Palin Vetting Documents from 2006. For Hard Core Palin Addicts Only.

5 09 2008

In 2006, when Sarah Palin ran for Governor of Alaska, the Democrats (unlike the Republicans of 2008) vetted her. The documentation is extensive, and was published online.

Recently, the link from various websites including Politico to the documents went dead. Then it came back. Then it went dead. Then it came back. You get the idea. Considering the tendency for things to vanish these days, and thanks to a reader of Mudflats, you may now peruse the document in its entirety below.

It’s 63 pages, so be warned. I suggest using the table of contents on page two to guide you on this “more than you ever wanted to know about Palin tour.” I wonder how long McCain’s document was?

A lot of stuff there – one thing interesting, towards the bottom, it says she was born in Skagway – I believe I read she was actually born in Idaho and moved to Skagway as an infant…

Ken,
Yes, I noticed that inconsistency too. I believe the Idaho report is correct.

Andrew Sullivan is reporting that Todd’s partner Scott Allen Richter requested that his divorce papers be sealed today. It was denied. Here is the case number: 3-PA-07-0158ICI and was originally filed on 7.24.07. Perhaps you can snag the hard copies and see if there is a co-respondent?

Yes, Palin was born in Idaho, not Skagway. I’m sure the Republicans will use that one error to discredit the entire report.

I managed to wade through that yesterday…and found it extremely interesting. Now THIS was the proper way to vet a potential VP. McCain may be a war veteran, but he sure as hell doesn’t know how to vet! :D

Interesting…thanks for publishing this. I found this particular entry compelling:

After Becoming Mayor, Palin Instituted Gag Order for the City’s Top Employees. Two weeks after becoming mayor, Palin instituted a gag order on talking to the media for the city’s top employees. Palin denied it was a gag order saying “The department heads appreciated not having to talk to the media.” [Frontiersman, 10/25/96, 10/30/96]

Robert Reich wrote an excellent post regarding the vetting he went through just to be in Bill Clinton’s cabinet. Here’s a taste:

Vetting

Having been through the process of “vetting” prospective cabinet members, I can tell you it’s time-consuming, detailed, and thorough. I’d like to think the vetting of a vice presidential nominee would be more so – especially one whose odds of becoming president, should she be elected, are somewhat higher than that of the normal vice president.

Sixteen years ago, Bill Clinton’s “vetting” team asked me and other prospective cabinet members for (1) our tax returns, going back at least five years, (2) our bank records, (3) a detailed listing of our assets, (4) the names and places of everywhere we had lived, and the names and phone numbers of neighbors whom they could call about us, (5) a description of every job we had ever had, every client we had ever served, and the names of employers and clients with whom they could check, (6) the names of our family members, their ages, their occupations (if any), (7) a description of any civil or criminal investigations or prosecutions in which we had been involved (8) and – perhaps most importantly – “anything we should ask you about, the answer to which might cause you or the administration any embarrassment.”

It didn’t stop there…….

“Palin Supported Use of “Under God” In Pledge of Allegiance. Asked if she was offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, Palin responded, “Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.”

Well … considering the Pledge was written in 1892, she might have to rethink that one…

A VP isn’t the only thing they didn’t vet.
These gals are pissed!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The rock group Heart, angry that its 70′s hit “Barracuda” is being used as the unofficial theme song for Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is biting back at the Alaska governor.

The song, a nod to the “Sarah Barracuda” nickname Palin earned on the basketball court in high school, was dusted off for her appearance at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul on Wednesday.

Heart singers Ann and Nancy Wilson said a “cease-and-desist” letter has been sent to the Republicans asking them not to use the song.

“The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission,” according to a statement issued late on Thursday on behalf of the sisters.

There was no immediate comment from the Republican camp.

Last month, rocker Jackson Browne sued Republican presidential candidate John McCain, the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party, accusing them of using his 1977 hit “Running on Empty” in a campaign ad without permission.

Copyright law may not be on the Wilsons’ side as the song is licensed for public performance under a blanket fee paid by the venue to ASCAP, the firm that collects royalties on behalf of composers and copyright owners.

Despite the Wilson sisters’ objections, one of the song’s co-writers said he was “thrilled” that the song was used.

In an e-mail to Reuters, the band’s former guitarist, Roger Fisher, said it was a win-win situation. Heart gets publicity and royalties, while the Republicans benefit from “the ingenious placement of a kick-ass song,” Fisher said.

Fisher and the Wilsons wrote “Barracuda” with drummer Michael DeRosier. It appeared on the group’s second album, “Little Queen” in 1977. The song was inspired by the band’s anger over an obnoxious record label executive.

The Real ’08 Fight: Clinton v. Palin?

Mrs. Clinton, meanwhile, has a legacy to protect: She has no intention of turning over her “18 million cracks in the glass ceiling,” as she called her supporters, to Ms. Palin, a social conservative whose policy positions are poison in Hillaryland. What is more, Mrs. Clinton wants to be the one to make history as the first woman to win at the top of a presidential ticket, be it in 2012 or 2016.

The question is, will Mrs. Clinton fight Ms. Palin to help her former rival, Mr. Obama? Clinton advisers say that Mrs. Clinton wants to do everything she can to elect Mr. Obama, so that she cannot be blamed if he loses — yet she also does not want to be too closely associated with him if he does lose, nor to tarnish her own image by taking on a rookie national politician like Ms. Palin and possibly coming up short.

Go to the Gallery section. It is an interesting read and tells one why people like Palin and will be voting for her. To me as a voter, they are interesting choices such as “she’s like me” or “we need new blood in the White House” (funny, the new face on the top of the ticket is on the Democratic side). These are important opinions, because it IS truly a race for personality. I admit. I am very protective of some personalities and former Presidents. It tears me up when people carelessly dismisses them. So, hearing their voice, and then helping them with the facts that you guys mentioned earlier today: special needs, telling the truth, etc. will play well. The key is we don’t want to look shrill. that’s not going to play with this crowd.

I was a Hillary supporter and I had not planned to make a decision until after McCain’s decision last night. It was expedited because I WANT AND NEED experience at the table. I need logic, and where people are not trying to defend every powerplay they made. I wanted someone like me in the White House, too, but I believe we have something much, much better in a young man who is busting his buttons to serve and improve this Country for all, not just a few.

I would LOVE to have the moderator of the VP debate ask each candidate to describe the betting — oops, I meant vetting — and selection process each went through.

I understand that Sen. Bayh was asked things as detailed as whether his kids had any MySpace or Facebook pages that might prove embarrassing. I imagine a similar question was asked of Biden and his family members. Anyone think Levi’s “I’m a f*%^ing redneck” comment would have passed muster?

The issues surrounding Palin speak volumes about McCain’s judgment and decision-making. That’s what’s at issue, not who Trig’s mom is, or whether she or her hubby has an “Edwards” problem, or any of her strong-arm tactics or political decisions.

McCain says the campaign should be about him. Ok. Let’s make his judgment and decision-making an issue. Somebody yesterday posted a list of possible questions reporters should be asking. They all pointed to his judgment if he already knew the answers and his deliberative process if he didn’t. Saying the pick was thoroughly vetted no longer washes. There’s too much info out there (the NE stuff notwithstanding) that he should have known and easily found out if they’d done their job. It’s obvious that he didn’t bother to gather the necessary information to make an informed decision. If that’s the way he works, I want no part of him. I do more research before I buy an appliance or a car than he apparently did before choosing his running mate!

