Money for Nothing in the Palin Administration.

8 09 2008

Wow. We’re learning so much about that crazy Palin checkbook these days.  We’ve learned even more today, thanks to the Washington Post.  But before we get into that, let’s review.

First, one of my personal pet peeves.  Remember Frank Bailey?   He’s the one from the Palin administration who got taped calling Trooper Rodney Dial, and pressuring the department to fire Palin’s ex-brother-in-law, Trooper Mike Wooten.   After Palin admitted that this was really ‘embarrasing’, and could possibly look like she had instigated the call, she decided to give Bailey paid administrative leave.  This made sense because he would need to be readily available to the investigator and have free time to devote to finding the real killers assisting with the investigation.  That was August 13th, and Bailey is to remain on leave “pending an investigation”.  Well the investigation marched on, but Bailey, with all that free time on his hands, still didn’t show up for his deposition.  That means…where’s my calculator…  at a salary of $78,528…(click click click) that’s a total of (click) $5593.64.  For sitting home, and refusing to testify.  Nice work if you can get it.  That’s about 2 cents per resident of Alaska.  Hey, our two cents worth!

Then there’s Chuck Kopp.  He’s the guy who was reprimanded for sexual harassment, and wasn’t vetted, and took over the job as Chair of the Department of Public Safety, afte the beloved Walt Monegan was fired for not axing the aforementioned ex-brother-in-law.  After all of this came to light, Kopp said he had no intention of stepping down.  Then, two days later, he stepped down.  Strange…  But the mystery was solved when it was revealed that Kopp was the recipient of a $10,000 severance package, after two scandal-packed weeks on the job.

And now, this:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a “per diem” allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

Charging the state to stay at home?  Three hundred twelve times?  Let’s see…That’s approximately (click click click) 570 days total..into 312..round up the 7….  That’s 55% of her time as governor that she’s been getting paid by the state to stay at the ’Home Sweet Home’ hotel, and eat at the ’My Own Kitchen’ bistro.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official “duty station” is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post.

The governor’s daughters and husband charged the state $43,490 to travel and many of the trips were to and from their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show.

Gubernatorial spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Monday that Palin’s expenses are not unusual and that, under state policy, the first family could have claimed per diem expenses for each child taken on official business but has not done so.

Oh. So this is all normal stuff.  Like all governors do.  Right?

In the past, per diem claims by Alaska state officials have carried political risks. In 1988, the head of the state Commerce Department was pilloried for collecting a per diem charge of $50 while staying in his Anchorage home, according to local news accounts. The commissioner, the late Tony Smith, resigned amid a series of controversies.

“It was quite the little scandal,” said Tony Knowles, the Democratic governor from 1994 to 2000. “I gave a direction to all my commissioners if they were ever in their house, whether it was Juneau or elsewhere, they were not to get a per diem because, clearly, it is and it looks like a scam – you pay yourself to live at home,” he said.

Knowles, whose children were school-age at the start of his first term, said that his wife sometimes accompanied him to conferences overseas but that he could “count on one hand” the number of times his children accompanied him.

On and on the digging goes… Where it stops, nobody knows.  Now, I’m going to punch my time card, and go to bed.

ADN keeps getting scooped on every Palin story by a paper thousands of miles away. Including old stories that never made print in Alaska. Could it be ADN is just as oiled up as everything else in Alaska? We need a fourth estate in this state and it seems Mudflats is it!!!! Death dirge here for Alaska MSM.

At half past midnight and just knocking off work, I’m too tired to be clever and comment, but right on; this made me shake my head and laugh all the way to bed. Remember when Wally gold-plated everything in the guv’s mansion (I used the shiny toilet paper roll during Christmas open house); I wonder what the Palin “gilt” will be….

In my state, the Governor would be arrested for this behavior.

In fact, they censured the Governor here a few years ago for using a state-provided cell phone to make private calls and for using a state vehicle to make a private trip. Not big bills, but the principle…..

I wonder what Saracudy’s cell phone bill looks like and who pays it?

when the state pays for everything…it sure is easy to balance parenthood and public service…aint it

of course, this will be spun by the mccain campaign….palin is already spinning it

here is a question for gibson to ask the gov on either thursday or friday nite

governor palin….it seems that during most of your two years in office, you felt the need to have your children travel with you at state expense…is it your intention to continue this policy into the white house?

and as a followup…will you continue to cc your husband on all national security matters, and insist that he sit in on all cabinet meetings?

..[ The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions ]..

Excuse me? Has anyone looked into exactly what these ‘official out-of-town missions’ are? What do you take kids to that falls into that category?? How many times has she done this and what are the exact circumstances for each trip?

And …

..[ her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife ]..

Has he been duly appointed/elected as a *fully qualified* representative of the Governor? In what area of expertise? Given his background, what ‘official business’ is he conducting?? Who else may have been far more qualified, yet passed over, to send Todd on these ventures .. if, in fact, those ventures were even justified.

I think the lid on Pandora’s Box has just creaked open a little more.

So Grimaldi and Vick from WaPo accessed and analyzed these records and wrote the story. Something the local press wouldn’t or couldn’t do. How many more gold nuggets of information are out there ready to be mined?

The relatively small dollar amount involved does not mitigate the fact that she padded her expense account. Most employees would be fired for doing that. We can add petty thief to her resume.

So ABC News is reporting this on its morning news program, but following it with the “state officials say this is not unusual” line. Teflon Sarah. I’m discouraged about whether any of these scandals are enough. Is this it? Nothing BIG out there?

If you go to adn.com and click on the reader-submitted gallery of photos of Sarah you’ll see her kids at various festivals and similar events. It seems to me this is official business and that it’s reasonable for her to bring her kids. It’s not reasonable for the state to pay.

In my state a few years ago a state legislator submitted per diem requests for meals on a few days the legislature wasn’t in session, and that was the end of his career

i live in los angeles

our da is about to be indicted for using public monies to repair his car (i think it was about 300 bux) and having city employees baby sit his kids

and we are one of the most liberal cities in california

yet alaska is so hellbent on getting sarah into the wh, that they will look the other way on what is an obvious abuse of the public trust?

will the msm demand to see records of how prior governors used their per diems?

will they compare this to say, governor sebillious of MO who also has school aged children?

oh wait….sarah is from a small town…she gets a pass

Gubernatorial spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Monday that Palin’s expenses are not unusual

Are these expenses “not unusual” because Sarah Palin was preceded by equally corrupt politicians in the governor’s mansion? genuine question – I don’t know Alaska politics well enough to know the answer.

As one who has traveled for the Federal government as a government contractor, I can tell you that I’d have lost my job had I taken (or sent) my hubby or my kids along on “official business” unless they were on the payroll. Aren’t there minimum age limits for kids working in Alaska??? Also, I had a job description that specifically identified my duties, the scope of my responsibilities and the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to do the job.

Methinks that perhaps Alaskans are so used to corrupt officials that they don’t see this as gaming the system. I can imagine that with all those Federal dollars flooding into the state and the payments to the residents, it’s pretty easy to turn a blind eye. Must be nice. As for the rest of us who are paying the bills, thanks, but no thanks. Enough! Abd that’s no lie.

Off topic but it needs to be said – when is the real dirt gonna get kicked up in Wasilla?

Randal David Ankeney is the Republican activist who was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a child with force. He was charged with six counts related to getting a 13-year-old girl stoned on pot and then having sex with her. Ankeny has also been accused of sexually assaulting another girl. Jim Bakker is the infamous televangelist who worked with Pat Robertson at Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting network. Sources at the time, and then later Jim himself, confirmed that he committed adultery with Jessica Hahn, and then used charitable donations to pay her hush money. Fellow televangelists have stated in the past that they believe he’s gay. Bakker was indicted on 23 federal charges of fraud, tax evasion, and racketeering.

Bob Barr is the Republican Congressman from Georgia who sponsored the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, saying “The flames of hedonism, the flames of narcissism, the flames of self-centered morality are licking at the very foundation of our society, the family unit.” He was married three times, and paid for his second wife’s abortion (she also suspected he was cheating on her). he failed to pay child support to the children of his first two wives and while married to his third and present wife and was photographed licking whipped cream off of strippers at his inaugural party.

Parker J. Bena was a Republican activist and a key player in the campaign to elect George W. Bush as President. Bena was charged and later pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and lying to the FBI. Bena reportedly told the feds that he had received an unsolicited e-mail containing pictures of children (some as young as three years old) performing various sexual acts, but agents learned that he had in fact voluntarily entered a number of child pornography websites and downloaded the images himself. This is said to have involved acts with children as young as 3 years old, on his home computer. Parker J. Bena was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and fined $18,000. Louis Beres is a past chairman of the Christian Coalition of Oregon. Three of his family members accuse him of molesting them as children, when they were pre-teens. In an Editor and Publisher article, in August 2006, Beres confessed to the accusations facing him. The Portland Mercury

John Bolton, President George W. Bush’s highly contested appointee ambassador to United Nations is suspected of forcing his former wife to be involved in unsavory group sex acts. Corroborated allegations that Mr. Bolton’s first wife, Christina Bolton, was forced to engage in group sex have not been refuted by the State Department despite inquires posed by Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt concerning the allegations. Mr. Flynt has obtained information from numerous sources that Mr. Bolton participated in paid visits to Plato’s Retreat, the popular swingers club that operated in New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Jim Bunn Congressman of Oregon: Many attribute the success Jim Bunn experienced in great part to support from the Christian Coalition. Congressman Jim Bunn won his congressional seat, and then sources say that he immediately ditched his wife, the mother of his five children, and married a staffer. Jim Bunn is said to have put his new wife on the state payroll for the unheard-of salary of $97,500, thereby becoming one of the biggest waste and spend conservatives from the state of Oregon. President of the United States George W. Bush, was accused in a criminal complaint and lawsuit of raping Margie Schoedinger, who later died in a questionable case of suicide. Bush was also accused by Tammy Phillips, a former stripper, who was quoted in the National Enquirer in 2000 saying she had an affair with Bush that had ended in 1999. Another serious question involves statements from the wife of Red Blount, whom Bush campaigned for, while possibly A.W.O.L from the Air National Guard at age 26. She stated that he was “all over their 14 year old daughter.” Multiple Sources

Neil Bush, brother or G. W. Bush, in a March 2003 divorce deposition, admitted repeatedly having sex with strange women who just showed up at his room while on an Asian business trip. Overshadowing the sex scandal at the time was a business scandal. Neal Bush keeps a low profile and is not seen in public very often. He also has questionable ties to the security of the World Trade Towers in the September 11th 2001 attacks on the United States. Source: Washington Post article

Ken Calvert, Congressman (R-California), has been called the champion of the Christian Coalition and its “family values.” But in reality, Ken Calvert was sued as an alimony “deadbeat dad” by his ex-wife who said, “We can’t forgive what occurred between the President and Lewinsky.” In 1993, Calvert was caught by police officers receiving oral sex from a prostitute. He attempted to flee the scene but apparently couldn’t move fast enough to get away from police, and was arrested.

Story continues below

Helen Chenoweth, Congresswoman (R-Id.). In 1995, Chenoweth had denied having an affair when asked about it by The Spokane Spokesman-Review. In 1998 she called (in a campaign ad) for Bill Clinton’s resignation saying, “I believe that personal conduct and integrity do matter”. Days later she admitted to a six-year adulterous affair with a married associate, but now she claims a pardon from a higher authority: “I’ve asked for God’s forgiveness, and I’ve received it,” she revealed.

Mark Foley, Republican Representative, Florida Sixteenth Congressional District. Resigned after trying to solicit sex from male congressional pages via an instant messenger program. The conversations included his asking a sixteen-year-old “stud” whether his penis was erect and requesting that he take out and measure his penis. The cover-up involved Republican House Majority Leader John Boehner, Ohio Eighth Congressional District and Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Illinois Fourteenth District.

Newt Gingrich, well established crusader against legislation that assists women and the poor, has married three times while spouting Christian values the entire time. Newt Gingrich’s campaign worker Anne Manning, admitted that she gave Newt oral sex while he was still married to his first wife, essentially placing Newt in the exact same position President Clinton had to endure when Gingrich and his cronies maintained their pressure over the Lewinski incident. Gingrish informed one wife he was filing for divorce while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer treatments. Salon article

Philip Giordano, the former Republican mayor of Waterbury, Connecticut was sentenced by a state court to serve 37 years for forcing two little girls to perform acts of oral sex on him in his Waterbury City Hall office. While investigating municipal corruption, the FBI discovered phone records and pictures of Giordano with a prostitute named Guitana Jones, as well as with her 10-year-old niece and her 8-year-old daughter. 37-years is a very long prison sentence, many said at the time that it still wasn’t enough. Source: NBC Article/Newsday Article

Rudy Giuliani, New York Mayor and Republican Presidential Candidate, is reported as having had an adulterous affair that failed to stay out of the public light. Groups also cite Giuliani for pocketing an $80,000 fee for speaking at a charity benefit for tsunami aid which raised only $60,000 for the victims themselves. Critics of Giuliani say there will be more revelations about his character and past as his presidential aspirations gain momentum.

Matthew Glavin, president and CEO of the Southeastern Legal Foundation, was a big player in the Clinton Impeachment proceedings, and he has spearheaded a good number of anti-homosexual jihads. He has been arrested multiple times for public indecency, sources report, one time it was for fondling the crotch of the police officer who was arresting him at a national park. Opponents say his actions were treated “with kid gloves” and therefore inadequate.

Neal Horsley is a political figure of the far right, and the author of a website devoted to his advocacy of militant pro-life, secessionist, and anti-gay views. He has called for the arrest of all homosexuals. He admitted on the Fox News Radio’s The Alan Colmes Show, that he’s had sex with mules. He put photographs on his Web site of naked men engaging in homosexual acts and a nude woman engaging in bestiality amid shots of grotesquely maimed fetuses. Drug dealer convicted of possession of hashish with intent to sell. He calls for “the establishment of a new government, one that can obey God’s plan for government.”

Lewis “Scooter” Libby is the former Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney who was convicted but recently exempted from having to serve his sentence by the President. In 1996, “Scooter” Libby published a novel containing bizarre sexual content, including bestiality and pedophilia. Other high level White House officials were said to have been involved in the book that Libby published.

Rush Limbaugh is the infamous talk show pundit and advocate of moral values who has been divorced three times. A staunch anti-drug crusader, Limbaugh is in reality, a 30-pill a day drug addict. He also takes questionable trips to locations where many western men travel to buy sex under shady circumstances. It was a return from one of those possibly sordid journeys when one of his drug arrests occurred. Limbaugh was returning from the Dominican Republic. The Rush Limbaugh sex tourism story could seriously lead to his downfall if any of the allegations were founded. “Turnabout is most certainly fair play,” is how one news agency worded it. Then there is the report of Rush’s use of Viagra while he was single. Sources: correntewire.com/The Smoking Gun.com

Jeff Miller, (R-Cleveland), Senate Republican Caucus Chairman in Tennessee and the sponsor of Tennessee’s Marriage Protection act. He was divorced in April 2005 because of an affair he was having with an office aid. Miller described the Tennessee Marriage Protection Act as a means of preserving the sanctity of marriage. He opposed an amendment, however, which stated that “Adultery is deemed to be a threat to the institution of marriage and contrary to public policy in Tennessee.”

Joseph M. McDade, 75, was issued a summons on a charge of exposure of his sexual organs, a misdemeanor that carries up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The longtime Pennsylvania Republican congressman who served for 36 years in the House and now works for a Washington lobbying firm, has been accused of exposing his private parts to two women at a beach resort on Sanibel Island. Bill O’Reilly is the highly controversial right-wing conservative talk show host on Fox News known for the “O’Reilly factor” and the “no spin zone.” O’Reilly is highly contested over his ability to polarize people along political lines. Bill O’Reilly has been sued for sexual harassment by his producer. The female Fox News producer named Andrea Mackris filed a lawsuit claiming that he subjected her to repeated instances of sexual harassment and spoke often, and explicitly, to her about phone sex, vibrators, threesomes, masturbation, the loss of his virginity, and sexual fantasies. He settled with the producer for an undisclosed amount of money.

Bob Packwood, Senator (R-Ore.) resigned in 1995 under a threat of public senate hearings related to 10 female ex-staffers accusing him of sexual harassment. A pro-choice Republican who often rallied for women’s rights, Packwood let down generations of supporters, and is a good example of the complexity of human nature, since he supported legislation to protect women’s rights during his 25 years in office while simultaneously making unwanted sexual advances toward many different women. In the end, 19 women testified to outrageous behavior which was mostly carried out when Packwood was drunk. The most damaging was the charge of a former staff woman who was only 17 years old at the time. Packwood might still have survived the challenge had he responded with his former talent for compromise, but he was defiant and confrontational, trying to bully his way through the situation and alienating even his friends, it is reported.

