DON’T FORGET – Tune in to the Ed Schultz Show on KUDO 1080 AM, 8am-11am Alaska time, 12pm-3pm Eastern Time. Click HERE to listen in!
**************************************************************************************************************
It’s still amazing to me how the media have flocked to our fair city. One visit that I was particularly pleased with was progressive radio talk show icon Ed Schultz, bringing “Team Fargo” to the University ofAnchorage for a Town Hall meeting. Sarah Palin was the topic du jour. No need to say that was there? Nobody found us particularly interesting until this whole fiasco came up. Usually we have to resort to bribing famous people with fishing trips and tales of natural splendour. And they still don’t come.
I decided to splurge and get the VIP Passes at $100 a pop. But it made me feel good to shake the man’s hand, have some finger food, and donate to a worthy cause. And I needed something to eat after attending both the Palin rally and the anti-Palin rally earlier in the day. The VIP group of about 30 people were treated to a good progressive pep rally by our illustrious host, who, in another life, wanted to be a football coach. We’ll have none of that talk now. We need him right where he is.
The house wasn’t packed, but there was a respectable crowd, and everyone was more than willing to give opinions on the woman who might very well be sitting in the Oval Office some day. I’m sorry. I know that felt as strange to read as it did to write…but that’s what we’re dealing with.
Bottom Line: Do Alaskans think she’s prepared? No.
You can tune in to Ed’s Show to hear all about her stances on women’s issues, foreign policy, wildlife, the environment, her track record as mayor of Wasilla, special ed, family matters and troopergate. Rep. Les Gara who posted here on that last issue, gave a good recounting of his feelings about the McCain people running roughshod over a bipartisan investigation, and slandering some really well-respected public servants in the process. The crowd got a little frustrated when he refused to talk about the possibility of impeachment, but that word can’t be bandied around without bringing down the wrath of the Republican ticket and it’s squadron of lawyers and spin-meisters.
Click HERE for the Ed Schultz Show website. And thanks to KUDO 1080, Alaska’s progressive talk station for making it happen.

Love your blog! Very interesting and imformative.
AKM. please dont take this the wrong way, but I love you. Your site gives me hope that your bible thumpin, gun totin gov will be knocked out of the box with McShame in November.
Poodle has started the ” Bridge ” lie again…………..
AKM, you are the first site I go to everyday since this mess started and I found this blog. Thank you for all your hard work!!
ED is on Air America in NYC
1600 am
Ed gets spots on Hardball fairly often.
It still feels like the MSM needs to pick up on this (which they are doing), because left wing radio can be dismissed by the right just as right wing radio gets dismissed by the left, and I suppose many in the middle figure “a pox on both their houses.” I appreciate that facts are sourced here.
Tom Friedman, who is fairly well respected by the middle, has a great column today, in which he says that shouting “drill, baby, drill,” is like shouting “typewriters, baby, typewriters” at the beginning of the P.C. era.

I’m curious about the use of taxpayer resources (SP’s staff) to take care of her baby. (This got Jane Swift in trouble in Massachusetts)
Thank you mudflats. Thank you ten wonderful women who got this going despite threats (yes, threats) from opponents on the right. And thank you all you wonderful demonstrators who walked with me in front of the library yesterday. It was a truly uplifting experience. BTW, one person actually went around with a clicker counting everyone. At the time of the count, there were 1496 protesters and 93 Palin supporters.
Now to business: We have work to do in the next 2 months.
1. I would love these rallies to go viral. This one started a week ago with 10 women over coffee and grew to a huge rally. All you out in the battleground states can you do the same? Non-battleground states, too. I have heard some hints of this on the blogs, but would love to see it spread across the land. Get involved. If you are a loser at organizing (as I am) look for someone else’s and join it.
2. Write to newspapers all over the place. My local paper has a once per month policy that I’ve already used up so I am writing to newspapers all over the battleground states. The nice part about this is that you can write one really good letter and send it hundreds of places with cut and paste. Google a state name and the word newspapers and one of the first links is a list of all the papers in the state and their web sites.
3. Contribute what you can. This is too important to hold back. Alaska is awash in money from royalties from these obscene oil prices. The legislature has seen fit to give Alaskans a $1200 “energy rebate”. Mine is going to the Obama campaign. I’ll be adding some more of my own money, too. Every dollar helps.
4. Find your local Obama or Democratic Party office and ask them how you can help out. I am volunteering time when I can. They can all use your help in a number of ways. If anything puts us over the top it will be this army of Obama volunteers.
Please, please, please do what you can. Our country is in serious trouble and needs your help.

Thank you all from Eagle River, Alaska
It makes me sick that McCain is up in the polls. I’m losing faith in America. I just read on the Huffington Post that the misleading ads that McCain is airing are actually working.
I’ve been compiling a running list of links to help all of us use as ammunition to help convert undecided voters.

Questions about Palin’s legal residence:
( I don’t know the answers, and would like to know, because this is relevant to her taking a per diem when in Wasilla).
Where were her children’s official residences when she was in Juneau?
Did her residence change when her children were enrolled in Wasilla schools vs Juneau schools?
If not, where were they officially residing, and with whom?
AKM thank you once again. I am listening to David Bender on Air America. Some body just phoned in an interesting thing. He stated, as I did a few days ago, that due to her religious beliefs, she CANNOT make decisions. Her husband is the God Head and as such is the “decider”
The fact that Todd was cc’d on government emails. So does this mean Mr. snowmachine would be the veep? This is all so sickening.
Now they are discussing the polls and the tricks they use with voters and the fear tactics like throwing around jail etc.
I thought you guys lived in a free country?
Joe:
Iligitimum Non Carborundum : It’s very hard. For starters, why do you all put up with a “one letter per month” policy from your local paper? I’d start a campaign to read it online, or – if it’s not online – read it at the library (if they haven’t done away with libraries up there – I kid, I kid)

RW…:Planned Parenthood has an ad coming out this week that will shame the McCain and palin ticket. It will leave no doubt as to McCains lies and the crap that is in his senile mind.
Laurie – Thank goodness. We need to start educating people about these lies!
However… I feel that the more we talk about abortion in the ads, the more divided we become. I want Obama to talk about what he said at the convention. “Certainly we can all agree that we want to stop unwanted pregnancies in the first place”
Hopefully planned parenthood won’t focus on the abortion issue.
This is a very good article on how the world feels about Obama:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/sep/10/uselections2008.barackobama
…and this is part of a comment on the above article. Obama can make this happen!
“I remember a US that cared about justice, truth and honour. There was a time when many non-Americans looked to the US to see those ideals in action, ideals that inspired societies everywhere. It sounds incredible now, at the end of 8 years of lies, war crimes and torture, but I remember the US that set absolute standards of human decency, a US that gave us the UN and the Geneva Convention. Now I’m glad to see Russia flexing its muscles because a second bully in the school yard will keep some check on the first bully.
The world is waiting, hardly daring to hope, that the US voters will give us back the honourable decent USA that has been stolen from us. “
thanks to whoever posted this: a good thought to hold on to at the end.

I refuse to get scared because of what Republicans might do and are doing. We know what Republicans might do. They’ve done it for years. When you react to what they do, when you get concerned, you play their game. And when you play their game, you lose. I intend to play my game. And in my game – issues, judgment, vibrancy, decency, ability and outraged anger at eight years of supporting divisive, disastrous policies trump everything, most especially empty pandering. And that game is a winner.
@JoeAlvord
I’m right there with you- I’ve donated my entire rebate check as well, to several causes (one is Obama/Biden). Maybe if we talk about this more, people will follow suit…

How can this be? It has been debunked time and time again! I guess they are expecting that most are ill-informed and will buy it.
But what about all those who were told that she kept th $220 million? Don’t you think that her continuing to claim, “thanks, but no thanks” will hurt her credibility? I would think so. But after reading a conservative blog that noted Time’s interviews of women in Michigan…I don’t have a lot of confidence.
One woman said she had decided to vote for Obama. Then Palin came along and she’s voting McCain. When asked what policies she liked of Palin’s, she replied, “I don’t really know the policies…I just like her.”
We are in trouble. I am ashamed of the ignorance of many of my sex.
RW…the ad will not be about abortion…its complete putdown of the ad McCain put on regarding sex education for kinders
Is it just me- every time I hear or see “Drill Baby Drill”……….I have a visual of Bristol holding Trig……..call me sick……..I’m just sayin……….

Obama by his very nature is calm cool and collected. I trust him to know what he needs to do. He has driven the largest ground movement in modern history. He mobilized a group of people that have been very hard to reach.
I believe that the youth vote will be out in numbers that the republicans underestimated badly.

Congratulations, Alaska! We texans are so thrilled to hear (and see) that you also do not believe in her 100%. She is coming here 10/3 and we are starting to organize a rally for that day in Dallas. Not all texans are backwards and love Bush. The important thing is to hope people will vote for a black man…in the south, that is not so easy. It is important to remind people it is NOT ok to vote for someone “folksy”, but someone a heckuva lot smarter than your average citizen.
Keep up the rallies.

[[It makes me sick that McCain is up in the polls.]]
Do not believe the polls. None of the polling groups give enough information to demonstrate that they were conducted properly, the statistics methods used appropriately, and the analysis credible given the results of the statistics.
People CONTRACT to have these polls done. They have control of what, if anything, is released. What we don’t know is how much control they have over other aspects of the poll, including the questions asked, the order in which they are asked, whether registered or likely voters are chosen, and if any hinky polling tactics (and there are many) were used in the process.
The most important polling issue in this election is the fact that most polling groups don’t spend the extra funding to include a representative number of cell phones in their phone polls. The majority of young voters are supporting Obama, the majority of young people don’t have land lines (cell phones as their primary phone contact), so any polls that do not include a representative number of cell phone contacts will give grossly low numbers for Obama.
Remember that, as TV pundits can be biased, so can polling groups, including all of the little minions that actually do the polling process, statistics analysis.
Anyone who has taken a statistics course will tell you that it is VERY easy to manipulate statistics to give the opinion you want.
National Council on Public Polls: 20 Questions A Journalist Should Ask About Poll Results (http://www.ncpp.org/?q=node/4) is a good place to start in understanding what information whould be provided from polling groups if they want us to believe their polling methods and results are valid. But that is just a starting point because it is very easy to catch news outlets (like CNN) in using fraudulent methods to predict an outcome that is not justified by the polling studies done.
Thank you, AKMR!
Speaking of wildlife, there is a LOT of buzz — everywhere — and curiosity about Palin’s position and policy on aerial wolf hunting. Would you be so kind as to do a post on this to explain it to those of us outside of Alaska? Some of us are trying to get the facts, but the water is being muddied by pro-hunting Alaskans and I’m not sure that this is accurate. Thanks!
[[A % of the profits go to the Obama campaign. ]]
What “%” goes to the Obama campaign? Is that gross or net?
I think 100% of the T-shirts purchased through the Obama campaign go to the Obama campaign.
Lemonfair: you’re got a good point. I kind of wondred when I saw those photo op shots of Sarah’s babyswing in the gov office, if all the rest of the women in AK got to take their babies to work, and does the state pay for it? I know lots of women in the lower 48 that would like to take their babies to work and are not allowed to because they don’t have back-up childcare in their offices or workplaces.
Have you noticed how many women are being asked to leave their babies and children to serve in the armforces: Now that’s just one work force where child care is not supplied to government workers. Perhaps she now is willing to be for it hafger she was against it. Do you suppose he might be willing to support paying for childcare for women to work, if it is discoverd that she already is billing the state for her childcare? In which case, can the rest of the women in America now start billing the state.
Would sure be nice to see how much she pays and to who? Then start comparing how much other women pay.
Next question, now I’m an equal opportunity employer advocate, but I also know that some people men or women are better suited to do certain things in their lives at certain times for instance nursing mothers usually do that better than men. As for taking on the job of Commander-in-Chief, do you suppose the leaders from the axis-of-evil countries are going to give her a pass because she is a nursing mother? I get it that we haven’t sent any of our Commander-in-Chief’s out to actually stand up in front of the troops in the front line for years now, perhaps they wouldn’t get us in so many of these situations if we did, but that being a side issue what is this country coming to if it’s willing to put nursing women in that position? At least let the baby learn to walk so it can run under the table, before you tell Russia you’d go after them if you have to….oh, I forgot she will never have too, that would be her son and other peoples sons.