Let’s see if we can fill the Senator’s email box. Pass it on!

Senator, I am writing to encourage you to move quickly with your report on Sarah Palin. Democrats across the country are watching and hoping you’ll do the right thing.

I don’t know why, but something just doesn’t feel right about this person. With Carl Rove in the mix, it just doesn’t feel right. He is a skate to the highest degree.

The whole world is watching us – the whole world is depending on the United States to change its approach to foreign affairs. This election is too important to have a weak, inexperienced, uneducated, dishonest person one breath away from the presidency.

Thank you for your bravery and hard work.

I found this on another website, and downloaded it. Interesting reading.

I noticed the “notes to self” where follow-up was intended.

I have the curious feeling, even the Democrats didn’t expect this much “follow-up.”

Old as I am, I do not recall a campaign for the presidency, where a candidate was nominated to be vice president on the ticket, accepted the nomination, and then was given the job description, and on-the-job-training….. two months prior to an election.

Most folks who put “country first” would find someone qualifed from the get-go.

And…. then…. there is John McCain.

Interesting Republican concept.

“Under God” was added to show those Godless commies what a Christian country we were. I didn’t like it then, I don’t like it now. No one should have to say those two words to prove they are Christian. They should do it by thought, word and deed.

In 1997, a Wasilla group called Concerned Citizens asked Palin to appear before them to answer questions, but the Frontiersman wrote, “she doesn’t intend to face the hostile group to answer their questions.” Her deputy administrator said that the group could fax the questions and she would answer them then.

In my heart, I believe what this will all come down to is numbers. Forget the issues. How many of them versus how many of us? At the moment the polls say it all: we’re more or less tied (I hate that there is even an “us” and “them” in the same country). All of the back and forth these days seems futile: they lie, we call them liars, and they put their hands over their ears and shout, “LALALALALA!!” Oy. By the time the truth comes out, people have already believed the lie. Their VP pick can’t even tell the truth about EBAY. Little lie, big lie.

Does this all really depend on the Independent voters? In that case, the facts are on our side — I tend to think people looking for more info on who to vote for will actually find it if they have half a brain, as opposed to just voting for similar reproductive organs.

What will sway them is the question. Will they be swayed by signs & slogans like “Service” (just not of the community kind, I guess) and “country first” (country meaning money & power) or can we pull enough of them over with our logic and reason? Numbers, numbers, numbers.

Unfortunately, I feel discouraged out in CA sometimes because I live in a blue state (hopefully), and so I feel like only those living in the so-called “swing states” matter. But, I continue to donate, and hopefully I will have time to volunteer at some point. You swing-staters, though — put up a good fight! I’m clingin’ to my Constitution for ya!

I was also so happy to hear the plane story debunked, a little bit ago on CNN. Do you think the facts will hurt Palin more if they are sprinkled over a span of time, versus unloaded on the public all at once?

Critical Group Called on Palin to Meet with Them, She Said they Could Fax the Questions. [Frontiersman,
3/5/97]

Perhaps this is how she plans to answer questions from the media?

Is this woman for real??????

You are running for VP of the USA but have not had ONE press conference or made ONE statement that wasn’t scripted. Why is ANYONE putting up with this crap?????? Anyone?????????? If I were a Republican I would be ashamed!

Love this statement too….

Council Member Pushed To Create City Manager Because He Said Palin Did Not Have Skills to Run Wasilla.

In 1997, a councilman made a push to create a city manager position in Wasilla. The Frontiersman reported, “Wasilla voters may get the chance to transform the city to the city manager form of government under a proposal by Wasilla councilman Nick Carney…He said he thinks Palin does not have the management skills to run the City of Wasilla.” [Frontiersman, 2/21/97]

But she has the skills to be VP?

Did McCain even read THIS report??????????

Sadly I think he did (or Rove did) and sadly they don’t care. She ‘shows’ well and as we all saw by the slobbering, drooling, hollering ‘energized’ base the other night, that is all that matters to the Repugs.

They have no intention of having her be anything but ‘window dressing’ anyway, even if she was President. Sound familiar?????

Besides donating and writing letters, remember to TALK !! TALK about the issues with everyone you come on contact with. I had another conversation this morning with a woman, who after me saying I was EXHAUSTED trying to keep up with the election and conventions, confided to me that she was an independent and still undecided. Knowing this woman to be intelligent and reasonable, I shared with her that I, too, amd an Independent but after watching, listening, and researching everything, I cannot in good conscience vote Republican. After I shared with her Palin’s ultra-right ring stance on a number of issues, the woman expressed her astonishment.
There are MANY MANY MANY people out there who don’t pay attention to the “politics”, but will listen to friends, neighbors, and families who present facts in a reasonable way.

About the polls, from here on out, the national trend lines like Gallup and Rasmussen aren’t really important. The state polls are what matter, and show the trends on the electoral college. Two places to see these are:

In a case like this, scoop isn’t as important as accuracy. I’m sure that’s part of their thinking as well. Also, if they peed all over the RNC convention with big bad scoops, it wouldn’t look good, especially if they had not yet vetted their stories. Real Clear Politics lists all the polls and keeps tabs on the electoral vote.

Obama won the primary by looking at the rules and figuring out the best way to win. He seems to be doing the same in the general election, where what counts is the electoral college. Everything I’m hearing is that thinks are getting close to hopeless for McCain on that front.

I see a fabulous HBO series about family, politics, oil, religion and sex in Alaska. It’s an intriguing story about an attractive female wing nut that claws her way up the political ladder to the Alaskan Governor’s Mansion. The VP selection comes in season two or three. Northern Exposure meets West Wing meets Big Love meets Sopranos. If that isn’t an instant hit nothing is. Alaska would be a great backdrop too.

About the Pledge of Allegiance it might be worth mentioning that the author Francis Bellamy was a socialist and the brother of utopian novelist Edward Bellamy. If I was American I would say, what’s good enough for Bellamy is good enough for me. The original was: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” I’m not sure what Secessionist Sarah thinks about the indivisible part though?

Update about the e-bay jet from Huffpo:

UPDATE: John McCain, fibbing his way through an introduction of Palin in Cedarsburg, Wisconsin, advances the falsehood: “You know what i enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — made a profit.”

Plwalsh: Obama won the primary by looking at the rules and figuring out the best way to win. He seems to be doing the same in the general election, where what counts is the electoral college. Everything I’m hearing is that thinks are getting close to hopeless for McCain on that front.
————————

EC is the only front that counts now! I heard some discussion this morning on MSNBC that the McCain campaigns internal polling is showing them very few ways to win, while Obama’s is showing lots of possible combinations.

Palin Will Avoid the Media
A senior McCain campaign official tells Marc Ambinder that, “despite the gaggle of requests and pressure from the media, Gov. Sarah Palin won’t submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while — the media will have to wait.”

LOL – MSNBC just showed a clip from a stump speech McCain made today, where he said, [paraphrased] “The best thing I liked about her [Palin's] speech was when she told how she sold that plane on E-Bay, and [he yelled this part] AT A PROFIT!” [cheers from the small assembled crowd...]

@ Sarah in CA
“Unfortunately, I feel discouraged out in CA sometimes because I live in a blue state (hopefully), and so I feel like only those living in the so-called “swing states” matter.”

