcement, we can get the MSM to start hammering Palin on the ISSUES!
Keep up the GREAT work!

@ Gina. Yeah. Made it back to Houston on Tuesday to a ton of branches and no power. However, no real damage. I am thankful. Thanks for asking.
I checked out some of the screenshots of her e-mails – oh, it’s funny.
Here’s the link: http://gawker.com/5051193/sarah-palins-personal-emails
It’s funny she deleted both accounts after folks were requesting them.
The funniest part was Bristol’s phone number. Apparently, gov sent a message to Bristol’s cell phone. For the love of God, I won’t put it here, but it starts with a 907 prefix.
I couldn’t agree more. My wife is aghast at Palin’s mean and vindictive views and I certainly hope that women do the research and learn what Palin stands for. There are millions of Palins in the country and they will vote for her, but if you want government and religion to stay out of your bedroom then do not vote for McCain and this women.
Did Palin really eliminate the state WIC (Women’s Infants & Children Program) share from the budget? or did she move it to another line? or was it restored?
Breaking news: Palin’s Yahoo email account hacked.
I think this is the first time a political campaign/information has been conducted on the internet (thanks to John McSame and his invention of the Blackberry) and it’s working. It’s not instant, like MSM news, but so many more people are being reached, and surfing links and reading other blogs (HuffPo for example) and this is the first time I have ever received an email from a candidate asking for MY opinion. The Obama campaign’s email has been discussed on several other threads before) but I am convinced to my bones that this is making a huge difference! We are in amazing times with breathtaking consequences, and we ARE making a difference! So take hope Mudpuppies, we have a world wide audience, we are reaching more people than we know, and we will continue to spread the word— the truth— and the truth will out!
@ Itchy Brother – LOL but a wii bit late.
You have to be proud of the N.O.W. Their first endorsement of a presidential candidate since Geraldine Ferraro shared the ticket with Walter Mondale in 1984.
That took a lot of balls, so to speak.
Cudos as well to the Business and Professional Women/USA, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Congress of Black Women and the Women’s Information Network.
Sorry for the ignorance.. how influential is NOW? Is it left/right leaning? In other words, will this alter views of conservative voters or are NOW members part of the choir?

Did you see this CBS News article a while back?
Looks like our VP candidate from Alaska voted against subsidizing rape kits in the event of a rape, choosing to put the money into her new sports arena instead (which ultimately ended up being a money pit for her state). It took Joe Biden to write up legislation in support of it. Surprise, surprise, McCain voted against it.
So, basically Biden was looking out for rape victims, knowing full well that forensic evidence is key to finding sexual predators. Palin and McCain didn’t see a need for it. WTF!!
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/12/politics/animal/main4443114.shtml
If the campaign can’t make SP available for a real press conference, than I’ll use my imagination.
sorry, to be off topic….its been a busy day with a crappy market to boot…I need to vent.
is it me, or does SP’s Gibson and Hannity interviews have a strikingly similar cadence to another “coached on the key issues” candidate?
SP’s Hannity inteview teaser (note her talking points at the end)
Please compare to this future leader
a good night to all.
Mr Write would be very proud …
; )
You’re really making a difference.
For the record – a co-worker called the Bristol phone number but was laughing too hard to leave a message.
I just took a good look at the electoral map over at RealClearPolitics.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/#data
If you look only at the first numbers (no toss-up states), McCain appears to lead, but add the toss ups and Obama surges ahead. Then, look further at the state-by-state figures. Pay particular attention to the trend. In almost every case, the trend is towards the Dems. Read each line from right to left — the way my daddy taught me to read menus, especially on a date
. Compare 2000 to 2004 to now. Take heart. And we know that the polls leave out a lot of young and first time voters and that some of them don’t correct for registration percentages.

CHANGE!
Sarah speaking in Cleveland about bailing out AIG said “Certainly AIG though with the construction bonds that they’re holding and with the insurance that they are holding very, very impactful for Americans, so you know the shot that has been called by the Feds – it’s understandable but very, very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one,” she said.
It’s not construction bonds!! It was the CDS and CDO paper they held that caused their problems. She needs more briefing and a fast Econ 101 class.
Who did NOW support in the past 4 elections? Are they left or right leaning?

they didn’t support anyone in the last 4 elections

I wonder if McCain thought of that yet?

Love the map gadget showing the international interest you are generating.
McCain/Palin tried to sell a bill of goods that “real” women support McCain/Palin and only the snobby elites were opposed. Your videos of the Women’s Rally in Anchorage opened eyes worldwide and exposed (yet another) lie by McCain/Palin.
Real women care about and work to address real women’s issues. Palin does not qualify.
OK… hot button time, don’t forget, Biden sponsored VAWA (violence against women act) thank GOD, so even the women who are working against all odds in AK are getting money for their Domestic Violence Shelters.
BTW October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and my sisters and brothers in Alaska might send a little $$ to your local shelter and be a good deed doer
Something I do every little while is google Intrade Prediction Markets, this is an indicator of where the big gamblers lay their money, it shows state and pres numbers, and is up to the minute. Like polls only probably more accurate. As they saay – follow the money.
Okay the way I see the e-mail hacking of SWWNBN’s account is thus: There is a Group called Anonymous. They have been attacking the Church of Scientology for many many months. They have many very talented hackers who have been hacking Scientology for awhile. Go to Google, type in anonymous scientology. Anything and everything you want to learn about this group is there. In a way they are doing a good thing. LOL
Yea! They don’t normally endorse and it’s just great they picked Obama/Biden.
I heard someone from NOW being interviewed and she said they are the better ticket for women in all areas.
Do you find it difficult at times to talk to friends and neighbors about why you support Obama? This article has a couple of good ideas….
http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=18868
I will not be surprised if we get to suddenly see a hissyfit of Gigantic proportions from eith McCain or Palin within the next month.
SNL is making fun of her, MSNBC (generally) doesn’t like her, and now women’s groups don’t like her…. Boo… Hoo… Hoo…
Itchy Brother…..your avatar is rather scary.
NOW has come of age. It’s not about whether the ticket has a woman on it, IT’S ABOUT THE ISSUES THAT AFFECT WOMEN, AND THEREFORE ALL OF US. Right on, Sistas!
BREAKING NEWS: Don’t know if this is true, but the Dallas Morning News’ Trail Blazer blog reports that Bob Barr is challenging both Obama’s and McCain’s right to be on the ballot in November. If this is true (I haven’t been able to confirm thus far) and if Barr wins (TX Secy of State’s Office says everything is in order), McCain’s camp is probably apoplectic right now.
Hope this link works: Bob Barr Challenges Repubs’ and Dems’ right to be on Texas ballot
If it didn’t, just cut and paste this. http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/09/bob-barr-busts-ballot.html
@AK49 Right on indeed!
I have often been puzzled by the seeming desire of the electorate to vote for someone who is “just like them”. Someone they could “relate to”.
I always thought we would want the smartest person in the room, the most qualified person in the room to be our head of state, not some average everyday person. Between Cal State and Harvard, I want the Harvard scholar.
It is an approach to voting that I cannot get my head around, and it led me to think… In the Olympics, we did not send a team of athletes who were “just like the rest of us”, we sent THE BEST WE HAD! When we get on that world stage or in that world arena, we know that the other countries are sending their best athletes, their best competitors, the BEST they have to offer to do battle with us. We have to compete on that same level, or lose.
When we get into that world politics pool, I want Michael Phelps swimming for my team- not the guy down at the gym who is just like me. I want the BEST!
It is the same for my government, my president/vice president. I want the BEST there is to choose from- not the one who is just like me, but the one who is much smarter and wiser than me. I want the BEST.
@AlwaysAmazed1(15:11:32)
)
Sorry. I meant to say McCain’s camp will be apoplectic.
@madskillz,son: Who did NOW support in the past 4 elections? Are they left or right leaning?
You’re back! We missed you and were beginning to wonder. NOW is a left-leaning organization only because of the pro-choice issue (i just refuse to go pro-life, pro-abortion…the issue is CHOICE) and equal pay. They have been out of the picture for a long while – MS. used to be considered a “NOW” publication because of its tie with Gloria Stenheim. Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh, the good old days.
AKM, I would think Ms. Palin would consider this a victory for her “moral values.”
OMG, Lou Dobbs is doing a press conference countdown between Obama (13 days) and McCain (35 days).
New post on Daily Kos – Pailin officially exposed as pathalogical liar – it’s great, can’t figure how to link it though.
Re: Palin’s emails – how dumb can one woman get? Emails are never ever gone – ever-you can delete them and also shut down the account but those little devils are available in the hidden corners of your computer and your isp server. Tee Hee!!
Well, we do know how dumb she can get, after all.
I just got a call from the mccain campaign headquarters – caller id blocked from sender- inviting me to drive 40 miles to a rally for palin and it is free – all I have to do is drive to st. paul headquarters to pick up my ticket (another 40 miles) and then head over to the rally. I live in western wisconsin so this would be an all day trip for me. The rally is in Blaine, Mn if there are any women against palin folks who want to appear.
Anyway – they are really having to dig to get people to show up at their rallies. So sad!
Pollsters now saying Obama is up 5 points.
NOW – National Organization of Women supports free choice, women’s health care issues, and a host of women’s issues. They are very judicious in their endorsements and getting involved in elections. This is a huge step for their organization. Being a non-profit they have to be careful. Check out their website for more information about the good work that they do.
I’m one of those that has done the research and you bet I’m talking to anyone who will listen and even a few that won’t.
Speaking of vaginas….
Lou Dobbs is really starting to grate on my nerves.
Maria Comella is a moron.
Way to go, N.O.W.!! Thank you for not being sucked into the vortex of stupidity.
Please donate to my personal fundraising page for Obama/Biden on behalf of Alaska’s wolves. Send a message to Palin and the Republicans that family values and right to life include Alaska’s wolves and we don’t want them shot from airplanes!