@Intrigued (15:27:15) :
Here is one article from 2007 from the Anchorage Daily News on Palin and aerial hunting:
http://dwb.adn.com/news/alaska/wildlife/story/8726730p-8628810c.html
Just a very sincere thanks for all the info. Now I really am going to bed.
I’m hearing lots of thing, including interviews with the pollsters, that suggest that none of the polling companies know what is going on now. The old methodologies aren’t really accurate any more and the new methologogies might be even worse.
This is not terribly helpful if you really want to know what’s going on but keep in mind that some of the polls done during the primary were way off.
There’s also so many organizations getting into the business that the polls are moving in every direction you can imagine. I noticed one political web site manager thought a particular poll (Zogby interactive) was so inaccurate he heavily discounted it. But if you think the poll is wrong, why include it at all?
Perhaps Palin’s “mission” might have to be looked at in terms of the EndTime believers (which I know almost nothing about except our fears about more war in the Middle East seems to be their fantasy). In doing a little google research, I found this site: http://www.tribulation.com/
Does anyone else see Palin riding the beasts of Babylon? http://www.tribulation.com/woman.htm
“The Harlot riding the Beast represents Religious Babylon. She is portrayed as a “harlot” or a “prostitute” because she commits spiritual fornication with the kings or leaders of the world. This would be interpreted that she left her First Love, i.e., preaching the Reconciliation to God in Christ, pursuing instead pure monetary and political gain. Her primary purpose is to gain power over the Saints of God (and even non-believers) by any means possible.
She is identified as a “CITY” {WASILLA?} (not a nation or country)…
is heavily adorned with gold and jewels,
that:
1) has a Christian religious heritage,
2) is waxed exceedingly rich,
3) has the blood of Saints and Martyrs on her hands,
4) has tremendous religious influence throughout the world,
5) is clothed in purple and scarlet,
6) is located near the Mediterranean Sea {some things we can’t take literally},
7) is full of abominations, primarily idols,
9) is primarily represented by a woman instead of Jesus Christ,
10) is carrying a golden chalice, significant to her identity,
11) influences world political leaders because of her religious power,
12) sits on seven mountains or hills.
PALIN’S CONFIDENCE SEEMS SO UNNATURAL CONSIDERING HER LEVEL OF COMPETANCE THAT I KEEP WONDERING WHAT SHE BELIEVES IS HER TRUE ROLE – WHICH MAY BE OUTSIDE THE REALM OF SANITY.
TROLL
Can someone tell me how, when I followed Chuck Norton, my personal email showed up on the reply to post, as it does here? Is that supposed to be right?
Speaking of polls, this is recently posted on fivethirtyeight.com:
“Overall, the landscape has not changed very much since the Republican convention – we’re just collecting different evidence about where the bounce might or might not be in different states. Arguably, however, there are a few signs that McCain is beginning to come off his peaks. Between the four national tracking polls, McCain now leads by an average of just 0.25 points, his smallest margin since the convention.”
Just took a look at the ad Chuck linked to. Sometimes it’s so scary how we all seem to be preaching to the choir. That supposedly “most effective” ad will only resonate with McCain supporters, b/c in addition to it’s simplistic portrayal of Obama’s positions, it’s so obvious that his selection of Palin was putting politics, not country first. By the same token, on this wonderful blog, we pretty much all agree.
Which is why what happened in Anchorage yesterday was so great, b/c as evidenced by the Alaska women’s rally, the people who know Palin best are NOT unanimous in their support. Even some who voted for Palin for governor do not support her as VP.
I think Ed Schultz reaches a lot of independents, so hopefully he’ll take that Alaskan message to the rest of the country, to people who are undecided, who remember that once upon a time, McCain did put country first, and therefore still want to give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m honestly sad, b/c it’s so obvious McCain is not that person any more, and our only hope is to move in a new direction.
In the long run, I believe the selection of Palin will be seen as the cynical, divisive, move that it was, and we will move forward with an Obama administration. But when McCain loses, and Obama wins, we still need to bring this country together. I think Obama can and will do this, but as Laurie said – patience and steel

Another reason to give for an Obama vote:
Although not widely reported in OUR MSM (luckily the rest of the world, including Israel, DOES report world events), some info you may not be aware of: Israel first asked Bush in May to bomb Iran, Bush refused. They then asked for bunker busting bombs and permission to use Iraq air space so they could bomb Iran. Bush initally refused. He changed his mind and sold them bombs on Friday per Haaretz (Major Israeli newspaper).
Although there is no guarantee that Obama will lead with a more fair foreign policy, it is certain that McCain, and especially Palin if she assumes the Presidency, will continue the uneccessary and dangerous continuation of expensive wars that may lead to WWIII.
Watch this to be informed. Lots of people interviewed that you will recognise including Richard Perle. A Dutch documentary, narration in Dutch with subtitles but the doc is in English. AIPAC (focus of the doc) does not feel reassured by Obama. That in itself makes me trust Obama.
Note, when the campaign kept everyone away from Palin before she went back to Alaska…there was one EXCEPTION. You got it….AIPAC met with her in her hotel room. Widely reported in newspapers…google it.
Lila–
Oh, No! She does that, too?
Polls mean nothing – it is just a tool to get us accustomed to the thought of another stolen election. If the pollsters say the race is close it is a lot easier to pull off.
Polls cannot contact anyone with a cell phone – there are a ton of people who no longer have land lines.
WCCO tv in Mpls/st. paul just did a little poll of their own and 68& of the 2000 people they contacted said they didn’t think that palin was ready to lead. So, there you go.
The important thing now is to make sure that we all get out and vote and be sure to off er rides to friends and neighbors.
Yes we can!

From the washingtonpost.com:
Rove: McCain Has Gone ‘One Step Too Far’
By Robert Barnes
LOUDON, N.H. — The Obama campaign was pleased today to introduce a new ally: Karl Rove.
Well, maybe that goes a bit far, and its manner of introduction was not exactly one President Bush’s top political strategist might have chosen for himself.
Nonetheless, the campaign seized on Rove’s comments on Fox News Sunday today to bolster its case that Republican presidential nominee John McCain has been lying about Obama’s record in recent days. The Obama campaign has specifically decried two McCain ads: one that attempts to portray as an insult to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Obama’s contention that McCain’s calls for change are putting “lipstick on a pig,” and another Obama says misleads viewers about the purpose of a sex eduction bill he supported.
In response to a question, Rove said McCain “has similarly gone one step too far, attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100 percent truth test.”
@ intrigued. Here is a Q&A explaining Alaska aerial hunting from Defenders of Wildlife.

Redwoodman, Thanks for the link.
This whole subject sickens me. There MUST be another way — in fact, I read that a few years ago sterilization and male relocation was used successfully. Why was that method abandoned? It certainly is more humane. I guess that is boring compared with the thrill for the hunters … or maybe it’s the bounty.
I had not been to the Alaskan site linked to below before today. Good info on SP’s stance on many things:

The Ed Schultz Show is on at 08:00 am until 11:00.
I would hate to have someone tune in an miss it.

I hope the message gets out to the states that this woman is a complete farce.
Thank you No More.
This practice is soooo cruel; I can’t believe that more Alaskans aren’t outraged. I can’t stop crying. …
Years ago, Farley Mowat wrote a book called “Never Cry Wolf.” Among other things, his claim was that wolves help caribou and other herds by culling sick and aged animals, leaving more food for healthy members. The wolves were usually not fast enough to catch the fittest animals. Hunters, however, use airplanes and other unfair advantages to kill the fittest members of the herd, often just cutting off the head or antlers as trophies and leaving the rest behind.
If you believe Mowat, there is absolutely no reason to cull wolves. He dismisses the same arguments that Palin seems to be making now as pure hunter propaganda with no basis in scientific fact.

are you over here now? where in Kansas… haven’t found many heck any Kansasans on this list!
Many of my lefty blogger friends agree that Palin has jumped the shark. Does she have anything new & positive to offer from here on out? Nope. Just more news emerging about who she is and what McLame has tried to pull over on us. I heard of one republican woman switching to support Obama just today. And more will follow. Their base was understandably energized by putting a woman on the ticket… sadly, these women thought that finally their party (the GOP) had started respecting women. Now they are finding out that this was a ploy to get their vote and they are getting ANGRY.
I think at this point, all Obama’s campaign has to do is point out that McLame/Palin = Bush.
Not hard to do. Start with their positions on The Bush Doctrine that practically defines Bush’s administration. Obama is against it, McLAME is FOR IT. Palin obviously didn’t know what it was. IF McLame doesn’t switch his position, he’ll look like a bush clone. If he does, then he’s a wimp and a flip flopper.
spoke with a Grand Canyon wolf relocation effort here in Arizona yesterday. he said that beefing up the caribou population helps the hunting tourism business in Alaska, and shooting the wolves helps the caribou population to increase. (plus, i’m thinking, offers another form of “hunting” – if you can call it that)
@Helen Wheels
Now that is a post I will read and read. I too believe that palin will start to lose her lustre. People…even rebublican woman will see that she was used to pander to them. Dem women who gave her a look will regain their senses.
SNL even though it is spoof…there is always an aspect of truth in it….and Tina Fey nailed Palin. Hopefully people with see that when you get past the pretty face…the gawdawful voice..there is nothing underneath.
So the cc’ing of the first dood needs to be explored. If he was included in Federal matters, like oil/natural gas money that is a serious breech of NATIONAL security. You know how much she loves to point out that energy is the most important thing in national security. What exactly does he do in oil? Seriously this could be WAY BIGGER than troopergate if someone looked into it

The link is very informative, thank you. The problem is this: the bloodthirsty &%#ards take a look at that link and say YEAH!
The bumper sticker descriptions of Sarah are exactly WHY people love her!
Most people don’t want to think about what it means to pay bounty on a wolf’s legs, they just want the money! Someone here posted about what the office might look like where you turn those legs in…bloody, hairy, stained paperwork…and where do they put the legs after the bounty is paid? Who carts them away, incinerates them. etc.
Typically, we don’t want to think about the “logical conclusion” of selections or decisions we make…and we have to start doing that.
ok folks: lamer IT question here– when the link pops up as the title of an entry, its been linked on another site? ?