Not all of CA is blue. I live in a VERY red part, not all that far from LA as you must know. It’s truly a desert up here, in every way possible. Last Sunday night I had a woman tell me with a straight face that SP’s AKNG experience qualified her as Commander in Chief! And she works for the military!!! I think she’s also a vet.

Deb’s right. As engaging and addicting as Mudflats is, and as comforting as it is to know there are so many kindred souls, both at home and abroad, we’re preaching to the choir here. We need to get out and talk to voters.

I wish the Obama campaign would somehow do a mass e-mailer to its supporters, maybe even just the small donors, on what to say, and more importantly how to respond. Anyone listening out there in Obama-land? It would make sense that someone from the campaign is lurking now that Mudflats has become known. I’ve just volunteered for a national campaign for the first time in my life — I first voted in 1968; and this is the first one I’ve contributed to.

The other thing about polling is that they don’t poll people who have cell phones only. No landline? No poll call. So there are an awful lot of young voters who are not being reflected in the poll results anywhere. I’ve heard some “talking heads” say that this race may not be as close as it looks going on all the young voters Obama registered.

Now that said, no slacking on intensity of getting out the vote and continuing registrations. The one bugaboo about young voters is that they are notorious for not showing up to vote. But this year, that may change, too.

ok…I have to say this. I live in a Canadian city of 22,000 people. We of course have a mayor and council. Our mayor…has a full time job….somewhere else. He is also a business man who runs them himself.

We have and I think the majority of Canadian cities, towns and villages…have “City Managers”. These are the people who really do the business of the town.

Mayor and council meet of course…travel on money provided by the taxpayer…sometimes look pompous and stupid….but I guess the bottom line is they are responsible if things go wrong.

I only say this because Palin was forced to hire a city manager. She couldnt “manage” her way out of a wet paper bag.

She is beginning to get called out on her lies….at least I hope so.

LaughingAt…me, too. I have several very nice (but rather complacent) women in my neighborhood (I also have some great feisty women!!!) who just sigh and say they have “…always voted Republican…”

I guess I am kind of shocked that so few people understand the battle on our Constitution and Bill of Rights based on fear. We’ve had some great dialogue – that “surge in Iraq…doomed to fail…” – well, yes….there are so many books and documents on this topic that trying to pretend that we’re “winning just because we’re the USA” is nothing short of naive and SCARY (I got them SCARED over the lack of knowledge). Don’t you love how they are now calling this the Surge on Iraq? What happened to bin Laden? That’s a good question for people too.

We have a mayor who is running for Governor in NC. I ask if they would vote for McCrory if he had all these conflict and allegations against him. Of course not, they say. Then why would we accept anything less for our VP?

Finally, and this one is rich, I ask what they think of John Edwards’ affair. They are mortified. Lead in to McCain and Homewrecker Barbie. . . . time does not change facts. . .
OH YES, AND THE KEATING FIVE – I AM NOT GOING TO LET Y’ALL FORGET THIS – $2BUSD + INTEREST – WE WANT MCCAIN TO GIVE THAT BACK TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SO WE CAN INVEST IN HAND-UPS!!!

Palmdale — Yeah, I don’t doubt there are red parts of CA (one not need look further than the Orange Curtain down south), and I guess I shouldn’t take for granted that Obama will win this state (oh, man… if McCain grabs CA I’ve lost all faith in everything). I know people that I work with that are staunch Republicans (most of them are exceedingly wealthy, shocker), and I still see plenty of “Bush/Cheney” stickers around. But pretty much everyone I know is voting for Obama, even the Independents I’ve run across.

I guess what I was saying was, I’ve looked on Obama’s site for volunteer opportunities but so many of them are during the day when unfortunately, I have to work, and other than just donating, I feel sorta helpless on how to further the cause. Like you, I am wondering what to say/do/act.

Palmdale,

Exactly….we are preaching to the choir here. I’m thinking the only way those who are in the Palin camp or leaning towards the Palin will see the light is if Fox News reports the facts as they come out. Or well-known conservatives start pulling away from the circus and start speaking out. The demographic thats at stake here won’t be coming to Mudflats for info.

That being said I went to my local Obama headquarters (housed in the county dem party headquarters) during my lunch hour and was immediately dismayed at how poorly organized the effort is. Granted, I live in a red state and the resources allocated for our area are minimal but it was a bit disheartening. I was able to speak to one of the staffers and, to be quite honest, they aren’t up to speed on the Palin issues and don’t see the threat that she poses. I gave them the Mudflats url and urged them all to come join us here!

I think the best effort at this point is to maintain vigilence with the citizen journalism in hopes that the MSM picks up on the effort and flys with it, target those Independents and get those voters out in numbers.

I was reading some of the comments on a news story which revealed the untruth about her selling the plane on ebay, and making a profit.

It is amazing how people can spin it where it is not a lie. ?

What bothers me, it is a stupid lie. One that wasn’t worth telling in the first place.

Someone mentioned on this log that maybe she embellished that story about her water breaking, and getting on the plane, believing it made her look all tough.

I know people that alway embellish the truth, and tell foolish lies. They are so compulsive they don’t even consider how it might come back to haunt them.

I am starting to ease off and come back to the issues. Her nomination is such a train wreck that it’s hard. But re: the divorce/affair scandal, I think I’ll wait for the Enquirer. Hard to imagine I’d ever be saying that.

I saw a study about slander and rumors. Studies show that once the rumors start, even if proven untrue, the “taint” is still there for some. That’s a game the Swift Boaters have tried to play for years. But now, it is going to come back and affect them, too. All of this Palin baggage, true or not, will permanently affect the way some voters feel about her. That’s the way rumor rolls.

What is a state governor doing in a “Church” talking politics, telling the people in that church that things will work in Alaska only if they are right with God.

Aren’t there laws against declaring a political group to be a church? Is Palin’s church’s tax status in question?

Isn’t this country founded on the separation of Church and State?

Didn’t the Europeans settling this country do everything they could to get away from religious control and intolerance, and keep it out of politics?

All right y’all I left my house for 2 hours and just spent the last 3 hours reading every single comment from the time I left. So, I too have become addicted to all this Palingate brouhaha, that now, I have about 6 or 7 other blogs I read. Just trying to get a pulse on what’s going on outside of Mudflats. Needless to say, I’m not getting much done because there is so much to read.

Well, anyhoo…I leave this link to another blog; which has a number of stories about the McCalins as I now seem to refer to them. Anyway at the bottom of a very lenghty update on all that has transpired is an ABC poll which states that 50% of the people who were polled thought that Gov. Paline has been receiving fair treatment etc… so much for the Republicans kvetching about her treatment. Of course, there are those who think otherwise.

And I’m sorry if the http doesn’t embed..been along time since I’ve blogged.