George Roche III, carried on a 19 year affair with his son’s wife, while serving as president of Hillsdale College, which “emphasizes the importance of the common moral truths that bind all Americans, while recognizing the importance of religion for the maintenance of a free society.” The scandal broke out in 1999 when the wife of George Roche IV, Lissa Jackson Roche, claimed to have had an affair spanning 19 years with her husband’s father. Shortly after, she was found dead in the college’s arboretum with a handgun, and the death was ruled a suicide. Following his resignation in November 1999, Roche left public life and moved to Colorado.

Joe Scarborough, former Republican Congressman, is currently a conservative talk show host. He resigned his congressional seat abruptly to spend more time with his family, amidst allegations of an affair. His intern, Lori Klausutis, was soon after found dead in his office. The medical examiner, who had his license revoked in Missouri for falsifying information in an autopsy report, and suspended in Florida for six years, ruled the case an accident, after giving conflicting information about her injuries. He said he lied about them because “The last thing we wanted was 40 questions about a head injury.”

Ed Schrock was a two-term Republican Congressman, with a 92% approval rating from the Christian Coalition. Co-sponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment, consistently opposed gay rights. Married, with wife and kids, he withdrew his candidacy for a third term after tapes of him soliciting gay sex were circulated. The Virginia Pilot reported in October 2000 that Schrock favored ending the Clinton administration’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military, BlogActive noted. “He supports asking enlistees whether they have had homosexual experiences in an effort to try to keep gays from serving. ‘You’re in the showers with them, you’re in the bunk room with them, you’re in staterooms with them,’ Schrock said.”

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, right wing conservative radio host, is known for promoting family values. She is estranged from her mother, opposes birth control, has had her tubes tied. She espouses saving oneself for marriage, and admits to having had sex before she was married. She opposes adultery, but has committed adultery while she was married, and has slept with a married man. She opposes divorce, but she is divorced and remarried, and has posed for nude photos which are available online.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the hit Hollywood movie actor turned politician and California Republican governor, has admitted during a Oui interview, having sex with a 16-year old when he was 28. Today men who commit similar acts in Oregon are branded sex offenders and placed in correctional facilities. At the time of the Oui story, Schwarzenegger, then 29, was appearing in “Pumping Iron,” a documentary on the bodybuilding circuit. In the Q&A with Manso from Oui Magazine, today’s California Governor spoke about his sex life then, his drug usage, and his belief that men “shouldn’t feel like fags just because they want to have nice-looking bodies.” Source: Oui

Jean Schmidt is a Republican legislator from Ohio. Though not herself implicated, she employed a campaign manager named Joe Brauns in her 2005 election who once wrote an article condemning gay men for running sex ad profiles, and who was then accused of running his own sex profile on Collarme, an S&M sex site. The profile called for “submissives” to wear only a collar and handcuffs and to have hot wax dripped on them. Source: DKOS Diary

Jimmy Swaggart, televangelist, exposed in 1986 fellow Assemblies of God minister Marvin Gorman, who was having an affair with one of his parishioners. The following year, Swaggart then exposed Jim Bakker’s sexual indiscretions and soon after appeared on the Larry King Show stating that Bakker was a “cancer in the body of Christ.” As a retaliatory move, Marvin Gorman hired a private-detective to follow Swaggart. During his investigation, the detective found Swaggart in a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana motel on Airline Highway with prostitute Debra Murphree and took pictures as proof of the tryst.Source: Wikipedia

Randall Terry, Right to Life activist, founder of Operation Rescue, was involved in the Terri Schiavo protests. He was once imprisoned for sending former President Bill Clinton an aborted fetus. His son Jamiel is gay; his daughter Tila had sex outside of marriage, became pregnant, had a miscarriage – she is no longer welcome in his home; his daughter Ebony had 2 children outside of wedlock and became Muslim. He has campaigned against infidelity and birth control, gays and unwed mothers. Terry himself was censured by his church after committing adultery.

Strom Thurmond was an outspoken southern republican senator and racist. According to information revealed toward the end of his life, he had as a younger man raped and impregnanted a 15-year old African American maid. Throughout his adult life, as a politician and U.S. Senator, Thurmond quietly contributed to the family of the young African-American mother of his child. In contrast to, say, George “I Was Wrong” Wallace, Thurmond had always been an ornery redemption project. He did not repent. Even so, his illegitimate daughter further complicated the moral picture. Jim West, Spokane Mayor, supported a bill which failed, would have barred gays and lesbians from working in schools, day-care centers and some state agencies. He voted to bar the state from distributing pamphlets telling people how to protect themselves from AIDS. He proposed that “any touching of the sexual or other intimate parts of a person” among teens be criminalized. He ended up having a sexual affair with an 18-year old boy. Source: Spokesman review

Larry Flynt taking John Bolton to task? Political leaders funded by the Christian Coalition watching their lives and political ambitions end in disgrace? I know people won’t change their views over this article, that would be too much to expect, but I have a feeling some of this information, much of which is not discussed in many circles, is important to share. Major hangups over sex do not seem to get people very far, at least in the end, and it is obvious that many of the stated motivations of these individuals are the exact opposite of what lurks in their hearts.

“State officials say this is not unusual.” The “state official” is one of Palin’s employees, of course. What a cesspool Alaska politics is.

Buried at the end of the rather long article is the fact that it was also Palin’s chief of staff who told her it was okay, but who told a dem governor it was NOT okay.

Regardless of corrupt Alaskan practices, I wonder what the IRS will think of paying yourself to stay at home (then deleting references to “home” after the fact).

My husband works for the State of Tennessee. When employees are reimbursed for travel on state business they have to show receipts from gas stations and hotels – no one would take someone’s word on that. No one could get away with staying home and charging the state for “travel.” I’m sure that’s the case in most states.

I would like to welcome SP to reality. I’m sure she isn’t accustomed to people asking to see her financial records as governor. But you can only get away with stuff for so long.

The irony is it’s really not in the Democratic parties best interest to get her to resign. They’ll stick in a heavy weight, everyone will breathe a sigh of relief and they earned a ton of money prostituting Palin’s notoriety. But it’s in the country’s best interest to get her as far from the VP slot as possible. I’d rather see four more years of McCain/and an informed, educated VP than give this woman even a chance at the White House.

It would make sense to me to carry Bristol on their medical insurance policy as a dependent…if she marries before the baby is born it would be on Bristol’s dime. Or on ours!

Harley – no need to worry about adding to her ratings unless you’re a Nielsen family. I was for two years, and I knew that the most important thing I did all day was choose what to watch. There are not very many people in the ratings and they have an enormous influence on what we watch and what advertisers pay, and how opinion is shaped.

Goodness! Mrs. Palin sounds exactly like some old-time politician instead of some new type of reformer! I think that she could move to Texas and be welcomed with open arms. She’d fit right in there.

Mika Brzezinski was just asking this morning “what’s wrong with her having been for the bridge before she was against it? She got more information and then realized after she was elected it wasn’t a good thing to do.” sigh

The key here is that she decided it wasn’t a good idea when she learned we’d have to pay too much. It WAS a good idea if federal money (from the lower 48) would pay for it. So, she said ‘nevermind’ only then. If Stevens & Young had pulled it off, we’d have the bridge. No question.

No, Regi,

The irony is that Ms. Palin was the best choice they had for a “reformer” that fits McCain’s attempted meme of wresting “change” from Obama. Turns out, she is nothing of the kind.

And I doubt if she will resign. McCain ( and Mrs. Palin) appear to both be too stubborn to allow that to happen.

That’s why Obama needs to stop saying “she was for it before she was against it.”

That just sounds like she eventually made the right decision.

The reality is that “she was for it until she had to pay for it.”

Its ok lemonfair, i still just can not bear to listen to that shrill twang of hers.
It literally makes me have palpitations. I have no desire to allow her to make me feel that bad. I do realize that I control my emotions, not Sarah Palin or any other individual, but the problem is exactly that, she sends me into a tizzy.
The thought that my daughter’s very life and that my grandson’s life
depends upon this election and that this ” thing from hell ” could potentially
have direct and dire influence upon them scares the hell out of me.

I simply can not watch her.

I simply am getting to the point where I can no longer bear to watch my
American brothers and sisters be so easily swayed and obviously racist.

I had believed we come farther than we obviously have.

I had believed we had learned our lessons from GWB.

I had believed in the goodness and intelligence of America.

I am a white, 53 year old Christian lady who believed America stood for
equality. I know it took a long time to get there, but I believed
that the best part of us was actually shining through.

I see now that I may have had a very stupid viewpoint.

My entire belief system is somehow shaken this morning.

Yes, I am afraid. Believe it or not I am not afraid of McCain / Palin
winning this election.

I am very afraid of what it says about America if they do however.

America will NEVER recover if this pair wins this election.

America will NEVER recover if God Forbid this woman becomes President.

I am simply saddened beyond belief this morning. What has transpired over the last 11 days suddenly became clear to me when I woke up.

And when that realization hit me, it made me literally cry.

Now, now, don’t rub it in! I know I’m living in a red state in the Bible Belt! I have hope that someday we may become another Virginia.

We have a second term, Democratic Governor. :) Phil Bredesen. He’s very popular.

The main problem with Al Gore is that he didn’t campaign much here in Tennessee, but left it up to Tipper and others. That was a big mistake – he took Tennessee for granted. John Kerry didn’t campaign much here either, if at all.

Obama should come to Tennessee, and so should Biden. I’m sure people like Harold Ford Jr. are telling them that. Please!

In the Primaries, most of the rural parts of TN went to Hillary, so you can gather that there are similarities to West Virginia and Pennsylvania – Appalachian States. However, my own county w/Chattanooga went for Obama, as did Nashville and Memphis. That is partially due to the black vote, but not completely (I’m not African American myself).

Believe me though, there are plenty of Democrats in Tennessee, especially in Middle and West Tennessee. One of the debates is going to be in Nashville, and I’m sure there will be just as many pro-Bama people as Republicans.

Think about the millions of state employees in this country, who are all too well acquainted with the headache of filling out maze-like, cut and dried reimbursement forms for mileage, expenses, etc. Do you think THEY are going to buy Palin’s baloney story about her per diems and travel expenses for her husband and children? It’s outrageous.

Just goes to show how much she considered herself the Empress of Alaska — where no one else was going to scrutinize her too closely, in a state awash with money.

Maybe it will be something as simple as this that takes her out of the race. When it comes to circumventing state rules and regulations about expenses, there’s not much room for creative interpretation. When you try to game the system, you’re out.

Good op-ed piece by Juan Cole (must-read website for Middle East affairs juancole.com ….

Full op-ed on Salon

Opening para:

John McCain announced that he was running for president to confront the “transcendent challenge” of the 21st century, “radical Islamic extremism,” contrasting it with “stability, tolerance and democracy.” But the values of his handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers. On censorship, the teaching of creationism in schools, reproductive rights, attributing government policy to God’s will and climate change, Palin agrees with Hamas and Saudi Arabia rather than supporting tolerance and democratic precepts. What is the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick.

Harley – you and I are of the same generation, and I cannot remember another time since I’ve voted where the stakes are higher.

The key is WE HAVE TO STAY POSITIVE & ON THE OFFENSE. “Ask not what this Country can do for you; Ask what YOU can do for this Country.” (JFK)

The Republican Party is utilizing its typical, non-topic emotional tactics. I, too, would have thought by NOW Americans would have had enough. The Republicans are smart. They appeal to the very core of one’s being: his/her FAITH. Let’s face it. No one likes to believe they are worshipping the “wrong” Faith. I keep vacillating on whether we should take to the streets or not. It appears the only time true social change takes effect is when the pain gets so bad for the masses that the resistance to change has to fold. Is this the time? One way or other, I think we are in for some turbulent times ahead.

I am voting for the preservation of the Consitution and Bill of Rights this year. I am voting for what our Founding Fathers stood for and they had to face down much more than we did: no budget, enemies on every side, trying to keep the grassroots campaign alive. . . we CAN DO IT if we do not allow the goons to scare us out of it.

I say this election is ours to lose. There is too much at stake and you’re right – if this election goes McCain, our lives will most likely be much different four years from now, and not for the better.

Keep the faith. Talk the issues, not the person. Ask people what it means to them to be an American.

When Palin said she is a “reformer” maybe she meant she went to Reform School?

You know how she “embellishes” her “accomplishments.” If she once had a nice fingernail, it would turn into “I had the most beautiful fingernails in the State of Alaska, and that’s why I’m qualified to be VP!”

I’m right with you on the generation thing.

Obama doesn’t need to go to Tennessee and probably won’t. Nate Silver over at http://www.fivethirtyeight.com has Obama with a 1% (one) chance of winning TN, even though he gives him 292 electoral votes at the moment. So I sympathize with what it must be like to live in a state that will vote for McCain this fall. I live in a state that will vote for Obama.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com is the definitive site for accurate state by state projections. You could spend a day in between mudflats posts perusing the site. Nate Silver (whose day job is with baseball prospectus – he invented PECOTA for those who know that stat) weighs different polls differently depending on how they handle the demographics, and their history for accuracy, and how recently they were taken. He has some very interesting stuff in the last 2 or three days. Gives commentary.

http://www.pollster.com is probably the second most accurate, and it’s more user friendly. It’s also a poll of polls, and was the standard for excellence before Nate Silver put up 538. It has a map you can move your cursor over and see the polls for each state.

http://www.electoral-vote.com is probably the third most accurate, (probably less accurate because I think they rely on just the last poll. But sometimes that means they’ll catch a switch before the other two sites will). similar map to pollster. Lots of great links – catch the political humor link.

All 3 sites also cover senatorial races.

Obama’s numbers have gone down some in the last 4 or 5 days, but Nate, especially, has some perspective on that that will keep you from tearing out your hair. He’s an Obama supporter BTW, which may affect his analysis but not his numbers.

Governor Rendell was right. Any Governor, (outside of Alaska) would have been impeached a long time ago, for the shennanigans pulled by Sarah Palin.

If you don’t want to live in Juneau, why run for Governor? Why have an “official” residence”?

I cannot imagine a Governor living anywhere but the “official residence.” I also cannot imagine a Governor billing the state to stay at home.

In the case of this Governor – impeachment should definitely be “on the table.”

She’s fleecing the taxpayers of Alaska – bigtime. She shouldn’t get away with it.

Regi (03:37:15) :

I’ve heard FactCheck.com, it’s .org but the media’s really very stupid, mentioned twice already this AM. Isn’t that interesting? A sensationalistic, attention grabbing title PALIN SLIMED for a post full of mixed messages and false rumors that weren’t even rumors, and suddenly Factcheck is the new media darling. Like I said Cheney supported the site years ago, it’s probably a conservative sleeper. Where’s the PALIN LIES post?

Factcheck.org is non-partisan and part of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. To be fair to them, they seem to use “slime” as a technical term—if you look down the page you will see that they also cover “sliming” of Obama. Of course, that leaves open the very real question of whether the “sliming” of Palin and Obama are at all at the same level, and the discussion of Palin’s involvement with the AIP is, I think, misleading in simply accepting her claim that she had little to do with the party. In this respect, the general approach of factcheck.org seems to be rather like the MSM in general. Actually, I’m tempted to say that they represent something like the consensus position of the MSM vis-a-vis what constitutes the “facts.”

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/09/09/palin_fundamentalist/

As you guys know, I don’t normally send these out, but I have to tell you I am
increasingly concerned by the lack of talking the issues on both sides. I am
voting for the preservation of my Constitution and the Bill of Rights this year. As you all know (and I got quite a bit of grief from many of you!!), I was a Huckabee supporter, but I cannot support McCain/Palin. They are just
too extremist for me. I cannot, in good faith, leave our great Country to (name of my son) in this state. He is the future generation and we are asking his generation to carry our debt, to fight in wars that are NOT “holy,” and to be more and more isolationist. We are making the world MORE unsafe for our
beautiful children, not less.