JUST A LITTTLE OFF TOPIC BUT INTERESTING READ ANYWAY:
THE APPLE NEVER FALLS FAR FROM THE TREE-CINDY MCCAIN
Jim Hensley and his older brother Eugene first began working in the liquor distribution business before World War II, being in the employ of Kemper Marley, Sr., an Arizona rancher who had become wealthy in the liquor distribution business in Phoenix and Tucson following the end of Prohibition.
Following his discharge in 1945, Hensley and his brother went back to work for Marley in his United Sales Company in Phoenix and United Distributors in Tucson. In 1948, both brothers were prosecuted by the federal government and convicted of falsifying liquor records to conceal illegal distribution of whiskey against post-war rationing regulations. Jim Hensley received a six-month suspended sentence while his brother received a year in federal prison. In 1953, Jim Hensley and Marley were charged by federal prosecutors with falsifying liquor records. Defended by future Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, they were acquitted.

I think a lot of these women who are “identifying” with Palin need to reconsider. They may think of her as a kindred because they too have to juggle work and motherhood, but they don’t get to take their kids to the office.
Cynthia Tucker (Atlanta Journal Constitution editorial page editor) was saying on Chris Matthews’ show today that she’s heard from a lot of professional women who are afraid their bosses will now expect them to make the same choice Sarah Palin has made, at a time when many professional women have been deciding that “having it all” means working fewer hours so they can be with their children more.

Slightly off-topic, so I apologize, but the SNL skit last night was not just hysterical (Way to Go Tina and Amy), but spot on as well. Just found this site. Fascinating. Nice to see that all 11 of you are preaching to your choir. Question… if Palin is hated by so many Alaskans, why does she have an “80-something” approval rating?
Never realized there was a People’s Republic of Alaska. Glad you Communists all live so close to Kamchatka. the one-way tickets we’ll be offering to most of you after Nov4 won’t cost as much.
JJ- I should have said that article talks about how Jim Hensley got his money.

AKM – just saw this thing in the WSJ that some of the witnesses that were subpoenaed have agreed to testify:
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/09/14/troopergate-subpoena-showdown-may-be-averted/
Two of the witnesses named Friday confirmed that they would cooperate.
On Sunday, Annette Kreitzer, Gov. Palin’s Commissioner of Administration, said in a telephone interview that she has agreed to testify, probably as soon as this coming week. “My understanding [is] it’s not just me, but everyone,” Ms. Kreitzer said, clarifying that by “everyone” she meant the four witnesses who worked directly in her unit at the Department of Administration.

I’m just curious how old some of the commenters are. Sometimes I feel like this kind of activism is more appropriate for idealistic college kids – and at my age I should be more cynical than to think that one politician should be any different than another – but yet I do.
I’m 38 – anyone else want to spill the beans?
@ Catherine: I’m almost old enough to be your Mom. Beyond that, my mother told me that any woman who tells her age is liable to tell anything.

RE: “However… I feel that the more we talk about abortion in the ads, the more divided we become.”
Having been at you tube for the last few hours watching the wolf thread, I can tell you abortion is what is is breaking down to in that thread.
And remember – don’t feed the trolls!
I haven’t commented on the site yet, but I’ve been an avid reader of this site since I discovered it a week ago. I’m 45.
57…:)
@ ds55: But despite a few gray hairs, no one thinks I look that old! So, I don’t mind so much spilling the beans because I get compliments for aging so well.
AKM – my turn to rave and say thank you! I never post or leave comments, but you have inspired me! I have been reading your posts for the last two weeks. I was in search of more information when McCain picked Palin and have been addicted ever since. Everytime I get that awful pit in my stomach (while watching msm – even some of my favorite cable shows) I know I can come here and feel better and be hopeful again. It’s great to see your stories getting out there. I hope it helps to change the conversation going on in the media. It’s crazy to me that the republicans can get away with such lies. Thank you!!!!
Catherine, I’m 24.
Cool … I have only younger brothers and sisters, so it’s neat being one of the “kids” around the site. I don’t get that very often.
I am just as addicted to this site now as I was last week. I keep thinking it will resolve. Regarding Palin coming home after losing the election: I feel confident that she will be at the least censured – the evidence is clear that she is lying repetitively and frankly the state is being harmed in ways that are not yet apparent. Impeachment – that would be cool. Hi to everyone from the politics page of Huffington Post!! (5 seconds of fame)

Google Palin TransCanada Pipeline. You should be able to find tons of info, including that no ground has been broken and nothing will flow for at least 10 years, if it’s constructed. If not, the company is due $500 million.
So, when she and McCain say she negotiated a deal for $40 billion, consider what it will cost. Moreover, TransCanada gives a different estimate. Anywhere from $26 billion to $31 billion. Apparently, she can’t do numbers.
Catherine – Practical, hopeful 46-year-old woman. Can’t be duped by Republican offer of a candidate with whom I share hormones. I need to share more than that to cast a vote. I don’t share skin color with Obama, but we share the same economic, foreign policy, social priorites vision for America.
I was a Hillary supporter. When she lost, I took a close look at McCain. What I saw is not the vision I seek.

It makes me sick that McCain is up in the polls. I’m losing faith in America. I just read on the Huffington Post that the misleading ads that McCain is airing are actually working.
I’ve been compiling a running list of links to help all of us use as ammunition to help convert undecided voters.
You might want to wean yourself from Huffington Post. They are starting to look like Politico. They run so many misleading headlines and skewed articles, I gave up on them.
And don’t despair about the polls. They are being cooked by the polling outfits who are now polling equal number of Democrats as Republicans. We all know there are way more registered Democrats than Republicans in this country. And then there’s the inconvenient truth of cell phone users and the millions of newly registered voters.
Don’t despair, but don’t get complacent. I’m glad that the polls and MSM are trying to make it look like a horse race. That will motivate more Obama supporters and motivate the new registered voters to actually vote.
Catherine – I’m closer to Hillary in age than to Obama. Closer to both of them in philosophy than to the McCrank/Pain group.

I keep think there should be some kinda “morning After pill” just in case this whole thing goes bad. Those who voted McCain/Palen will wake up the day after the election and realize Palen is completely out of the picture and all they have is the MCCain they didn’t want 6 months ago. Time for the pill!

Just took a look at the link you provided. He released his record for the last 8 years. I didn’t realize reporters were only given 3 hours to look at them.
For me, not a big issue. The man is old. We know that. Melanoma. We know that. Smoker is his youth. We know that. I can’t see that he could have more issues or that more issues would change the fact that it is a risk to elect a man at his age, with his past health issues and his views for America.
Personally, I think he suffers with mental issues, which I’m not poking fun at. I don’t know how he could endure what he did without sustaining mental scars. I just don’t want to deal with the scar tissue, so to speak.
Question for this esteemed group of thinkers: Should the Obama campaign have already made a commercial of Palin totally botching the “Bush doctrine” question?
I for one, think they should nail her on it and run it over and over in all the toss-up states.
Obama might get a boost tomorrow with the implosion of financial markets. Lehman Bros is filing for bankruptcy, dollar is getting beaten up around the world.

We are watching people realize who Palin really is this weekend. The MSM (finally) is cooperating.
By next week, she won’t be the darling she was a few days ago. Information has a way of getting out when you have 1000’s of relentless bloggers on the case. The MSM might be horribly biased but they don’t like to be scooped.

Hillary has been rallying with Obama in Ohio and I am sure that she has said something……The press hasn’t picked it up yet and so I will wait until Obama wishes to reveal it.
Ignore the polls. Just more public perception manipulation, like msm, et al. Obama has the smartest team on the ground, and the current media crush on Pain is ending. You can see it as the polls shrink McCrank’s “lead” and the articles about his running mate turn into exposes of her abuse of power.
I, too, felt the shock of “NO, Not Again!” It looked like the election had been decided. I remember that sinking feeling when the press turned against Gore & Kerry. But we do not back down, we do not stop. Never, ever again!
I’m from the age that said good-by to high school and college classmates as they were shipped off to Vietnam. So when the rethugs openly talked about bombing Iran and war with Russia, my first thought was to send my child overseas as the rethugs will need to draft for cannon fodder. But – NO! They can’t have him, and they can’t have the White House!

Ever have a thought and then read something at the same time that was the same thought, only better formulated? I’ve often thought that this election, in particular, is about Yin-Yang, Dragon-Phoenix, if you will. Today I was reading a book I just bought, ‘The Little Earth Book,’ by the green entrepreneur /activist James Bruges, who is British but has done a lot of work in India, too. The book is about how human life on Earth needs to become sustainable or perish. Tons of good information from all levels of society, countries, and enterprises. Anyway, in the introduction he says:
‘The United States is dominated by a belief in growth, competition, control, confrontation and all the male yang qualities. But a quarter of its citizens can now be described as ‘cultural creatives’ with concerned, caring, cooperative, responsible, holistic, female yin qualities. It is these Americans who appreciate diversity of culture, who are dreaming up new ways of doing business, new technologies, new management styles and new forms of social organization–creating the potential once again for a New World. The cultural creatives have inherited the qualities of the Founders of this great nation. Let us hope the planet gives us time to redress the yin-yang balance and allow world affairs to move toward justice and sanity.’ (Page
This really validated my thoughts and made me realize the degree to which the world is watching and needs the US to follow a new path, because so much flows from that.
He also says: ‘Above all, we could return to the United States’ unique constitution and to the ideals of its Founders who struggled against corporate tyranny and resolved that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.
But change must be radical. If the scale of remedial action fails to match the scale of the crises, we face catastrophe.’ (Also page
You can debate that last point, but it’s food for thought. Are we at a political-cultural-social tipping point, the results of which will either be advanced or slightly delayed by the outcome of this election? Thoughts?