Hugs to all you mudflaters…keep it up! And to you the very fine Mudflat, thank you so much for all you have done. Your the best:)

Is there a 12-step-program for the mudflats blog? I spend hours on this site. When I was a tiny girl in rural MO, we didn’t say “under God.” Great book is “The Godless Constitution” which explains the time line over which the religious nuts have tried to make the US into a theocracy. I would like to correct a (small) inaccuracy in these posts. McCain is frequently referred to as A pow. . I’m afraid that is not entirely correct. He is THE pow. There may have been a few other guys over there but I think john took the brunt of it…. Just as Bush declared he had looked into Putin’s eyes and seen a soulmate (yes, they are both thugs bent on controlling and oppressing people), so john McCain clearly did recognize Sarah as his soulmate. They are the two biggest ego’s you could possibly find. Have any of you read the sad account of the Vietnamese man who rescued McCain when his plane went down & was slighted later on mccain’s trip to Hanoi and ignored in his biography?it gives quite a clear picture – that & his treatment of his first wife. – of his true nature. jt: I was thinking that too about Sarah and her ‘broken/leaking’ water story. I had a baby at 43 myself. My water broke as I was signing in for my doctor’s appt. They told me, don’t bother with the appt, get yourself to the hospital – pronto. This was baby #4 for me. She came 5 hours after my water broke.

I can say without reservation that there was no way in f****g hell Sarah Palin would have waited 6 hours to give a speech, then get on a plane to stop-over in Seattle, fly to Anchorage and then drive to Wasilla to have her baby if her water had broken. Any woman who has given birth at any age know that and those of us ‘older’ Moms know that it is complete BS. That is why I tended to believe the ‘baby isn’t hers’ story as that almost made sense. But as we are learning more and more about our Sweet Sarah I more inclined that everything she does and says in her sad pathetic transparently selfish life is an embellishment, an exaggeration or an out and out bald-faced, self-serving lie. I really think the woman has pathological lying problems that can be traced all the way back to when she had to ‘lie’ about smoking pot but not ‘enjoying’ it. Once again I call BS! I bet she ‘enjoyed’ it just fine!

The problems with people who lie is that once you catch them in one lie you never, ever believe them about anything again.

Obviously the repugs don’t care if people believe them – they have built an empire on lies. But it’s up to us – to expose the lies whenever we can and call them on their BS. Sarah may have snowed a few people so far but she never had the eyes of the entire world on her before and she sure as hell never had Nat’l Enquirer ‘field’ agents on her case.

I’m in CA too – the ‘orange’ curtain. Sometimes I think I’m the only Democrat (I exaggerate – slightly) in my lily-white rightwing town. I know many women who think Sweet Sarah is just the best thing since sliced (white) bread. All they hear is ‘anti-abortion’. The rest isn’t important.

I was a Hillary supporter who switched to Obama the day Hillary conceded. To think that anyone thought THIS woman could appeal to a Hillary supporter makes me seethe and I find it the most degrading form of sexism one could level at a woman.

I wonder if we as Obama supporters are focusing too much on Palin. I know we cannot control the media — they are going to focus on her for 60 days.

I think it would be best for Obama if she was just ignored and sort of swept under the rug.

My fear is that unless something real and provable comes up that is harmful to Palin (e.g., Troopergate), she becomes a martyr and Obama loses the election.

Maybe I am just being paranoid — but I have a right to be. I am literally scared for the future of this country if they get elected.

When I visited Alaska I went to a small fishing village called Hoona. The local Inuit tribe there (I’m sorry to say I forgot their specific name) were so generous and nice. But yes, the term “Eskimo” is generally thought of as fairly indelicate.

Speaking of race, though… I’m surprised that i saw “Hispanics for McCain” signs last night — surprised only because I thought the preferred term was “Latinos” these days…? Maybe only in CA. Or maybe because the person who made the sign is the same one who did “Mavrick” and “Raisin McCain.”

Just checked Gallup and it’s 48% Obama to 44% McCain. I’m going to exhale loudly and say it’s simply a bump from his “speech” last night. I feel like a live in the Twilight Zone, where a bigoted, lying, snide “pitbull” and an old, crusty, lying, cheating flip-flopper are neck-and-neck with a guy who can actually bring about POSITIVE change.

I think the reason they might be able to “get away” with Palin not doing interviews is that their base is sold on her, and the voters they are trying to get (working class women and men) may be less likely to watch the network and cable shows where the hard questions are asked. When Tim Russert died, seasoned politicians said that being grilled by Tim on Meet the Press was a rite of passage, that you were nobody until you made those rounds…she cannot do it because the truth would be exposed, even if she failed to tell the truth. The steep learning curve she has in being able to answer policy questions will be addressed. They will prep her and practice until she has it down. If they can train George Bush, they can train her. Meanwhile, though, she will also have to dance as fast as she can around all the questions about her record (and I mean just the professional stuff), and then there is the personal part. Those three things together make it impossible at the moment. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful to see Tim Russert ask and persist and display his visuals (of past video or statement she made), and to see her squirm amidst his forthright search for the truth?

EVERYBODY,

A thought just came to mind, and I ran over here to throw it out there. I ESPECIALLY want the MAIN STREAM MEDIA to think about this one…

If being a Community Organizer (at the tender age of 25 years old, after receiving his JD from Harvard University) is the WORST thing the Republicans can find on Barack Obama, HOW the HELL IS THAT A BAD THING?? Is that honestly the WORST they can find on him? WHAT THE HELL WAS SARAH PALIN DOING WHEN SHE WAS 25 YEARS OLD?? I would LOVE to find out, and I would LOVE to mock her in front of the entire world, the way she did with Barack Obama, our next President.

Think about it, folks.. The WORST thing Republicans can find on Barack Obama is that he graduated from Law School at one of the finest American institutions, then went to one of the poorest parts of our country to give his great fortune back to his community. THAT, my friends, is the WORST THING the Republicans can find on him.

I would imagine Sarah Palin, at 25 years old, was either struggling to finish up her BA in journalism, or she was busy using double sided tape on her tatas to keep her dress from falling off. If I can figure out a way to make a video to show these differences, I will.

I am FURIOUS at the Republicans for mocking somebody who made a difference in so many lives.

I agree raingods. Where there is smoke their is always Fire. I beleive that their plan to alienate the media has already begun to backfire. At the Huffington Post their is an article where the media strikes back on this whole the media was unfair to her. And they are going on the attack now. I am finally hearing on CNN, MSNBC, NBC coverage of the stories we have been talking about in the bloggisphere for days.
Just watched the focus group they showed on CNN with 8 women from Michigan. It was interesting. 2 out of the 8 said they were comfortable with her being president because drumroll please She Is A Mom. Are you kidding me? Since when did that become the reason to be president?
They also said they would not want her to be a role model for their kids, becuase she choose to put her 17 year old daughter out there in the spotlight knowing that she was pregnant.
This has restored some of my hope that women will be smart enough not to fall for the smoke and mirrors of the McCain campaign.

As a mother of a child with special needs, I do not appreciate being patronized by the words that we all have “special love.” What on earth is SHE talking about? Her kid is only 5 months old? We are not any more special than anyone else. I would like her to have said how she supported funding for special education in her state. This would make me feel better instead of patronizing us for being so damned special, but not deserving of some genuine help.

I am also sick to death of McCain’s big sacrifice in Vietnam. Perhaps he should have put his family first and he wouldn’t have been divorced after he got home. Community service is just as important and reveals the true character of a person. People do it because they FEEL RESPONSIBLE. Also, I know this is going to bug some vets, so don’t take it personal because I don’t mean to offend anyone, but many of them suffer from Post traumatic stress for the rest of their lives. I am beginning to wonder if this isn’t McCain’s problem on his inconsistency and bad judgments. If he is really so concerned about Obama’s inexperience, why does it make sense to take on another person with inexperience? Does McCain have a mental problem?

they are also up to their tricks with voter registration, etc in states like florida:

http://www.gregpalast.com/

we must not forget these people will win by any means. we must register enough people to vote so that there are so many dems voting that they cannot get away with it again. the non-wins in the last 2 elections were so slim that they could get away with it. if it is a landslide then it would be more difficult to cheat.