Per the Constitution comment, and please remember I’m an Independent with no party affiliation:

1) Bush and McCain (sponsor of the bills) have tried to ammend the Constitution seven times – MORE TIMES THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN OUR 200 YEAR HISTORY. MORE THAN LINCOLN, ROOSEVELT, TRUMAN. . . I can’t stand for that. . . Great Presidents who had to face down more than we are today.
2) McCain’s bill to shoot down Habeas Corpus (the right to a fair and speedy
trial, etc) was couched in the spirit of “catching our terrorists.” This actually went before the Supreme Court, which you know has nominees from both parties. The Supreme Court ruled what was being asked in McCain’s bill was “…patently unconstitutional.” The Supreme Court quoted one of our founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton and his Federalist Paper 84 in stating that this would “…be the most base form of tyranny.” Finally, the Supreme Court even stated this bill would take us back to before the signing of the Magna Carta. . . which should cause shivers up your spine that a U.S. Senator would ask for this.
3) On September 28th, the McCain Far Right is going to preach from the
fundalmentalist church’s pulpit that we start abolishing church and state. They are going to couch it as: “…the State should not tell a Church what it can and cannot say from the pulpit…” to which I agree on matters of faith, but not on matters of politics. They are going to state that the Christian faith has been under attack in America for years. I went to their website and openly read what Dr. Dobson and others wrote. The truth is that we have had Christian Presidents in our White House since the beginning. Ronald Reagan ushered in the Right Wing, and they have enjoyed over 30 years of influence and power. Thomas Jefferson in 1802 received a letter from the Danbuy Baptist Church. the Church was concerned about its potential discrimination from the state based on its belief. . . THIS IS PRECISELY WHAT LED TO THE FIRST AMMENDMENT OF OUR GREAT BILL OF RIGHTS. No one is telling anyone in our country what they can and cannot worship. It is what makes our Country great, and it is how we remember what our forefathers did for us as they escaped Religious Persecution from their mother lands. Do we want to do the same today? As you all know, I am a Christian. I’m a pretty loud Christian, and am proud that (name of my son) gets up, goes to Church and wants to serve. I love my Lord with all my heart. However, I BELIEVE in separation of church and state as I believe each of us have the RIGHT AS AMERICANS to worship as we see fit. I don’t want this right taken away.

Please read and watch with an open mind. It is hard for me (and I know many of us) because neither candidate is our pick this year. But I cannot tolerate another 4 years of this economy, the war is not a “holy” war, and we need to come together and figure out how to get our economy back on the right path. McCain has voted with the current administration the vast majority of the time (at least 90%, and 95% by some counts). Do you want more of the same?

(Name of son) is all I have. I want to leave this Country where it remains the land of opportunity, of freedom, and where one can achieve whatever they want if they work hard enough.

Thank you for letting me speak my mind. Please feel free to continue the dialogue and let’s agree to disagree so we can go to the Polls on November 4th armed with FACTS. I’m asking you to stop for a moment, let go of the bantering, media bashing, off-topic soundbites, and think about what we are really voting FOR in this election. What will it mean to be an American in January 2009?

Love you guys!

On a somewhat lighter note, here’s a governor who knows how to sell a state-owned airplane!

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_stories/20080909_Rendell__unlike_Palin__shuns_eBay_.html

The story, in part: “Palin, the governor of Alaska, tried to win points as a reformer by declaring at last week’s GOP convention that upon taking office, she put her state’s jet on eBay. Turns out, she did just that, but in the end, it was sold through a broker for $2.1 million – less than the $2.7 million that Alaskan taxpayers paid for it under a past administration.

“It just goes to prove that a high-flying but inexperienced politician is no match for a down-to-earth professional when it comes to selling state planes,” said Chuck Ardo, Gov. Rendell’s press secretary.

Unlike Palin, state officials in Harrisburg chose not to bother with the online auction route after Rendell decided in April to sell the plane, a 1981 Beech King Air 200, in a cost-cutting move.

The state wanted to avoid eBay’s commission – upward of 2 ½ percent of the sale price – so it instead advertised the plane on two aeronautical Web sites. The total cost: less than $700. It drew four bids, with the highest coming from Midwest Underground Inc., an East Moline, Ill. pipeline contractor.”

Lynn Westmoreland Needs His Diaper Changed
by T Kyle King on Apr 18, 2008 10:32 PM EDT in Football

We interrupt the start of another weekend of S.E.C. baseball action to bring you the following breaking news from Washington, D.C.:

U.S. Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is a whiny bedwetting crybaby and somebody needs to shove a pacifier in his mouth before he speaks in public again.

More in favor of Obama/Biden…save the taxpayers money! Less schleppage of family members!

David Brooks writing in the NYT today about how this election is about, as I believe Denise Levertov said, ‘the zoo of the new.’ Not ideas, not policy, not the cratering economy, not the fact that McCain is claiming the mantle of change only rhetorically. So basically, our country is so stupid and has such a short attention span that we will vote for the candidate with the newest lines and the most current media exposure.

Brooks irritates me but I always learn something when I read his columns, so…Gov. Palin is the ‘zoo of the new,’ but we have to get out in front in pointing out that the whole thing is a sham, a ‘Trojan moose,’ as Arianna Huffington says.

How can someone go to a convention and just say they are an agent of change and then that makes it so? I guess there are some of us who prefer to exist in the non-reality-based community.

I was wondering how Vanity Fair will treat the whole thing. They are always on top of the celebrity culture angle, so Palin is definitely cover material. However, VF is on the side of the forces of light and Graydon Carter is a fierce critic of the Bushies. Let’s see how they handle it, it’s a fine line between giving publicity at the newsstand and realizing that the writing will be preaching to choir, anyway. But an in-depth profile will let the facts speak for themselves.

McCain/Palin are campaigning in South Central PA today, definitely a battleground state. My father-in-law grew up in Pittsburgh and says PA will be very important, but unfortunately there are many who will never vote for Obama because he’s black. I think the key is to get the younger voters out and energized.

Read Bob Herbert’s column in the NYT today, for energy.

I went away for a few minutes. I really and truly was very upset.
I worked on updating an FTP Tutorial for my help site.
It took the events that are unfolding off my mind.
It also did not take me long unfortunately, but at least it calmed me down.
I have to tell every one of you beautiful people, I usually am not an emotional person. I also am intelligent enough to understand that internet friends are not the same as real life friends.
I have found ” real life ” friends here.
You guys have made my day and lifted my spirits.
I thank you all for that.
Except for my husband, my entire family is still living in the United States.
I have never missed them more that I did this morning since marrying and moving to Canada. This is the first time I have ever been homesick.

I wouldn’t guess that the Obama campaign is clueless about the Palin threat. It has been an extraordinary, unflappable campaign so far and they do seem to know what they are doing.

Over the weekend I was hearing that hoards of reporters were just getting settled in Alaska. So there could be some hard news about Palin soon. McCain and Palin are campaigning together these days, perhaps to give Palin some cover from the media.

Biden, meanwhile, is appearing everywhere and is doing a terrific job of pushing back on the issues.

I think the trick is to expose the lies of McCain-Palin without making it look like a liberal media pile-on. Unfortunately, in this culture, lies travel a lot faster and further than the truth. Most people spend too little time trying to sort out the facts and go with whatever sounds good to them at the moment.

I do think it is interesting that Obama turned down Hillary Clinton as VP choice, partly because of some potential controversy over things like Bill Clinton’s speaking engagements. Meanwhile McCain takes on this women with a 747 full of baggage and just bluffs his way through it all.

I’m thinking we could end up with our own Isabel (not Eva) Peron as president.

I don’t think he’s too nice Proud2BUSA, I think he is too smart and cerebral and just what America needs.

Unfortunately, in our opinion driven culture with our 24/7 news cycle we need someone to do a BIG smackdown to McCain and Palin and soon.

It would be ideal if it could come from the Republicans for Obama, because that would probably have some impact and would leave Obama above the fray.

westmoreland is the stupid rep from Ga who called Obama “uppity”…\

On September 4, 2008, Westmoreland described Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as “uppity,” a word historically used to insult African-Americans who have made economic, social, or political progress.[6] He told reporters: “Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Senator Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said. Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”[7][8]

The ensuing media attention compelled Rep. Westmoreland, who was raised in a Georgia suburb in the days of Jim Crow, to issue the following statement: “I’ve never heard that term used in a racially derogatory sense. It is important to note that the dictionary definition of ‘uppity’ is ‘affecting an air of inflated self-esteem — snobbish.’ That’s what we meant by uppity when we used it in the mill village where I grew up.”[6]

In response to Westmoreland’s comment, social commentator and comic Stephen Colbert referred to Westmoreland as a “stupid cracker” on his show The Colbert Report on September 5, 2008. In the same show, in an update of a “Better Know a District” segment, Westmoreland admitted to Colbert that in the “do-nothing Congress” he was the “do-nothingest” Republican, that he voted against providing relief to Hurricane Katrina victims, and that he advocates eliminating the United States Department of Education.[9]

or something like this:

Koch backs Obama, calls Palin ’scary’

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch, who endorsed and worked for George W. Bush in 2004, is endorsing Obama today, NY1 first reported.

I asked Koch just now what prompted the move.

“The designation of Palin to be vice president,” he said. “She’s scary.”

He said he was alarmed by the report that she’d triggered a conflict with the local librarian in Wasilla, Alaska by inquiring about the possibility of banning books.

“Any time someone goes to the library and says, ‘I want to ban books,’ and the librarian says ‘no,’ and she threatens to fire them — that’s scary,” he said.

(Palin at the time said she was just inquiring about the library’s policy on banning books, with no aim of actually banning any. “It was a rhetorical quesiton — nothing more,” the McCain-Palin campaign said in a memo yesterday. And no books were banned, the town says.)

In an endorsement statement, Koch wrote that “the issue for me is who will best protect and defend America” and that both parties were strong on terrorism.

I have concluded that the country is safer in the hands of Barack Obama, leader of the Democratic Party and protector of the philosophy of that party. Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, e.g., national health insurance, the right of abortion, the continuation of Social Security, gay rights, other rights of privacy, fair progressive taxation and a host of other needs and rights.

If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would scare me if she were to succeed John McCain in the presidency.

Koch said he’d visited six states for Bush in 2004, primarily Florida, but also several others. (“Why they sent me to Iowa, I don’t know.”) He said he’d be happy to campaign for Obama “if they ask me to.”

Koch is a member of a set of secular, swing-voting Jewish Democrats who may have been pushed away by the selection of Palin, and his endorsement may be a marker of an opportunity for Obama to strengthen his campaign among older Jewish voters in Florida.

plwalsh (06:01:02) :

Obama is down about 20 votes in the electoral count. Ohio, incredibly, is trending strongly Republican. The McCain campaign is sounding snarky again— claiming that all the negative things about Palin in the media are just sliming.

Well thanks to FactChecks “sliming’ post with it’s “since the librarian did’t ban books and fought for her job back” Palin is innocent, and their manufactured rumors like “Palin for Buchanan” as if Palin was for Hitler, like WHO GIVES A SHIT??? I’m new here – from Connecticut. Great Blog! re: the bridge to nowhere: I just read a comment here about how Palin should be characterized as “being for it until she had to pay for it” rather than “being for it until she was against it.” Didn’t she say in her very first speech that she told the Congress thanks but no thanks, if they (Alaskans) wanted a bridge they would build it themselves (and presumably pay for it themselves)? Her public statement is very disingenuous given that her initial stance was that they did want the bridge and didn’t want to pay for it themselves. “Being for it until she had to pay for it” is much more apt and reveals the hypocrisy of her current public statements and policies. I think the Obama people should pick this up and use it.

Someone asked what Obama was doing today. From firstread: Obama holds a town hall on education in Lebanon, VA. And Biden is in Missouri, stumping in Columbia and St. Louis.

I think the media focusing solely on Palin and McCain will not have the effect that McCain hopes. People will get tired of it and turn it off. It is similar to the breaking news story they run all day as current breaking news. Nothing in the story ever changes but they keep on showing it all day as breaking news. Which is misleading. Especially if that story first occurred at 7 in the morning and they are saying it is still a breaking news story at 7 p.m.

By the way, I also have a rant about this Lou Dobbs Independent movement.

Dobbs and other independents promote this idea of politics as a kind of consumerism. If you don’t like the product the politicians are turning out, run down to Wal-Mart and pick up a new government.

This is just not the way the country was supposed to work.

I think the most important words in the Constitution are the first three: “We the People.” Not “we the professional politicians, we the two-party system, we the special interests, we the lobbyists, we who watch politics from the couch and winge about it.”

In other words, what makes the country work is everyone getting involved.

The Republicans have been playing right into this consumer model of government. Hire us, they say, and we’ll cut your taxes, make you safe, keep the government out of your business, create jobs, fly the flag. You won’t have to do a thing— just sit back and enjoy and, oh, do some shopping.

If this goes on, we will have to pass “truth in advertising” legislation for political campaigns. If the Republican Party was a make of car, would anyone be buying it if they were held to the facts?

I guess I am coming out swinging this morning, because I just hung up from one of my die-hold Republican friends (and thank goodness, we can still remain friends) – but we started talking about all of this (the good news is that people ARE talking), and I just finally blurted out:

“…you know, I’ve been praying for those poor starving children in Darfur, for those women and children who are being hacked to death in Africa, for bin Laden and his followers hearts to soften, for the Iraqi people to have a day without fear…I haven’t been praying for that pipeline….geez! I must have been praying for the wrong things!! Who KNEW that God was more interested in having oil pipeline laid than helping the meek, the poor, and the widowed? Who KNEW?”

I would love for one of these organizations to say occasionally “we just don’t know which story is true— there are some facts on both sides” or “the facts don’t all add up, but the general impression we get is that this is a pretty conservative candidate with some family issues” or “your guess is as good as ours on this one.”

Go Ed Koch and Ed Rendell! I am glad Koch finally said something, he holds a lot of sway in the Jewish community. He lives in my in-laws’ building, no joke.

Even entertaining the QUESTION of banning books is SCARY, no doubt. What is this, the Dark Ages? A return to the feudalism system? Crikey!

And Ed Rendell, he was a great mayor for Philly, and now a great gov. Let’s get Obama’s sound bites to match his.

That video of McCain’s ‘lifetime of war’ is chilling…there is no other word. No one argues that there are never conflicts in the world, it’s how you handle them that is the issue. If you haven’t watched it, do so and see if you cry, like I just did. I am not kidding.

Here’s Herbert’s article, the comments are just as interesting.

Have a good day, everyone! Working those phones over the next few days.

Hold Your Heads Up

By BOB HERBERT

Ignorance must really be bliss. How else, over so many years, could the G.O.P. get away with ridiculing all things liberal?

Troglodytes on the right are no respecters of reality. They say the most absurd things and hardly anyone calls them on it. Evolution? Don’t you believe it. Global warming? A figment of the liberal imagination.

Liberals have been so cowed by the pummeling they’ve taken from the right that they’ve tried to shed their own identity, calling themselves everything but liberal and hoping to pass conservative muster by presenting themselves as hyper-religious and lifelong lovers of rifles, handguns, whatever.

So there was Hillary Clinton, of all people, sponsoring legislation to ban flag-burning; and Barack Obama, who once opposed the death penalty, morphing into someone who not only supports it, but supports it in cases that don’t even involve a homicide.

Anyway, the Republicans were back at it last week at their convention. Mitt Romney wasn’t content to insist that he personally knows that “liberals don’t have a clue.” He complained loudly that the federal government right now is too liberal.

“We need change, all right,” he said. “Change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.”

Why liberals don’t stand up to this garbage, I don’t know. Without the extraordinary contribution of liberals — from the mightiest presidents to the most unheralded protesters and organizers — the United States would be a much, much worse place than it is today.

There would be absolutely no chance that a Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin could make a credible run for the highest offices in the land. Conservatives would never have allowed it.

Civil rights? Women’s rights? Liberals went to the mat for them time and again against ugly, vicious and sometimes murderous opposition. They should be forever proud.

The liberals who didn’t have a clue gave us Social Security and unemployment insurance, both of which were contained in the original Social Security Act. Most conservatives despised the very idea of this assistance to struggling Americans. Republicans hated Social Security, but most were afraid to give full throat to their opposition in public at the height of the Depression.

“In the procedural motions that preceded final passage,” wrote historian Jean Edward Smith in his biography, “FDR,” “House Republicans voted almost unanimously against Social Security. But when the final up-or-down vote came on April 19 [1935], fewer than half were prepared to go on record against.”

Liberals who didn’t have a clue gave us Medicare and Medicaid. Quick, how many of you (or your loved ones) are benefiting mightily from these programs, even as we speak. The idea that Republicans are proud of Ronald Reagan, who saw Medicare as “the advance wave of socialism,” while Democrats are ashamed of Lyndon Johnson, whose legislative genius made this wonderful, life-saving concept real, is insane.

When Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law in the presence of Harry Truman in 1965, he said: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine.”

Reagan, on the other hand, according to Johnson biographer Robert Dallek, “predicted that Medicare would compel Americans to spend their ‘sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was like in America when men were free.’ ”

Scary.

Without the many great and noble deeds of liberals over the past six or seven decades, America would hardly be recognizable to today’s young people. Liberals (including liberal Republicans, who have since been mostly drummed out of the party) ended legalized racial segregation and gender discrimination.

Humiliation imposed by custom and enforced by government had been the order of the day for blacks and women before men and women of good will and liberal persuasion stepped up their long (and not yet ended) campaign to change things. Liberals gave this country Head Start and legal services and the food stamp program. They fought for cleaner air (there was a time when you could barely see Los Angeles) and cleaner water (there were rivers in America that actually caught fire).