Sorry, page eight both times, didn’t mean to put smilies.
i think everyone should go to Oprah.com and email Oprah to get on the stick and start DOING something more to promote Obama to her audience. There is a group out of Florida (GOP) who are boycotting her show and mag (not that that will make one bit of diff to Oprah) – but she could be doing two mins at the end of every show talking to her audience about the issues and driving home the point that BO is the change we NEED. http://www.oprah.com
if enough people write her, maybe she’ll become more proactive.

Just watching ‘Sarah Palin Revealed’ on CNN. In telling the story about her marriage, turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I wasn’t previously aware, but Sarah and Todd had their first child 8 months after they ’surprised’ everyone by ‘eloping’. I’m no mathematician, or doctor, but the timelines just don’t quite add up.

As much as I dislike Palin’s stand on just about everything, I believe that it would be in Obama’s best interest to keep the commercials aimed at McCain. Time to take the spotlight off of SP and put it where it belongs; on the man without a stand on anything. It’s time McCain stopped hiding behind SP’s skirt.

I’m sorry that President Obama will inherit this crisis. But I trust him to deal with it. I would hate to see the rightwingers in power during a crisis, with all the extra powers they have given the presidential office. Democracy must survive.
I just read on CNN.com that Palin doesn’t plant to return to Alaska until after the election – she will travel for over 50 days straight, but luckily, Todd will travel with her. What???
Isn’t he taking care of the kids? How do they leave a newborn, a seven year old and two teenagers (one pregnant at that) for almost two months?
Who travels on business, to this extent especially, with their spouse?
Sounds like Todd is loving the attention and circus atmosphere – much more fun than the boring grind at home with the kids. This is the trip of a lifetime for old Todd. Sounds like the first dude needs a little vetting too, as this is clearly a package deal.

as an “Independent” voter…..who tends to lean toward the left…I’m always amazed at the way the right likes to call us “liberals” or “socialists” as if those are dirty words!
just for fun I went to wikipedia looked up “liberal”…all in all everything it says looks GOOD to me…so why is it so BAD to be a liberal?
as for “socialist”, I have solid christian background…and my understanding is that Jesus was a socialist. Again, why is that bad then?

There is a group out of Florida (GOP) who are boycotting her show and mag (not that that will make one bit of diff to Oprah) – but she could be doing two mins at the end of every show talking to her audience about the issues and driving home the point that BO is the change we NEED.”
Respectfully, I disagree. She’s a TV show host. Yes, one with a lot of power, but she’s said she’s not getting involved this time. She can’t. She endorsed Obama, which is more than she’s ever done before.
She’s not hosting the candidates.
Her show shouldn’t be a platform for her to get out her political stance.
The people who are boycotting her show are doing it because she endorsed him. Plug his postition on issues at the end of the show? Nooooo. Backlash.
Tomorrow’s show is about the education bill and how to protect kids from sexual predators. I think that’s more than enough. Tacit endorsement. Overt statements won’t work. Not when Obama has already been accused of the cult of personality.
Folks, do what you want about this, but I fear it will bite Obama in the butt.

Isn’t he taking care of the kids? How do they leave a newborn, a seven year old and two teenagers (one pregnant at that) for almost two months?

You have to wonder. Where is the baby? And as far as Todd goes…well I have the feeling that he is the real driving force behind this family. In other words. Their family values SUCK…which explains a lot.

What are we, a bunch of aging hippies? That wouldn’t be such a surprise, would it.
Don’t be discouraged because there are so many old folks here. Many of us went through this organizing/protesting bit once before.
timc–
So, it really is “the economy, stupid” I think Carville said that years ago, but I have posted here about it…pages ago. …and I believe it!
We have everyone lining up for bailouts (Bear Stearns,Fannie, Freddie, Lehman, Ford), we’re pushing through arms sales to Dubai and anyone else in the middle east who “pretends” to agree with us, oil companies already got theirs and Merrill Lynch goes to the door tomorrow, we’re selling America to anyone who will buy.
This is the “economic poll” that tells me the Republicans have ceded the election—they want to get what they can before an Obama administration imposes oversight on these activities.
I’m coutning on Barack and Joe to say fine–that’s the deal you struck with the last administration. Now let’s go to the table and do this right!
Image of today—pigs at the trough.
Image for tomorrow—get it right this time!
@MissSue aka Barrel McRaven Palin – re: Bush Doctrine, controversial subject. It’s been altered numerous times, hence making her initial response “In what respect?” a point of argument amongst her supporters. (They’ve even managed to convince people that her next idiotic response, “His world vieew?” wasn’t so bad!) There are also those who think that she shouldn’t have been expected to know what it is at all. To people watching that kind of commercial who support McCain/Palin, I think it would completely backfire. I’ve already seen a lot of people who didn’t know what it was themselves, dismiss it completely — if THEY didn’t know it, why should she? That’s how some see it. I think there are better, more tangible things.
@otis re: Oprah. She hasn’t had any of the candidates on. Obama was on before he announced he was running. Especially considering that she came out in public for the first time to endorse a candidate, I think she is doing the right thing. I don’t belong to the “Church of Oprah” but I feel sorry for what she’s being accused of. I don’t want to see Palin OR any of the other candidates on until after the election.
I am 37. Never gave money to a candidate before, but I have given 4 times to Obama. Never volunteered before, but just signed up for Counsel for Change and to write some post cards. Never posted on a blog before this one. I have included this link on my facebook page and have told everyone I know about it.
I am looking forward to casting my vote FOR someone this year, instead of just AGAINST someone. Funny, until August 29, I was only casting my vote FOR Obama. Now I am also casting it AGAINST McCain (for perptrating this travesty on the country that I love) and Palin (for more reasons that I could list here).
Catherine, I am 28. It’s good to see a nice range of ages, here!
Intrigued, thank you so much for the new information on aerial “hunting”.
For anyone outside of Alaska, this practice is HIGHLY looked down on by the majority of Alaskans. Yes, even hunters. There is absolutely no need for it. If the moose/caribou population did dip down dangerously low, why wouldn’t they just ban sport hunting for a while, hmm?
Wolves pick out the sick animals, creating healthier herds. Also, in nature, the predator/prey take turns in dominating the population. For a time, there will be more prey, and then after a while, there will be more predators. When there isn’t enough prey to support the predator’s population, they will die off, and there will be more prey.
Catherine – I am 60.
I am also wondering if there are folks who are willing to share where they live. Possibly some of us are very near each other and could join forces to support each other and finding ways to become effective COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS

i agree. it is criminal that those in power have left our country in shambles and have made terrible decisions that have impacted the world in a negative way. i trust after 8 years of Obama we will be set on the right path again, but it will take a lot longer to be fully healed. the key is, we should not reward ignorance and greed and we definitely cannot become complacent.
Does anyone living in Alaska know if the Palins or family are outfitters.Do they own a plane? I hunt but I do not hunt from a plane that just makes me sick.To ran an animal into the ground is just sick.Hell it’s hard enough to walk in heavy deep snow let alone run in it.

Cassie,
Yes it always comes down to the economy for most voters. I have lots of friends at Lehman and Merrill with 6 and 7 figure incomes who are now unemployed. CNBC is showing Lehman employees walking out of their offices with boxes.
These peope would normally be Repub voters due to economic self interest. Think that might change now.
katiebegood – I hope you are right.
The situation is making me take more of an active roll. I was a first time donator this week, and I just called the local Obama office up to put a sign in my yard. ( Signs in Denver are not here yet and are supposed to arrive later this week). I’m going to see if I can get a few additional signs and look for people who are willing to place them in their yards. My neighborhood happens to have a lot of McCain signs everywhere.

Laughing No Longer…Did not see it. But the European posters/readers here have made me feel it is the case.
Is it true that our national debt has significantly increased over the past 2 days? And the millions in damage in TX. It’s an intervention electorate, folks!
‘Bush Doctrine,’ the definition keeps changing, but I always thought of it as ‘creating your own reality’ (because I considered myself a member of the ‘reality-based community’) and acting preemptively for US interests, up to and including war, or war by other definitions. Yes, I think it is both a world view and a policy (they are obviously connected), but it was not a smooth answer.
The kids are probably being minded by extended family or a nanny.
G’night, all, I live in SE MN. Kinda purple these days. I will continue with calls and gleaning talking points I read here, and seeing if local dems want to get together. All you have to do is walk into the local DFL office here and they give you something to do, so….
RW-I’m in the Denver metro area also, but more out in the “burbs” and I have yet to see a McCain sign, although I have seen both McCain and Obama bumper stickers. I did see one apparently homemade Obama sign someone put out on median today). One can only hope that Colorado will stay on the blue side, but I know it will be tight.
I have signed up to help at local Obama headquarters.

What is the story with Todd? I’m anxious to read some good reporting about his seemingly vast influence over his wife’s business affairs. Did he sit in on her budget meetings as reported? Is he really copied on all her official correspondence?

I agree with you, Olive. Let’s stick to the real issues, guys!
hi all- i’m going to repost this re: the Bush Doctrine because there seems to be some misinformation. it is important – we cannot change our STRATEGERY of pre-emptive war until we get out of the one we’re in.
the argument is contained herein…
sorry i’m not a better writer, but the part about one-liners, is very serious! thanks all.
regarding mclaughlins erroneous assertions:
the bush doctrine is an addition to along stream of “doctrines” in our history. each one is a response to the previous, either in departing from its premise, or adding to it.
remember the Monroe Doctrine? says we can mess in the affairs of anyone in our hemisphere. it was a response to european powers meddling in south and central america, and the response of a young country that saw the dangers of pressure from the outside. remember, there were a lot of different interests that were in conflict. agriculture in the south, manufacturing in the north. the civil war wasn’t about slavery as much as divergent economic interests in totality.
the roosevelt correlary added an economic dimension in order to blunt european aid and expanding trade to our neighbors. This one also is the beginning of the basis of expansion of the presidency, leading right up to our imperial exec we got now. each one built on the previous to some extent.
we all heard about the Powell doctrine, a reaction (thus a departure and shift) to miscalculation of our abilities to use war as a solution. I think on the wiki page there is a timeline of doctrines at the bottom.
The Bush doctrine says pre-emptive war is ok. based in the philosophy of the neo-cons, it plays on the “OPPORTUNITY” that the “end” of the cold war presents to the united states. there has been NO departure of this from Bush, Inc. There has been plenty of diplomatic backpedaling, and loads of infighting between the signatories to the PNAC. Their theories proved untenable, but they aren’t willing to give up the notion of hegemonic world power. all this wedge-issue and culture stuff is marketing and distraction. cheney and his ilk truly believe their theory is still correct. dominate or be dominated. thats how they see it.
so mclaughlin is a pundit, and i don’t care if he knows or doesn”t know BASIC tenets of first-year college poly-sci. But, in order to make those “unblinking” decisions, one should have a strong basis of knowledge as to how these forces operate and conflict with one another. The mere idea that one could learn a bunch of policy one-liners with one perspective and posess NO depth of understanding and run this country is LUDICROUS.
john mclaughlin flat out LIED.
jeez, can ya believe they would DO such a thing? in-credible.