I am another convert to this blog – it’s phenomenal!!! Thanks for all the good you are doing and keep it up!!!

I wanted to post a very deep concern of mine. All this talk about Palin is entertaining and allows us to vent, but the reality of the situation is, unless Obama changes tack real soon he is in grave danger of losing this election. He is starting to make the same mistake the Democrats do almost every election: HE IS NOT TELLING FOLKS THAT THEY HAVE A NEED.

You may say, “But hasn’t he been explaining to the country for the past two years, that very thing? Not really, not yet. What he has been doing is giving speeches that are stirring, inspiring and DO detail what he plans to do – but he doesn’t establish a NEED. He doesn’t engender a feeling of a Clear And Present Danger, he doesn’t get MAD and get folks mad in their turn. He has surrogates for that, you say? It’s not in his nature to be that way? That may well be, but when Obama remarked the other day that he wasn’t running against the VP on the Repub ticket, he made a grave error. SHE is certainly running against HIM!! Can anyone doubt for a moment, when you see her with McCain on the stage, that she isn’t really running for the Top Slot?!Obama can choose to ignore her, stay “above the fray”, but in the end it will lose him the presidency. One thing the Democrats can learn from the Republicans is, most people vote as much from their gut as their brains. This impulse can be twisted and manipulated (Bush/Rove), but it can also be capitalized on for loftier aims.

I understand the Need; I have been for Obama from the start. It’s not folks like me that Barack has to persuade. Please, Barack – stop being a gentleman! Don’t leave it to Biden to do your work for you – it’s YOUR campaign! Let’s see The Fierce Urgency Of Now! If the Repubs want personality politics, give it to them on their own terms! You can be mad and truthful at the same time; you don’t have to resort to their snide, insulting tactics! Only, stand up and meet them halfway!

Always remeber that in the sound bite, 24/7 news cycle world, one or two memorable images go a long way. It’s up to you, Barack!

No time for complacency. I would NOT underestimate this ticket, nor overestimate the american voting public. I work with fairly smart colleagues who nevertheless do NOT peruse the internet or the political blogs, and who have no idea of all this information which seems so obvious and blatant to those on this blog.

I am not a politico, but my goodness, I have become more versed on the details of this election than ANY in my 42 years on this earth.

I also suspect this is a real test of whether the fundamentalist core is enough to vote a candidate into office. As someone who does not identify with any organized religion or group, this is rather terrifying, but perhaps I am living in a glass bubble.

Here’s the vibe I’m getting: many people still believe that Obama’s tax plan will tax ordinary, hardworking Americans (read: mainly white Americans) and use the money for social programs for–to borrow a phrase from George Bernard Shaw–the undeserving poor.

I even ran the numbers for our household (we get a sweet 5,000 – 6,000 tax cut) under Obama and for my mom (retired, widow, fixed income) under McCain’s plan and she gets a tax hike. I showed this to my nonreligious, yet staunch republican, husband. Nada. Zilch. No impact.

Have you ever heard someone use the argument against social programs with the following: Well, I saw this welfare mother with five kids use food stamps at the convenience store to buy junk food, candy, and beer. Or some variation?

That’s what we’re fighting against, that perception. And while I have immense respect for Senator Obama’s service as a community organizer, I suspect the reason behind the laughter at the republican convention was, that for some people (clearly not all), this accomplishment holds no worth: there he was, giving our hard-earned tax dollars to the undeserving poor.

It seems ludicrous, but it’s true. These people don’t even want to do the research, they simply want to be told Obama = taxes, McCain = no taxes. It doesn’t boil down to the economy, or Iraq, or the Constitution. It’s taxes.

McCain and Palin will just keep lying about the sale of the plane on Ebay, the bridge to nowhere, and everything else until the polls show that it is hurting them to do so. I mean will your average voter bother to look it up? Do they have time? At this point, the GOP has already convinced We, the People that the MSM is out to destroy Palin so even if the MSM report the lies, that just proves that they are out to get her. Unfortunately, I think we’re once again stuck living with the “truthiness” gauge of Bushworld representation on this one. The Obama campaign has recognized this, which is perhaps why they seem to be taking the tact of politely ignoring her.

That said, Rachel is nailing Palin to the wall!!!!! Bad idea to piss off the press because it just makes them hungry. I love that everything we have been chatting about is now going MSM and the gloves are off. BTW, my great-plus grandfather signed the Declaration of Independence and helped write the Constitution and I can tell you McCain/Palin’s vision for this country is not what they fought for. Our Founding Fathers were called radical “liberals” who were considered crazy to want to buck the system of King George and the Church of England. The naysayers were the “conservatives” who wanted to stay attached to “George” and “the Church”. Ironic, no? Well we know how that turned out and thus, WE need to stand up, stand together and fight again for freedom from the politics of George.

Since they introduced Palin last week (about 10 miles from my house, btw), I’ve just been obsessed with everything surrounding the story. And I discovered this blog Sunday and have been lurking constantly. It’s just fantastic.

It is just stunning the depth of shit surrounding this woman. It is just stunning that McCain would agree to someone he doesn’t know, and obviously doesn’t vet at all. Notice I didn’t say pick. It’s obvious McCain didn’t want her. He wanted his buddy Lieberman.

It’s obvious McCain was trying to appease the radical evangelicals that have hijacked the Republican party. But in picking someone who will prove to be a polarizing figure, I think he’s really sunk any chance of winning.

If McCain had played it safe with a Pawlenty or a Romney or a Huckabee, I think he would have had a better chance. Moderates and independents not comfortable with Obama might’ve gone with McCain, thinking “Well, McCain has got to be better than GWBush. right?” But Palin will just succeed in turning off moderates and independants.

I talked with a friend of mine a few months back about Obama vs. Hillary. We both agreed we were fine with Obama, and he said “Anyone but the Hildebeest.” I laughed and agreed. Well, last night I called him and told him that I’d vote for Hillary over this woman any time. He agreed!

@ ocliberal — I’m obviously not a woman, but that water breaking story had me wondering, too. There was one post on one of these threads from a woman who thought Sarah was telling the truth because she didn’t deliver until 40 some hours after her water broke and she was taking kids to school and doing all sorts of stuff in that time. I didn’t doubt her but this woman never got on a plane for a 10 hour trip either. She was always near her home and hospital. If Sarah Palin did fly after her water broke she not only endangered her baby and herself, but a plane load of people who might have had to land for this emergency. The fact that she did this shows more about her recklessness and lack of common sense then ANY of her other actions. Does a woman have some sort of little time table pop up when her water breaks? If not Sarah could have delivered in one hour, five hours, in other words no guarantee when. This woman is a loose cannon or else has a screw loose.

Folks –

The challenge facing us is to help Barack and Joe get their message out to the undecideds — and while this is all well and fun, the message on Palin needs to be that “while she may be a wonderful person, and a great mom, and an accomplished Alaskan (in essence, her personality is OK (‘within limits’) — her positions, her opinions, her views, her actions, and her policies are TOO EXTREME for this country” — and focus on the TOO EXTREME aspects of that.