UK Lady, I wondered the same- was the email hack a Rovian attempt to distract..
Also, I think it would be good for all of us to go to the NOW site and applaud their endorsement and show our support. They are going to get a lot of grief.
Oops! That didn’t work…
The Vagina Monologues author has thoughts about Sarah Palin:
http://www.spectrumz.com/z/fair_use/2008/09_05.html
(…and you don’t get much more American than baseball and soda pop!)
When McCain first picked a youngish woman, I wanted to be happy for the decision – until I found out who Sarah Palin was, and more importantly, how poorly she was qualified. Essentially, she was chosen to add “energy” and “jazz” to the ticket because she was young, attractive (to some, anyway), and dynamic. She was picked for the same reason women have so often been chosen for supporting roles – her looks. Not her qualifications, not her education, not her experience – but only because she looked cute.
I worked hard for my education, and have tried in every job I’ve had to do the best job I can and NOT try to skate by on superficial things, but to be judged by how well I do the job, just as a man would want to be. To hear someone sneer about the “elitism” of being educated, when the only way this country is going to get out of the environmental sewer it is moving toward is VIA THE EFFORTS OF EDUCATED, TALENTED PEOPLE makes me furious – and then the cries of “sexism!” from the Republicans for people having the effrontery to actually ask pretty little Sarah questions, and not being nice to her because she is a girl – that clinched it for me.
I have no desire to be a trophy wife, and I don’t want the political equivalent as president. If I could do a better job based on my own sense and education, it’s not a good sign for the vindictive, mean-spirited, small-minded, petty little ice princess of the north. She represents everything about the back-stabbing junior-high school girls that most women leave behind when they grow up and start acting like adults. Palin still strikes me as immature in some ways.
As I told someone else, just because I HAVE boobs doesn’t mean I have to VOTE for a boob.

I agree. And in general I’d pick Harvard over Cal State or Univ. of Idaho any day. But Dumbya got his MBA from Harvard. I imagine they’re not exactly using that as a recruiting tool these days…. I want people who got into the top schools on their own merits, not because of family connections. Let’s not forget the difference.

That would be too boobs! McCain for picking her and Palin.
People: Male and female are SEXES, not GENDERS. Ever take a biology class?
GENDER only relates to LANGUAGE, specifically the Romance languages which have three GENDERS: feminine, masculine, and neuter.

nsfwm — My geography may be way off, but I believe Western Russia/Eastern Europe is represented on the map. There just aren’t nearly as many people living in Eastern Russia near Alaska, and most of the major cities are closer to Europe than to the Pacific Ocean (another reason Palin’s “close to Russia” claim is getting more ridiculous by the minute).
It’s the ECONOMY STUPID! Women are always the ones hurt most in a bad economy, and it’s time for women to step up and reject the party that has caused this HUGE debacle. McCain is a deregulation man, and has been for 30 yrs. No one in the Repug party can duck the responsibility for this mess.

“”It was a time of asking the girls to vote on it, anyway. And they voted unanimously, yes. Didn’t bother asking my son because, you know, he’s going to be off doing his thing anyway, so he wouldn’t be so impacted by, at least, the campaign period here. So ask the girls what they thought and they’re like, absolutely. Let’s do this, mom.”

My thoughts, exactly. Is there anything incriminating? I couldn’t find anything. Since these documents were acquired illegally they couldn’t be used in court anyway, could they? This has banned book list written all over it.
If anyone is being “sexist”, it is the McCain campaign and their Republican followers. Palin’s spokesperson, Comella, is out of touch with the basics of the feminist movement and N.O.W.’s doctrines. It has been a long time since we have revisited the women’s movement that was so strong in the ’60s and “70s. Many of the young women in my classrooms do not “get it.” They do not realize that they are still being discriminated against. N.O.W.’s endorsement brings light to the fact that we need to revisit just what women have fought for for centuries in this country. True, WOMEN in general have made gains in this election in many ways. If we want to be specific, we need to remember that women need to be “qualified’ for the positions we want. Affirmative action and gender alone is not what we fought for. It is indeed sexist for the McCain campaign to place an unqualified, inappropriate female candidate in this position just to get votes from unsuspecting, uneducated women and “ga-ga googling” men. If I were Palin, I would not want to partake in such a sham.
By the way, in the Gallup Poll, Obama is ahead 47%, McCain 45%
NOW doesn’t betray women… PALIN betrays women!
I think what sickens me the most is how divided people are over this. Should men only be allowed to vote for men? I don’t get it.
accusing the National Organization for Women of being sexist. quite, quite brilliant. is it just me, or have Karl Rovian tactics made the world of American politics seem like Alice In Wonderland?