@ Olive (17:26:44) : “Sounds like the first dude needs a little vetting too, as this is clearly a package deal.”
I find it downright creepy that Todd follows Sarah around like a henchman. If he was delivering speeches as a surrogate, like Michelle Obama, I could understand but he’s just smiling and waving.
Earlier someone mentioned maybe Sarah can’t make final decisions without him because of her religious beliefs, i.e. he is “god head” of the family.
I know I’m biased against her, but when I try to step back and be objective it’s still odd that he’s always right on her heels. I don’t see Biden’s wife following him around everywhere, so what gives?.
I’m 57, raised in GOPland, Orange County, CA. I actually went to a Nixon rally when I was 14 but came to my senses when I went to college. I protested against the Vietnam War, worked actively for George McGovern, cried when Bush stole the election in 2000 and I had cousins who were at Kent State and saw student murdered by Nat’l Guard.
I am anti-war more than anything else (although I supported finding Osama Bin Laden and bringing him to justice.
I’m of the sincere belief that wars accomplish nothing except to kill, main and destroy. Obama says he believes in diplomacy. Palin says she would attack without blinking. She scare me – alot.
I have four children, 36, 34, 27 and my ‘baby’ is 14 (who I had when I was 43).
I am afraid for this election because I am very afraid the closet racism will raise it’s ugly head and keep people from making the right choice.
I want the conversation to go back to the economy and the war. I’m sick of the Republican’s dirty tricks and lying ways but I can tell you that they have been doing it since I was a kid so it’s not going to change.
Blogs like this, which as we can all see, resulted in visible action, is what will make the difference I pray!!!!

I think racism is apparent in people who say, “I don’t know enough about Obama’s background” to vote for him, yet they were behind Palin five minutes after her introduction because she seems like “one of us.” I know many people like this and they don’t consider themselves racist.
This is why 70% of the so-called independents will probably break for McCain.
timc…” I have lots of friends at Lehman and Merrill with 6 and 7 figure incomes who are now unemployed. CNBC is showing Lehman employees walking out of their offices with boxes. These peope would normally be Repub voters due to economic self interest. Think that might change now.”
I wish that were true, but one of our kids stayed with the transition team at Bear Stearns and most of those guys just went elsewhere and will continue to vote Republican, at least for several more years.
That kid (of ours) is currently in Zambia collecting material to write about. I can’t wait to post her “Obama” pictures from there–we’re only getting short emails at the moment.
I, too, would almost vote Republican so that Mc Cain or Sarah would have to deal with this economic mess, but I love my country too much!
Hey, Olive. The cover of the NY Times today has a story you would be very interested in. Covers all sorts of juicy tidbits on how Todd Palin has been present at confidential meetins and that Palin’s kids are taken care of by a babysitter (no big deal) who is label Palin’s executive assistant (or something like that) to the tune of $68K ( a big deal).
NOT THAT I EXPECT THIS TO APPEAR IN THE STATESMAN-BUT HERE GOES
GOVERNOR PALIN’S OPPOSITION TO ABORTION REALLY DISTURBS ME. HAVING WORKED WITH RAPE AND INCEST VICTIMS OVER A PERIOD OF MANY YEARS, OBSERVING THE PAIN AND GRIEF THEY SUFFER, HOW COULD ANY INDIVIDUAL OBJECT TO THEIR CHOICE TO, OR NOT TO, HAVE AN ABORTION. THAT OUGHT TO BE A PERSONAL DECISION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL AND THEIR MAKER. IT SERVES NO REAL PURPOSE TO AJUDICATE AN INDIVIDUAL’S CHOICE, ESPECIALLY, UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS SUBJECT IS SO SENSITIVE THAT NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO APPLY THEIR OWN PRINCIPALS TO ANOTHER WOMAN THE WAY PALIN DOES. NO ONE! WOMEN OUGHT TO ASK THEMSELVES; “IF MY DAUGHTER WERE RAPED, OR HAD TO ENDURE INCEST, AND BECAME PREGNANT AS AN END RESULT WHAT WOULD I WANT FOR HER? BETTER YET, WOULD I WANT HER TO MAKE “THE” CHOICE, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A GOOD PHYCOLOGIST , OR WOULD I WANT HER TO SUFFER THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE OF AN ACT THAT WAS NOT OF HER CHOOSING, UNDER A LAW PUT INTO PLACE BY THE STATE, OR GOVERNMENT?” WOMEN WAKE UP! THESE LAWS WILL EFFECT YOU!!! PALIN IS NOT AN ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN!
FURTHER I AM OPPOSED TO THE IDEA THAT RAPE VICTIMS HAD TO PAY 800-1200$ FOR RAPE KITS IN THE CITY OF WISILLA, AK. WHEN PALIN WAS MAYOR. WHY WOULD GOV. PALIN, WHO IS IN IN A POSITION OF CHANGING A LAW SO BIASED AGAINST ANOTHER WOMAN, OR FEMALE CHILD, WITH THE ABILITY TO RALLY FOR CHANGE, OPPOSE DOING SO? THIS IS PART OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM, IT IS THE ONLY SCIENTIFIC WAY OF APPREHENDING A PERP. ONE NEEDS TO WONDER HOW PALIN WOULD HANDLE SUCH A LAW AS V.P. I THINK THE UNITES STATES IS NOT YET READY FOR A SARAH PALIN AS V.P. WOMEN SHOULD FEEL SAFE AND PROTECTED BY THE LAWS IN THIS WONDERFUL PLACE WE CALL AMERICA, NOT OPRESSED BY LAWS THAT PLAY IN FAVOR OF PERPETRATORS OF VIOLENT CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN. AGAIN I SAY PALIN IS NOT FOR WOMEN AND WOMEN’S ISSUES.
I WOULD LIKE TO INTERJECT ONE COMMENT TO JERRY KRAMER: CONSIDERING YOUR SUPPORT OF ABORTION IN THE PAST, AND WE BOTH UNDERSTAND THIS STATEMENT, I FEEL YOUR OPINION IS RATHER MOOT. REFER BACK TO 1996-7. REGARDS AN IDAHO WOMAN!
@Catherine – I’m 54. I didn’t vote in ‘72 and we got Nixon – I’ve felt guilty ever since. I voted 3rd party in ‘80 and we got Reagan – (Nothing against 3rd parties – sometimes the 2 party system seems so futile, but I’m so sick of hearing about St. Ronald.)

Thanks Alice… I appreciate your comment. I hope more people will catch on to how screwed up these people are that want to govern us. It is hard to fathom.
Are Sarah Palin’s Wires Crossed?
In her interview with Charlie Gibson, Sarah Palin said in response to a question about her readiness to be vice president, “I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can’t blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can’t blink.” Aside from the odd grammar, many analysts have discussed this comment in terms of her inability to blink in the face of her mission, but not her unusual use of the term, “wired in a way.”
It’s a term I haven’t heard in years and it struck me as noteworthy and worth discussion. Those of us past forty might remember people saying they were “wired” to behave in a certain fashion, often as an excuse for excessive behavior, but it is a term that has fallen out of fashion. Nowadays, we like to believe that we actually think about what we do and why we do it, rather than react because of some sort of mental preprogramming.
What does she mean by “wired?” Are we to assume that she is wired 100% in America? Are some of us wired in China? Is she pre-wired to be vice president? I guess if we knew more about her wiring, we could ascertain how she might govern the country. I would love to have a psychologist weigh in on this.
I’m 59 and live in Central Maine….
The further north you go in Maine, the more conservative it gets. But people are really hurting right now and are fearful of the upcoming winter. Oil prices are obscene and many cannot afford to fill their tanks.
These pocketbook issues will have an impact on how people vote this year.
I believe that this may be Obama’s year in Maine.

Roe v. Wade will never be overturned.
I read here the other day that it is because the Republicans use it every election cycle as the sentinel issue to get their faithful to the polls, and that very well may be true.
But there is another reason that is 100% proven: All of the Powers That Be, the so-called “elites,” have been eugenicists. If you look back at the Ruling Families of America in the early 20th century, you will see that every single one of them supported eugenics programs. I am talking the Kelloggs, Carnegies, Astors, Rockefellers, Morgans, Harrimans (Bush relative), etc.
All of the “elites” to this day (Warren Buffett, etc.) contribute a ton of money to so-called “population control” groups, which is really eugenics that has been repackaged. If you don’t believe it look at the history of Planned Parenthood — Margaret Sanger was a flaming eugenicist.
The real goal that these people have is to abort black and brown babies, not white ones. That is a sad fact. Do the Googling if you don’t believe it.
ocliberal–”Blogs like this, which as we can all see, resulted in visible action, is what will make the difference I pray!!!!”
You are so right, Ocliberal. I’m right with you, but I’m not trying to explain all this to a teenager—God bless you!
Life is long, but the time for action is now.
How much did it cost to go to this Ed Shultz program? Why did he charge in the first place. Doesn’t he go around to colleges and do radio shows for them without charging. I know he has to make a buck but let the advertisers pick it up and maybe he could have filled the room. I was going to go just to support Obama but I refuse to give my money to Ed Shultz. Remember Ed talks a good line but he was a Reagan Republican and who knows if he didn’t vote for Bush one and at least Bush two the first time. A Republican doesn’t in my mind all of a sudden become a progressive overnight. I hope Ed is doing this from the heart and not the pocketbook

Absolutely! In past elections, if I’m remembering correctly, she hosted both candidates. Now that she has endorsed Obama, I don’t think she can opine about the election without seeming biased. As a former journalist, I think she’s showing her journalistic integrity. I think using her show to advance her politician would be a big mistake for her and him.

You aint kidding. He hits the nail on the head with this: “Sorry, but there is no sustainable political/military power without economic power, and talking about one without the other is nonsense. Unless we make America the country most able to innovate, compete and win in the age of globalization, our leverage in the world will continue to slowly erode. Those are the issues this election needs to be about, because that is what the next four years need to be about.”
This sentence sums it up nicely: “There is no strong leader without a strong country. And posing as one, to use the current vernacular, is nothing more than putting lipstick on a pig.”

We might even have to look at when they get close, like Columbia, MO. They should be all over MO since it is such a big swing state. KS may be over looked since EVERYONE already knows which way it is colored on the map, but everyone fights over Missouri(completely ironic too since KS was the one on the correct side in the civil war and now MO is the one that tends to be more open)

Friedman also says, “…From having Sarah Palin “reform” Washington — as if she has any more clue how to do that than the first 100 names in the D.C. phonebook?”
I would like Palin to take a 11th grade U.S. History and Civics test. My guess is that she has a limited knowledge of how the federal government functions, let alone how to reform it. Talk about hubris!