The Repugs do not want to talk about issues, or the past eight years, or their record, or to reporters at all — and all of this needs to be painted with a single brush — that the OP and Palin in particular are TOO EXTREME — they may be nice people, and OK to have a beer and a mooseburger with, but that their policies are TOO EXTREME.

People you talk to will challenge this, but with an open mind — and that gives you an opening to rattle off all of the agenda items that Palin would implement if she was at the helm — and if you can convince the person you are talking to that what you are saying is true, and they are independent and open-minded, it will scare the $#”+ out of them.

Truthclubber out.

Hello All

I have had a very bad day…tried to get ready for fantasy football…but the TV for fill with those right-wing-christain-brainwash…lying crying about unfair treatment of SP..

Well if SP can attack everyone else…if she think she is not going to get it right back…what fantasy world is she living in…well enough of that…

McCain and SP say they are not going to let SP talk to news media unless they feel it is in their best interest…and people want to vote for these “Whopper Lier”

This is McCain and SP new name “Whopper Lier”

So here the first ———”Whopper Lying #1————–

Sarah Palin Slashed Funding for Special Needs Kidsmomocrats.typepad.com — In amongst all the other blatant falsehoods, Sarah Palin’s speech contained a heartwarming section about her youngest son and his special needs. She told special needs parents around the nation they’d have a friend in the White House if she was elected. With friends like this, they wouldn’t need enemies.

I will be posting regular “Whopper Lying #1 as I hunt them down on the internet, TV…she may be able hide from new media on TV but not us here at “mudflat family” … we will report everything..these too are good at lying

Sarah Palin is proving to be the Mayor of Liarsville and Governor of the State of Deception. Her speech last night was so full of inaccuracies, falsehoods, misleads, and flat out untruths I’m surprised that she thinks the American public is that stupid and I sure hope the GOP is regertting their crazed applause and support of her speech last night.

Oh, she’s not going anywhere, unless she gets charged with a crime. The Republicans think they’ve struck gold. Maybe that isn’t a bad thing. It has galvanized us.

Siege,

Just the other day, my sister and I were talking about what a shame it was that Russert wasn’t here to grill Sarah. Wow, he would have been a huge help and a clear mind and voice at a time like this.

I’m going crazy here in Ohio.
Just the other day, my boyfriend and I were volunteering for the Obama campaign, calling independent and democrat voters around town.

I talked to one person who said they would vote for Obama, two people gushed on and on about how Obama is “unfit to be commander and chief, and is a traitor and my son is in Iraq and he will NEVER serve Obama as commander and chief–”click” and “you’ve got to be kidding me–Obama is a criminal and a Commie–”click” and two conversations that transpired thus: “Well, now that you just called me, I’m not going to vote for him–”click” and “Well, I’ll vote for whoever calls me the least–”click”….as well as a lot of people who just wouldn’t talk to me period even though I introduced myself as being from Layfayette Twshp, just down the street!

It was so discouraging. My own father who is the smartest guy I know–very mentally quick and has a master’s degree, was bowled over by Sarah Palin. Yes, he’s an evangelical pastor, but why oh, why, can’t he at least acknowledge that the Republicans suck, even though he might agree with them on abortion? He was even cheering for Mitt Romney’s speech, which made no blinking sense on any planet that I’ve ever heard of….(refresher: the over-blown spending of the past eight years is the fault of the LIBERALS) I mean, my mom, who along with my dad also own their own business, is asking me for money to help them with their house payment because business has been so slow lately. My mom is telling me they only have eggs to eat at the house right now.

My boyfriend’s uncle pronounced just two months ago and I quote: “Barack Hussein may not be Muslim, but you can’t tell me that some of those Muslim ways haven’t rubbed off on him. He’s such a coward, too. He would send his own mother to fight for him in Iraq.” –said on location at a family gathering around my boyfriend’s mother’s grave to commemorate her passing 3 years ago.

I love these people. They’re good people. But they make no effing sense and I don’t friggin’ get it! I’m not a genius. I’m not smart. But is it too much to ask that people who are being pummeled by life under Bush, put two and two together about why everything sucks so bad?

Sorry about the rant.

Can’t take it in Ohio.

Mudflats,
I found your blog on the Huffington Post and have never had so much fun reading your posts and comments in years. Whoo Hooo. I am like most of the others who read your blog daily(sometimes 2-3 times a day) and have you listed on my Blog for others to see and refer to. I am voting for Barack Obama and I have got to tell you that this is the first time in over 30 years that I have voted for a candidate. To think, that they can parade someone around the stage, fill her with scripted words, keep her out of the media’s reach for questions about her experience(NOT), and expect the American people to believe her when the only thing that comes out of her mouth are half-truths and vile attacks not only on the unselfish Americans who go out in our communities to help others but Barack Obama who has used his God given talent to help the unfortunate, and the working poor is disgraceful.

What kind of person does this? What kind of person finds pleasure in other peoples weaknesses? What kind of person thinks using animals to describe her instincts is funny? What kind of person shows no understanding or can’t see the bigger picture? I’ll tell you, a person who has no moral concience, no empathy or one thread of kindness to show to anyone who isn’t like herself. The people who she employs feel helpless to do anything to call her on this for fear of losing their livelihood through a smear campaign. Funny how things work out. Look who’s under the microscope now. How will she feel about being the person who gets smeared? We all have lessons to learn lets hope she “get’s it”.

Keep up the good work. I think I will send a letter to MSNBC to the attention of Rachael Maddow so far as I can tell, she is the only one besides Keith Obermann who can see through this charade.

Not sure this has been mentioned or not but the McCain Campaign got two “cease and desist” orders today. One was from representatives of the rock group Heart, prohibiting the campaign from using the song “Baracuda” without permission. The other was from the Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, CA, which prohibited the campaign from using the picture of the school that appeared behind John McCain during part of his speech.

Apparently, the McCain Campaign used the middle school picture (which looked like a villa) in error, instead of a picture of the Walter Reed Medical Center in suburban Washington, DC. The strange green screen behind McCain during part of his speech was actually the front lawn of the Middle School in close up.

Look gals,

As a woman I have to say this. I am voting for the Obama/Biden ticket.

I cannot stand by and let the McCain/Palen ticket get even close to the white house. This is really personal for me as a woman. Palen has taken a stand that would ban abortion in the case of rape or incest. It is quite possible for her to assume the presidency if McCain is elected and determine the make up of the supreme court for the next 20 years, among other things, like vetoing every bill that comes across her desk, controlling all of the heads of departments, commanding the milatary, and the list gets worse. She has shown no support for equal pay for women, for broad access to health care coverage, for worker safety protections, for public education, for public libraries, for higher education, for environmental protection. What in the world does she have to offer American women but grief?

To me she comes across as someone who cannot be trusted in a position of such power-precisely because of the way she has used the positions of power she has had up to now. The firing of the librarian, only rehiring her back under threat of recall, apparently, the firing of the agriculture board over the dairy, all this signals that she would be a dangerous and tragically unsuited person to occupy the highest executive office in the United States.

I’m sorry, but I refuse to accept this. I feel it is a direct attack on American women. (Not to mention on the men we love, and on the children we love.)