I think someone needs to organize a National Women Against Palin day. I wish Mudflats would take the lead on that. We in Kansas City will join and get a lot of women to participate is my guess. I keep hearing more and more women say that now that they’ve begun finding out about her they are horrified.
I am a huge Obama supporter but I don’t think a NOW endorsement is any big deal. To be expected.
Mccain is talking about FISH….their talking about oil and he says…”yes there’s fish, the fish like to be around the oil rigs…sooo lots of food too.”
Interesting thing is a question was asked, she answered a bit (stuck to drill baby drill) and then Mccain took over. Not sure she’ll be taking any more
Mudflats:
Will you marry me?
Senator McAllistor is on CC’s radio show right now. During the break one of his staffers called him to tell him they need to contact security. He received a very threatening call. What the damn hell is going on????!!!
@ Andrea… YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Am so proud of NOW! (Card carrying member since before most of you were born)
Regarding questions about NOW -
NOW is sort of influential. They were influential enough to pressure Mondale to select a woman to be his running mate (several elections ago), but I think they kind of blew their wad with that. We don’t hear a lot about them, but we know they are around. I don’t think it’s as big an endorsement as newspapers or unions. It probably appeals to people who would going to vote for Obama/Biden anyway.
What is remarkable is that it indicates the passions that are festering against Palin. NOW hasn’t endorsed anyone for a long time, despite the fact that other candidates have been anti-abortion and want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. So it seems that it isn’t just the anti-abortion stance that got them to move.
AND
I would not have been surprised if gender of the candidates was very influential in who they picked. This gave McCain/Pain a huge advantage. They are very much focused on women’s issues AND promoting women. Which is fine. But it also means that it’s quite remarkable that they came out AGAINST a woman, when they haven’t taken a stand in a presidential election for quite some time.
I have a hard time believing the polls are accurate. I have NEVER seen the passion AGAINST Sarah Palin. Not from Clinton-haters. Not from Bush-haters. I was at a workshop on the week-end on meditation – and someone couldn’t help but bring up how distressing “the news” was. this almost compelte stranger and I talked for several minutes afterwards including telling her to be sure to check out mudflats (and that was against the rules – it was a quiet retreat!!! – and given this was part of a longer class, we tend to follow these rules so the teacher doesn’t scold us)
My understanding is that the polls don’t call people with cell phones – only land lines. I’d guess that there is a great percentage of republicans/conservatives among land line and greater number of democrats/moderates/liberals that go strictly with a cell phone.
I also noticed that in many of the swing state polls, the undecided are larger than the spread between the two candidates, making the state a toss-up. I assume more people will decide on Obama at the last minute. People who like McCain and Palin KNOW they like them. His platform isnt’ designed to appeal to swing voters.
@ Ky Fork Decoy Palin (15:28:25)& UK lady (14:59:30) :
This hacking of her e-mails was done by a group called Anonymous. They have hacked into the church of scientology.sites and even taken down their servers for a day at a time. Please go here to read about them: http://www.kobrascorner.com/rant/anonymous-vs-scientology.php. They are pranksters. They go after groups which they have absolutely no respect for.
Slap Spears Palin
Here is an artical on The American Spectator (a far far right rant blog) that any sane person will understand for what it is – an attempt to make the claim that Sarah Palin is divinely annointed by God.
http://www.americanprowler.com/dsp_article.asp?art_id=13886
I know many of you don’t want to post links to wingnut blogs, but it is important to know what they say and how they rationalize their illogical views.
Remember one thing. Joan D’Arc was a blood-thirsty schizophrenic who stirred up a political bloodbath. The comparison with Sarah Palin is a two-edged sword and I believe she will meet with the political equivalent of what Joan D’Arc received. Fire.
oops…sorry not McAllistor. I think its Mirakowski or something like that. Can you help me Alaskans?
Weilechowski. I wish he’d change his name…
@ UK Lady and KY Fork,
Not to go off-topic, but the AP released a story about this hack. Plus, the Secret Servuce is involved.
Here’s an official story link: http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/09/hackers-target-palins-email-ac.html
The Dallas Morning News is a real news organization, and it’s a reposting of an Associated Press story. The hack was done – the screen shots reveal what the hackers saw. The e-mail accounts were both deleted. However, what could really be a fly in the ointment is – the Internet is forever. Those same hackers could leak stuff out during the campaign that reveals more and more – like a strip tease. Either way, it’s bad for her that the e-mails are out there.
Here’s a snippet – The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply.
It is so encouraging when I read this post that many of us never lost our “Power to the People” roots. I’m with an earlier post – we need to form a National Women Against Palin day. I’m in. So many people have forgotten WHY we fought or what we won and have subsequently lost. We have to wake this country up!
@ Penny
There’s no real need for NOW to protest Palin – they did by endorsing Obama/Biden. That’s the nail in the coffin. Oh, believe you me – NOW will let where they stand be known.
@BigSlick…I agree …its frightening. I cant read those blogs. They are truly disturbing and my blood pressure goes sky high
BTW – my Palin name is Clamp Noodle Palin
Is clamping your noodle an acceptable alternative to abortion?
Todd, if you are reading this, I’d appreciate your answer.
Hi mudflatters! Just here trying to catch up on all the news since last night.
Actually, although it is a good thing that NOW has endorsed Obama, I think it is even MORE significant, given that five other women’s groups have also endorsed him, including Business and Professional Women. This is awesome support from WOMEN!
@Proud2B yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where are my elephant bellbottoms– remember those? Sorry, trip down memory lane… back to regular programming…