I’ve been questioning the pitbull analogy for awhile though myself. There are lots of things I would want to be compared to but pitbull just isn’t one of them. All I can figure is that this is a man writing a speech for a woman and trying to say what he thinks will appeal to women without having a clue about women at all!
Cassie: My preppie 14 year who just started high school last week (sob!) went off to school sporting a bag pack covered with peace signs. I don’t think she even has a clue what the peace sign used to represent or how ’60’s’ she is being. The irony isn’t lost on me though and I certainly don’t disapprove.
If these kids today want to promote peace as what is the cool ‘in thing’ to wear these days, I’m all for it!

Intrigued (18:21:46) :
Roe v. Wade will never be overturned.
One or two more ultraconservative Supreme Court Justices could very easily set Roe vs. Wade aside and it goes back to the states. Several red states are already working to outlaw abortion making it financially impossible for poor women to then have to drive hundreds of miles to another state for a safe abortion.
Palin and her ilk- extreme religious right- are waiting with baited breath to throw some cases at a right controlled Supreme Court. My mother nearly bled to death in the 1960’s from an illegal abortion that she had to go to
another state to find. When it was made legal in 1971 things changed and women stopped dying and were far less likely to suffer infertility issues later that can be attributed to botched abortions.
Don’t kid your self thinking it couldn’t happen. Sending it back to the states would almost guarantee the reds states would find a way to severely limit or
ban abortions. The federal government could place pressure on all states by withholding funding for health related issues if they too didn’t agree to put
heavy restrictions on abortion.
Only a portion of McC’s medical records were released to the press — If I remember correctly – it was on a Friday before holiday weekend and the press only had like 30 minutes No photographs of documents either —

AKMuckraker, thanks for the email, and I used several of your pics on my blog and even told them about your infiltration of the Sarah Palin welcome home rally. I don’t have anywhere near the number of readers that you do, but I’m sure they will all be coming to check out your site if they haven’t already. “In fact I cannot say anything about this candidacy that takes it in any way seriously. It is a farce. It is absurd. It is an insult to all intelligent people. It is a sign of a candidate who has lost his mind. There is no way to take the nomination of Palin to be vice-president of the world’s sole superpower – except to treat it as a massive, unforgivable, inexplicable decision by someone who has either gone insane or is managerially unfit to be president of the United States. When, at some point, the hysteria dies down, even her supporters will realise that, by this decision, McCain has rendered himself unfit to run a branch of Starbucks, let alone the White House.”

“The real goal that these people have is to abort black and brown babies, not white ones.”
I tend to take a different take on this. I think that the reversal of Roe V Wade is intended to force black and brown babies to be born, then to deny them social services to support them and thereby commit them and their families ( or mothers) to a repeated cycle of poverty.
If we don’t feed them, clothe them, educate them ( when they are unable to do so themselves) we guarantee their failure…
Social problems exist, and Republicans like to trt those problems out at election tim.

I was afraid to speak up as an “infiltrator” but it ended up that there were a couple of other parents that the other parents who were there for the same reasons that I was… message.
I did learn a few things. Nixon wasn’t all bad. His fascination with communist China (wishful thinking?) ended up opening up the dialogue with Asia.
Anyways…good choice in signs…I was going for the most impact….not the most truthful (guilty?).
Lets bring the PEACE back! and a pride for liberalism!

Sarah seems to be a driven little student, busy, cramming away.
I just checked out the Daily Kos rally pics — great going !!
Point to Ponder:
McCain graduated nearly the bottom of his class – yet still managed to make “fighter pilot” (where the slots were for the most “elite”)
Believe he crashed 5 planes during his military flying days – but was quite reckless (thereby earning his title “Maverick”)
Is perhaps the Sarah Palin pick his attempt to come out the Hero or do another crash & burn …..? Or am I just reading too much into this?

I’m 57 and was not an activist in college and we got Nixon. I’m trying to make up for that now.
I spit out my bedtime chamomile tea on that one Joe… and I’m right there with you — 55(56 in November if I dont’ have a stroke around the 4th) I didn’t work hard enough against Nixon the second time around… outrage yes… boots to the ground in ‘72 no…

Amused and Bewildered (17:34:54)
(They’ve even managed to convince people that her next idiotic response, “His world vieew?” wasn’t so bad!)
Say it ain’t so A&B, say it ain’t so!
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again… they (her Republiar Programmers) thought so little of the “Bush Doctrine” that they didn’t even think to coach her on it. It was obvious that she hadn’t been coached on it because all during the interview, she was doing the up left eye shift look (in NLP-speak that is the eye move one makes when trying to remember) When he asked her the Bush Doctrine question, she didn’t look up. She hesitated, looking straight ahead, she said “In what respect, Charrrlieee?”. To me, this was her “blink” and her Programmers had to scramble to make it seem that the Bush Doctrine was of little consequence.
Laughing No Longer… (18:00:47)
Thanks for bringing this post over. and as I said in the previous thread and I’ll second it here… when you say “The mere idea that one could learn a bunch of policy one-liners with one perspective and posess NO depth of understanding and run this country is LUDICROUS.” you could not be more correct. We have been forced to listen to 8 years of one-liners from the Bushies and now we are getting second gen on it. Witness SP stating not once, not twice, but three times in a row that she couldn’t possibly second guess what Israel has to do to defend itself. Please. Programming down the line. I wonder if they withheld food and water until she got it right.
Actually, I am a bit younger then a “hippie”,
Though I decided at age five that I wanted to be one (my family was solid republican and Kennedy haters).
Still I proudly wore a ribbon on my head as pc head band and beat the drums of liberalism…….
I met my first black man when I went to visit my recently divorced dad in DC…I was scared shitless and I felt awful about it. I made my first non-white friends in the liberal atmosphere of Oberlin college…which I choose solely because it was MOST liberal college I could get into. I was a terrified most of the time and I was lousy student.
Here I am now…..older and wiser and happy that I challenged myself to think beyond the white catholic rhetoric i was rasied in! All because I wanted to be a hippie when I was five.

Interesting article
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/09/22/080922fa_fact_gourevitch?printable=true
I do not believe that the Republicans EVER plan to reverse Roe vs. Wade. For almost 30 years, they have claimed to be against abortion in order to garner votes yet they have not ended it. If abortion were ever made illegal, the Republicans would lose the one issue that gains them the most votes. I believe that they will NEVER come through for their anti-abortion supporters; if they did, they would lose their “base.”

I was a hippie, am a hippie and always will be a hippie. I campaigned my ass off for the McGovern/Shriver ticket, not so much because they were the very best for the country but because anything would have been better than four more years of Nixon.
there is a piece in the WSJ today about the McCain campaign doubling it’s payroll and going on an infrastructure expansion binge over the last two weeks to deal with the Palin phenomenon.
given that there appears to be nothing more to learn about her and plenty more for her to learn. this may turn out to be the implosion factor. one that
has been witnessed many times before. people that they can not control, all sorts of internal squabbles etcetcetc. if all goes right, in a couple of weeks you should see Johnny hitting up Cin for a few million to keep things rolling as the campaign spins out of control.

alice: NIxon Library is my hometime. That irony isn’t lost on me either. Of course I’ve been there but really only a few times considering it’s less than 3 blocks from my house. I grew up in a family the worshipped Nixon so I have mixed feelings about him. The library is interesting in that is skims right over the whole Watergate/Impeachment ‘glitch’ and presents Nixon as this marvelous peacemaker and diplomat.
I’ve been a Girl Scout leader for over eight years and every year the Girl Scouts have a huge event at the Nixon Library. Pat Nixon was born on the same day as Girl Scouts (or something like that) so every year I drag my girls over there because we can get in free that day. I would much rather have a Jimmy Carter Library in my backyard but unfortunately I guess we have to take the President who was born in our city.

I believe that Obama’s head start in getting the infrastructure on the ground may be the reason that people driving around their towns are seeing lots of Obama signs and very few McCain signs – yet.
“Maybe someone here can tell you how to remove a bumper sticker, but I don’t know how..(frown!)”
It’s really quite simple, you just approach the vehicle from the rear and when you are sure the owner of the car isn’t looking, you simply press firmly over the entire bumber sticker.
Oh yeah, and make sure that you have an Obama/Biden sticker in your hand while you are pressing. The McCain sticker will still be there, but it’ll be hidden under the Obama sticker.
Intrigued, I know I said I was going to ignore you, and I was until you started talking about the wolves, and I thought, I need to apologize to Intrigued for thinking s/he was a troll… THEN you went and said that stuff about eugenics… so you can sound as sympathetic as you want to in the future… make all the agreeing noises you want… but to me you are a Troll with a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for Palin and now I am ignoring you again and for good.

Overturning Roe v. Wade
John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.
Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.
However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion – the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby. The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, “At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level.”
Randy, I do a lot of artwork, including my own cartoons and an occasional coloring book (nothing national, just little things for the locals) Think I may run with that one, and a couple others that came to mind watching Tina Fey on saturday night live.
I got a poll call today. I was asked lots of Obama and McCain questions, asked about how the recent ads were impacting my vote, asked about my stance on abortion, asked about economic issues and international security issues, etc.
Hope I helped the Obama poll numbers.
Sue (19:09:34) :
“I do not believe that the Republicans EVER plan to reverse Roe vs. Wade. For almost 30 years, they have claimed to be against abortion in order to garner votes yet they have not ended it. If abortion were ever made illegal, the Republicans would lose the one issue that gains them the most votes. I believe that they will NEVER come through for their anti-abortion supporters; if they did, they would lose their “base.””
The words I am about to write make me shudder. That said…I am growing nearer to thinking the Roe V Wade will have to be overturned before we can take our government back. So long as the Republicans can haul out that old, tattered banner right before election day (Sarah Palin), the Evangelical voters, young and old, become energized.
If the individual states were to take up the decision of abortion, and some of them would, then the politics would become, again, local. Governors could rise or fall on the issue, but not presidents and vice-presidents. And women could travel for legal abortions, assuming airlines and buses continue to run (currently, those services are in jeopardy!)
Presidential elections should not be decided over abortion! While legal and safe abortions will be able to be found, there are far more important national issues…like national security, energy independence, the economy!
I need to go get some mouthwash now.
I never wanted to say those words, since we fought long and hard for abortion rights…most of us…at least I did. But the #^%tards have hijacked it and we need to face that fact…and try to deal with it.
Cartoon Pig Dog (18:35:30)
yep… I read as much as I could stand and set it aside for a day — I have been relaying news feeds to friends in Houston without power. all the stations have been showing streaming live news. I have managed to keep an entire neighborhood more informed than FEMA… can I be Director of FEMA in the next administration? teeheehee.
Anyway, I wanted to curl up in a fetal position and my psychosomatic laryngitis is back (I used to work for a Medicare call center until the laryngitis hit because I couldn’t tell the little old people the truth about Medicare!) Frankly I am scared of the implications of both NSPD51 and HR1955… So what do we do, where do I sign up and can we be assigned to the same concentration camp? When I read them to my husband he said it is Jericho (the TV show) all over again…. he may be right.
I think everyone believes Roe v Wade was a bad decision legally. The court acted b/c the government did not. Given how long it has stood it is very unlikely for an outright overturn.
What is more likely is for a conservative court to put additional limitations on when it can be allowed.
Not trying to start a battle here and I am 100% pro-choice.
If Roe went away the right would be after some other freedom, outlawing gays or some other nonsense. They cannot tolerate differences which is why they are conservative.