I don’t think we should count on Hilary or anyone else to fight this battle for us. Anyone who wants to join in fine, but this is one battle American women need to fight themselves. Noone should be allowed to drag us back 200 years for their own gain.

I’m mad as hell, and I’m not sitting this one out!

Ok, I get it. This election is about personalities accordinng to the McCain campaign staff. Guess that’s all that’s left when you can’t run on your party’s success over the last 8 years. So said Biden today.

Hope y’all enjoyed Countdown. I can’t wait for Monday and the kick-off of Rachel’s show. She’s wonderful — smart and attractive. But most of all SMART.

I’ve been reading this blog for a number of days now (thanks to Andrew Sullivan) and it’s been enormously enjoyable. Fantastic writing by the author (he/she seems to be deliberately not revealing gender- but for some reason I think it’s written by a woman) and great comments all around.

I live in Northern Virginia, and I feel desperate to turn our state blue this November. I’ve committed to time canvassing and making calls for Obama, but it seems this blog can do so much MORE to help! Posting this document and all other relevatory material is a signficant step. Let’s hope the MSM is paying attention.

At least we know the public is tuning in. Andrew Sullivan has now linked to this blog a number of times and lately his site has been getting a million hits per day. I was in line at Target today and heard random folks in line reference Muckraker. It turns out that so many of us in Virginia (Dems and Repubs) are bewildered by the Palin pick and feel like we’re in the Twilight Zone. Any solid guidance through the “muck” is much needed and appreciated.

By the way, this is my first comment on a blog, ever. The Obama campaign has moved me to so many firsts – donating, volunteering, getting addicted to political news, etc…. I hope the campaign will ultimately move our country to an enormous first as well.

Sarah Palin has a woman problem. And all of us women can make it a bigger problem. Here’s the why and how.

Before I tell you this, let me make this clear. I am a woman. I believe women can do anything. BUT, I also believe there are times in your life where you are in a better position to take on a major challenge. I’d say a national campaign and VP of the US falls into the category of “Major Challenge.” I also believe all women politicians are not equally prepared for a national office with tremendous responsibility.

If you believe this woman should not be the next VP, try this when you’re talking to other women. It works. Simply start the conversation with, “That’s really something, isn’t it?” Next question: “You have kids, don’t you?” The zinger … “Can you imagine yourself taking on a national campaign when your youngest was 4 months old?”

Be prepared to hear 15 reasons why they never could have done that. I end the conversation with, “It just seems odd to me that she wouldn’t have held off until 2012 when her youngest is 4 and easier to care for.” If I still haven’t closed the deal I say, “When you were 17, wouldn’t you have killed your mother if she had put you in the limelight like that?” Done deal.

Let me make this clear … I would not do this to another woman if I thought she was experienced and worthy. But, I am capable of saying virtually ANYTHING to keep this particular woman out of the White House.

If you can stomach this approach, try it. I’m not proud of it. I just know it works. I talked to 6 different women yesterday. I guarantee none of them will vote for her. I call that Mission Accomplished.

What will be interesting is if this pair of duds will be voted in. To quote bozo-brain bush, “fool me once, shame on you – fool me twice,……..well, you can’t fool me twice” Will the majority of voters be stupid enough to be fooled 3 times?????? If so, then the country has problems bigger than anyone imagined possible.

This came in today, check it out: http://mediamatters.org/ You can sign up for a newsletter/alerts from them. They are noting that the media is NOT doing an equal job of covering political news.

Neither ABC nor CBS aired analysis from Democrats, Democratic strategists, or progressive media figures during their live coverage of the second day of the Republican National Convention on September 2 (the first day of the networks’ live coverage of the convention). By contrast, both networks aired analysis from Republicans and conservatives, as well as from Democrats and progressives, during coverage of the second day of the Democratic National Convention on August 26.

Media Matters for America counted elected officials and strategists affiliated with each party who appeared on the networks during the 10 p.m. ET hour of convention coverage, but omitted interviews of delegates on the floor of the conventions (who presumably were members of the parties holding the convention). Findings are included in the table below: etc.

Sarah Palin: from Sandpoint to power politics
McCain choice for veep has her roots in Sandpoint

SANDPOINT, ID — Alaska’s Gov. Sarah Palin, chosen by Sen. John McCain to be the Republican party’s vice presidential candidate in the November elections, was born right here in Sandpoint, Idaho, on February 11, 1964.

Although Sarah Palin only lived here for three months before her family moved to Alaska, her father Chuck Heath grew up in Hope, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1956. Chuck taught in Sandpoint schools in the early 1960s before moving to Alaska in 1964 with his family, including his wife Sally.

Chuck still holds some track records at Sandpoint High, and was inducted into the Sandpoint High School Hall of Fame.

His daughter, Sarah Palin, grew up in Alaska, and returned to Idaho to attend the University of Idaho in Moscow, graduating in 1987 with a degree in journalism. Palin also attended North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene for the 1983-84 school year.

Palin is the first woman to be nominated for vice president as a Republican and only the second to run for vice president on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.

“To have been chosen brings a great challenge,” Sarah Palin said. “I know that it will demand the best that I have to give and I promise nothing less.”

I usually stay out of the political fray – independent and voting for Obama. I have three daughters – called two of them tonite and did what any decent mother would do – threatened them with their lives if they didn’t vote. Once I explained all of the issues – they can’t wait to get to the polls. But it cannot end there – we must all be more diligent about our own state governments, town governments and neighborhoods. I have been on this site every nite since Annie Oakley was nominated – she and the Michelin man make quite the team……. Vote early – vote often (just like the republicans do….).
Best to all of you – it’s been a pleasure.

BJA,
Well-said on the “what we can pose to other mothers” front- I have a Repub brother and sis in law and did a lesser version of that the other day (have to move slowly with her). I do not think I will change her vote but at least she has to THINK…she and I compare notes all the time about the commitment of raising children (we each have three and all are 8 and under). This five children deal and the youngest being 4 months, and having special needs, fired me up and made me question her from day one (last Friday). I kept waiting for the info that father was a stay at home dad and amazingly supportive, that her mother lived with them…anything to make it seem like it was in any was plausible that she could leave her kids and especially an infant for even 70 days (and then what if they won?). And I do mean “leave” in the physical sense as well as in the psychological, emotional sense…

I am so very concerned that the color of Obama’s skin will cause him to lose and therefore all of us to lose. I worry some who were on the fence but allowed racism (without even necessarily admitting it to themselves) to give them pause will now feel justified in voting for McCain/Palin because they are voting for another oppressed group, but she makes them feel so much more comfortable because she looks like them.

No one said anything to me. If anything, I think it prevented some in our party who will be voting for McCaine, to not bring up the topic. Had I not worn the button, I know there would have been anti-Democratic cracks, and then I would speak up….and…well…I would get up on my soap box…..and end up in a fight with hubby. Not that he is for McCain, but he is VERY tired hearing me bitch about Palin.

There’s a big difference between a ‘drift gillnet’ and ‘set gillnet’, I reckon….