Mud, Thanks again for the updates and insights. Very Telling of NOW-
Yes, People, new media, please….. let’s talk issues, positions and policies and not gender or race for that matter. This campaign has gotten so soft on that point. I don’t care if there is a Tranny with a pink feather boa, riding a unicorn in the whitehouse as long as it is an intelligent someone that will listen to the people, formulate a plan, then take action to get this country back on track. People are People we need to Invesitgate our choices and Vote with our brains not our predispositions!
Hackgate:
And now, MSNBC is on it … http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26761804/
@Nebraska…oh my goodness! I remember elephant bell bottoms…we are getting old my friend.
Sarah’s Hacked E-Mail Account
I sincerely hope Anonymous made copies of everything and are sifting through to find the juiciest bits.
More on Palin’s e-mail troubles – serves her right for doing state business on a freakin’ Yahoo account. Epic phail.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26761804/
Palin’s anti-abortion stance is the tip of the (Alaskan) iceberg.
Her fundementalist fellow travellers don’t want anybody to use any form of birth control. They don’t want anybody to have sex at all, unless it is between married people (preferably married to each other) for the purpose of reproduction.
Or if it’s an immaculate conception. Like Palin’s daughter had.
incidentally, feminists in Britain hated Margaret Thatcher (and quite rightly so). never were they attacked for this in the way that Palin’s people are turning on the NOW. it was to be expected that lefties would have a problem with a rabid rightwinger; gender has/had nothing to do with it!
@ Big Slick
Trust me, I think they saved everything. They will likely release it until they are caught, or have sent it to a news organization in full. I bet the AP has a copy tucked away.
Either way, Palin is about to be bow down.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26761804/
Regarding the NOW endorsement… Oh, SNAP.
I guess McCain’s little ploy didn’t work so well. For NOW to endorse a ticket with two men as candidates shows how screwed up the McCain-Palin policies are.
@Laurie… and wise?
Shout Out Deb!!! Woohoo for Colorado:)
“The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply.”
The AP did not comply!!!! Let FREEEDOM ring!!!
I am nearly 100% convinced that the “hacked email” is a job by Karl Rove or his ilk — some sort of McCain sympathizers, trying to get the media to cover this. And their hope is that the public will start feeling sorry for her because she is being “attacked” so viciously.
Trying to make her a martyr.
It is soooooo easy to create an account, create fake emails and fake a hacking.
I’m impressed with the NOW endorsement!
I just got a message from my daughter-in-law in Fairbanks, who said she told a conservative banker friend of hers in Atlanta that her son was on the rifle team in school. His reply: “How very Sarah Palin of you”!!
Keep up the good work.
[[Here is an artical on The American Spectator (a far far right rant blog) that any sane person will understand for what it is - an attempt to make the claim that Sarah Palin is divinely annointed by God....]]
BigStick, the American Spectator can be bought. Richard Mellon Scaife did it during WJClinton’s Nookiegate. Scaife funded the “Arkansas Education Project,” the greatest snipe hunt Arkansans every had the pleasure of taking big-city gullible journalists on.
One thing about Scaife…if you don’t perform, he cuts you off and NOW. In fact, when the Spectatr refused to publish the Vince-Foster-Hillary-Killed-Him theory, Scaife cut off the funding in MID-YEAR.
I don’t know if Scaife is funding Spectator at this time, but Scaife is a religious nutball and he is really very prissy. He also is a bigot. So it’s possible.
hey gal! go BLUE, Colorado!
Gee, you’d think that $50,000 she used to redecorate her office could’ve bought at least a few rape kits.
http://politicalinquirer.com/2008/09/06/even-rednecks-have-standards/
Rednecks don’t all support Palin as well. It’s not about being a gun-toting redneck, it’s about being a nut job and we have plenty of those in our small towns.
Chelsea: Now you know that rape kit comment was … uh … er … sexist … or something.
Big Slick: “Sarah’s Hacked E-Mail Account
I sincerely hope Anonymous made copies of everything and are sifting through to find the juiciest bits.”
I hope the hackers send all of the contents internet viral before the Secret Service takes the hackers to a little, out of the way, prison cell. (Civil rights? What civil rights?) Then there is no way to hide the info – it’s on everyone’s computer!
NOW endorsing Obama/Biden is a bad look for McCain/Palin … I mean Palin/McCain.
I’m wondering if McCain is regretting this lil’ gamble otherwise known as the gift that keeps on giving.
Anyone watch McCain/Palin in Michigan today? How did it go? Badly, I hope
Lani: Was that her real email account? I’m so suspicious that the story will get “legs” and then be proven categorically false (i.e. the Repubs will succeed is making it seem like folks are on a w(b)itch hunt.
fixthebroken: I’m wondering how they did in Michigan as well. I can’t watch then “perform” live. I need cliff notes to keep my blood pressure down. I did see a clip of McCain reading cue cards … slowly.
Kudos to N.O.W.
The fact that they haven’t endorsed anyone in 24 years, and now endorse the ticket without the woman says alot about how they view the McCain/Palin politics as they apply to women.
On a side note, I spoke for an extended time today with a customer who was “on the fence” but leaning towards McCain. Oddly his reasons were simplistic (He’s a decorated Vet/POW and she’s cute. **gag**. Anyway…we talked about issues, things that mean something to him, his family, we compared notes about what I knew, and what he thought. A couple other people joined in, and by the end of the conversation, he was siding with Obama’s plan and told me he would continue to look into what both candidates were saying that pertained to his life.
Hope is alive and well and living here in Michigan!
Also just got a phone call from the head of the campain headquarters here in my town… He’s looking into getting me a “Bartenders for Barack” button. I love the thought of that!!
Dick (the name becomes him) Morris on Faux now..can’t stand him…would like to spit in his face if I met him.

bah!
@fixthebroken (16:04:10)
The little I got to watch (4 minutes or so)? SP was incoherent. I’ve said it above – incoherent is the only word I can come up with to sum it up
I am so psyched about N.O.W. supporting Obama-Biden. It makes absolute sense given Gov. Palin’s largely anti-people ‘executive’ experience. The more information we get from her record, the more it outrages me.
Hope is a five-letter word — O-B-A-M-A!
Mudflats on NPR!
Hey! Talk Of The Nation today, a columnist for the LA Times was chatting about her “political addiction” column and she said —not a direct quote here, but close—”There’s a blog called Mudflats that’s gaining a lot of attention and this guy is gonna get a book deal any day now”….HAAAAAA!
Sorry the writer thinks you’re a dude, nothing against dudes, but anyway….it was thrilling to hear the compliments about the ‘ol Mudflats work! You really are a great story. By the way, the topic on NPR was about people who are ready for a 12 step program because we, I mean…THEY….uh, we are addicted to everything Palin….and election….cable, radio, gossip, Washington Post, NY Times, blogs, Politico, Huffington, etc.
So, here I go: Hello, my name is Katie and I’m an Obamaholic. Not only am I using, …I’m dealing as well. Meet me on the corner for a great blog hit.
mudflats.wordpress.com!
Thanks for your very VERY fine work!
MissSue: This is good news that you were able to have a civilized discussion on the issues. I hope everyone votes SMART this year and not for beer buddies or lipstick wearing pigs … er … pitbulls.
My mother was able to have a similar discussion at her church. Without telling anyone how to vote, she was able to debunk a few myths about Obama (such as “he’s a radical Muslim”). She said that most folks were voting for Obama or leaning toward Obama, although they are pro life and generally vote for the candidate that represents their moral issue.
Ironically, most of what I’m hearing is a small backlash over the Palin pick. Methinks McCain is gonna suffer for this pick. Seemed cute and exciting at first … but now that the newness has worn off … it … well … it stinks.
@MissSue aka Barrel McRaven Palin (16:07:47)
It’s pretty much the only American news channel we get over here, so I watch it as a quasi reality show not news. CNN shows mostly world news. Bits of CBS in the dead of the night..
Sooo, I constantly swear at the TV to my husband’s consternation…”why do you watch it?”
On the plus side, I’ve become quite fond of Bill O’Reilly AND when i go out into the real world, nothing shocks/scares me as i’ve been through the POF (Prisoner Of FOx) experience.
Obama chants broke out and at least 5 of autoworkers were sporting Obama/Biden buttons and/or t-shirts as McCain toured and spoke at a Michigan assembly line plant.
A little more here
and here
@JenaGG – I don’t know the truth about the hacking. It does look like it could be real b/c it came from a talented group of hackers (Anonymous) and the SS is on the case. I’m withholding judgment about the truth of emails, but hope they are readily available to all and not ultimately hidden away. I’m going to google a bit for info about the AP refusing to turn over the emails – that is very interesting! Could it be that the media finally “grew a pair”?