Liberals. Your food is safer because of them, and so are your children’s clothing and toys. Your workplace is safer. Your ability (or that of your children or grandchildren) to go to college is manifestly easier.

It would take volumes to adequately cover the enhancements to the quality of American lives and the greatness of American society that have been wrought by people whose politics were unabashedly liberal. It is a track record that deserves to be celebrated, not ridiculed or scorned.

Self-hatred is a terrible thing. Just ask that arch-conservative Clarence Thomas.

Liberals need to get over it.

Yes, this is exactly what I am staying.

Whether or not Palin actually had a list of books she wanted to ban, it seems pretty clear that she pressured the librarian and did actually fire her for not being a team player. No one has gotten the librarian’s story or been able to question Palin about it, so presenting anything about this episode as “fact” is a bit of a stretch.

Ditto on the AIP. Even if she wasn’t a member, she was clearly sympathetic to it. It is also pretty significant that the party is claiming her as one of their own. So there is a real pattern here that this kind of “fact checking” actually obscures.

As a historian, I was always taught that facts were potentially the biggest enemies of the truth.

The Bush administration knowingly misrepresented the truth to the American public about WMD’s in Iraq. (they lied)

That’s what disturbs me the most about McCain and Palin. Obama stated that how McCain and Palin run their campaign will determine how they will run the Whitehouse in governing America.

McCain, Palin, and their entire staff CONSISTANTLY LIE, MISLEAD, DISTORT THE FACTS!!!! THAT IS EXACTLY HOW THEY WILL GOVERN!

This is indeed getting frightening to realize just how easily Americans have been sucked into the Palin aura and almost steadfastly refused to acknowledge the wealth of disturbing information on her is out there. McCain is no longer at the top of the ticket…she is. Will the public tire of her in the next 55 days? Not on your life. And unless something truly scathing is revealed she will continue to ride this huge and growing wave of popularity. There really won’t be a need to have her ‘meet the press’. Those who support her don’t need to hear her answers, they’ve already made up their minds.

I think the Obama/Biden campaign is doing the most logical thing they can….voter registration. My fervent hope is that the demographic which normally doesnt vote at all 18-35 is out there in record numbers in November. My hope is that the growing Hispanic demographic which gave Bush a significant bump will mobilize for Obama.

I’m going to do my best to get that vote out. This is THE most important election our nation will ever face.

WTF is Todd Palin doing all up in the government of Alaska, was he elected, appointed, annointed, or otherwise brought in. He seems to be in on an awful lot of government business. Most political spouses are just arm candy for the re-election bids, I think he is wielding a great deal of backroom power, maybe we should all be asking about him as well, as he seems to be the shadow governor.

I have lived in Vancouver, Regina, Saskatoon, Kelowna,

My husband is Canadian.
If anyone is truly interested in moving to Canada, it is far easier
to move here than it is to move to the U.S.
Not that its a breeze, but it can be done.
Canada is much more open minded than the US about allowing people to
live here. You still have to jump through the legal hoops, and it does require
a certain amount of cash, but its a very nice place to live.
Even though we were married, I still had to go through the immigration process and still had to pay the fees. It was more of a pain in the ass than it legally challenging however. OMG, the paperwork and the documentation and the questions !
Things you will need:
Work and whereabout history for the last 10 years.
No period of time can be left undocumented.
FBI and each states where you have lived must clear you with a criminal background check. RCMP must clear you as well.
You must be cleared with an official set of fingerprints, one set per each state and one for FBI and RCMP.
Health Exam
Proof of ability to care for yourself and or have a sponsor or Canadian spouse.
be willing to fill out many forms and wait, wait, wait, ! LOL

Bob Woodwards new book about the war is something to have some hope in as well. He was on Larry King last night, and I came away from it understanding fully, that if McCain (I refuse to acknowledge the bobble head) wins, then the war in Iraq WILL coninue.

I am ordering this book…he pulls no punches. The last 8 years will not be looked up with any favour years from now.

Most of the country is against the war. All of the polls say that. Why are people not realizing that it will go on and on with a McCain government?

fix the broken

I was just going to post this!! What a joke this woman is against a wind fall profits tax against the oil companies but for it if you are a resident of the state of Alaska? I just don’t believe this.

Another question out there for the bloggers from Alaska do you have to pay tax on that check you received from the oil companies.

ENOUGHwiththetrainwreck

okay – the laundry list of misconduct reminded me of the message boards after the Dover trial. boards that were dominated by the incredibly interesting question of whether genesis trumps scientific inquiry and the physical laws of this planet. folks posted that type of list (with sexual deviancy represented on both sides of the aisle) periodically and it is beyond disturbing.

but back to just plain lying…………arrogantly disceiving the public about facts that can be checked in less than an hour with a good internet connection and posted on more blogs than there are printed newspapers with links, sidebars, and public discourse. and other lies that it takes concerted effort and tremendous amount of reading and digesting to also result in the highly disappointing conclusion that – sure enough – lies were told to get the vote.

and where is the embarassment? or to be fair – where is the humble “crap i didn’t know that, thanks for showing me where to become more educated on the facts”? where is the corrected message?

communicating to the citizens of the united states TODAY is not the same as it was even 5 years ago. we can actually go online and read the alaskan government website and see who actually did propose the legislative language that created the production profit tax PPT originally and who proposed the language that narrowed the definition of operating costs. TODAY we can read the annual report on the success of the PPT and that the expected income is $800 million dollars less than projected during the drafting of the legislation. TODAY we can then go back to the documents that were presented to the legislature and read that the projected earnings were based on $40 and $50 per barrel oil. and we can decide if one person or many persons “stuck it to big oil”.

TODAY we can read the USGS re-evaluation of the seismic data for Section 1002 lands in ANWR and see that the prior evaluation of the location of gas and condensate reserves is actually not the place that today’s technology predicts it will be.

TODAY we can read that the lease(s) for Point Thomson gas field are currently under litigation and Alaska had to try to yank back the lease to bring Exxon/Mobil to the table to put a date on drilling for gas.

now let’s stop right there for just a moment. the government is forcing the industry to put up or shut up — drill on government owned land or go away and let someone else do it. industry doesn’t drill on land because it is cheaper to find oil and gas elsewhere on the planet. government tells industry what to do. okay. is that a democratic policy or a republican policy? or an economic policy. if the free market does not warrant the expense of billions of dollars to explore and produce natural gas in the most northeastern tip of alaska…….that it is easier i guess to go to europe and drill in old USSR land(s) and deal with post-USSR governments then okay. let the free market decide right? or is it true that every once in awhile the stalwart republican party gets their hands dirty and MAKES industry do something they don’t want to do………..and how is that working for you up there in alaska? down here in the lower 48 it sucks. they just chuckle in the halls of the court system. well, sometimes they are down right pissy…….

okay – back to the election, palin, and all things reformed republican….

we are told that the solution to our dependence on foreign oil is to drill drill drill. i do not believe i hallucinated that message. the republican national convention – one that could oust ladies dressed in pink while the crowd chanted the code word USA USA – allowed the crowd to hold signs that said “we struck oil with Palin” and chant Drill Drill Drill….i think that means the RNC message was Drill in Alaska.

well, why not Texas? if you look on page 22 of the joint Alaska/USGS report on natural gas exploration potential in the artic (and ANWR)it shows that of the top 15 states that have proved gas reserves – Texas is far and above the richest land mass with natural gas that could be produced. so why ANWR? why not Wyoming with the second largest proved gas reserves? or Colorado? or the Gulf? or Oklahoma? seriously — why ANWR?
why Alaska?

because it is government land and not privately owned? or because that is where this fabulous pro-life, creationist, republican, female pitbull is from? or is it because our nation’s senator of longest standing is from Alaska? a man who until recently was third in line to the presidency?

my answer – no one in the party looked that far or read that much or gives a crap………..it sounds good and surely they can control this gal once the ticket is elected. personally – i sincerely doubt that. cause if you elect a woman because you think women want a woman in power — guess what there are a buttload of us that will not be so very chipper about her being marginalized even for an hour. so the woman we elect best be someone that speaks for us — cause (and i want you to think about this)…….we have women in power right now and all of us expect shit to get done and will not be content to hear about a cushy wallflower existence.

now back to what we can read on the internet that is real. not opinions or news or hackjobs. just the real reports, proposed legislation, testimony from the public, responses to public comments, and the final versions of bills after all that wonderful (and for the most part ignored) citizen input into our great law-making process……….

i think the contract to TransCanada to build the natural gas pipeline in Canada (and regulated by Canada) resulted in the distinct possibility that if and when the three apparently pissed off “energy” companies will not invest billions of dollars to drill in ANWR (as they have stated in oh so many words during the debates over the contract)……and that TransCanada knows there isn’t much of a reason for a business to build a pipeline if no one is going to pay them to use it to transport gas. but lets say one energy company yet to be identified that patiently waits for the lease to be yanked and competes successfully in the public bid to lease Point Thomson and/or ANWR………that they spend many billions of dollars to start the serious exploring and drilling and evaluating of the coastal plain of ANWR – and let’s say their stockholders are pleased with the reports from the exploration teams that yes indeedy there is gas and even if it is 12,000 feet down – it can be captured and produced from one to a dozen or more gas wells………..is that when the contracts between the energy company and TransCanada will be signed? so that TransCanada can start building the pipeline? okay — that can surely be worked out in between stockholder meetings, rise and fall of wall street and other pesky world things that affect how much of the profit oil and gas businesses re-invest in future markets rather than just buying back stock and investing the other “future markets”………oh and i guess the going price of natural gas might have an effect. but seriously – i am just a woman with a bunch of college degrees holding me back.

but i digress……..back to successfully drilling for gas while simultaneously praying that the big gas pipeline is being built. oh wait – did you say something. you in the back under the balloons at the RNC did we forget something? Andrea what in the hell is going on down there at the RNC?

oh yeah – there is the treaty between Canada and Alaska the says ya gotta protect some subsistence and some environment. okay will those words have more than one syllable okay………..we are talking oil and gas so please try to stick with the program here.

oh excuse me……..what? seriously i can’t hear you? oh you say there might be some public meetings and legal ramifications about the subsistence and the environment? hey – most community organizers can tell you that the odds of grassroots uprising and discourse with government and industry can be marginalized if not completely ignored cause we are talking national defense. okay – now you know – yeah sure – i understand the republicans made you think those environmentalists wield a lot of power and just stop things cold. will actually not really. but it is a great american dream and i recommend you work extra hard next time okay? (my sarcasm here is based purely on the fact that folks that fight for the environment are the folks that have prescience, compassion, and a type of courage that is not represented by a monument in our nation’s capitol – and yet those grassroots organizations and citizens that work for years battling the government and industry do it for free, do it for love of country, and do it for the future of their families and the nation)

but i digress. okay we got the gas wells going up – we got the pipeline being built – we got the lease thing in appeal – or not – we have barreled through the public comments and due process (whew) and off we go – pumping gas…………which is then reinjected into the formation so that we can produce oil condensate.

tapping fingers on desk or air guitar strumming – you pick – it will be a while. try 20 years. i bet you the Stones will still be way popular.

okay now that we are done producing oil condensate NOW we can produce the gas. yeah. woo woo !! no more dependence on foreign oil. WOW WOW WOW.

uh, no. actually if the price of oil is still really high – Canada would like to use the gas to produce oil from the tar sands of Alberta. okay – see the gas is in the pipeline that is in canada and canada is – you know in a position to buy it or trade something for it.

oh well. that will be 20 years from now – many of you will be dead or in a dilapidated “retirement village” or just now starting to pay for your children’s college education. or voting for the first time for a president of the united states.

wonder what you will be able to read on the internet during that election?

wonder if you will be able to read anything of substance on the internet?

wonder if you will vote based on a flashy youtube video – the number of signs at the intersection – what your preacher tells you to on the sidewalk just outside church cause folks are actually losing their tax-exempt status when they mix politics and religion………..or a roll of the dice cause reading sucks and who has the time?

well, i just took about 100 hours to read this election cycle. and i read legislation, technical reports, public comments, state and federal regulations, treaties, and a buttload of blogs and news articles.

what did you do?

try googling the following topics:

1. PPT also known as the Production Profit Tax
2. USGS ANWR – should get you a link to their latest report
3. AGIA also known as the permit for TransCanada gas pipeline
4. TransCanada – always interesting to know who is on the board of directors of the company that is going to help us “stop our dependence of foreign oil”
5. prime minister of canada – gosh best to know his/her name and functions cause that country is now a player in our energy game.
6. ted stevens – hey he helped define what ANWR is some 30 odd years ago

then i recommend you check out what products you use every day that is made with the heavy ends of crude oil…………and ask yourself how much asphaltene, and heavy ends there is in natural gas.

none

but then i think you knew that was coming.

here is a fairly good, easy to read review of the history of ANWR – there are many others – look around – read more than one. http://www.policyalmanac.org/environment/archive/crs_anwr.shtml

i particularly like how that author addressed the 2000 acre footprint that was described by Governor Palin as the size of the Los Angeles Airport. yeah well, okay — that is like saying if i took all the stray paperclips on the floor at the Captiol they would all fit inside a small box. probably true. but kinda skirts the issue about all the far and wide places one has to travel to get to each and every paper clip.

on the alaska.gov site you can find the powerpoint presentation of “natural Gas Exploration Potential” as prepared by USGS and Alaska here (the link works about 1 out 10 times but that is the presentation to the legislature that clearly shows Texas has way more gas than ANWR but ? probably not paying good right now): http://www.legis.state.ak.us/specdocs.asp

seriously – we need the rest of the “oil” to make stuff – plastic stuff – etc. you know the drill. and no amount of bioenergy or wind energy or solar energy is going be the raw materials that produce that crap.

THAT is the OTHER HUGE dependence on foreign oil — not the driving around stuff and not the power that runs all things electric. it is the manufactured goods that we need to be concerned with and that represents just over half of what we do with oil…………just a bit more than half. the rest of the whole is transportation and energy(utilities)…………hmmm

so ? are we gonna play nice nice with the oil barons or beat the crap out of them for our plasticky stuff…….

i personally would like to do something that does not require the spilling of blood every single day. truly. that is my prayer. and i have not found the woman that can pray that way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZlWnCcBFpo

Wonder why she didn’t add in that waitressing experience when she was fluffing up her Wiki entry? After all, “Little Trigg” edited it on the day of her announcement as McBush’s running mate to add that she minored in Poly Sci to her education quals. Which is such a relief! To know she had actual educashion on, you know, political stuff, sort of.

But she is charming in that Charlie Rose interview! Expect the same from the Charlie Gibson interview.

Yeah, this stuff is all correct. They get so much money from the federal government because of Uncle Ted Stevens.

I think the point that really needs to be pushed is that while the McCain campaign is pushing her as an “energy” expert, she’s an oil person, just like Cheney. That worked out pretty well for us, didn’t it.

And I also think it’s really the media that needs to push this, not necessarily the Obama campaign. Or they need to let the media bring it up first. Now Obama can quote Time magazine.

Perhaps we finally have something that will stick. She took 300 days of per diem for staying home. If she failed to declare it as income, she defrauded the Federal Government. If she claimed it as income, she knew she wasn’t entitled to it, and defrauded the Alaskan Government. Either way she loses.

{Proud2BUSA: Nothing, NOTHING would make me squeal with delight on Election Night to have Obama take back TN! Thanks for your post!}

You’re welcome!

I don’t believe in moving away from the problem. Tennessee is my state, too, and I’m not leaving – here’s why: It is a beautiful place and there are thousands of Democrats, some of whom are big environmentalists who want to preserve what we have. They fight the clear-cutters, the strip miners, the developers, and polluters. It is worth fighting for. Sometimes even Republicans join up and fight on the same side because they love it too – hunters, fishermen, bird watchers, hikers, kayakers etc. If the whole country could get with the Nature Conservancy the way Tennesseans do sometimes, we could clean the place up.

Why that never translates into politics is beyond me.

Georgia, too. Tenn and GA are split down the middle but we all get shafted for being closed-minded conservatives. People whine about their votes being “cancelled out,” and they’ve got a point. But I’m optimistic on a good day that things can turn around in these red states.

If I didn’t want people to go vote and keep trying I wouldn’t still be writing on this blog.

@ Miemaw
You say you don’t understand a governor not living in the official residence…

Well, Nancy Reagan (Ronnie’s wife) refused to live in the CA gov’s mansion. She thought it a bit run-down for her taste. Yes, it did need to be rennovated. But she sold the state on the idea that we needed a fine spanking new governor’s mansion that would be suitable for doing all the entertaining required. It was such an extensive project that it took all of Reagan’s time as governor to build. His successor, a Republican, former state AG, and his wife took one look at the monstrosity and refused to set foot in it. Too big, too ostentatious, they said. So, sort of like that famous jet plane, it became a white elephant.