McCain-Palin will do anything to get elected.
Palin has No Experience to be Vice President. However, I think she is running to be the President. We can’t let this happen!!!!!!
I am from Kansas City too on the Kansas side and all my friends and I cannot stand Sarah Palin. What a nightmare but Obama is going to win!!!!

Cassie and Sue,
I think the part of Obama’s convention speech that I liked the most was when (if I’m remembering correctly) he talked about the issues that divide us – guns, abortion, etc., and asked that we come together as a nation in spite of this. Then McCain picks Palin, the speech is overshadowed, and the culture wars heat up again. I think that’s what makes me most angry about the Palin candidacy. I could probably get over how unqualified she is – b/c I’m hoping that it won’t matter, since she’ll lose – but she’s turning the campaign back into a contest of who is the most righteous. And I’m so afraid that will stay w/ us even when Obama wins. Sickening.
tonya (19:25:32)
Though it is flawed, I am against Roe v Wade ever getting overturned…A woman has the right to choose and without that tight will go take elaborate and dangerous risks to hold onto her sense of self. I know. I was there with an unwanted pregnancy.
I choose…that is important……to have my baby. Without that choice I may have been more desperate to terminate the pregnancy because I would have felt forced into it.
This is very important.
I just now tuned to a station on my TV that was doing a puff piece on Sarah Palin. MSNBC ran one last night. So, when are they going to start doing the puff pieces on Joe Biden?
I have to say I am sick to death of Sarah Barracuda and her nasal screechy voice. How anyone can stand to listen to her for more than 5 minutes is beyond me.
I do have to say that I was encouraged tonight listening to some talking heads who weren’t particularly critical of her but they all said that she is going to have to step up to the plate and start answering questions before anyone is going to be able to truly take her seriously. Even Tom Brokaw said it and he’s the biggest right wing talking head out there in the MSM.

Thanks for the link to the Andrew Sullivan piece. All I can say is amen.

On Kudlow and Co., Palin, when asked if she would consider the veep job, asks, “What exactly is it that the VP does?” She was used to working hard, blah, blah, blah. If the job could help Alaskans, she would consider it.
OK, first, she doesn’t know what the veep does, but accepts the offer?
Second, what happened to country first? Wasn’t that the theme of the convention?
I think for Palin, it’s Palin first. Screw the investigation. I can get out of that. Screw my kids. I’ve got a nanny to watch them. Screw ‘em all! I’ll be a heartbeat away from the President. I’ll take him down like a moose and then rule the world!
I truly think the woman’s ego is out of control. I mean, psychologically out of control. I think her thoughts about what is best for her precludes her from thinking about what would be best for others.

It is interesting how perspectives change so….
I remember my mother wanting to hang the American flag upside down in protest for Vietnam. I remember when my brother-in-law was sent to Nam and we’d send him and other friends homemade cookies and other gifts from home. I remember my boyfriend at the time loosing his best friend at Nam. I remember watching a friend have flash backs and freaking out, when he got home from Nam.
We were protesting the damn war, but we weren’t protesting our troops. At least not from my prospective.
It was an ugly time, and I remember so clearly watching war protests and later Watergate on TV. I was in college at the time.
It was decades before any of us again felt pride in America.
And for a brief time I felt it….that thing called patriotism….so brief….
And these last 8 years, it is like going back in time. Yet now there is this bizarre Handmaiden’s Tale crowd that is leading some Stepford Wife charge…
And those narrow minded people that made such a flippn deal out of Michelle Obama’s comment about not always feeling pride, they are hiding their head in the sand, drunk on some silly school spirit mentality.
If we can’t step back and look objectively at our country, seeing the good, bad and ugly, how can we ever improve it?
So you know what McCain fans, I have NOT always felt proud of my country.
I have NOT always felt patriot.
And I am not going to apologize. Because, I am an American, and while I love my country, I know it is imperfect.
And as member of DAR – Daughter’s of the Revolution, I know my ancestors weren’t perfect. But that is okay. They tried, and I am going to try. Some of my ancestors were those that did fight for the creation of this country, and our Constitution.
I know some of my ancestors also owned slaves, something that does not thrill me. I’m not saying this from some abstract notion, I know for a fact my ancestors owned a considerable number of slaves. It is an example of the mistakes they made, and tangible reasons why NOT to always feel pride for every aspect of this country.
It is ironic that Lincoln’s Republican party has morphed into this hateful party that incites racism and lies.

Have a friend in Ohio close ties to campaign says polls are 1 week and 1 day behind so keep that in mind. She says Rasmussen seemes to be most accurate.
Just finished reading all of today’s posts. Been in a blackout most of the day since last night’s storm uprooted a neighborhood tree and downed the lines.
I continue to be amazed by the community that has formed here over the last couple of weeks.
Saw in today’s paper that an Obama campaign office is opening here this week. Plan to go in at the earliest opportunity. I’m in the heart of Bill Clinton country (Little Rock) and can only hope that all who supported Hillary will come out in full for Obama.
I’ll be 55 in a couple of weeks and all I want for my birthday is an Obama administration!

“but she’s( Palin is) turning the campaign back into a contest of who is the most righteous. And I’m so afraid that will stay w/ us even when Obama wins. Sickening.
Righteous and right have very different meanings, Pamela. When President Obama takes the Oath of Office in January, it will be time for the trolls to crawl away ( for a while) and for “good people to come to the aid of their country”.
Keep thinking positive and working diligently!
swineprincess –
My mom’s fairly enlightened; she was never going to vote for McCain, although she much preferred Hillary, and was threatening a while back to stay home on election day because she wasn’t entirely on board with Obama. However, after the Palin bomb dropped, she became a very enthusiastic supporter of Obama. So I guess there’s that!
My emails are meant to maintain that high level of support.
My mother-in-law, however, is a completely different ball of yarn. The kind with knots and loose ends throughout it. Visiting this weekend, my husband and I had to leave the kids there and go for a drive after a very small conversation lead to her saying, “But she DID have to deal with the Russians! She had to do stuff with them.” Meanwhile, Fox “news” is blaring from the t.v. It made my brain hurt. I know there’s no getting through, and my husband, for his own sanity, is avoiding political discussions with his parents. Can’t win ‘em all, I guess.
On the topic of yard signs, there are tons of Obama in and around my neighborhood, but in the parents-in-law’s small Wisconsin town, lots of McCain. Husband and I let out an “oof…” every time we saw one, as though somebody’d punched us.
Okay, now, people. I need to get some work done. I have a deadline tomorrow and nothing written. I was once a productive person who slept at night…
Forgot to include my Palin baby name.

You certainly are deluded. If you think that Republicans will ever do something to help women who can’t afford a child have that child and raise it, you need some serious psychotherapy. The Republicans love the fetus and hate the child. They are against welfare and most other kinds of government aid to poor families. But even it they did help the women who can’t afford to have a child, IT’S NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS WHAT I DO WITH MY BODY. Why is it that you people can’t understand that? You are all for doing away with government regulation exception to regulate morality. And considering the fact that you Republicans are the least moral people on this planet, you really have no right to preach morality to us.

Tired of that bumper sticker on the rear bumper of your car or truck? Automotive expert Trisha Hessinger tells you the best way to remove a sticker without damaging your paint or chrome.
Begin by softening the sticker’s adhesive using a hair-dryer.
After the adhesive has begun to soften, spray a light spray-lubricant (WD-40)over the surface of the sticker. After the lubricant has soaked in for a few minutes, you should be able to begin peeling back the sticker. Peel slowly and carefully.
If you have to do any scraping to remove adhesive or sticker residue, use a plastic spatula or similar tool. Avoid using any sort of metal scraper or blade as this could scratch damage the paint or the bumper.
If any adhesive remains after the sticker has been removed, follow up by wiping the area well with ordinary rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth to help dissolve and remove the adhesive.

Katiebegood,
Like I said I am 100% behind the right to choose. As Obama said on the anniversary of the decision what it means is more important than the legal basis the court found in making the decision. The Warren court understood the principal was important even if they were stretching the law to make the argument.
“But we also know that Roe v. Wade is about more than a woman’s right to choose; it’s about equality. It’s about whether our daughters are going to have the same opportunities as our sons. And so to truly honor that decision, we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves, and their children, from violent relationships; so that a mom can stay home with a sick child without getting a pink slip; so that she can go to work knowing that there’s affordable, quality childcare for her children; and so that the American dream is within reach for every family in this country. This anniversary reminds us that it’s not enough to protect the gains of the past – we have to build a future that’s filled with hope and possibility for all Americans.”

I have done some research on Third Wave evangelical sites and sister Sarah seems to be their annointed one. Her fundamentalists are praying for the demise of JSM so she can be president. I guess that is why she is such an egomaniac.

You and I would have made a good team back in my own Irvine days… Kids had some great teachers who taught them the truth, in addition to the party line. Unfortunately both have since retired. The Nixon trip wasn’t part of the curriculum then. But I was asked to be the “resident radical” on a church-sponsored trip to Israel because I had studied Middle East history and had an understanding beyond that of most Americans. It was fun being the subversive, asking the tough questions, then offering additional information after hours over a glass of wine before dinner.