@Andrea (15:32:47)
Now you’re being sexist, LOL
Fixthebroken asked:
Can anyone muster the gumption to watch Palin and McCain in Michigan right now?
don’t bother. I listen to XM POTUS all day. I’ve heard lots of McSame’s town hall meetings. He says the same thing at all of them ver batim.
And I realize why he likes town hall meetings…..no reporters.
everytime someone asks a question he just repeats his talking points.
The BIG thing missing from his speeches is the answer to ‘HOW’
Question: what will you do about education?
McSame: Choice and competition…vouchers to allow parents to send they’re kids to a school of their choice (what happens to the public schools they leave that I’m STILL paying taxes for?)
Question: what about energy?
Mcsame: Drill here and Drill now (what if the oil companies don’t want to drill?)
Nucular power…I want 45 plants in 15 years…the french do it and we like to be like the french (but where do we put the waste?)
then there’s the cliche’ jokes:
we paid 3 million dollars to study the DNA of bears…..I don’t know if that’s a criminal or a custody thing. (what about the 3 million to study the DNA of Alaskan Blue crabs?)
Mcsame has no answers and his issues only go 1/4″ deep.
And SP just totally scares the bejeezus out of me.
the one thing of the many others that bugs me the most is her policy of thinking it’s ok to hunt wolves from an airplane even to the point of offering a $150.00 bounty to anyone who turns in a front leg of a wolf (I shudder to picture her sitting behind a desk with a pile of bloody wolf legs in front of her.)
Lani aka Bash Budweiser (16:02:43)
I’ve seen what’s on wiki and there’s not much there.
It looks to be sufficient to prove that the account was hacked, but not enough to contain a smoking gun.
2 pictures, an index of emails, address book containing some Alaska.gov accounts, 5 screen shots including of an email one sent from Sarah’s account stating the account was hacked and the password reset.
So what is the current mood in Alaska regarding Palin? Still as
excited as they were at first? Just wondering, because she’s apparently reached
the last few seconds of her fifteen minutes of fame here in the lower 48.
bwilder: the buzzer sounded on her 15 minutes of fame when the economy tanked. People suddenly woke up from their Palin induced stupor.
JenaGG, drchill, it looks like the AP is backing the story & agrees w/drchill that there’s nothing very interesting in the emails. Apparently, there are 2 yahoo email addresses, and only one was hacked. Here’s the latest on the story:
Hackers break into Sarah Palin’s e-mail account
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iem-vu_mlRjRYfqkscEkw2ciRm7wD938OLM81
JenaGG – Sometimes when we become so passionate for a cause it becomes hard to have civil conversations. Because of my line of work, we have that rule that says “no politics or religion” while working. So I have to tread very carefully and honestly it really seems to be the best way. Although there are a few people I’d like to bonk over the head so they “get it”. lol.
From England aka Spoon Archer Palin (16:15:11) – I can see where watching that could steel you for what the outside world might think/say. I still give you a big pat on the back. I don’t know that I could watch it, even if it was the only option. I’m afraid I’d have thrown a shoe at the tv enough times to break it by now.
Bystander (16:16:40) :- Go GM employees. McCain should know better than to come to the auto industry with his two faces.
It’s working! Sharp decline in Palin’s favorability numbers:

When McCain finished his little speech at the GM plant, the GM employees were chanting “Obama 08″. Many of them had on Obama T-Shirts, buttons, stickers.
It was something to watch. It was on KO, you can see it again when he comes on later.
The e-mail story may have legs, but not in the way the repugs probably expected. Just reading the blogs on CNN, about 80% were saying things like Rove Plant, stupid to do business on Yahoo, what is she hiding, what are they scared of etc. The other 20% were the usual sheep bleating that it must have been Obama etc. etc.
hacked email
the screen shots of emails that they published, are sparse compared to what would have been available to the hackers. Its not clear if the hackers themselves are looking for a smoking gun among the emails that were not published on wikileak.
There is evidence that this account was used to email government accounts.
i believe they were bogus anyway. If you notice the email addresses are gov.palin, and gov.sarah….@yahoo.com, if you notice the “.”…yahoo accounts do not have the “.” in them. it would be govpalin…@yahoo.com
I haven’t listened to any of the politicians that much – I do a lot of reading and look into the issues and make my choices that way – but is Palin really incapable of completing a sentence? If her words were an English paper, it would be covered in red ink with the words “sentence fragments!” scribbled really large in the margin.
It isn’t that hard to speak well – my late grandmother could communicate extremely well, and she was the first generation of her family born in the US (both parents immigrated from Poland). It just takes some time and effort and a willingness to think … oh, wait a minute …
And this whole soap opera could have been avoided if McCain picked a smart, experienced woman as his running mate – but then she might think for herself and not have an empty head that Karl Rove could pour mush into. The Republicans wanted a blank slate, I guess.
I am not going to post email accounts but here is a taste of the email index…
the vast majority of emails were not disclosed on wikileak…

A link to send a letter to John McCain about the tactics the Republican’s are trying to use in Michigan.
http://colorofchange.org/michigan08/?id=1759-202929
Dear Senator John McCain and RNC Chairman Robert M. Duncan,
I just learned that Republicans in Michigan are planning to use foreclosure lists to keep struggling homeowners from voting, and I’m outraged. You stand to benefit from these practices and have been completely silent. This is simply unacceptable.
This strategy is cruel — kicking those hardest hit by the economy while they’re down — and it is also illegal. As the leaders of the Republican Party, you have a responsibility to stop these illegal voter suppression tactics in Michigan first, but also across the country.
I’m calling on you to publicly denounce the use of foreclosure lists as a basis for challenging voters and demand that local, state and national Republican party leaders forbid this illegal and shameful strategy.
Thanks for clearing that up raingods.
I was VERY excited to see NOW support Obama/Biden. To see that people can look past the obvious and think! It’s inspiring.
NOW actually called Palin the antithesis of a feminist! LOL! I was cheering loudly in my car when I heard this on NPR!
All of us need to ask ourselves, if Sarah Palin was a HE, would HE have been put on the Republican ticket. Think about it, with HIS extremist views, with HIS poor record on women’s rights, with a pending investigation into abuse of power, and all the other issues that Palin has, would you even CONSIDER voting for this person? I would be willing to bet what some of these women who DO support Palin are willing to “support” in a woman, they wouldn’t stand for in a man. That’s sexism all right, just not the kind everyone has been thinking about. I’m so glad that there are people out there reporting the truth!!!
The Hannity interview is bogus damage control for McCains poor judgement. There is no way he should skirt around the Troopergate issue. Sean has to ask are you guilty, he has to push, he has to or O”Reilly will look like a tenacious NFL pass rusher and Hannity will look like a over 40 league softball pitcher. Hannity has to demand to ask why she has so many different versions for one story. McCain/Palin will continue to pray for rain(or ask the Kenyan to pray over them)until they are assured it is a softball game and there is no contact.
AKM this is powerful! THANK YOU so much!
I wish everyone (especially in America) could read this blog before they go out and cast their vote in Nov.
Right on! We are not going back to the dark ages for any princess Sarah.
@bPoint (16:58:26)
Watching Hannity interview….hhhhuhhh (sigh)
Bogus! Shammity literally looks like he’s being “pleasured”
I just read the Kos pathetic liar story. Remarkable!
I was wondering how Palin will respond to the contradiction before I realized she won’t say anything about it. She will probably tell both stories again and again on the trail
AKM, you said it all in a nutshell.
What this powerful endorsement says is that regardless of the chromosomal makeup of the Republican ticket, they are simply wrong on the issues that matter most to women.
Thank you.