About that time I left CA for a dozen years, so I don’t know what finally happened to it. I do know that our current gov flies back and forth from Sacramento to his family home almost daily. But he uses his own private plane at his own expense. He stays in a hotel room while he’s in the capital. I imagine that’s on us. Can someone tell me — does California have a governor’s mansion? And are we still trying to find a buyer for Nancy’s white elephant?

ABlog is the only place I have seen this, and I think it needs to get out more. Here is a link to the original article in the Frontiersman (Wasilla newspaper) printed in 2000, with quotes from the Wasilla chief of police whom Sarah Palin hired, stating that it was just too much of a burden on the taxpayers. The state legislature actually had to pass a law to prevent this from happening any more:

Well, the polls seem to have calmed down. They are about where they were before the conventions— a statistical tie— so the whole episode seems to have been a wash. I guess this also means that McCain didn’t really get a bounce after all— he just went back to square one.

Funny, I heard an Obama spokesman predict this just yesterday.

Also looks like the Gallup poll lacks credibility. It has been WAY out of line with the others this week. Zogby was saying this yesterday.

I really would love to know what kind of poll data the Obama campaign is looking at. Obama keeps seeming cool as a cucumber. He’s either an idiot or he’s got some reason to feel confident.

Another interesting take on this article is the question of whether the reimbursements to the Palin family was declared as income on their tax returns. IRS regs are pretty clear on this issue, and it’s clear that at least a good portion of these reimbursements (certainly anything to do with the family) should have been declared on their tax returns.

Lemonfair,

I didn’t get the impression that Woodward was defending Palin. Larry King asked him (this is not an exact quote) what he thought about Obama and Palins (lack of) experience in foreign affairs, and would they be able to handle the war crisis.

Woodward used Lincoln as an example. He went on to say that Lincoln was inexperienced, ran for some office, didn’t get elected, then became a state Senator, then became the President of the U.S. and the rest is history.

What is interesting about his remark is that, I’ve heard it mentioned before that Obama’s rise in politics almost parallels Lincoln’s rise into politics. This is just my take on it, so I may be completely off the mark.

First, the good news — http://www.factcheck.org posted a retraction!! Well, kind of. They toned down the snippiness of their original post and clarified some things, including that they were not completely debunking Anne Kilkenny’s letter and would be looking into the other allegations. GOOD WORK, PEOPLE!! KEEP IT UP! But by the same token, we MUST be careful! The more things that are speculation without hard proof will make the things that HAVE been found true seem insignificant and just make give her sympathizers more fuel to discredit the media.

On the subject of per diem, here is another side:

From http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=M2E3N2FkM2JiZDEzMTc2MWYyZmM5ZDRhZjNjM2JhNDY=

Another Palin Non-Scandal [Jonathan Adler]

Why the Washington Post thought its story about Gov. Palin’s per diem expenses as governor was worthy of page one treatment is a real mystery. Yes, Palin sought per diem expenses for some nights spent at her home in Wasilla when she was not staying at the Goveror’s mansion in Juneau, but this is no scandal. As David Bernstein notes (and John Miller notes below), if you read the story carefully you learn that the per diem’s she’s sought are explicitly provided for under state law, she sought less reimbursement than she’s entitled to, she sought less than her predecessor, and she also eliminated other expenses that her predecessor imposed on Alaska’s taxpayers (e.g. a personal chef at the Governor’s mansion). So then why is this story on page one? John wants to know when the Post will report on what Sen. Biden’s love affair with Amtrak costs the taxpayer. David has another idea: A story on the various “fact-finding” missions Sen. Biden’s taken at taxpayer expense. I’m sure the Post will have these stories any day now.

And this, from David Bernstein (link is in the above article):

New Washington Post “Expose” on Palin:

You have to read the article carefully to figure this out, but what the story ultimately reveals is that Palin (a) billed the state for most expenses allowed by law, including per diem when she stayed in her own home (her “duty station” was the state capitol of Juneau) in Wasilla; (b) didn’t bill the state for other expenses, when she could have done so lawfully, such as per diems for her children; and (c) spent a lot less money on expenses than did her predecessor, especially on travel and by ridding herself of the state’s personal chef. [FWIW, she apparently maintained two residences, the governor’s mansion in Juneau, which by state law is her official work “base” and where assumedly she didn’t get a per diem (but where her predecessor had a personal chef whom she let go), and Wasilla, from where she commuted to Anchorage for work when the legislature wasn’t in session. Saintly to take the per diem she was legally entitled to when in the second residence? No. Worthy of the lead headline on Washingtonpost.com? Please! Not illegal, not unethical, and not a scandal.

Certainly, this is something worth questioning her about to counteract her portrayal as the fiscally conservative Governor who will jump over tall buildings to save Alaska money! However, we need to be careful and examine rebuttals from the other side before there’s a full-on attack. We run the risk of minimizing the other things for which there can’t possibly be an argument. Just sayin.. :-)

Here’s the ugly truth about McCain’s record:
-IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants

I have worked for the State of Kansas and the State of Texas and if I’d cc’d my spouse or other family members regarding State business, I would have lost my job. If I’d padded my travel vouchers, I’d have lost my job. Additionally, I might have been prosecuted. I guess that elected state employees have different rules from “hired” state employees.

I reread the factcheck.org thing on special needs. Once again factcheck.org doesn’t know what they are looking for. There is such a thing, listed in the IEP (Individual Education Plan), as the least restrictive environment. This is what the general public refers to as main streaming special education kids. The federal government has a setting of level 3 for this. A more restrictive environment is a level 4, which is addressed on the IEP. There is also a level 5, which is even more restrictive. Typically they try to keep kids that are in special ed in the level three environment.

Another thing factcheck.org didn’t say whether or not they looked into was any mandate that a court had passed in arbitration. Did a case go into arbitration and the judge mandate them to increase funding? Was any of the districts in true violation on any IEP’s, and they had to settle some lawsuits? Does this increase in funding include a scenario where a student resides in one district , but the district doesn’t have the proper programming for that student, and the student must be transported to a different district that has the programming that that student needs? Then you have the No Child Left Behind scenario. Was some of the level 3 federal setting schools following behind because of the special ed students at these schools? So they needed to increase funding.

Then you have to look in to the staff to student ratio. Does this funding increase include the salaries for all of the people working directly with these special ed students? And then there is the BIP (Behavior Intervention Plans). How many of the special ed students have these attached to their current IEP? In some of these cases, does the BIP state that the student has to have staff hired and trained to work with these students? By staff I am referring to special ed teacher, special ed assistant, a para professional, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech clinician, behavior specialist, autism specialist, bus aides, the special ed director for each district.

What about special ed transportation? Is this included in the budget increase? Then you have advocates that each school district has. The purpose of the advocate is to solve problems between the schools and the parents. Is this part of the budget increase? Or all of these things I just listed totally separate? Do they also try to bill the parents insurance for medical services provided to the student, as listed in the IEP? These are things I suspect factcheck.org probably didn’t look at. Unless they, personally, have dealt with special education issues, they wouldn’t know what to look for.

Come on people this woman is still repeating the lie about the bridge to nowhere…she did it today.

Palin repeats Bridge to Nowhere lie.»

Today at a rally with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in Ohio, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) once again repeated the lie that she opposed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska:

You’re going to hear a lot about the abusive practice of earmarks in Congress from our good senator here. We championed, in Alaska, the reform of the old earmark process. We told Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks for that Bridge to Nowhere up in Alaska.” If our state wanted a bridge, we were going to build it ourselves.

Watch it:

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/09/palin-bridge-23/

9 09 2008
Martha Davidson Vancouver B.C. Canada

The blatant lies Palin has been espousing about her record are shameless. Straight off the mark, in her first national speech! Bridge to nowhere, thanks but no thanks , she says in her speech. Palin campaigned for that bridge! When it became a huge embarrassment, then she changed her mind, but kept the money! What did she do with the money? Palin built a road to nowhere. The road ends at the footprint of the famous bridge to nowhere. Palin hired a lobbyist when she was mayor, she took earmarks, the pork she now is against, to the tune $4,000 per citizen. That’s about 28 million dollars. Palin left Wasilla in debt to the tune of 4,300 per citizen. That’s about 30 million dollars. To put that in perspective, if the mayor of New York City did the same thing, it would look like this;

earmark(pork)….4,000 per citizen = 32,000,000,000
debt……………….4,300 per citizen = 34,000,000,000
Yes that’s right BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!

Now lets bump that up to a national level, because Palin would be a heart beat away from the presidency, fiscal records do count. There is approximately 300 million people in the US, so here goes.

No earmarks available, so lets keep borrowing from the Chinese, because the US has no choice. That IS the Republican way of doing business as well.

loan……………..4,000 per citizen = 120,000,000,000

debt……………..4,300 per citizen = 129,000,000,000

The debt Palin incurred was for one thing only, a hockey arena!!!! Palin also left Wasilla tied up in litigation over the land for the arena, litigation that adds up everyday.

If you take that to a National level you would have every citizen in the USA owing approximately 7.5%, of their national debt load for hockey arenas!!!!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

Current National debt as follows;

U.S. NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK
The Outstanding Public Debt as of 09 Sep 2008 at 03:49:24 PM GMT is:

The estimated population of the United States is 304,696,625
so each citizen’s share of this debt is $31,759.54.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$1.93 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
Concerned? Then tell Congress and the White House!

Palmdale,

Just a couple of points on the Gov mansion in Sacto during the Reagan administration…Nancy refused to use the mansion because it needed renovation and it was allegedly aggravating their son’s asthma. They lived in a lovely home near the University during that time while the ‘new’ mansion was being built. Residents of the area referred to it as a Safeway store on the river because thats pretty much what it looked like. It was still under construction when Reagan left office. Jerry Brown, who was Secty of State at the time, was elected as Gov after Reagan. He was a bachelor at the time (one of my college roomies dated him off and on). He steadfastly refused to live in the mansion and instead rented a modest condo in downtown Sac which was basically furnished with a bed, a table and a couple of chairs. He eschewed the state limo and drove his own modest car (this was during the big gas crisis) or rode a bike. Those were interesting times!

Someone above mentioned Obama grinning like the ‘cheshire cat’ – as if he knows something we all don’t.

I think that something is the misleading polling numbers.

He KNOWS that the largest demographic in support of him (18-30 year-olds) are NOT included in any national polls because of the fact that they communicate almost exclusively by cell phone or Blackberry, and these people are NOT included in any national polling data.

Throw that demographic into the mix, and Obama takes a big jump in the polls.

Heck, I’m in my early 50’s, with a wife and 2 kids, and even we don’t have a land line anymore. We we painting a room one weekend, and our youngest boy asked me about a box that was on the wall that he had never seen before.

I said ” that’s where we used to plug in the telephone – there’s one in every room”.

And he replied, “Plug in the telephone ? Why ? Telephones don’t have cords”.

Ahh, the innocence of youth.

Someday, at some point, they are going to HAVE to start including cell phones in national polling numbers.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/08/stevens_no_action_for_bridge_t.html

Stevens: No ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ Advocacy by Palin
By Paul Kane
Count Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) as a defender of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s position on the controversial “Bridge to Nowhere” project.

Stevens, who once threatened to resign his Senate seat in 2005 if $223 million for the bridge project was defeated, told reporters today that Palin was never a supporter of the project, which has quickly become a bone of contention in defining the GOP vice-presidential nominee’s self proclaimed image as a maverick reformer who took on “the good ol’ boys network” of Alaska Republicans.

“I don’t remember her ever campaigning for it. As a matter of fact, she was very critical of it at the time. And she took the money and did not use it for the bridge, so you’re wrong, as far as I’m concerned,” Stevens said today.

IRS and Per diem rates: My guess would be that the IRS would view Sarah’s “tax home” to be Juneau. Therefore, when she is in the Gov’s mansion, she is at home. When she is in Wasilla–way more than half the time–she would be entitled to per diem reimbursement IF SHE IS PERFORMING STATE BUSINESS.

A real reform candidate would have said this: my home is Wasilla and when I am in Juneau, I should be entitled to reimbursement EXCEPT THAT my employer provides me with a house there–and I HAVE A CHEF TO PREPARE MY MEALS THERE, so I don’t take any reimbursement.

Remember, out federal government set these rates in effect. If I were a congressperson from Montana who was elected to serve in Washington D.C., I would be entitled to receive a per diem for each day I was in DC for business since my tax home really is Montana.

Question 1: did she really conduct a full day of business on each of the days in Wasilla? If not, then the daily rate should have per prorated.

Question 2: Did Sarah follow the letter of the law or the spirit of the law? Since per diem rates were set up for the convenience of the employer–not to have to deal with all those mooseburger receipts–Sarah would not necessarily have reported the income. The letter of the law says that if you received reimbursement greater than your actual expenses, you must claim the difference as income.

Observation: after 20 years as an accountant, I can tell you that the IRS rarely takes a look at this. States often do look at it. This would likely be a case of playing audit lottery. You can get away with anything on your tax return until you are audited.

If there is any suspicion that what Sarah received daily was in excess of what it actually cost her for that day and if she failed to claim it as additional income, then an audit should be initiated.

I’ve been enjoying mudflats the past few days and just thought I’d throw in a few thoughts about Sarah

Poor Sarah – people just don’t understand her qualifications. They think she doesn’t understand Iraq, but she is able to empathize perfectly with the Iraqi government – she gets huge amounts of federal money to pay contractors for questionable infrastructure projects while she sits on a booming oil surplus that she refuses to use to improve the quality of her people’s lives. What better insight could anybody have into the Iraqi way of doing things?

As far as people getting worked up about her not understanding what the vice president does – there is a good reason for that – after Dick Cheney redefined the office as a separate branch of government how could she know, in fact how could anybody know?

The real important point we have to look at is that she is pushed to replace Cheney not to fulfill the constitutional functions of the vice president. So we should evaluate her purely on those terms. Unless of course, we don’t want another Dick Cheney.

On another point she is popular with most Alaskan voters. Why shouldn’t she be – she just arranged to pay $1200 to everyone there? This raises a question though, what happens with the revenues from oil drilled on federal lands? Will that money be divided out to people in the other 49 states?

Are issues front and center? Are they ever? It’s an ideal, not the reality when an election is in process. Who is not generally familiar with “the issues”? Who doesn’t basically know what they feel or think on “the issues”? Judgments are made, with or without consideration of details. Anything can be rationalized. The issues don’t go away. They may change in name or face, but they are things that frame life.

Yes, minds can be changed, but it’s foolish to believe that a voter has their attention on an election focused to the point of its becoming a day to day priority for more than an extended moment perhaps. That’s not to suggest folks are lazy. Maybe they are. Maybe they are fervent on whichever side, maybe they don’t care, or rather, aren’t worried for the fate of the country, which also is not to suggest that they are heartless, clueless, or unpatriotic.

If citizens are receptive to and demanding of hearing the issues, then voters would be hearing the issues. There’s a reason for campaign strategies. There would be less sensationalism or whatnot. Put the mirror on the voter. Some may honestly not know how they will vote. But that doesn’t mean they are necessarily unsure how they feel on an issue or “the issues.” And that’s not necessarily “stubbornness”, etc.

Is it about issues? Who wouldn’t say ‘yes’? Is it about “anything”? Yes, why wouldn’t it be?

Keep it simple.

Well, its true, nobody understands small town values! Like in Linda Lingle-Palin soul sister’s Hawaii, where governor’s chief of staff can have sex with an underage girl while probably traveling on the state’s dime, gets blackmailed over it, and manages to have the whole thing treated as a “tragic personal matter.” Yep, that’s right, and all the emails about the affair, which likely involved “prominent Hawaii businessmen” get sealed under court order because when you’re blackmailed, you’re a victim. But hey, that’s the way it’s done in small states, and it’s your “management” expertise that really matters, right?

I have not listened to this sound file yet but got this link from Dermot Cole’s column in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. It is an interview with Palin from August 2007 and it looks like it has some interesting background and her perspective on various issues at that time.

The other thing is, the internal Obama campaign polls must all be oriented towards the states and must be much more up-to-date and probably more accurate than the ones we see. Why would they care about the national polls? It is in their interest for people to think the race is closer than it really is.