Thanks for the Friedman tip. His “Beruit to Jerusalem” is as even-handed description of the recent history as I’ve ever read. And he’s right on about the need for ET.
To all, Fareed Zakaria’s Global Public Square (CNN on Sundays) is always recorded in our household. Just watched it — interview with Friedman, several folks discussing probability of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuke sites, and an interview with Greg Mortenson of Three Cups of Tea. Okay I watched meet the press today and Rudy Guliana the little slimy slimeball was LYING nonstop.
And then he said that he advises Sarah Palin NOT to cooperate with Troopergate investigation because it was being run by Obama supporters and was not bipartisan.
I watched it too and I almost spit out my wine when he said that. So, he’s saying that the Obama campaign was in charge of Troopergate even before Ms. Barracuda was picked because the investigation had been going on for months before McBush picked Palin.
They really don’t get it that people are not stupid. Everyone watching him knew he was lying through his teeth. The right wingers don’t care because they think lying is just fine if it keeps them in power. The people who are not right wingers probably sat there and said WTF.
The excuse Rudy gave for their ad about sex education for kindergarten was very disingenuous also. He said he read the bill and it said that comprehensive sex education was for K-12 and that it included instruction on HIV/AIDS. What he failed to mention is that the bill says “age appropriate sex education”. The idea that any school would consider it “age appropriate” to teach kids in kindergarten about HIV/AIDS or even about sex is ludicrous. I really do wish that Tom Brokaw had come back with “well that’s your opinion but I asked you if you thought that ad was “respectful”. They ran McBush saying he would run a respectful campaign before Brokaw asked Rudy that question. But, as usual, Brokaw let him get away with not answering the question he asked.
It must be humiliating for those talking heads to know that the women on the View have done the most comprehensive interview with McBush to date.
I didn’t mean to start a discussion on abortion…just wanted to give my opinion that the Reps. use that issue to garner votes. I am a Bible-believing Christian who is voting for Obama. : ) OBAMA ‘08 !!!
Katiebegood,
I take it you are not a lawyer. Hopefully the point is moot because Obama will be elected which will keep the court at least marginally balanced and there will not be any votes regarding the validity of Justice Blackmuns decision. In parting I agree with Justice Ginsberg and other liberals on this issue:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg has criticized the Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade for terminating a nascent democratic movement to liberalize abortion law.[29] Likewise, legal affairs editor Jeffrey Rosen[30] and Michael Kinsley[31] say that a democratic movement would have been the correct way to build a more durable consensus in support of abortion rights.
IMHO, Brokow’s been drinking the Republican Kool-Aid as of late. For a journalist I once respected, he’s becoming a “subtle” Republican plant in the MSM. He *always* used to be balanced and non-partisan. I don’t know what’s happened to move Brokow to openly reveal more partisanship than he should, especially when he’s hosting a show that is NEWS oriented not COMMENTARY.
ds55 (17:04:40) :
@ willpen: McCain already released his medical records. Now we need a petition for Palin.
This is a lie. He released selected portions of his medical records to be viewed by a select audience. He has not fully revealed his medical records like all other presidential candidates have. There is a group of physicians who are demanding he release all his medical records because, as they say, it is our right to know what kind of physical condition our presidential candidate is in.
I don’t understand why MSM gave Palin such a pass on interview with Charles Gibson. My husband and I thought she looked like a” caribou “in the headlights. She clearly was programmed and was spewing randoms facts that had been prepared. Debbie Wasserman Schultz does an excellent job of getting to the point.
They put her up against a man for a reason. The press is terrified of sexism charge. Let Babera Walters at her for a one on one.
I don’t understand why people think that just because they don’t know what the Bush doctrine is, it’s OK for her not to know it! She is running for VP OF THE UNITED STATES

Ok, regarding abortion and Roe v Wade. I was 19 in August of 1972, 3 months before my 20th birthday and 5 months before Roe v Wade was decided. I found out that I was pregnant, by someone I didn’t want to marry, I was in college, and pretty much alone on the subject. I lived in Houston. My best friend urged be to call a group called Problem Pregnancy Information Service (PPIS) who arranged for people in Houston to go to either New York or LA for an abortion. I called. I arranged, and then I had to find $350 to go to LA. See it was a package deal. Just like a tour trip to Europe… Pay your $350 for all inclusive, airfare one night in a motel near the private clinic, abortion, and all the fruit juice you could drink before your return flight. Such a deal. I called the father of my embryo and asked for a contribution… His mother called me and told me I should have the baby and she would raise it. I told her I was not an incubator. He gave me $150. I had $50 that I’d managed to glean from not buying a couple of books I’d need later in the semester, which left me $100 short. My best male friend, who was in college in Dallas, gave me his fraternity dues (ok I was a hippy but I did know one frat boy – but cut me slack, I’d known him since the 7th grade). To this day I still owe him that $100.
Anyway, my best friend took me to the Continental Airlines terminal at IAH now known as Bush Intercontinental… will the ironies stop? And flew to LAX. I chose LA because they were allowed to pick you up at the airport. New York, which was actually somewhat cheaper, was not allowed by NY state law to pick up. When I arrived there was this guy holding a sign PPIS just like in those movies where the driver is holding the signs to pick up the celebrity. Almost every person on that Continental flight was going to LA for an abortion.
We suddenly got to know each other — people we had been sitting next to for the past hour and a half (those were the days of non-stop flights) were there for the same reason… A perky brunette drove us to our motelin a 14 passenger van … the motel was a Ramada I think, and were given packets, we met roommates … It was almost like we were there for a conference. There were women in this group from 15 (she was accompanied by her father) to 50-ish (she was perimenopausal with a 30 year old son in ‘Nam) We had a meeting that night and signed papers stating that it would make us mentally ill if we carried the child to term. Yes. I had to sign a paper that said I would be mentally ill if I carried to term.
We got as good a night sleep as possible and the next morning we peed in cups we’d been issued the night before, didn’t eat breakfast and were whisked to the clinic and prepped… this place was great… they even knocked you out to do the procedure… a valium before and an IV in the OR… I asked the anesthetist if I needed to count backward like in the movies… he said if I wanted to… I said “One…” and the next thing I knew I was in recovery. I kept asking the nurse if I was still pregnant… she kept telling me no… Finally I was awake enough to get up and they moved me to the fruit juice station… and then to the get dressed station… and then to the here’s your medication station… they gave me antibiotics and something to shrink my uterus… and then to the waiting van and the perky brunette who took me and 13 other newly de-pregnanted women (and one father) back to the airport, put us on a airplane that was again more than 80% filled with women doing exactly the same thing we’d done… and I went home. I was gone thirty-six hours. I told my parents I’d gone camping. I never told my mother I’d had an abortion. Even after she told me about her abortion on a midwife’s kitchen table in 1947. Sorry mom… she’s gone now so, in my cosmology she knows and she knows why I never told her… because to tell her after so many years would just have hurt her feelings because I didn’t think she (or my dad, who’s embryo she aborted) would have understood at the time… little did I know.
I don’t want any other woman to have to go out of her state to do this, like I did. And I certainly don’t want anyone to have to do what my mother did… she was lucky, she lived without incident.
Thanks for reading. This is why Roe v Wade needs to stay in force.
Augie,
I agree with your comment on Cindy and Sarah . Watch the body language when Sarah is hugging JSM.

Has anyone else read this new essay by Frank Rich? He makes a strong case that “they” (of the GOP powers that b)e are really planning for a Palin presidency. According to Rich, McCain will just be a feeble figurehead for one term if he makes it that long…Per Rich, her use of “Truman” in her acceptance speech was a linguistic tell; it was about a VP who became President. She really is a neocon/theocon “Manchurian Candidate.”
But here’s the deal: I don’t think she was ready for her roll-out. The GOP miscalculated. They did not groom her long enough. There’s the irony. (Please, America, prove me right. OBAMA/BIDEN ‘08)
G’night folks! You people make a difference, especially AKM.
Love our across the ponds posters, glad to know that we are many demographics and that issues transcend personalities—though that it is really hard to transcend when it comes to Sarah Palin.
sorry my calculations are a little short… I must have had $100 — what ever…
@ds55
Love the Obama logo. Just changed my Facebook profile picture. Boy will everybody be glad when this is all over. I know they are so over my enthusiasm (sp?)
AZtopcat-
I’m very intrigued with these four personalities. What IS the deal with Todd?

I was ready to sign out for the night, then I read your story. I truly wish I could put my arms around you and shush all noise away for you because you bared your soul to us this evening…and I love you, and everyone like you who could relate a story like this.
You are right, our choices should remain just that: our choices, no one elses.
Good night, dear swineprincess, your memory of this is safe where you keep it.
I’m going to try this one more time. I’ve posted myself on the list 3 times but I keep getting cut off. But I’m there 1000% even if I get cut off again.

Swineprincess,
Thanks for sharing. This an important election for women.
Swineprincess, my heart goes out to you.
swineprincess…you got me sitting here with a lump in my throat. I cannot ever imagine my girls having to go through all of what you went through (physically and emotionally) all those years ago. Palin will set back any gains made by the Women’s Movement for decades.
Thanks for sharing your story…I know how tough it is pulling that out of you and putting it in public. If just one person picks up on your story and passes it on, then you’ve done a great service.

Palmdale, CA (20:03:20) :
Irvine is pretty cool right now…..so many different nationalities and religions…it is democracy at it’s best. If only it was more cosmopolitan (call me an elitist!).
My son is in going to uni high…it is a great school that truly believes in preparing kids for a higher education!
You, OCliberal and I and any other cal gals should get together!
Sscratch my last message, it was a misleading title:
“A McCain adviser says early plans are to hold the town halls in western Michigan and Wisconsin, although the exact details of where and when they will be held are still being worked out. ”
It’s Michigan and Wisconsin needed to get on in on the town halls!

agh, misleading Summary, not title. Meh, need to go to bed.
thanks everyone… I have never felt “harmed” as the anti-choice people would have you believe that the decision is harmful… I processed it and it is done. I don’t believe that God or Goddess is angry with me for my choice.
It is an important election for women. In 1972 there were two states that had asserted themselves to allow women to choose. If we go back to those conditions, there will be many states that will not allow women to choose… primarily because of the huge numbers of neo-cons in state government. Roe v Wade is the only way to assure that a woman has a right to choose for herself. Worse still would be to return to the conditions of 1947 and my mother’s abortion. To force women to go to become criminals in the eyes of the law is unconscionable. Worse, to force women into deadly situations is criminal on the part of the state and every citizen of the state. We cannot let this happen.
‘gnight to you all — I love this place and each of you wonderful thinking fine human citizens of the country and this world.

Thank you! thank you! thank you! swine princess.
Been there and done that too in Oregon. The signing of the”mental illness” pledge was the ticket in those days, IF you had teh money.
How many more of us are there that endured the pain, the cost, the fear and the lies? How many died because they didn’t have $350 and some sort of access?
I get pretty frustrated with some in the younger generation who seem to think that Roe v Wade is always going to be available.
Thank you muckraker for making this forum available.
donate, volunteer, vote! Obama/ Biden 08!
add my name to the list of “No Palin”.
I’m from North Dakota, Ed Schultz is nothing more than a loud-mouth, bigoted, redneck, Rush Limbaugh wannabe who was a Democrat before he gave up being a sportscaster to be a Republican mouthpiece. Wait!!! Sarah Palin was a part-time sportscaster — that’s the link. Ed Schultz is now qualified to be president! He’s an embarrassment to the good citizens of North Dakota who are proud to elect an all-Democratic congressional delegation and a Republican 2 term governor who enjoys 80%+ approval ratings and is running for a 3rd term. Governor Hoven, who ran a bank before being elected, is more qualified to be VP. At least he knows how to balance a budget, promote energy development at home, create jobs, build a surplus, and run an election campaign based on reasoned debate on real issues. I apologize to the citizens of Alaska on behalf of all North Dakotans who cringe at the sound of Ed Schultz’s voice.