KO’s 8-point list of the variations to and attempted coverups of troopergate should be widely posted. I’m sure it isn’t news to Mudpups, but the last one alone should give people pause — three separate and internally contradictory reasons why Monahan is no longer in his previous position. The most recent — that he was fired for insubordination for seeking Federal funds to fight sexual assault is a real head-shaker. On a par with charging for rape kits. What kind of human being is Sarah Palin??? Never mind, she’s obviously totaly devoid of empathy. Or maybe there’s something in her past that makes her this way.
Way to stand up, Mudflats, and give the lower 48 a window into Alaska. Just hang onto your original voice and you will continue to be heard as an authentic observer.
Go get them Barry and Joe!

Someone asked above about what Alaskan women are thinking right now. Well, pretty much the same since we heard she’d been nominated, incredulous! Seriously, most of us wonder where that 80% favorability figure comes from. No one’s asked us. Here’s something I posted here a while back, but will put it in again since there are so many new readers lately: (It’s longish, and was written about 1 1/2 weeks ago, with a little updating.) By the way, many women in Fairbanks are talking about having a “Pro-Obama Rally” soon. We’re talking about having it near the library, like the one in Anchorage. I’ll post info when I have more details.
An Alaskan Woman’s Perspective on Sarah Palin
I am a fifty-five year old woman living in Fairbanks, Alaska. I wish to voice my strong disapproval of the choice of Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate. I expressed total disbelief when McCain selected her, as did most people in my life. Never in my wildest dreams had I considered her to be even remotely qualified to be our nation’s vice-president, much less our president should that ever be the unfortunate case. I have chosen to write down my thoughts and concerns and to share them with other voters in our state and nation. I want people to know what an Alaskan resident thinks about this choice and why. I have lived here for 30 years, and yes, my family enjoys many activities in the outdoors and in the wilderness. We own guns, we hunt, we fish,we enjoy moose burgers and caribou and salmon and halibut. We pick blueberries and cranberries and harvest gardens. We have sailed in Prince William Sound, the Gulf of Alaska and in Southeast Alaska. We have hiked and kayaked in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness areas. We are active citizens, always vote, have raised two children here, and are proud to live in Alaska. But Governor Palin would never be our choice for vice-president.
Yes, she was a mayor of a small town in Alaska with a small population of under 7000 during her tenure. She was elected with less than 700 total votes. Now she is the governor of our state which has less than 700,000 total residents, and has been so for only 18 months. She was elected with a total of 114,697 votes. Slightly over 239,000 people voted, the lowest voter turnout since 1990. You know, 17 cities in the U.S. have populations greater than the entire state of Alaska! Being Governor of Alaska is like being mayor of a U.S. city where only 239,000 people voted! She’s been learning about government in a small isolated town, and in a state with a small, and isolated population. A small population base makes for a small and often less selective candidate pool. Her experience from a national and world perspective truly is miniscule. It does not make her ready to be a major player on the world stage.
The more I have learned about this candidate since her selection, the more concerned I have become, both about what she is and what she isn’t. Many of my friends, both male and female, have echoed my concerns. Her characterization of her few government accomplishments is disingenuous to put it lightly. She has reaped the benefit of state coffers that are nicely in the black simply due to the state’s royalty share of oil profits. Outrageous world oil prices have given us a budget surplus, not policies from Sarah. She has not had to balance the budget or overcome deficits. She has actually increased our budget considerably. She has not cut our taxes. Alaska does not even have an income tax, nor state sales taxes. What taxes is she talking about? She was definitely for the “Bridge to No Where” until the very last minute and Alaska has kept the money allocated for that project. She has been an active supporter of other earmark funds as well. I am concerned about her national misrepresentation of herself.
During the last year and a half our state has been getting to know this new governor. Her relatively high approval rating (Many of us wonder where this approval rating comes from!) may well be due to the “honeymoon” effect of her short tenure to date. That “honeymoon” was starting to end, however, since even before this VP nomination. Questions had already been raised by Alaskans about Palin and her professionalism and judgment. Topics that were already newsworthy concerns even before this selection include: unprofessional and disrespectful talk show behavior, rocky relationships with other elected women in government, and actions against government employees based on personal vendettas. However, most people were still giving her the benefit of the doubt, or, having been so busy living and working, they had paid little serious attention to state government or to Sarah. Plus, of course, when state coffers are overflowing and both permanent fund and energy assistance checks are in the mail (totaling over $3000 per person), constituent approval is understandable.
I do not ever want to be for or against a candidate simply because of age, race, religion, or gender. I do not want to vote for a candidate simply because I can “relate” to him/her. I can relate to many of the parents of my children’s friends. I can relate to women who have been soccer moms, hockey moms, homework moms, PTA moms, orchestra moms,…… as I have been. I can relate to the women in my thirteen year old book group. I can relate to people who enjoy singing, and dancing, and music. I can relate to my coworkers and colleagues. I can relate to these people in my life, but I don’t want to select any of them as my vice-president or president simply because I can “relate” to them. So far Sarah has not let me know what she truly thinks and believes about important issues. During her speeches, she simply replays what she said at her convention speech. I can only assume that she wants my vote based on gender, her religious views, her less than honest portrayal of her accomplishments as small town mayor and governor of a state with a small population, and because she can deliver caustic jabs at her opponents.
Despite her assertion that she is for honest and transparent government, she is apparently not willing to be transparent as a vice-presidential nominee. She will not answer unscripted and serious queries by the press so that I can get to know more about her other than Alaskan issues and “scandals”, her family matters, as well as her views on God, abortion, sex education, contraception, global warming, gun control, and polar bears. I want her to answer legitimate questions about serious national issues so that I can learn why she believes she is prepared for this position. The Charles Gibson interview reinforced my worries as to her readiness for her nomination to national office. Despite stating that she was going to be upfront with the “Troopergate” investigation, lawyers engaged by the Republican National Committee are in Juneau, trying to block our legislature from its inquiry. Sarah has abdicated her promises of transparency to the Republican Party machine and now refuses to cooperate, because she must have something to hide.
I want any candidate I vote for to be one of the best thinkers and decision-makers our country has to offer. I want them to be someone who can be respectful, who can unify, who can consider all sides of an issue, who can listen, who can evaluate, who can learn from the past. I want a candidate who can be respected both from within our country and from without. I now know that Sarah went to five colleges and then graduated with a degree in journalism and a minor in political science. I would like to know more about her background as a serious student and a deep thinker. If her grades were good or if she participated in university level organizations, this would be one way for me to know about her intellect. I have not yet seen a release of her GPA and most colleges where she attended can’t remember much about her. I want to hear her speak intelligently and “off the cuff” on many issues before I know whether she has the intellect for national office.
So far, most of her comments and her demeanor in the national spotlight have been sarcastic and divisive. This is not what I want in a national leader. She has been praised for becoming McCain’s “pit bull” and talking tough. But you know, if she can talk tough, she needs to truly be tough. Why isn’t she talking to the press on her own? Why is she able to dish it out yet is afraid to take it? The fact that McCain’s campaign says she needs to get ready to talk to the press, that she needs to prepare, and that the press needs to treat her with “deference” only shows me that she’s not ready to be on the national stage on her own. This is not what I want in my vice-president or possible president. She needs to be ready to face some truly formidable characters in many different regions of the world, with very high stakes at risk. How can she be ready for those sorts of confrontations if she can’t even “face” her own country’s press? How can she say she is for transparency in government if she refuses to open herself up to the press? Whether or not she has been under scrutiny for her personal life, she can’t hide from the press. She accepted this scrutiny when she accepted the nomination. Believe me, even more intense scrutiny comes with the job, even more than when interviewing for the job. How can I continue to interview her for this job, which is what I believe a campaign is about, if she won’t even answer my questions via “the press”? If she is elected, will she also feel that she has no obligation to speak with the press? Scary thought. As a woman, I want a female candidate to believe in herself and to feel confident and comfortable talking to the press. She is letting the McCain campaign treat her as a “fragile flower” even as they use her as their “pitbull”. A strong and confident woman would insist on talking to the press for herself. If she can’t handle this scrutiny, or this pressure, what will she do in a national crisis?
The more I learn about Sarah Palin, the more I believe that she has not put “Country First” when she accepted this nomination. Sarah has not been honest about her accomplishments. She has not been realistic about her educational preparation. She has not been realistic or transparent about her knowledge and preparation for dealing with the national economy. She has not been realistic or transparent about her knowledge and preparation for dealing with world affairs. She is not ready to face her own country’s press much less world leaders and the world press. She is not prepared for this important national and world position and SHE SHOULD KNOW THIS! Is she flattered by the nomination and unable to see beyond her ego that she is unqualified? Is she complicit in realizing that she is not qualified yet is simply being used as bait for the religiously conservative fundamental and female votes? My conclusion is that Sarah is in this for Sarah. She’s willing to sell our country out for the glory of the nomination and for the chance at being a Republican window dressing. She won’t be getting my vote!
We must do everything we can to help elect Barack the next president of the USA. Please give anything you can. donate.