‘breakingnews’… GREAT LINK TO YOUTUBE

Just got on today and was catching up with all the news thats fit to print… got to your post with the link to that YouTube video. I was literally crying at the end. I have since sent this to both of my children to send on to EVERYONE they know. We are all Air Force veterans, as are many of the members of my family. We are and have been patriots all of our lives, and will continue to be. I was a volunteer back in 1970, as were all the military members of my family when they each signed on at different points in thier lives. I hold a VERY special place in my heart for ALL veterans, and those men and women currently on active duty in ANY branch of service. I fear for them. I fear for thier families. I fear for ALL of us. If this sovereign nation were ever to be attacked by a foreign enemy, I and those in my family would be the first in line to take up arms and defend us all. But to be attacked from within… to be put in harms way for the politital or personal satisfaction of one individual and his views… to further risk loss of life and limb to any current or future member of our armed forces… that sickens me. Physically. I have been leaning recently towards a different viewpoint for this great country of ours. I know I’m not alone. As this nation slips ever so smoothly economically into third world status, and nations we’ve borrowed from in the past to keep our heads above water financially start ‘calling in’ thier notes, the collapse is inevitable. Withdraw. Strategically and cautiously bring our troops home. Return to a point prior to WW2 when we would help other nations with resources IF and WHEN they needed it, but NOT with our own military. Isolationism. I think it’s high time we protect ourselves and our interests, from within our own boundaries. The more we get our noses into other countries affairs, the worse it seems to get for us. Medical aid? Absolutely. Famine relief? Without a doubt. Disaster assistance? In a heartbeat. Political problems… militray coup… internal ethnic issues between factions… you’re on your own! When will we stop being the worlds police? Look how far it has gotten us.

My girlfriend has been a Reblican all her adult life. She voted gleefully for GW eight years ago. Voted for him again reluctantly four years ago. After being around me for so long, and watching her party self destruct… her eyes have opened. Within this election campaign, I have seen her become less of a party clone and more of a thinking American. She doesn’t trust McCain… and thinks Saracuda is just a fool who doesn’t realize she’s being led around and paraded for the vote and only the vote.

There is hope yet left in this world!

Interesting opinion from the Daily News:

Tuesday, September 9th 2008, 4:00 AM

Sen. John McCain has emerged from the convention with a slight lead – it works out to about 3 points, according to the Real Clear Politics average of major polls. But unless he starts reaching out more vigorously to independent voters, his convention bounce will likely fade.

In an election that is increasingly about who can win over moderates, Obama is still the candidate to beat. And as both candidates make their cases to voters in the coming weeks, Obama’s strategy of targeting the middle is likely to prove more effective than the McCain camp’s courtship of the conservative base.

Why do they keep repeating this stuff about the bridge? It has been debunked. I mean, I know some people want to talk about some sensationalist issues around Sarah Palin .. but here we have a *real* example of lying on an issue that the McCain/Palin campaign are advocating.

Clearly, they do not believe it is hurting them to repeat the lie about the bridge. They will stop repeating it only when they believe it is not in their political interest to do so. The question to ask is: why do they believe it continues to be in their political interest to repeat a lie that most people now know to be a lie?

Oh here we go again….my Republican husband just got a call from “Newt Gingrich” asking how he felt about the price of oil. It is ironic given that just last night I told my husband that the Repugs were going to lower oil before the election to effect the vote and BINGO, I was right. My husband has been watching oil for a while now and he noticed some unusual trending recently. It is 2004 all over again! It also seems awfully convenient that the spin on winning Iraq is being manipulated as well just for show before Election day. Same Kool-Aid, Different Flavor! I said it last night and I will say it again, we must protect the integrity of the vote. Get everyone you know to check their voter registration and print a copy of the confirmation for their trip to the polls. Take a lesson from Florida, when we see the Hurricane coming, even when we really do not know the actual path, we get ready for the storm just in case. People, Hurricane McCain/Rove, is coming so get prepared with everything you can. It really does not help to put up the shutters after the storm has done the damage and moved on.

Harley,
I have been feeling melancholy too. Surely we are smarter than this? Surely we have learned our lessons? Surely our desire for self-preservation will lead us towards a democratic administration that, though they will be burdened with immense problems, at least want to (and have ideas about how to) improve…as I write that I realize, if McCain wants to steal the Change mantra, perhaps Obama should move to an Improve mantra. CHange in and of itself is not good- and everyone knows we need improvement on many fronts…or how about Progress?
Back from that tangent…the question that saddens and scares me the most- Surely we are not so racist?
I live in a fairly affluent white area outside of Atlanta and I find myself looking at everyone wondering, Are you one of them? Or are you one of us? Are you fooled by this woman? Can you watch and LISTEN to Obama or do you only listen to what “they” say?
I find myself wanting to talk to African-Americans who are sitting at the lunch table next to me…”How are you feeling about this race? What do you think?” Of course, I don’t want to assume that they are democrats or for Obama because of the color of their skin so if I inquire (and mostly I do not), I ask carefully. And I retreat to mudflats to remind myself that there are many people feeling the way I feel and thinking more deeply than the soundbite media would encourage us to do.
This election matters SO MUCH. It already did, but SP just increased the stakes.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office,

Does that include weekends? Does anyone know? Because it’s 55% of her time if it includes weekends. But if it doesn’t? Then 68% of her term has been spent “at home”. And if it does include weekends, why would anyone be paying her for *weekends* at home?

Apparently getting elected to governor in the State of Alaska is equivalent to being elected president to the student council in high school. You really don’t need to know anything, have cute sayings that don’t offend too many people; “What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lip Stick!”, and have the prettiest smile. The article below was taken from Think Progress by Satyam on 9/8/08 filed under economy.

Palin’s first gaffe: Claims Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac are taxpayer-funded.»
Speaking in Colorado this weekend, Gov. Sarah Palin tried to explain the recent federal bailout by claiming that lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.” The companies, however, “aren’t taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization,” McClatchy noted. Palin’s satement “is somewhat nonsensical because up until yesterday there was sort of no public funding there,” said Andrew Jakobovics of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “The ‘too expensive to tax payers,’ I don’t know where that comes from.”

Digg It!

I think I will move to Alaska, I really enjoyed the high school experience. They question why the federal government is so involved in their affairs.

It may have been said already but papers write that she gave up her chef because she wanted to cook for her family…
She gave up the chef because they were never around to be served meals.

I love the comment that she WAS a stay-at-home mom!

Also, I was an assistant professor at a (public) university when my first child was young. My trip to a conference was always paid for if I was making a presentation. My husband and my child went along more than once. Obviously, they stayed in my room because it was paid for either way. All other expenses (airfare, food, an extra night in the hotel if we stayed to sightsee- out of our pockets). Obviously.

The issue for me is many politicians get on the gravy train and love the perks…but don’t sell yourself as a reformer if the record shows that you are a politician as usual.

The constant lies and corruption in McCain and Palin’s camp is beyond belief.

jwb: The reason the McCain campaign continues with the lies is that many people don’t check to see if it’s the truth. They believe the email lies they receive from their friends — rather than check with snopes or factcheck.org they just forward it on.

My own intelligent, republican parents just believe the party rhetoric and refuse to check with non-biased resources — if it goes against the party line the resource must be biased or have an ax to grind.

Friends of mine in Alaska are so pleased that their State is being represented that they forget or ignore the truth about Sarah Palin — she’s one of their own so they’ll defend her to the last.

Koch is a member of a set of secular, swing-voting Jewish Democrats who may have been pushed away by the selection of Palin, and his endorsement may be a marker of an opportunity for Obama to strengthen his campaign among older Jewish voters in Florida.

Obama needs to do a commercial showing Palin talking in her Pentecostal church and then playing her pastor’s opinion of Jews. Then play it 24×7 in Florida. That should do the trick.

I would completely concur with the assessment from the Daily News that the election outcome will depend on winning the moderate vote and that McCain is relying on a very small part of the electorate with the Palin pick. That’s essentially the bulk of the political base on both sides and I would venture that the core of voters are actually slightly right of center and attributing that to more fiscal conservatism. But I also hope and pray that the 18-30 year old demographic, which typically sits out elections will defy history and get that vote out. I plan to be working our very large University population close to the election to get that vote out.

What is really infuriating me is WHERE THE HELL IS THE OBAMA CAMPAIGNS RAPID RESPONSE TEAM

Last night Keith Olberman tried over and over again to let Obama know that he needed a sound bit, not all that “thoughtful conversation”. KO asked him why he wouldn’t use the word LIARS. Obama didn’t answer. KO asked him if he regretted disolution of the 527’s like MoveOn Action PAC, Obama said he thought American people were smart.

What is wrong with him?!? KO practically beat him over the head nicely and in so many words told him pick up the AK, the rocket launchers and launch a few pipe bombs in this battle. Doesn’t he want to win.

That tired but accurate cliche “knife to a gunfight” is appropriate. Peoples eyes glaze over when Obama gets all wordy and detailed in a response. Why can’t he just say THEY ARE LIARS PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Forget that “stretch the truth” bullshit.

If Hillary were on the ticket, you can betcha believe there wouldn’t be this silence.

(I hope that works- it is my first try on the links- if not, it is under Most Popular on Yahoo News).

I feel sick to my stomache that people are buying all this. The Republicans are lying to our faces and people believe it. They aren’t even trying to lie well, just lie about things that tug at people’s emotions so they don’t think too much about what is being said.

IMHO, this country has one chance to redeem itself internationally and domestically, and that is by electing Obama- a man who has not just READ the Constitution, but taught Constitutional Law and who belives in the sanctity of the Constitution.

If we elect another warmonger Republican president, we can kiss our international standing good by. The international community will think we really ARE that stupid, and after three election cycles, I would have to agree with them.

The idea that the Republicans are even close right now, especially after nominating Palin, fills me with sadness for this country.

Interesting comment I saw on salon.com:
_____

How about the Pipeline to the Tar Sands?

Every state in the country has dozens of bridges to nowhere – that’s what Congress does, time and time again, and that’s why local businessmen donate to their representatives, in the understanding that some federal pork will be coming their way.

That’s how Congressional incumbents stay in power – because if they are voted out, their replacements won’t get their juicy committee appointments, from whence all pork cometh.

Palin’s real shocking deals are her pipeline deals and her offshore oil lease deals, which have been repeated ignoried or lied about by the press so far.

Both the Washington Post and the New York Times printed that the pipeline was for transporting natural gas to the Lower 48 – but it is NOT – it is for supplying the Alberta tar sands with natural gas in order to make synthetic crude oil – the dirtiest fossil fuel process on the planet.

At both ends of this “independent pipeline” sit BP, Exxon, and ConocoP. They own the Alaskan gas leases, and they own the Alberta tar leases, and they want a connector.

Sarah Palin provided $500 million in state subsidies in exchange for a slightly higher tax rate, called herself a champion of the people and a reformer, and then tried to get the pipeline delivered to Warren Buffet’s MidAmerican Energy – but they panicked over the corruption scandal in Alaska, so Transcanada, a major Canadian tar sands contractor, was brought in.

Don’t take my word for it – here is the correspondence between Palin and MidAmerican’s CEO:

http://www.eeo.state.ak.us/agia/PublicApplications/Declined/midamerican_letter.pdf

Bridge to Nowhere? That’s a non-issue by comparison. How does $500 million in state subsidies delivered to an industry pulling down world-record profits compare?

What kind of record is that for a reformer?

Palin aide’s are refusing to answer any questions about the pipeline, and Palin is refusing to talk to reporters. Why is that?

So, they are going to try to manipulate the markets, oil, the war and the poll records… they are trying to steal it again. call me what you will, but GeeDub’s handlers staged a coup and we just took it… now his handlers are going to make sure they get to stay in power.

He called Sarah Palin’s lies a lie in his most recent campaign ad. I hope he keeps it up. I was disappointed that he avoided Keith Olberman’s question about calling a lie a lie on last night’s Countdown, though.

I received this letter from an organization called Newamax this morning. Looks like the Republicans are really dising some dirt!

Dear Newsmax Reader:

Please find an urgent message from one of our sponsoring advertisers, the Republican Majority Campaign PAC. They are seeking to defend Sarah Palin from vicious media attacks and expose Barack Obama. Please read their important letter below.

Newsmax.com

They will do anything to destroy Sarah Palin.

They will do anything to elect Obama President
— the most leftwing candidate in history.

Only you can stop them.

Dear Fellow American:

As I write this letter, the far Left — the Obama campaign, the Democratic Party headed by Howard Dean and the major (liberal) media—are all working in overdrive to destroy and smear Sarah Palin.

They believe if they can destroy this courageous young woman and popular governor, they will end John McCain’s bid for president.

Just this week, commentator Bill Maher ridiculed Sarah’s baby son who has Down’s syndrome. These people are absolutely despicable.

They have one goal: Put Barack Obama — the most radical left-winger ever nominated by the Democratic Party — in the Oval Office.

Because of this, I am urgently writing you on behalf of the Republican Majority Campaign PAC, one of the nation’s largest and most influential PACs.

We are fighting to expose Barack Obama’s radical agenda and defend Sarah Palin and John McCain from the liberal media.

We have plans to launch a multi-million dollar TV and online ad campaign to reach millions in the next two weeks, but we need your financial help.

We need it more than ever because Barack Obama will likely spend more money than any candidate in history to get control of the White House.

Make no mistake about it: Barack Obama has very powerful backers.

Obama promised he would abide by campaign finance limits, as John McCain has agreed to.

He lied. This week alone, Obama raised $8 million! He could easily spend $500 million during his whole campaign to buy the White House.

Worse, John McCain and Sarah Palin have their hands tied with public financing limits.

That’s why the Republican Majority Campaign needs your urgent help in our major national TV ad campaign to help John McCain and Sarah Palin.

PLEASE HELP EXPOSE THE REAL OBAMA TODAY! CLICK HERE

The Republican Majority Campaign PAC is one of the nation’s leading PACs.

Already the Republican Majority Campaign PAC has spent $2 million on grass-roots efforts exposing Obama, voter by voter.

But it’s clear we need to do more and urgently.

We need to tell the American people the truth about Obama, his agenda and his radical associates.

In our national campaign we’ll reveal the truth about Obama’s radical tax agenda, including:

his plan to almost double capital gains tax

his plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire

his plan to raise gasoline taxes

his plan to nationalize healthcare

MAKE YOUR MOST GENEROUS DONATION TODAY!

We will also reveal the sordid truth about Barack Obama:

How for 20 years he sat silently as his minister, the radical preacher
Jeremiah Wright, said he hated America — the same preacher who
blamed the 9/11 attacks on OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.

The involvement of convicted felon Tony Resko in the purchase of Obama’s$1,300,000 home.

His despicable association with his friend William Ayers, who was on the FBI’s Most Wanted list for over 10 terrorist attacks.

The fact that at age 25, Obama was backed by a radical Muslim activist close to the Saudi royal family when he applied to Harvard Law School.

HELP US REVEAL THE FACTS ABOUT OBAMA! CLICK HERE

The Ayers Connection

William Charles Ayers and Barack Obama have been friends for decades.

There is clear evidence that their lives and dealings have been intertwined for many years.

We have reason to believe that Obama and Ayers were friends way back in 1986.

They even served together in 1995 on the Annenberg Challenge, overseeing the distribution of about $50 million to area schools.

That same year, Ayers hosted Obama in his own home and donated to his campaign.

What does the association between Ayers and Obama say about Obama’s political views and perspective?

Ayers was an anti-American, traitorous radical who will stop at nothing to push his hateful communist agenda.

In the 1960s and 70s, he was a leader in the notorious underground terrorist group, the “Weathermen.”

The Weathermen declared war on the United States government and they bombed over 30 establishments (leading to multiple fatalities, including police officers).

Obama’s friend Bill Ayers

“Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars
and apartments. Bring the revolution home,
kill your parents, that’s where it’s really at.”
William Ayers

Ayers is unapologetic about his terrorist activities.

Incredibly, on Sept. 11, 2001, Ayers is quoted by The New York Times as saying, “I don’t regret setting bombs … I feel we didn’t do enough.”

How could a man like Obama associate with such a dangerous radical? And even defend him?

And now Obama, Ayers friend, could be sitting in the White House next year — unless we tell the American people the unvarnished truth about them!

MAKE YOUR MOST GENEROUS DONATION TODAY!

We Must Defend Sarah Palin and John McCain.

The major media have already decided who their candidate is: MSNBC host Chris Matthews says Barack Obama makes a “thrill” go up his leg when he hears him speak.

Oprah has picked your next president.

But you can stop Chris Matthews, Oprah and the rest of the liberal media.

You can say we the American people will pick our president.

Your voice can be heard — we need your urgent help with the Republican Majority Campaign PAC.

Your maximum possible gift of $5,000 would help us enormously.

Even smaller donations are going to help.

Anything you can do will give us the ammunition we need to fight for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Any amount — $1000, $500, $250, or even $100 will help show the truth before the November Presidential election.

Even if you can only afford $35 or $25 — we need your help and we need it now.

We must act quickly. We want to have our first ads up reaching millions in the next two weeks. Ronald Reagan once said, “If not us, who? If not now, when?

I will let you answer his questions today.

Thank you, and God bless America!

You Can Make a Difference — Go Here Now!

Seriously, has the McCain campaign gone mad…

firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/09/1366884.aspx

Why do they keep repeating this stuff about the bridge? It has been debunked. I mean, I know some people want to talk about some sensationalist issues around Sarah Palin .. but here we have a *real* example of lying on an issue that the McCain/Palin campaign are advocating.