“Palin Plead No Contest to Criminal Negligence Charge of Using a Drift Gillnet Without a Permit,
Had Charge of Fishing Without an ID That Was Dismissed. In 1993, Sarah Palin used a drift gillnet
to harvest salmon from the Bristol Bay area without an annual permit. Palin plead guilty to the Criminal
Negligence charge. Palin also had a case dismissed where she was charged with fishing without a photo
ID. The case was filed 6/28/93 and was disposed 8/25/1993. The jurisdiction was the Third Judicial

District-Dillingham. [Alaska Criminal History Records, Case # 3DI-93-00249CR0001; Alaska Criminal History Records,
Case # 3DI-93-00217CR0001]

Palin Explained her Fishing Violation, Saying She Forgot to Switch Her Registration from
Crew Member to Permit Holder. “Turns out that in 1993 Palin pleaded no contest in Dillingham
District Court to a fishing violation — failure to register as a set gillnet permit holder. And the
violation was then mistakenly entered into the court computer system as being a felony. Palin
explained the fishing violation by saying that she had been a crew member but took over the
permit for that season from her sister-in-law. Palin then forgot to switch her registration from that
of a crew member to a permit holder, she said. Palin called the court in Dillingham and
straightened out the mistaken felony designation. The court clerk described it as a “data input
error” and faxed Palin a letter of apology, saying the error has been corrected. But in recent days
reporters have anonymously received copies of the court record calling it a felony. “I think it’s
pretty cowardly,” Palin said. “Somebody is peddling this five days before the election, obviously
[Anchorage Daily News (Alaska), 8/22/02]
to smear my reputation.”“ “

1) I think the Presidential race will sort itself out OK, but people *really* ought to think hard about helping out on-the-edge Senate races.

2) Some of us (for example here in the SF Bay Area), are actually accustomed to having smart, tough, competent, experienced female politicians around (Sens. Feinstein & Boxer; Speaker Pelosi, and a bunch of other Representatives, including Eshoo, Lofgren, and more, all live in the Bay Area) and yes, those are all (D).

But for (R) one might check out Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins (R-ME), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX). If as Wikipedia claims, Hutchison isn’t keen on Palin, that’s a plus for her!

[Note: no political endorsements implied above, as there is a wide spread of political opinion in the list above; this is just an observation that Hillary isn't the only serious female politician around, and while there are way more Democrats, there are some Republicans, although moderates, like the ME pair, have seemed endangered of late. There must be a lot of cringing going on...] Had McCain picked Snowe, for example, I think a lot of independents would actually have been impressed.

3) There is one upside to this that people might consider. A whole lot of people are going on the record, which these days means that what people write or say ends up on the Web, or even YouTube. In the “old days”, it was much harder to find such information. These days … there is a good opportunity to save URLs for future use….

If Sarah Palin is not ready for questions from the press on day one, how can she be ready to be President of the United States on day one? She is an uninformed person and the fate of the free world could lie in her hands because the most important qualification for her by the McCain Campaign and many in the media was that she could read well from a prompter. This is scarey.

that have been shown to be patently untrue, unrepentant backpedaling, and incessant whining that her only enemies are the press and a few disgruntled supporters of former Mayor John Stein.” [Frontiersman

Wasilla “the city all looks like a bait shop in Louisiana” according to Carville. Why would do people on this lame blog love the dems so much?

Obama is not now, nor will he liley ever be ready to have teh most important job in the world. I sudder to think of the foreign policy nightmares, and the reentrenchment of terrorism in the world should he be in charge.

That is besides his old, tired dem ideas of trying to create a dependancy state.

Jan:

There were more than 600 American POWs in North Vietnam. Most of them — 590 — received the Silver Star, like John McCain. Nearly all of them, like McCain, were tortured. Nearly all of them, like McCain, refused early release until the first captured, the sick and the injured were released.

McCain’s service, while honorable, was not unique and he certainly does not be to termed ‘THE’ POW.

I apologize for not using my name in the above post. The last sentence should read: “McCain’s service, while honorable, was not unique and he certainly does not deserve to be termed ‘THE’ POW.

At todays rally in COlorado Springs, McC chortled to the crowd ” I REALLY like those flags !! Seems a vendo at Mile High ripped off the bundled flags that were to be shipped to another event, said he thought the Dems bundled them as garbage soHE RESCUED THEM and donated them to the Colorado Springs raly for McCain…that’s the story being promoted, when checked, the Dems state they were NOT bundled as or FOR garbage disposal, they were to be sent to another event . McCain does NOT believe in fact checking or vetting obviously and hence, he was the recepient and dispenser of STOLEN PROPERTY.Lets face it, 12000 flags have a cost factor, and economically speaking, such would NOT have JUST been bundled for trash as another 60days of campaigning. The audience members who had received Flags , kept theirs for souveneirs for it was an historic night, those bundled flags were the excesss inventory and were indeed to be utilyzed elsewhere during the remaining campaign.
Just another example of unscrupelous GOP campaign tactics who so “claim” how patriotic, law abiding, honorable and more they themselves are even when caught red handed stealing or lying or cheating or whatever. They are truly pathetic and folks, if somehow they manage to snag the title, this country will pay a price that NONE should ever even have to consider with consequences that could even make the Bushlerized years seem a cake walk !!

Thank you for an Alaskan’s analytical insights on Mme. Palin. You’ve generated a lot of buzz with it…that’s a good thing. In skimming through the comments, one thing just leapt off the screen: The negatives from right-wingers are very revealing–nearly all appear to have been written by functionally illiterate dullards. One can easily conclude that most people on the “conservative” right deserve disenfranchisement for being so ill-informed and so unable to think critically about the many serious issues facing this country. Are their votes are cast solely on a foundation of myth and misperception? T’would seem so. Sarah Palin (and indeed the entire Republican Party) are like pornography. They have NO SOCIALLY REDEEMING VALUE.

Jason , really do have to ask if you REALLY think Palin is actually more qualified than Obama…You say you worry what HE would do in regards to Foreign Policy…have you given any thought to what Sara would do as she be but a heartbeat away of a 72yr old who is not exactly on track to great FP either no matter what he presently claims as experience or expertise. Sara has NONE, even acknowledged she had never given much thought to regarding Iraq other than it is a mission from GOD….She is a hockey Mom, PTA participant and was elected mayor in a town of 6500 or so residents and won with 617 votes over her opponents 400+. She did become govenor of a state that has a total population less than a number mid size metro city’s in the lower 48 . She has indeed had difficulties in her actual governing style and capabilities, this nonsense of “one of us” is absurd for the majority of US are not capable of such position of VP of USA either and we damn well know it and it IS critical to get the best and the brightest into such positions if we really want to get this country on track to a prosperous future and serve the GREATER common good of ALL. TO support the likes of McC and Palin at this point in time is to concede that we ordinary folks do NOT really count for anything much and the spoils go only to the very well connected. She may TALK reformer/maverick but her record does not actually back that up or prove out to be in the greater common good interests of ALL but indeed for but choosen few at her descretion.

Is there any truth about Palin’s oldest son going into the military to avoid going to jail for vandalism? Can someone look into that story.

George – I wasn’t aware the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892. Thanks for that info. I am aware that the phrase ‘Under God’ was added to the pledge and to our currency during the Eisenhower administration. Hmmm… was Ike a founding father?

I don’t think this is a vetting ducument. It looks more like somebody’s personal public article check on Palin and the fact that they didn’t even get her birthplace correct leads even more to wonder. I think Palin is a tool and I wish I could get my hands on McCain’s vetting of her and had the cash to get the facts.