Great news about NOW! McSame had his pick of experienced, competent women for his VP choice, but he picked an empty vessel so his handlers could fill her with GOP nonsense.
Go Obama/Biden 08!!!
Calling me a Fundamental – is fundamentally sexist!
These craven miscreants will stop at nothing to besmirch themselves, their campaign, and our nation itself in their unbridled, unethical, and immoral pursuit of power!
I have had it!
And don’t call me a Fundamental either!
I am a person!
I reject and denounce being called a Fundamental.
I call on the mcShame campaign to apologize to Americans for calling them Fundamentals.

Now I don’t feel so bad about a few things, one of them being the fact that I am totally obsessed with this election stuff. My poor husband has become an Obama Widower. But I am not as obsessed as you all that willing to listen to the Hannity interview. Come on now, use that time to do something productive. You knew that he was not going to ask her real questions and that she would not be obliged to even pretend to give him real answers. Turn it off now! You really really don’t want that icky nonsense taking up brain space.
Hey all-this blog has been a lifeline! Thanks so much muds for keeping us all in the loop. I have not read all the comments here, so forgive me if i’m repeating something already known. I’ve had such a hard time figuring this woman out on one particular issue and that is the rape issue. Bad enough to not believe in abortion even in the case of rape or incest, but to charge a rape victim for their own crime victim kit? Why? I just couldn’t figure it out. Then i read it,,, and it makes perfect sense. Sarah Palin wants rape victims to pay for their own rape kits because they contain the morning after pill. This pill is considered the same as abortion by these religious freaks. Time to spread the word about this… haven’t we have enough of the religious right telling us what to do for the last 8 years? Remember Terri Schiavo! Thanks guys, you all keep me sane! I just wonder how i’m going to get any work done at the office between now and election day.
very well written…thanks for your insight

Do you find it difficult at times to talk to friends and neighbors about why you support Obama? This article has a couple of good ideas….

Thank you. The article has links to other sites and it gave me good, substantive information to provide when I call voters in swing states. Much appreciated link!

Someone asked above about what Alaskan women are thinking right now.
Thanks for the response. can you tell me why then her approval rate was so
high in Alaska? Is it still that high? She won the Gov. election pretty handily and that just makes me wonder WHY?
great post. thanks for blogging.
@ Bwilder
Very early on, in the first day or so after Palin was selected, someone in Alaska posted a comment that has stuck in my mind. She likened Sarah Palin to eye-candy and remarked that women generally figure her out before men do. She described a particularly Palinesque habit of stalling for time when faced with a tough question. A particular tilt of the head, batting of the eyes, an almost flirtatious reaction, while thinking of her response. I watched for it during the interview with Charrrrlieeee, but I didn’t notice it during the first segment, unless she’d been coached to replace it with that grating, drawn out name. I couldn’t bear to watch the other segments.
Anyway, the AK woman noted that once men actually figure they’ve been had, it must be sort of like that poor schlemeil in St. Paul who says he doesn’t remember anything after the drink until several hours later when he realized he’d been robbed of a substantial amount of valuables, not to mention his dignity. It may be that with the long Alaskan winters, it takes men up there a little longer to figure her out. And I don’t imagine the handout from the state helps speed up the awakening, either.
Wow, that seems to be the word I use everyday now, as I do my Mudflats review. I’m begining to read “it” 1st here more and more. I hadn’t hear that NOW was supporting Obama/Biden. That was unheard of a few years back, when we were all focused on getting any women in office, any how we could. Luckily it didn’t take NOW long to discover that not just anything that wore lipstick was going to support women’s personal freedom or advance our cause. Some women don’t have a clue but are learning as they make it up through the ranks. I hope I don’t sound like a old sour puss, but I do believe the choices are becoming very clear.
aka: Can Lightning Palin
AKM,
Do you realize just how large and how intelligent a community you have spawned? I am amazed at the discourse in both the posts and the comments. You are opening up the wonders of Alaska to those of us who have never experienced your state and have built a (pardon the pun) ‘bridge’ to the lower 48. The irony of this being on the back of the ‘Perils of Palin’ fiasco is not lost on me. You are also showing me that speaking truth to power generates strength and hope. Your blog community is very nurturing and getting stronger each day. To have 300 to 500 comments on each post is phenomenal! To quote GHWB, “stay the course”.
Nana From Alaska…..I tried to access the site to donate to AlaskaWolves and Obama. I couldn’t get there. My bad, I’m sure. But give me some other directions and I will gladly do so. Both great causes, and both seemingly life or death causes.
The long missive above from “fireweed” is great. Very true……..in short, I have lived in Anchorage 40 years and figure that the popularity rating could be due to the fact we have been a GOP state for so long; also, it does seem that the initial positive points of our gov fooled some of the people ~ she is quite charismatic ~ and no one knew the whole story until 3 weeks ago……except that she has made some enemies in the legislature (her way or the Alcan)…..
open and transparent? NOT!
AKM,
Thank you for this piece on the NOW endorsement …you articulate so eloquently the issues women care about, the issues all Americans who are paying attention care about. Thank you for giving such a public voice to the moral and personal outrage we are all feeling about McCain’s absurd and treasonous choice for VP. Like all other supporters who follow and comment on this blog, I am grateful to you.