Clearly, they do not believe it is hurting them to repeat the lie about the bridge. They will stop repeating it only when they believe it is not in their political interest to do so. The question to ask is: why do they believe it continues to be in their political interest to repeat a lie that most people now know to be a lie?

Few people are actually calling it a lie and those that are calling it a lie may be perceived to be or identified as having their own bias and “bias” and “lie” are charged words. Also figure in that MSM has long been and has recently been framed as, well, biased and essentially liars. Powerful dynamic.

Voters of any party make choices to prioritize election factors (?) such as the “stuff about the bridge”. The mere fact that the plane was put on eBay is a story or description that resonates as, perhaps, “trying to reform, and it’s modern.” That’s “good” in itself. To some degree, there is also the phenomenon (?) of the effect that can occur when something, anything, is repeated; a filtering, where what stays up is going to eventually be different from person to person, kind of like that game “pass it down”, where someone says something to another, and so forth. However, this example isn’t an exact parallel because of the end goal. It’s not about literally memorizing a line or phrase. It’s about what floats up. And what floats up gets the chance to float up because the election is not about one thing, one line to memorize and tell the person next to you. There are many other issues, stories, lines, factors, etc. And the days go on. Only so much time, what remains?

Rachel Maddow deserves some credit for venturing where she has. However, it cannot be denied that her saying this doesn’t also come with immediate blowback of “liberal”, “bias”, and the heavy word itself, “lie”. Same as with Keith Olbermann, or on the other side, Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity. Folks of certain dispositions are willing to accept or reject. This isn’t about “truth”, whether or not one wants it to be. Others may color their reception of the charge of “lie”, etc., beyond the facts themselves. Is hypocrisy a lie? Do certain circumstances demand different interpretations and perhaps acceptance? What to keep, what to throw away.

If Colin Powell came out and called “lies”, there are problems there, too, although it would carry serious impact. If he called “lies” on Iraq, then he’s open to facing his own possible charges of like “why now?”, etc. Why would he call lies on something like Gov. Palin and a plan on eBay. It would have to be a laundry list.

People might expect “lies” in a campaign and that leads to filtering. To each their own, and what remains, or what settles, is not necessarily defined by facts, since “facts” get modified and as a result, there is a general blur sometimes as to what really happened, motivations, results and, consequently, how does one describe what happened.

I am just wondering how pissed the Alaskans are that they had to pay her to be at home and to run the governor’s mansion too? Or do you guys not have one of those? Did she fire the staff that usually comes with the house and turn down the utilities to the bare minimum? Of course what is that in AK? I mean it has to be a bit higher there for longer right to keep pipes from bursting and such then say in the Kansas City Metro area where I am? But I have never been to AK so I am just asking

@ Let’s Get Real
..[Let’s just say McCain did get in office, and started another 2 or 3 wars. We will get just what we deserve if people vote on popularity, rather than real change. (Peace, Dignity, Respect, Honor, Faith)]..

Ok, someone quoted the “You can’t handle the truth!” line. Here’s the truth. Jimstaro, please, please correct me if I’m off base.

The biggest reason Rummy blew off Shinseki (sp?) when he said we’d need 250K in theater was that WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TROOPS TO SEND THAT MANY! That’s why the JCS were so opposed to the surge, even though they knew that they needed many more boots on the ground to effectively tamp down an insurgency/guerilla war.

Remember how Bush touted the Petraus Doctrine? That says we’d need 250K troops to effectively fight an insurgency in a country of 25million. Let’s be honest for a change and call it a guerilla war. Remember the Powell Doctrine of overwhelming force that was used in the first Gulf War?

For every combat person in theater, you need 2 more there to support them — thus the reliance on contractors like KBR for all the support services. And you need 2 more at home — one decompressing from their tour and another to be training up to replace him/her.

Shinseki got “retired” for telling the truth, and Rummy didn’t even have the decency to attend his retirement ceremony. Let’s count how many others — Abazaid, Casey, that Admiral who was the head of Centcom. Pace? Others? The truth is that Bush fires his generals until he finds one who agrees with him. Or at least one sees what’s happened to everyone else who has bucked the CinC and decides to preserve his career and go with the flow and try to make the best of it. Think I’m wrong? Look at the history. Read Richard Clarke’s new book.

Several potential explanation for McCain and the idea of more wars using our current force structure. He’s dumber than a box of rocks. Or there’s a new draft just waiting in the wings. Or maybe he’s delusional. Or Scott Ritter’s right? Or????

This is exactly the problem. There are basic facts that aren’t debatable yet the networks allow known lies to be presented as equal to the truth.

That’s Not True
Begala:

ALEX CASTELLANOS, CNN POLITICAL CONTRIBUTOR: Let’s be a little gentle.
Look, every elected official in this country works under the system we
have, which is you try to get a little bit of your tax money back. You
just don’t want to leave it all in Washington. The amazing thing about
Sarah Palin is when she became governor she actually stood up and said
no. And she made it -

BEGALA: That’s not true.

CASTELLANOS: She took a strong stand. That is rare and that never
happened.

ROBERTS: All right.

BEGALA: That’s just not true. You know, John, the facts matter.
There’s lots of things that are debatable who is more qualified or
less experienced or more this or more passionate, whatever. It is a
fact that she campaigned and supported that bridge to nowhere. It is a
fact that she hired lobbyists to get earmarks. It is a fact that as
governor she lobbies for earmarks. Her state is essentially a welfare
state taking money from the federal government.

ROBERTS: We still have 56 days to talk about this back and forth.

BEGALA: This is the problem. We have this false debate when we ought
to have at least agreed upon facts.

And Castellanos isn’t some campaign flunky, he’s a guy that CNN pays to tell you things that aren’t true. Still it would be absurd and pointless to debate whether CNN has some modest obligation to tell you things which are not false.

Obama can’t hit back, remember he is an African American. He has to be very careful about how he hits back. It doesn’t matter if he is intelligent, charismatic, none of that matters. The same rules does not apply here!

Sure, alot of people aren’t racist, but for some reason, we don’t play by the same rules, if we challenge another race.

However, as Luke Russert put it, in so many words, young adults their generation does not see race, or think one race is superior over another. The young adults will decide this election!

My nephew who goes to college in Georgia, said they were discussing this election in class, and they were saying Palin was a fake!

People say, the young adults will not come out to vote, but I believe they are…and in record numbers!

I agree with others who have said to trust that Obama has a plan. He is a brilliant guy; he planned this campaign for years. Bystander – I agree with you, that it drives me crazy how the republicans will cover their ears so they can’t hear the rebuttal, and just repeat and repeat a lie, louder and louder with more and more authority, until it just morf’s into fact. They do this with lies, such as the bridge to nowhere and also with propaganda. An example is the drivel about her being COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ALASKAN GUARD and BEING NEXT TO RUSSIA!!! One after another, the republican pundits picked it up, saying it with more and more of a smile and voice of authority and soon the media just stops challenging it (if they ever do in the first place). AND those, like Campbell Brown, who do have the courage to push it end up in a very uncomfortable place. (usually if the media question it once and the pundit repeats a lie indignantly, media just puts tail between legs, and turns to someone else and asks something else…. basically giving a free pass AND helping perpetuate the lie as fact). I think Cambell Brown was pretty brave that first go around, but seems to have toned herself down a good bit do to the anger from the McCain campaign. I just cannot stand this whole thing with this venomous, nasty, lying , evil, greedy REPUBLICAN party. Sorry, I am venting because the polls have improved so much for McCain since this nasty Bimbo was added to the ticket.

Obama will win this because he is keeping his cool. americans have short term memories (think about how palin’s daughter’s news seems so old to us, now consider we only heard about it last week). my prediction is that the Obama camp will slowly start to turn it up on mccain especially as we get closer to election day. the mccain camp will be allowed the opportunity to continue telling their lies, but as we move into october and november their lies will be the cause for their own demise.

i am grateful that for the first time in my lifetime we are having very important conversations in this country. We have NEVER had to really deal with questions that pertain to these three topics on a national level before:
1. race
2. gender
3. how the United States of America will be defined post-millennium

with that being said we should not give up. Obama will stay the course and so should we. keep hammering away, keep sending those emails, keep donating time and money, keep encouraging people to vote. think about how energized and united we are. we will win this not because we are democrats, independents, or republicans, but because this time we are supporting the party of truth.

Hey guys since the thread here is sort of about why Obama is striking back, I thought we might want to revisit something that AlwaysAmazed1 said yesterday so I brought it over here:

AlwaysAmazed1 (18:09:13) :

@DeMo: “Obama is not going to show his rage, and I wouldn’t want him to. The last thing I want to hear is people accusing him of being an angry black man.”

I do so agree. I am AA, 52 yoa, and an attorney and I can tell you the last thing our candidate should do is become the angry black man. I must say that it is a testament to all non-AA mudflats’ers(?) who think our country would be accepting of our candidate if he did hit back hard. Based upon my experience (and I have plenty working as an attorney in corporate america), I can tell you unequivocally that it would not workfor him. It’s the fear and intimidation factor. It is used against you in most cases…I know this firsthand.

So I am going to trust the campaign strategy (looking forward to the debates), keep donating, sending voter registration emails and will help get out the vote (early voting, especially)!

I believe Obama has a strategy. I know it is hard to turn away from this trainwreck of a VeePee nominee… and we shouldn’t turn completely away, but we do need to keep doing the ground work… talk to our communities, register people to vote, volunteer at our local HQs, take people to the polls on November 4 and VOTE!!!

My head is spinning. So much so that I wanted to respond about my fear of apparent brazen “half truths” and “flip flopping” and misrepresentation of recent personal qualifications from both Sen. McCain as well as S. Palin. Since McCain graduated 4th from the bottom of his Annappolis class of 899 cadets, and became a pow because he disobeyed and broke ranks in the air, by his own admission, I’m still trying to figure out what he’s actually done/fixed with his time in the Senate; and, apparently Ms. Palin never stood out as an outstanding student (nothing against average students), but I can see why they are railing against Sen. Obama’s intelligence, oral competance, vision, and hard fought ability to overcome adversity is the “real american story”. I am also distressed that McCain and Palin represent themselves as “mavericks”…both have been reported as having volitality in their dealings by those who disagree with them. “My way or the highway” is hardly the way to run a civilized nation and deal in good faith in a global economy. If this were the “wild west” and McCain was Wyatt Earp and Palin were Anny Oakley, I might be inclined to be less critical, but it “aint.”

Now, additionally distressing is the fact that Ms. Palin’s governance over a lovely state of only 600+k population in total is nothing to brag about, especially since so many of Alaska’s population live in remote areas far removed from the effect(s) of her oversite. You would be fairer to the voting public to have a running mate that was the mayor of Los Angeles, CA which has a real global economy and a population of millions as well as a melting pot of multi-race cultures.

McCain announced today that he has never put an earmark for Arizona in his 26 years in the Senate…my question is why? Was there never a school or library or university that your constituants needed? Or, was he just not interested. Earmarks are not a bad thing…wreckless earmarks and wreckless spending is the problem (Ms. Palin has/had no trouble using them).

When listening to Ms. Palin in recent interviews, she comes off like a programmed “chatty kathy” doll, never taking a breath between sentences and using every “buzz word ” and/or “buzz phrase” over and over again and on and on… which leads me to believe that she has been programmed to tell anyone who will listen whatever we want to hear, and that she may be without an independant intelligent thought of her own (after all, why is her husband governing with her…he’s billing the people for doing official business for her). I also think John McCain has been very fortunate to be able to use his war record of 40 years ago to maintain such a long senate run. Maybe someone from Arizona could enlighten us all with his real record for that state and why he keeps getting re-elected.

I’m additionally very disappointed and truly very scared that this duo may blind the good people of this country and manage to bamboozle their way into the white house. They may be the kind of individuals that you’d like to share a beer with, but how many people in your own neighborhood bar would you have running your country?

By the way, I’m a Republican.

“McCain announced today that he has never put an earmark for Arizona in his 26 years in the Senate…my question is why? Was there never a school or library or university that your constituants needed? Or, was he just not interested. Earmarks are not a bad thing…wreckless earmarks and wreckless spending is the problem (Ms. Palin has/had no trouble using them).”

That’s a big reason a lot of folks in AZ don’t think he’s done a good job representing them. My MIL, who was supporting Hillary, is planning on sitting this one out. (At least she’s not voting for McCain, and that’s why!). She says her issue is Obama’s “lack of experience.”

ME: Abe Lincoln had less legistlative experience when he ran and won. He turned out to be pretty darn good, don’t you think?

HER: But the country was different then.

ME: It was deeply divided then, like now. Lincoln realized that you can’t just let a vocal minority get its way and tear the country apart. Yes, a war resulted, but his view prevailed then, and it needs to prevail now. Obama has demonstrated the same sort of character and wisdom to realize that the divisive politics of today are tearing us apart.

Unspoken REAL issue with her is his race, and probably more importantly that he is mixed race. She’s well into her 80s and will never change. I just wish she could be honest enough with herself to admit that’s the problem. Then we could continue a real dialog. She sure doesn’t agree with Palin, but she just can’t bring herself to vote for Obama.

Several others have commented about the extent to which race is the unspoken issue for a lot of voters. And I definitely agree that the LAST THING Obama can do is get angry. That would simply confirm the stereotype of the angry AA man. Obama’s calm and cool demeanor reinforces the temperament argument without having to bring it up. The question is how to get those who vote with their lizard brains to get what is so very obvious to those of us who use the more evolved portions of ours.

I’d argue simply that a lie is not what it once was. But, I don’t know, it might not have ever been what one might have thought it was, some morally, ethically -however one wants to frame it- heinous act, something to avoid. There’s a lot that could be said on this, but suffice to say:

Idealism versus Pragmatism. What is in play? What is at stake? Does the end justify the means?

“Obama needs to do a commercial showing Palin talking in her Pentecostal church and then playing her pastor’s opinion of Jews. Then play it 24×7 in Florida. That should do the trick.”

You’d think so, wouldn’t you? I emailed some friends about Palin’s former pastor saying he has no doubt that her relgious beliefs will influence her decision making when it come to gov’t policy. (This is from the online CNN article about the GOP downplayng her religious beliefs.)

One friend wrote back that she doesn’t trust Obama’s religious beliefs and thinks Michelle is anti-white. I told her I only put the facts out there and it’s up to each individual to understand the facts and make an informed decision. Of course, I added the stuff about per diems, attempts to ban books, lies about the bridge to nowhere, etc. No, I have no problem frightening people. They should be frightened, especially when they’re clearly ignorant.

It was a real WTF moment when I read that she didn’t trust Obama’s religious beliefs. Obviously, Wright frightened her. So I asked if she’s frightened that Palin said our troops are on a task from G-d. Haven’t heard back yet.

I’m scared, folks. Rational people are making irrational decisions based on BS.

Thanks for letting me vent. I’m off to make a donation.

“I’m scared, folks. Rational people are making irrational decisions based on BS.”

For several days we’ve been exploring the personality disorder issues and narcissistic personality disorder, specifically. One of the key traits of the narcissist is that they make otherwise rational people feel insane, and angry.

Thinking about this situation in psychiatric terms, in the broader social context, may help.

I’ll leave you to connect the dots on the irony of these two articles.

However, remember, prior to 9/11, we experienced attacks by home-grown, fundamentalist terrorists. The difference was that they were Christian fundamentalists. Tim McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, the clinic bombers and provider murderers to name just a few. I forwarded to my troglodyte son Juan Cole’s eloquent post on Salon.com comparing Palin’s extreme beliefs to those of Islamic fundamentalists point by point, and how in many ways she’s more extreme than they are. I don’t expect a response, but maybe, just maybe it will give him pause.

Is it possible a certain number of people are DUMB- yes….educate WHO you can- share the truth- blog it – copy articles for your neighbors and friends…..This Ticket is Irrational and Insane- that spills onto all of us…just keep to the Facts and tell the Truth …..and share it far and wide…

It’s not so much about being angry as it is about making others feel some anger about the situation. The McCain tactic of repeating lies until people think they are truths is an old Rovanian tactic. They need to be called on the lies and I am happy to see the MSM at least moving in that direction. However many Americans just assume it’s true because McCain or Palin say it is.

I am wondering if it is legal for Obama supporters to attend McCain rallies if they stay at the perimeters and shout loudly and in unison LIE LIE LIE each and every time the Bridge to Nowhere lie or Ebay lie or she took no earmarks lie. Nothing violent- rather silent, completely silent until a lie is spoken.

Anyone here know if this is legal or does it fall under a ‘protest action’ and require permitting?