NOW support is clearly support in the behalf of the people, all the people!
Now on with voting …..
Have sent this article to friends “back home” ….
I’m pretty sure everyone who reads this post has already seen the article, but just in case someone hasn’t
Democrats ask court to defend right to vote
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/17/uselections2008.democrats
I think this is the kind of activity that we are going to have to watch out for.
Have any of you over there had this kind of movement going on in your area?
If it is happening in other places, we should be forwarding the information over to team Obama.
Thank you Muckraker for giving us this place to come together.
AKA Stepper Choke Palin
Thank you AKM for continuing to bring all aspects of the story(ies) to light — I’m heartened by the NOW endorsement, was absolutely insulted by the GOP’s sexist pandering tactics! Had a great talk on the stoop last evening with 6 of our neighbors, convinced 2 to register to vote (yay), and encouraged the rest to turn off the TV, get on the internet, specifically this blog, and read the REAL deal about the issues. Thanks for the links to the Obama talking points, with the financial meltdown, and its economic implications particularly for us here in NYC, people are “getting it”!
[...] And as the brilliant Alaskan blogger AK Mukraker explains here: [...]
Lets face it. America is a nation that feels the need to kill things and liquidate others. Men , women and yes, lots of children. Does this bother most of the so-called “Christian elite” of America? Not in the least.
Should it? I’m sure Christ is bothered by it. But American’s that think they can glide on past him at the door with a Conservative wink and devil may care smile are now part of the Anti-Christ club, and don’t even know it.
Look at it this way. America’s freedoms are totally gone. Your voting system is a sham and so is your current President (who by the way, hasn’t even got the guts to face Americans and calm the heads of those who have and are about to lose everything you worked for), America now has turned the trailor trash shows into a modern real time survivor show. Man, you can’t even question as to why you can’t get yourselves to ask the right questions. ( possibly HAARP is working overtime)?
America , God is going to turn your blaspheming and scheming, money loving little anti-christs ways into your own hell and all you will have to show the world at just how smart able you think your peoples are is by making a cold-hearted redneck women who loves to kill wolves from helicopters and sleep with oil companies and an old man that calls George Bush a genius and probably wears depends undergarments.
Yeah, you’s is headed for higher ground alright.
Soon you will be left to fend for yourselves for a couple months, and when you are all done killing for food and water, then you will be saved by the New One World Government and the zionists will start killing-off all the Christians.
Katie @ 16:13ish… LOL! yep, it’s an addiction–which we can all promise to kick as of Nov 5! The imperative to keep at it now is too great. I continue to be truly amazed at the grassroots blogging energy building and demanding the truth get out there. Did you guys all catch Olbermann and Maddow tonight on MSNBC? I thought both were the strongest shows in some time, and Olbermann kicked some serious ass on laying out the Trouble with Troopergate this evening. (does anyone know how to embed those files in wordpress, by the way? dosn’t seem to work in Vodpod, and I can’t get the embed feature to work).
Carole, Team Obama is well aware of it. The team has been working the street from the beginning and is not taking its eyes off the situation, despite any new shiny things the GOP might dangle. There are also many voting rights organizations assembling teams of lawyers and law students to monitor the polling places. If the GOP tries (and it will) to steal the election, the Dems will not back down. Not this time.
The collapse of Wall Street, tho a horror to be sure, tells us that the Repub control is failing. No matter what it tries to do, it can no longer control the situation. Despite news blackouts of the devastation of Hurricane Ike, reports are coming through the internet. The Repubs cannot contain the situation any longer – word gets out.
Bush is hiding and will not address the public.
The only possible move left is some sort of terror threat, resulting in the internet being shut down for “our own protection”. i9/11, so to speak.
Obama/Biden, McCain/Palin, does it really matter? George Wallace said it best, “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between” Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, Patriot Act, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, Wikipedia and Facebook, warrant-less wiretapping and opening private mail. They are both guilty of treason.
Clean them all out and save this great nation.
Good for NOW.
And thanks for your work, AKM.
But I really do want to know this (and it’s not just the “Watergate girl” in me…it’s the American citizen):
WHAT IS SARAH PALIN HIDING? WHAT IS MCCAIN SO AFRAID OF? IS IT RELATED TO THE FIRST DUDE AND HIS ROLE IN OFFICIAL ALASKA STATE BUSINESS?
Thank you for renewing my hope. Your inspired and intelligent writing keeps many us going. I will now say to myself everyday: There is still time. This worried voter in Virginia needs to believe that.
Who wrote and sponsored the “Violence against Women Act?”
……
Nanook of the North?
John “I call my wife names in public” McCain ?
Todd “the First Dude” Palin ?
Sara “Moose-alini” Palin?
nope.
….
Joe Biden
That bloviating, backslapping ladies man, that’s who!
I will pass on a good idea sent to me by a friend:
Make a donation to Planned Parenthood. In Sarah Palin’s name. And here’s the good part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they’ll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. Here’s the
link to the Planned Parenthood website:
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/
You’ll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send the “in
Sarah Palin’s honor” card. I suggest you use the address for the McCain
campaign headquarters, which is:
McCain for President
1235 S. Clark Street
1st Floor
Arlington, VA 22202
Please Please Please let’s not have a women against Palin day. It gives her too much attention. Let’s have a national women FOR OBAMA day instead!
I live in a conservative area of TX….our mailman said he thought we were brave for having Obama bumper stickers. A friend of mine was verbally and physically assaulted because of her Obama bumper sticker. He called her an Obama loving c*nt. We have now taken that phrase and referred to ourselves as that now with pride . The good news is that a group of us have been volunteering and out getting people registered to vote. On the train the other day coming back from an Obama volunteer meeting a woman stopped me and asked about my Obama sticker. She said “did you come from a rally?” I said no I was volunteering and getting people registered to vote. She said “I work in a VERY conservative doctors office. Four years ago all of the doctors voted for Bush. I couldn’t keep my mouth shut and told them it was a mistake. Four more years of Bush would be detrimental. So this year with the election coming up I asked them all if I needed to say ‘I told you so’? and they said no you were right …all are now in agreement. Every single one of them are voting for Obama!”. It’s stories like this that keep me going! OBAMA ’08!
Lani … thank you for your post. I’ll sleep just a bit better. Your last line was not shocking unfortunately. What an age we live in. Keep up your good work.
Warmly, Carole

OBAMA/BIDEN 08!!!
I am just tickled that NOW has endorsed Obama/Biden! Let’s keep Obama and his family and Biden and his family in our sincere prayers for the difficult weeks ahead.
OBAMA/BIDEN 08′
Excellent piece! And excellent blog. I can imagine the temptation for some woman to vote McCain/Palin, but in my view Palin was simply a desperate attempt by McCain to revive a corpse of a campaign by choosing a radical woman. But choosing a woman because she is woman flies in the face of much of what woman have fought for: equality — neither preference nor diminished opportunity on the grounds of gender. It is fantastic woman’s groups like NOW have vocalized this.
yaa…now its the time vote with our brain not becuse we same as gen, ras, ideologies or event a couples…