DeMo – It may be of interest to you, due to your friend seeming to have turned away from Obama over the Rev. Wright issue, that I became comfortable with Obama over that same issue. I had been a Hillary supporter and did not know much about Obama, other than that he certainly is a gifted speaker, but at that time, I worried some about the “experience” issue. While the primary’s were still being battled, I was watching Obama closely, as I suspected he might be the winner and end up being our candidate and I felt that the stress and duration of the primaries would be a crucible and we would see what he was made of. I discovered the following things, which may make sense to some of your friends who are democrats but reluctant to support Obama.
1. He maintained his dignity and while firmly rejecting the philosophy of Rev. Wright, continued to act respectfully towards the Rev. Wright – and when the Rev Wright thing went further south and he finally had to really cut ties with Rev. Wright, (and you could see it was a deeply painful experience personally), he continued to act with self control and grace and dignity and I admired his handling of what was just a nightmare of a situation. I thought, if he can handle other crisis this well…..If he can stay this cool and handle a foriegn policy emergency or national disaster this calmly and with this attitude – sign me up. On the other hand, I would like to have given the Rev. Wright a swift boot in the seat of his pants…..why he and Jesse Jackson have made things any harder on Obama, we would all like to know. With friends like those……you don’t even need enemies….or republicant’s.. or whatever.
2. He has run a heck of a campaign. He has managed his money really well (unlike either McCain or even Hillary). This is no small thing. If he can run the campaign so well, I feel he can run the government efficiently. Also, he has stayed positive – NO Sara Pallin diatribes from this campaign (only from those of us in the blogs!!) He has surrounded himself with very smart and competent people (hopefully this will be the situation if he becomes president – unlike the cronies Bush and Palin tend to go for) – the only uncomfortable thing for me was when the advisor visiting in Canada made the Gaff talking about the trade agreements. I wasn’t too happy about that – but again, Obama just kept on keeping on. He is a “steady eddie” who seems to have some REAL character.
Also, a further aside. I am so sorry for Michelle Obama that they keep bringing up that one mistake. These people (yes, even the evil enemy) must be so exhausted from the campaign schedules – it is hard to imagine that everyone in these campaigns won’t inadvertently say something foolish at some point. The difference is, our side will let it go – poor Michelle will be ragged on for that proud of America remark until she is an old gal my age.

Fortunately, for the world, there are millions upon millions of brilliant and intelligent people in America. Unfortunately, neither Sarah Palin or John McCain appear to be one of them.

These are very dangerous times both economically and militarily. Whoever is elected better know what the hell they’re doing.

I started the day in shellshock, depression and disbelief. The Republicans were at it again, and it was making me really mad. I decided I had to do something, and it has HELPED my day so much better:

1) Sent my email out to my independent friends, including some staunch conservatives. Included that horrific video of WAR that you guys gave earlier as well as the link to the comparisons between Palin’s views and Hamas.
2) Sponsored, aka BOUGHT LUNCH for my Yaya friends to discuss this and just what the heck are we going to do about it? Our basic constitutional rights are at stake. Everytime I hear McCain say: “Change is coming. . . we’re going to shake things up…” I envision mandatory drafts, depression and round-ups of the “undesirables.” (With the last CNN segment with Bill Mahr, it was funny but it gave me shivers. . . we are asking comedians now to soften their blows??? You are kidding me, right?) One my dear friends admitted under conspiratoral whispers that her husband, who is a known staunch conservative, is quietly going to vote Obama as he cannot vote for the nuthouse.
3) Everywhere I go – in the grocery store, dry cleaners, car shop, my financial advisor, etc. – I end my conversation with: “did you know that John McCain voted with George Bush at least 90% of the time? Change, huh?” It makes a lot of people nod their heads and laugh! :)
4) Worked with my local team today on helping people get properly registered to vote. Even drove the janitor of our building there – he was smiling ear to ear because, he, TOO, wants to vote FOR REAL CHANGE. FOR POSITIVE CHANGE, NOT FALSE PROPHETS.
3) Signed up several folks from my neighborhood for Saturday’s Carolina Cookout for Obama.

Guys, take heart. The average person IS getting this. Yes, there are a couple hundred thousand fundamentalists who are sheep and cannot think for themselves or they would look at the voting records, who is protecting our Constitutional Rights, and who has voted consistently for the record to get us here?

Proud 2 be et al

just got off the phone with Mom in PA and sister in VA. This is it. I am going to move back to PA or VA for a month or two so I can register and vote there. Who knows, I might stay longer and take a leave of absence. Mom feels the state will probably go blue except for the “Alabama in the Middle” portion, but fortunately Pittsburg and Philly McSame doesn’t stand a chance. VA is less predictable. No VA will go to Obama overwhelmingly, but being here in true Blue LA my vote is a song to the preacher.

I went to bed furious and woke up the same way that we are not hitting the liars and exposing them to the fullest. I’ll be glad when the “bridge to no where issue” fades away. Living in a state that has had many bridges to no where along with “sea ports to no where” half bult dams that would give us cheap electric power, but after they were finished and all the trees striped from the mountains sit half empty with no salomn runs and are being lobbied to be removed, and lots more of this kinds of pipe dreams of the good life for folks at the end of a goat and moose trails so dangerous you can’t use them in winter and therefore have little or no public services until someone figures out how to make some money by finishing the dream that started the project and battled it out with every other state that was asking to have such projects funded. Remember AK came late the porkbarrel picnic, but with all the resouces at the end of those trails, sooner or later the fat cats and smooth talkers will be more determine to slip the legislations through collect a few bucks on the side and blaze a new super hiway to the next boon town turned metro. Hey no state I know of hasn’t gone through that now that I think about it.

If it isn’t happening in AZ then we just haven’t sent the reporters there to look for the pork yet,”look out very soon we will know there names” there will be bbq’s grilling mesqet all over down south. Let’s get back to the top of the ticket folks. Good point from the guy from AK on CNN just now, if you get the bridge you also have to give us some schools, health care, and I could use an increase in my SS, now that I’m old enough to get medicaid they just cut my $400 check by $100. So how much supplimental insurance can I get for $300 or should I take may chance and help my husband pay the $750 per month we pay in property taxes.

I’m not sure about a race battle I’ll think about that later though I once almost married a man that looks alot like Obama’s father when I was in college, I’m in the elder vs younger worker debate with my son and SIL kwho are asking me why they shouldn’t privatized SS. They don’t think they can afford to pay for all of us retired hippies and babyboomers. So I just ask them if we should stop paying for their schools and libraries and since my SIL works for the city street department the new roads and city improvements.

The debate stopped when we all decided that the real budget cut needed to be stop funding wars that kill children ours and theirs, who ever theirs happen to be. Once again a black man didn’t look so bad to any of us.

On the Clinton playbook – I heard yesterday (I think it was yesterday) that Obama is meeting with Bill Clinton very shortly. Hope we unleash all we got.
Commenting on another thread (pressure now on comedians to soften their barbs) you know, I think Jon stewart, Mike Moore, Bill Mahr, Colbert – all the great comedians who so give us such great satire – are our greatest weapons with especially the young voters. They can see how hypocritical the right is and the absurdity of their views.

REPUBLICAN LIARS CHEATS THIEVES ETC.

The Mccain/Palin ticket: “Family values” ? Mccain (whose father = TRAITOR) a well documented whore monger married a slut with money and drug addiction, Cindy STOLE NARCOTICS from a CHARITY. Sarah Palin, member of doomsday cult that “speaks in tongues” who is a proven LIAR and adulteress who has/had 3 (known) concurrent extramarital affairs. Do we want to “elect” 2 miscreants to “lead” us? If they can’t even be faithful to their own families: can we honestly believe they will be faithful to our country?

Mccains’ father conspired with LBJ on June 7th, t967 to let the Nazi Israeli air force sink the USS Liberty. Admiral Mccain recalled fighter jets that were scrambled to answer an SOS from the USS Liberty.

John Mccain is the one who started the fire on the USS Forrestall that resulted in the deaths of over 130 US Sailors by “wet starting” his fighter jet to “get even” with the pilot of the aircraft directly behind his on the flight deck.

John Mccain was “tortured” by the North Viet-Nam government with excellent surgery to repair badly broken bones. He was also “tortured” with coffee and cake sit downs while he cooperated with the enemy with intelligence that put other fliers at risk.

John Mccain is not a “war hero”. John Mccain is a TRAITOR! A Distinguished flying cross has nothing to do with valor or courage. I was decorated with a Bronze Star by General Westmorland in 1969. I guess that honor should make me “Emperor of the World”?

John Mccain has a record of violent verbal and physical outbursts. As a sociopath: John Mccain is unfit to serve our country in any fashion. John Mccain was deemed unfit to rise to the rank of Admiral because of his personality disorders.

Sarah Palin is a power hungry ego maniac with anti social tendencies who abused every drop of power she ever latched on to. She fired competent city and state employees for personal vengence and also summarily terminated others so she could fill those positions with political cronies and hacks with no talent for the desired positions.

What about “The Bridge To Nowhere”? Just this one blatant lie should give any educated voter pause for concern.

John Mcbush keeps lying about Obamas economic policy to raise every bodies income tax; when in fact: his plan is to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans. John Mcbush can’t even remember how many houses he owns. He is the one intent on destroying the middle class!

As a Patriot and a proudly INDEPENDENT AMERICAN WITH A CONSCIENCE: MY GLOVES ARE OFF TOO!

“I’m scared, folks. Rational people are making irrational decisions based on BS.”

I can’t stress it enough: we have a sizeable number of Americans who will NEVER vote for a Black man. Never. We have to accept that reality. Don’t think they are telling the pollsters that. We are one of the most racist nations in the world. And those of you who said that Obama can’t get angry because of the myth of the “angry Black man” are right. In addition, McBush’s temper is an issue – and Obama has already said that he will debate McBush on that topic.

Rachel Maddow is a lesbian – AND she has a PH.D in political science. She’s Dr. Maddow. Smart woman.

I must say though, I am getting queasy. But someone has already stated it, Obama has his eye on the electoral votes. That’s why those swing states are so important. I trust that his campaign has a game plan – but I think the Palin effect has thrown them for a loop.

Palin-Gate (copied & edited from another blog):

1.Troopergate/ currently ducking a deposition under oath and refusing to turn over 1100 emails.
2. Replaced the guy she fired in troopergate with someone with a sexual harassment complaint who lasted 10 days – and then gave him a $10,000 severance package in exchange for not suing the state.
3. Todd’s Alaska Independence Party connections
4. Used a state site to promote mining interests over clean water.
5. Bridge to nowhere: being for it before she was against it – and still lying about it!
6. For earmarks before she was against them
7. Pumping money into a bankrupt Alaska dairy and then selling it off to cronies
8. Firing employees as mayor over loyalty issues
9. Attempting to ban books from the library and fire the librarian
10. Involved in the 527 for Ted Stevens
11. As mayor hired a lobbyist to secure $27 million dollars in pork for town of 6,000 residents.
12. Her own still dubious pregnancy/flying 3000 miles after her water broke and back at work 3 days after the “birth”.
13. Her expensive ($25 million) screwup with building a sports complex in Wasilla as mayor
14. Anti-abortion, even in the case of rape & incest. Alaska has one of the highest rates of rape and incest in the country!
15. Anti-gay marriage
16. Pro-abstinence education only – and Alaska has one of the highest STD rates in the country!
17. Pro-gun
18. Anti-environment (wolves and polar bears & beluga whales)
19. Pro-drilling, including ANWR.
20. Global warming denier
21. Creationist/wants it taught in schools
22. Thought the Pledge of Allegiance dates to the founding of the country (it was penned in 1892 and “under God” was added in 1954)
23. Thinks the End Times will occur in her lifetime
24. Attends a church with an anti-Semitic, anti-Islamic pastor that believes you can “pray away the gay”
25. Charged the state nearly $17,000 in per diem travel expenses when she was living at home
26. Fannie & Freddie gaffe.
27. The troopers union is filing suit because Trooper Wooten’s disciplinary records were looked into.
28. Supports killing wolves from helicopters.
29. Sequestered from the media.
30. That personal chef she fired from the mansion, Stefani Marnon, is still on the state payroll – now cooking at the Legislative Lounge.
31. Attended 5-6 colleges in 6 years.
32. Son Track involved in juvenile incident where he and 3 other kids stole vodka, then vandalized fifty school buses. He may have enlisted in an “either jail or military” deal.
33. Firing her friend and legislative aide, John Bitney, because he was dating the wife of one of their married friends
34. Still lying about selling the plane on E-Bay for a profit.
35. Not a “hands on” executive & lacks follow through. One of those executives who doesn’t read much beyond the executive summary. Not unlike Bush.
36. Vindictive & mean. Does not like dissent. If you are not perceived as loyal, she’ll crush you. Not unlike Cheney, Bush, & Rove.
37. Video showing her stating that she doesn’t know what a VP does. The rest of us learned this in the 3rd grade.

CNN 360 did a fact check on rumors for SP. They say she increased, not decreased spending for special needs education. How can this be verified? They tend to stretch the fact checking. Example they say rumor on banning books is false because she never ‘banned’ books, only inquired about it. If the librarian had let her do it she probably would have.

The taxpayers are being ripped off and that is OK? I believe the ‘former’ Mayor of Atlanta had to serve a jail sentence for allegedly using less than $600 in funds – yet Sara has free rein to take, take, take and then take some more. I’m quite confused about why some people are entitled to break the law (Sara Palin) and some people aren’t entitled to buy kleenex while using government funds. If the former Mayor of Atlanta had to go to jail and lost his job, then I’m going to suggest the same for Sara Palin. I demand jail time and her removal as Governor of Alaska.

WaPo Reports On Palin’s Expenses– The Latest Non-Scandal

You have to read the article carefully to figure this out, but what the story ultimately reveals is that Palin:

(a) billed the state for most expenses allowed by law, including per diem when she stayed in her own home (her “duty station” was the state capitol of Juneau) in Wasilla;

(b) didn’t bill the state for other expenses, when she could have done so lawfully, such as per diems for her children; and

(c) spent a lot less money on expenses than did her predecessor, especially on travel and by ridding herself of the state’s personal chef.

So, when are you guys finally going to find that conclusive proof that Sarah Palin was brought up an Inuit animist, studied the ancient Eskimo legends when she was a kid in school, had her house funded by an igloo slum lord, served on an education snow-board with a known terrorist, attended a church for 20 years where the reverend was renowned for saying “God d*mn the Arctic Circle!”, received donations from Hasidic Jew Secessionist League of Israel, approved millions in earmarks from Big Ice Cubes, and hides her racist Snow White Liberation Theology beliefs?

Not that the Vast Reich Wing Conspiracy would ever let such juicy tidbits leak out to the public of course… Nor would they in any way disqualify her for the White House.

Will the good people of Alaska please, please, please start a recall of your governor. I am no expert on the law, but it seems to me that with all the evidence surfacing of various forms of fraud and abuse of power that she rightly should be impeached. That could be done quickly and salvage the reputation of Alaska as an honest and upright state.

Did the Palins ever release any of their tax returns?

I’m sure it is an obligatorily part of the public’s vetting process.

All of the other candidates already released their tax returns, right?

How come Sarah and Todd Palin are so rich?

The Palins say they had to elope 20 years ago because they had no money.

Todd said he could not finish college because of money problems.

The Palins tried but failed at a car wash business.

In her big speech, Sarah bragged that her husband is a union worker (implying that he is just a hard working “9 to 5″ kind of guy).

But, Todd has been a stay-at-home dad for about a year, which means he had no employment income.

Don’t forget, that the Palins have been raising a bunch of kids, which, of course, is expensive to do.

Sarah started working in politics around 1996, when she became a mayor.

But, somehow (according to this web page http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-78448) the Palins have amassed a net worth of about NINE MILLION DOLLARS.

How is that possible?

Where did all that money come from — considering that for most of the past 20 years Tood has been a union worker and Sarah has been a civil servant?

Someone needs to investigate this, no?

Big oil responsible for the Palins amazing wealth??

It costs the state of Alaska $356,500.00 annually to maintain and staff the Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is where the governor of Alaska is supposed to live while serving their term. The State Capitol, and legislature, is about a hundred yards down the street. Governor Palin prefers to live at home in Wasilla, over 600 miles away, and collect per diem, while the state continues to pour the money into the empty Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is not efficient or ethical.

Joe Biden goes home on Amtrak every night Obama said. That is $180.00 per day on the taxpayers. Not to mention what he cost taxpayers by bailing out Amtrak so he could keep his ride home! (Multi millions) So, if I put this on a scale of Sarah Palin’s TOTAL travel and per diem of under $380.00 per week, Biden and Obama still lose.

There is a line there that doesn’t square with their per diem claim that Juneau is Palin’s home base; “Among the listed purposes for his trips were meetings about mansion renovations; the Palins wanted to make the house suitable for family visits, although they opted not to live there full time.”
